Ouch ouch ouch. She was supposed to be the tank, but this was a little too much even for her. Her feet were burning, she was being dragged around by a deformed murder cat, and her ally Jin was smacking her. "Watch where you're swinging that thing moron!" She called out angrily to @Jin. She wriggled in its grip, managing to free a leg. She slammed her heel into the Trinity's face, finally managing to untangle herself.

She regained her balance in the sludge, taking once last look at the Trinity before taking off towards the boss. She needed to make absolutely certain that if it started blasting it would target her. From her point of view her other party members were not in a position to take any big hits. It was her duty as an envoy of Endra! An aura of protective light would appear around @Herrscher; Athena judging she needed it the most. Now right in front of the boss, the priestess raised her sword, a large sword of divine light materializing in the air only to fall blade first onto Unknown. "Over here!"

There was so much noise, so much pain. She could hear the numerous screams, the whimpers, the very dripping of blood as the conflict continued. Bracing herself, she followed the flow, moving through the pain of the burning sensation that swamped over her, knowing that others needed her.

"May...my sacrifice...bring longevity to...those in need!"


She felt the spell release from her, the spirit like connections visible to her reaching out to those around her, covering their own glows with her purple-shimmer, before closing over the few wounds, burns and other ailments that covered their body.

"May my Soul, impart upon you health and wellness."


She finished her connection with the phrase repeated, before slumping slightly - the toll of giving to others beginning to drag on her, wearing her down almost as much as the assault from...whatever this thing was, and the noise all around.

Travelers Gate: Boss Challenge

The freshly born Trinity fake was cut down before its formation even concluded. It melted into the darkness just as the miasma reacted to the pain the monster felt. Channeling the red lightning into the group once more.

How they gathered before it. Like mice that thought by staying still, they would be spared.

As if it would be a gentle master, like the one it awaited.
They would not.
They would tremble before it devoured them.

Unknown finally took steps to shatter its prey. A screech that shook the bones, the mind, the soul. The space throughout the chamber rippled as it screeched a dimensional cry that would probably leave @Kyra Vashtana in great despair and possibly mental shock.

The remaining Trinity(?) as well was shaken and trapped in its position. It released the toxic fumes once again yet with no one around it simply trembled within its putrid cloud until the gas dissipated.

The miasma was starting to bubble even more from the base of Unknown. It hiccuped as its clawed hand went to its grinning mouth in a near comical sense of shock and its eyes widened. The hairballs just kept coming!

The innermost chamber of the Travelers Gate. A wide open space with many jagged and deformed objects jutting out of the walls. The stone floor rises some in the center where a single giant symbol has been engraved into it. It has unfortunately eroded to the point of being impossible to recognize.
  • Victory Condition: Defeat (?) Unknown.
  • Defeat Condition: Party is eliminated or retreats.
  • This encounter will be rerun in the future if failed. The cutoff point for reruns is Season 5.
  • All Actions recorded on your linked sheet from the LFG are usable. Including any 1 equipped Extra Slot ability.
  • Surge and Twice are available.
  • If the cycle damage put you at 0 HP at the moment of your posting, you may use Second Wind to negate some of the damage. Note that this ability is essentially an on-demand heal and therefore cannot negate over-damage.

Athena slammed her hands over her ears as Unknown screeched, momentarily losing the 'sight' granted to her by her echolocation. She shook her head, another blast of heat from the miasma burning deep into her legs. She let out a quiet gasp, hands finding the hilt of her sword and gripping it tightly. She glanced around, senses gradually recovering. Her allies looked to be worse off than her. It looked like it was once again her duty to draw attention so that they could rest and recover.

"Healer, help the critically injured and get out of the miasma!" She called out to Kyra, raising her palm toward Kyra to envelop her in a warm, gentle protective light. Athena dashed off through the miasma swinging her sheathed sword at the remaining Trinity, the massive blade bonking it on the head as she tried to keep it's attention. "Ill stay and here draw attention, the rest of you regroup and recover!"

Falling back to get some distance between it and himself after It let out a horrifying screech, he immediately fell to one knee upon reaching temporary safety, the pain having grown too much for him to ignore any longer. With the tip of Murasama jammed into the ground, he used It to himself steady, allowing him to watch the battlefield from afar but upon doing so, he found himself sicken by what he saw, causing him to close his eyes in disgust. Upon seeing his companion, @Athena willing to sacrifice herself so that the others could regroup and recover, he found himself further disgusted. He hated the fact he was leaving her to her own fate but he couldn't do anything for the time being. That sickened him greatly, triggering the man to grit his teeth.

Forgive Me Athena....but I can't do anything...


Muttering those words under his breath, a stream of blood began running down his chin.

