"Big, has fur, but has feathers, and it bites as hard as it beaks... What kind of stupid description is that?! Why are humans so stubborn about talking in enigmatic ways?!" The small fairy huffed while hovering near Max's shoulder, annoyed and angry.

"It doesn't matter, as long as we pluck all the feathers and shear all of its fur with a lot of ass-kicking, we will get the loot and the reward too." Max said, with his arms folded behind his head and with the big crystal sword crossing his back while sheathed, albeit ready to be used at any moment that it proved to be necessary.

Approaching the base of the mountain, the group of adventurers came to a halt, with their guide once again giving the instructions for this particular mission: They had to go in pairs into the mountain, in order to find the dire creature that had been causing a disruption in the ecossystem by becoming an overwhelming predator that no other creature is managing to deal with, so they had to cover as much ground as possible.

"... And that's how it is... Upon finding the creature, no one is allowed to play hero and try to fight it by themselves. Head back and report to me. When you hear the horn, it means we found the creature's lair and we go bring it down together. Understood?"

There was one or another mumbling, but after a fierce glare, a collective 'understood!' brought a smirk on the man's face.

"Perfect. Now take your duo and good luck."

"Ugh-- Do we really need to fight with all of these guys? Our reward will be so little if we have to divide it with all of them..." She pouted.

Max rolled his eyes. "You got a point. But it doesn't matter either, we just need to find the monster first and beat it down before anyone else." He shrugged, ignoring what the guide had just recommended, before turning to @Imoogi, that seemed to be lone during most of their travel.

"Hey, do you want to go find that dumbass in the forest together?" He pointed with his thumb to the depths of the mountain.

"What?! What are you doing?" She exclaimed.

"Finding a duo?" He frowned.

"You stupid monkey, you have me. ME! You don't need a duo!"

"You don't count, you can't fight at all, so that guy will think I'm cheating."

"WHAT?! I'm the one that makes your weapon worth anything, you little bra-"

"So, what do you say?" Max ignored the fairy, looking at the snake girl.

So far, Imoogi had spent half of the climb grumbling, and the other half of the climb wandering off the path to pick whatever weird plant caught her eye. Of the people in the group, she certainly seemed like the one taking things least seriously. It wasn't... entirely incorrect.

Really, her problem was that she felt like this job was below her. She'd fought in Vintergard and survived! There were vets who couldn't claim the same! Sure, she hadn't run into the fight, but still!

"Ugh, they could at least pretend to treat us like adults," she muttered as the group began to split apart. She hated group projects - she inevitably ended up stuck with the dregs of the class. Including now, as a kid with a big sword and a mouthy companion approached.

She opened her mouth to say she didn't need the help... but she was already running out of options as people paired off with their friends and allies. She flicked her tongue out in annoyance, and then shrugged. "Sure.."

At least he could be the meat shield, right? A sword that big had to mean he was a front-liner.

"Rad." With the agreement of the girl, Max smirked. "My name is Dynamax, but Max works, and this thing here is my pet." He gestured to the fairy that hovered close to his shoulder, before she scowled and quickly scooted in front of his face to protest.

"Excuse me, you DUMBASS. I'm not a pet, and much less a thing. I'm a fairy, and my name is Jade."

Max mostly ignored the fairy's complaints, brushing her aside with the back of his hand and continuing to speak with the snake girl. "I have no idea of how to find the monster, but if you have a good plan, I will go in front of you and stab that thing to death." She didn't seem to have any immediate weapon, which made the boy assume she was a magician of the sorts.

Or just a freeloader, which was fine, he didn't mind going with a freeloader if that meant dividing the loot and the glory with less people.

"Pet?" Imoogi squinted at the chatty fairy. She wouldn't have considered something that looked like a person and talked a 'pet'. It wasn't even that cute, really. "Imoogi. I've got potions that should help with that."

And to demonstrate she pulled a pair of vials from her bandolier, each filled with a shimmering red liquid. She knocked one back, then offered the other to Max.

"Here. Warming potion. Last thing we need is you freezing up because of the cold and dropping your sword or something."

It wasn't a lie - mountains were cold, and Imoogi was more sensitive to cold than most. She gave Max a fanged grin. "Call it a free sample, in case you're impressed enough to buy some buy the time we've killed that monster in the mountains."

If that one robot chick could shill potions in the middle of a battlefield, then Imoogi sure could.

"Anyway... it's a big monster thing killing everything, right? All we gotta do is look for a big nest or a bunch of bones, I bet."

And, deciding she would assert her "superiority" here and now, Imoogi started climbing the mountain ahead of Max.

