Unfolding the Unknown
Descending, Wise eventually reached the grounds with caution. Even if a peaceful approach was taken so far, the tension between the harpies were clear. At the very least, half of them were skeptical, and the other half was stressed and cautious enough to sparkle a strong reaction at the first sight of hostility.

When @Ueno Mizuki pointed to Meek and ordered Diego down, the harpy shuddered, following Wise's fashion and descending.

As they finally reached a safe distance, Wise gently placed Luna back to her feet, but she didn't rush to the side of her allies yet, waiting for Diego to be placed down in a much less careful way, somewhat stumbling as he was already trying to squirm out of Meek's grasp.

"A-Ah! Don't be so hasty!"

"D-Diego! Are you okay? Can you stand?"

Luna asked, watching the boy nearly going face first on the ground, and offering him a hand to stand.

"Tch- Yeah, I am... Come on, let's get outta here-"

Diego said, looking up at the teary-eyed caenis girl and taking her help to stand, urging her to move away from the harpies, with the girl being quick to approach @Lune.

"I am... Th-Thank you..."

As she answered, the songstress and @Luthien's magic surrounded the two of them, and Diego's gaze turned to the elf and to @Ueno Mizuki's.

"Gosh, I thought we were goners. That harpy was annoying me... Thanks for the warn, Mizuki, and for the heal, Luthien!" He smirked, casting a glance at Luna. "Ah, here you go."

He tucked his hand into his pocket, pulling out a small handkerchief to offer her. The girl looked at it, sniffing and smiling while taking it, wiping her tears and eventually blowing her nose on it.

"Th-Thanks, I really needed that-"

She looked at Diego with a grateful expression, offering the handkerchief back.

"... Y-Yeah... You are welcome. Erhm, you can keep it."

Meanwhile, Deadpan took flight to her friend, as soon as the elf had sent a healing on her. The harpy was far from being able to move by herself, but just the fact she was awake was plenty of relief.

"Nnngh... Huh..? Sharpy... I'm not feeling very well..." She spoke groggily.

"It is because you slept too much, sleephead." She reassured the Cheerful harpy, glancing at @Luthien and mouthing a quiet "Thank you."

A strong grunt slipped, and the large harpy finally managed to get back to the higher ground, reaping away the restraints from her wings, that couldn't flap strongly enough to take flight.

"DAMN IT, I WANTED A BIT MORE OF FIGHT-" She huffed and lammented.

Meanwhile, Vicious blinked surprised, seeing @Yugam offering a heal and a hand, hesitating for a moment but eventually taking a grasp of his forearm with her claw.

"Maybe you shouldn't have fallen like that, if you didn't wanted more fight, my darling..." She giggled, then glancing aside to another sister. "Ara~ What's this? Is my cutie being courted by a gentleman?"

She teased her sister.

"HEY! Piss off, bitch-" She hissed, with her claw grasped around Yugam's forearm as she used it to stand, fluttering her wings, averting her eyes. "Don't get her wrong, she is just being an idiot!" Vicious insisted, with feathers perked up. "... It was a nice fight though, Sinner."

With her compliment, she squeezed Yugam's arm a bit before finally letting it go. It was a handshake? Foot-handshake? Clawshake? Only god knew that... That, and whatever reason was that she was flustered.

"Leave your hunger for the foreign pack... At least now we know who to hunt down so we can finally go back to our home... For now, it is another fruit dinner."

A collective 'aww' echoed, except for one relieved harpy:

"Yes!"

Meek chirped, and a few harpies glanced at her, making her shudder and curl before she was nudged to fly on, along with the flock that began hurrying away from the area, though Wise stayed behind for a bit longer, glancing at @Yugam and @Ueno Mizuki.

"The Keeper... Or the Moon Keeper. He is a kindhearted soul. A fair one. He have helped me... us before." She admitted, tapping her claws on the ground. "You looking for rocks makes sense for you to be looking for him. You want the blessed stones, right..? Your sharp-eared friend has one, but the child's a blessed one... Now I understand why you are going through all this work."

Her gaze then fell on the wolf woman.

"We won't get on your way any longer. I do hope to find them before you, however." Wise said. "At least the Alpha. We must have him." Her words were firm.

After responding, Wise fluttered her wings, taking flight with a brief grateful gaze and hoot to the group before disappearing through the horizon with her sisters...

"Auntieeee! If picking up rocks is that fun, why do we never do it?!" The girl protested.

"My dear, these adventures are done by brave and strong heroes. It isn't something that simple... Besides, we do not have harpies or steep mountains around here." She gestured around.

"But we have monsters!" The girl perked up

"We do..?" She questioned.

"Yes, look!" Listener exclaimed.

With an eager nod, the girl shifted aside, reaching for a snow-white furred creature, with large ears and an intense crimson-eyes gaze. Its nose twitched, desiring to smell every bit of sensorial stimuli it could grasp, while it tilted its head, half opening its mouth to reveal a pair of fierce frontal fangs.

"Oh, of course. The terrible monster. Oryctolagus cuniculus. Domesticus even, for extra horror." She poked fun at her nephew.

"Heeeey!" Listener squished the rabbit in her arms, pouting.

"Ahahaha- Now now... Let's continue... There is still way too much adventure awaiting-" She said, continuing the tale- "Step after step, the group made their way up to the path... From there and on, the travel turned to be more peaceful... But after such a strenuous fight, the group was slowly becoming tired, and the nightsky above was setting down for a rest..."

HYLANDS ASCENT - TRANQUIL FALLS PATH
Nightime
Weather: Partly Cloudy and Chilly

A quiet and soothing night washed over the greens and the lands, and it was no different for the group of explorers that were faring across the Hylands. Stars and moon do what they can to lit up your path, but eventually it was clear... You needed to halt your travel and leave it for the following day, taking the very small bit of light remaining to snatch the materials and the tools you had to create a small campsite so they could rest.

There was a need to log out to eat and do other necessities as well, for those that still had to do it.

As you prepared everything, the moon finally rose, and it watched over those that showed respect for her lands... And for that, she wrapped the ones that cared with a care of her own...

❰ Uene's Blessing is Activated ❱

Those who prayed to her, rolls Checks and Saves with Advantage

Nearing a good spot, Luna looked up at the skies, and with her gaze set by the moon, her hands locked together and a prayer was muttered in a language one couldn't understand... The moonstone that hanged by her necklace shone with divine touch, and the moonlight that bathed the wounded soothed their pain.

Diego casted a glance at Luna's necklace, watching it and the girl's actions with curiosity, waiting until she was done to meddle-

"That necklace is really cool... But it is even cooler that you can use it just like that." Diego said, tapping his foot. "Is it the necklace that lets you do it, or is it some kind of magic foci?"

The sudden questioning caught the girl off guard, and she paused, sheepish at the compliment, but uncertain at her own following words-

"I... Am not sure." She shook her head. "I've felt closer to Uene when the Keeper gave this to me... So maybe this does help me with her blessings." A warm and cheerful smile crossed her lips. "But the Keeper told me that he would only ever give the moonstones for those that are worth it. So maybe... Maybe it is a bit of both? A catalyst for the blessing, but also a reminder of how much they care... So I should care too, right?"

"I see! So it is like... uh... A virtuous circle!" Diego perked a finger up.

