Snowbreak Against Lamenting Waves
Cycle 0

Beyond the reach of the sea-mountains, wealth-warders lurked in opulent halls lit by kindling-beacons. Their grand keeps, bedecked by fjord-flame, suffer not the pale grasp of the winter, the death-lament of the witch. For the inland has forgotten Ilmea's words, has forgotten the blood-toll of that azure encirclement, and their ignorance too bids the Starcalled and starcrossed to celebrate this time of famine, where the mind's fort chases down the white terror with horn-froth enough to down a bull.

But you are not them. When winter bites, you bite back. And when the leviathans stir, thirsting to draw the mead of wounds, you answer in kind.

The Northern kiss draws blushes from your cheeks as you brave this weather of wolves. Cold has turned the tears of the storm to icicles mid-flight, shards scattering against the longships you carry with your comrades. Rune-callers, cloistered wizards of wind and rain, do what they could from the front to ward off the brunt of the storm, and yet, their efforts feel as if for not. Only the Lantern nailed to your boat, crackling with the bane-of-wood, offers true sanctum from the finger-snapping cold, and with its light, you draw closer still to the edge of the frozen earth.

BOATS DOWN, OARS UP!

A black song rippled out from the lungs of the man who had acquisitioned you your seafaring gear. Ulfr Jormundson, the feller of the life-webs, toppled his longship upon the waves. A titan of a Bearfolk, the man of the frost-sea leapt aboard, joined soon by hale-and-hearty Landers bearing whale-harpoons and axes. Turning back to face you once more, he raised his fist up, then pounded it against the drum secured upon the bow of the dragonheaded vessel.

STARCALLED! FOLLOW MY LEAD!

Lightning cracked, and the wind brought with it the flesh-crave of the beasts. Oars cracked against the ice-sluice of the ocean waves, the backs of the warrior-sailors rippling beneath their oiled clothes, their passageway lit up only by the Lantern that blazed bright with the valor of their souls.

THE DEN OF THE WITCH-SPAWN AWAITS!

This is the Prep Cycle. You may perform any action you would like on your Playsheet to prepare for the coming conflict. As well, you may...
  • Use an Action to make a Mastery or Expertise Quality Check to display your Valor. This will have a positive effect upon Tyldr's Light.
  • Use an Action to make a Fitness Expertise Check, adding the result to Progress. This determines how swiftly your party arrives at the far reaches of Ilmea's Lament.
  • Use a Bonus Action to lose 20 HP, as you redouble your efforts to row the longship through the stormy seas. This will have a positive effect on Sea-Faring.
  • Try your Luck with a Creative Action.

Adventure on the High Seas

Tyldr's Light

Let thine valor become as flame.

A blessed artifact affixed to your longship, this Lantern burns hot when ones' blood runs hot, removing the need for wood or oil to feed its light. In its presence, Frostbite fades and the might of one's arms and mind are sharpened, bolstered, and further boons are granted as the Lantern burns ever brighter.

Act with courage, and the Flames shall become as beacon.

Swear your Oath, and a God may yet witness your journey.

Sea-Faring

Brave the waves and ride the lightning.

Ilmea's Lament repels landborne intruders by nature, and one must fight both wind and waters to surpass the will of the storm. Struggle and bleed, with both muscles and masteries, in order to advance upon your foe. For it is their domain that you trespass upon, and it will do all it can to drive you back and let the elements wear you down.

Crack the oars and break your back.

Or leap to the waters and let momentum decide your fate.

Semi-Freeform

Mankind did not rise to their station through violence alone.

One may choose, at any time, to perform a Creative Action, utilizing anything to justify it, though this will be influenced by the interpretation of the DM. The DM will contact you after you post in order to make a roll. Whatever is done, it is generally safe to presume that a Creative Action will NOT do anything to directly change HP values.

Roll the dice.

Do or Die.

During his journey across Arcia, Erick's magic had begun as simply the power to gaze through time and space, and manipulate them to some degree. As the journey continued, humility taught him the limitations of his power, and the dangers that came with his mastery over something man ought not trifle with. It was through another force of nature kindred to the vastness of space that he learned to temper that immense and difficult to control power.

Holy Light.

Specifically, the light of the stars, the sunlight reflected off of the moon, and even the brilliance of daylight themselves were another source of strength. While he could turn back the pages of time, there were moments when tampering with the fabric of reality were not appropriate. There came a time when a gentler, warmer touch was necessary. A touch that, after it was complete, would not be forgotten, dissipated into the sands of an hourglass.

