Though often mistaken for a form of mimic, the grass crab, locally known as "Wandering Wheat", is actually a form of terrestrial crustacean typically found in grasslands. They carefully cultivate a crop of native grasses on their shell, allowing them to blend in with their environment.

In recent years, they've grown increasingly common in grain fields, which are similar enough to their native habitats to let them thrive. And while they aren't particularly dangerous, their tendency to dig has led to an increase in injuries as people unexpectedly step into one of their burrows...

Endless fields of golden grain. The peaceful chirping of birds. A gentle sun, a growing rarity in the autumn season.

"Uuuugh. I can't believe this is the quest they gave me."

And of course, the whining of one Imoogi as she looked out upon the field, a black spot amidst the green and yellow.

The Adventurer's Guild had told her this was a hunting quest. Not particularly dangerous, but it still involved culling more than a few creatures, and Imoogi was always looking for a way to test out her skills. She'd imagined it'd be something bigger, or threatening. Like wolves, or giant birds, or even goblins.

Instead, according to the locals, the "Wandering Wheat" was just crab that dug holes, ate bugs, and mostly ran away when people got too close. Not particularly dangerous at all.

How disappointing! It was like the people at the guild thought she was some helpless noob.

"And I can't even use my grenades... ugh. At least it pays okay..."

She'd left the weird windmill behind, making her way back towards Finweald. A long journey, she knew, but one that she was quite happy to walk. At least, happy to walk so long as it was peaceful and gave her time to consider the events she'd gone through.

This walk, however, had ended near Finweald. Ended, because Kyra found herself staring at an individual in the middle of the road, staring into the field with a look of utter disgust upon their face - a look that made Kyra both annoyed, and curious as to why someone would be so angry at an open field.

"Uh...hey there? Something out there got your attention? Something bothering you? You look a little...uhm..."

She fell silent as she realised she had no describing words for what the woman looked like. Her eyes drifted back across the open fields, trying to find anything that might stand out against the fields that would give her some sort of insight into whatever might have concerned the traveller.

Imoogi froze a moment, then turned towards Kyra with a deadpan expression. Who was this... small purple fox-girl, and why was she chatting up random strangers? Hopefully the guild hadn't decided to assign her a party member again. Didn't they know she could handle herself?

"I'm looking for crabs."

No elaboration, no emotion. Imoogi stared a little longer, then turned back to the field of grass. Her eyesight wasn't in any way excellent, and all the tongue-flicking in the world wouldn't let her sense anything other than the taste of dirt and weeds. You were supposed to be able to see them moving by watching for the wheat to move unnaturally.

Fat lot of good that did her. It was windy, and that meant all the wheat was moving.

"...the Guild didn't send you, did they? If they were going to give me such a piss-poor job, they could at least trust me to do it on my own, sheesh..."

Probably weren't even worth taming, those crabs...

Kyra cocked her head to the left slightly, her ears twitching again as she tried to figure out what the girl was talking about.

"The...guild? I'm...not sure what guild you're talking about...but I can say that no guild sent me...at least, not that I'm aware of in any way."

She suddenly realised what the girl had said she was looking for, and felt another wave of confusion flow through her mind in response.

"Did you say...crabs? Like, multiple legged things with claws that waddle sideways rather than walking normally...? I'm not so sure you're going to find them in a field of grain...aren't they usually aquatic creatures? Which...means water? Unless there's a lake nearby that I'm not aware of, that is...which I guess could be the case, but I just thought...err..."

She gave a shrug suddenly, as she realised just how little she knew about some of the creatures of this world. It was entirely possible that there were land crabs that she knew nothing about.

"Can I...help in any way?"

Imoogi glanced backwards, red eyes widening in disbelief.

"So you aren't from the Adventurer's Guild? Don't tell me you're just... wandering around here."

She gestured broadly, and it was hard to tell if she was doing it towards the wheat fields or the entire area.

"There's nothing here but farms and old people. Absolutely terrible place to grind."

She dropped her arms with a sigh.

