Cycle 0 - "The dream I once saw, make it come true.”
BGM - Tidus’ Theme

  • The morning sun rises on a quiet community, and its people rouse to greet the new day.

Spring is ending. The flowers scatter and fall, carried on gentle winds. In the flower's wake comes the promise of new life.

But more immediately is the morning's promise of something more imminent - the start of the school day. Slowly but surely, the daily migration of students fated to a day of education begins.

Within this community, six souls awaken. But something is different...

(Click the tab with your character's name for more.)
  • ???: 4

You’d almost think you were just logged out. It’s the small things that prove otherwise - furniture that isn’t quite right. An unfamiliar view through the window. The complete lack of the VR headset that you should have in your room.

But you don’t remember logging out. And if you focus, you can see a pale imitation of Investigation mode overlaying your sight. The labels flicker and distort, sometimes unreadable, sometimes changing between one examination and the other. But it is there.

A parent calls you from the room. They are familiar, but their face doesn’t quite seem right, and their name and status change between saccades. They tell you it’s time for school. But when’s the last time you did that?
  • ???: 3

You wake up, surrounded by artifacts of a world you lost years ago. Things that no Lander, however wealthy, could ever possess, because such things simply do not exist in the world that is now your own. And as hazy as your memories may be, there’s no mistaking the face you see in the mirror. All that you made yourself feels like naught but a vivid dream.

But if you reach out, you can feel a power within your grasp, something a human could never have.

You step downstairs, and things get worse. The people who greet you bid you good morning, and they act as if they’re family, but their faces are familiar in a way that feels painful. They tell you to get ready for school.

They have no pain to bear. You feel nothing at all.
  • ???: 3

You are meant to be two. This is the thought that crosses your mind as you look in the mirror. This face that isn’t yours, and only one of them? It’s not right.

So you become two once more. It makes your head hurt and fog, but it’s right.

The faces may still be wrong, but fixing that is somehow beyond you. Nor can you do anything about the house you’re in, or the people who call themselves your family telling you to get ready for school. They don’t seem to notice that you, who woke up as one, are now two. They don’t seem to notice anything strange about you at all.

You understand puppets. You cannot help but see the similarities.
  • ???: 3

The room you wake up in feels like home. But at the same time, it feels unfamiliar, like it is a place you haven’t been for years and years. The more you dwell, the more pronounced it becomes. The more sure you are that this isn’t real.

Yet those other memories: blurry memories of a life lived long ago, they feel just as real. As does the house you wander, and the family you meet - though they don’t seem quite right. Sometimes, you feel like they’re moving when you look away, appearing and vanishing without a sound.

It’s time for school, you’re told. You feel like you haven’t had to worry about that for a long time.

…why were there two beds in your room?
  • ???: 3

It feels so real. It’s your house, your face, your family greeting you as you begin your day. Everything feels like it should be, as if the past four years never happened.

But even with your blurry memories, you can’t deny the truth. You know that wherever you are, it’s not a place you should be. It’s not a place you can be, anymore. You don’t remember how you got here, and the more you try to remember, the less real this place seems to be. The longer you stay with your family, the more you notice how they seem off.

A place like this, that looks so much like your home… it should be safe. But you’ve become accustomed to danger, and your instincts are a clarion call telling you otherwise.
  • ???: 1

When you wake up, a strange dream haunts your mind. Visions of a world, its name on the tip of your tongue. Thoughts with an unfamiliar weight linger at the back of your mind. You can’t shake that dream, even as you go through your morning routine and your family sees you off to school.

It’s a lovely day, just like every other day in your memories (but those memories are blurry somehow). Everything and everyone seems normal, but the feeling remains. Something feels wrong, like some part of you is still dreaming. Like something or someone is whispering wake up, but you’re already awake. (Right?)

Around you are friends, acquaintances, most the same as always, but others seem different. Somehow fuller, brighter, a splash of saturated hue against a world that seems just subtly grey. A strange sense of anticipation follows you all the way to school. You feel like something different is going to happen today.

All roads lead to school here. If you try to go truant, it seems that you inevitably end up right back at the school, a fly slipping back down a pitcher plant’s gullet. The squat grey building draws you, and you cannot escape it forever.

Once you enter, alien habit guides your path towards a certain floor, a certain hallway, a certain room. Students with indistinct faces gather and chatter as students do, complaining about teachers and worrying about grades.

There is a desk that is yours here, even if you’ve never seen it before.

And perhaps, somewhere among the others, there are faces that are familiar. Maybe even faces that look as lost as you.

What do you do?

The words came unintelligible to him as he bolted upright, sun filtered through the window onto a bed that didn't quite look familiar. His eyes flicked one way, then the other as he assessed his surroundings. After a moment, he exhaled. It wasn't all that strange after all. The dream he was having- or nightmare, maybe? Whatever. It had been pretty surreal. Maybe that was why he was having a struggle with what was, and what wasn't today.

"Theo, wake up!" That same, distinctly masculine voice cut through, but this time he could make out the words. He strained as he turned to look at the door, and a familiar face was looking back at him, concerned. "There you are, finally. It's time for school, you're going to be late."

He squinted, peering at the obvious face of his father as he pulled the sheets aside and started for the bathroom to wash his face. After the cold water hit him, he shook off the buzz and glanced back out toward his father. "What are you spacing out for? Get ready!"

Theo took longer than a second to process the situation. Something in his gut said that the situation was wrong, but his mind had immediately accepted things as they were. Why was his body completely at odds with his psyche? As he pulled his uniform shirt overhead and buttoned his pants, he could have sworn that he'd never done any of this before.

Or maybe he had, a lifetime ago. It felt like routine, despite being foreign. Or was it that it felt foreign despite how he had fallen into routine? Sometimes life worked out that way. Your mind played tricks on you because you got too comfortable with your little fragment of reality.

The walk to school was uneventful, just the same neighborhood, the same faces, the same path. All roads led to the school, here.

Pulling the pack off his shoulder, Theo settled into his desk. The same desk, the same people, the same routine. He started sifting through his binders and books for the assignment that was due at the beginning of class, despite the fact that homeroom hadn't even started. Had he always been a diligent student?

Theo frowned. He had been once. Why had he stopped?

...did he stop? No, obviously not. He was here.

He placed the required paperwork out on the table in front of him and set the books he would need for the lecture aside, then reclined in his chair to wait for the school bell. Despite his father telling him to be late, he never seemed to be. He was always so strict about time and promptness. Never being late. Never falling to meet or even exceed expectation.

Now, something about that felt completely on the mark.

He was completely sure of it now. This couldn't be real. The names, the faces, nothing jived with his memory. Everything he strained to remember felt somehow distorted. These were people he had never known, and yet somehow sitting here as they came filtering into the room, he felt like he had always known them. If he said anything out of the ordinary, though... who knows what might happen?

Theo was never one to break the rules. That was true in almost every reality. In this world, he didn't know the rules, so the logical course of events dictated that it was time for him to learn them.

...His eyes open.

Around him, a scene he all but forgotten. A computer. Posters. A couple figurines. This is... his room?

This can't be right...
And yet, the sensation of climbing out of bed felt so... real. What's going on here?

Noticing a backpack he had honestly forgotten about and a clock, Sean subconsciously started getting ready to head to school since apparently he would be late. Shower, get a fresh set of clothes on... Oh, don't forget to brush your hair and teeth. All things his mother would hammer into his head daily. Though... she isn't, today. Oddly enough, none of his family members have even shown up. They're probably already on their way to school and work. I should head out.

And so, he set out for school. The buildings that should've been all-too-familiar felt... foreign, at this point. Four years could do a lot, huh... Sean followed a path stuck in his memory through fears of tardiness, and of punishment. Left, left, right, le-

Something's off. I'm going right. The redhead turned on his heel and darted in the apparent opposite direction of the school... just to arrive at the entrance. Sighing... he entered. Right now, he wasn't the cool heroic swordsman...

He was back to being a loser nerd, just trying to blend into the crowd as best he can.

Opening her eyes, 'Magnolia' couldn't help but immediately feel something off, even if subconsciously. Her mind felt funny, her body felt... Strange. Something about moving felt off, and even the hustling of her bedsheets had a different touch. It was incredibly smooth, bizarrely perfect and artificial, lacking the humane touch on its weaving.