So it was that when he saw the Lantern, Erick was inexorably drawn to it. His fingers stretched out, played at the edges of it inquisitively, as though the artifact had been placed there by design for him to see.

"Hello, little light," Erick spoke in a soft, crooning voice as he let his palm cup the glass affectionately. "I can feel your strength, distant though it may be for now. Space and time separate us, but such distances are trivial to you, aren't they?" he asked rhetorically, a smile on his face.

"Come," he offered, spilling out guilded warmth to nurse the infant fire into a blaze, "partake of my light, that you might guide us on our path. My warmth and yours. As one."

What the f*ck did I get myself into? Chrys questioned his general decision-making as he manhandled his oar without much effort. He was cold and he was wet, but he knew he was not meant for the cold and for the sea. He was a man of the mountain, a mountain man, in more ways than one. Would he float if he fell off the ship? Or would he sink to the bottom, unable to rise again, as he believed he would? I'm made of rocks. Of course, I'm f*cking sinking, gods damn it!

And yet it was too late for him to back out now. Everyone else seemed determined to complete this quest, to accomplish their goal. Most of them anyway. The Landers, and the gods damned Bearfolk leading them, especially didn't seem like they would quit this path anytime soon. Clenching his jaw, he followed the Viking's call, like a drowning man with only that as the light he could see. Break through the ice, Chrys channeled his hatred of the cold and of getting wet to push himself further. The sooner we arrive at the far reaches of the Lament, the sooner we can get this over with.

But what of the threat of the Leviathan? That question never entered Chrys' mind. He was too busy, too distracted, with the task at hand, with getting them all to where they needed to be, to remember that what awaits them at the end of their journey, their very destination, could be icy death itself. Why would he? He has not yet died in this game before, and he has no intention of having his first death be to the cold and the f*cking wet. He'll have that in the real world, outside of this game.

Chrys was no sailor. He was no Viking. But he was a survivor. And gods be damned if he won't survive this adventure on the high seas. At the very least, he could ensure his two friends' survival.

+15 to a Save Roll next cycle from @Chrys' Savior

They call him the Lightbringer, the very icon of light and knighthood. In this harsh weather, he was the fine line that stood between their salvation and their doom. Kamala had not known him until recently when a traveling farmer shared with her his source of strength. The man was a former knight turned disgrace when he abandoned his duty to protect his wife and only son. Now his son was following in his footsteps, sans of course the disgrace, and his faith in Tyldr, his worship of the god, never faltered, grew ever stronger.

Kamala pictured the man in her head as she held both her hands together in prayer in front of the Lantern, calling out through the blessed artifact for Tyldr's Light. Despite the fear of falling off the ship or freezing to death, the panicked fluttering underneath her skin, a gift from her first death, Kamala's concentration never wavered. She knew what must be done, and while the others could take to the oar among other things to keep the ship afloat, she knew she would not be of use in physical arenas. This was her only contribution. For now.

Elven whispers carried her requests and pleadings to the Lightbringer's ears. Or at least she hoped they would. She used her own panic, the adrenaline rushing through her veins, to unknowingly feed the Lantern's light. For what is valor but defiance of fear, and hers was burning brighter than the missing sun. Let thine valor become as flame.

Not long thereafter, her body started feeling less cold, more empowered, but Kamala noticed none of that, still focused on her prayers. This was her eternal Oath, to protect her friends no matter what, even at the cost of her own life.

+15 to a Save Roll next cycle from @Chrys' Savior

I am Tempest.

I govern the storm, the sea, and the sky.

Ayna had first arrived aboard the Mizar to meet with the Bearfolk Ulfr Jormundson and his crew. With her was her own crew, including her friends, @Chrys and @Kamala Graham, who at the time needed a ride to meet with their employers. She had suggested to the Bearfolk that she could bring in her own ship, but further discussions made her realize that it would be less of a boon and more of a disadvantage for everyone involved. Would they pay her more to fix her ship should the weather take its toll on her vessel? It's no longer just wood and rope, too, having been augmented and bolstered time and time again by better engineering, with better materials, all thanks to another Magia who shared with her the wisdom of his Magitech.

With my righteous rage, I strike fear into the hearts of common men.

As she tried her best to ward off the brunt of the storm at the front with the cloistered wizards of wind and rain, those they called the Rune-callers, she realized that not bringing along the Mizar and her own crew was the smartest thing she could have done. Ayna was at least a responsible captain. She would never risk her lander crew and their ship for something this dangerous. It was probably why they were hired in the first place.