"Apparently they're like. Land crabs. They hide in the wheat fields and dig holes or something. It's a video game, it can have land crabs."

Imoogi shrugged. Was that a rustle in the grass...? No, just more wind. There was so much of that.

"Anyway, they're completely harmless, unless you step in one of their holes, I guess. And everyone here's too old now to kill them themselves, so they're paying Adventurers to do it."

She looked back at Kyra. She still had that flat expression - honestly, Imoogi hoped that maybe she'd decide it wasn't worth hanging around.

"...I mean, I can't stop you, I guess? But if you aren't in the guild, you won't get paid or anything. You'd just be killing crabs for free."

At least the girl was talking. Far more than Kyra had expected, too. Her tail had begun to sway a bit as the other individual explained about the land crabs - something that Kyra hadn't really considered, until they reminded her that this was a game.

"Land crabs...yeah, I guess...I guess that's a thing..."

She shrugged as the other mentioned about working for free. Getting paid wasn't high up on Kyra's list - she managed, in her own ways. The clinic had been far more profitable than she would've imagined, even though her original partner had backed out.

"I don't mind coming along, if you don't mind some company. If for no other reason than I'm curious to see what a land crab even looks like. That, and you seem...lost? I mean you were just standing in the middle of a roadway, staring out into a field...and looked like you had no idea what you were doing..."

She cocked her head, before coming back to something else the girl had stated. Something that Kyra had found weird, considering everything.

"Do you not...just wander around places? I mean, I'm not really just wandering - and not grinding, either...I'm actually just coming back from somewhere else to Finweald. I've got an apartment there that I was on my way back to, when I came across you. It's not like it's dangerous out here, or anything. No more than some other places, at least."

"I mean... no? Just wandering around would be a waste of time."

Kind of like us talking, she didn't add. Who knew how this person would react to that? Sure, people in Terrasphere had been 'nice' so far, but that could change at any moment, right? Right.

"Me, lost? Pfft. I know exactly what I'm doing!"

And as if to demonstrate that fact, Imoogi walked straight into the wheat field. At four feet tall it wasn't nearly tall enough to swallow her up the way a corn field would, but it was still enough to cling to her clothing and generally hamper her path. If Kyra wasn't a member of the guild, that meant it didn't matter if she helped - she'd still get all the reward anyway.

She walked some 10 yards into the field before stopping, and looked around at the shifting wheat... and after a minute, she noticed something shifting in the distance. A place where the wheat was taller than the rest, slowly creeping away from her.

"Hah, there you are!"

Kyra blinked as the girl simply turned and walked into the field, claiming that she knew exactly where she was going, and exactly what she was doing - neither statement something that she found herself believing in the slightest. She watched, with amusement, from the road as the girl suddenly came to a stop, exclaiming to have found what she was looking for, or at least pretending to have found it.

Giggling to herself, but overcome with curiosity, Kyra found herself following the other individual out into the field, gingerly stepping on the exact pathway that the girl had taken. She wandered through the field, her tail brushing the wheat stalks as she went without any sort of issue.

"Find something of interest over there? One of your land crabs perhaps? I'm really curious to see what they look like. That is assuming you've found, and caught one. Which, based off your exclamation...I would assume is the case?"

She stopped a few steps away from the girl, grinning like a child as she waited, her left hand sitting on the haft of her scythe casually, but clearly ready to draw it if needed. She doubted the other girl meant her any harm, but there were things hidden away in the wheat field sometimes, things that Kyra had long ago learnt to be cautious of - especially if you couldn't see it.

"Well? Come on, let's see it..."

Imoogi glared back at Kyra as she followed. Bad enough to have such a baby job without having to deal with someone who clearly didn't believe her. She held her finger up to her lips in a shushing motion before turning back to her target. She crept forward, magic muffling the sound of her footsteps as she approached...

Imoogi dived, briefly disappearing beneath the wheat. There was the brief sound of a struggle, and then she popped back out, lifting a creature above her head.

Hah, got it!

Chrrk, chrrk!