Her eyes, who were no longer the ones from before, took their time to adjust. She rubbed them, noticing her sight had a faint blur.

Despite that, it didn't take much for the woman to realize the room she was in didn't belong her master's estate. Much less that the reflection in front of her, from a wide mirror that was part of her wardrobe, looked... Fairly off.

bWwXTJy.jpg

Putting pieces together didn't take long, and at first, 'Magnolia' thought... Or rather, knew and was certain... It was just a dream. The ones that echoed in her mind, no matter how many years passed since this became an unreachable past.

Her hands tapped on her nightstand, one that she very lightly still knew that was supposed to be there, along with some eyedrops and contact lenses. The discomfort on her eyes was strangely realistic, and so it did the transation between a poor sight, to one that was pretty much crystal clear, making the vision she had of her mirror to actually distinguishable.

rowfu2Q.jpg

It was a sight that made her breathing pause, with her head tilting slightly so she could have a better angle of her face. Thanks to her elf nature, she was used to feel her dreams with great accuracy and details... But never it has been so... Tactile, palpable. She could feel the air entering her lungs every time her chest heaved.

"Petra! The breakfast is ready. Are you ready for school already?"

A yell echoed from downstairs, and 'Magnolia' peered at her bedroom's door, and then trailing at the shelves cramped with the endless books that had been her closest friends for years before she got stuck in the nightmare her most precious, fantasical dreams had became.

"Petra?!"

The yell came again, like a parent that had a hint of concern in their voice... Which slowly brought Magnolia to understand one thing...

Right now, she wasn't Magnolia. She was Petra.

"Coming."

She responded, still unsure if that was an illusion or some delusion she was having while asleep... But she was eager to find out, even if her expressions were as dead as they were in game.

6JUIZsP.jpg
It was silly, that despite nearly five years being the data Magnolia was, and being forced to learn how to live differently from how she lived back in real life, some habits didn't seem to die.

Knowing she was going to 'school', for whatever reason that the family-figure had urged her to go... Petra couldn't help but bring one fantasy book with her. A large one, that she held fondly against her chest, that both comforted her with an embrace and almost acted like a shield, as if at any moment she could simply hide behind it.

Without it, she felt vulnerable. Exposed. Naked.

As if it wasn't enough, as soon as she stepped into her classroom, her gaze locked on a seat she knew it was hers. She approached it, almost rapidly before she silently remained there, in the background and just part of the scenario.

She tucked some of her hair behind her ear, bothered about how long it was compared to Magnolia's.

Her feet tapped anxiously on the ground, and she opened her book, hoping that both of the covers were widen her cover, the one layer of defense she had with that scenario that, despite so many years, still made her chest feel tight, making it hard to even muster a proper breathing. With memories and instincts kicking in and troubling her mind, her gaze eventually averted from the books, scanning the room to see some of the individuals in the room.

On immediate, she could spot a dark haired boy, one that remained just as quiet as her, parted from the chattering of the class, from students that actually seemed to know each other as opposed to them. Another figure was a red haired classmate, that mixed into the classroom, also quiet, but somewhat lost, which intrigued the woman. An approaching girl almost made her heart leap out of her chest, and even if her face didn't show the surprise, she tried to hide the bottom half of her face behind it.

Those immediate sights brought some faith to her. Perhaps, she wasn't the only one...

Instinctively, she tried to send them a mental message, peeking from behind the book- But as soon as it didn't work, Petra took a deep breath and cursed internally, knowing she shouldn't have expected anything different... However, deep into her heart, she felt like there was one single thing she was still capable of.

Her eyes trailed back to them, and for a moment... She tried to feel what they felt, but in a way that went beyond empathy.

WOWZERS!

Kuin Wendi, shot up in her bed breathing heavily. What a dream! She rubbed her eyes with her hands and took a moment to make absolutely sure she was awake. Her body was shivering from fright even with her arms wrapped around her Sailor Lune doll. She closed her eyes and waited a few seconds to calm herself with her cheeks snuggling Sailor Lune, Sighing heavily she fell back onto the bed with a soft plop. Whew!

Funnily enough, she couldn't recall exactly what about the dream bothered her. It was becoming less of a concern as she became more awake. She was in high school now so being a big baby about weird dreams would make her less cool.

Being the perfect hall monitor required following the C.O.O.L. code!

Caring!
Oriented!!
Observant!!!
Leadership!!!!!

"Gee whiz. That was pretty weird."

The pinkette rose from her bed and opened her window to let in some much-needed fresh morning air. Her hair was pink and white and her dual colored eyes blink as she watched the birds fly off a nearby tree. They had really pretty wings. It was going to be a good day! Getting fully out of bed now, she grabbed her hairbrush and went to work.

A normal day.

From there Wendi would fall into her routine without anything to remind her of her startled awakening. She could smell a delicious breakfast! Her mom and dad both worked from home so they were always around! Her brother too was playing with Jotaro the family dog!

The perfectly normal everyday girl would find herself in the bathroom mirror now. It was important not to dally if she wanted to get to school like all of her friends! Who knew the terrible things that could happen without proper hall monitoring? What a scary thought!

"Hmm? Now which colors today?"

Wendi spoke to herself softly holding a pink and black ribbon. An orange one still sat on the counter. Looking at herself in the mirror. She worked on her hair. She had heterochromia from birth. That made her stick out from the other kids. So she decided to get some cool white in her hair to be more like an anime character. After all, she is pretty short for her age and that would only incentivize her more to do a good kawaii look! It's been years since she started doing that now... maybe. Definitely long enough to forget the first time. Regardless, the act of taking a kinda weird thing and making it cool beans was a good thing to do! Positivity is strength!

"Too... flashy?"

She tilted her head one way, then the other letting her short twintails swing. The ribbons had a good look. A look that fit and made her feel complete. Strange... she felt a lot of nostalgia but also... confusion. As if a part of her didn't understand. As if there was something completely new but entirely the same all at once. Wowzers this was silly beans!

Nothing is wrong here.

A bright smile crossed her face as she double-fist pumped with a serious expression. Hall Monitor Kuin Wendi is ready to make sure the halls are tidy and organized! Everyone can get to class on time and no running in the halls!!!!

Perfect!
Red and black today for hair
Orange will go on her hall monitor band later!

Pocketing it she checked her cell phone...

She was running late!!!!
A hall monitor can't be late! Class is just as important!!!!
Gosh, that dream slowed her down... this wouldn't do. Time to activate plan Hashiru Usagi!
Aka gotta go fast!!!!

Throwing together her school uniform she zipped past her parents and grabbed a piece of toast.

"Bwa mwam, bwa dwad!!!"

The door slammed behind her as she finished buttoning her jacket. Outside she runs to her bike. She always lived close to school so walking would be great for meeting friends but today was different. It was special! So being late sure wouldn't fit that specialness!

She hoisted her backpack and grabbed the handlebars with a look of determination. She peddled her way through the streets. Streets she knew so well. Store owners and landmarks. The town was always a tad grey. They all were things she knew. This path was one taken every day. Just this once Wendi was running a little late...

Everything is fine.

Her shoe hit the pavement as she reached her destination. The student/C.O.O.L. hall monitor/magical girl superfan, swallowed the last bit of toast. Then with a sigh of relief, she chained her bike and rushed into the school building

It has always been this way.

The class door was still open.... she could make it!!!

Wendi skidded to a stop. After catching her breath she finally entered the classroom.

Kuin Wendi is here for the roll call!"

Wendi is Wendi.

A lot of faces were here. The considerate girl always tried to remember other students even if they weren't close friends. If her memories told her then it must be true!

Hmmm, had she beaten anyone here? If not... she really did miss it by a nose. Taking a deep bow as an apology for the unnecessary outburst. Wendi dropped into her seat at the front of the class. It was important to pay attention to the teacher!

This is enough.

Rolls

Narrative Highlight: Kuin Wendi (Japanese naming for Wendy Ann Quinn) is happily living her life. The fact a strange dream woke her has passed and she is severely invested in the Morning Glory's reality. Since the foggy memories are seen as truth to her. I'm going to say she at least recognizes everyone else in this thread. Her role is a Hall Monitor (regardless if one exists or not, that's what she believes).