With my curious calm, I am common men, braving the storms and weathering the unknown of the vast oceans.

Ayna took a deep breath as she continued using her Aeromancy to calm the storm. It was an impossible task, but it was well worth a shot. Aside from the Rune-callers, she was the only one there who could try. It wouldn't be the worst fight she'd be in, she knew. The leviathans were yet to come.

I am chaos in the sky, and I am chaos in the sea.

-20 HP from (BA) Sea-Faring

When the veil of night blankets the cold midnight, that's when Kirius dons his dark mantle and answers the howl of justice. Confronting the injustice of nature was not his usual call, however, for nature itself is impartial. It is only when man, with all of their hubris, infect nature with their tarnished touch that it is led astray.

Kirius' agreement to embark on this hunt was partly a social contract and partly because he wanted to see whether Ilmea and her ilk are really nature-personified or if the Sea Witch is just the doing of man. Whether or not he finds the answer, he had company to answer to and a Leviathan to mutilate.

The hooded youth watched as his fellow crewmate took around the ship, spurring him to carry out his fair share. While @Erick Stryker @Kamala Graham offer Tyldr an oath, Kirius had no oath to dedicate to a divine whose sword light up the world so brightly that it casts a shadow over human evil. Where Tyldr punishes evil in the light, he misses those that walk behind him, the space where Kirius inhabits.

Kirius shook his head at @Ayna Nietzsche, who tapped into the supernatural to battle the Sea Witch - what futility - to fight fire with fire. In the wooden coffin floating above the frozen water, one's own strength is the only thing that can battle the raging storm, for if Ilmea is the master of the supernatural, then they are the master of might and steel.

The raven-haired youth looked to the person he had boarded the ship with and spoke, "The ship will need muscles to encroach on the Sea Witch's domain. Recite my title should you need assistance, @Jackie."

Kirius extended his hand and used his shadow to manipulate the oars, giving @Chrys an affirmative nod should he notice the youth. With how stuck the implement was, he would need to exert himself to get past the first obstacle. The shadow demands its due in blood, and blood it shall have.

“Do not recite the lore of deep justice to me, swordsman (@Kirius)! I was there when it was written.” she chirps back in a serious tone, but the snicker escaping her lips betrays the impression she’s trying to convey. The two of them met recently on the way here, but she just couldn’t get enough of poking fun at his antics.

Amber eyes perceive the massive fellow beastfolk for a brief moment, before she notices each member is eager to find something to do in this quest. Although she’s not fond of praying to gods and playing their games, she’d rather preserve her back for the future, thank you very much. Never mind those guys speaking and chanting things that make no sense, because magic’s like, this stuff that’s really wonky.

“Eh, what a pain…” she complains, wrapping her arms around the back of her head. Tough luck, tough life. Just another day in Arcia! It’s in this moment that her eyes catch the sight of something off about the lantern as the waves crash against the longship. She blinks a couple more times before approaching the two tending to it,

“You know, praying’s all fine and dandy, but…” her gloved hands reach forward, fixing some of the shoddy work done on the ropes keeping the artifact affixed to the longship.

“Some action’s never a bad thing.” Her hands are swift, and before long, the artifact looks a whole lot more secure on its perch. “There you go, good as new I guess!” She wasn’t about to call this godlamp thingamabob by daddy, but she’d rather not let it drown in the cold waters.

“Is this lantern even doing anything, though?” she asks a genuine inquiry about the artifact, since as a beastfolk, neither the cold nor the wind bothers her. It’s a question coming from someone with little faith in just about anything. How would they respond? @Erick Stryker @Kamala Graham

"So this here thing keeps the ship from just freezing over, hm? Hey, old bear man, how's about ye let me borrow some of it? I've got a shop of me own that could help, if not for all this blasted ice!"

@Ashifili*

The small pirate captain spoke as she stared at the lantern, flickering as if it was made that she just questioned it. Was she not showing any valor? Nevermind. She was here only because the matter concerned the sea. If there was a threat out there, then it was definitely a problem for her as well. But even beyond that, she wanted the adventure! Best case scenario, she would even come back with a trophy.

"Ah, but what a truly blasted blizzard, this. If not for me fur, I'd be shiverin' all over."

She wasn't even sure what she should be doing on this vessel. If a ship wasn't hers, then she was as lost as a Basseal on land. All of the other folk who gathered sure seemed energetic though...

