Red Fever: 1

“Seigi Ling Ling, that includes you! Stay on that fucking wagon!”

His head snapped back, eyes widening, then turning away.

As if scorched by the setting sun.

“Fuck.”

The battle ended, then and there, and Cain logged off.

She hurled her breakfast, lunch, and dinner into her toilet, chest heaving, memories crystallizing. Four years past, and the wounds reopened, but so had the bliss. Pain and pleasure, anxiety and felicity, grinding deeper and deeper and deeper until she looked in the vomit-specked reflection of herself in the toilet bowl and saw the girl she once was.

Danielle spat into it, and flushed.

A week had passed since, and amidst reality and fantasy, the downpour that drowned out all thoughts, Cain could almost forget that every belief he held over the last four years, every fucking thing that he went through and then went past, was built on a false premise.

@Seigi Ling Ling was alive. Raina was alive! Fighting still, adventuring still, somehow avoiding the deaths that she so quickly accumulated with the first year of her playing Terrasphere! And now, she was here. In Isulus. At Camp Nisus. The Red Fever ticked upwards. The camp’s former inhabitants were reduced to nothing more than viscera. A nightmare that reminded of the battle within Titanius’s maw. A nightmare, taking the first steps in once again. What was he supposed to do about this?

What he was always going to do.

He performed the last rites to the sputtering fire before him, kicking the smoking ashes into the puddles of rain and blood that had formed all around the camp. MIT could handle the investigation of the Red Fever. If they couldn’t even do that, he had no reason to work for them in the future. It would be Explorers then, that he aligned himself with. A couple familiar faces already showed up amongst those that flocked around Childress. @Sol , the redhead that he had met back in the Knife’s Edge, was there, mud-specked and forming a color-coded duo with a blue fellow. A totally separate blue Traveler stood out as well, the @Bluebird with a voice that certainly did not match her diminutive size. He managed a smile and a nod, acknowledgements for her effort, but it was early, still, for words.

They came out regardless though, as they so often did these days.

“The expedition itself is one that flirts with death," Cain spoke, walking past @Gideon . "Perhaps there's wisdom that comes with joining those who've the most experience in doing so."

"Ahhhhh that hits the spot!"

Sarina wiped her mouth with the back of her leather glove as she tasted the afterburn of her hot sauce/water mixture going down. Her rod had some fungus bits on it so she was using a small knife to peel the bits off and just flinging them wherever. Whistling a tune as she worked.

Yes, they had just been attacked by killer mushroom men.
yes, Sarina had some blinking words saying red something or other on her UI.
She was busy thinking about how cool the next battle would be though.

Flicking off the last bit and wiping it down with a towel. She gave it a spin before taking a look at the current setting. A mushroom base? That was... sorta gross considering what they just got done with but alright. It looked like several people were starting to get antsy. Why? If everyone was here to play a game. Just do it already. That amazon Childress threw a damn Zeus Bolt for crying out loud! How sweet was that?

"Take some time to rest and replenish your needs. Find the respective leaders of your group and head out in about an hour."

Sarina finally got a good look at the Lion leader, her cheeks flushed ever so slightly.

He was honestly pretty cute. Made her think of a crush from high school with that hair... Maybe she'd hang out with the Lions a bit longer.

Kat hadn't honestly been much help for the setup of the wagons. She was fast, sure, but she felt like that was all her game skills really lent themselves towards. She had built herself for sneaky tactics, thievery, and quick getaways. Not for lugging around boxes and organizing things. She was charismatic, and perhaps could have organized people, but she knew nobody. Her girlfriend still had not managed to find time to log into the game, but really that was Ryou. Always so busy.

Kat had been on the last wagon out for the expedition, and honestly, that had been for the better. She had cowered in fear at the combat that ensued during the expedition, and now basically hid under a very, very wet blanket in the rain, shivering. Kat wasn't as brave as she would have liked to admit, and she was certain the other people in the wagon were judging her for it. But honestly, she didn't care. She barely even knew what she had signed up for, and fighting a bunch of mushrooms was definitely not what she expected. Someone could have warned her.

She pulled the blanket around herself, little as it did to shield her from the elements. It looked like everyone else had made it to the camp, but her wagon was still lagging behind. She wasn't sure she wanted to be here. She briefly considered just running away, but if it was as dangerous as it was getting here, she had no chance to make it back. It was tough it out, or die. Probably. She didn't like the latter option, at the very least, so tough it out she would.