That scream, shrieking out into the abyss. Her ears pinned as hard as they could against her head, trying to drive it out. She felt herself squeak in pain, the sound entirely unaudible to her against the shriek of...whatever that thing was.

Once again she released her Spirit, feeling the connection between the two near here, letting out a slightly shriek in response as her own essence tore itself to heal those around her, before returning its focus inwards. She shivered, the experience torment - but somehow warming at the same time.

"May my Soul, impart upon you health and wellness."


Her chant had become numb, as she fought against the pain. She could only think of one thing - escape. Escape from whatever this hell was. Forcing herself to her feet, she shuffled across the floor, out of the darkness and towards safety.

This was not good. The air was thick, and unbreathable, the screech was ear piercing. He could feel the way that it went from a high pitched shriek to a muffled call. The way his eardrum tore and gave up, even with his palms over the feline ears. There was small relief offered in the next moment by the violet-foxgirl support they had with them, but at this moment, Zelrius needed to orient himself, and rethink positioning.

His blades and arms crossed into an X in front of his face, bracing and giving his form the surface area it needed. In a moment, fire spread from that centrail point, turning Zelrius into a roaring ball of orange sparks and flames. Burning away the miasma and heavy air in his path to make away out of the area of effect. Once out, he was quick to bend down, and rest on his knees. Lungs sucking up as much of the clear air as he could get, and spluttering out the corrupted air that had been breathed in.

Herrscher takes a lot of damage, receiving one injury after another. Things were getting bad on her end, as well as the others. She needed to back away but seeing one player engaging Trinity(?) A, she decided to help them. Not reading the dangers of doing so. So with the lack of experience (and thought), she moves around and sends her shadow knight to aid @Athena in her fight against the add.

The Shadow Knight glances back at his summoner but fails to hesitate as he starts rushing in. Moving fast and attacking the add while Herrscher remained at the back. Vulnerable, without protection.

The situation was not playing out in their favor.

Confusion had robbed one of his allies (@Athena ) of health by his own hand, a point which was more annoying than regrettable. She made it his business with an outcry, but quickly shifted her attention to the add and subsequently taunted. Her health maxed out higher than his own, but ultimately, she had less health left than he did. Misplayed that one, he thought quickly.

But to taunt it back now would be a waste, and ultimately put them both in a compromised state. Health was a scarce resource. They had to play more efficiently.

Then, @Herrscher moved in to strike, and he bit into his lip. The aggressive playstyle here was suboptimal, and they were burning their healer at both ends. It was time for him to withdraw and get a bit more greedy with his own health. Jin made a quick dash out of the aura of darkness and activated a pair of his support skills. "Bloodrush," he muttered beneath his breath.

Ideally, he could remove a bit of pressure from @Kyra Vashtana while setting himself up for the next attack.

Travelers Gate: Boss Challenge

The party having suffered the screech of Unknown was now scattering. However, Athena stood resolute and continued to hold the lone Trinity(?) at bay. The Trinity took the blow and another much stronger attack from Herrscher's own shadow summon.

After being struck around some, the Trinity would take an opportunity and unleash its grip attack once again on Athena, who was certainly a popular target for these creatures. It immediately began dragging her around. It almost seemed like it was winding up for something rather than just a feast.

Meanwhile, Unknown watched as its prey scattered.
Now it was time for cat and mouse!

The monstrous shade sank into its miasma and emerged near the retreating group. The great distances it covered with this would be akin to teleportation or dimensional hopping. They would never escape its playful grin and grasping claws!

HACK!!! SPLAT!!

Another blob shot from the creature's mouth. However, before hitting the expanding miasma on the ground. It seemed to go up in smoke...

A Shadow Cloud appeared!

Those who had not forgotten their journey through this dungeon in this horrific battle may have remembered the horror of one of these shadows emerging and the consequence of not dealing with them properly.

The party, however, may have been caught up in the site of the miasma.

It had expanded, it had become near inescapable and you may also notice as your UI begins to flash warnings your tired body may be ignoring...

Fear gripped him, as he turned back to watch the cloud of miasma engulf a new area. His health was low, his needs running dry. Time was running out, and hope seemed lost. His first instinct was to turn on his heel, and sprint back down the cave. To warn the horde who had come down with him of what was ahead, and not to trifle with it.

He could hear the hacking and spluttering of the boss inside of there, and knew that somewhere in there, Jin and Athena were fighting for their lives.

He couldn't just leave them. That's not who he was. - More accurately, not who he wanted to be.

