Kat sat on one of the rooftops in one of the houses in Honeyhome. She had been watching the adventurers coming and going for an hour or so though, nobody had looked like an especially ripe target. She munched on a basic bun, the look on her face annoyed considering she couldn't taste it. She liked being a Magia, she just hated that one thing. She kicked her feet off the side of the roof, staring at the people running around living their lives. Being a thief was hard, especially in such a busy starter area. But Kat was determined that's exactly what she needed to deal with to get better.

She popped the rest of the bun into her mouth, and as she chewed thoughtfully Kat saw her. A small child with a small gold pouch hanging from her waist. It didn't look like it was filled with much, but it looked like the girl was so zoned out that she might prove an easy target. Kat clambered up onto the roof so she couldn't be seen, and the sunset was providing just the shadows she needed to steal the money. Kat giggled, activated her shadow arts in the girl's shadow, and quickly threw a dart, slicing the pouch from her waist down to the ground below. But when the pouch hit the ground it sunk into the ground as if it had just fallen into a pool of goop. After sinking completely into the ground, Kat smiled as it popped out right next to her in her own shadows on the rooftop. She loved that trick, and as she looked at the ground below it looked like nobody nearby had noticed.

She watched and waited to see if the girl down below would notice herself. If not, it was a perfect crime. Kat idly opened the coin pouch, but not a whole lot was inside. But some was better than none, and Kat had to start somewhere. All the rest of the adventurers passing through looked like they could turn Kat into a paste. But this girl looked just as green as she was.

The unsuspecting victim of the crime described above continued down what she mentally referred to as an avenue, as she didn't really have a visual reference to tell her otherwise. What she did have a reference of was the sweet smell of cinnamon buns, and that told her two things: it was around sunset, since this world was a lot more traditional about what a dinner time was, and she should get something to eat.

Azykia had come to face her blindness head on by now. She was scared. Genuinely terrified of taking one wrong step down a hole and ending her whole run. Her player was a contrarian though, and always tried to turn the bad in things into the good. That was why she pressed herself on her lack of confidence constantly, counting her steps and measuring them with a grace she had never even attempted to compare to in her previous life. That was why after days spent in this one small town, she could walk about without advertising to everyone that she was defenseless.

That was until building locations were involved. It wasn't as though she had a need to visit every location every day, so it was hard to have the excuse of keeping each of them mapped out in full. That was the reason, now that it was time to find that cinnamon bun stand, that she created a staff of blue magic using what little Arcanamancy she could scrounge up an understanding of this early on.

Wait... That wasn't a staff. It was a cane. A walking stick.

She approached the stand slowly, and anyone worth half their weight in human decency moved out of the way as she approached the lineless stall. "Is this the cinnamon bun stall? May I have one, please?" She reached down to her waist and felt around. Then she kept feeling around. The cane disappeared and she began to feel out her entire outfit. "Eh? W-Wait, I should have had ten gold left over. Just-" She looked in the general direction of the stall's operator, giving an embarrassed smile. "My apologies, give me a bit to retrace my steps." She felt awful saying something like that. Asking these people of the game world to have patience for her own incompetence. That wasn't how life worked. And yet it now was.

She began to walk away from the stall slowly, flipping out a magical cane again as she scanned the area twice as slowly as before.

Kat giggled uncontrollably as the girl just kept right on walking as if nothing had happened. She had no idea! Kat had done it!

But then, Kat watched her do it. Kat watched her pull out a magical walking stick, using it similarly to how she had seen people use those red and white canes in real life. And then it dawned on Kat that she had stolen from a blind girl. It was no wonder she hadn't noticed. Kat's robot blood ran cold in her body, and a cold sweat formed on her body. How terrible could Kat have been to steal from the handicapped?

Watching a little longer, she saw the girl walk up to the cinnamon bun stall, look for her money, and then realize it wasn't there. Blind, hungry, and now unable to find her money no matter how hard she tried, this girl was about to have her entire night ruined. And all because Kat was being a greedy little jerk. Kat frowned, not even her overtuned joy could overcome this type of regret.

Kat looked at the pouch she had taken, at the paltry gold she had taken. This girl had been relying on this gold for dinner. Kat really had to pick her targets with a bit more care if she was just going to steal gold like it was nothing. Kat wasn't a terrible person, she had just wanted to practice. But here she was, having the worst guilt trip of her life over who she had picked as a target.