Something crawled under her skin but she couldn't quite tell what. Touching her face across the mirror didn't offer her any insight other than her own warmth caressing her cheeks, reminding her how life feels.

...Does this look okay?

One hoodie or the other, neither seemed to quite 'match'. With or without? How hard of a choice, but apparently less proved to be more, like some tend to say. Catching herself at different angles on the mirror didn't make her feel any better about it though, until a familiar set of hands held her by her shoulder and a smile she didn't have to turn around to notice showed up, right behind her copy in the glass.

Worrying over nothing again? Ain't schooldays chaotic enough for you?

The squeeze helped to extract some of that stress out of her system, like a professional massagist would to their clients. It was just another morning, but still- Just how happy she felt despite it being any other day terrified her.

Who's gonna worry if not me..?

She opted to smile and not tell instead. But they both knew what was going through her head right now. The headache wasn't kind enough to let Maria do the same, apparently.

You win then, I'll wait outside. Five minutes or I'm leaving though.

Erika singsongs her way out of the room, gently shutting the door.

With what backpack, dummy...

She sighed to herself, giving a final glance to the mirror as she picked both of their backpacks, punishment for being the last downstairs as per usual, according to their unwritten sisterly-rules at least

Family never quite connected with them, but to outright ignore one of them annoyed her a little more than usual, enough to not direct the word to them and leave with an empty stomach against better judgement. That and letting Erika take the lead down the streets didn't make her feel comfortable in the slightest. She couldn't quite pick it apart, despite the non-chalance her twin displayed.

Before she could give any extra thoughts a piece of her time, her arm stretched out like lightning and yanked Erika by the wrist, a gasp of surprise cutting through the air in her lungs as she ended close to Maria.

Mary..?

Erika opted to give her the benefit of the doubt, but concern riddled her features when silence fell over her sister, who could only stare at the road ahead like she's seen a ghost, focus regained once sounds weren't deafening any-longer, with a glare left upon her face.

You almost crossed on red.

To support her case, she pointed up to the traffic light, right as it turned back to green a few seconds after. Not like any cars were passing through at the moment.

Aaah I see... More awake than I gave you credit for. Thanks, but you still have to carry my backpack.

Being a hero never paid well anyways.

Maria shrugged, despite her reward being present on Erika's awareness. Just how lucky could she be? That mysterious little thing that affects every human out there, and just now it did for them. Either a miracle or yet again her twin's own favour with miss Fortune herself, they had made it right in time, or at least that's what her watch told her so.

Old fashioned but reliable. Easier than pulling out her phone at least...

Peace and quiet seemed to completely plummet once she scouted noisy pinks ahead of them, and unfortunately entering her same classroom and letting everyone know of her presence.

Yes, they know, Wendy.

Maria replied, as if her entrance or looks weren't striking enough for others to keep an eye for. At least, compared to the rest of the quiet group that is.

That's her way to say 'good morning'

Erika, always the socialite...

Fortunately, the rest of the kids present weren't ready to start a loud competition with Wendy. They all seemed reserved enough- Good, but that didn't make any difference on the twins's seats as the pair headed to the front-row. Easier to ignore their antics if she couldn't even look at them in the first place.

Background noise always helps. It's a bit too quiet, wouldn't you agree?

You are waiting for her, aren't you?

She's fun in the mornings. It's alright if you are jealous.

"Seigi, it's time to wake up."

Just five more minutes, please!... The bed was just sooooo super comfy!

...

ZFj7dEC.png
Seigi's eyed jolted open. The fabric pressing against her back was soft, the blanket wrapped around her body warm, and Mr. Wiggles the oversized Spaceypede serving as a hugging pillow was right beside her. She was... in a room. Her room? Raising up, the young girl rubbed her eyes. Countless actions figurines staring down at her from the shelve on the opposite side.

This was... a room? Her room. No. Yes. Their room? Whose room? The middle of the room had a clear cut in carpet, wallpaper, and general vibe. If anything, her half was tomboyish and the other just... a lot more girly.

"Where...?" She murmured to herself, her confused look landing on the Sailor Magi clock on the bedstand. It was five minutes before her alarm went off! But... why? "Urgh, I hate waking up minutes before the alarm rings." The blonde-haired girl complained to nobody in particular. Did she?

Annoyed, Seigi pressed the button that would skip the next alarm, and that is when she noticed. Her arms were... normal? No bandages. No void. Nothing creepy. Just, human skin? But... yeah, that was normal, so why did she feel so weirded out?! Clearly, whatever she felt must have been some weird shock from a dream... right?

Before she knew what was going on, the girl found herself changing into a uniform for school and walking down a pair of stairs. It felt strangely... nostalgic. The house, her house, was huge... though she could have sworn it used to be bigger, yet whatever fleeting thoughts kept entering her mind were washed away upon entering the open living room. The scent of fresh bread, eggs, and-
X7sXcHT.png

"Good Morning, Raina!" A faceless businessman who looked a bit out of place thanks to his many muscles looked up from a newspaper, greeting his daughter.
"Raina dear, did you sleep well?" A faceless woman put down a can of hot cocoa, her aura emitting a sort of motherly love.
"Is everything okay, Raina?" The concerned voice of a girl that looked a hundred times more feminine than Raina herself. Her face was like rays of sunshine.

"Sis..." Raina spoke, sounding unsure herself. "Yes?" The girl replied, ever smiling. "Sister..." Raina repeated, rubbing out some tears in her eyes. She must have still felt sleepy! Why did it feel like she didn't deserve... this? Whatever it was. Raina's mind felt exhausted and on guard, Yet she had no reason to. This was home, this was her loving family.

"What are you just standing around there for? Come. Breakfast is ready." Her father gestured to an empty seat, Raina gave him a happy nod.

Munch The bagel was not meat felt slightly off.
Slurp The hot cocoa was not alcohol tasted somewhat bland.

It was then that she also noticed that her mind felt incredible... clear? Sure, there was this fogginess. But somehow, deep down, Raina felt like something was missing. A sustained noise. A constant headache. Everlasting tinnitus. The absent of this was... normal. Yes, absolutely normal.

"Hey Papa, what do you do for work?" Raina asked, curious about it. Somehow she felt like it was a vital part of information because- "Shouldn't you get ready for school?" He replied. Well, he wasn't wrong! "Can you drive us?" Us? Her Guts and Effort told her, this was maybe the only time she'd get to talk with her dad! "Shouldn't you get ready for school?" Urm... yes. "Papa? Is everything okay?" - "Shouldn't you get ready for school." "Pa-" - "Raina!" Her sister cut in, already standing in the entrance hall. "If you don't hurry, we will be late!"

"Ah, right... I'm coming!"
With these words, Raina grabbed her school back and walked out their front door. Joining her sister on a walk to school! "Woah!" Raina was amazed at how one house looked more expensive than the last in their neighborhood. "So,-" Her sister's... name? "N...Nana!" Nanami? Nana! "We're going to the same school?"

Nanami looked confused at Raina for a moment, before smiling. "Of course. The same class even!" So were they twins? Why didn't Raina... wait, no. She remembered! Sort of. "Oohh... yes. We share a room because our parents want us to get along really well and... you, me... what was it again? British... English...." - "Irish Twins." Nanami corrected Raina. "But I'm the older one." And they were sorta world apart, too! Of course, Nanami was super duper awesome and all! But while Raina was a bit of a geek, Nanami was already such a lady!

They were supposed to not get along.

...
...
...

The school was just how she not remembered! While most students were faceless husks that she didn't mind, a few people stood out!

There was, of course, the super C.O.O.L. @Magi Heart! "Wendi!" Her bestest friend got a hug. "Have you...." Have you what? Why did she feel so relieved to see her best friend like that?

...seen the latest episode of Sailor Sun Redux yesterday?! AND WHAT SAILOR LUNE-

Nanami put her hands in front of Raina's mouth. "HMphpfmpf!" - "You may have very nearly spoilerd your friend there." Nanami spoke reason.

