It's been a few days since reports of something unusual happening around small villages in Dunnstads began spreading around. Although, most paid it little mind. After all... what kind of emergency could possibly be 'It often starts raining lightly even when there are no clouds in the sky' in the eyes of those who regularly faced the dangers of this world? Furthermore, some even saw it as beneficial for crops, or those who simply wanted to cool down a little in this warm summer weather.

And yet, one of the villages decided that enough was enough and the local leader posted an official notice for a Starcalled proficient in nature magic. After all, this was clearly some strange natural phenomenon. Sure enough, for someone proficient in such a type of magic, they would be able to realize that there was a clear epicenter to the rain. And in this current moment, that spot seemed to be a small lake in the middle of a forest. Truly nothing remarkable, a fairly secluded spot where you'd expect few people to visit, except for perhaps the occasional hunter patrolling the woods. But even those were far and few between these days.

Looking up at the blue skies above Vina smiled as she verified that there were no clouds visible. It was the midst of the summer, the sun's bright rays blessing the lands with warmth and light aplenty, allowing plants to grow in abundance and people to wake up early and go to bed late without having to fear the dangers that came with the dark of night.

In the current situation, the lack of clouds also meant that she was more likely to come upon the root of the quest she was currently on. It was a somewhat unusual quest, but one which appealed to her. Seeing the notice she'd immediately accepted it, curious about the contents.

Rain without clouds was certainly strange, but it was hardly a pressing issue: aside from the village head who'd put the quest up most people in the area seemed to consider it little more than a curiosity, or even welcomed it as it promised a rich harvest. That, and watching the rain reflect the sunlight was quite beautiful, so more than one villager harboured the desire for the phenomenon to continue, strange as it may be.

However, a quest was a quest, and even if Vina wasn't necessarily intending to put a stop to the sunlit rain she would at least figure out what was the cause of it. Asking around in several villages had made it clear that there was a pattern, and right now she was heading for a lake in the midst of the nearby forest which seemed to be the centre of the pattern. Her steps were light and her spirits high, as the weather was pleasant the task in front of her was one which she thought she would enjoy greatly. Humming a cheerful tune she made her way through the forest until she could see glistening in the distance, the smile on her face widening as she realised that it was the sun reflecting off the lake's surface.

Her sturdy travelling boots carried her past trees, the vulpine druidess careful to step around any small plants in her path as the front flap of her skirt gently swayed to the rhythm of her steps, her long fluffy tail matching the rhythm behind. She was already entertaining the thought of going for a swim before starting the real investigation, twirling her staff once in eager anticipation as in front of her the brown and green of the woods slowly got replaced by a vast expanse of blue, until she finally stepped past the last tree and the lake was in full view before her, sparkling like a jewel.

Now... where to begin~?

Vina did not have to wonder where to start her investigation for very long. There was something inside of the lake, swimming around at quite a high speed. And after but a few laps, the black shadow headed toward the water's glistening surface, breaking it apart in a singular motion. As the displaced droplets soared through the air and even collided with the droplets of the rain, so did the shape. Once above the lake's surface, it slowed down significantly, allowing any onlookers to fully see what it was.

A girl. Her mid-length white hair floating in the air, body stretched in almost a dance-like move before her bare foot would touch the water down below again. But instead of submerging once more, it held firm. As if the water had become solid, the strange girl twirled and continued in her presumed dance. Wearing only a leotard along with a bit of legwear and armwear, there was little to get in her way or impede her movements.

Strangely, it also seemed that the rain itself was moving alongside her. Instead of falling straight down, it bent and cascaded into a swirl that spun around the lake. In places, enough droplets accumulated to almost form a moving wall around the body of water.

Even with the rain falling down from cloudless skies the sunlight still made the lake sparkle, a beautiful sight which held Vina's attention for several seconds. Around the lake, there was a wall of trees shutting out the rest of the world, leaving only the tranquil blue below and the vast blue expanse above, with numerous droplets connecting the two as they fell down from the heavens to join the lake's body.

However, as she stared at the lake Vina noticed that there was something moving about underneath the surface. A mere shadow, too far away and too deep to give away any details, but also clearly too big to be a fish. The vixen watched with curiosity as the dark shape moved around the lake, circling several times before it moved towards the centre where it quickly grew until it broke the surface and flew up into the air accompanied by a spray of water.

Vina had been wondering whether there might be some magical beast in the lake as that could explain the rain, but she hadn't expected an elven beauty to appear. A part of her wanted to call out, but whatever the white-haired female was doing in the lake was still ongoing: after surfacing she stood upon the water as if it was merely a stage for her performance, dancing and spinning across the glistening expanse.