With a heavy sigh, Kat closed up the bag of gold and used the same shadow trick to pop it back down to the girl, right in front of where she was about to walk. She hoped she'd see it or hit it with her cane. She didn't want to be that kind of thief.

As she heard some sort of clank, she froze in place for a moment to tune in to which direction it had come from and began to brush her cane across the ground in that general direction, until she felt it but a foot in front of her on the ground. Equal parts elated and relieved, Azykia began to laugh almost hysterically for a second as she scooped the small satchel up into her hands and felt the coins through the exterior. "I can't believe how stupid I am, ahahahaha...! I'll make sure to check my belongings more often!" She scolded herself aloud.

She truly was grateful this loss of money ended the way it did, and that this was the sort of lesson she could learn early on into this new life of hers. To have an impairment doesn't mean to let the river of fate push you every which way, but to adapt to its chaotic flow with more effort. She had to remember that from here on out, and she would begin by finding a way to keep her belongings in better care. She had already committed to using her magic to help her get around by making a cane out of it. Maybe if she tied the bag to herself with magic, she would be able to keep better track of it. Maybe she could find another Arcanamancer and ask if they had any ideas on how to do that without blowing through all of her magic.

Another time. For now, she had her coins in clutch, and it was time to grab that prize. One hand clutched her means of payment, and the other held out the cane as she headed back to the stand. As the smell of cinnamon sweetly suffocated her, she knew she was close enough to speak. "Sorry about that, I'm back!"

And what followed was a short exchange after another patron in which she finally received the greatest treasure of her new life: the fabled <Cinnamon Bun>, which she finally sat on a nearby fencepost to sink her teeth into.

Kat sat on her stomach watching the girl find her coin pouch, and happily make her way back to the cinnamon bun stand. Kat wasn't hungry, at least not according to her food bar, but she could smell the cinnamon and she so desperately wanted to be able to eat one. But she knew she wouldn't be able to taste it. She groaned as the smell made her stomach rumble for absolutely no reason. According to the UI, she just wasn't hungry.

Kat watched the girl head over to sit and eat her prize, and couldn't help the pang of jealousy that ran through her. She wanted to eat a cinnamon bun. And Kat had the money for it, that wasn't the issue. But it just wouldn't be the same. But wait, what if the girl told her what it tasted like? Kat thought about this, it sounded a little weird and creepy, but what if Kat helped her get around town or something in exchange for the description? Kat was so desperate for anything at this point. The smell was too strong. Kat was certain they had to use the namesake honey in that cinnamon bun, based on the smell. But she just had to know what it tasted like. She had to.

Kat flipped herself off the roof down to the ground below, sticking the landing pretty cleanly, before rushing over to where the girl sat and ate. She didn't want to startle her, but she wasn't sure how else to approach a blind person without startling them besides just saying hello. So she sat on the fence next to her, and just figured she'd give it a shot.

"Hi! I, uh, I'm sorry this is kinda weird and out of the blue. But I saw you got a cinnamon bun."

The more Kat thought about this, the more she couldn't think of how to ask this without being extremely weird about it. Probably best to just go for it, she guessed, weird or not. What could the girl do, ignore her? Tell her to leave? It's not like what Kat was doing was criminal. That time had passed.

"Couldyoupleasetellmewhatthattasteslike?"

She blurted it out as quickly as possible before she could stop herself from asking altogether. The girl couldn't see the grimace that formed on Kat's face from her asking the question. At least there was that.

Whatever it tasted like, Azykia seemed to be enjoying it enough to hum in delight as she took the first bite. She wasn't in any rush to swallow or get another bite in though, as one of the very few upsides to not being able to see was that her other senses were all halfway in overdrive. She could taste like never before, as each ingredient layered and separated over her palate and tongue. She had her prize, and was now sensibly dissecting it.

The blind girl did indeed flinch as she was suddenly spoken to by someone she considered right next to her out of nowhere just as she swallowed. She turned her head in the general direction of the woman next to her, cocking her head at her very sudden and seemingly urgent question.

