"Ahem, ahem? Test. Test. Can you listen to me?"

It wasn't like you could respond, so—

"You can't..? Hmm... Well, anyways. For peace of mind! According to our research, the surface is still relatively safe compared to the depth of the labyrinth, buuuuuuuut you are starting to get into the territory where many of our magitech robots were destroyed while collecting data..."

There was a pause.

"And I know this is all a simulation and all, but like... Try to not die? I guess..? No one has ever actually died in a simulation before, and I'm assuming nothing bad will happen, but after TS being TS, I would be a little cautious, okay? Okay. Good luck!"

Once again, it was only you, your comrades, and the labyrinth...

Cycle 1
Location: Labyrinth's Simulacrum - Higher Levels
Time & Weather: ???

The maze part of the labyrinth was long gone by now, but it didn't make things any less disorienting. The meticulously crafted ambient with sharp curves to no particular direction were now replaced by an open cave that a resemblance of something more natural and organic, but still had chunks of structures that made it look like ruins.

Broken pillars, stairs that were sculpted on the rocky ground, torch holders and broken floorings all indicated that something existed in there.

But what truly confirmed it was the terrible smell that suddenly invaded your nostrils. No, it wasn't your teammate that has just farted or anything. It was something much more... Deathly?

"..."

Someone that was aware enough probably would catch a glimpse of a face, camouflaged between the rocks. It was startling, like suddenly spotting a snake that has always been there, but you have never noticed.

The instinct is to warn everyone, but suddenly, a large beast charges in.

"Grrreeek!"

The vanguard barely manage to defend themselves, and the rearguard, ready to counter attack and maybe cover the vanguard, was suddenly targetted by a volley of javelins.

"Ke ke ke ke ke!"

More of these creatures appeared, and they seemed to be enjoying themselves with that ambush... Yet, as if things couldn't get worse, heavy steps followed, and a much larger one appeared.

"Hrrrhmm..."

It clasped its large club on its hand, gripping it tightly and showing a demoniac smile while its lackeys continued to attack you.

Attention! DP Mechanic!

SP is no longer a thing. Whenever you use Hinder, Disrupt, or anything that would usually deal SP damage, it nows generates DP (Disruption Points) instead.

For THIS PLAYTEST we will have the following approach:

When you generate DP with any Action, you may immediately spend it in your turn to cause a DP effect. Any DP leftover that you don't spend will be added into the Team's DP pool. Anyone may use the Team's DP pool to trigger the DP effects, and they can even, during a turn they are rolling DP, use the Team's DP pool to complement their roll.

The Team's DP can't be converted into damage via Alter Hinder. The Team's DP only expires at the end of the Encounter.

As she entered the simulation for the purpose of testing, Lune landed on the surface just outside of the labyrinth, looking around to check her comrades before spotting a familiar armored dead blonde. "Wait," She asked, "How are you here? Can everyone see you?"

"How should I know? Maybe the simulation?"
Not only had they been split into two separate people, but it seemed that Lune lost her Steel Auxesis in the process too. That's gonna be rough for frontlining. "I am somehow a physical being here, that's all I noticed." Too many questions, and no time for answers. They proceeded into the labyrinth.

Once inside, they were not ready for the dinosaur-looking-lizard-people ambush outta nowhere. "We're surrounded." The enemies are too many, and they don't look like pushovers, either. "Anything we can use against them?" Lune asked the shieldmaiden that used to only linger inside her mid.

The blonde dashed to the side, "I'll check, you go support the others." Taking her unusual position in the backline, the woman sighed. "Alright, prepare for battle." She turned towards her allies, beginning to recite her Harmonic Magic to imbue them with uplifting power.

Vulnerable from Ultra Hinder

"Y’know, it would’ve been nice if their comms worked both ways." A heavy sigh accompanied her words as they listened to the provided information, her gaze trailing over the subterranean structure they were currently exploring. Apparently it’d been a labyrinth at one point, though little remained of its original maze to serve as an obstacle for the players.