It was, in fact, a crab, one the size of a small dog. A crop of stunted wheat grew from its shell, crushed by Imoogi's scuffle. Its legs and claws waved helplessly in the air as Imoogi walked over to Kyra with a grin. Let's see this lady make fun of me now!

See? Crab.

It was, in fact, a crab. Something resembling a crab, at least. Wheat and dirt, among some other plant-like material had sprouted from its shell, causing it to appear more like a weird piece of the land that had somehow sprouted legs...and claws.

"Alright...that is definitely...well, that definitely looks like a...crab like creature..."

She cocked her head to the left, staring at the thing that the woman had found in the grass, and now had lifted above her in a display of...showing off? Kyra found a bit of amusement in the whole situation, the experience bringing a smile to her face as she suppressed a giggle in response.

"So...now that you have it, what's the plan? Cause that thing doesn't look like it would be that appealing in a soup. I doubt you could even convince someone that it's worth stewing. I mean look at that thing, it doesn't look appetizing in the slightest. Revolting, is the word I would use actually. Extremely revolting. Unappetizing, really."

She moved to the edge of the road, glancing over the fields around them. The golden crops of wheat and grains seemed to drift in the small wind that lazily flowed through the open air.

"So...these things are just in the dirt, beneath all the crops? And what...you're just...looking for them because...?"

I mean, a crab is a crab. It's worth a try, at least.

Imoogi lowered the crab out of the air, taking a moment to look it over. No pointed fangs or strange oozes. Nothing on her investigation mode that even suggested there was anything useful about the crab, at least to her. She set it on the ground, belly up, and kept it down with one foot while she looked for a large enough dart.

Weren't you listening? The job's to kill as many of these as I can. There's too many of them.

She pulled out a long spike. It was meant for larger creatures, but she'd yet to use it. Now, how was it that her mom killed crabs before cooking them...?

Maybe you think it looks gross, but I'm still gonna try eating one. Ate a bear when I started playing. It was absolutely terrible.

She placed the spike where she hoped the brain was, and leaned in. There was a crack and a spasm, and the crab stopped moving.

Nice, first try! One down, a whole bunch to go!

She winced at the thought of eating a bear. Some creatures just sounded unappealing for consumption, and well...a bear was one of those creatures. The crunching of the shell called Kyra away from her thoughts, and she saw that the original creature had been dispatched accordingly.

"Did they give you any sort of quota for how many to get rid of, or is that just...up in the air?"

She peered at the location that the other player had found the original crab, trying to see any sort of disturbances, or marks in the ground that would be telling towards how to locate these things. Not that she was by any means a hunter, but she figured that there must be at least something that would give it away for her.

"I mean, how do you know when enough have been killed off? Seems like something they would provide you. Otherwise they're just sending you on make work to...they're not just sending you on make work to get rid of you, right? You're not like an outcast, or something?"

There was no judgement in her voice as she asked, the idea had simply popped into her head and she found herself wanting to clarify. Either way, she had decided to assist the girl, moving into the fields and poking at the ground with her scythe as she went. She wasn't entirely sure what she was going to do once she did find one of the creatures, but that was a problem for-

Her trail of thought ended as a claw lashed out at her, causing a squeal to escape Kyra as she slammed the point of her scythe down into the ground. She heard a cracking sound, followed by something exhaling. Pulling her scythe up required two hands, and as she did so she found one of the crabs impaled on the blade, about a quarter of the way into it.

"Make that two..."

With another stab of her spike, Imoogi wrenched the larger claw off the crab. She looked it over, making sure it wasn't dripping too much, and then stowed it and the rest of her crab in her inventory.

It's more of a bounty than anything. The more crabs I kill and the more claws I bring, the more money I get-

And then Kyra said those words, made that suggestion that this was work to keep her out of the way. Imoogi tensed, gripping the long needle tight enough to make her hands hurt, and turned away from Kyra with a dark expression.

...so long as they pay me, it's worth it.

