In the new capital, a lot of lodgings were available to Adventurer Guilds' partners, especially higher-ranked ones like Moonsong. Having your own private room dedicated only to you in the most prestigious inn is still a bonus everyone strives to get.

Uneasy, she walked around the corridor back and forth. Earlier she had requested the entire third floor to be emptied for today, so as to not disturb potential customers with 'noises'. Good thing the inn management was happy to oblige because she had been helping a lot with their problems. The woman would tap her foot several times nervously, waiting for the man she messaged this morning to appear.

Even with everything that happened, Yugam was one of the people she trusts, a person she confides in, and probably the only one she'd ever ask for a favor like this.

Once he showed his face, she would discreetly motion him to come toward her. There were no more problems between them, but it was still so hard to look him directly in the eyes. Her blue eyes wandered to the corner of the corridor, clearing her throat before asking him with a reddened face.

"Have you considered... my request?"

Walking into the inn, it had been the usual affair. Patrons mingling inn the lobby, sitting at tables, eating, drinking, talking. Given the time of the evening, the space was nearly filled to the brim, almost every seat taken by some body or another. But as Yugam traveled up the flight of stairs, it soon became near silent, the only noises coming from downstairs.

It was at the top of the second flight of stairs that Yu saw her, waiting for him. He gave no greeting as he approached. Nothing in particular seemed different about the man, but something seemed off about him. Maybe it was the way he kept his hands in his pockets, or even meaner look he had on his face. Or maybe it was the lack of a particular sword-spirit at his side. Whatever the case, she could hardly meet his eyes, despite having waved him over. "Have you considered... my request?" she asked after having cleared her throat.

"Yeah," the man said, a stern look on his face. "I'll do it." He couldn't trust anyone else to.

"But on one condition," the man said. "If anyone asks, you don't mention me. Ever. You tell them, you found some Lander animancer up in High March. And you paid him a lot of coin. No one is to ever find out I did, or even can, do this. Are we clear?"

The dialogue was pretty awkward without them meeting eyes, but something was particularly off about Yugam. Moonsong decided that she'd shut her mouth about it for now.

She pondered for a few seconds. How many people she was gonna reveal her identity to, anyway? The condition didn't seem to be anything really hard. The songstress raised her right hand like swearing an oath. "I promise not to tell anyone, not even a single soul, that you did or can do this."

Promises are important to her, and it's not like she was going to intentionally break those. "We're doing it here." She gestured to the room on her left.

The inn manager probably thought she was into something really weird when she requested it to be installed in her private room, but at least he would not blabber about it. She opened the door to reveal the contents of the bedroom; a bed, with four chain bindings locked to each leg. To the right, there were a lot of jugs of fresh water on the table.

"I figured the process would be far more painful and longer than the last time you healed me."

Moonsong said nothing for a moment before raising a hand, swearing an oath, much like she would've if she was being sworn in office. "Good," Yugam said, with a short nod, before looking over at the door that the woman indicated.

Stepping into the room, the man stopped, staring at the bed with attached to the four posts, and enough water to quench a village's thirst. "I figured the process would be far more painful and longer than the last time you healed me," the woman explained before Yugam could even ask the question. "Yeah. Well, you're not wrong," the man said without a hint of emotion.

Just like when he'd healed her in Lubeck, the man took off his coat and draped it over the back of a chair before starting to roll up his sleeves. "Got a reference for me?" the man asked as he did so. "It'll make things easier for me."

"Yeah. Well, you're not wrong," The man shivered as soon as the man rolled up his sleeve, bringing back a certain scene of something that she wished never happened back in Lubeck. The pair of blue eyes quickly looked away, trying to block the memory.

"Got a reference for me?"

"Uh, here's what I have thought." The brunette handed him a piece of paper, with a pretty detailed (and actually well-drawn) sketch of a woman on it. There were points and short descriptions circled and written on each body part. "Doesn't look much like me."