The rain, already mysterious enough in the absence of any clouds, became even more mysterious as it began to follow the lake maiden's movements, disobeying gravity to swirl around her like a liquid scarf which glittered in the sun's gaze. If there had been any doubt in Vina's mind that this beauty was responsible for the unusual phenomenon it disappeared once she saw the way the water followed the girl's movements.

Being a performer herself Vina had great respect and appreciation for the arts, and this dance was no exception. Planting her staff in the ground at the lake's edge she watched attentively, azure eyes shifting from the rain now swirling around the river to the beautiful figure in the middle of it all, dancing here isolated from the rest of the world.

Not wanting to interrupt the performance the vixen kept watching, eventually beginning to hum as she got a hang of the dancer's rhythm. The humming would slowly spread, not growing louder but nevertheless reaching across the entire lake, as if the melody arose from the air itself rather than the silver-white-haired vixen standing at the edge. That the raindancer had risen from the lake so quickly after the druidess's arrival was, she thought, an indication that she was on some level aware of her audience, and would eventually acknowledge her presence.

The performance did not last much longer, for while the one performing was clearly greatly focused on her movements and flow of magic, she was not wholly oblivious to the world around her. Much like a prey animal grazing, her senses were still about, and taking all happenings in.

So when Vina started humming, and the sound alien to the environment in which it was arrived at the girl's ears, her movements abruptly stopped. It might not have been loud, but to one such as Lily, it was exactly the thing she had been paying the most attention to ever since she had entered this world, and all of the sounds were still so dreadfully loud.

As she stilled herself, both legs landing on the water's surface, still treating it as a solid land, the girl's gaze went straight to Vina. Alongside with herself, the rain stopped its dance as well, droplets almost seemingly stopping mid-air before they promptly resumed their descend to the ground. It also seemed as if there were suddenly less of them, perhaps paired with the fact that the elf's chest was expanding a bit more than before, at least somewhat exhausted from what was happening mere moments ago.

In that moment of sudden peace, they both remained completely still. And seeing how the elf was not moving a muscle aside from her somewhat laboured breathing, the next moved clearly landed on the vixen once again.

Vina was surprised at the speed to which the elven beauty reacted to her humming: almost as soon as the vixen started the dancer's movements stopped, leaving the silver-haired vulpis non-plussed and actually feeling a bit ashamed of herself. With how elegant the dance had been she couldn't help but try to join in with her voice, but now her actions had brought that performance to a halt.

However... the female standing on top of the lake hadn't left or run away. Instead she was just standing there, staring at Vina as if expecting the druidess to do something. Even from this distance Vina's sharp ears picked up a slight quickening of the girl's breath, which together with the changes in the rain was a good indicator that the elf was perhaps a bit tired.

From the looks of it Vina had to be the one to make the next step, so the playful vixen pulled her staff out of the ground and considered her options. She couldn't walk on water, but she could fly... She shook her head, then smiled brightly and spoke up, her voice crossing the distance with ease to gently land in the dancer's ears as if they were standing face to face.

Hello there! Sorry for interrupting your dance, I hope I didn't startle you. (She twitched one ear.) I'm guessing you're responsible for the rain as well? Don't worry, I can hear you from over there as well, so you can stay where you are if you're more comfortable with that~

It wasn't as if she was here to interrogate the elf or anything: she was only here to figure out the mystery of the sunlit rain, and if she could make a friend in the process all the better.

As the druid picked up her staff, the girl did back away very slightly. But with the lack of any further confrontation, she had not take a chance to retreat fully. Instead, she listened when Vina spoke, her expression quickly becoming a bit of a blank stare. Opting to wait for a moment, she then nodded her head before waiting a few seconds, motionless, and only then pointing to her lips and diagonally crossing her arms in front of her.

Looking up at the endless rain, she closed her eyes and exhaled, trying to relax her body. Though she did occasionally peek at the vixen just to make sure she wasn't doing anything too unexpected. With a bit of effort, the rain slowly started subsiding until the last few droplets fell and it was no more. Extending her hand, she did a thumbs up and cocked her head to the side, expecting some kind of answer from the one who interrupted her.

Thankfully it looked like the lake dancer was willing to listen to her, even if her gesture did make Vina cock her head. Either she couldn't or wouldn't speak, which would make talking a bit difficult... but they could probably figure something out.

However, before that it looked like the other female wanted to do something, so Vina kept quiet as she watched the white-haired beauty first look up, then slowly relax. The interesting part was that the rain seemed to relax alongside the one who created it, the sunlit droplets growing scarcer until there were none left, leaving only the clear open skies and the warm rays of sunlight to shine down upon the now tranquil lake.