Snowbreak Against Lamenting Waves
Cycle 1

The oars cracked against the crests of the whale-road as the adventurers pushed into the howling storm. The longship's mast, useless in such tempestuous weather, groaned against the sheer force of the wind as @Ayna Nietzsche stood at the prow of the vessel. The spray of the ocean struck her flesh and froze over immediately, sheets of ice layering more and more thickly over her body, but still the magenta-haired caster stood, eyes squeezed to slits as she weaved her arcane arts into their surroundings, creating a pocket of serenity behind her.

Just enough to shield two others from the full might of the storm and definitely not enough to right the course of the longship as it broke past the sea-mountains.

Not, of course, that they stood much chance of heading onwards even if the seas were calm. As the others huddled by the holy warmth of the Lantern, only @Chrys and @Kirius took up the task of manning the oars. Their back muscles flexed, spines straining against the frenetic pace that the two of them had to keep up simply in order to inch forward. It was a burden indeed, to almost literally carry the entire ship upon their backs, but they did so regardless, the God of Rock's rock-hard muscles managing the oars much more easily than Kirius could, even though the latter's hands literally bled from popped blisters that had formed.

And for those flame-stokers and oath-sayers, Tyldr's Light shone on, a deep red glow emanating from within the Lantern. Some, like @Jackie and @Charlotte Ann Marie, were more distant from the faith, but even those two felt the pulse of the Lightbringer's acknowledgement, vestigial as it was. They had earned that right simply through their decision to encroach upon the winter sea. And as for the others…

The Blade of Hope (@Erick Stryker) felt it, that entwinning of life and light, the essence of his being sanctified by the Oath he made. And with life as fuel, he would burn just as freely as the Lantern did, its divine warmth reflected in his self-effacing heroism.

The Pathfinder (@Kamala Graham) felt it, a touch upon her shoulder. The heft of a warrior-god's gauntlet, an acknowledgement that the sharpest blade could not dissuade death as surely as a whispered chant. A moment's touch, and it was gone, leaving but a stigmata of sacrifice.

Their course was set, their oaths were made. The storm continued to rage, and ever-resolute, they plunged ever-deeper through the foam-path!

And yet, it was expected that they were late.

Storm-swept waves crashed outwards, tossing longships to-and-fro, while the hardy men of Ilmea's Lament brandished their blades or threw their harpoons. Above, the clouds themselves swirled with a cyclonic wrath, centered upon the Leviathan whose form only peeked out upon the surface. Twas an iceberg made living, a seaborn monstrosity that dreamt still beneath the waves, drawn by subconscious yearnings to head landwards. And even though it had not yet fully awoken, it still called forth the storm, still tossed longships like toy blocks, still maneuvered its hundred appendages with the erratic motions of a sleepwalker!

What could it do, once roused fully, once the storm it called reached the shore?

Lightning scored the skies, the brand of the Gods lighting up the pointed crown of the beast! They all saw it then, the harpoons that had snagged upon its slimy flesh, the sturdy ropes that ensured the boats were never tossed so far away from the Leviathan that it was impossible to retaliate!

STARCALLED!

Another bolt of lightning, and the thunder that followed was the lusty voice of the bearman, his silhouette stark against the Leviathan's Crown.

ANCHOR YOUR SHIP AND JOIN ME!

And with a hefty swing of his axe, he shore off flesh from the Leviathan's body, then hurled it back out to a distant longship, the crew aboard catching it whilst fending off the surrounding appendages. It was a mad task indeed, going up against this colossus, but perhaps in madness, a berserk revelry could be found.

Here, and perhaps here alone, a battle was waged against a titanic foe not just to vanquish them, but also to feast upon them.

The Leviathan
In Fitful Sleep

❰ ████████ / ████████ ❱

Objectives and Mechanics
  • Every cycle that passes, the Leviathan will become more awake, and subsequently gain more Actions. On the upcoming damage phase, it will perform 3 Actions. One of these actions will always deal damage globally.
  • After the damage phase, if the Leviathan's Damage Counter has received more than 1000 HP Damage, a check will be made to determine if it will retreat or not, due to the damage it has sustained. These checks become more difficult for every time it makes one. Once it fails the check, the Leviathan retreats beyond the waves and the Starcalled are victorious.

  • The Storm continues to rage, and to fight in these circumstances, one must endure the cold to the best of their capability, whether by thawing it with the Lantern's warmth or the heat of your spilled blood.
  • Stacks of [Cold] are gained at the end of every cycle, with the amount scaling with regards to how far away you are from the Lantern's Zone. A maximum of 20 stacks can be gained.
  • Every stack of [Cold] reduces the results of Offensive and Defensive Actions by 5, after multipliers.
  • If you end your turn in the Lantern's Zone, your stacks are reduced by 1d4. If you are not in the Lantern's Zone, you may use a Free Action and remove as many stacks as you wish, losing 10 HP for ever stack you remove this way.