"...hfff... hfff...fucking got some, you did..."

By the time the mushroom-things had given up the assault, Schilva was once again in dire need of a nice warm shower and a soak of his clothing in high-strength bleach, though even that might not be enough to work out all the weird fungal blood-substitute these things had bled all over him.

All the sharpening of his sword had effectively gone to waste with that single clash, worn and dulled by the sheer amount of growths that had been cut through and hacked down. At least the wagon was safe!

"I am...the great Schilva Flasch. None shall harm this convoy while I stand."
Raising his sword and looking like an off-brand Statue of Liberty, dripping with slimy green ichor, Schilva blanks out for a while before remembering what he was doing before he was fighting for his life.

Oh, shit, I haven't handed that essay in yet.

-

After not having touched Terrasphere for a few days as he worked himself to the bone with assignments that he'd procrastinated far too long upon, Schilva was back.

Logging back in, Schilva found himself sat in the exact same place where he logged off, only now he was suddenly soaking wet with zero elaboration. A bucket was shoved into his hands and, before he knew what was happening, he was being instructed to bail water, bail for goodness sakes!

Despite protesting constantly that 'this isn't something the great Schilva Flasch should be made to do!', his Dynamism made him a good deal faster than everyone else present at clearing the wagon of water. Eventually, he stopped complaining and began earnestly hauling bucket after bucket of water as the promise of respite loomed in the form of an encampment on the horizon. Schilva didn't even care that it was a big mushroom, he just wanted out of the rain

Of course, the camp was not nearly as hospitable as its silhouette suggested. The state of the rain-doused scene of carnage was the first of such that Schilva had witnessed, and despite his knowledge that this was but a game, he couldn't help but avert his eyes as he disembarked his wagon, unusually quiet.

As the plans for splitting up were announced, though, Schilva's spirits lifted again. After that one time he got invited to a free cookie party, he was inclined to stick with the Lions and see if they had more to give, but as soon as he caught sight of the Explorers' League leader, he gravitated in that direction right away.

"You there! Childress, is it?"
Rather irreverently marching straight towards her, Schilva recalls how the Felis had cleaved a towering myconid in twain with a single-handed slice.
"I am the great Schilva Flasch. You may not know me, but I certainly have heard of you."
After a tense moment of eye contact, he nods and bows his head ever so slightly.
"I was impressed by your conduct in combat. Teach me your ways."

Lucas spent his time offline through the week working himself to the bone. Writing down the details of hours long stints in the game was just as exhausting as his usual work out in the field. What he'd assumed would be easier on his body was instead rougher on his memory. There was no taking notes while playing the game. He didn't have a notepad he could toss down on the desk and stare at while his laptop screen attempted to rewrite his retinas at the sterling hour of 4:00 AM.

Maybe he would actually take advantage of the travel to simply sit and rest, talking to those willing to gradually get to know the player base of the game better? Researching past the censors was a nightmare after all. The best and most reliable information could be plucked from the mouths of anyone who would share even a parcel of their story. And instead...

Alastair spent his time online through the week mother-henning, if he were frank with himself.

While he did talk to various people, they were an equal mix between the so-called Landers and the actual players. Sometimes the difference between the two was impossible to tell. Not just because of the locked in condition Levi had mentioned at his Eastern Brisshal kidnapping, but because some players acted like they were one of them. He couldn't knock it, given he'd taken up his own showmanship with ease. But even more confounding was that the Landers never felt scripted. He'd watched billion dollar Hollywood film franchises with shittier dialogue, easy. The expressions on their faces were perfect for the messy people he'd interviewed over the years. He did feel better with the fresh air and busy work healing, conversing, and eavesdropping.

And bless the freedom of the game, but he was able to procure a notebook from some of the MIT researchers and his inventory was happy to accept it and the growing scrawl within.

As soon as they were far enough away from combat, Gwyn had turned to find her age old ally and friend (@Cain Darlite). She'd found a void in his place. She pulled her hands through her hair and tugged loose the braids and binding, and settled atop the wagon they'd been perched on during it. She took her time fixing her hair back to order. A useless task she'd never have wasted time on if it wasn't an excuse to keep her hands busy while she looked. Really looked.

Besides crates and barrels and bags supplies, a horse or two, and a few unfortunate wagons? They'd all made it. The ranks had closed well enough to prove they all had experience or talent where that had yet to grow and flourish up trellises made of bone. Gwyn took them all in and found many of them wanting. Selfish and mean. Playing villains. Demanding space without sharing it. Emboldened by one victory to deadly hubris. Sneering at Landers. Sneering at UI Locks. Sneering at those who knew exactly what awaited them.