With the other person clearly expecting a response Vina extended her hand and returned the thumbs-up gesture, her tail wagging behind her as she spoke up once more.

You've got really good control over water, don't you~? The villages in the area sent me to figure out what's causing the rain... (She chuckled.) Although I think most of them enjoy it, actually~ It's not often you get to enjoy some rainfall together with sunlight, after all!

With the incessant sound of rain gone the world around them was also a bit quieter, making the vixen's voice stand out more. Especially since her conversation partner's voice was absent in response. Letting out a soft hum Vina thought to herself, then posed a different question.

Would you mind if I came a bit closer? I'd like to introduce myself, if you don't mind~

Once again, the elven girl narrowed her gaze a bit, but then relaxed it again and simply shook her head. She did not follow up with any gestures, but her brows frowned a bit as she did so. Not exactly expecting this to go anywhere else, she slowly started to turn around as if to leave, but Vina spoke up again, even offering a chance to come over. Something that caused the girl to raise one of her eyebrows.

Looking around herself, at the lake's surface, she bent her arms toward her face before throwing them open toward the water in a somewhat exaggerated manner while looking back at Vina. Though it was probably obvious what she meant by this, she then smiled, almost smugly, and waited with bated breath as to how the fox would solve that problem. Although, at the same time, she did stay a bit guarded, just in case there were some unpleasant surprises in store for her.

It did seem like the dancer was willing to entertain Vina, although the fact that she'd first moved as if to leave suggested that she wasn't exactly looking for company or conversation.

Which might be because if she couldn't talk conversation was a challenge to begin with.

However, the message was clear: the female elf was curious to see how Vina would get close when she was standing in the middle of the lake. The druidess smiled back at her new friend, confident but also a little eager to surprise the white-haired beauty. With how breathtaking the girl's dance had been the playful vixen might as well try to show off a little in return.

Grabbing her staff with both hands she held it in front of her and closed her eyes, once again humming softly with a tune which rose in both pitch and speed. In accordance with her melody the air around her spun into a breeze, then a swirling wind, until finally Vina felt it was strong enough and she jumped upwards.

Rather than falling back down, she remained in the air, her hair dancing around her as the music-shaped winds held her aloft. After taking a moment to balance herself (and give the lake maiden time to adjust to the display of wind magic) Vina slowly floated over the water towards the beauty in the middle, switching to a one-handed grip on her staff. Fine-tuned control over the winds ensured that the water surface below was untouched, even once she got close enough that they were within talking distance.

So! I'm Vina Skysong, and it's nice to meet you~ (She laughed softly.) I'm guessing the name is kind of obvious, isn't it?

Carrying only herself with the winds was easy enough that by this point she could maintain it almost without a thought, a part of her mind keeping the spell going even when the rest of her was focused on something else. To avoid looking down at her new friend too much she slowly lowered herself until the tip of her boot threatened to brush the water surface, her fox tail floating in the wind as well to avoid disrupting the mirror below.

Again, I'm sorry for interrupting. I'm curious, though: the villagers said that rain without clouds has been showing up for several days now. Have you been here by yourself all that time~?

Lily did watch with a curious spark in her eyes. And she did recognize a fairly familiar magic being used. After all, part of her abilities that caused the rain were of a similar origin. It helped her not be too surprised when the druidess suddenly took to the skies without allowing gravity to drag her down again, and below the water's surface. Even if that would have been a somewhat amusing sight in itself. Even if the thought alone was a bit mean toward the ivory fox.

Though as Vina had approached, she eventually gestured for the fox to stop and not get much closer. Remaining cautious even in spite of the other's seemingly kind demeanor. Still, it was plenty close for them to have a normal conversation. As the flying fox introduced herself, the elf nodded, affirming the obvious naming scheme. As for the second question... it was answered with a nod as well.

But it was clear that the follow up question would be: Why? It took the girl a moment to think of a way to showcase her reason to stay her and cause a mild shower in the area. Well, maybe it was not the most obvious way to tell someone, but she concentrated her mind again and several large bubbles of water floated up from the lake and started slowly circling around them before they promptly and unceremoniously fell down and caused a splash again.

When the elven maiden gestured for her to stop Vina did so without hesitation, the playful vixen hovering in place as she waited for her new friend's response. Despite her lack of words she clearly understood the wordplay in the druidess's name, and the affirmation that she was the one who was causing the name was met with a happy smile from Vina.