Being anonymous
- Blue hair
- Pale complexion
- Bigger eyes
- Smaller nose
- Smaller jaw
- Smaller shoulders
- Less curves (circled on the bust and butt part)

Moonsong closed and locked the door, before taking off her robe and hanging it on the door handle, revealing her undergarments. The songstress was never able to remake her armor, especially with the condition she has now.

"One more thing," She asked, gesturing at the middle of her chest area, where a sizable shard of steel seemed to protrude from and embedded itself inside, pulsating black metallic veins converging around it. The Hunter might've seen it during the Lubeck incident, but now it's more bigger and apparent. "Is it possible to move my heart out of the way without killing me?"

Yu took the piece of paper of from Moonsong, the quiet crinkling sound as he did so the only noise in the room for a few moments as his eyes traced the features of sketch, committing to them to memory as best he could. He'd still have it on hand as he worked, but it never hurt to try and memorize what he could.

"Alright then," the man said setting the paper to the side, keeping any opinions he had to himself. "Let's-"
"One more thing."

Yu's eyes were drawn up to the Ashen Knight once more, who'd stripped out of her clothing in the time it had taken had taken Yugam to review the reference image. She pointed to a sharp mass of metal that protruded grotesquely from her chest, having grown extensively since the first time Yu had noticed it in Lubeck. The man's teeth clenched and jaw tensed for just a moment as he laid eyes on the protrusion. The first time, the Hunter had assumed it was some sort of decoration or implant, no larger than a smalls stone then. But now its size and the sickly black veins the thrummed and pulsed to her heart beat indicated otherwise.

"Is it possible to move my heart out of the way without killing me?"
"How far out of the way are we talking?"
the man asked.
"As much as you possibly can."
Yugam nodded. "I need to get some things, but yeah. I can take care of it. I'll be back in a second."

Yu walked back into the room a few minutes after he'd left, setting a glass jar on the table that was quickly becoming a part of his workspace. Thankfully, the tavern owner had been willing to part with one of his unused pickling jars without any questions and just a gold piece.

"Alright, lie down on the bed," Yu said to Moonsong. "And take the bra off. It's just gonna get in the way." The near business-like demeanor with which Yugam commanded Moonsong made it very clear that there weren't any ulterior motives behind his request.

"I need to get some things, but yeah. I can take care of it. I'll be back in a second."

The songstress tilted her head, confused as to what the Hunter was planning. While the man was away, she poured herself a cup of water and drank, predicting that she would get dehydrated in the operation process.

Yugam came back with a pretty peculiar item. A glass jar. She's not gonna ask because she more or less knew where this is going, but is that kind of thing actually possible?

"And take the bra off. It's just gonna get in the way."

The way he said it triggered an urge to throw a funny remark at him. Unable to hold back the itch, she chuckled and feigned an embarrassed face while winking. "You don't have to use that excuse, you know." It's more of a friendly joke than a teasing, as they both know they are treading in hot water.

Jokes aside, she unclipped her upper underwear and hung it on the doorknob, before climbing onto the bed. There was nothing of her the man hadn't seen in detail, so she was actually pretty casual wearing next to nothing. Her face turned serious again in preparation for what was coming.

"If you're doing what I'm thinking..." Moonsong applied the bindings on both her ankles, making sure she couldn't easily get loose, before lying on her back and applying the binds to her left wrist. "... Please just make sure I don't truly die in the process. One death is enough for me." After putting a rolled towel inside her mouth to prevent herself from biting her own tongue, the woman gestured for Yugam to bind her right arm.

"You don't have to use that excuse, you know."
Yu looked over at Moonsong. Blankly, at first, as if trying to discern whether or not she had said exactly what he thought she'd said. Confirming that she had, indeed, said exactly what he though the man's eyes closed, his head tilting to the side as a faint smile tugged at his lips as he tried to suppress both his amusement and his disappoint. "Right. Bed. Now."

As Moonsong made her request, Yugam couldn't help but make note of how strange it was that she so willingly binding herself to the bed. Most people, when faced with restraints, were too eager to escape or avoid them. They struggled against them, even when at play. And even still, this most unusual sight played out before the man, of a the woman tying herself to the bed with iron shackles and cotton bite. She either was desperate for what was to come, or she trusted the man implicitly. Or both.