When the realization hit, it was days later. Gwyn wasn't there to have it, but Sabine had knocked her funny bone so hard she'd cried from the speed at which she'd grabbed for her phone. It made typing with one numb and buzzing thumb for a bit difficult, but soon enough she'd sent a message. It had nothing to do with a spitfire hero (@Seigi Ling Ling) or a bard song or a huntress. Sabine just asked how her last shoot went.

Gwyn spent the rest of the time at the fringes of the caravan, staring down Whistles doing the same and daring them to cut the same path she was. Nathair, shit company as the fantastically fuck off massive anaconda was, was the only company welcome as the rains started up. And she'd not taken him this bout.

Had living with a foot in both worlds felt so bizarre before?

Sepulchre's eyes shined wide with excitement as fae chortled to faerself. Following after @Kaede Hoshi had really paid off big! A whole expedition to explore a camp that vanished overnight, strange mushroom creatures guarding it, and the perfect weather for setting the ambiance too! Having met one UI-Locked person had only whet faer appetite even more for parsing together the deeper mystery behind this game called Terrasphere.

As the wagon comes to a stop, fae are about to depart when light sniffles catch faer attention. Fae step in that direction to discover a curled up blanket burrito (@Kat Otsu).

"Hey there, tiny potato. I know the faction leaders treat this mission suuuper serious and scary, but you can always log off if you need to! Taking care of yourself is going to help everyone here more than you pushing yourself, alright? I'm sure inside your house or inside the mushroom house will be a lot warmer and cheer you up. (fae pause and look up) Hey @Nero! Mind helping this person inside? I've got a seance - er, clues to go gather! Thanks for the ride mister, byeee!"

And with that Sepulchre af Umbral jumps off the wagon in dramatic fashion, only to stumble due to being a much smaller size than fae is used to. Fae manage to catch faerself with one hand, the other still holding tight to faer grimoire, and then dash off past the mushroom house toward the nearest bloodstained trail or corpse. Once there, fae check that no one else is nearby before quietly chanting, hoping the rumor that Spirit Magic lets one talk to the dead is true.

Alpha caressed the underside of the toilet paper roll, shivering as she gingerly took both her hands and, with a tender pinch, split apart its two plies. It was softness incarnate, though it paled to the superior quality of Charmin Brand™ Ultra Strong 2-Ply Toilet Paper from back before she become a naturalized Terraspherean citizen. She tore a layer apart, although it was slightly tough due to the texture of pirate skin. Alpha labored and toiled until she achieved the perfect ratio of toilet paper to rock candy ratio.

She wrapped shards in the fabric, carefully laying it on the ground in front of her. Taking her dagger, Alpha laid it on top of the folds and, with a grunt, crushed the Quartz Thrall Rock Candy.

@Jin had noticed many a strange sight on the journey to the Tangleweaves proper. In the crook of every crack, in she shadow of every man lie something that seemed to be watching. Sometimes it even watched him. The first and natural thought was that it had to do with whatever this 'red fever' de-buff was.

A new sight told him that this was not the case. As Haru appeared when called as he so oft did in a gathering with many men, Jin could see it otherwise-this man, who he'd only met in passing at the plaza before the journey began, was related to this phenomena.

It was quite easy to tell such a thing when the presence was within the man. Jin could see it-every crack of the man's frame and robe stared back at Jin. Eyes were somewhere within the darkness of the man's cloak, watching without pause. Sometimes, if he listened, he could even hear it speak to him.

You're watching me, aren't you?

@Lucy couldn't seem to notice such a disturbing sight, if how her arms opened wide to beg for a hug was any indication. The bright and sassy @Essence had yet to notice such a thing, either. Surely Jin wasn't crazy-not after seeing the presence for so long as a week. He had to be special somehow, special in a way that the others weren't. Such a thought suited him-was he not Jin, after all? It was likely his right to be able to see things that others couldn't

The monster shaped like a man returned the hug as if he were her father.

"Yes, Lucy, it's alright. I am safe, and I know you've been alright as well. You did well in the face of danger. Ha, ha, ha..."

It was not well enough. She will die if danger comes for her.