It took a moment for Luna to realize Diego had said 'virtuous' rather than 'vicious', and as soon as she did, her frown dissipated and she nodded, fidgeting her fingers on the gem of her necklace.

"Y-Yeah... A virtuous one..." Her expression softened.

"That's great. I hope I can make a lot of virtuous circles with my moonstone, just like you do, Luna. You should show me how you do it when we are done with this expedition!" Diego chirped, leaning in. "And maybe introduce me a little more to this Keeper-guy, he sounds like a chad."

"A-A chad... What is... Uh-" Her eyes turned puzzled for a moment, but soon she shook it off, reminding herself this was probably a typical Traveler talk. "He is a good person. I... I can help you, with your moonstone when you have it for sure." Luna said with a grin that grew a bit wider than the usual.

Diego laughed a bit at Luna's confusion, soon averting his eyes to @Fiora Di Angelo.

"You too, Green Devil. You need to teach me how to toss a bird twice my size down a mountain." Diego requested, gesturing at himself. "As you can see, I'm pretty small, so helping me to throw things twice my size around would be helpful- Maybe you can even teach Luna too, right, Luna? We can even be Wrestling Champions!" The boy called, tugging the girl with an arm wrapping around her shoulder and striking a pose with her.

"H-Huh? Me?!" Her tail swayed around, with ears twitching as she slowly glanced at the group. "U-Uhm... I think I'd prefer... Learning how to hunt... Like with Mizuki and her friends... And Luthien with her bow..." Luna admitted, side glancing at @Ueno Mizuki and @Luthien.

"Singing... Would be nice too..." Her eyes shifted to @Lune.

"Singing huh... I'm not good at that- But wolves... I kinda want to have some so I can pet them." Diego grinned, then glancing at @Yugam. "But in the end, what I want to really learn is how to be worth of this!" The boy pointed eagerly at the man's black whistle.

Luna glanced at the boy's eagerness to the object the man had, and she looked at him.

"... You and Luthien really like these whistles, don't you..?" She wondered. "The Keeper always told me to be patient with what I want, as long as we are focused, it is only a matter of time until the moon touches our dreams and turn it into reality." Luna explained

"... A-And I think we can't make fire just talking either." She said, finally showing some playfulness in her tone.

"Oh-" Diego blinked, letting Luna go and scratching his head, dropping his ears. "True, man. But we can do it while we talk, right? So- Why everyone is trying to have a moonstone? Not all of you guys are Explorers, right?" The boy said, trying to get to work while listening to the group's answers.

Camping Scenario (Party) -50 Lead Points

His haste to get away from Meek almost came with a price, the red whistle barely avoiding face planting directly into the ground as he finally squirmed out of the harpy’s grasp. Tensions slowly dissipated once the pups were free, with Luna making her way closer to @Lune while Diego turned to address the ranger.

"Don’t mention it, I’m just glad everyone’s fine." Despite all odds they had successfully managed to diffuse the situation and also avoided any casualties on either side. "Let’s not do this again anytime soon, though."

A hand reached to pat the blonde explorer on the shoulder before she watched the interaction between both caenis, unable to stop the light smile that crossed her lips or the soft chuckle that escaped as Luna tried to give him the now used handkerchief back. The sound of fluttering wings caught her attention as Lúthien turned to look back in the direction of Cheerful, noticing that the sharp feathered harpy that had initially descended upon her was now at the side of the colorful one.

The quietly mouthed thank you was received and answered with a small nod and a smile of her own. That same harpy had rushed to Cheerful’s side when both elves had decided to focus on the same target, and the sight of them together reassured the ranger that she’d done the right thing this time around... even if @Fiora disagreed with her actions.

"DAMN IT, I WANTED A BIT MORE OF FIGHT—"

The loud complaints of the pink brute caused the blonde to jump slightly as she turned back towards the other, before the velvety words of Sadistic brought Lúthien’s attention to the peacock harpy and the hunter. Sharp crimson eyes quickly took notice of the averted gaze and perked up feathers on the creature, the edges of her mouth pulled into an unconscious frown as the peacock’s grasp lingered on @Yugam‘s arm longer than she would’ve liked.

A collective aww (and a single cheer) disrupted her thoughts as Wise informed the clamor they were in for another fruity dinner, the ranger finally noticing the tight grip of her hand around her bow as she was snapped out of her own thoughts. Stop that, you’re being stupid. Quick motions soon caused the weapon and quiver to disappear back into the void of her inventory, but the faintly bitter taste in her mouth remained . Instead she focused on Wise and the last parting words she had for them, before their adventure was finally renewed as the group set back towards the original task of finding shelter for the night.

It was quite late by the time they’d found a suitable location, and the group was forced to rely on one another and the soft glow of the moon as it rose higher into the sky. Diego’s words as the boy took notice of Luna’s necklace caught the ranger’s attention as she surveyed the chosen spot, her hand unconsciously reaching to touch the moonstone on her choker before remembering the words of the owl.

Blessed stones… She’d never heard of such a thing before and, quite probably, none of the violet whistles crafted by explorers in the past had been carved from such rare rocks… a good thing really, it’d be a waste to use such precious gems for whistles that would eventually get replaced as they climbed the ranks.

”Maybe you can even teach Luna too, right, Luna? We can even be Wrestling Champions!”

”"U-Uhm... I think I'd prefer... Learning how to hunt... Like with Mizuki and her friends... And Luthien with her bow..."”

"Mmm, how about this? Once we’re finished setting up camp," Her attention turned to the two caenis and their chatter, glad to see them in good spirits despite the hostage situation they’d been forced to endure not too long ago. "And we get some food in our bellies too, I can teach you a bit about archery Luna… if you want to, of course."

The young girl wasn’t the only one seemingly interested in new things as Diego looked towards @Mizuki‘s packmates with an excited grin, but it didn’t take long before the twin-tailed caenis’ focus was back on the black whistle around Yugam’s neck.

"But in the end, what I want to really learn is how to be worth of this!"

"Better start working on your footwork then," A confident smirk pulled at her lips as the ranger turned her attention towards her fellow explorer, unable to resist teasing her fellow red whistle. "No black whistle would let themselves be yanked into the skies by a harpy~"

A nod of agreement was given as Luna brought the focus back to the task at hand, the elf already looking around the vicinity for any sticks and kindling material that could be used to start a campfire.

"Talking is fine, just make sure your hands are busy while we’re chatting." She'd trust the others to divide the rest of the work labor between them, focusing instead on the youngest of the party. "Luna, can you gather some stones around there?"

Her hand motioned towards a pretty barren spot on the ground, clear enough of any trees or overhead branches but still close enough to the tents so they wouldn’t be cold and left to the elements. "We need to make a ring so the fire can burn without us worrying about crackling wood or stray embers accidentally catching something on fire."

Wounded, behind schedule, mixed with terrible decision-making and a lack of awareness left a recipe as appealing as being living corpse wurm prey. Even if these wurms were way above the group when it came to coordination and organization as a whole.

Fiora sighed off, mounting the better end of her hunter's luck on her right shoulder, as easily as lifting a child despite this being about 170+ pounds of pure boar meat. Worst of all: This wouldn't be nearly enough to feed everyone on the group. But fortunately that wouldn't be much of an issue, given the inventory allowed her to get around the 'carrying dead things' issue, so long as they were dead. As strong as she is, she only had two hands to pick up game with.