"Don't listen to him." Jade crossed her arms, huffing.

"Imoogi? Like that dragon? Kickass." Max said, pulling the random trivia out of his arse and all the obscure RPGs he endlessly played.

His eyes trailed to the potion offered, taking it and nodding firmly before tugging the lid open. "Thanks, I don't have anything to help with the cold, but if it becomes too much for you, you can have my cape." He pointed at it with his thumb. It was somewhat warm, and it looked pretty cool (for him), so it was the best he could offer.

"Then you will be freezing to death." Jade facepalmed.

"Reptiles have a harder time to deal with cold. I learned it at school." Max shrugged, glancing at the flask. "How much these things cost anyway?" He asked, shaking the flask before chugging it down, letting out a loud sigh after finishing it off, wiping his mouth with his forearm before almost tossing the flask away, but father told him to never toss trash on the ground, so he tossed it into his inventory.

It would be useful later, maybe.

"You sound like you know what you are doing. Maybe there is loot between the bones too... Does that kind of thing drops gold?" He asked, curious as he followed Imoogi. Even if he could climb faster with his monkey butt, he wasn't going ahead of the person that actually knew what she was doing.

Traversing the Cold Mountain

Dynamax and Imoogi must make Contribution Checks, using any Expertise or Mastery, but never repeating any of them unless they have rolled all Expertises and Masteries they have in their sheets. You may use your Main Action to roll your Contribution Check, and may use your Bonus or Free Actions for anything else. You may choose to do another Main Action if you wish, but you won't be able to make the Cycle's Contribution Check if you decide to do it.

[ 0/250 ]

After the conclusion of the Contribution Check, the next Phase will start.

For every Cycle (that ends at the end of Dynamax's post) that the duo don't complete the Contribution Check, they must face one random challenge, and may only continue their Contribution Checks after finishing it (The same random challenge can't happen more than once):

  1. Misstep, the character that rolled the lowest check in the Cycle makes one wrong step and risks rolling and falling. Both characters may make a Reflex Save (the falling character trying to recover, and the non-falling character trying to help the falling character out). The falling character can reduce the damage depending on how high the highest Save between the two of them is:

    <30 = 6d20 damage
    31 ~ 65 = 4d20 damage
    66 ~ 100 = 2d20 damage
    101< = No damage

  2. Landslide, a faulty terrain suddenly causes a landslide. Both characters must make any Check or Save, adding both of their values together to try to escape the Landslide. Both of their values together are going to subtract from a value of 120. Whatever is the difference will decrease both of their HP and the Contribution Check.

  3. It's a Trap! a stupid trap was sneakily placed on middle of the path to try to catch the predator, entangling whoever steps on it and making them hang on a net. Make an Awareness Check of DC 80, if you fail, you are caught by the trap. You must then, make any Check to try and pass the DC to escape. If someone is free, they may roll to try to free their ally. For every post (not cycle) with a member stuck, you lose 1d20 Contribution.

  4. Wolves, certainly not the predators you are looking for, but they appear anyway... Fight 4x auto monster Wolves.

Imoogi nodded. Finally, someone who knew what her name was a reference to! "The game wouldn't let me use anything that meant 'dragon' for some reason, but I guess they don't know Korean. Sucks for them!"

She looked around, trying to remember what she could about hunting animals. Normally the things she hunted were trying to find her, so she didn't actually know a lot about tracking things. You were supposed to look for... scratches, or feathers, or shit, right?

Damn, she wished there was a tracking skill she could use. Even investigation mode wasn't helping that much.

"Nothing drops gold in this game, or any normal loot. Instead it's all realistic." Imoogi made a face as made finger quotes. She had mixed feelings about Terrasphere's obsession with realisim - it made the game better than anything else VR, but it also went too far sometimes. "They make you skin animals yourself and everything. It's a huge pain, but some of the NPCs will pay a lot for what you find."

Ugh, was she lost? They'd barely made any progress and already Imoogi was having trouble telling one rock from the other. All she could do was continue to march forward confidently until one of them saw something...

Being dumb

"Goodness... Not only I will have to deal with a monkey, now I will have to deal with a girl that pretends to be an imaginary reptile..." Jade rubbed her temples.

Max elbowed Jade away, squinting at her before returning his attention to the snake girl. "Shit, really? That sucks. But at least Imoogi is good enough." Max frowned. Why did the game not let you use dragon as a name? "Wait, are you korean or something?" He asked, curious, and making it very clear that he didn't even know that name was korean to begin with.