Yugam didn't answer Moonsong's request immediately, a fact she probably found a bit discomforting as the man leaned over her and tied in her last free limb to the bed, splaying her spread eagle across the mattress. The grabbed the ends of the rolled towel, shifted it slightly. "Bite down again," the man ordered. When he was satisfied that Moonsong wasn't gonna swallow her own tongue, the man straightened his back and nodded. "Don't worry, you're in good hands," the man promised before turning around and picking uip the reference photo to examine it one more. "Good hands that've never done this before..."

The experience might've been familiar to Moonsong, if she could recall anything from the time that Yugam had healed her. Except this was far more violent. Muscles were torn apart intentionally, bones broken, shattered, reshaped. Over and over again, the process was repeated across Moonsong's body, the restructuring of her form and features being a far more intensive process now the she had exited the character creator. But doable nonetheless.

It was hours before Yu stopped and collapsed into the chair beside the bed, wiping the sweat that poured down his face away. "That was the easy part," the man joked with a short chuckle as he picked up one of the jugs of water and took a long draught from the porcelain receptacle.

The jar parted from the man's lips and the man looked over at Moonsong, her new face and shape as perfect as any mortal could have managed. "You should drink some water too," the man said, setting the jar down and standing, going over to girl and taking the bite from out of her mouth, and unshackling her arms, and then her legs. "How you feelin' so far?" Yugam asked as he lifted the jar and went to the table. He grabbed one of the cups and poured some water in before going back to the bed and sitting beside Moonsong, handing her the cup. "We don't have to keep going ya know. We can finish up tomorrow if it's all too much for you."

Moonsong tried really, really hard to stay awake because she knew her body would give up the moment her consciousness shut down. Her body was constantly being rewritten on a cellular level, rapidly tearing apart and regenerating at the same time. Does assimilation also feel like this?

A few hours flew by, but it seemed like an eternity for both Moonsong and Yugam. When he was done, they were heavily drained by the task, physically and mentally. The bed was tainted with sweat and blood from the operation, but the result was a success.

A whisper escaped her mouth as soon as he removed the bindings and the cotton bite.

"Should have chosen a different place..."

The immense pain, damp messed bedsheets, and sight of Yugam certainly brought back a bad memory. An image she remembered like it was yesterday, but wished that she didn't. "...Thanks." She took the cup of water and drank it, easing the headache.

"How you feelin' so far?"

"Not good."
Other people might have gone crazy from the procedure, but not her. The woman exhaled before standing up and placing the empty container back on the table. "Don't worry, I'm that strong." She said as she made her way towards the bathroom, "One minute, bathroom break."

Moonsong took a towel and soaked it
H8lVdsw.png
with water, wiping off sweat from her face and body before looking at the mirror. "Wow..." Blue hair, bigger eyes, smaller body features, and a different skin tone. She doesn't even look like herself anymore, the only thing unchanged was the massive steel protruding on her chest. "...This is a massive feat that you have pulled here." The changed woman exited the bathroom, asking the man while climbing back into the bed. "Are you able to continue?" He must have exerted a considerable amount of energy, too, hence why she asked.

"Not good."
Yugam's eyes stayed locked on Moonsong, as if evaluating her condition, or preparing to step in if she suddenly fainted from exhaustion. "Don't worry, I'm that strong."
"Mm,"
the man grunted in response, as if he didn't entirely believe her.
"One minute, bathroom break."

As Moonsong got up to go clean herself up, the Puppet Maker grabbed the ceramic jug of water again and leaned back into the chair. He took a long draught of the water, it's coolness flooding through him, refreshing him. The process might not have been as painful for him as it was for his patient, but it was certainly just as exhausting. When this was all over, Yugam was going to log out, eat a massive meal, and then sleep for a day and a half.