At least hunting could be done by herself. Were Luthien here, the boar would have a flower crown and all their provisions before sent on it's way.

Making her way back turned out to be the easy part once their little campsite became a beacon to attract or dither thanks to the bonfire they have crafted themselves. The warmth aided to counter the cold of the night, specially now when she took her jacket off, runic flesh and bandaged wounds exposed to the breeze, overhearing the conversation as she unloaded the cargo onto the grass, yet to be skinned.

Fiora followed up by opening her UI and pulling out a secondary prey. Smaller, but this one had it's feathers plucked at least. The reaper remained fresh, yet a torn wing should be proof enough for the savvy that this lone prey was wounded already. She cast it aside instead, throwing it on an isolated spot of their little camp.

"Should be an appetizer for the wolves." She mentioned as her golden eye locked onto Mizuki, moments before falling on one knee, pulling a curved knife tucked on her belt, the skinning tool put to use right away once the boar was belly up to prepare it for cooking.

The only pause in-between happened once Diego brought forth the nickname she felt obligued to answer at, if he wasn't planning to use her name whatsoever, tilting her head up to get a good look at the posing toddlers, eyeing the fox up and down in particular.

"You have your own strengths, so use them. You don't need muscle to push someone off a cliff, just discipline on what you are good at." She replied, lowering her gaze down to the boar before she continued, only taking note of how Luna didn't have any hunting skills of her own, which only seemed to prove how wrong it was to bring an inexperienced child into the expedition.

The fact Diego pondered why people would want some fancy stone for themselves forced her stare on him once again. "If it's not to turn it into jewelry, it's to be exchanged or grinded down into dust for reagants, or turned into a catalyst. You have plenty of reasons for people to want supposedly magical stones, or a mere pretty stone." It was just a fact. Even these whistles would count for jewelry. But that's just an answer and not one at the same time.

Ronja's goals were more than enough of a reason for her to give these shiny rocks a try.

"But if all you want is to climb up ranks, then learning how to keep yourself alive and not bite more than you can chew already makes you better than the majority of explorers." The Red Fever explorer flop and their blasted headquarters all were points clear enough about being death magnets and meatshields for the rest of the factions. Moreso than the Lion's Brainlets, the defacto meatshields.

While they were setting the camp, Lune instead sat on the side, trying to regenerate the damage from the 'misunderstanding' a few hours ago by just sitting still and doing nothing. It's getting really dark, so in the meantime, she coordinated the group from the rock she sat on top of.

Closing her eyes, the red-haired rested her eyes for a while before the voice of Luna woke her up as she mentioned singing. "Mmm?"

She shifted her position, turning towards her while explaining. "Singing is not hard. The best melody doesn't come from here," Lune pointed to her neck, before her hand moved towards her left chest, where the heart is supposed to be. "It comes from here." It's actually ironic that her heart isn't in there anymore.

The songstress hummed a peaceful, soothing tune, boosting the mood of everyone else doing their jobs. But soon Diego broke the mood by asking about the moonstone.

Lune's face stayed unmoving, as if in disbelief at what Diego just asked everyone including her. "Kid, I mean, you did pull me into this expedition..." She sighed, her arms spread outwards in disbelief while shaking her head. "... I don't actually like rocks, but you kept talking that I felt really bad."

The reveal was a bigger twist than when it turns out Dark Father was actually the father of Duke Skyrunner. If you have been paying attention, then of course that it isn't actually a plot twist.

"If there's some magical artifact, it'll be better."

-50 Scouting Ahead - Cooking

Slowly, Luna was lowered to the ground, followed by Diego (who almost managed to kill himself with his impatient struggling), and with the revival of the Cheerful harpy, it seemed that the truce had been solidified. Well, at least between the two groups. Internally, the harpies were having a little bit of a spat.

"HEY! Piss off, bitch-" the harpy that Yugam had been fighting shouted back at her sister as Yugam winced slightly as her claws dug into the flesh of his already marred forearm. "Don't get her wrong, she is just being an idiot!" she said as she fluttered upright. "... It was a nice fight though, Sinner."
"Likewise,"
the man replied, grimace turning to a slight grin as he returned the handshake and let the bird-woman return to her own.

As Yugam also returned to his party, the harpies departed. All but one, who left some parting words for them, though her eyes seemed to flicker between himself and Mizuki, before finally settling on the caenis. "Keep safe," Yugam said with a nod to the last of the harpies before she flew off with her sisters. "Really think you'll manage to get rid of this other pack?" Yugam asked Mizuki as he watched the harpy. "If you wanna go take care of your shit, you can. Not like you gotta stay or anything."

While the other had spent time setting up camp or hunting, Yugam went ahead and started doing what he did best. Okay, well maybe not best, but something he was at least good at. He'd found the highest vantage point he could, and starting mapping. Mentally. Fact of the matter was, Yugam couldn't draw worth a damn, that had always been Luthien's strong suit, but he could commit the terrain to memory at least, and help guide them in the coming days. The League's catalogue of maps was destroyed, and now, Death's Torchbearers were in the dark once more. Everything was a mystery, all the safe routes lost. Only way to remedy that was to venture out, die, and do it all over again until they'd mapped all the safe paths once again.

By the time Yugam returned, the camp had already been fully set up, a fire was started, and fresh meat had even been brought back and put to roast. That didn't really leave much left for Yugam to do but...well, they couldn't have just meat for dinner. "I'll get some soup going," the man said to no one in particular.

The pot boiled and bubbled over the fire, the thick milky broth bursting, releasing an aroma of herbs and citrus. A couple eggs, some onions, lettuce and rice. Salt, pepper. And the intestines and edible organs from the boar. It wasn't quite right, since it wasn't lamb but, it would do.

"But in the end, what I want to really learn is how to be worthy of this!" Diego's voice drew Yugam's eyes upwards from the stew to the boy, pointing at the black whistle hanging from around his neck, which had spilled out of his shirt. Yugam pretended to ignore the boy. He was skilled, but impulsive. He had a ways to go before making black whistle, but he had potential.

"Soup's ready," the man announced, before beginning to spoon the food into bows with a ladle. "Magiritsa soup," he said, neglecting to explain the contents as he began handing bowls to whoever wanted some.

+23 to Checks, Saves, Buffs, or Heals from Inspire (@Lune)

Mizuki's eyes remained sharp as she watched the harpies gather themselves after their leader had finally decided that there was no point in continuing their hunt. With both Diego and Luna safe back on solid ground her packmates quickly joined the two youngsters. With Lune already looking after them the caenis instead looked at Wise, folding her arms as the owl-like harpy explained that she was familiar with this Keeper entity.

As the harpy declared that they had priority on the alpha Mizuki nodded again.

You can have the alpha. My only concern is chasing them away from these lands before they do any more damage.

That these Moon Fangs were overhunting to the point that other predators were facing acute starvation meant that something was seriously wrong. However, from what little Mizuki knew about them they weren't going to change their ways or leave of their own accord: Moon Fang culture strongly emphasised the concept of "might makes right", so if she wanted to fix this mess she'd probably have to do so by force.

With the harpies finally leaving she turned her head towards @Yugam, tilting it slightly before responding.