"This system kinda sucks, but I guess if it gives a lot of gold, then it is worth it..." Max rubbed his chin. "But I'm not too fond to do all this work. Killing things is already hard enough. I'd rather if coins just popped out of the monster when we stab them."

"What kind of idiot thought is that? Do you think living things are piggy banks to just have coins falling out of their guts?" Jade fluttered her wings, incredulous.

"You are being a pain in the ass today, aren't you?" Max crossed his arms with a scowl.

"The only pain in the ass will be the hit I will give on your butt you little-" Jade scowled.

"Who is little, you glorified mosquito?!" Max chattered like a monkey, and the two of them clasped their foreheads together, glaring daggers at each other.

But before the fight could escalate, the ground began rumbling, and earth and vegetation alike began sliding and carrying everything on its way.

"Does it matter? No such thing as 'Korea' in Terrasphere, after all."

There was something nice about that, really, being able to forget that and all the baggage. "Here, I'm just Imoogi, and I-"

She trailed off as Max and his fairy began to bicker again. She crossed her arms and frowned. "...that NPC sure is annoying. Isn't there a way you could mute it or something?" At least Imoogi's pets couldn't speak - they just hissed and chittered and burbled the way animals were supposed to.

Imoogi was ready to just leave the two behind and just look for the target herself when the ground began to shake. She didn't even think about her next action as she turned and grabbed Max and his fairy companion and bolted, dragging the two along with her.

There was an outcrop a little ways downhill and to the left. It was a perfect place to take refuge from the earth and soil crashing around them. Imoogi skidded to a halt before finally letting go and took a moment to catch her breath.

Weirdly enough, she looked more energized than terrified as the landslide passed by.

"Holy shit. That was awesome."

Earth shook, and the footing Max had faltered as his eyes grew wide, losing his balance while the fairy that was nearly throwing hands with him yelped-

"Max! No!"

Jade tried to pull him by the cape, but it was of no use. However, Imoogi's quick thinking was the key to rescue the boy just in time, while also taking the fairy away to a cover, that protected all of them from any harm while everything continued to slide down in a destructive disaster.

Breathing rapidly, Max took a moment to register what had just happened, looking at the broken trees and large portions of earth scattered around with a surprise look on his face. "Goddamn it, that was--"

"awesome"

Max turned to look at the snake girl, grinning and nodding eagerly. "Yeah! That was rad, it kicked ass! You were so quick!" He punched the air excitedly, while the fairy, still shaken, looked at the two of them before letting out a relieved sigh.

"Thank goodness..." She rested a hand on her chest, fluttering her wings before blinking and averting her eyes with crossing arms. "You need to be more careful, you could've got hurt!" Jade scolded.

"Well, you almost got hurt too, but it is all good. She got our back-" He pointed at Imoogi with his thumb. "And well, at least it got a lot of obstacles out of the way. We just gotta be a bit careful with our steps now." Max said, starting to climb up once again, as soon as Imoogi was ready.

Imoogi grinned back at Max. Here was at least one kid that got it, huh? Her previous annoyance slid away like the mountainside had. Sure, Max was like... a baby, but he made more sense than most of the adult's she'd met so far.

"You know, I think I like you. Too many people take this game way too seriously." She hopped from foot to few a few times, then followed Max up the mountainside. It wasn't hard to pick her way through the rubble and debris. It was nothing compared to navigating Vintergard when it was busy being exploded by robots.

"Hey, you shouldn't do that quest alone, you might die!" she said in mocking singsong, letting her frustration carry her forward as she skipped between stable points and pointed them out to Max. "You'll feel bad if you just kill the bad guys! I know because I was a soooldier!"

Then, she raised her voice and made a face, mocking a certain woman who wasn't around to defend herself.

"Heeeeeey guuuuuys, what if we didn't kill the final boss?"

Imoogi spat to the side after that one, then grinned mirthlessly at Max. "Would you believe people even listened to that? I don't think any of them know how video games work."

"Already? Hell, I guess I am hella likeable." Max rose his eyebrows, surprised about the sudden confession. "I like you too, you are cool. You need to teach me how you do that fasty fast thing that you dodge stuff so quickly." He said, with his eyes sparkling slightly, desiring to have more knowledge to get even stronger to kick everyone's butts.

However, all the brim in his eyes and face disappeared upon the reveal of the snake girl.

"N-No way, they didn't kill the final boss? But... But the loot, what about the loot? The gold coins, the goddamn Mastery Points?!" He asked, incredulous and outraged by it.

"Ah... Here we go again..." She rolled her eyes.