  • As a result of her attempts to thwart the wind, @Ayna Nietzsche can choose to grant either [Cold] immunity or +1 movement to 2 targets of her choice for the duration of this Cycle.

Map
  • The Map can be found here. I will be setting up the Map at the beginning of every Cycle.
  • The Longship may be moved one Zone closer to the Leviathan if Actions are used to contribute to Progress through Mastery Checks. When Progress is at 200, the Longship moves closer by one Zone.
  • Alternatively, you may use a Bonus Action to have the Longship move as far away from the Leviathan as you wish.
  • If you choose to abandon your Longship, you may instead attempt to fulfill the Requirements of the Zone you wish to enter. On a failure, you will still enter the Zone you wish to, but will be flailing in the water, and thus roll your Action with disadvantage for the Cycle.
  • If you don't have access to Google Slides, let me knowwwww.

Chrys heard the bearman bellow out his charge, but Chrys did not move from where he sat, from where he manned the oars. They were still far from the Leviathan, and he believed the others would be better suited to follow if they would while he remained at his station. He caught a glimpse of @Kirius and smirked at the boy, impressed by his dedication to their shared task. The rest can play at heroes, but the two of them? They were the big beefy arms that raised the standards of their company, that allowed the rest to play at heroes by lifting the stage, the very sons of Atlas keeping the world afloat.

He rowed as he activated his Auric Geomancy, willing barely noticeable dust and sand from every nook and cranny of the ship together as a thin membrane to help soothe his muscles and skin, keep them from breaking or hurting any further. He rowed as he caught a glimpse of @Ayna Nietzsche with the rune mages, the experienced captain of her own ship taking to the seas and the storm as only one of her caliber could. He rowed as he caught a glimpse of @Kamala Graham, the gentle but determined nature cleric negotiating patiently with an unfamiliar god. He rowed as he took stock of the rest of their party, confident that they would all see this quest through its satisfying conclusion. Easier said than done, especially for someone who could feign immortality when necessary.

Chrys was not of the sea, not of the storm, not of the snow. But Chrys was a hard man to bend, to break, and like the mountains he always associated himself with, like the element he chose to focus on for his magic, not sea, nor storm, nor snow can change that, can conquer him. Clenching his jaw and tightening his grip around the handle of the oars, he continued to fight the Lament itself, wind and waters combined. If life always found a way to become hard for everyone and everything, then so can he. Rock hard.

Never gonna give you up, never gonna let you down, never gonna run around and desert you...

Fortune favored the bold, or so they said. And Charlotte wasn't exactly very good at cooperating with people who were not part of her crew anyway. They seemed to be all buddy-buddy, but she was an outsider, almost like it was none of her business being here. So why not go ahead and charge forth while the warmth of the lantern still faintly lingered on her skin?

"Those with Hydromancy are more used to the cold anyway. Time to see just how tough this thing really is..!"

The words were more meant for herself than anyone else. After all, she was about to jump straight into the freezing water. That was not gonna be pleasant no matter what, and she had no other way of getting ahead - curse her small and slow body! Breathing in and out, she just had to do it while she still felt hyped up by the visage of the Leviathan up ahead. Leaping over the edge of the longboat, she unsheathed her heated blade and cut straight through the ice beneath before breaking the water's surface.

The next few moments were indeed quite the frozen hell as she swam underwater further ahead, only to have a chance to climb the slimy body with her freezing bare hands. Gritting her teeth, she powered through and eventually made it to a good spot where she could properly prepared herself. Although... perhaps the cold was indeed getting to her, as her draw was nothing short of bad, the oil-covered blade only barely being ignited with her pyromancy before slashing into the Leviathan's flesh.

The Starcalled made their defiance known.

A frosty witch stood at the forefront, steeling herself against the dead of winter. She took the brunt of the cold that the others might not have to, and Erick could see the sheet of ice spread plainly across her flesh. It looked like agony in the form of frostbite. He remembered winters on the Great Plains, and the dangers of falling through ice in subzero temperatures.

Thankfully, she was not in this alone, nor were they unprepared for the blizzard. Another man was as patient as stone behind her, a gentle light though different from Erick's own, flickering around him. It spread outward at its masters whim, coating them not with warmth, but with resilience. A vaguely familiar earthy aroma permeated around him and his chosen allies, reminiscent of the land they had left behind.