It's not going to be easy. If the pack is strong enough that they're forcing these harpies out of their own territory I'll have to avoid a direct confrontation and wear them down over time. (She gave a quick shake of her head.) Restoring the balance in this region could take weeks or months. I'll help you all achieve your goals so you can be on your way first.

Mizuki was a Traveler just like the rest of them, but she felt a connection to these lands that made her motivated to stay and do something. She imagined that once this expedition came to an end the others would quickly return to the kingdom below.

When the others finally felt like it was time to make camp and rest for the night Mizuki would first make her rounds around the camping site, making sure that the terrain was favourable and there weren't any dangerous creatures close by that might feel threatened by their incursion. Her packmates followed suit, the three of them quickly securing the area before returning to the camp.

Seeing Luna performing some kind of prayer towards the moon the wildling approached silently, listening in even if she couldn't quite understand the words. She'd been looking for an opportunity to learn Caenil, but she hadn't made much progress yet.

Sitting down close by she watched Diego and Luna, gauging how much the two of them had recovered from their ordeal. Diego seemed upbeat to the point that he'd barely registered the danger he'd been in, while Luna was taking a bit longer. Not surprisingly, given that Travelers had a hard time taking the dangers of this world seriously, whereas for Landers those dangers were reality.

If you want to learn how to hunt I could help, although there should also be grown-ups from your village who could teach you.

Reaching out Mizuki scratched one of her packmates behind the ears, the wolf's tail wagging behind him before he licked Mizuki's cheek in response.

As a caenis you should also be able to form a bond with our kin. Just keep in mind that they aren't pets: treat them as you would treat a person.

Of course, the relationship didn't have to be like that of equals. As the leader of the pack Mizuki was in charge, even if she made sure not to get flippant with her packmates. Her other packmate was the first to notice @Fiora Di Angelo's arrival, lifting his head towards the elf and sniffing the prey she'd caught before letting out a pleased whine.

Thank you.

Mizuki smiled as Fiora made it clear she'd gone out of her way to catch a reaper so the wolves would have something to eat as well. With two wolves and three caenes in the group making sure there was enough meat for all of them was definitely a priority. Her packmates quickly got to work devouring the snack, stripping flesh from bone with their sharp incisors.

Diego's question didn't really apply to Mizuki, but the wildling answered nonetheless.

I'm here to get all of you in and out of this expedition safely. (She looked from Diego to Luna.) But from the sounds of it the moonstones here might be more than just shiny rocks. More than that I'd like to meet this Keeper.

If the moonstones harvested from Moonfall-adjacent regions actually had some connection to Uene there could be some benefit to acquiring one... but she still wasn't going to take any unless there were enough for everyone else as well.

With her packmates busy devouring the reaper the caenis looked around, seeing that everyone else was busy with camp activities for the moment... Shaking her head Mizuki stood up and walked away from the camp, far enough away that the light from the fire no longer reached her. Sitting down she looked up at the cloudy skies, her fur warding off night's chill as her heterochromatic eyes focused on the crescent moon shining down upon the land from up high.

The fight with the harpies had made it clear that this group had little unity. Different people with strong beliefs, each pursuing their own priorities with limited communication. Attempts were made, but conflict and disagreements meant that everything was disjointed. They'd managed to resolve the situation without any casualties, but she was worried that if they kept going like this the next challenge would have dire consequences.

Unfortunately, there wasn't an easy solution to the problem.

However, she could at the very least try. Even if her methods wouldn't align with what people considered normal.

Closing her eyes she took a deep breath, her ears going backwards and to the sides while her front paws pressed firmly against the ground. With her face still tilted towards the moon she let out a clear howl, the animalistic sound rising into the sky and bouncing off the cliffside.

Back at the camp the two wolves, who were now seated as they gnawed on some bones, lifted their heads and let go of their meal as they listened to their leader's howl. Within seconds they both followed suit, their howls joining Mizuki's. The three howls were each unique, but perfect harmony allowed them to interweave seamlessly, producing a pack's howl from the parts.

For Mizuki herself howling together with her packmates was simply a pleasant experience, but there were two other motivations behind this chorus.

The first was to make their presence clear, a warning to all nocturnal creatures to not come close. A pack of wolves was something everything but the fiercest of predators would stay away from if they had the choice.

The second was that Mizuki could transmit her Primal Aura through her howl, allowing the rest of the expedition to share the sensation of the howl even if they didn't actively take part in it. The message transmitted was quite simple, yet potent.

They were all here together. They might have different opinions, goals, and perspectives, but as long as they were all part of this expedition they were part of the same pack, no matter how short-lived that pack might be. They had come this far together, and they would either succeed together or fail together.

It wasn’t long before the campfire and the tents were up, and @Fiora‘s arrival had coincided with that of @Yugam as he came back from surveying the lands that surrounded them all. With dinner easily covered by them the ranger had rejoined the others by the warmth of the flames, listening to @Lune as she explained what mattered the most when singing to the young caenis girl. A memory flashed within her mind and caused her to grimace, a bloody heart suspended by fate threads within a jar, before the blonde quickly chased it away once more.

"Lune’s right, the best songs are those that come from the heart." Often they were the ones that others could resonate with too, and with so many alternatives when it came to songs and music in general the elf was sure Luna could find one that fit her style.

The scent of roasting boar tickled her nose, accompanied by an aroma of various herbs and citrus front he accompanying stew being made at its side. A soft thrill echoed from within the hood of her jacket, the creature hiding inside wriggling before Tirsk clawed her way out and onto Lúthien’s shoulder. "Hello sleepyhead, had a good nap?"

She scratched the underside of the young basilisk’s chin softly, a soft croon emitted by the creature before their glowing eyes shifted towards the nearby wolves and the reaper they tore into for their meal. { Friends. } A silent reminder was given when the ranger noticed the gaze lingered longer than she felt comfortable with, causing the creature to snap their jaws a few times, before pressing themselves closer to the girl’s neck as Yugam neared with a bowl of stew.

"Thanks babe, it smells delicious." Hands wrapped around the bowl before holding it for a few moments, allowing the heat of its contents to slowly sip into her leather gloves and warm her fingers. The first few mouthfuls only revealed ingredients that she was already accustomed to, a happy hum quietly echoing between each bite as she enjoyed the taste of the stew.

It wasn’t until the third bite that she came across something else in it, a strong and earthy flavor that caused her to pause and look down into the bowl once more. The spoon carefully stirred the contents as she continued to chew slower than before, eventually spotting a few pieces of organs mingling along with the rice and herbs in the broth. It took a moment before Lúthien finally managed to swallow that particular bite, lacking the fondness that others might have for those body parts compared to others, and whenever another piece surfaced she would offer it to Tirsk who was more than willing to gobble them up on her behalf.

A clear howl suddenly broke through the small chatter and nightly sounds, causing the ranger to pause and gaze in the direction @Mizuki had disappeared into not too long ago. The two packmates still and camp soon joined their voices to the song meant for the moon, the blonde closing her eyes as she allowed her ears and mind to focus on the melody and the feelings that quietly washed over them. The reptile on her shoulder bobbed up and down in response, their mouth opening and closing with little croons and thrills.