Nonetheless, there were also @Jin and @Sean Poteitoku, giving both the boys an oversized wave that she put her whole body into. "GUTEN MORGEN YOU TWO!" She spoke. Loud. Anime taught her that Guten Morgen meant good morning! And Japanese Anime seemed obsessed with German!

Then, there was @Magnolia. "Petra the most awesomest and beloved person, ever! Haveyoudonethehomeworkcanicopyitprettyplease?!" Petra was like the smartest of them! At least she looked the part. "Ouch!" Nanami gave Raina a slap on her back. "I told you three times yesterday to do your homework alone. Now suffer the consequences." - "Grmlgrml, worst sister ever." Defeated, Raina went to her seat right next to @Tick Tock.

"Hiiiii!!!!" Raina called out to the real twins. She... actually wasn't that close to them, but ever since the start of the year, Raina had set it her goal to befriend them cuz of that super mysterious mystery air around them! "How has your morning been? Mine has been wonderfully... wholesome? I had like, the wildest dream ever!" She spoke. Dream... yeah it was about...

"Are you okay?"

Nanami asked Petra with concern on her face, though her poker-face smile didn't change. Unlike Raina, Nanami sat at the back of the class.

Cycle 1 - ”Destroy to start anew.”
BGM - New Days

Morning Classes

“Alright... everyone, settle down!”

The homeroom teacher hurries into the room with a frantic expression. Mrs. Pöltl usually is, in fact - she’s only been a teacher for a few years and she’s always been a little scatterbrained.

Still, it’s been a while since she’s been late, and she seems oddly unkempt.

“W…Wendi, if you could start the day?”

She gestures to the pink-haired girl, the one responsible for the daily ritual of stand-bow-sit. Roll call proceeds shortly afterwards, It’s only afterwards that the day truly begins. Mrs. Pöltl squints down at her notes, then begins to speak.

“Now, while midterms are still… two months away, it’s never too early to begin studying…”

The morning announcements continue like this, one blurring into the other for the five minutes. Another stand-bow-sit, and she’s gone for the brief period before the next teacher comes in. Students gather into groups and chatter, “did you finish the homework” this and ”The latest episode of Kabuto Kid was great” that.

Time flows strangely. Classes with barely-remembered teachers pass in a blink, while breaks stretch like taffy. But this is how it’s always been, right? In fact, imagine how terrible it would be if things worked the other way around, long joyless stretches of education and lightning-fast moments to socialize.

There are those you know, with recognizable faces and names to put to them, but others seem to melt together in your memories. With a little effort you can pick out the significant faces from the crowd...

“What to do…”

A young man idly scrapes his desk as he stares out the window. His bottle-blonde hair stands out along with his mussed looking uniform. Keir Peck is the school’s premier troublemaker, and there are rumors that the teachers have a betting pool as to what kind of chaos he’ll be causing on any given day.

“Good morning, everyone!”

Several students gather around a cheerful looking boy with an easygoing smile. Raijin is the school's shining star.. Sports, grades, you name it, he seems to have it mastered. He's got quite a few fans, but there are just as many people who despise and envy his popularity.

“There's an answer, I know it…”

An empty space surrounds the pale-faced girl sitting in the back corner. She scribbles furiously in a tattered notebook as she mutters to herself. Mei Kawaguchi is the weirdo of the class and the self-proclaimed leader of the unofficial Occult Club. She’s more than happy to be ignored, but today she seems to be doing a lot of staring at all of you in particular.

They're just your classmates. There's nothing weird about some standing out more than others.

The feeling of something wrong builds, like something itching just beneath your skin. The incongruities continue to build - was the person sitting next to you a girl or a boy before? Are the words actually squirming across the chalkboard, or are you just tired? What is "Astorea", and why is the world history teacher talking about it with such a weird You don't have a world history class this semester.

It feels strange. Dreamlike. Like if you focus too hard on the feeling, you-

you are being watched.
against the window, coiling, scraping
damp streaks dragging across cracked glass
deeper deeper deeper deeper beneath you can

-feel it slip between your fingers. But in the wake of that feeling is an echo of memory. Power. As if you could reach out and make the world twist.

...but do you really want to? It's such a nice day, and you aren't in danger here.

Everything is fine.

Lucidity

Lucidity is a measure of your grasp on reality and the ability to exert your will on. As you gain Lucidity, you become better able to perceive abnormalities and remember the truth. Losing Lucidity causes you to sink deeper into your false memories.

You gain a point of Lucidity if you roll 85 or better on any dice roll. You may spend a point of Lucidity to change a 1d100 roll into a Mastery or Expertise roll.

If you drop to 0 Lucidity, your character is considered disabled and you will be unable to take any actions in the next cycle. Afterwards, your lucidity is set to 1.

Awareness
0/???

The measure of the world’s hostility towards you. Questioning the world and taking actions that break the plausibility of the scenario increase Awareness, which will make things more dangerous.

If you fail a check with a flat roll or succeed with a Mastery/Expertise check, the difference between your roll and the DC is added to Awareness. A Critical Success negates this gain.

If the Awareness meter reaches its maximum, you are found.

Actions

Interrogate
Some of these students seem more important than the rest. They might have some of the answers you seek.

Choose a named NPC and roll a 1d100. Each NPC has two DCs: one to get basic information, and one to get more in-depth answers. State which DC you're aiming for and what kind of information you're trying to get.

If you fail by more than 25, you unnerve your target and must roll future interactions with the character with Disadvantage. This can be negated by spending Lucidity or using the Alter action to make a Moderate change.

Mrs. Pöltl: DC 25/75
Keir: DC 50/75
Raijin: DC 25/100
Mei: DC 25/100

Explore
There are opportunities to slip out of class between breaks. Maybe you can find something interesting if you poke around.

Roll a 1d100. For each multiple of 25 you roll, you find higher

If you roll below 25, you get caught and must roll future attempts at exploration with Disadvantage. This can be removed by spending Lucidity or using the Alter action to make a Moderate change.

Alter
When has being passive accomplished anything? You have the power to bend the world to your whim - why not give it a try?

Declare if you are making a Minor, Moderate, or Major change, and describe what you're trying to do as a Narrative Action. Player characters and certain NPCs will be unaffected by these changes, and may be aware that something has changed depending on what you change.

Minor: (DC 25) Make a minor or immediate change, such as altering your appearance or the name people call you.
Moderate: (DC 50) Make a moderate or retroactive change, like altering your reputation or making people forget something you've done.
Major: (DC 75) Make a highly disruptive change that alters the environment, or show off your full might without regard for how people might react.

A successful change will create new opportunities you can exploit in future cycles. Any Awareness gained by using this option is doubled.

Play Along

There's no reason to draw attention, or you just don't think anything is wrong. Sometimes it's better to just go with the flow.

Roll 1d20. You reduce Awareness by that amount, and gain a point of Lucidity.

Traits

You can activate traits after rolling.

Jin - Investigation Mode
You still have access to your UI, limited as it is. You can gather additional information and avoid trouble in the process.

Spend 1 Lucidity. You gain advantage on Exploration actions.

Tick Tock - Twice
You are two. You can work together or split your efforts to great effect.

Spend 1 Lucidity. You can take two actions this turn, except for Play Along.

Magnolia - Painbearing
You can feel the pain lurking under the surface of others and ease it. And there's a lot of pain here.

Spend 1 Lucidity. You gain advantage on Interrogate actions.

Seigi - Guts and Effort
For better or worse, you've got a reputation in class. You can take advantage of that.

Spend 1 Lucidity. You negate any Awareness gained from your roll.

Sean - ???
Reach 5 Lucidity to unlock this trait...

Magi - ???
Reach 5 Lucidity to unlock this trait...

"W…Wendi, if you could start the day?"

"Of course sensei!"

Wendi led the morning stand-bow-sit ritual as usual. She was always so happy to be the one given such a privilege for her hard work and effort! Although she noticed that Mrs. Pöltl was bothered by something. If she had a rough morning, then it was up Wendi to ensure it didn't get any worse.

Caring!
Oriented!!
Observant!!!
Leadership!!!!!

Her eyes then caught sight of a certain boy. Someone she was sure she knew well. He was...
...
...
...
Who was this?

"Good morning, everyone!"