"Wow..." Moonsong said from within the bathroom. "...This is a massive feat that you have pulled here." Maybe he should've felt some form of pride, but the man felt nothing but tiredness. The sound of the door opening drew his eyes, and he looked over to the woman as she reemerged from the bathroom. "Are you able to continue?" The man nodded in response, gesturing towards the bed. "Lie back down, let's get this over with," he said as he set the jug of water back down. "Don't bother with the restraints. Just make yourself comfortable."

"Lie back down, let's get this over with," Yugam ordered. Suddenly, the blue-haired woman remembered something. "Wait," she got off the bed and walked towards her hanged robe, searching for something between the inside pockets, before grabbing a purple gem.

"Replenish yourself a little," Moonsong tossed him the small amethyst, before explaining to the man. "That contains at the very least tens of thousands of years of worth of lifeforce, so be careful." What a fucking lengthy sentence. "Don't ask how I got it."

She climbed back to the bed, ready to apply the restraints again before the man stopped her.

"Don't bother with the restraints. Just make yourself comfortable."

"You sure?"

She laid back down facing up, her small hands stacked on top of her abdomen. The naked songstress then hummed a tune akin to a lullaby, soothing herself and bringing her vitality to the best possible condition to prepare for the next gruesome procedure.

"I'm ready." Moonsong nodded to the man.

Before she lied down, Moonsong stood and pulled something from her robe, tossing it to the man. Yugam caught the small item, it's heft a slight surprise as it landed in his palm. Upon opening his hand, the man found that what the woman had thrown him was nothing less than a gem. For a moment, he thought it was some form of payment.

"Replenish yourself a little," the woman began to explain. "That contains at the very least tens of thousands of years of worth of lifeforce, so be careful."
"I'm sorry, what?"
"Don't ask how I got it."

Forget about how Moonsong got it. "Why the hell are you carrying this thing around in your pocket?" the animancer asked, well aware of it's value, turning towards the woman as she laid down in the bed, his face having disbelief written across his. "And why the hell are you tossing it to me like it's some sort of second-rate healing potion?"

"Why the hell are you carrying this thing around in your pocket?"

Where should she store it then? Up her ass? "Can't store that thing in the inventory, probably too powerful for that. I don't trust people enough to store it somewhere." Thinking about it again, Yugam's concern was quite true. It was essentially like carrying an atomic spirit bomb around in your purse.

"And why the hell are you tossing it to me like it's some sort of second-rate healing potion?"

"It's not like I can currently use that one anyway, besides it's quite indestructible. I'm still searching for more of those things."

After hearing that, it seemed that Yugam was thinking about something while looking at the purple gem. Moonsong sat back down, asking the man what was currently on his mind.

"What are you thinking about? Aren't you going to start?"

"Have you tried?" the man replied incredulously to Moonsong thinking she couldn't store it in her inventory. Forget the not trusting people part, that made total sense, but had she not, at least, attempted to shove the thing in her inventory?

The things that he could do with this little purple stone...

The thin tendrils of violet magic began to rise from the stone as life energies began to leak out from the crystalline lattice, wrapping around the man's arm and winding their way beneath his sleeve. They sunk into his skin, leaving behind faint glowing markings that faded away.

To think this little thing was the answer to the problem he'd been wracking his brain over for how many days, weeks, months?

"What are you thinking about? Aren't you going to start?"

The words interrupted the man's thoughts, his eyes flicking back up to Moonsong, lying in the bed. The magic faded as the man set the gem down on the table. "You're looking for more? Why?" the man asked, sitting down in the chair and leaning back, his arms crossed across his chest.

"Have you tried?" Moonsong quickly dismissed the question, as she had tried several methods to hide the gem from sight. It also seemed that they're quite indestructible too, at least with her current power. "Yeah, it would materialize in the world again instantly."

"You're looking for more? Why?"

She sat on the edge of the bed, looking at the man before explaining about the mysterious power gems.

"I've seen the Guilds' files on those things. They hold incredible power normally unattainable."

The pair of blue eyes quickly wandered around, with her recalling her purpose bringing memories of Camp Hope back, as clear as the day. The bullets, the flames, and that golden machine.