"You wanna sing along with them, Tirsk?" It was a funny sight to behold once the ranger opened her eyes, a hand softly scratching their head before her attention turned towards @Diego. "You still have the map Beleg gave us, right? Mind if I borrow it for a moment?"

One of the few that had survived the destruction that their Embertorch had endured, though from what Lúthien remembered seeing it was a pretty incomplete one compared to others that had once been available in the League for their members. "Hey Luna, would you mind taking a look at this with me? Maybe we can flesh this out a little more and find a safe path that’ll take us to the Keeper?"

@Fiora Di Angelo's hunting trail left a bloodied scent that tingled the noses of predators that were nearby... And this one in particular, managed to snatch a sight of her green hair, keeping it on sight for the first moments... But soon fading away.

The echo of a howl, however, caught their attention, and they hurried... Soon appearing as a silhouette in the darkened treelines, looming.

"... Grr-"

The growl rumbled into @Ueno Mizuki's ears, with a Primal Aura being sent, showing his distaste for her existence at the moment.

However, as time passed, the growl soon turned into a puzzled slip-

"Hrm?"

It gave time enough for Luna and Diego to have their attention caught, though the initial sight startled them.

It was about time for her to bring to the table some food. She didn't carry with herself seasoning nor had gone out of her way to collect anything for that matter. All she needed was some fine meat, and that's what she offered, given the organs were all used up on Yugam's soup. Not like she planned to make use of these in the first place either- With her survival knife at hand and a makeshift fork pulled straight from her inventory, Fiora made an incision, which didn't took much effort from the knife itself given her luck with the animal proved it to be tender.

"Boar's ready. Feel free to carve in." She lifted the spit out and away from the fire, setting it aside for others to do as they wished, given she wasn't about to give everyone a plate (because she doesn't have that many). A hands-on approach would be, ultimately, what she suggested by exposition as the elf pulled out a few ribs out of the oversized pig.

Of course, there were exceptions to this, and that exception would be little Luna herself. The greenette closed up on the sun claw and stretched out her hand for her to grasp the ribs. "Can't go to sleep with an empty stomach. If you want more, ask me." Fiora added, before moving over to take a cut for herself before flopping down on her seat once again. "Same for you, Diego." She didn't add any extra words to that, given she soon stuffed her mouth with food, using her knife as an improvised fork.

As the tension dissipated, Lune gave the talisman to the caenis male, turning to Diego as the kid protested. "Nothing wrong with never being exposed to danger, Diego." She responded while sighing.

"Lost sassy pup?"

The sudden moment made the woman chuckle lightly. Holding her laugh back, she nodded at the unexpected joke while adding "Yes. Yes, he is." Diego's annoyed face just added to her entertainment.

Lune raised her eyebrows at @Fiora Di Angelo's comment that a group of strangers with a Moonfang-looking caenis was pretty suspicious. "Really? The way I look doesn't emanate trustfulness?" She gestured to her obviously-starcalled-looking clothes, or just her appearance in general. But then she realized that basing her appearance on a woman that almost ended the universe wasn't a good idea.

"Don't worry, nothing's ever too big for people like us." The red-wine haired woman assured confidently as she walked toward the other. Food was ready and it was time for them to just sit down and finally take time to rest. "Yes, join us for a meal, please." She added to Fiora's offer, since it's pretty dark and it's better to stick together. And they have more food than they can handle, anyway.

The woman looked down at the soup Yugam handed to her. Organs. Pretty peculiar, but it was uncommon from where she actually came from. "Looks interesting. It smells delicious, @Yugam." Turning the caenis man, she offered the bowl. "Soup?"

After the hearty meal of roasted boar meat and whatever Greek soup that was (that turned out to be quite tasty), Lune rested near the campfire. There are some members of the party who haven't fully replenished yet, and they have a pretty long day tomorrow. For the rest of the night, she ended up humming softly, causing the magic around them to soothe and bring comfort to the group as they rest and recover.

It wasn’t easy to fill out empty parts of the map when you hadn’t actually seen the places being described, the elf careful and keeping her strokes light on its surface so it could be amended later on as they traveled. Still Luna’s descriptions were helpful and, with a little bit of luck and following her gut feeling, soon the ranger felt their map had been updated enough for the time being.

The presence of another had been noticed then, keen eyes spotting the dark silhouette against the tree line, and she remained closer to the kids while Mizuki and Lune figured out if the stranger was a friend or a foe. "I see…" It didn’t take long to reveal he seemed to be the good Moon Fang that Luna had mentioned before, the tension in their makeshift camp easing just as Fiora finished roasting the wild boar.

Once everyone was fed and relaxed the blonde pulled out the revised map for the others to see, careful to keep it far enough from the burning campfire to avoid any mishaps, before pointing at a particular path that had caught her attention. "Given what we know so far this trail here seems like our best bet to reach the Keeper tomorrow… what do you guys think?" Her gaze first shifted towards Diego, curious to see if her fellow red whistle shared the same opinion, before shifting towards the others present.

It would be best to figure out their next steps, and watch shifts, now so they could set off at first light tomorrow morning and use the day to the fullest.

It seemed that Lune had received something from the stable owner to hand over to the Moon Fang in case she encountered him, which seemed to help the silver-haired male acknowledge that they weren't hostile, even if his relationship with Ataru seemed... complex.

Regardless, now that Luna had soothed his worries and confirmed that she was here of her own volition the hostility was gone, meaning that Mizuki could also loosen up a bit. Pushing herself up onto her hind paws she looked away to hide a smirk as Diego was referred to as a sassy pup, made worse by the redhead's affirmation and Luna's... lacklustre defence of her travelling companion. Her packmates also turned away once they received the signal, one of them sniffing the air before following the other towards where they'd been chewing the remnants of the reaper.

Noticing Fiora's look Mizuki gave the elf a small nod. The green-haired fighter seemed to share her wariness, but unless this Moon Fang had somehow learned to outright lie with his Primal Aura (something she wasn't sure was even possible) they didn't have to worry about a fight unless something else triggered him.

Letting Luna tag along was not the most responsible decision. We'll have to make sure she returns safely to the village. (She sighed.) Hopefully the villagers won't be too upset...

Their original chilly reception might have been negated by the realisation that Mizuki, @Luthien, and @Yugam were part of the team that returned Haito safely to the Sirosi-Kotan, but kidnapping children had a habit of getting people riled up.

Silver-coat's warning was one Mizuki did take seriously, answering with her own Primal Aura to help emphasise that she was in no way dismissing his concerns.

Understood. Not seeking fight. Only seeking Keeper and blessed stones.

Another question occurred to her, alongside the realisation which made her frown and raise a furred hand to partially hide her face. This time she made sure that the Moon Fang was the only one to receive the message, as she really didn't want to receive the commentary she'd get from the others...

I'm... Beautiful Moon. Your name?

In hindsight, she really should've reconsidered naming herself Mizuki. It was a standard Japanese name, but when you translated it... And she couldn't transmit Japanese through her Primal Aura either: only ideas and concepts.

Dismissing her internal groaning with a quick shake of the head she would wait for the Moon Fang to either answer the question or refuse to disclose his name. Either way, she'd follow up by gesturing towards the camp.

Want to join? Can eat food, talk with Luna.

She wasn't the first to make that offer, but nonetheless wanted to make it clear that just like the others she had no reason to reject his presence now that it was clear they weren't enemies.