Raijin!♥

Wowzers, it was Raijin the star of N̵̘͗͜͝o̴̬̙͓̊̕ŗ̸̩̺͛m̴̛̟̎̒͐ä̶̧̧́l̶͙͛͌ ̴̣̺̬͉̒͐̿Ĥ̸͖̥͚î̷̻͚̝͋ģ̴̹͓̗̎̿̓̈́ḫ̵͍̫͒̿͛̋ ̶͇̖͌̌͌S̶͙͇͗͊̌̌ç̶͔͋́́h̸̞̼̳̰͐͛o̸͍̹̖̓͊͒̕o̷̧̝͛̀͝l̷̗̫͓̱͊̿̔ ̵͙͖̻͆̇̚͝N̷̰̋̀̃͜ä̷̡̳̩́̔m̴͍͚͑e̷̗̺̪͒! Kuin Wendi admired him! Well... maybe a little more than admired. He was like her, and strived to be the best student he could be! Not once in all her time here had she ever had to stop him in the halls! Funny... she recalled spending more time as a hall monitor than this day seemed to allow her... or maybe not. She did spend time in the halls?

Gee whiz she was being as silly as Reina now!

So the day went on. The pinkette spent all her time in each lesson focusing as much as she could on the teachers and their instruction. When some students mentioned history class, she shook her head and corrected them. Weren't they paying attention? That wasn't this semester!

Whenever there was a break Wendi did her best to make sure no one became rowdy! For a girl without much of an intimidating look, it may seem unlikely but Wendi was quite respected and when she raised her finger, the majority of students would understand immediately! The heterochromia and hair dye might be to thank for that... or her awesome C.O.O.L.ness! Resistance was so rare except for maybe Keir Peck! There had been times she had to take disciplinary action against him but he never learns!

...it's always been that way.

At some point (why was she starting to lose track of time?), she finally got a chance to speak to *cough*her highschool crush*, Raijin. It was lunchtime!

Wait what about Reina? Wasn't she the most important?
...
...
...
Maybe, but Raijin was ♥RAIJIN♥ and she can't get him out of her head! They were the same! They were striving to be the best inspiration to others they can! ...was that true? It must be... even though Wendi wasn't exactly sure what kind of person he was...nope! She knew him so well!

"Hi, Raijn-kun!"

Wendi couldn't help but blush as she sat near him and took a bite of the candied meat bowl her mother packed for her. The bowl had an elaborate design with pretty flowers (white, black, and red roses) engraved into it. He had a lot of others that were always vying for his attention.

...it's normal to want to hang out with others like you.

"Um... wowzers would you look at this meat bowl! It's amazing! What did you get for lunch? Would...you um... wanna taste a piece?♥"

She held a piece of meat in her chopsticks and showed him.

This is selfish.
What about Raina.
Is this what the real world was like?

Huh?

Whose Raina? Weird, Reina's right there eating lunch too right? She'll talk to her after school like always!

Wendi's face returned from a moment of blankness to focusing on what she was doing again.

Being normal.
Being happy.
T̷h̷i̴s̸ ̴i̷s̵ ̶e̸n̸o̶u̶g̷h̴.̵.

Narrative Highlight: Kuin Wendi leads the class stand-bow-sit ritual and goes on to be the best student she can be. Lucidity [ 1/5 ]

Everything is a blur, it is hard to notice and see anything with too much clarity... And whenever Petra thinks she has the grasp of what is going on, everything becomes foggy once again... It nearly panged a headache in her mind, and a sigh slipped her lips for it.

In a break, however, Petra couldn't help but notice the continuous glance of the Occult girl... Rei..? Jay..? Mei... But not only her, but on other figures too... Ironically... On figures that for whatever reason felt like they stood out even more than everyone else, even if they were mostly quiet by themselves such as Sean and Theo.

Petra couldn't help but feel something wrong about it, a thought that was momentarily disrupted by Wendi simping over Raijin, an understandable reaction, but... Find a room?

Wait, she was an adult right now, why was she thinking like some envious teenager?

Sighing internally, Petra half stood from her seat, only for her gaze lingered toward Nanami and Raina. They were nice enough to ask her if she was okay, so she figured she could muster a bit of her social energy to--

"Nanami, let's... catch up later? And Raina, I think you never gave me back my homework from last week." For some reason, that crossed her mind right now. Then, she returned her attention to the Occult girl, approaching while feeling a bit of herself slowly fading away... Or rather, changing, as she neared her, feeling her concerns and worries tingling her mind, even if she couldn't know exactly what they were.

Mei was by herself, which... felt a fairly natural sight... but for Petra, that was the perfect opportunity to inquire her. Especially after glancing so much at her.

"Hey..." Petra peeked in, sheepish, but at the same time having a hint of forcefulness in the end, with the last breath of Magnolia trying to push her further before she faltered and became foggy, right behind Petra's mind.

However, Petra was there, already with an intention. And this intention wasn't forgotten, even if to a conscious level, she forgot the reason she was so interested on what the girl was doing.

"Say, what are you writing about? Is it a story?" 'Why were you looking at me?' the question prickled her mind, making her confused, but insisting regardless- "Could... could you show me? I love reading." She asked, embracing the book tighter against her chest, and pursing her lips as she felt the fierce curiosity of the Occult girl crawled into Petra's skin as if it was of her own.

Stand.

Bow.

Sit.

As much as one could hope for an eventful day, it never came. The preamble was measured and scripted, and everything that came after it blended together. These were supposed to be the best years, the most exciting years of their lives. People talked about how the jocks and the preps peaked in High School- this was the iconic venue for that. These incredibly boring individuals had certainly reached their peak.

He watched with a passive expression as she walked away from the front, back to her desk. The only thing in this gods forsaken world that made the whole ordeal tolerable.

And just like every other time, she didn't see him.

"Good morning, everyone!"

It was him. It had always been him. Theo's eyes locked on the star student, the one person who was his antithesis in every way. He did the work, he followed all the rules, but unlike Theo, he stood out. He waltzed at the forefront of the social order and everyone fawned over him.

Wendi's eyes only saw Raijin.

This world is shit.

Every world is shit.

The words were loud and intense, and incredibly sudden. The moment he felt a modicum of hostility, of hatred for Raijin, something hit him like a ton of bricks, and Theo jolted upright, looking around. He swore someone had growled the words in his ear, but there was no one there. And even if there had been, who could have known exactly what he was thinking?

Disoriented, he looked at a few of the faces around him, who noticed his sudden fright and turned his gaze toward the floor. He passed his homework forward when it was called for, but otherwise, he did his best not to draw any more attention to himself. He could feel the embarrassment burning in his cheeks.

"Would...you um... wanna taste a piece?♥"

He felt his heart catch in his throat as he glanced up to see the object of his affection offering food to the beloved face of their class, holding out her chopsticks as if to feed him like a significant other. His knuckles went white as he gripped the sides of his desk, breathing slow and steady in order to contain the rage that threatened to break free of its fleshy prison.

IhateyouIhateyouIhateyouIhateyouIhateyouIhate-

Why get angry? the voice cut in suddenly. Its all been a pack of pretty lies. Why not use this opportunity to find the truth?

...what?

A voice without a source, unfamiliar to him, and yet it seemed to know his most intimate thoughts. Theo felt himself shaking; but now he was uncertain of whether it was anger or sudden fright. What was going on?

He stood up suddenly, his head bowed, and he spoke up. "Sensei, I need to use the restroom," he spoke quickly, barely waiting for approval to make his escape from the room. Something was wrong with all of this. He needed to get to the bottom of what was going on around him, why this place was so familiar, and yet, why it seemed so incredibly strange.

Rolls

Narrative Highlight: Theo doesn't take well to seeing the girl he likes flirting and hanging on another guy, and he thinks he's having a mental breakdown, so he asks to use the restroom- but in reality, he decides to get a better idea of what's going on by exploring.

Midterms are two months away.

Therefore, they don't matter. Sean's never studied in his life anyway.

Nevertheless, the redhead has a growing feeling in his gut that preemptive action could lead to disaster. Whoever designed this... simulation? This mockery of what he longs for... For now, it should not know that he is aware of the falsification of the reality he currently is a part of.

After all... this is the world Sean wishes to live in. A world with computers, with school... with regular people...