And then, there was the healer. The other who took up the Oath, but her own words were chosen differently, the promises they made and the aide they requested were appeals made to the same distant star, yet they took on forms as unique as the Travelers themselves. The Oath of a Martyr, and an Oath of Ardent Flame.

There was scant time to reflect before another woman rushed over the side of the boat, diving headlong into the icy and stormy sea. Erick's gaze followed her in alarm, but before he had time to protest or weave his magic to yank her back from oblivion, she was already gone. He grit his teeth.

At the first available opportunity, he would try to spirit her back to safety; but his priority in that moment lay with the allies that had not thrust themselves headlong into the maw of an insatiable serpent.

Erick did not have the luxury of simply leaving the ship behind. The darkly dressed @Kirius was one of the few members of the group who wasn't already elbow deep in magic defending the ship, and so, logic followed that he would be one of the main offensive attackers. The other anomaly, @Jackie opted not to offer words or create a bond with the lantern, rather she worked to better secure it to the longboat.

Those were the two that stoked his interest.

Is this lantern even doing anything, though?

The girl's question prompted a genuine smile from Erick. There were those that didn't know the comfort of a candle on a warm night when there was no electricity, when a body had to huddle close not to catch a chill. "Be patient," he counseled, "you'll be thankful for even the smallest flame in the heart of a winter storm, I can promise that."

For that was precisely what had fallen upon them.

He stepped calmly toward the bow of the ship, weaving the firelight that had linked with him into a wide array of warmth, cocooning the others within its protective light, behind him. In so doing, he channeled those defensive energies into himself, to become the Bulwark against the Creeping Chill.

Serpent that dwells in the dark below
I bright down a light to expunge shadow

The protections afforded by the Lantern securely in place, Erick brought down the Hammer of Tyldr on the fell beast. His hand stretched out, shaping Light and Gravitic force into tangible form, and it came sundering down on the Ancient Evil.

Ayna tried her best to defy the storm, but even with the aid of the Rune-callers, or was it the other way around, they couldn't even correct the longship's course as they broke past the sea-mountains. What she was able to do, however, was protect two of her friends from the Cold, and for now, that was enough.

She was still at the prow, still fighting the frozen ocean spray that clung to her like the stink of her first death, when she heard the bearman's scream. Finally, some action! Brandishing Stormy Night, her spear, she called out to the others without turning to them.

"YOU HEARD THE MAN!"

As soon as the words left her lips, she was gone, off of the longship, using the cold ocean breeze and the very lightning surging through her veins to propel her through the biting ice of the waves and at the slumbering Leviathan's crown. Something else was at play, however. She could feel something strange rising up from within her or maybe surrounding her like a divine cloak, invisible to everyone but definitely magnifying her strength. Is this because of Kamala's prayer?

Once the duelist was in range, Ayna lunged at her quarry, immediately thrusting her lightning-charged polearm at the mighty beast of the deep before spinning back around with a wild slash at the air. She then pushed herself high in the air with a single small step, propelled by wind and lightning together, before thrusting downward at the Leviathan once more, as if her lightning-charged polearm was lightning itself and she was the invisible hand that guided its fury.

❰ Appearance of Calamity ❱

A maniacal grin formed on her lips as she savored the faster beating of her heart, the ocean spray that immediately froze on her flash, and the sheer size of the beast before her. She envied the bearman's people. If this was a mere slice of their lives out here, she would have the entire thing. This is why I built the Mizar! This is why I relocated to Dunnstads!

What was that? Kamala gasped and squirmed when she felt something on her shoulder. Did someone try to touch her without her consent? No, no one's...there. The hand felt heavy and sure not unlike their freezing hands out here, and almost immediately, as if it never was there, it was gone.

Before she had any time to ponder on what all that could have been, even though her gut was telling her it was the Lantern's god answering her prayers, or at least acknowledging them, the Leviathan's intimidating form came into view. Is it...sleeping? And therein lies a problem: Kamala initially felt that attacking the beast while it wasn't prepared would not be right. It was unarmed and they were fighting dirty, but then she realized it didn't really need to be armed. The beast was superior to them in every way, a predator that could destroy homes and lives without much effort: They needed to do what they could before it woke.