"... Huh?" She cleared her throat and gulped, as the dessert had made her saliva thick and somewhat unbearable to notice now that she had. Afterwards she paused for a moment, then calmly turned back to her cinnamon bun. Assuming a normal conversation with basic manners applied, the progression here was obvious.

"Did you want some? I could give you half."

Kat was seriously regretting being a Magia, but only right this moment. As she watched the girl eat the cinnamon bun with the amount of delight that was written all over her face, the hum coming from her lips, it was eating away at her. Kat groaned lightly as the girl seemed more than a little confused by the question she had asked, and Kat really didn't blame her. If some random person just walked up to Kat and asked her about something like that, she'd tell them to buzz off so she could eat in peace. But here Kat was doing exactly that to someone else. But it was out of sheer desperation. It smelled so good. It had to taste amazing.

When the girl offered some to Kat, she cringed a little. How much Kat wanted to say yes. To savor the sweet flavor of the pastry. But all the girl got in response from Kat was a light sigh, trying her best not to make the pain of that question completely obvious.

"I appreciate the offer. But... I'm a Magia, I can't taste it. I wouldn't want to take food that you enjoy for nothing. My hunger meter is full."

Kat smiled, figuring honesty was the best policy here, and while she did feel a little weird just watching someone eat, she didn't feel nearly as bad as if she had kept the money she had taken from her. At least with the return of the coins, this girl got a cinnamon bun and Kat got to live vicariously through her.

"Here, let's start over."

Kat said, realizing that she had just come up and barged into this girl's life with no warning, rhyme, or reason, outside of being a creeper.

"My name is Kat. What is your name?"

Magia? She had heard something about that before. Wasn't that one of the player races? She couldn't remember which, but having no sense of taste was a complaint she didn't expect to receive today. She opened her mouth to speak just as the Magia spoke of starting over. Introduction time! Every time she had to introduce herself, she felt like she had to do it different from the last time. Or perhaps it was more like, none of the ways she had done so in the past felt right to her.

"Azykia. It's nice to meet you, Kat." She gave a smile to the former thief's general vicinity, where her pupil-less eyes stared all the way through everything to the edge of town, if anywhere at all. "So you wanted me to describe how this tastes because you can't taste it?" She held it out a couple inches closer to Kat. "Then, would you tell me what it looks like? Because I can't see it." She giggled just a bit, trying to move the atmosphere away from focusing on what the two didn't have, and more towards the unique memory they could create because of it. Making the best out of the worst, Azykia swore to do this if nothing else.

Kat smiled, glad things were going in a much better direction than if she had been a greedy little thief. She happily kicked her feet, thankful for this second chance to meet this girl in a better position. Kat did find it a little strange when she asked her to describe what it looked like, but when she thought about how hypocritical that thought was, she cut it short. She shook her head at herself and smiled.

Kat looked over the cinnamon roll, trying to think of how best to describe the pastry. She knew what a cinnamon bun looked like of course, but she wasn't sure if the girl had ever actually seen one. Even as a player of the game, she could be blind in the real world too. This might be her first chance to ever really experience what a cinnamon bun looked like!

Of course, it would have been easier if she could hold it in her hands, but she didn't want to be rude and just take it from the girl. So she did her best, trying to think of the best words to choose with what she had to work with.

"Well, it looks very flaky. The outside is crispy and appears to be crumbling as you touch it. The center looks very gooey, and it's shaped in a swirl. It was round, but now there's a bite mark in it from where you ate it, and there is what looks like honey and frosting dripping from the center where there used to be the cinnamon bun. The frosting covers the top and has melted into the bread that makes up the bun part, and cinnamon and sugar are spread thick between the layers of the spiral, holding it all together."

Kat giggled at her description. Maybe she should have been a writer, it was so vivid in her mind! She hoped it would work for the girl she sat across from on the fence as well, and that in return she'd keep up her end of the bargain and explain what it tasted like. It looked so heavenly, it had to taste heavenly too! And she didn't even have to describe the smell, oh the smell! They could both smell how delectable it smelled. Despite it all, her mouth watered, tasteless though it may have been. It was so annoying that they built this into the Magia race. She knew robots didn't really need to eat but they didn't need to take it this far!