The voice heard only by Jin seemed to talk back. Haru seemed hardly intent on responding, yet Jin knew that the sage heard the voice by how his expression ever-so-slightly soured at the notion presented to him. Perhaps he really could care about this Lucy girl if his reaction was anything to go by.

Drenched and sore from hours on the road, Emilia descended onto the camp grounds visibly less inthused than in the days prior; the sudden change in weather certainly hadn't had any positive effect on the party.

Being the curious sort, the young red head had never been particularly squeamish. Bug rescues and horror movie nights had been common occurences throughout her life. But even she felt unnerved at the lack of life among the broken tents and scattered supplies that littered the area.

The silence was deafening above torrential rain.

With a slight furrow in her brows, she turned to her travel companions. @Nero, whose overall demeanor somehow didn't seem to have deteriorated despite his soggy appearance, had filled her in on the overall details of the event during the trip – briefly. Although the game's realism seemed to be reflected in its utter lack of instructions, Emilia wasn't about to let that stop her from progressing.

"Nero, do you…" She paused, swallowing the last few syllables as another person approached the brunette with his own set of inquiries. A nearby member from another wagon seemed to have overheard her failed attempt at conversation and was watching her with a quizzical look on his face to which she could only give an awkward smile before hastily turning away.

As the camp was cleared bit by bit, @Hyakin Heliodoros invited their group to follow the rest of the party towards the large towering "building" at its center. As they walked, she took the opportunity to thank the young man for his help and explanations during their trip, despite repeated assurances that he didn't actually know much more than herself.

The meeting concluded shortly thereafter and Emilia once more found herself unsure of what to do. New groups were slowly forming within the crowd and most of her former travel companions had already dispersed in opposite directions. Did it really matter which one she joined? She held her breath momentarily, feeling like the last kid to be picked for team sports.

It was then that Hyakin, who had remained by her side up until that point, spoke up like a beacon of light amidst the downpour of rain. "I'll join!" she immediately blurted out, jumping at the opportunity to stay with a familiar face.

Nero was tired, and wet, and hungry. In short, there was a lot of problems with the brunette, but the lack of enthusiasm wasn't one of them. From the time the expedition had set off, the youth had managed to somewhat expand his network... somewhat. Talking to people was difficult, but helping the group get to safety wasn't. He didn't particularly disliked being a part of the group. However much he would like to stay and talk to his wagon-mates, Nero had things to do.

When the intensely-exotic looking faerin (@Sepulchre af Umbral) beckoned him to help @Kat Otsu, he nodded to them, not knowing how he was supposed to help the blonde, other than grabbing a dry cloth and putting it over her face, in order to... shield her from the rain?

Having done his part as a good wagon-mate, he jumped off the wagon, only to be greeted by the charming giant (@Hyakin Heliodoros) wanting a high-five. Well, Nero didn't really know if the man wanted a high-five, but he gave him one anyways. Maybe that was the wrong choice. Nero stewed a bit as embarrassment welled up inside him, had he done something worthy of being captured and posted on r/WatchPeopleDieInside? He wanted to die inside.

Not knowing if he did something embarrassing, Nero quickly slipped away as his shame got the better of him. However, unfortunate was he was, another new player engaged him in conversation. The dark-haired Beastfolk wanted to talk about how cool the mushroom encounter was? Nero fought against the Beastfolk persistence to get away, he needed to get to the mushroom house and check in on what was happening. Nero has been looking for an opportunity to find magical rocks in the wild all this time. He did not have time to socialize.

With him constantly being hounded by the annoying newbie wanting to talk, he rushed away from @Emilia as well when she called out to him.

Even if his senses were assaulted by all macabre camp lingering at the corner of his eyes, he ignored everything to find out when the Guild would assemble their team.

He didn't have time the time or the mind for anything else.

He needed to keep moving.

"What's your goal? To spend your days pent up in this city? Why? You can do that in the real world. If you ask me, you're just wasting your time living like a caged bird when you could fly free. To me, THAT sounds stupid..."

Eyes opened as a girl emerged from one of the wagons after most had gone. The words lingered some as Chelsea folded her arms and remained quiet as one of those walking anglerfish (Levi) directs them to join a Faction or some such nonsense.

The only "Faction" that mattered was Earth. At one time, the answer would have been Nexus... but she wasn't constantly thinking of such things anyway. Chelsea did not in any way whatsoever come here to disprove that she was not accomplishing anything! Besides, Virtual Reality Strategy needs data of Tangleweaves. So here she was, personally.

That's why.