As she caught a glimpse of three of their party already joining in the fight against the Leviathan, she instinctively began to channel her magic to aid them just in case they woke the beast's fury. Beseeching the mending spirit of nature, graceful swirls of green and white light began dancing in the air around her while phantasmal green leaves wafted through the air as the light bathed @Ayna Nietzsche, @Charlotte Ann Marie, and @Erick Stryker. All three would a whimsical and playful tune throughout, as a sensation of gentle warmth and the smell of spring flowers round out the accompaniment to her spell. The illusory sanctuary has been dubbed the "Garden of Gwyndolainn" by elves from Yladia, but without access to that region, that perception was hard to verify. For now, just have faith.

❰ Heart's Illusion ❱

Kamala kept a close eye on her valorous friend, the captain of the Mizar, knowing in her heart of hearts that her Oath must be kept should Ayna fall in danger. I know what I must do...and do it soon, I must.

Catching a glimpse of the God of Rock (@Chrys) smirk and replied with a nod of acknowledgement. He could feel a bond between the two oar-men, who served as the backbone of the ships struggling against Ilmea’s wintery wrath.

Alas, as soon as the flashes of lightning revealed the monstrous outline, a grin came to Kirius’ stiff face. His challenger has appeared, marking the end of his oar duty. Upon the words of the bearman, the fledgling Shadow Lord called out to his boarding mate, struggling to speak over the chaos that had befallen the ship.

@Jackie, my prey is here. Take over the oar for me,” the boy hoped his message reached his partner.

Afterwards, he turned toward @Chrys, holding his hand over the man. Seconds later, a stream of shadow hissed as it poured forth and shrouded the man. “The shadow watches over you. Should any harm come to you, my blade will cut them down.”

Kirius then headed up to the starboard, where he saw the silhouettes of @Ayna Nietzsche and @Charlotte Ann Marie fading in the distance.

“Tch.”

Knowing that the spiteful storm was going impede his path forward, Kirius changed his priority to fending off the Leviathan from the ship for the moment as he waited for the opportunity to hunt his prey.

When @Erick Stryker stepped up to pull the Leviathan’s wrath onto himself, Kirius turned into a blur before appearing behind the man, blade bisecting an appendage that aimed for his turned back.
There wasn’t a spared second for dialogue, however, as he disappeared once more and appeared where another tendril reached for the healing elf @Kamala Graham. The blade obliterated the monstrous appendage the moment it made contact with its flesh.

Appearing behind the elf, Kirius stood up and gazed at the distant prey with glowing eyes, making his declaration known if even if it fell on deaf ears, “this vessel is under the protection of the Shadow, harm its crew at your peril.”

Snowbreak Against Lamenting Waves
Cycle 2

Steadfast as stone, @Chrys continued to wage his war against the sail-slayers, waves crashing against his chiselled body and the wind slicing the spit of the sea into his senses with every push and pull of the oars. No common man could have done this alone, and yet the man strove onwards, muscles rippling like the titanic waves that sought to drown them all out. And in his shadow, the Shadow flickered, flashes of lightning capturing only the instant in which @Kirius drew his blades. The youth's proclamations were drowned out in the corona of Erick's own challenge, but that did little to stem the lethality of each strike, errant tendrils splattering against the deck as their roots wriggled in instinctual agony. It bought @Kamala Graham time enough to complete her spell unimpeded, the zephyrs of spring offering their benedictions to the vanguard moments before they launched off along the spine of the beast!

@Ayna Nietzsche arrived, the Spear of Stormy Night matching the fury of the tempest that swirled above! T'was a blow as if from Thor's Hammer, t'was a blow to stupefy a dragon! But against the sheer mass that made up the Leviathan's Crown, had it even scraped the surface of its skull? And if Ayna's blow could only shear flesh, then @Charlotte Ann Marie's blade did even less, the oil sputtering weakly, flames whisked by the banshee cries of the sky. Drenched by the ocean that she had to swim through, the beastfolk could already feel the cold seep into her bones, the salt stinging the small scrapes she had suffered during her approach of the Leviathan. And beyond that, perhaps she was the only one present who could truly hear that heartbeat. Slow. Lethargic. Measured. Calm.

But gradually picking up. A dreamer, beginning to rouse itself from a deep sleep, pulled away from its slumber by the wrath of the mother, the cold of the waters.

Up, girl!

A heavy hand clasped over her forearm, snapping her out of her senses. Ulfr roared at her, and before Charlotte could register what was happening, hurled her towards Ayna, who was already on the move.

On the move, to dodge the bolt of lightning that the Leviathan had called upon itself!

A cascade of energy struck its Crown, instantly vaporizing all the water that had been upon its body. Steam exploded, scalding chilled flesh indiscriminately. Even though the two Starcalled had dodged the bolt itself, they could do nothing to evade its aftereffects. Any exposed skin blistered at the impact, and all the pain they felt was sharpened by the salt carried by the steam, crystals digging into newfound crevices upon their bodies.