He wasn't there to fight the final boss, and those who were lucky to be there dared to not get the loot? Impossible, he couldn't believe it. People were nuts, that was the only explanation. And there he was, begging and cadging for loot and MP because all he had was a legendary sword that didn't have legendary stats and only came with a stupid fairy that didn't stop complaining any fucking second.

"That's... That's not good, Imoogi! We need to find that stupid beast as fast as we can, what if some fucking weirdo finds it first and decide to make it run away just so we can't kill it?" He exclaimed, perhaps hurrying a bit too much and rushing ahead before Imoogi could point out about the safe spots, and soon sinking his leg deep into a hole, making he nearly roll down the hill as he quickly flailed to grab on a nearby tree.

"Oof-"

"Max! For the love of Gwyndolainn and Rhiannon! Why do you keep doing this?" Jade quickly approached the boy with a concerned expression.

He groaned, somewhat upside down. "B-Because I love rolling down to my near death, stop complaining and help me up!" Max protested, with the fairy sighing and trying to help him up by pulling his index and fluttering her wings.

"I know, right? All because they thought that maybe it could help with something in the future?" She shrugged helplessly. "And now everything's harder for us."

Stupid dumb players, trying to be pacifists when clearly the best option to future issues was to hit it harder. As far as Imoogi was concerned, the current situation was their fault. It would even be their just desserts if it weren't for the fact it affected everyone...

As lost as she was in her own frustrated train of thought, she didn't notice Max's misstep until it was too late to help. She carefully made her way over, tongue flicking out as she offered a hand to help him up. No blood, at least. "Geez, kid. You gotta watch your step."

Once he was out, she considered Max's previous question. "I picked Shadow Arts when I made my character. It's like... the ninja shit skill, I guess? It's pretty cool."

Taking Imoogi's hand and with a bit of the fairy's help, Max soon found himself on his feet once again, "Thanks..." scratching the back of his head while looking at the snake girl with abit of confusion on his face. "Help with the future? Leveling up and getting loot is what helps with the future, not avoiding killing the final boss!" He shook his head.

"I am not sure why you guys keep calling 'monster' bosses, but it has always been a Starcalled problem to make mistakes all the time." Jade said. "Take Max for example, who keeps falling over and over." She snickered.

"Go to hell, will you?" He pouted, then turned to Imoogi. "Ninja skills-- So that's how you are so quick, huh? That's hella cool. Maybe I should take this ability too? How fun it is to use it?" He asked, walking next to Imoogi as they proceeded...

... The travel uphill continued, this time far smoother and without any more obstacles.

At some point, things felt strangely pacific, with only the conversation of the beastfolks and the eventual bickering between the fairy and the boy echoing in the woods. There was no sounds of animals, no sounds of anything aside from maybe the rustling treetops when the wind brushed them.

... And then, an earpiercing scream echoed from the depths of the forest.

Max frowned at the sound, and the fairy that was smugly flying around quickly hid behind his nape.

"W-Wh-What was that?! That was... W-Was it someone?" She swallowed.

Max huffed. "Only one way to find out." He said, casting a quick glance at Imoogi, and drawing the crystal blade and charging forward, but not too fast so he wouldn't have his attention caught.

The scream continued, slowly quietening, but still there... Agonizing, and eventually becoming whimperings...

And the cause for it... Was a hulking creature that seemed to trap someone under it, with a fallen and mauled adventurer scattered right next to the current victim.

Feathered Furred Danger

You are all considered 'Far' from the Owlbear. You may swap, using your Movement, between 'Far' and 'Close' Zones. Every time you are retaliated by an odd numbered retaliation, you start your next cycle on a 'Close' Zone, and if you are retaliated by an even numbered retaliation, you start your next cycle on a 'Far' Zone. If you have 3+ Movement, you ignore this feature and start anywhere in the cycle.

After you act on the cycle, you roll one of these retalliations from the Feathered Furred Danger:
  1. Hyper Beak, the creature attacks you with a powerful bite, aiming for your vital spots. Receive 25 damage and make a DC 50 Fortitude Save to avoid getting 'Bleed' condition. For every stack of Bleed, you receive 5 damage every time you move.

  2. Horror Hoot, the creature hoots (roar?) in pure primal rage, causing a supernatural fear to you. Receive 25 damage and make a DC 50 Will Save to avoid getting 'Fear' condition. For every stack of Fear, your rolls have -5 of penalty.

  3. Slice and Dice, the creature strike with both of its claws, making you receive 6d10 damage.

  4. Nowhere to Run, the creature shows it bears a glimpse of intelligence, grabbing any near heavy object such as boulders and tree chunks to toss at you. Make a DC 50 Reflex Save to avoid receiving 50 damage.
You may update your Build Sheet, but your HP remains the same unless you increase your Max HP (which increases your Current HP by the same amount).