Despite the fact Azykia had already taken a bite, by the end of this other person's description of the hard-earned treat in her hands, she had begun drooling a bit. Drooling of all things. She had never drooled before in either lifetime, but both her sense of taste and smell were so acute from not being able to see that it was understandable that she was. She softly sucked at her lower lip and gulped. "Al-... Alright, I think I need another taste before I can properly describe it..." She was telling the truth, but she would have lied about it just to get another bite even if she didn't.

As the blind blonde bit into the bun, it squished near the point of impact, showing its perfect gooey-to-fluffy ratio to the one in the fence duo who could actually see it.

"Mmmmm~" She didn't mean to flaunt her sense of taste in this poor other girl's face, but perhaps she was also to blame for making her mental image of it look so appetizing. Either way, they both had something different to enjoy in this moment.

"It's definitely honey, and even though the insides of the roll taste the most like cinnamon, it seems like there's also a little bit in the icing. The bun itself, could it be... brown sugar? With just a hint of..." She giggled, licking her lips a little bit afterwards. "Well, I never learned to bake, but you know how sometimes a fresh loaf of bread can taste sweet without being sugary at all, in that way only bread can? That taste persists all the way through, from the initial hit of sugar and cinnamon to the end where the honey and the bun's own sugar wrap the overall taste into several different layers tickling the whole palate at once."

With a grin, she offered the bun to her current companion. "But understanding the texture is just as important when doing a tasting. You can feel it in your mouth still, isn't that right?"

Once again the bun was offered, and it almost felt like she was being teased. She knew that wasn't the intention, and she couldn't fault the logic. She just knew that she wouldn't be able to taste the flavors, and that soured the experience a lot. But, Azzy had a point, and she would consider it for a moment longer before agreeing.

She took the bun and considered how best to go about this. On one hand, she could enjoy the crispy flaky texture of the outside, but on the other hand, she could go for the gooey center. She decided for a run at both, by taking the bun and biting it from the corner of where Azzy had taken a bite. Disgruntled at first at the extreme lack of any taste in her mouth, she sighed but was trying her best to enjoy it as this girl wanted. She closed her eyes and did her best to focus on the textures, the soft bread, and crumbly cinnamon and frosting, running almost completely counter to each other, with a little bit of crisp on the outside of the bread, just enough to satisfy that texture as well.

She opened her eyes and smiled, holding the bun back out to Azzy, before remembering she couldn't see that, and then gently taking her hand and placing the bun in it.

"Okay, I admit. That sucked way less than when I was eating things before. It still wasn't great, but it certainly was better. Thank you for the idea."

Azykia couldn't help but to flinch a little bit when she was touched all of a sudden, even if she was being handled with care. She couldn't really help it. Anyone would do the same, she figured, but it still felt rude to do even as an unstoppable reflex.

She took the bun in hand and waited an extra few seconds after Kat would have let go of it to even try moving her hand again, which she did so gently just in case of obstruction. She gave a slightly toothy grin for a moment before it dulled back down to a simple and polite smile. "Likewise, actually. It's strange how intact my mind's eye is after going days at a time without seeing anything lately." She carefully raised the bun up to her face and took a moment to let her sharpened sense of smell have a turn to enjoy this one simple treat turned blessing in edible form.

Then she full paused for a few seconds as she stopped to contemplate if this girl had torn off a piece or taken a bite straight from it as she squished it gently to get an idea of its general form at the moment. Unlike her flinching, the roadblock she found herself at was a bit unique. It might even put on display just what kind of life she lived outside the game, but she had to bring it up.

The younger girl lowered the bun and held it with one hand as the other came up to her mouth with a finger loosely curled in front of her lips. "Um... May I ask-" She tilted her head slightly to the left and glanced away in the same direction. "Is it... safe to eat after someone else if they aren't related to you?"

Kat was legitimately a little surprised by the question. She tilted her head and considered it for a second, wondering to herself. She had stolen bites of food from Ryou all the time, and of course, they had kissed. So it wasn't really something Kat ever worried about. Certainly, this girl was a stranger, and Kat was not intimately associated with her, but if Ryou hadn't poisoned her, she didn't see why this girl would, and so she had thought nothing of it when she had taken her own bite.

Kat idly wondered how young this girl was, perhaps not even just in the game, as she looked very young here in TerraSphere, but also outside of it. A young girl still confused about things such as kooties. Kat chuckled lightly, before finally deciding to tackle an actual answer for her.