Returning to the camp together with the others her ears perked up as Lune's humming helped provide a pleasing atmosphere. Ever since the harpies had attacked they'd all been a bit tense, so anything which helped make everybody feel at ease was welcome. She was about to sit down together with her wolves to take her part of the meal Fiora and Yugam had so thoughtfully provided when she glanced towards their guest, then at the rest of the group.

Luna had been an unexpected addition to the expedition, but since she was still young Fiora's boar more than made up for her presence. However, the Moon Fang was fully grown... and most likely his hunger was just as insatiable as Mizuki's own. With two elves, two humans, four caenes, and two wolves... a single boar might actually not be enough.

As that thought rested in her mind she looked at the map Luthien had managed to draw up, and the route she was suggesting to all of them.

We can't be sure that the Keeper will remain in the same place, especially with the trouble in the area. (She glanced towards Luna.) Safety is a bigger concern than haste.

Looking up she considered their options. It was already dark, so she'd have to hurry... After silently conversing with her packmates the two wolves stood up while the caenis looked back down towards her companions.

If one of you takes the first watch I can go and do some scouting, and maybe grab some more prey so we can start tomorrow with a good meal as well.

Seeing that both @Lune and @Fiora Di Angelo deflected his opinion, Diego huffed and pouted, crossing his arms and plopping his butt on a fallen log that was being used as a seat while averting his face while grumbling quietly.

Luna frowned, raising her hand for a moment, but the Moonfang simply shook his head and placed a hand on her shoulder, making her pause. He then glanced at the elf, nodding.

"Thank. Smell good."

He bowed with his head, approaching to take a seat and taking a bit of the ribs, while Luna took some to herself with a small smile.

"It really smells good, I want to try the soup too!"

She approached @Yugam, already helping herself with a happy, waving tail. Still pouty, Diego only returned his gaze to the group when @Luthien requested his opinion.

"That trail is the easiest to follow, from what I know. It is really hard to miss your step from there, but I don't know-" Diego finally reached for some food. "It may be a bit too dangerous for some."

There was a hint of childish annoyance in his tone.

Meanwhile, the other caenis devoured his meal, interrupting it when the question reached his instincts. He glanced at @Ueno Mizuki, and the primal response came after a couple seconds of hesitation-

Azure Moon. Don't say it outloud.

After the response, the group continued their meal, with a bit of conversation between a bite or another. It wasn't hard for those that had Primal Aura to notice most of the Moonfang's conversation with Luna was through it, with one or another word being spoken to complement a complexity of what they wanted to talk.

At some point, with a cheerier mood, Diego tried to barge in, until Mizuki spoke of scouting and taking preys.

"I help."

As he spoke, Luna was quick to add:

"Ah! Me too... I want to see how all of you hunt..."

"Make it four then! Or well, six!" He looked at the wolves. "A big pack for a big hunt!"

"A peaceful night then went on, with the flames of the campfire bringing the warmth and light the group needed to spend a restful night..." She gestured around.

"Hmmmm-"

"Hm?" She tilted her head.

"HMMMMMMMM-"

"What is wrong, Listener?"

"There will be another ambush, right? Overnight, while everyone is sleeping, that's totally a thing you would tell, Auntie!"

"But you are wrong, this time."

"I'm seeing you writing a footnote on that page!"

"Ahem- In the following morning..."

HYLANDS ASCENT
Morning
Weather: Rainy and Chilly

Before they had left, the kind Moonfang, Azure, had left them with brief words-

"I drive fangs away. You take stones... And see Keeper."

It was probably the most he spoke during all the time the group had met him, and while Luna had her reservations about just letting him go do anything that could've been reckless.

The group continued their march to find the Keeper and the moon stones, with the step up to the Ascent becoming rougher at every hour that passed. The cloudy weather from before eventually developed into a faint rain after a chilly wind brushed the mountains and explorers.

Slowly, the rain started catching up, becoming strong enough to be an inconvenience, but not strong enough to be a complete problem.

Luna and Diego remained mostly together, with the Sunclaw borrowing the Red Whistler's jacket and his neck bandana, which helped with the cold while he held up an umbrella that was summoned through a small magitech data capsule, something that had puzzled Luna at first, but as soon as he opened it, her eyes grew wide in surprise.

"Cool, right?" Diego asked, smugly even if his legs quivered in cold.

Luna nodded eagerly, hiding under the umbrella.

"If we had one of these, the rain would never catch us by surprise..." She smiled.

"Exactly. If everything is portable, you can always be ready for anything. And nothing is better than being prepared for anything!"

He spoke proudly, as the group went through a slightly narrow gap, with sharp rocks poking out of the walls and grounds, and a faulty ground being dangerously slippery... Not too far ahead, the path obviously went even further up, but there was also a small shelter, one that seemed to be the entrance of a cave.

"Oooh, look at that, we are almost- Watch out!"

"Huh?!"

Diego tugged Luna away from a rock malformation, enough to stop her from getting cut, simply scratching her forehead slightly. The explorer boy, however, wasn't so lucky, slipping on the faulty ground and soon losing his balance and foot, screaming in surprise as he nearly twisted his leg an fell.

"WOWOWOAAAH!"

Scouting Ahead

[ 1001/1687 ]
Total scores gave the group a couple hints of what to expect in the next phase.
It also lowered the complications' damage and DC.

Leading the Way

[ 972/1272 ]
Total scores allowed the group to reach the next checkpoint before the Afternoon.
It also opened an alternative path.

During your path, complications will occur.

Make a DC 100 70 Fitness or Knack Check. If you fail, you lose your Main Action due to the complication.

Regardless if you fail or succeed, you must roll one of the following complications. You may spend a Main Action to avoid the complication, or to save someone from a complication:
  1. Roll Down. You take a faulty step and rolls down. You take 10d20 8d20 damage. You may halve the damage, using your Bonus Action to make a DC 100 70 Reflex or Fortitude Save.

  2. Sharp Edge. Rock formations are sharper than blades, cutting through your flesh when you are too distracted to avoid it. You take 6d20 4d20 damage and gains 1d4 Bleed Stacks. You may halve the damage and condition stacks, using your Bonus Action to make a DC 100 70 Reflex Save.

  3. Poisonous Prickle. A dangerous plant stings you with its thorns, a burning sensation runs through your body and you feel weakened. You take 6d20 4d20 damage and gains 1d4 Poison Stacks. You may halve the damage and condition stacks, using your Bonus Action to make a DC 100 70 Fortitude Save.

  4. Slippery Ground. The wet ground is slippery, and a misstep sends you down and hurts your legs. You take 6d20 4d20 damage and gains 1d2 Slow Stacks. You may halve the damage and condition stacks, using your Bonus Action to make a DC 100 70 Reflex Save.
*Stacks halved through Save are rounded down (minimum of 0).

After going through the Complications, you may choose one of the two following paths:

Hiking & Climbing

A strenuous path.

Physical exertion is greatly expected, with immediate dangers and a bad weather that doesn't seem willing to go any time soon, so waiting seems unfeasible.

However, it is the path you know.

Dungeoneering

An eerie alternative.

Wariness and good senses are required. It is a path that none of you were expecting, but seems less rough than a climb with a bad rain, yet... You don't know what to expect.

However, it may be a shortcut.