Now, who would give her the most information on this region for a possible guide...

Cycle 4
The Split

A full hour has passed since the briefing in the MITHRA building (3-stories mushroom house). When it was time to come back, all relevant personnel began alerting the expedition members to gather outside the MIT's building. Even if people had to stand in the rain, it was important to organize everyone into groups for the second phase of the expedition.

Levi could be seen talking with Childress about something, likely discussing about who would address the expeditions. Childress looked as though she hated public speaking, but entered a game of rock paper scissors with Levi.

The first round was double rocks. Levi took the win in the following round with paper while the felis went with rock. She cursed under her breath as she kicked a crate into place before climbing up onto it.

AHEM! Now that we've come back from our break, it's time to split up into four teams.

In case you're wondering why we were tight-lipped about the details of what exactly will be done, it's to ensure that all four factions get a fair share of participants. Just in case everyone decided to pursue the easiest option.

(Childress grimaced.)

Just so we're clear, I don't want to hear any complaints about that. The other three factions decided that among themselves. I've got nothing to do with it. HMH!

Anyways, the short of it is, the Lions will secure the camp. The Whistles will be with me and Arlynn, scouting the area ahead to figure out what the hell happened to the group here. The MIT will be researching this Red Fever thing, and the Guilders will be helping them gather what they need.

Alright. Let's get to it.

A Brief Respite

When the MIT reached their eureka moment inside the mushroom house, they immediately distributed the remedy among themselves to immunize against the effects of Red Fever. As far as they could tell, the concoction seemed to have abated the surging emotions, so they weren’t going to end up killing their own like the poor saps that occupied Camp Nisus before them. Once the formula was ready to go, MIT members spent the rest of their time mass-producing the potions with the ingredients that kept being delivered to them from the Guild.

By the time the MIT stumbled out of the mushroom house’s door, night had descended over the camp as the storm had trickled down into a light sprinkle of rain. By that point, the Lions had already claimed a heroic victory over the ape chief, covering for one another as they drove the primate threat from the camp. Any remaining apes ooked and eeked away into the jungle.

Then came the slime-covered Guilders who had made it back after what seemed like a frightening encounter as well. There were a lot of injuries among them. Anyone who did not know about the golem would have wondered why they looked so tattered from simply wrestling ingredients for the MIT’s remedy. Trevis and Caccu were among the returnees, crowded by the people who were concerned about them.

With the majority of expeditionaires gathering at camp, Elynn, who was completely disheveled, bumbled her way toward the crate filled to the brim with the Red Fever abatement potions where she gave some of her peers a near-heart attack when she tripped and face-planted herself right next to the crate. The fall must have brought out something inside her as she started bawling. One of the MIT folks decided to splash a bit of the concoction at the elf, fearing that it might have been brought on by Red Fever.

The MIT did their best to gather the other faction members in one place before they loaded up the mechanized dispenser with the concoction and had it blast everyone present with the Mist of Serenity.

The entire expedition took a few more minutes to catch its breath. Although, how anyone was supposed to find and confirm the safety of their friends and loved ones in the moonless pitch-dark camp was a mystery.

With everyone meeting up again, Levi, Chad, Childress, Feodan, Nin, and Trevis had a meeting in one of the vacant tents near the middle of the camp. The topic at hand was about the fact that it had been more than half a day since the expedition had split, yet no one had heard from the Explorers at all. Even if you cannot listen in on their conversation, Childress’ grimace from afar said it all.

A few minutes into their heated conversation, a shout from the camp’s northern entrance alerted everyone to a new arrival.

HEY! HEY! Make way, make way! I’m in a hurry…

Breaking through the throngs of people standing in the way was a tall, strapping lad with a sword through his mouth. While sprinting through the camp, the five whistles hanging from his neck rattled against his bare chest. Anywhere you can see bared skin was a bruise, a scar, or a gash. The man was a portrait of injuries. The most peculiar thing about him was his hat, which was in pristine condition except for the deep bloodstain.

When he reached the tent where the faction meeting was taking place, he hunched over as if his body was giving in to exhaustion the moment he reached his destination.

A surprised Feodan immediately stepped out of the tent.

Goodness, Kiryuu! You’re alive! What happened to Camp Nisus before we left?

Feo… not now. Childress!!!

(He shouted for Childress in-between his breathless gasping.)

When Childress headed out of the tent, the rest of the group followed her.