She stalked further into the bushes, still fuming. Calling her an outcast to her face like that! Even if she was, that just meant the world didn't understand her! And obviously this cheery fox was one of those people, who'd never felt out of place in their life...

The ground gave way suddenly beneath her foot. She topped forward, pain sparking in her twisting ankle as she vanished into the wheat. Around her, a number of crabs scuttled frantically away from the person-shaped hole where she lay.

"Ow, shit..."

The girl turned and walked away, clearly upset about something Kyra had said. The look on her face had turned dark almost immediately in response to Kyra's words, and the fox girl had to twitch her tail in frustration as she considered what she had stated. Guess she's touchy on the subject of...being given less than ideal work? Or maybe it's-

The sound of shifting dirt caught her attention, her eyes twitching in response. It wasn't much, just a soft shift in the air, but her enhanced hearing caught the sound - which was directly in the path that the other girl had just taken.

"Hey...are you okay?"

She called out as she pushed forwards into the field, eventually spotting the girl on the ground beneath her, where the soil had given underneath the other's weight. Kyra slid down beside the other, careful not to injure herself in the process as she looked her over for injuries.

"Anything hurt? Looks like you took a bit of a tumble here...nothing seems broken..."

She began running her hands down the girl's legs, cupping them and gently pressing against the skin as she tested the response from the other girl. She figured that they'd likely be okay, it wasn't a huge fall, but it was worth checking out regardless.

"You know...even if they did send you away on some pointless mission just to get rid of you...I'm glad they did, otherwise I wouldn't have met you. Which really would've been a shame."

Imoogi gritted her teeth as she pulled away from Kyra's investigation.

I'm fine. I just tripped.

There was more of a hiss in those words than she had intended, but she didn't care. She forced herself upright, leaning on one leg to hide the fact that she'd sprained her ankle on her other leg. It wasn't that bad, and she could always knock back a healing potion later.

Look, I'm just here to kill these crabs and get paid for it. I don't need your... your pity, alright?

There wasn't much hiding the limp, unfortunately, but it didn't get in the way of her stumbling towards a smaller crab. She impaled it with rather more force that was necessary before storing the whole thing in her inventory. Anything to get her mind off her frustration and the unfairness of this whole situation.

This was a game! It was fun! Or it would be, if people weren't so busy treating it like a real world with real world rules!

You want to kill them too? That's fine. But that doesn't make us friends, okay? It's just a job. A side quest, so I can rank up and get better jobs.

The girl was pulling away, both physically and emotionally. Something about the entire situation was off to Kyra, something about the reaction signifying a deeper problem. The limp was obvious, the physical injury likely only making the emotional issue worse, or perhaps just another frustration on top of other frustrations hidden deep within.

"You...hey, look. I'm not here to steal your...experience, or whatever, away from you. I'm just here, hoping to make an acquaintance, or if I'm really lucky - a new friend. That is...assuming someone is even willing to make friends. Kind of a two-way kinda thing, so I don't get to be the only one making the decision."

She stepped closer to the other girl, opening up the spirit magic lines that connected her to the other person - a soft violet coloured line that only she could see. Softly, she began muttering as she focused the healing magic on the ankle that the other girl was trying to avoid putting weight on.

"I give so willingly to you...that which I need not, so that you may walk right once more...supported on two, where one would falter..."

The soft squeal of pain that erupted from her signified the transfer of magic, the healing energies taking away from Kyra, and providing towards the other girl. Seconds after it was over, she smiled at the other girl, a slightly tired look on her face.

"There...that should be better...at least a little bit...I hope that you can see, eventually, that I'm just here to help...nothing more, just...help."

Another soft smile as she waited to see how the girl would respond, her tail swaying behind her softly.

Imoogi couldn't help but continue to bristle. The way Kyra was talking reminded her too much of forced meetings with school counselors trying to understand her. To fix her, as if she were something broken, and that with enough prying and prodding they could bring back the "proper student" she'd left behind.

Goddamnit, Terrasphere was supposed to be an escape from those kind of people!