"This weather is less than ideal..."

The rain picked up. Not a big issue, but still an annoyance. When Diego mentioned being prepared, a white-haired Russian woman came to her mind. "I have a friend who is prepared for literally everything." A woman so prepared that she might even be Batman in real life. Or Batwoman.

Looking at the small gap, Lune looked at the rest of the party. "This doesn't look like the path we already planned." It seemed that it was connecting into a sort of mountain cave or a dungeon, but it's a gamble whether it actually leads to the peak.

As the explorer boy warned the Sunclaw girl of the danger, Lune quickly turned around as Diego himself was now in a position of an unpleasant fall among the sharp rocks. "Diego!" The woman quickly dashed through sharp, thorned plants, trying to grab the kid or cushion his fall.

Mizuki was somewhat surprised when Azure answered her question but refrained from commenting. Instead, she used her Primal Aura to acknowledge his request: there was no reason for her to use his name out loud if he didn't want the others to know about it, and she could use it to address him without the others noticing anyway.

When not only Azure, but Luna and Diego as well, insisted on joining the hunt the wildling happily accepted their presence. Of course, she was going to make sure her packmates covered Luna so the villager wouldn't get into any accidents while they were running around in the middle of the night, but she was curious how the three caenes would contribute to the hunt.

Azure's suggestion that he'd keep the other Moon Fangs from getting in their way was acknowledged with a nod, although even as she watched him leave Mizuki wondered. He'd thought that the Moon Fangs were too numerous for their small group to deal with them, but now he was suggesting he could handle them by himself. Was he planning to rely on cleverness to make up for the disparity, or did he have that much fate in his abilities?

Stay safe.

Taking the lead as they finished their morning routine and set out to continue their journey she'd use hands and feet equally to climb the increasingly treacherous path that lay ahead, her packmates sticking close to her so any one of them could assist the others. Her thick fur warded off the cold air that brushed against them as well as protecting her skin from the rain that met their group.

Watch your step.

They'd tried to find a path which was relatively safe, but a misstep could still lead to one's feet betraying them and sending them sliding down the cliffside.

Which was made apparent when they had to make their way through a particularly treacherous path, where rain and wind must have carved out a passage which had left behind sharp, slick rocks and a perfect runway for the rain, replacing gravel with slippery mud on smooth rocks.

Hearing a cry from behind her Mizuki twisted her neck, but as she'd already been taking her next step she ended up ignoring her own warning. As her footing was lost she tumbled down, the only thing preventing a more unfortunate outcome being that she quickly dug her claws into the ground to bring herself to a halt... as well as a helping hand from Fiora, the wildling giving the elf a quick, grateful nod before turning her attention towards Lune.

Sending her magic into the ground Mizuki forced the poisonous plants to retreat, creating a clear pathway through which the redhead could reach Diego and prevent his fall. From the looks of it nearly everyone was having a hard time with this part of the journey, which did make the underground route more tempting...

Is everyone all right?

With some assistance from her wolves she climbed back to a safer position, mismatched eyes seeking out every member of the expedition before she glanced into the cave which they'd happened upon. She hadn't been able to scout this far ahead last night, but she frowned as she considered their options.

Hrmmm... Better to stick with what we know.

With his hood tugged over his head, and his jacket pulled tightly around his shoulders, Yugam scowled at the bitter wind and frigid rain that pelted the party, close enough to hail (for someone who grew up in a desert at least) for him to think that this was some kind of divine punishment from the gods. Or maybe karmic justice.

Suffice it to say that Yugam was sufficiently annoyed with the weather, and that the next small series of unfortunate events did not make the man any happier. Luna nearly poked her eye out, Mizuki found some not too friendly plants, Diego nearly fell into a shallow ravine, and Lune rushed forward to grab him...inadvertently knocking Yugam into the crevasse instead, the man instinctively creating a shell of blood to absorb his impact, stray tendrils of blood darting to the youngest of the group as well.

Yugam landed at the bottom of whatever hole he'd fallen into with a thud and a groan. "Next time, Beleg, you can babysit the kiddies..." Yugam muttered quietly to himself before getting to his feet and dusting himself off.

Fiora tugged from the edges of her jacket, the sheepskin certainly helped with keeping her warm. But if the rain of her face isn't enough of a problem, it's the treacherous paths they had to go through while enduring the downpour. It didn't help how unsteady the floor would be even for those well prepared. Simply put, no one in the group was ready for mother nature's assault...

Her eye squinted a little, making sure to keep her iceaxes close should she had a need for them, and given the nature of the Ascent itself, this would prove to be the case one way or another, as even in the best conditions it only made the way up a little less dangerous. A scream caught her attention up to the front, and while she expected the worst, the fact @Ueno Mizuki slipped was a priority, dropping herself to a knee, with one hand holding the edge and the other stretched out for the caenis. Pulling her back up was done slowly, if only to not slip up herself and send them both rolling down.

"Got you." She sighed off once they were both back on their feet. There was no need to exchange words between them, as they knew already which direction to go, with Mizuki taking the front and the greenette heading back with the other half of the party, her gaze set over to @Luthien as the ranger suffered a similar fate, yet she was a bit too late to reach her out from a safe spot.

So she dropped down instead, catching the blonde's wrist and dragging her free arm over the sharp rocks, hard enough to break through her skin and lacerate flesh just a little, right before thrusting her hand through stone to halt their very short descent. Her eyes went up to the edge, so close yet so far away at the same time, then down to Luthien, yanking her closer back then throwing her upwards and back to the safety of solid ground, giving herself one hand to get one of her iceaxes and thrusting them against the stone to latch onto, removing her arm from the rocks to get the second one and climb her way back up.

"Let's not fuck with the rain any longer..." She laid over on the floor, panting and gasping as she stood on her feet and walked over to Mizuki. They had two options set to them, and none seemed to be pleasant in the slightest. Picking their poison, as they say, a frown crossing her face just then.

"As much as I hate going down the mystery path, the storm's getting worse. We can't rely on our route anymore." Not like either option wasn't a death trap to begin with...

Unfolding the Unknown
Everything happened way too fast. Almost as if a domino effect had been triggered, perhaps because of the surprise of one another, half of the group saw themselves slipping and falling into a few threatening natural obstacles the Ascent had.

For Diego, it was a surprise to see a sharp rock approaching so abruptly, and as much as he flailed, it seemed to be to no avail. In the fraction of second he braced himself for a painful impact, @Lune went through poisonous thorns that were averted by @Ueno Mizuki's efforts, that had just been saved by @Fiora Di Angelo, who had just bruteforced through the fall, also saving Luthien, as both had almost plummeted to a deadly fall. @Yugam didn't have the same luck, however, he made it do by himself, cushioning what he could from his fall.

"A-AH!"

Diego gasped, looking at Lune with a surprised expression, blinking twice and then looking down at the rocks before looking back at her.

"A-Are you alright?!"

Luna asked as she approached, with a worried look on her face while Diego had a mildly shocked one, but soon, he recovered.

"H-Hah? Me? Of course I am!" He chirped. "I had a hero with me~" Diego said looking at Lune. It may have sounded like a joke, but his smile to her was genuine and grateful.

"Thank you, Lune!"

He wrapped an arm around the songstress for a quick hug, also taking it as a support to get back to his feet, looking at Mizuki and nodding.