His feet moved first, taking him back in the exact direction he came, seeing the Trinity(?) with its glims on @Athena . She protected him so many times in this fight, and he'd return the favor. His swords were dropped, clanging to the ground The blonde reached a hand forward, grabbing onto the blindfolded woman's arm, and forcefully yanking her out of the way to his right side. His right hand forward.

"BURN!" He commanded the enemy.

Though weakened and feeling very hurt, Herrscher holds her ground. She watches her allies fight and support each other so she has no reason to be afraid. Now filled with more confidence, she continues to command her summon to fight the add.

One swing after another, the Shadow Knights damages Trinity(?) A. Then seeing an opening as the add gets weakened thanks to @Zelrius, Herrscher uses this opportunity to have her knight land the killing blow. Ignoring her defense once again.

"Medraut, now's your chance! Finish it!"



The knight's eyes burn with blue flames. He obeys his master and releases several attacks at once with his great sword. Each striking the add and eventually finishing it off.

"Yes! Good work, Medraut!"



Herrscher winces, inching closer to being unconscious. Perhaps death. But though her legs start to feel weak, she stays standing! She is here to see the fight over with a victory above their heads. At the very least, for her party members.

Forward, always forward. Her ears rang as she was snatched up once again by the Trinity, the abomination tearing into her skin. Her arms and legs felt numb, her most powerful sense impaired by the sheer amount of damage she was taking. She felt someone move her body, her hearing coming back to her like a wave crashing onto the shore.

"BURN!"

She heard faintly, her magic sight exploding into light and color as the flames burst up around Trinity. Her eyes blinked under the blindfold trying to remove the spots. Forward. She raised her arm, her muscles aching and numb. "Forward." She muttered to herself, protective golden light forming around her savior @Zelrius once more. With her other hand she summoned another sword of divine light, her divine judgement raining down on Unknown once more.

With that done, Athena stumbled. okay, maybe backwards now.

She squelched her way through the miasma until she finally made it out.

He felt the pangs of hunger like a serpent depositing venom directly into his stomach. It spread quickly from there, sending waves of fatigue through his body that warned him: he needed to eat. He needed to slake his thirst. His status had deteriorated all at once with the onset of that strange cloud. They were on a timer now, because if that happened again, he wouldn't be able to think about anything else.

This enemy needed to die.

With a grunt of exertion, the Bloodsworn cast off the shackles of weakness and concentrated on the task set out before him. Jin threw himself through the darkness toward his prey, bringing his weapon to bear. The katana sliced clean through the darkness, though what effect it may have had remained obscured within the depths. He alighted on the tainted floor crouched low, breathing slowly so as not to expend oxygen so quickly.

The pain wracked his body, but he remained focused.

Thanks to @Kyra Vashtana's healing prowess, he felt some of his pain dissipating but the rest screamed otherwise. That was the moment he knew It was time for a tactical retreat however. He knew imminent defeat when he saw it and yet to his amazement, he watched his comrades throw themselves into the battle despite knowing they would most likely perish. He gritted his teeth, there was no retreat now. He wouldn't abandon his comrades to their fates. With a grin, he closed his eyes, It seems he would have a warrior's death after all. He guess he was a fool too. Before he bring death to himself however, he yelled at Kyra whom beginning to show synonyms of combat fatigue.

KYRA! YOU CAN DO THIS! REMEMBER THE COURAGE YOU SHOWED IN THE GAUNLET! YOUR COMRADES ARE COUNTING ON YOU!


He wish he could say more to motivate her but there was no time left. Activating his skill,

Everyone was too far. Too far for her to reach out, to mend, to provide care. She'd saved herself, stepping away, but she'd left the others to their fate - something she wasn't sure she'd ever live down. Not that it seemed to matter, right now.

She watched as the others quickly downed the Trinity beast, before turning their attention to the main threat - the large shadowy creature that screamed, and taunted, and tried to end them. Kyra considered the situation, considered her options. She could reach Jin, she could heal him, keep him going...but for what? Would that change the tide? Would that help anything.

"I...have had...enough of you!"


She screamed out as she rushed forward, getting as close as she dared to the shadowy form. Launching herself into the air, she lashed out with the scythe, letting the blade swing forward before following up with the dart at the end of the chain. Landing, she called out towards the creature, summoning her courage.

"Come on, you absolute bitch! You want to eat a soul, come devour me!"

Travelers Gate: Boss Challenge
The party had reached a moment of indecision. A Beginners Cave indeed, a Beginner Murdering Cave! If this thought went through your mind in these final moments. You were likely not alone. The shade's Trinity fakes continued to be slain only to be replaced. The Shadow Cloud preparing some unknown attack, and yet even when you were so deep in shit and the door to turn around and run was so close...

You stayed.
You fought.
You put your life on the line just as the Starcalled always did.