However, even if the raindancer had no words to share she clearly was still trying to convey something, so rather than blurting out her first response Vina watched with open curiosity as the other female took her time to answer a question which had yet to be asked but which nevertheless hung in the air: another display of water, this time in the form of large spheres that began to swirl around them before abruptly crashing down into the water.

Vina wasn't entirely sure she got the message, but she was willing to take a stab at it anyway.

You're here alone because you wanted to practise with your water magic without bothering or being bothered by others?

The abruptness of the bubble collapse did look like the beautiful elf was worried she might accidentally drench somebody if she did it in a public area. The vixen tilted her head slightly, silently asking if her guess had been correct.

The villagers didn't mind the rain, but I can imagine that suddenly being hit by a full flood of water would be a different story~

As the blobs of water merged with the larger body below them once more, Lily let out a tired sigh. But the druidess got it right. Another thumbs up was well-deserved, despite the fact that the girl's way of expressing herself the first time around might not have been the most apt to convey her intent. Still, she took a few short steps backward and pointed up to the skies, then shrugged.

Taking her two index fingers, she crossed them, then used those same fingers to push up the corners of her mouth up to force a smile out of her still and fairly expressionless visage. Putting all of her fingers together, she then formed the letter T with her palms and finally placed one hand at her heaving chest.

She wanted to wait a moment for Vina to interpret what all of that meant before her expression became even more blank, as if she realized something, an instead tried to beckon the floating girl to come closer.

As minor as it was, Vina did feel a bit of pride as her guess was proven to be correct. In the end, most people did enjoy solving puzzles and giving the correct answers to questions, and while the druidess was far from competitive she wasn't immune to such sensations.

However, this puzzle was quickly followed by another, the vixen remaining silent as she waited for the elven maiden's gestures to finish. The first part was pretty clear: her new friend wasn't very good at the pleasantries that were normal in social interaction. Indeed, her facial expression had changed very little throughout their short exchange so far, and while Vina didn't mind it was understandable that the raindancer would rather not put up with those who'd make a point of it.

The second, part, however... Vina did wrack her brain, but she wasn't entirely sure what the elven maiden was trying to convey there. Something about not being able to keep up her magic for long?

The gesture for her to come closer cut off the vixen's attempt at figuring out the gestures. With a quick nod the druidess manipulated the winds once more, bringing herself closer at a steady pace, slow enough that if the other female decided that she'd come close enough she could quickly come to a halt again. Her eyes were filled with curiosity, and she couldn't help but put out a question while approaching.

Am I the first to find you here?

With a question posed, Lily nodded along. Vina was indeed the first one who had found her here. Or rather, Lily wasn't even aware that there were other people looking for her as a result of her actions. She was here to test and train her newfound abilities, as many new players in TerraSphere undoubtedly did. It was something connected to those abilities that caused this entire situation to begin with, and that was the thing she was trying to convey to Vina.

She didn't necessarily have to get closer, but the girl hadn't exactly used this power of hers much yet, and she found it easier to do the closer the recipient was. And so she started concentrating... and words would flow into the vixen's mind like a dreamy river. Not carried by a voice. Like thoughts, not unlike Vina's very own. A surreal experience, no doubt, to have thoughts that were not her own enter her mind like that.

Rain Unintentional Emotions flaring Start

Another downside to being new to this whole telepathy thing was that she could not string together whole sentences yet. Or maybe that was normal and it would stay that way? Either way, she hoped that together with her gestures from before, her message would get across.

Given the lack of reaction Vina had thought that Lily was fine with her getting closer, but now it was the vixen who came to a halt of her own volition as something strange occurred: thoughts entered her mind, but they certainly weren't her own. It was as if someone had spoken to her and she had remembered the words, but the actual voice was forgotten, leaving only the message.

Strangely enough, this was the first time that the druidess was actually on the receiving end of elven telepathy, at least in a manner which couldn't be mistaken for something else.

Rain... unintentional? (She blinked a couple of times.) I saw how the rain reacted to your movements, so I thought it was part of your training... but it's more of a side effect then~?

That was rather impressive: controlling the weather was no easy feat at the best of times, as Vina herself could attest to as she'd done the same with her Aeromancy. For this elf to do so without trying in the process of practising her magic... The vixen hadn't heard of people entering Terrasphere with special affinities, but maybe if you just had the right mindset certain abilities came to you naturally?

More importantly, the fragmented nature of the message made her wonder if the maiden before her found this mental communication difficult, so she smiled reassuringly.