"I wonder if it broke down over time… or if something decided to opt for an open concept." The ranger crouched by some of the broken ruins, inspecting the chunks of debris carefully before her gaze turned towards Lune. "Whatcha think—" Words cut off abruptly as she spotted two figures instead, one of which the elf hadn’t met for the longest of times—and never outside of the woman’s dreams. "’sup Freya, been a while~"

A waved greeting was given to the blonde, before the corner of her eyes barely caught an unexpected movement in the background. Curiosity got the best of her as Lúthien’s attention turned towards that spot instead, her eyes narrowed as they tried to fight the darkness that surrounded them. "I could’ve sworn something was there a second ago…"

Perhaps she’d simply imagined it, though the unexpected stench that assaulted her nose next was definitely real. "Eww... what is that?!" A hand quickly rose to pinch her nose, her ruby gaze unconsciously shifting towards Fiora as the elf spoke.

They would get a proper answer moments after as the ambush was finally revealed, lizards of varying sizes and builds now cropping out of their hiding places as they zeroed in on the adventurers. The familiar voice of Lune rang out as the woman imbued some of their allies with her own strength, just as two arrows found themselves nocked back onto her bow. "I’ll create a distraction for you guys!"

Crystals began to grow and swallow the steelheads as the temperature where Lúthien stood dropped considerably, and a thin trail of frost marked their flight path as the arrows whizzed towards her chosen target—one of the two large beasts at the forefront. A flurry of snow and icicles exploded around them when the arrows impacted against the brute, the smaller particles clinging to their eyes and nostrils while the sharper pieces managed to nick and slice tender folds of skin.

A strange place, a simulation within a simulation. Mizuki didn't know what to make of it, but tried to keep her focus on the task ahead of them as they made their way deeper into the labyrinth. The path before them was less twisty than the ones they'd just left behind, the strange landscape forming into something akin to a ravine, with ruins indicating that at some point in the past somebody had lived there... or the remnants of their structures had been brought here somehow.

That said, there was something she couldn't just ignore.

Wait, Corvella?

A familiar face she thought she'd never see again. Not close enough an acquaintance to be called a friend, maybe, but still someone Mizuki had internally paid respects to when she'd heard that the human had been one of the casualties of the original assault upon Vintergard by the distorted magia, even if her end had been more heroic than most whose lives were lost then.

Yet here she was, apparently in the flesh rather than the stone her large petrified form outside the city was made out of. The wildling looked at Corvella with open confusion, speaking without thinking.

Didn't you get turned to stone four years ago?

Some, perhaps, might find it absurd to even consider the possibility of a player meeting such a fate inside a game, but given that this "game" had already successfully trapped many people inside of it Mizuki didn't think there was much point to questioning reality.

Of course, that reality was now getting questioned by the fact that Corvella was here. Getting petrified would, logically speaking, be a fairly permanent affair: fossils didn't suddenly return to life either.

Of course, it's good to see you again, but...

Well, she'd already asked the question. No point in repeating it. Corvella would answer the caenis's curiosity on her own terms. For now they had to keep their attention primarily on the labyrinth.

Sniffing their surroundings Mizuki's sharp nose suddenly became exposed to a new scent, one which made her wish it hadn't. Foul was an understatement: if she wasn't used to smelling all kinds of things these days she'd probably have fought the urge to vomit. But once she'd gotten accustomed to the smell of rotting meat her stomach had become much more resistant, so instead the wolfling just growled as she shifted to a quadruped stance.

Even for lizards that's a vile odour. I'm guessing this labyrinth isn't kind to its inhabitants either.

As she spoke her form changed slightly, preparing herself for the inevitable confrontation once the lizards revealed themselves. As the large brutes charged in Mizuki jumped backwards to avoid getting hit, her clawed paws scratching the dark stone before she pressed harder and secured her position.

Be careful of the edges. Let's whittle down their numbers first: they'd get in the way if we tried to take down the big ones.

With instructions practically barked out, Mizuki dashed forward and to the side, focusing on one of the javelin throwers. As she approached the lizard she used her Primal Aura to release a threatening impression, quickly followed by her tail stretching out and lashing forward like a whip to try and pull the troglodyte's legs out from underneath it.

Nemesis[1]: Troglodyte Brute [F5]

The explanation of exactly what they were doing had gone over Imoogi's head. All that really mattered was that it was a dungeon with things to kill. It was disappointing that they weren't real, and therefore all the risk was taken out of the whole thing, but it also meant the AG couldn't complain about her getting into things that were "too dangerous".

