The head burst, an uncanny wave shuddering through the battlefield. Harlow stared, staggered, unsteadied by the shock. He was closer than most who were not captured, as he stood alongside the charging Kiryuu. The blast of magical energy ran through him, charging his Magia energy supply with less than proper fuel.
A bell chimed. A swinging door scraped against the floor. He was there, smiling, guiding. A hand raised in the distance. He was there, scribbling into a notepad. How many plates could he fit on his arm? Two, five, ten? How many customers could he remember? How many tables could he manage at once? There was no number, and some days, there was no end. Lines out the door, shouting, fighting. Pressure, heat. He spun through, dodging and ducking under obstacles, narrowly avoiding disaster each time. A cup of this, a splash of that, four more plates and six new tables. A tightrope walked overtop a ceaseless sea of sharks and snakes, hungry and ungracious. Running the café on Sunday was a hell well practiced.
This fight wasn't all that much different.
He was getting a handle on the way the enemy moved and its habits, creating space for Kiryuu and the rescuers, who worked to free the imprisoned, before the former offered to carry any from the battle. Harlow was not too wounded. He shook his head. His place was here.
Finally, with Explorers were rescued (mostly...), their ranks expanded. He'd heard tales of
@Seigi Ling Ling and
@Gwyn ap Herne. A level of recognition came naturally with great power. This meant
@Sol was rescued also. He didn't approach her. Combat didn't offer visitation time. Seeing them alive was enough to quell his well hidden worry. He admired how some unacquainted others landed on their feet.
@The Guy and
@Herculean Drakecon emerged, with the latter immediately employing their exhausting abilities to protect others. Honorable. Harlow would have to keep up.
But he hadn't the skillset to send glorious, magical shields, nor the fleetness of foot to flash to and fro. All he had was a sword and his training. With lessons learned from the real world, and those taught to him by
@Lucia Mierz, he held his ground amidst the hurricane of red fever. Not a step back. Always forward. He stood stable, when…
A bird? Time would pause, as if the world refused to interrupt such a gift. Harlow looked toward the creature, petite, resting weightlessly on his forearm. It looked up at him, eyes full of forgiveness and aspiration. A dreaming bird.
"Understood." He nodded as it cawed and burst, essence from its small shape infusing into his Magia chassis.
"Thank you." He spoke to himself, knowing not the person who had delivered him the empowerment. He would honor their offering nevertheless. Someday, he would have to thank
@Trissayne Lavelle in person.
Alongside Levi and Misha, another voice called out commands. This voice, like the others, was familiar. Eyes flicked around, finding
@Ash Vargold. Harlow watched as the beastfolk struck into one of the Kurungaar Mother's vulnerable joints, his face splattered with hideous, vile fluids from within. With their summoned spiritual aid reinforcing others around, it seemed he had few left to defend himself.
No matter. As one of the sharp legs of the corrupted monster stabbed downwards towards his temporarily blinded comrade, a clash of hard chitin on swift steel clanged, knocking the attack off course and into the ground. The heavy, muscled limb would've been difficult for Harlow redirect, if he didn't feel his arms empowered by the bird from
@Trissayne Lavelle. Not even a single pant, exhaling calmly through his nose. He sliced at the blocked leg, positioning himself between it and
@Ash Vargold.
"On your three. This is Harlow." He didn't look toward his previously met companion, eyes set upon the enemy. All the while, his mind wandered to their previous meeting. This friend had died once already, and Harlow had agreed to help keep them from dying again. He remembered the promise. He remembered their curse. It was time to fulfill his vow. No room for hesitation.

"You're not alone. Over."