"If I had more power back then, maybe—"

Her right hand wandered to her own chest, touching the sizable steel shard embedded in it. Nothing she can do would bring Kenji back, but with this steel embedded in her as a reminder, the blue-haired songstress will do everything she can to make sure no one will fall into the same fate as her lover.

"—It's not important. Anyway, I currently don't have the means to utilize that one..."

She pointed to the purple gem lying dormant on the table, which the woman hasn't figured out quite yet how to turn into a power she can wield. Turning to Yugam, who was probably considering things judging by his gestures.

"... Soul Amethyst of Bein'grol. You can have it if you want. Or maybe you have something else in mind?"

Moonsong sat up as she began to answer Yugam's question. Her eyes wandered about the room as she spoke, never settling on any one spot in particular. Seeing everything, and nothing at all. Least of all him. "If I had more power back then, maybe—" Her voice trailed off, ending abruptly, the unfinished sentence saying more than if it had been completed

"—It's not important. Anyway, I currently don't have the means to utilize that one..." She pointed at the purple gem on table, before waving it away dismissively. "... Soul Amethyst of Bein'grol. You can have it if you want. Or maybe you have something else in mind?"

"God, you really are the dumbest bitch I've ever met, you know that?"
the man scoffed, his eyes narrowing at the woman in an almost derisive manner. "You have what might just be the most potentially powerful and-or destructive artifact in all of Arcia, possibly the world, and you wanna just give it to me?" Yugam couldn't help but laugh at the absurdity of the suggestion. She could sell it, learn Animancy, find someone to wield it in her name or some shit. But no. She wanted to give it away. To him.

"Guess that makes me the stupidest bastard to ever live," Yugam sighed, shaking his head, eyes closed. "Look. I have an idea." The man leaned forward, propping his elbows up on his knees, steepled fingers pressed against his lips as his eyes seemed stuck on the floor. "A way for us to both get something we want." Dark brown eyes flicked up to Moonsong's blue ones. Markedly different than the ones she owned before. These were of his design. "You'll be able to gather all the power you could ever dream of. And I'll be able to utilize that for a one-off act of God. After that, anything else you can collect is all yours. Keep collecting until the stars implode and we cease to exist, in-game, outta game. Whatever strikes your fancy." The man paused for a moment, leaning back in his chair as he did so, leaving Moonsong to mull over his offer for a moment. Light on details, but the promise was there. The chance at real power was there.

Yugam lifted his arm, extending his hand in order to shake Moonsong's. "So, do we have a deal?"

"God, you really are the dumbest bitch I've ever met, you know that?"

"Excuse me?" That one word seems to come out of nowhere and uncalled for, causing the blue-haired girl to raise her eyebrows in surprise. "You have what might just be the most potentially powerful and-or destructive artifact in all of Arcia, possibly the world, and you wanna just give it to me?"

Oh, yeah. That makes perfect sense. "It's not like you're a world-ending villain. Look, I think you could use it better more than I ever can." Moonsong reasoned. But then Yugam proposed something, his posture and body language changed drastically.

"Look. I have an idea. A way for us to both get something we want."

The woman gulped. "What is it that you want?"

"You'll be able to gather all the power you could ever dream of. And I'll be able to utilize that for a one-off act of God. So, do we have a deal?"

One-off act of God?

Moonsong squinted for a while, trying to see if something was at play here. She then let out a long exhale, before leaning forwards. "... You have saved me times before. Of course I will trust you," She reached for his hand, shaking it firmly before asking. "Deal. So what's this idea?"

"It's not like you're a world-ending villain," the woman had said. Naive, if you asked Yugam. "You and I don't know each other well enough to make that kind of assumption," the man said with a grave frown, cautioning her. If only Moonsong knew how far he was willing to go to get what he wanted. To bring her back, flesh and blood, and not just trapped in iron.

Despite his warning, Moonsong did not decline his offer. "... You have saved me times before. Of course I will trust you," she'd said. The man nodded, shaking her hand, solidifying their spoken agreement. "Right then," he said to no one in particular as he stood and picked up the Amethyst once more, its gleaming surface swirling with latent power.