She flicked her tongue out as they entered the labyrinth and regretted it immediately. She covered her mouth with a scowl, trying to clear out the foul taste in her mouth. "Ugh! They didn't tell me this place would smell so bad."

And then the source of the smell revealed itself. A bunch of... lizardmen? Fishmen? Whatever they were, they were ugly, and that obviously made them a target. Imoogi grinned, then pulled a few potions from her inventory.

"Now this is more like it! FIRE IN THE HOLE!"

She stepped forward and tossed her grenade towards one of the hulking brutes. It exploded on contact, creating a concussive blast strong enough to knock the lighter enemies around.

Unfortunately for her, the simulation within a simulation couldn't simulate her an extra eye. Fortunately, it simulated her 'companions' just fine. Sadly, their numbers wouldn't be an advantage, given their advance would be compromised by even greater numbers as they were all but ambushed.

Dropping her torch forth for some extra visibility, Fiora lifted her gauntlets, balling her hands into fists, effectively switching them to knuckle sandwich delivery mode. Far from perfect given their circumstances, but it should deal the trick when it came to helping out her companions deal with the rabble.

As per usual, @Luthien was spearheading herself into another sudden death by being the first one to step forth, which meant she had to be there to effectively cancel out the tan-skinned goblin's bombastic approach, pushing forth an extra mile to deliver the knuckle sandwiches that, thanks to being protected by thick leather and metal, meant this was more akin to an upgraded knuckle sandwich, metal edition.

An herculean pain train for the Brute's face to be assaulted with, forcing the brute to go into the defense, despite not moving an inch. Enough time to at least warn the blonde without breaking eye-contact with the beast.

"Try not to die again, or at least make it easier for me to keep that from happening."

"Keeeeeeeeeeeaaaauuu!!!"

The scream of the troglodyte fainted as it fell, being thrown away by the explosion caused by @Imoogi. Meanwhile, the brute that took the bulk of the explosion staggered, losing its footing and glaring at its half destroyed arm, that it has used to defend itself from the lethality of the explosion.

@Luthien's distraction worked well, giving room for @Madison Freebird and @Fiora Di Angelo to attack the enemies while the latter protected her.

The marked and severely wounded brute growled at its enemies, charging in and trying to pounce the black haired woman, while the other brute charged to the green haired elf, lifting her off the ground in a charge and forcing her toward the hunters that lunged, attacking not only her, but the rest of the group with their spears.

@Ueno Mizuki fought some of the hunters off, with her attacks empowered by @Lune's harmonic magic. The creatures couldn't find their way past the defenses, but they had plans...

The counter attack continued, and the hunters quickly spun their polearms, some with long slashes to try to cut as many of their enemies as possible. All of this while the scouts watched from afar, repositioning and throwing javelins that were extremely precise, despite the crude and primitive behavior of those stinking beasts.

And of course... The big boss was approaching slowly, analyzing the battlefield and its future targets...

The brute proved to be packing more muscle than expected as she felt her feet dangle on the air with her body lifted entirely off the ground, her arms anchoring to it's wrists as she begun to push and push, slowly giving herself some leverage on the colossi until the tip of the spears rammed through the steel plate and cloak alike. The only good fortune she could take from this predicament, despite how painful it was, is that she was grounded yet again.

That, and the fact that being hit from several directions all at once naturally pissed her the fuck off despite being technically not real in the first place. But the same could be said whenever anything sucker punches her on Terrasphere as a whole. 'Not real' but it sucks.

Enough for her to strike back twice as hard, flames branding her knuckles on the brute's torso, pulling from his arm to switch places with it and instead take aim for the one scalie with spear she wanted to focus her attention the most, going for a cheap punch under the belt to let him (or her?) feel true agony and give herself an opening.

One to charge up a thunderous storm around her, flames erupting from her center of mass and spreading all over like a wave of heat, targetting the slick, ugly bastards they had for adversaries and setting them ablaze.

"Now's a good time for you to play reckless, blonde."