Haa… listen… shit… hold on… tired…

He stood up and took a big breath before trying to use every ounce of his lung capacity to speak quickly and concisely.

If you’re here, it means that Czeva was able to deliver her report… Thank god… Anyway, my group managed to escape the moment when everyone lost their goddamn mind. We found the source of the Fever, but…

Tears welled up in his eyes as he took ahold of the whistles hanging around his neck, giving them a firm squeeze.

They gave their lives so I can make it back.

After he wiped the tears from his eyes, Kiryuu began speaking again.

The Fever is coming from a demon corpse that way. Its decay is tainting the entire area with its insane magic, and it seems to grow stronger the closer you get to it. It’s not just us who’s affected by the Red Fever either, many of the wildlife is behaving erratically right now. It’s a bloodbath out there.

How are you not affected?

This piece of shit (he points to the sword sticking out of his mouth) is overriding my Red Fever condition… I’m on borrowed time here.

On the way back, I spotted a Kurungaar Mother capturing some whistles. It’s heading toward the demon corpse, ravaging anything standing in the way. If you don’t believe me, those guys can back me up.

Kiryuu turned to point, revealing the battered members from Arlyn's company who had returned just after him. Some (@Schilva Flasch, @Lady N, @Ru Ning, and @Bluebird) were forcing their way through the crowd much like he had, likely to make their own reports. Any relief is dampened by just how few of the group have returned.

Regardless, if we want to catch up with them, we need to leave, right now!

No. We are not going to pursue the Kurungaar Mother in the middle of the night, and especially not after everyone had battered themselves after a day-long battle. Go get the Red Fever cure and pull that ridiculous sword out of your mouth, Kiryuu.

When Childress finished saying her piece, she turned her back to leave. An intense anger morphed Kiryuu’s face as he flashed his fang on the side of the face that didn’t have a sword shoved through his cheek.

CHILDRESS!

DON’T YOU TURN YOUR FUCKING BACK TO ME!

I WATCHED MY ENTIRE COMPANY BUTCHER THEMSELVES, IDIOTS WHO THREW AWAY THEIR FUTURE SO I CAN STAND RIGHT HERE IN FRONT OF YOU.

WE HAVE THE INFORMATION TO ACT NOW. NO ONE ELSE HAVE TO DIE FOR THIS!

They made their choice, which is lighting the way for the rest of us here.

I SAW THEM GET TAKEN. THEY DIDN’T CHOOSE SHIT! Some of them don’t even have a whistle. You’re the one making the choice for them. My gang didn’t die just so more innocents can die.

A dangerous aura was circulating around the otherwise stoic Childress, as if her patience was waning.

Go cool off your head, Kiryuu. That kind of thinking is what leads to unnecessary deaths. I’m not going to endanger the rest of the mission. When the Lions play hero, you talk about them as if they're idiots, but when you do it, it's noble?

You swore a vow, Kiryuu. Abide by it, or turn your whistle over.

Kiryuu ripped the black whistle tangled with the bundle of whistles that hung around his neck and crushed his alone with his bare hand.

I keep my vow in my heart. I don’t need a whistle to walk beside death. I’ll rescue them not as a whistle, but as myself.

The moment Childress heard such words coming out of Kiryuu’s mouth, a 12-feet tall spectral avatar of the Beastlord, a godly figure of savagery materialized behind Childress as her face displayed immense rage.

You insolent brat… Breaking your vow and disregarding the lives that had been given, so you can stand there yapping your mouth…

Feodan who saw the exchange going south immediately stepped in front of Childress and put his mountainous hand on Childress’ upper arm as he shook his head.

Kiryuu, if we tried to save everyone, we wouldn’t be able to carry the weight of how many whistles would be lost.

We are not heroes. We push ahead and brave the unknowns, so we can minimize the loss of those who come after, whistles or no.

I’m sure the Knight Commander and Knight Captain (he gestured at Levi and Chad) would have loved to lend you a hand, if they were not charged with so many lives to protect for the upcoming battle, isn’t that right?

Chad was looking around without a single clue, while Levi scratched his head in annoyance. The mountain was far too perceptive.

As Childress’ Beastlord avatar disappear, she turned and headed back into the tent, while Kiryuu walked up to Feodan and handed the remaining whistles to the giant as tears began to well up at the corner of his eyes.

Leona, Bergsten, Yuulaw, and Riene kept up their vow until the very end. Will you put them to rest with the rest of the company for me, Feo?

You can honor your company when we meet again on the battlefield. Childress and I will be waiting.