"So what's this idea?"

The man tossed the gem between his hands as went back over to the bed, his eyes following the amethyst as it leapt from palm to palm, back and forth until it finally settled in his left. Brown eyes flicked to Moonsong's. A hand rushed forward, pushing against the space over the woman's heart as the man forced her down to the mattress. The man hovered over her, cold eyes staring into hers. "I'm going to kill you."

"Hey." The voice came to her from the darkness, "You're finally awake."

When Moonsong finally came to, Yugam would be seated in his chair again, moved over beside the table. His clothes were splattered with blood, the white sleeves of his shirt having suffered the worst of it, crimson, and reeking of rust. His arms and hands though were clean, having washed himself in the bathroom.

The amethyst was nowhere to be seen, but beside him on the table, the glass jar remained, no longer empty. Within it, a heart, beating, still dripping red with blood. Thin red threads kept it suspended in midair within it's glass vessel, the threads seemingly glued to the interior. "So, you see them too, huh?"

Yugam played with the purple-colored relic, before suddenly rushing towards the woman sitting on the bed. His hand pushed her upper left chest, forcing her to lie down on the sheets before his eyes gazed coldly as he suddenly said. "I'm going to kill you."

"Wh-"
Surprised, the songstress tried to push him away from the top of her, before her vision started to go dark and her limbs numb. She quickly lost consciousness, as the darkness took her.

The pair of blue eyes slowly opened to the sight of the bedroom ceiling again. Quickly getting into a seated position, she noticed how bloody the sheets, her whole upper body, and Yugam's clothes were. The man was sitting quietly in the chair waiting for her to wake up.

"Hey. You're finally awake."

"What the hell?"
She muttered silently, wondering if it was a dream. Moonsong didn't feel anything, no pain or whatever. Her head felt a bit heavy though.

Moonsong was quite taken aback upon noticing a heart still beating inside the jar, suspended in the middle of it while connected to the red threads. "... That was not what I was expecting." Her heart was moved away where the shard could never pierce it, but how was she still alive?

"So, you see them too, huh?"

"Fate threads, yeah."
She answered, having read some of the passages recorded in the guild archives. "That means you see them too. Do you see mine?"

Getting up from the bed to look at the jar closer, she noticed that her body was way, way stronger than before. Every step felt like she could just stomp on the wooden floor and break through the second floor. Not finding the gem anywhere, she quickly turned to the Hunter. "What did you do?"

The level of measured surprise that Moonsong showed was...surprising, in and of itself. The Puppet Maker had expected a bit more of a reaction from the woman, but then again, subdued reactions might've just been in their gene pool.

All the better, Yugam supposed. It meant less shouting and fighting. Sadly, not fewer questions. Does he see Fate threads? What was it that he had exactly done. Both should have been fairly self-evident, given the still beating heart in a jar on the table, wrapped in red threads.

The man lifted his wrist, a red bracelet of threads surprisingly visible to them both. "It appears you and I are linked," the man said, the red string hanging from his wrist, somehow seamlessly piercing the jar, winding its way through the bloody mass, and out the otherside of the jar, right into Moonsong's chest. "Otherwise I doubt we'd both be able to see this."

The man crossed a leg over the other before allowing his hand to return to his lap, fingers loosely interlacing with the others as looked blankly at Moonsong, his eyes evaluating his condition. He had to admit, he was impressed, both with himself, and the woman's natural tenacity. He wasn't sure that this would work, and yet, it had.

"I took your heart out," the man said, stating the obvious. "You said you wanted it as 'out of the way' as possible and so I delivered. With a bonus. In the place of flesh and blood, I inserted the Amethyst. You draw you life source from that now. It keeps your heart beating via magical link. In theory, it will continue to do so until your run out, but with ten thousand or so years in there, I think you won't have to worry. As long as your heart isn't stopped, you'll live no matter how grave the injury. Or at least, that's the working theory."