"Fio…?" Time had yet to med the riff between them, so the ranger couldn’t help the look of surprise when the greenette stepped between the colossal brute and her. Fiora’s off-handed comment as she served the lizard a clean serving of knuckle sandwich almost reminded the blonde of the good ol’ days between them, but she had little time to ponder over it as the troglodytes swarmed their small party.

"I-Is everyone alright?" Part of her wasn’t sure if to praise or admonish the brunette that had hooked them all to this simulation, the pain that accompanied their inflicted wounds making it easy to forget that none of the things here were real. A quick glance around them confirmed most of the party members looked to be in a similar status as her own, but her concern lied on seeing how many of the reptilians had begun to surround them… with their scouts not far behind.

"Now's a good time for you to play reckless, blonde."
"Man, you’re quite the slave driver Fio~"

Not only had the greenette warned her to avoid an untimely death, but she also expected the ranger to follow up the infernal display that she'd gifted them? She’s quick to spot the youngest of their party whose flashy explosions caused one of the lizardmen to fall off the edge, before she pointed towards the two far-off scouts that had taken aim against them. "Hey Imoogi, think you can take care of our two ‘friends’ back there?"

The hellfire that Fiora unleashed around the lizards proved to be a reliable distraction as she stepped back, and by the time the flames died down two well aimed arrows whizzed through the air. The first narrowly dodged the tank of their party to embed itself clean into the armor of the troglodyte, before a flurry of ice burst forth to envelop the creature and those around it.

The second however strayed sharply towards the left, landing right in the middle of two lizardmen before remaining still and unmoving as the seconds passed—perhaps it’d been nothing more than a dud this time around? Lúthien waited until curiosity had gotten the best of them before she unleashed the dormant energy, the sound of crystal grinding against crystal echoing through the ruins as stalagmites of ice rapidly erupted from the ground and knocked the two reptilians towards the ledge their companion had previously disappeared into.

"Oh, hello, Mizuki." A small wave and smile was her response to the name of the dead being uttered.

"Didn't you get turned to stone four years ago?"

"I think it's closer to around two, or three years ago?"
The blonde pondered, losing track of the exact timeline before pointing toward the caenis. "Hard to explain, but just think of it as a 'ghost in the machine' situation or a simulated copy. Dead people don't come back."

As they walked, Lune looked at the two, wondering if the blonde told Mizuki the things she told Hanno or not. Hope that it doesn't make things more confusing.

And of course during all the chaos of the ambush, they quickly got surrounded. Luckily, the snakegirl whom she hadn't seen for a while prepared a grenade that quickly sent one lizardman plummeting into the abyss below. "Oof," She reacted, looking down.

The number of the enemy was proven to be the most difficult part so far, with some staying back to provide cover fire and one of the enemy already got behind them to deal some damage. "Behind us!" Lune focused on her animancy magic, trying to create a link from herself to the others to share the physical regenerative power.

"Focus on the frontline, I got them."
She ordered the blonde shieldmaiden, who in turn readied to Mizuki's side, her shield materialized out of thin air. "Covering you, let's go."

You say that, but most of us need to die at least three times before we stop coming back.

The ease with which Corvella declared herself to not be truly present was intriguing to Mizuki: most people seemed to be insistent on being real while Terrasphere was "fake". Whether Corvella was correct in her assumption or not, her current iteration seemed to have an easy time accepting reality as it occurred to her, rather than according to her own presumptions.

Regardless, real or not, it's good to see you again.

They might not have been close, but from what Mizuki remembered Corvella had been steadfast when the chips were down, which meant that her presence was a boost to Mizuki's morale, even if she was the only one to remember the original from which this ghost(?) originated.

They didn't have the time to reminiscence. Mizuki could talk and fight at the same time, but she still had to deal with a javelin cutting into her arm and a spear threatening to slice open her spine were it not for her quick reflexes reducing the attack to a shallow slice. Her body smoothly reshaped itself as she lashed out at the nearby hunters, forcing them to remain on guard.

Flames caught her attention even as the reptilian hunters were distracted by the same heat. @Fiora Di Angelo was drawing a lot of attention to herself as flames erupted from her body. Seeing an opportunity Mizuki dashed forward, straight towards the big brute that the green-haired elf was tangling with.