Kiryuu gave Feodan a bittersweet smile before turning around and pulling his hat closer to his eyes. The time for tears was over. He had people to rescue.

Kiryuu spent a few minutes in the camp, but after he had downed some water and stale bread, he departed from the camp, summoning the spectral chain to guide him back to the Kurungaar Mother. He purposely left signs for the rest of the expedition to follow after him, knowing that regardless of priority, their destination was one in the same.

When Kiryuu departed the camp, the faction organizers resumed their meeting, though the tension was much higher than before as Childress sat silently in the corner of the tent. Even without the Felis' intensity, the conversation about what's next? was heated, primarily fueled by fear and uncertainty.

When they had decided on a course of action, Levi again was nominated to be the face of the group. Thus, the Knight Commander shrugged off his worn body and conjured the remainder of his energy to deliver the plan the four factions agreed upon.

I know you're all tired after a day-long battle, but it's not over yet.

If you were around to hear the first-hand accounts from the Whistles that made it back to camp, the source of Red Fever is a demon corpse that is radiating a dangerous amount of magical energy north of here. This energy is the thing that's making the wildlife as... insane... as we were.

There's also the matter of a giant creature called the Kurungaar Mother, which is a living colony of flying insects behaving erratically because of Fever. According to the reports, it is heading toward the demon corpse.

We don't know why this creature is heading toward the corpse, but in the case where it is intending on eating the corpse, we're going to have a big problem on our hand. Anyways, we're on borrowed time, we only have so long until the MIT's immunization wear off. Anyone who is able should take a quick 30 minutes break before heading out with the rest of the raiding party.

Allow me to remind you that even though it's a corpse of a demon, it's a demon nonetheless. This might very well turn into a bloodbath. The Lion Arms is urging anyone who is new to the game or is on their second death to log out at once! There is always time for heroism and this is not one of those times.

There was very few that Zelrius had found satisfying in years. First, there was rage. His inferno burned in every direction around him. From the inside of his mind, the embers ignited, and forced their way out. Forcing their own existence to be known and ripping at his vocal chords as they did. Now, his voice was hoarse, the air dried around him. Singed hairs curled and wilted along his arms and cheek. The rage turned outward. There was a brief moment where his pulsing, vein-filled eyes glanced at his diminishing HP.

And then relief came all at once. First in the form of healing. @Kyoko forgiving his rudeness earlier. @Ilusa Nakhalee taking her own sick, sadistic joy in undoing the golem's work. And @Alphabet Chocolate letting other stars shine brighter than herself.

But satisfaction was different from relief. And watching @Brutus Dahlgren make the bastard stumble and faulter with an intense, final strike was satisfying. And before long it was all over. They were back at camp. The mist distributed. Having accepted a dose from someone he hadn't met before. Someone who claimed to help. @Avery Aphelion, one of those who had tested and come up with the concoction. There was some kind of argument going on otherwise, but the golden haired man had more pressing matters to attend to. People to seek. His eyes darted around; the sullen atmosphere of the camp was unmistakable. He hadn't heard any of the conversation between the arriving Kiryuu and Childress, but it was impossible to miss it. A final battle was mounting.

He was ready. This was weeks in the making. The excitement permeated every facet of his miserable life. Days of laying awake, staring at the ceiling. Envisioning @Ueno Mizuki swinging wildly with her claws. Of @Toko's loud calls and grinning face as she got her adrenaline call. At his work, people would come up to get their Coke-Cola's, and chocolate muffins. Did he read out their final totals? No, he fantasized about heroes like Trevis, and @Brutus Dahlgren delivering sickening blows to monsters. @Hayate's terrifying sniping skills and deadpan expression. He walked past a tent with several surfaces inside. One of them still shattered, though with no vegetables on it. A reminder of those he hadn't seen in a while. @Fiora Di Angelo had put aside the frustration of that day. But what was @Sol up to? Where was she now?

The air in the camp thickened. This was it. Something worth getting hung up on. Now to wait.

Ilya had just logged back into the game, obviously at the wrong moment... Though it was also at the right moment, everyone arrived shortly after she materialized. The spray lightly stinging her skin as the effects that she had yet to experience were alleviated.

Her eyes scanned as she began to look for her friends, in the distance seeing the tall figure of @Brutus Dahlgren. Her body lightening her muscles loosening as she acknowledged that he was still alive... for now... Then her face turned beet red, she was once again all flustered and freaking out, the hot spring moment flashing through her memories.