Foolish? It would be up to the world to decide.

Once again another series of attacks. knowing full well by now that the pain transfer would be swift and your life possibly ended, Unknown continued to take direct damage, not able to hide behind its shadowy veil.

It screeched, this time not in rage, not in painful fury... but in uncertainty. Perhaps the first inkling of whatever fear would be like for it? Had for the first time in so long it found prey that would fight back? Its tail emerged from the miasma pool, it swayed excitedly yet still uncertain how to proceed. It had not preyed upon such things in so long. It was so accustomed to freezing its prey through its screech and then just playing with it until it was bored, much like..

Chesire.

The creature's ears perked up. The Shadow Cloud dissipated.

Chesiiiiiire wherrreeee arrrrre youuuuu?

Unknown began to sway, its grin somehow getting even wider. The voice! So much to get excited about! And so Unknown began to shrink. It pulled its miasma towards its body, leaving the Travelers to freely breathe again. Its four limbs began to twist as it bent over and fell upon two of them then the other two as hind legs.

"Prrrrrrr...."

As the world around you seemed to freeze frame beyond your control. Some of your party members may have noticed various things at this point.

@Athena surely saw the sudden manifestation of energy in the room. Although she could not seem to turn to face the source of this energy in any amount of time. The energy that passed was running parallel to the chamber they were in rather than within it.

@Seto Kurama for whatever reason was more aware of the movement. He could see her. A blur yet very much human. At least in shape.

@Kyra Vashtana would feel with her Primal Aura the creature's sudden change in temperament. It purred as it dashed and dimensionally jumped into the newcomer's arms.

@Herrscher shadows would immediately retreat to her side. They would whisper among each other If she listened perhaps she would hear them. The name...

"Elica Mirg dear narrator, oh I'm sorry DM! I'm not even canon so you can stop being so dramatic! Welp, maybe in @Vesuvyan headcanon I can be the main character. Alas..."

Unknown or rather, Chesire, leaped into its long-awaited master's arms. The black and red-clad female, was no longer a blur as she stood between the exhausted party and held the horrible abomination close to her face. Smothering it with affection,

The more you watched the more you realized.

The casually dressed raven hair continued to cuddle the monster.




"Oh did you miss mommy? Yes, you did, yes you did! My little baby *commence cooing and baby noises*."


The now happy pet owner relaxed her grip as Chesire fell to her feet and began to speed around her, rubbing and purring all the while. Elica Mirg would give the slightest of glances at @Jin and rolls her eye.

"What are you looking at edgelord? You make me think of my old teacher when I was going through a phase. I pop edgelords first cause their reactions are funnier. Go get a life before you lose a life eh?'


After the very casually delivered threat. Everyone had gotten their tag, So it was time for the... urgh.

Exposition.

"Oh yeah. I suppose you guys need some answers? We can't have a just cause now, can we? Allow me to oblige. I've been looking for my darling kitty Chesire for some time now. He likes to get up to a bit of mischief now and then. Just like his mommy."


She rubbed her leg against him and then a wink at the camera in her head before continuing.

"This dungeon here is where he decided to hang out while mommy was busy and away. He was mad cause I left him alone, so I needed some bait. Spreading the rumor that this was a Beginners Cave sure helped. What is this dungeon? *Shrugs* Some place, doubt it's important to the game. Or not! Once there's a answer, it's not any fun anymore."


A curl of her lip as her visible eye gleamed slightly.

"When he came out to play, I thought to just come to get him but then... you all went to work and well... kyeheh. I decided to let the game play out. That's why the game exists, to be played right? What sort of game reaches the ending before it even starts? Any real gamer would agree."


She reached down and picked up her weird-ass cat. A sly, yet sincere smile to the party.

"Ahhhh, anywho! That's the story folks! So sorry to put you through all that drama! Maybe someday I will repay you for playing with kitty some. Or who knows... maybe I'm just your ex you blocked from your Metaventure friendlist way back then? No one can say but we all do love a classic, WHAT A TWIST!!! Riiiiiight? Toodles♥, enjoy your stay in wonderland."


She reached up and began to push back her hair with the back of her free hand.

"I sure intend to!"


Her hair parted.
The party was alone in the chamber.

At least it was quiet after all that screeching...

Note From Pandora: Thank you for joining this challenge! With its conclusion, the tradition of my Beginners Cave dungeons has come to an end. While I hope those had in some way acted as a tutorial for several systems in place during each season they were run, everything (including the entirety of TS someday) must come to an end eventually.

Perhaps another DM in the future will carry on the tutorial level ez as pie beginner challenges. For me, this is a new era. I hope you enjoyed it and will return to my future content with improved knowledge from your experiences.