The lizard was too busy fending off the flames to notice the wildling's plan until it was too late. Strengthening her legs Mizuki jumped up, clawed fingers digging into the scaled flesh of her prey as she opened her mouth and revealed sharp fangs. Even the brute's tough skin couldn't resist her powerful jaws, the taste of reptilian flesh and blood filling Mizuki's mouth before she clenched her mouth shut and ripped a chunk out of the brute's neck.

Having inflicted what was most likely a fatal injury she pushed herself away, once she landed on the ground dashing between the lizards to rejoin the rest of the expedition.

Not much better than the smell.

Wasn't that elf one of the people who didn't know how to win a boss fight...?

Well, it didn't matter here, because she had just been shot, and she wasn't going to let these stinking lizards get away with that!

"Didn't need to ask, blondie!"

Imoogi stepped forward, ignoring the fact that she was stepping towards the boss. Another grenade went flying, this time towards the enemies to the south. Their camouflage made it hard to aim at them, but explosions didn't care about aim in the end. Another concussive blast sent one scout crashing into the one behind it, and both of them careening into the abyss.

"Easy! Now then..."

She brushed the gunpowder off her hands, then turned her attention towards the massive creature slowly approaching. Now, what was this thing's deal...?

"Keeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee!!!"

More and more troglodytes were knocked away, falling for their deaths in the sides of the cave.

The ones that remained didn't take it well, ferociously retaliating while the big boss approached, now having a good idea of what its new enemies were made of.

The remaining Hunters slashed their polearms to try and wound as many of their enemies as possible, though @Lune and @Imoogi were the main targets, the former as one of the Hunters invaded the rearguard of the group, and the latter while the severely wounded Hunter tried to open space for the rest of the troglodytes to approach.

Meanwhile, the Brute that seemed to be at the verge of death roared in rage, using the last remains of its strength to retaliate against @Fiora Di Angelo, tackling the elf and trying to bring her down by force moments before its body felt weaker, and eventually crashing against the ground.

This opened the way for the Alpha to approach, not wasting a second to snatch a large rock with one of its hands and throwing fiercely at @Luthien before gripping its club tightly to swing and try to slam it against @Ueno Mizuki with all its might. A sharp gaze then locked on @Lune's while the air around her felt even more disgusting and scarce than before.

The smaller troglodytes then advanced, showering the group of adventurers with javelins and stones thrown through slings.

The chorus of screaming lizards as they were yeeted into the void was a symphony to her ears, a wide grin on her face as she took in the havoc the young snake girl and herself had caused to their ranks. "Good job, Imoogi—fuck!!!" Her cheers were interrupted when a boulder came hurling in Lúthien’s direction, the ranger narrowly diving out of its path before watching as the large rock collided against part of the ruins behind her and crumbled into smaller pieces.

"What a stinky asshole—oww!" The crudely made javelin found its mark as it collided with the back of the ranger, its stone tip managing to slice through part of her leather vest to sink into her flesh, before being pelted by a shower of smaller rocks as the hunter besides her swirled their sling around.

She gritted her teeth as a hand pulled the pike out of her armor, a muffled whimper escaping as it was finally dislodged before being thrown aside. One look at her companions showed that they were all faring similarly to herself and, despite thinning the reptilian ranks rapidly, it wouldn’t be long before the lizards overwhelmed them if they all remained on the offensive.

"Unnie, focus on Mizuki." It didn’t take a pair of perceptive eyes to see the caenis was currently struggling the most out of them all, especially with the massive lizard that towered over her. "I'll get the others."

With her decision made the ranger shifted her weapon into its violin form. The gentle strokes of the bow hairs against the instrument’s strings generating a melody echoing that through the cavern, soothing their bruises and honing their senses.

The slam of the Alpha sent the heroine backward, the blow went through her defense and probably dealt significant damage to Mizuki. "There's only so much I can do as a simulation." Her strength was comparable to her newbie days, so she couldn't do much.

Quickly recovered, she ran back to the caenis and offered a hand to help her. "Don't worry, I got you."

"Uh, it seems they are starting to target me."
Meanwhile, Lune reminded the others, as the Troglodytes probably had figured out that she was the sole healer in the group because she didn't look like one. "Can't channel in this kind of situation. Clear them for me."

Among the chaos, Luthien quickly pointed out that the woman on the frontline was having difficulty, even with a certain blonde shielder on her side. "Yeah, I see her."