"It is very unlikely that taking a bite after me is going to do any real lasting harm to you. But, if you really want to feel better, remember I'm a robot. I doubt a robot would have germs that would hurt someone."

Kat giggled again, hoping that if the first answer wasn't good enough, the second answer was. Although, she could press a little harder...

"Of course, if you're really that bothered, you could just give the absolutely delectable cinnamon roll back to me. But it would be such a waste, honestly."

Kat giggled one more time, her legs swinging on the fence they sat on, as she eagerly awaited the girl's further reaction.

The girl made an astounding point. A robot wouldn't have germs. Furthermore, this caused a spark of realization within her that a magia was a robot. The lack of a sense of taste made a lot more sense all of a sudden, but didn't explain having a sense of smell or feel still. Even so, Kat had more than talked her out of her concerns, leaving her to wonder why she had been so anxious about it in the first place
as she sunk her teeth in for another bite.

She let out another gleeful hum. It truly was unfair just how delicious this one simple treat could be, especially with a heightened sense of taste such as her own. After a long time spent savoring her bite yet again, slowly but surely she finally drifted back down to reality, where she paused momentarily to strike up more conversation. It was so nice having someone to talk to over dinner for once.

"My apologies for imposing with such a question, but what made you start playing Terrasphere? You don't have to answer if it's too personal, of course."

Kat watched as the girl took another bite with muted jealousy. She didn't want to dislike the girl for the fact that she could taste, but she certainly was frustrated by it, that was no secret. She looked to be absolutely savoring the pastry with absolute delight. Honestly, it was decided, that she'd have to see if she could find a cinnamon bun in Japan. Not that it would be an uncommon delight in Tokyo, but it was certainly something that she had never considered going out of her way for until now.

When the girl asked her about TerraSphere, Kat tilted her head again, her finger coming up to her chin, tapping it thoughtfully.

"Honestly? Heard about it on the news, and my girlfriend talked about it. I'm a contrarian, so when she told me it was not safe to play, I had to try it. Eventually convinced her to try it too, not that she's super thrilled. Hoping to change that soon."

Kat frowned a little, Ryou had been fairly distant about the idea. Though, she really couldn't blame her in general after the battle they had over the VR adapters in the first place. But she did say she'd try it, so Kat tried her best not to worry too much.

"What about you? Why play TerraSphere? And more importantly, I guess, why play it blind? Are you blind in real life?"

Perhaps it was too personal, but while the girl was being very respectful of Kat's boundaries, Kat had never really been all that good at that, and really, seemed none the wiser, as she just continued to watch the girl and her pastry, with Kat swinging her legs excitedly.

It was on the news? That was news to Azykia.
That wasn't really the important part to listen to, though. For starters, this woman had a girlfriend. Just as the magia had no ill will towards Azykia for having a sense of taste, the younger girl couldn't help but to feel a pit of jealousy turning in her stomach at hearing about Kat's successful love life. It wasn't as though she wanted to spent the entire rest of her life alone and single, but there were many walls to break down between her and her personal motivations in the first place.

The latter of which suddenly came into question, almost breaking her out of the spell of envy she had been under just before then. The smile on her face dimmed into a thoughtful look, then a lesser and more polite smile. How much she should say to someone about her motivations was always a toss up, and for some reason it was more difficult to gauge how much to expatiate upon herself with this woman than most any other she had spoken with about it so far.

"I suppose... Hm. Well, if I had to give a simple answer, it would be boredom. As for the lack of sight, that was..."

She laughed momentarily for effect.

"It was unintentional. I made my character by clicking randomize for every option to disadvantage myself. Variety is the spice of life, after all. I was simply unaware that one of the traits one could choose to take while creating my character was losing your sight in exchange for 'magic sight'."

Kat continued to tilt her head thoughtfully as the girl explained her, loosely put, motivations. She didn't even remember seeing a randomization button, but then again, all Kat really wanted to do anyway was make the character look like her. So randomization wouldn't have interested her in the slightest. Kat remembered sitting in the white room, making a Magia that looked twice as cute as her real-life self, younger, and popped her down to almost the minimum size for that maximum adorable factor.