Without risking one's life on the daily. Without the madness of magic and martials.

A world of comfort.

...Do I really want to go back to my old life?

I finally have a chance to make an impact on those around me. Do I want to leave it behind to see my family again?

...Of course I do. But this... isn't where my family is.

...I will get to the bottom of this. I need to take it slow.

Everything was wͬrͥᵍoͪnͭg.
Raina knew that things weren't how they were meant to be. Yet, she couldn't quite put an answer to it. Something was there, floating at the edge of her mind. Something that made her way too conscious about the ever-shifting falseness of what was around. With the exception of a few individually chosen.

"OOHH!" She suddenly called out in the middle of the class. "I finally know what's wrong with this place!" Eyes on her. "... Time for classes is passing faster than usual!" Like, there was 'not-paying-attention-in-class-and-wait-until-the-bell-rings'-fast but then also 'that-but-even-faster'-fast which just seemed... not realistic! Though all it had given her was an extra exercise from their current teacher.

Yeah, she never liked Mrs. Pöltl!

...

"Homework?" Raina tilted her head in confusion as Petra spoke to her. "Last week...?" What sort of- but, of course! "UUhhh..." Petra was one of the few people who didn't seem so super weird and out of place! Like the rest of them. "I.. uh..." Her face wandered to @Magi Heart who was...

...doing what exactly?! Raina knew the girl for years, and they were besties! So in a way, she knew exactly what was going on! It was all written over Wendi's face! Hopefully, Raina didn't make any mean faces right now. Instead, she wondered what to do with the pinkette. By now Raina already had made herself a battle plan to get to the ground of this... unease!? But her Guts told her to leave Magi out of it! And Raina's gut feelings were NEVER wrong.

"It'll be fine..." She murmured. After all, Raijin was one of the face people, too! And he was reliable. And handsome. And super cool. And a prodigy. And the star of the show. And- "!??!!!?" Raina slammed her head against the desk. "Weird thoughts!" What the heck was she thinking?! Sighing, Raina pulled out a piece of paper, scribbled something down on it, and wandered over to @Magnolia . "Your homework!" Though the crumbled piece of paper had simply Be careful! written on it, and before Petra could respond/look at it, Raina was already gone!

"Nana-chan..." Raina poked Nanami from behind. "Mhm..?" - "I got an important mission to fulfill. Can you please keep an eye on Wendi?" - "Sure, make sure to stay safe. Raina~" Nanami smiled ever so softly. "You're the best!" Hopefully, she could trust her sister. With all of that taken care of, Raina finally excuses herself from the classroom to...

"...Huh? Are you following me?!" Stuck between the stairs of two floors, Raina turned to Erika(@Tick Tock) who was, evidently, there too! Well, she was one of the face-people, too. "Soo... you noticed too?" She asked, tilting her head. "But worry not! A wise person once said the number one spot to solve mysteries is the rooftop! That is if we aren't going to get stuck in some other mystery first. You need to keep your eyes out, maybe we're skipping a floor number! Or end up in an endless hallway! It's really spooky, isn't it?! But that's also what is exciting..." Good thing there was nobody else close.

"But say..." Raina continued walking. "We do know each other, yes?" It was like, they did. "It's like we do! But the memories seem to come just-in-time when I need them! Or maybe that is how memories work? I'm not really spending too much time thinking about how thinking works!"

Though her adventure was cut short upon discovering that the door that supposedly led to the rooftop was locked. "How dare-!" The blonde cursed in defiance. "Taking away an integral part of school life for... security reasons?!" Something she wouldn't, couldn't accept! If there was a locked door, there had to be a key, that's how it always worked! All they had to do was find it... "Or maybe break it? Or lockpick it! I know a Yootuber!" Though the door seemed sturdy...

Rolls

Narrative Highlight: Worrying about Wendi, Raina gives Petra a note telling her to be careful before going out of the class with Erika following her to get to the rooftop. That, however, is locked. So she is exploring/looking for a key or alternatively break/lockpick it.

Things had slowly begun to make sense. Just a little. The world had stopped making sense just minutes ago. As soon as this teacher of sorts begun to talk, her body begun to numb down a little, only to recover sensation seconds after.

In that moment, she felt a heart she didn't have, and her eyes met with a girl who didn't exist anymore, no matter how hard she wanted that to be the case. And the way Erika locked gazes with her... A smile that almost forced itself to be one. Apologetic, like somehow her twin found out earlier about the inconsistencies presented in this classroom.

Her heart sunk as hard as her smile did. Her sight darted over to the group of people she called 'schoolmates' and straight to her backpack behind her.

Erika...

She slid her cap on and grasped her pen, tapping it on her desk before handing it over to her twin. Yet she didn't let go of it, a worried frown resting on her features that made Erika nod and smile, a little more truthful about it this time.

Later, yes? I'm gonna miss my ride.

She tilted her head in direction of the troublemaker's general direction. Only then did Maria actually let go of the pen for her to have and turned her attention to the rest of the class, but not a single face seemed familiar to her, outside of Wendi and Troublemaker.

It wasn't hard to create a distraction for Erika. Their teacher was pretty clumsy all things considered if their first order of the day was to tell the noisy pinkette to do her job, or a part of it at least. All she had to do was slam her desk once in frustration and ceaselessly tap her pencil against her homework.

I can't believe it, I forgot my homework..!
.
.
.
.
That should do.

Her antics couldn't go unnoticed. No, at one point she would have to slip up, either by proximity or because her object of adoration would decide to look over her shoulder for once.

Good morning, Raina.

Erika smiled at her accusations, but that wouldn't last long as her 'friend' put the pieces together on her own. She finally made her approach a few steps closer, with one hand busy on her notepad and the other on the pen she was drawing with.

I did. But it looked like you could use a sidekick. Although, calling this all exciting..?

It never ceased to amuse her how difficult to read Raina could be at times. Instead of pondering too hard on the machinations behind that mind of hers, Erika giggled and sticked her tongue out at her.

Weirdo.

Yet she shrugged when questioned about them knowing eachother. Perhaps the mystery sounded better in her mind than it would to her peer. Yet she couldn't quite pinpoint when did they meet, why did they meet, or why she felt strongly compelled to tag along with her-- Her heart just told her to do it, and it defeated the tyrannical rule of the brain for once in a short lifetime.

Doesn't really matter if we are having fun. And neither should you think too hard about it. Thinking never did any good to anyone.

Erika shook her head. The concept of Raina thinking sounded preposterous, it would break down everything that makes Raina... Raina! No thoughts fit her better, kept her interesting, and it helped her spark inspiration to keep drawing her sketches, all the way until they were prived of the opportunity of a very stereotypical meeting at the rooftop.

First thought was to pick it open, but last resorts should be left as such rather than as the first option.

What an injustice. We are going to have to settle this straight before any other explorers are met with the same disappointing fate. Say, how about we backtrack a little? We either find the one with the keys, or we get into their lair and get something to pry the door open.

It was more fun this way. And it's always about the journey and not the destination.

Let's continue. I'm sure we will find plenty of ways to make the school an unsafe space.

Rolls

Narrative Highlight: Maria hands over a pen to Erika and creates a bit of a ruckus about not having done her homework a day earlier for today's class in order to create some space for her twin to get out of the classroom and stalk down @Seigi Ling Ling. When they both reached the locked door to the rooftop, Erika suggested backtracking to the first floors to either track down the Janitor or his room, where they might find something else to break in.

Erika's outburst causes Mrs. Pöltl to jump as she finishes up her morning announcements. She readjusts her glasses and turns her attention towards her.

"A-again? Erika, we've talked about this..."

She shakes her head, sounding disappointed.

"You should take things more seriously. T-there won't always be second chances."

The teacher gestures to her desk. Among the many things on it is a landline phone - truly a dinosaur in this modern age.

"You can use the phone to c-call your parents. They can drop it off in the office, and I'll bring it to you."

She sounds like she's done this for a dozen times before.

(You don't think you've forgotten your homework once.)

"Oh... Petra-chan."

Mei slams her book shut, looking up at Petra with wide eyes. The moment you make eye contact you feel something. Pain, but you can't pinpoint a cause, can't figure out why you feel so much from a person who seems entirely unaffected by it.