Suddenly, she felt a pressure, some kind of intent, focused toward her. Lune turned towards the perpetrator.

"What? You think you're scary, staring me down like that?" She scoffed at the big, stinky one that was trying to hinder her from helping Mizuki. Alas, Lune didn't even pay him the slightest attention and just focused on the beastfolk, reaching toward her from a distance while making a gripping motion with her right hand, sending her lifeforce to quickly regenerate Mizuki's wound in an instant.

Even with Corvella watching her back, the might of the Troglodyte Alpha was not something to take lightly. Mizuki, more focused on the brute she'd just delivered the killing blow on, reacted too slowly and paid the price. The impact of the boss's giant club against her body knocked all the air out of her body, her bones creaking as the wildling was knocked down. Her vision swam as she gasped for air, her focus returning when the simulated heroine returned and offered her a hand.

Much obliged.

Taking Corvella's hand Mizuki regained her footing, inhaling and exhaling before shaking her head and dropping back on all fours.

Same as before: let's take care of the small ones first.

The big one, the boss, clearly was demanding their attention, but Mizuki wasn't going to let him dictate their movements. Answering Lune's healing with a burst of gratitude through her Primal Aura the wildling turned her attention towards the Troglodyte Hunter in their midst, who was so freely swinging his weapon around and making himself a nuisance.

She'd take care of that one, and rely on the others to take care of the other hunter who already looked like he was halfway into the grave.

Deliberately turning away from the boss Mizuki pounced at the hunter, her face twisted into a predatory snarl before her entire body shimmered and shifted, skin and fur replaced by scale and bark. A mass of serpentine roots fell upon the troglodyte, wrapping around his torso and limbs with sharp thorns digging through his scales into the soft flesh beneath, anchoring the bindings and allowing them to feed on the reptile's filthy blood.

Once the bulk of the entangling mass had passed the troglodyte's body it reformed into Mizuki, one of her arms still attached to the roots wrapped around her prey. Digging her hind paws into the ground she gritted her teeth, muscles tensing as she swung the hunter around once before her quarry detached from her arm and her hand reformed itself.

The reptile, bindings and all, was left to sail through the air. Within moments his flight had passed over the ravines that guarded the edges of the battlefield, and after that he disappeared from sight as he joined several of his kin into the limitless depths below.

The brute couldn't just go down, no. It had to last long enough to get her off-balance and die on top of her. An annoyance, yes, and it could be worse? For sure, but the fact remains that a big corpse is now weighing her down.

With little leverage in her favour, pushing the brute to the side proved far more difficult than expected. On the plus, it meant she had gone completely unseen for a few extra seconds, enough for her to pick up her cloak to use as a weapon against the one asshole closest to eating fists.

First, distract target by throwing the cloak on his ugly face.

Then, sucker punch it once to knock it's fangs and life out of it. A simple but efficient one-two that brought down the last remaining hunter that somehow pushed through with grit alone.

"I'm going in, make use of that opening." She called out to the group, given Fiora was about to draw the ire of more than one oversized lizard by darting around the reeking giant to reach the rearguard, her fist heating up as the orange hue within it turned yellow, then white, and finally bursted into a blaze. "I'm gonna need a medic after this one-"

She may not be able to see most of them, but it doesn't matter for her, not when her fist meets the ground, forcing the earth to tremor all around the elf.

There was no dancing away from the hunters swinging at Imoogi. She hissed in pain as the wounds they left provided a path for her growing chemical miasma to aggravate the wounds.

Now this... this was how the game was supposed to be played!

She flicked her tongue out in the fact of the reeking alpha. A horrible taste, for sure. "Too bad this isn't real. I bet you'd have some great reagents."

She pulled out a new flask, this one from her inventory. Pine oil wasn't something she normally used as a weapon, but this monster clearly didn't know what a bath was. And soap wouldn't be enough.

The pine oil mixed with explosives, of course.

Imoogi chucked the bottle at the alpha's feet, where it burst into a cloud of glass shards and aggressively pine-scented mist. As close as she was, she couldn't escape the cloud herself, and she pulled away from the Alpha hacking and trying to spit the flavor out of her mouth.