"That seems... extreme."

Kat admitted, in response to the answer to Kat's question.

"Did you know that when you made your character you couldn't make changes or make a new character? I didn't know that at first, but that's why I didn't do anything crazy like what you did."

Kat had always ended up making other characters in these VR games because Kat liked to play dress-up and be cute. She had a tendency to play the more "second life" style games before TerraSphere, which usually made Ryou a lot happier. Honestly, if the news hadn't talked about how "dangerous" this game was, Kat would have never touched it otherwise. She wasn't an adventurer or thrill seeker like most players who played these types of games.

"What happens when the blindness gets too dangerous? Like say, what happens if someone steals your money and you don't notice?"

Sure, Kat was basically outing herself, but she said it hopefully with enough cheer and charm that she hoped Azzy wouldn't catch onto the idea that she was the one who stole her money. Or that her money had even been stolen, to begin with. But if she did, well, it was Kat's own fault in the first place.

"I'm afraid I didn't hear anything of the sort. I mostly only heard that it was like being able to escape reality, and that's all it took for me." She didn't let her smile falter, though she realized too late that she had said too much. The last thing she wanted to do was unload her troubles in reality on this stranger after she just asked what a cinnamon bun tasted like. It was a strange butterfly effect, how discussions with the kinder people of Terrasphere could morph into this or that after even a simple question shared between the two.

She had to remain vigilant against it.

"If somebody stole my money? Well... I actually have an idea." She moved the last couple-bites-worth of dessert to her left hand, then spun her right index finger around in the air. A bright blue string made of magic curled around her finger then hung loosely from it as she held it gently between finger and thumb. She then held it between the two.

"I almost lost my money a few minutes ago, so I decided it'd be smart of me to try and sew anything important onto my outfit. If I use Ar-can-a-mancy," she struggled to say this word clearly still, which really made her seem more her age for a moment, "then when I need to take it off of my person, I can dismiss the string and resew it back on when I'm done!" She seemed just a touch proud of her idea, despite her next addition. "Although, I'd have to learn how to sew, first."

For a moment, Kat couldn't believe that she was basically about to get away with the crime scot-free. The girl didn't seem to have any idea that the money had been stolen and that Kat could have been the culprit. Instinctively she smiled and hid the smile behind her hand like a child who just got away with stealing a cookie from the cookie jar and their parents being none the wiser. But then Kat remembered that the girl was blind and simply put her hand back on the fence to keep herself upright on the thin wood slat that supported her.

After this moment of euphoria, she listened to Azzy explain the solution to her problem and cocked her head. Kat knew little to nothing about magic in this game and was finding it hard to understand how you could use magic as threading. But she supposed that the concept seemed in theory. Though stuff like this was always better left to people smarter than Kat.

"I do know how to sew. I learned it from my mom. She taught me how to make my own kimonos when I was younger because I fell in love with them, and it was cheaper to make than to buy them premade."

Kat swung her feet on the fence and looked out into the forest. How was she going to teach a blind girl how to sew though? Then Kat remembered that she had said it was a magic sight. If Kat understood correctly, that meant she could see magic, and thus the threads! It was all coming together for Kat!

"If you use the magic thread I can show you how to do it! We just need a needle! How long does the thread last? Forever?"

Kat was excited now. She could use a real skill to help this girl after attempting to rob her, and that legitimately made her feel a lot more at ease. Without really thinking, Kat got her face really close to the thread to examine it but didn't make any attempts to grab it. She just looked to try to understand more about it.

There was that urge again. The urge to expunge some of the frustrations of her life outside the game that 'can't be complained about'. She took a moment to enjoy the last of the reward for her incredibly hard work--the cinnamon bun, obviously--before finally offering Kat a friendly smile and a response to go with it.

"My mother only ever showed me how to put them on. In fact, I dare say there isn't a variety of formal wear I can't wear properly. I've even helped a man fix his own tie before."

She had to think about what she had heard about Terrasphere in general to answer the question so vital to the duo's success. "I... don't think you can make anything last forever with Ar-can-a-mancy, but if it's something small like a thread, I'm sure that with some practice I can make it last the whole day. After all, I usually have a cane conjured throughout the day on and off, and I've yet to feel myself deprived of the ability to make it again."