"I, um..."

She wrings her hands nervously, eyes darting side to side. Then she takes her notebook and slides it into her desk, out of Petra's sight.

"I, I'm sorry! I can't share! It's not safe!"

"They're always watching!"

A few people giggle in the class. Classic Mei, always paranoid, always coming up with wild theories. It's why no one takes her and her "club" seriously. If it weren't for the fact she was a passable student she wouldn't even have the club.

Mei squints at Petra, looking suspicious. Then she leans forward, her voice dropping to a whisper.

"But, if you really want to know the truth... you should come to Occult Club. We're meeting tonight. Where it's safe."

And she slides over a note, with a classroom number scribbled on it. Changing up where she has club is one of Mei's many peculiarities...

"Come alone. Make sure no one follows you. They could be anyone"

Raijin's smile is like watching the sun break out from between the clouds. He's truly earned his reputation as one of the school's finest.

"Would...you um... wanna taste a piece?♥"

"Oh, Wendi-chan! I'd love to, but..."

"I'm on a special diet, remember? I can't eat meat anymore."

He smile becomes apologetic, and oh it's terrible, but it's only a moment as he shakes his head and looks down at his own box of ████████. It's what he always brings to class, now that you think about it.

"It does smell great, though. You must have worked hard on it!"

Raijin complimented your cooking! It feels great, getting attention from the coolest kid in the school. All your friends are going to be so jealous! The good vibes you feel are powerful enough that you forget the strangeness of his lunchbox entirely.

(It is strange, though. The entire lunch period, you never actually see him eating.)

Between classes, Raijin approaches Sean with smile.

"Hey, Sean-kun! How's your study been going?"

He talks to you as casually as if you've done this a hundred times before. Raijin is everything you're not, and yet he's been nothing but kind to you. He's almost a friend, in that sense.

"I know it's been rough since they moved you to general education, but you've been doing really well! Remember, if you need any help studying, you can just ask."

The praise fills you with warmth. You have been working hard, haven't you? And you wouldn't have gotten this far without his help.

(What did he tutor you in? Can you remember a single session?)

"Hey, teach."

You can almost hear the class-wide sigh as Keir suddenly speaks up. The sound of scraping chalk stops as the English teacher pauses. "What is it, Peck-san?"

Keir scratches the back of his neck, expression neutral as he look at the chalkboard.

"This is English, right?"

"Yes, Peck-san."

"Cool. So why the kanji?"

The room goes silent for a moment. The teacher turns away from the kanji written on the board, looking at Keir with blank stare. Keir doesn't even bother to meet the teacher's eyes as he stares out the window.

"...please do not interrupt class again, Peck-san."

The teacher looks back to the English vocabulary written on the board. Keir sighs, his bored appearance returning as the teacher's mumbling resumes. There was never any kanji on the board - this is English class, after all.

But there was kanji there, before Keir spoke up. Something changed, and you all saw it happen.

Maria kicks up a fuss about her homework and earns a gentle scolding from Mrs. Pöltl. It creates enough of a distraction that she doesn't notice Erika leaving.

Mei is suspicious and paranoid, but has invited Petra to the Occult Club, where they can "safely" discuss things.

Raijin attempts to butter up Sean and Wendi, but something's odd. You can make an optional DC 93 check notice to memory manipulation. Alternatively, you may spend a Lucidity point to automatically succeed.

Keir interrupted the English teacher. There were never any kanji on the board.

Hallways
@Jin

The teacher gives Theo a long look when he asks to go to the bathroom. You should have gone during break, which is the standard teacher response, but he waves you out nonetheless.

The hallways are empty, lit by fluorescent light and sunlight through the windows. You know the way to the bathroom, of course, but that's obviously not your destination.

Almost immediately after veering off course, you encounter a hall monitor.

"Oh, Theo. Coming back from the water closet?"

She knows your name, but do you know her? You know she's a student here, but she's not in your class. You can't remember her name, either, but you've talked to her before, right?

And then... something flickers above her head for a moment.

██████ █████
❰ ██ / ██ ❱

And then it's gone, but the image of it lingers at the back of your mind. It looked almost exactly like a health bar, like you'd see in a video game. An enemy health bar, too, but... this is just a hall monitor. Annoying, especially if you want to snoop around during classes, but they aren't monsters or anything. They're just doing their job.

"Well, you should be getting back to class."

The hall monitor stares at Theo, waiting for him to get moving. Her attention follows him until she's out of sight entirely.

Theo explores the hallways and runs into a hall monitor. His Investigation Mode reveals an enemy health bar, whatever that could mean.

Janitor's Office
@Seigi Ling Ling, @Tick Tock

The ladder through the locked door taunts the three trying to get through it. It's all that stands between them and the freedom of the roof, and yet it doesn't budge despite their attempts to pick it.

The idea to find the janitor's office, however...

It's easy for Erika to track down the janitor's office, as if she's been to it a thousand times before. No hall monitors appear to block their path, and no teachers peek out of their classrooms to find them. It's almost too easy...

Unlike the door to the roof access, the door to the janitor's office doesn't take more than a little jostling to open up. The door squeaks slightly as it swings open, revealing a room that doesn't exist even in your warped and fragmented memories.

It's... oddly empty. The slightly ajar closet door and shelves lining the walls are empty of even the most basic cleaning supplies. No schedules or notes hang from the cork board. In fact, the only sign of light seems to be a desk half-covered in styrofoam caked in the dark brown of old, dried coffee.

You know this is the janitor's office. It said "Janitor" on the door. But it seems to be one only in name...

The door rattles behind you. There's a muttered swear as someone struggles with the door. It gives you both more than enough time to duck into a hiding place before it swings open and a man wearing a janitor's jumpsuit walks in.

"Why is my door the only one that ever jams..."

His name is... his name is...

...he's the janitor. Students don't talk to the janitor, so why would you know his name?

I guess I should fix it. But do I really need to? It'll figure itself out...

He sips from yet another styrofoam cup of coffee he's brought into the room, and stares at the blank corkboard above his desk. A ring of keys hangs on his belt. You might be able to nab them, or you could just sneak out while he's dissociating.

Or you could talk to him, but he's just the janitor. He's not important. You can ignore him.

(He looks familiar).

The Janitor has returned to his office, but doesn't notice that anyone broke in.
DC 50 to steal his keys.
DC 75 to have a fruitful conversation with the Janitor. If failed, no further checks may be made. If Lucidity is used to make this roll, ███ ██ ██ ███████.

Raina and Erika may choose to forego an action to help the other, giving them Advantage on their roll. (If Erika uses Twice, she may give themselves advantage).

You can leave the office without needing to roll and do any other action of your choice.

Awareness
26/200

Mei: DC 25/100 (1 failure)

7 successes

Lucidity [ 2/5 ]

< Continuing from Morning Glory's Comms >

Tucking the warning note from Raina into her pocket, Petra kept her opinions mostly to herself... That note was a life-savior, it did bring back some of her awareness of what was going on and she needed to get a hold of herself.

She carefully listened to Mei, tilting her head slightly at the mention of 'them'.

Petra instinctively glanced around, but not too much. What if 'they' noticed her trying to look for them, whoever 'they' were? Were they also responsible for all the pain she could feel in the air? It was almost suffocating... She would need to take a breather, eventually, but for now she needed to keep low profile.

Another note slipped to her hands, and suddenly she felt like she was into some sort of Mystery point-and-click game, where she needed to collect clues on rooms to figure out what was going on...

Wait, point-and-click game?

Petra took a deep breath, placing a hand on her head. No, there was no more point-and-click gaming for her, she was long dead. This weird situation was prickling her mind and returning her 'player' mindset, which was dangerous. It couldn't keep going like this, how four years of development of denial and eventually acceptance of being a data had turned into this?

"It is alright, Kawaguchi-san-" -san? "- I won't bring anyone else if you don't want to... But... I do have a... Friend that may be in danger of being seen as well. I will understand if you don't feel safe if I try to bring her, but if you don't mind..." Petra said, and allowed the girl to answer before giving a quick bow and stepping away to take her seat next to Sean, just in time to Raijin approaching with his 'friendly' talking.

It took a moment for her to realize it too, but... She didn't lunch yet, did she?

