The morning sun rises on a quiet community, and its people rouse to greet the new day.
Spring is ending. The flowers scatter and fall, carried on gentle winds. In the flower's wake comes the promise of new life.
But more immediately is the morning's promise of something more imminent - the start of the school day. Slowly but surely, the daily migration of students fated to a day of education begins.
Within this community, six souls awaken. But something is different...

You’d almost think you were just logged out. It’s the small things that prove otherwise - furniture that isn’t quite right. An unfamiliar view through the window. The complete lack of the VR headset that you should have in your room.
But you don’t remember logging out. And if you focus, you can see a pale imitation of Investigation mode overlaying your sight. The labels flicker and distort, sometimes unreadable, sometimes changing between one examination and the other. But it is there.
A parent calls you from the room. They are familiar, but their face doesn’t quite seem right, and their name and status change between saccades. They tell you it’s time for school. But when’s the last time you did that?

You wake up, surrounded by artifacts of a world you lost years ago. Things that no Lander, however wealthy, could ever possess, because such things simply do not exist in the world that is now your own. And as hazy as your memories may be, there’s no mistaking the face you see in the mirror. All that you made yourself feels like naught but a vivid dream.
But if you reach out, you can feel a power within your grasp, something a human could never have.
You step downstairs, and things get worse. The people who greet you bid you good morning, and they act as if they’re family, but their faces are familiar in a way that feels painful. They tell you to get ready for school.
They have no pain to bear. You feel nothing at all.

You are meant to be two. This is the thought that crosses your mind as you look in the mirror. This face that isn’t yours, and only one of them? It’s not right.
So you become two once more. It makes your head hurt and fog, but it’s right.
The faces may still be wrong, but fixing that is somehow beyond you. Nor can you do anything about the house you’re in, or the people who call themselves your family telling you to get ready for school. They don’t seem to notice that you, who woke up as one, are now two. They don’t seem to notice anything strange about you at all.
You understand puppets. You cannot help but see the similarities.

The room you wake up in feels like home. But at the same time, it feels unfamiliar, like it is a place you haven’t been for years and years. The more you dwell, the more pronounced it becomes. The more sure you are that this isn’t real.
Yet those other memories: blurry memories of a life lived long ago, they feel just as real. As does the house you wander, and the family you meet - though they don’t seem quite right. Sometimes, you feel like they’re moving when you look away, appearing and vanishing without a sound.
It’s time for school, you’re told. You feel like you haven’t had to worry about that for a long time.
…why were there two beds in your room?

It feels so real. It’s your house, your face, your family greeting you as you begin your day. Everything feels like it should be, as if the past four years never happened.
But even with your blurry memories, you can’t deny the truth. You know that wherever you are, it’s not a place you should be. It’s not a place you can be, anymore. You don’t remember how you got here, and the more you try to remember, the less real this place seems to be. The longer you stay with your family, the more you notice how they seem off.
A place like this, that looks so much like your home… it should be safe. But you’ve become accustomed to danger, and your instincts are a clarion call telling you otherwise.

When you wake up, a strange dream haunts your mind. Visions of a world, its name on the tip of your tongue. Thoughts with an unfamiliar weight linger at the back of your mind. You can’t shake that dream, even as you go through your morning routine and your family sees you off to school.
It’s a lovely day, just like every other day in your memories (but those memories are blurry somehow). Everything and everyone seems normal, but the feeling remains. Something feels wrong, like some part of you is still dreaming. Like something or someone is whispering wake up, but you’re already awake. (Right?)
Around you are friends, acquaintances, most the same as always, but others seem different. Somehow fuller, brighter, a splash of saturated hue against a world that seems just subtly grey. A strange sense of anticipation follows you all the way to school. You feel like something different is going to happen today.
All roads lead to school here. If you try to go truant, it seems that you inevitably end up right back at the school, a fly slipping back down a pitcher plant’s gullet. The squat grey building draws you, and you cannot escape it forever.
Once you enter, alien habit guides your path towards a certain floor, a certain hallway, a certain room. Students with indistinct faces gather and chatter as students do, complaining about teachers and worrying about grades.
There is a desk that is yours here, even if you’ve never seen it before.
And perhaps, somewhere among the others, there are faces that are familiar. Maybe even faces that look as lost as you.
What do you do?