Shaking her head she would begin to look for @Zelrius; shoving body after body, not paying attention. That was when, she saw him... Just a few feet away from Brutus and @Toko. Completely letting the thoughts of that day slide away, she would shout out. "ZELRIUS! YOU'RE ALIVE... THANK GOD." Ilya ran at him, her arms wrapping around his lower body, burying her face in his tunic. "I thought... After they said what happened to those in the explorer's guild... I thought..." Her voice was muffled from his body, her face lifting up to look at him. Tears were fully flowing down her cheeks, "I thought you might not have made it...." Unable to contain her sobs she planted her face back in his shirt.

Hanno braced himself for another combat. Things seemed far from ending, even with all the fight and cure finding being done, there was still a lot happening- And from all of that, the news of one of the Exploration's League group being stuck made Hanno's heart feel tight.

How many there were UI-Locked? How many there were Landers? Or perhaps had two deaths in their account? Not everyone would have another chance at living, but Hanno knew one thing, and that was he would do his best so he and the others going for the rescue were going to be their second chance. Something that felt particularly urgent since Hanno could swear @Laylabelle was going with the Explorers when every faction split up.

He could only hope he was overthinking.

His wounds were still not entirely recovered, but with 30 minutes of rest, he would need to make it do.

"Ready to go, buddy?" Hanno asked to @Corsair, bonking his shield and making it snap awake as it rumbled quietly and wary of the incoming fight.

With the Red Fever's effects temporarily nullified, Chrys was glad to be reunited with familiar faces. His experiences with the Guild were all but a blur to him at the moment, his senses still reeling from all the chaos that they had endured. What he could clearly remember right then and there was the absurd amount of Manashrooms he had gathered on his own. He faintly remembered himself screaming for no reason, though without the strong emotions within him, he could not understand why. Mushroom-gathering was almost always a stress-free ordeal. Then again, no one in their right mind did that on an open battlefield.

"I am glad to see you are well, dear friend. How did you fare against the affairs of the Institute? I dare not imagine the sacrifices, mental and perhaps even physical, that must have been made for you all to have come to this saving concoction."

He gave @Ayna Nietzsche a light grin as he admired her assumed contributions to the Institute's successful attempt at a cure. While he was not within the premises, with their intelligent crowd, Chrys knew that every contribution was important. Not unlike how every drop of rain fills a well to its brim. Perhaps she was even more useful to her group than he was, though he tried his best. Sometimes, not even your greatest efforts can thwart the will of fate.

That was when he noticed something odd. Try as he might, he could not find with his eyes another familiar face. He looked around them, craning his head to one direction and then the other, studying the faces he could find to make sure he wasn't overlooking any. Chrys had never been that perceptive. Someone else in their friend group was, but that someone else was nowhere to be found. Was he just getting old?

"Have you seen @Kamala Graham, by any chance? She should be here by now..."

As soon as Darko heard of the unfortunate news that some of the members of the Explorer's League had lost their lives in an area, and a subsequent call-to-arms was raised to investigate what was happening, he instantly joined in, knowing that this might be the adventure of a lifetime he was hoping for. But then, numerous screw-ups happened in some of the branches of his alter ego Miroslav's conglomeration of restaurants, and so he had to rush there in the real world and fix things up, which resulted in him missing out on a lot of things. When he was then logged in again, he then found himself surrounded by myconids in an area, which prompted him to fight them off as he then moved towards the camp where the members of the Explorer's League was last found. The sight of the blood forming rivulets in the barren ground made him gag up as he then proceeded to the large mushroom laboratory where his wounds was then treated. As he then proceeded to the briefing to find out what had happened while he was gone, when he heard of the fate of the Explorer's League members, he thought that it might be a replay of what he had been briefed before. But as it turned out, it was yet another segment of the Explorer's League, and a larger one at that, that got captured and brought somewhere, to the source of all these Red Fever things. When he heard the news, only one thought entered on his mind.

What a bunch of screw-ups. I can definitely see that the Explorer's League had a huge problem with leadership at the moment.

But even with these thoughts, he knew that they were still the same sort of sentient beings as himself, whatever their current condition, and he had to do his job to save them from a permanent death, whether in this world or the other world. And so he then moved to the blood-stained camp and then shot 21 times upwards, 7 at a time, both to test his gun and ammunition if those are working, and to honor those who were already dead, and then returned to where the other people participating were.