"Ah..."

Her stomach rumbled.

""Oh, Wendi-chan! I'd love to, but..."

"Gee whiz of course you would! You're so silly (and talented, and smart, and strong, and kind, and inspirational... and... and...) Raiji-kun?"

The dream from this morning. The odd things like other students misremembering names, classes, homework even... Reina is acting like this was some special get-together... Even though just this morning Wendi also felt today was special but now... maybe it was just how she was.

The thoughts didn't matter.... but.

"...this...is... wrong..."

I'm on a special diet, remember? I can't eat meat anymore."

"Wowzers how could I forget that! I'm so sorry, of course, you're so considerate to tell me! I need to do better! That's what the C. in C.O.O.L. is for, CONSIDERATE♥!"

The lunch box didn't matter.
It's wrong
It didn't matter.
This was just another day and this was who she was.

She didn't need to care for the whole world, for anyone else... just for her duties as hall monitor.
and doing her best to get Raijin's attention and get him to ask her out!

Love... is temporary. Especially when it's fake... such a ...different feeling.

It didn't matter.

"It does smell great, though. You must have worked hard on it!"

"Super C.O.O.L. beans yep! Lots of meat in my diet because..."

Reina didn't... Raina...

Just a good friend. She would see her later. She would tell her how good everything went today. They would...

They were stuck.
Yes, stuck being happy.
That's... a happy...

The feelings left again and even though ♥RAIJIN♥ didn't eat his lunch.. she was sure he did. Maybe Wendi was just too excited today for some reason. The desk she at felt a bit off suddenly. It was nothing. It wouldn't be good if she started acting like the others now, would it? It was her responsibility for... for... him. For herself too.

Selfish.
What happened to everyone? - C.O.O.L.
That's too much! You do good through inspiration and she was just a normal everyday teenager going to a... a... middl-

It didn't matter.

RAIJIN♥ set her right.

♥RAIJIN♥ - C.O.O.L. - This is Enough - ♥RAIJIN♥ - C.O.O.L - This is Enough - ♥RAIJIN♥

She wasn't even on the left side of the post anymore! This was right!

"You can use the phone to c-call your parents. They can drop it off in the office, and I'll bring it to you."

Parents... gee whiz how long had it been?

Years?
Wait no...
Wendi didn't only have a mother right?
Wait what about dad?

She bit her pen as she watched Maria.. no, Marya and Mrs. Pöltl (such a Japanese name...).
Maybe she should go see the nurse. Just in case. That would be responsible.

"Sensei? May I please be excused? I think I need to see the nurse? Maybe I should talk to my parents too. Just to let them know if the food I made might be bad and to not keep the leftovers. (didn't mom make it?) I'm not feeling all that well... maybe too much candied beef eheh!?"

Wendi couldn't help but look at ♥RAIJIN♥ and found herself giggling a bit harder in shame and of course to get his attention.
It was like... she had to...

"Wehihihi ♥!"

Sean would've loved to be unbothered. However, nothing is ever so simple. Raijin approaches, acting extremely friendly. He mentions studying and him helping get the redhead into general education classes...

I wasn't in normal classes ever, was I? I was still working on that when the incident happened... Plus, I never studied for anything...

...It's been years. I must've forgotten. I had at least SOME people I could call friends. I must have spent some time studying with one of them and gotten into regular classes right before the incident.

Considering how this entire situation exists in the first place, though... I should still be on guard.

Sean chuckles a bit, waving dismissively. "Alright, if I need any more help with my classes, I'll be sure to give you a call."

...Perhaps I can trust him enough to talk to him about what's going on... not now, though.

For now, I need to keep observing. Whoever, or whatever, is controlling this place, I should be able to spot if I keep a vigilant eye.

MID-CYCLE UPDATE - @Kuin Wendi

"O-oh... of course, Wendi."

"Raijin, please escort her to the nurse's office."

There's a moment where Raijin seems caught off guard. It passes quickly though, as he looks between the teacher and Wendi, then shrugs helplessly.

"Of course, Ms. Pöltl."

"Do you need any help walking, Wendi-chan? It wouldn't be good for you to fall."

There's something strained about his smile as he leads her towards the door. He almost seems to be in a hurry. And then-

MID-CYCLE UPDATE - @Sean Poteitoku

Sean itches. What starts as pins and needles becomes something sharper, like splinters under his skin. The urge to scratching is overwhelming. And the moment he submits to that urge-

his nails catch on something.

under his fingers, a tendril pulls away.

yellow and slender, curling up his arm. thorns twitch along it, still red with blood.

it slips from his fingers, retreats beneath his armor.

gone, but it's still there, itching itching itchi-

"Sean, you don't look well."

The teacher's voice startles Sean back to... reality? ...no, that's not right. Everything still feels real, just like it was in your memories. There's nothing on your arm.

The itching is gone, but the phantom of the impression remains. And for a moment, the world around him shifts-

"Raijin, could you take Sean to the nurse's office as well?"

"Reality" reasserts itself. The teacher looks concerned. Nothing is strange about her, and yet if he focuses, he can almost see-

Raijin gently pushes Sean towards the door. The homeroom teacher presses a hand to her face with a sigh. No flowers, no tendrils, just a regular human teacher with human worries.

"Thank you. Goodness, I hope there isn't something going around..."

Erika and Raina had no trouble finding the apparent Janitor's office. Or so the blonde thought. "This isn't right..." She murmured to Erika, carefully walking deeper into the room and taking a look around. "Nothing in this school is how it's supposed to be! Which I'd welcome, but, this one's in a bad way! I feel in constant disarray with my own COMMON SENSE. An unsettling hunch that everything is alright. Like drinking-poison-and-finding-that-okay somehow not-okay!"

Raina sighed, she just had about enough of this strange scenario! Was this some sort of lucid dream? She should just go back to grab Wendy and get the hell out of here! Because Wendy was... she was... she couldn't quite say. "...!" About to explain the mystery of her own mind to her white-haired ally further, she instead noticed how a third individual wanted to enter the room. "Watch out!"

Thud

Raina tackled Erika and pulled her in a tight hug before doing a small roll mid-air, essentially switching their sides as they disappeared behind the conveniently placed middle-of-the-room desk. An overly dramatic move of actions that resulted in her being sandwiched between the hard floor and Erika on top. A heroic save that was also genre-abiding!

On the ground, the girls could feel each other's heartbeat as Raina, even in that form, radiated her ever-present warmth of comfort and justice! Only further amplified by her face turning slightly crimson, as in an alternate scenario Raina would wonder if her cinnamon-orange body odor was truly of that scent?!

"Ahem..." Though here, she was rather unaware to the fact. Allowing only a glimpse into potential fan service, she probably had anything but THAT in mind. There was a world to save, and so on! "Are you hurt?" Raina instead whispered, genuinely worried as she tried to somewhat free herself from the weight on top of her.

Succeeding in that, she now had to wonder why they were even hiding when-

"JANITOR!"
The heck was Raina doing!?

Her voice echoed through the room. She didn't do it on purpose, but rather pure instinct, as she timed her appearance so that the purple-haired entity of infinite wisdom couldn't quite tell if Raina had been in hiding, or just entered after him.

"W- I have questions!" There was some form of respect in Raina's voice, like a form of acknowledgment that she spoke with a being of grander existence!... For now.

"Why is the JANITOR's office so not-janitor-like?"
"Why is the rooftop locked?"

"Why does time feel like it doesn't matter?"
"Why are there NPC st- FACELESS students but some have been given PERSONALITY?"
"Why do things that are supposed to be WRONG feel RIGHT?"

"What do you mean with 'it sorts itself out?' and why am I-"
A stinging sensation hit her head as she was just about to say something fundamentally ʷrͬiͦᶰgᵍht.

"And, yeah, why that? Just what is going on?! I need answers to questions that I don't know the question too! Hmpf." At this point, Raina would have asked the very same questions about any character that had a face that didn't scream NPC! Being honest and straightforward was, after all, the only way to live!

Despite Raina's words, they sounded incredibly charming and likable! Maybe she was a celebrity in this life?! "Also hi! I'm Raina... Ling... Raythean?" Adding the introductions at the very end.