"A cut here, a cut there. But overall we look pretty good? How are you, Luna?" He questioned.

"Me? I am good... But it is because of me that you fell... uhm... I'm sorry..."

"Ah, don't worry 'bout it. It wasn't because of you." He pointed at his bare neck. "I'm just without my lucky bandana. So I screwed up!"

Luna blinked, fidgeting her fingers on the bandana on her neck, with her lips slightly parted before she smiled faintly.

"I-I see... Thank you... For helping me."

With a grin, Diego thumbed up, and he looked at the eerie cave some pointed out.

"Wow, that looks kinda spooky, I love it!" He perked up, pausing for a moment and relaxing. "It may be a bit safer too... I guess we had plenty of dangers right now." He admitted, a bit pouty at first, but casting a glance at Fiora and Lune. "It should be better to us too, we don't want to catch a cold. Right, Luna?"

"Y-Yeah... But I've never really entered a cave before..."

"Well, there is a first time for everything!"

"I remember in stories you've told me before, Auntie, that whenever the travelers take another path, they get eaten by horrible monsters."

"It is rule number one from horror stories, dear. You don't take another path, it always lead to death." She tilted her head.

"S-So you mean?!"

"Hahaha... Of course not. This isn't a horror story. This is an adventure, and adventures always have detours..."

HYLANDS ASCENT - CAVE
Afternoon?
Weather: Dark and Eerie

As the group ventured deeper into the cave, the darkness was way too strong for them to manage to see too far from any torch or light magic they wielded.

The paths were rather disorienting, and they had to rely on basic tricks to make sure they weren't walking in circles or that they would get lost, for the annoyance of the prodigy, that could only sigh as he kept a chalk scratching against the rocky walls, marking the path they were taking while he held Luna's hand.

"Gaaah... This is so boring... That's such a weird cave. I thought it would be a large one..." Diego lamented.

Luna looked around, uncertain.

"Caves are darker than I thought... But they are a little cozy..." Her tail swayed calmly.

Diego frowned a bit.

"Cozy? Are you a bear or a bat or something?" Diego rose his eyebrow, only for him to be surprised by the rock formation that soon was revealed by the light of the torches. "Oh my gosh, look at these!"

He perked up, rushing while tugging Luna along, making her squeak but catch up the pace by running with him, approaching the pointy rocks that grew from the ground and from the ceiling.

"They are such cool stalactites and stalagmites! Don't you think, Lune, Fiora?" Diego pointed at them, asking to the redhead and the greenette. "Aah, I want to bring one home!"

"They do look nice, but... What is this..?" Her ears twitched, and she pointed at a strange gray ooze.

"Glugurbugurubuubrurg"

"Ew. What the nutcrackers is that?" Diego hid his chalk, pulling out his hiking stick and poking it. Seconds later, the stick simply melted.

"E-Eeek?!"

The two kids shuddered, with Luna wrapping her arms on Diego's arm while he pulled himself and her away before tossing whatever that remained of the stick at the ooze, making it flinch and retract, before engulfing the stick.

"Y... Yeah. I guess we will need to be a little careful."

Scouting Ahead

[ 1001/1687 ]

Leading the Way

[ 972/1272 ]

Every time you roll bellow 50 in the Natural Dice of a Scouting Ahead or a Leading the Way check, you trigger one Complication, that will be unleashed at yourself and the next poster, unless specified otherwise. The Complications are unleashed on order.

Those without Night Vision roll with -30 on the Scouting Ahead and Leading the Way checks.

Those with Night Vision may roll above 20 on the Natural Dice to avoid causing the Complication.
  1. Icky splashes occur at every step, and wrong movements get them to touch an acidic and viscuous liquid, created by moss slimes that cover walls and ceilings. Roll a DC 100 Reflex Save or Awareness Check to avoid receiving 4d20 magical damage.

  2. A swarm of ferocious bats engulf the whole group, causing chaos, confusion and pain with their bites. Everyone must make a DC 100 Reflex Save to avoid receiving 4d20 physical damage.

  3. The group find themselves engulfed in a mist. The first ones to smell notice something is off, quick enough to warn the others, but not enough to avoid breathing it themselves. Roll a DC 100 Will Save or Awareness Check to avoid falling Asleep. Those with Restless Sleep trait are immune to this.

  4. Two random members of the group will accidentally separate from the group. This will trigger an Interjection post.
On top of that, by the end of the Cycle you must have 1.800 total points on both Leading the Way and Scouting Ahead to avoid becoming lost (consequences to be known).

As expected, this path was as much of a pain in the ass as their original route would have been, yet she couldn't decide which was worse. Her visual impairment, topped off by the lack of clear sight despite having plenty of sources to light up their path, only made for a much more calamitous mixture. Yet it was darkness, or rain on the face. Neither would grant them much sight to begin with...

Her gaze went over the pointy rocks then back at Diego as she took one step closer and kneeled down, wrapping a hand onto one of the stalagmites and tearing it with a bit of a twist, before offering it to the explorer. "-Only- if you stash it for the rest of the trip." She clinged onto it until he agreed before letting go of the mineral. Given it's flat and round tip compared to it's brothers and sisters hanging down from the ceiling, it had some insurance that he wouldn't stab himself with it by accident.

It came just in time for her to catch sight of the grey ooze. At the very least, Diego didn't just touch it bare handed, but the revelation of it's acidic nature didn't brought any comfort to her. Fiora then glanced at @Ueno Mizuki. "Already liking the idea of free-falling from a mountain more than cave crawling." She sighed.

The steps upon the cave turned less rocky and more splash-y at a certain point, forcing her to mind her feet a bit more than she wanted. It surprised her when the cave didn't extend as far to the left as she expected it to, her left side being a complete blindspot given her missing eye, pain rushing through her left arm as she felt the drops of ooze smear over her and pierce through her jacket, forcing her to stop and step aside, shaking her shoulder a little as a reflex.

"Fuck! Don't touch the walls." The burnt didn't help with the wounds she picked up while helping the ranger, baring her fangs as she tried to fight it through, one deep breath at a time.

A sigh of relief escaped the songstress' lips as Diego thanked her for saving him. "Be careful next time..." This was only afternoon but she already felt tired. Is this what every babysitter has to walk through? Props to them, really.

Even in the darkness of the cave, both Luna and Diego still had that curious energy in them. "Hey, hey, do not rush in blindly." Lune reminded them lightly to be careful.

Her reaction to Diego talking about the cave's pointy rocks was "What's so cool about stalactites and stalagmites?" She raised her eyebrows, reminding them again that she is in fact, not a geologist. "Sure, why not. Bring one back home or something." As long as he's satisfied.

As Fiora warned them about the walls, she failed to notice that the acidic liquid also exists in the form of puddles, and one lousy step was all it took to splash a handful towards Lune.

"Ouch!" She exclaimed, trying to cover her eyes from the liquid. Instinctively she creates a thin steel layer on her skin to block the acid, but it ate the protective film anyway, albeit not dealing much damage to her skin. Her clothes, on the other hand...

"Great."

Most of the right sleeve was gone, the jacket became nothing but strips of leather, and holes on the white shirt made it look as if she was hit by a barrage of bullets.

"Let's proceed more carefully. Please?"