Atop of the Leviathan's Crown as they were, neither Charlotte nor Ayna could see it.

But @Erick Stryker, poised at the bow of the ship, illuminated by the Lantern's divine providence, certainly could.

Within the darkness of the storm, the Leviathan's eye blinked open. Like a lighthouse, cutting a swathe through ocean spray and gale-force veils. Like a child, gradually rousing from its slumber yet still favoring the pleasant sensation of sleep over the cravings of its body.

And what was Erick, if not an annoying shaft of light, poised perfectly to shine into its eyes?

A stirring of its body, a flick of an appendage, and the ocean surged upwards, slamming into him with the force of a battering ram! He withstood it, a Bulwark still, but he knew too that twas only owing to distance that saved him.

In another time, in another place, the Blade of Hope would have been dragged beneath by the undertow, drawn and drowned within the envying embrace of the Sea-Witch.

The Leviathan
On the Cusp of Wakefulness

❰ ████████ / ████████ ❱

Objectives and Mechanics
  • Every cycle that passes, the Leviathan will become more awake, and subsequently gain more Actions. On the upcoming damage phase, it will perform 4 Actions.

Cycle 1 Resolution

Cold Stacks

  • @Ayna Nietzsche @Charlotte Ann Marie receive 4 (3 + 1) Cold Stacks.
  • Others would receive Cold Stacks, but due to proximity with the Lantern or Cold Immunity, the afflictions were negated.

Damage Taken
  • Stormcall: @Kirius @Kamala Graham @Chrys receive 15 (30 / 2) HP Damage, due to their distance from the Leviathan. @Erick Stryker receives 0 HP Damage, having negated the effects with his Ultra Counter. @Ayna Nietzsche and @Charlotte Ann Marie receive 60 (30 x 2) HP Damage, due to being Vulnerable.
  • Undertow: @Erick Stryker receives 20 (40 / 2) HP damage, due to their distance from the Leviathan, but resists being dragged beneath the waves.
  • Thunderclap: @Ayna Nietzsche receives 50 (25 x 2) HP Damage and @Charlotte Ann Marie receives 40 (25 x 2 - 10) HP Damage. Charlotte failed the save, but owing to Ulfr's intervention, does not suffer any of the effects.

Boon of the Lightbringer [850]
  • Fortune Favors the Brave: Every Offensive Action made grants a flat modifier. This modifier increases by the number of Offensive Actions made during the cycle, and is updated at the end of every cycle. For this Cycle, Offensive Actions gain a +80 flat modifier.
  • ???: Unlocked on the next tier.
Oaths of the Starcalled
@Erick Stryker The Lantern's flame persists within you as well. When not on the same zone as the Lantern, you may burn 30 HP to bathe the zone in the Lantern's light, preventing allies from getting stacks of [Cold] from environmental effects.
@Kamala Graham You are the lifeline of your friends, and if need be, you will offer yourself in their place. Immediately after the damage phase is resolved, you may swap positions with them, taking both all the damage they would have taken, as well as any negative status effects currently on them.

Do or Die.

"Ayna!"

Without even hesitating, Kamala offered herself in the purple-haired duelist's place, fulfilling her oath to Tyldr. One moment she was screaming for her friend's safety. The next, she was delivered so close to the Leviathan, her eyes widened in horror and the heart tried to run from her chest. Oh, gods! Quickly, Kamala retreated back to their longboat where she found Ayna standing where she herself was moments ago.

"Thank Tyldr, you are safe! Let me just..."

Kamala put her hands together once more and closed her eyes, channeling the mending spirit of nature to keep her and her friends alive. Once more, the so-called "Garden of Gwyndolainn" answered her call, manifesting to Chrys and Kirius, as well as herself, as a a translucent and mystical shielding barrier that healed them over the brief time it persisted, though she was forced to take root where she stood. It was first heralded by graceful swirls of green and white light dancing in the air with phantasmal green leaves that wafted through illusory barrier's entirety before a whimsical and playful tune played and a sensation of gentle warmth and the fragrance of spring flowers was respectively felt and smelled by those healed.

It was a brief respite from the cold and the massive threat of the Leviathan. Yet the creature was almost awake, which meant that things should only get harder and definitely more dangerous from here on in. She couldn't fault the beast, as it was just defending itself. But she couldn't fault the people of the Lament as well, as they were also trying to survive in their own way. May the gods have mercy on all of us...