Well! I'm guessing the villagers will be surprised to hear that the rain was because a new Starcalled was practising with her magic, but since they liked the rain I don't think they'll mind. No harm, no foul, right~? And I'm guessing that since you're new you don't have much practice with telepathy either yet?

New Starcalled usually went to Honeyhome, where the Landers had become familiar enough with the phenomenon that they could actually give some advice even if the exact nature of the Starcalled eluded them. That this beautiful elf had ended up here in the middle of nowhere, practising on her own... The vixen shook her head.

I can also tell them something else if you don't want them to know about you~

The girl looked to the side, eyes wandering for a moment before returning back to Vina, only for her hands to move again and first show a thumbs up before abruptly switching to her hands crossing into an X shape. Though it hardly mattered, the reality of the situation was that rain could happen as a direct result of Lily doing things with her mastery, and that was a tiny bit bothersome. Even if locals were fine with that kind of weather, it didn't mean everyone everywhere would be as well.

As for the questions about telepathy and local residents, they got a nod and a shrug respectively. Especially on the topic of locals, the girl had never even met any of them, so moving her shoulders and throwing her hands to the side was really all she could do, as someone who had no relationships with any of them. As long as they were not upset to the point of trying to hunt her down and drown her like some kind of medieval witch, she remained wholly neutral to them all.

Vina wasn't really used to this kind of communication, but still did her best to keep up. A thumbs up quickly followed by crossed fingers looked a lot like "Yes and no", so... the rain both was and wasn't a side effect? The vixen's tail swished behind her as she wracked her brain. Normally she'd ask for further elaboration, but given that she didn't understand sign language the elven maiden would have a hard time explaining herself... and Vina didn't even know whether the mute raindancer knew sign language. With modern technology it wasn't exactly required on Earth, but such advances weren't available in Terrasphere.

With more training you should be able to keep your magic from causing things like rain without you wanting it to, but until then I think this is as good a place as any~

The elf seemed indifferent to the villagers, which was good in that it meant Vina would be able to explain the situation. Given how little the people in the area were bothered by the rain, she imagined that they wouldn't care much if the one responsible kept at it, especially if it meant that in the long run it wouldn't be a concern.

I'll explain to the villagers that someone is practising their water magic and that there's nothing amiss. (She looked around.) People rarely come here, which I imagine is part of the reason you chose this as your training spot~

That did mean that the quest was, essentially, taken care of, but Vina had much more to talk about than just why she was here. She liked meeting new people, and even if her newest friend had difficulty with communication the vixen would still try to establish a connection.

So... what's your name? (She pointed to the side of her head.) When you used telepathy I could understand the words clearly, so you can just beam it straight into my head~

Lily's eyes trailed off for a bit, her head tilting slightly. Maybe the beastfolk was correct, maybe not. Maybe it wouldn't really matter in the long run, either. She didn't exactly give it all that much thought herself. For now, the rain was gone. And it would return eventually. That was, more or less, an inevitability.

As for the villagers, Lily simply shrugged once more. As long as there was no super vindictive individual who'd come trying to hunt her down for watering their laundry as it was drying outside, she had no real opinion about them. She didn't even know her rain reached that far. At least she did not when Vina correctly guessed the reason why this lake was where the girl started to explore her newfound abilities.

When asked for her name, the girl froze briefly. There was still that mild hesitation from before, but she weighed the situation. Vina had already introduced herself and so far, she had not been antagonistic at all. She even respected the boundaries that were set up, which was quite rare in this time and age. Ultimately, there was little she could use by introducing herself, too. But staying true to her in-game self, of course.

The elf's behaviour did indicate that she wasn't entirely comfortable with Vina's presence... or at least, somewhat cautious. The druidess kept her upbeat and friendly demeanour, however: she thought that things were going quite well, and it was natural for somebody new to this world to be a bit shy.

When the raindancer gave her name Vina's smile brightened, her tail wagging behind her.

A lovely and fitting name~ It's nice to meet you Lily! (She indicated her surroundings.) If you don't me asking, how did you end up here? New players usually spawn near Honeyhome: did you visit there before coming here?

As she waited for Lily's answer she also thought of something else, the druidess looking thoughtful even as she paid careful attention so she wouldn't miss Lily's response. Given that the elven maiden only used telepathy and gestures to communicate the vixen couldn't rely on her sharp hearing, which meant that she had to pay closer attention than usual.

She'd wait for Lily's response before posing another question.

So... I don't really know sign language, but do you know any? In the long term I imagine you'd use telepathy to talk, but it might be a good idea for me to pick up some basic gestures in the meantime. (She tilted her head.) That is, if you don't mind me visiting more often~