As the healing magic worked its way through her ankle, she almost wanted to try and push it away - but she couldn't actually do that, and the sudden reduction of paint was an undeniable relief. She tested it a few times, then turned away so Kyra couldn't see her face.

...thanks.

Now that the hunt was truly underway, the field was alive with their frantic chirping and scuttling. Imoogi tucked her spike under her arm as she a vial off her belt filled with unpleasantly green liquid. She knocked half of it back, then began dipping her darts into the rest.

...You don't have anything to like shoot these things with, right? Cool scythe, but if you start reaping the wheat it's gonna cut the pay.

Kyra actually laughed aloud at the commentary from the other girl. She hadn't considered the irony of being in a field of wheat, wielding a scythe, of all things. Now that she saw it though, she couldn't help but laugh at the whole image - so counter-intuitive to what she had been going for.

"Well, I was going for a Reaper image, but...it was meant more to be a Grim Reaper, rather than a Wheat Reaper. Guess that didn't work though."

She looked at the few scurrying crabs nearby, trying to escape the sudden daylight and return to the cold, dark depths of the underground. She couldn't help but feel a moment of pity for the small creatures, before deciding that it was easier to ignore that feeling inside herself. It would make the job that much harder, and it wouldn't help them - if she didn't kill them, then the other girl likely would.

"Well...I've got something new I can try, which I've never done before...no idea if it will work or not though..."

She closed her eyes and took in a deep breath, calming herself as she prepared for the burst of energy she'd need for this spell. She'd only tested it twice before, and both times it had been...well, electrifying. She'd yet to test it on a target, however. Opening her eyes she gave a harsh snap of her tail, causing three bolts of lightning to appear and flash across the sky towards the crabs. Almost immediately, four of them exploded as the bolts hit and ricocheted into the nearby companions. Another three roasted upon impact as the bolts hit them and came to a stop.

"Oh...oh wow that went better than expected. I've never done that before!"

"If you want to be grim, you should really ditch the perky purple aesthetic," Imoogi scoffed, crossing her arms as she went back to looking for crabs. The longer it took, the more they scattered. There were holes in the previously flawless field of wheat where they'd frantically burrowed into the ground. "Grim reapers are like... black robes and bandages and skulls.

She wasn't watching as Kyra began to prepare her spell. Imoogi was new, and magic wasn't a major part of her kit. There was only the briefest taste of ozone as she flicked her tongue to warn her before lighting split the sky and streaked between crabs. "Holy shit, what-"

She approached the closest victim. What was once a grass-covered crab was now a blackened shell. It was a wonder it wasn't on fire. "Damn, why didn't you start with that? Can't believe you were holding out on me."

There was a note of jealously in her voice. She couldn't do anything as cool as that, and she'd yet to figure out how to do that sort of magic. If only she didn't have to worry about poisoning the plants, or else she could do something cool in return.

"Guess I'll just. Pick these up," she muttered, and then began to pick her way through the uneven terrain, tossing crabs roughly into a pile in the field.

Kyra wavered on her feet as the magic rushed through, and out of her. It was always a lot to expend energy in those amounts, leaving her less than comfortable once it had left her body. She grinned at the other girl, pausing for a few breaths as she tried to steady herself.

Is that grim enough for you? I didn't start with it...because I've never really done it before...and I wasn't sure how much it would drain from me. And...from the feel of it, that took out a lot. I can maybe do it again in...a little bit, if you're still interested. Unless you think running around and...stabbing the ground will do you any better.

She was still slightly winded, and for a second she was worried the spell had backfired somehow. A quick glance over herself though, confirmed that she was physically okay, just drained. Oof...good thing I tested that on something minimal like this. Would be bad to learn that in a severely dangerous situation...maybe I should practice these things more, before I need them...

As to the whole dark robes and everything...not every iteration of the reaper has that description. That's just a...societal norm now. And what media made popular, so it became...well, that. How many more of these did you want?

She was already recovering, her breathing coming more steady the more she spoke - which was a good sign. She figured she could probably pop off a slightly smaller version of the spell, given a few more minutes to recover.