"Oh, it's awesome. You're good with all kinds of ninja tools, and you get shadow magic. She pulled out a kunai and spun it around her finger. It was something she... never actually used, because it sucked for throwing and didn't take poison well, but it certainly felt cool to spin it and flip it as they walked. "No one ever sees me coming until it's too late-

The scream silenced her. She let Max take the lead, putting away the kunai and grabbing her potions instead. Her eyes widened as she saw the adventurer. The air was thick with the taste of blood, and the monster that was the source.

"...I wonder how it tastes."

Her voice was filled with excitement. Now here was something worth fighting! All they had to do was kill this, and then no one could claim she was too reckless to be promoted or whatever. Imoogi uncorked her potion and drank about a third of it before passing it off to Max. "Here, drink this, it'll buff you!"

She pulled out her darts, ready to attack - but the beast was the first to notice. It charged her with a hooting bellow (or was it a bellowing hoot?) and lunged. Caught flatfooted, she couldn't avoid the raking claws. She stumbled backwards, hissing in pain as she reached for her darts...

"Then you better show me these cool ninja stuff now. We are going to need it." He said while charging with his blade, and the fairy on his nape panicked.

"AAAAAAAH! W-Wait, Max! That thing is too dangerous!" She cowered behind him.

"Stop being a chicken." He scowled, taking Imoogi's potion and chugging it down, letting out a sigh. "Thanks, I can already feel its power!" Max grinned, tightening the grip of the blade and leaping, thrusting his blade forward and swirling in a circular slicing strike.

Max chattered deviously, but soon the retaliation came, with the beak of the monster going straight for his leg and taking a big bite of it, making him help and jump out of the way, rolling and wincing as he held the wound.

"Working on it!" Imoogi pulled out one of her darts that was hopefully long enough to pierce the monster's feathery fur. She loaded it with a vial of paralytic poison and stabbed the beast's side.

The monster roared, twitching as the poison caused its muscles to seize painfully. Unfortunately, it wasn't fast enough to keep it from turning towards her. It smashed a claw into her, tossing her aside and onto the ground. There was an unpleasant cracking sound and a sharp pain. "Shit-!"

It was fine. If something was broken, she could just heal it! As she opened her inventory to find healing potions she couldn't help but complain. "Great cover, kid-!"

"Oww, that hurts-" The fairy fluttered her wings, watching the snake girl being tossed around.

"Damn it, I said NEXT!" He retorted, but also didn't like to see the snake girl getting that hurt.

He turned to look at the creature, looking very

"And you, I will teach you some goddamn manners, you bear-chicken." He shoved his index forward, in an accusatory manner before gripping his blade tightly and with killing intent.

"You won't hit my friend! You will eat SHIT! EEEK EEEK OOOK!" Max chattered in a war cry, thrusting his blade into the carapace of the owlbear before twisting it to splatter even more blood around, making its health drop like an anvil into the sea.

Did that kid just make monkey noises? Imoogi stared as Max charged ahead, but shook it off just as quickly. With him finally being the meat shield she needed, Imoogi had time to open her inventory and pull out the big guns.

Or in this case, grenades!

Imoogi grinned as her flasks dropped into her hands. All she had to do was wait for an opening, and-

Critical Failure
1
The monster turned her way, eyes gleaming with hatred as it reared onto its hind legs. Its hoot of rage resounded through the air and rattled her thoughts. The bravado that had carried her this far was finally tempered by the shadow of fear.

Stunned by the roar, she droppped one of the grenades at her feet.

Imoogi had only a moment to react. She chucked the rest of the grenades at the monster as she was engulfed in a cloud of stinging smoke and fire. The rest crashed erratically around the monster, peppering it with explosions.

Moments later, Imoogi dove out of the cloud, badly burned and hissing loudly. "Goddamnit... its almost dead! Max, kill it!"

"Woah-! Damn, are you alright?!" Max spat a concerned question, but his attention didn't avert from the enemy just yet-- And with her call to kill it, Max's lips turned into a voracious grin.

"You didn't even need to ask, Imoogi-" His eyes brimmed, and two neurons of his brain connected for a moment, with a neural activation sparkling the necessity: 'To go Monke'.

"Wai wai WAIT!-"

The fairy tried to stop the monke boy, but it was already too late, with him leaping toward the enemy with a mighty strike!

"OOOOOOOK!"

With a wide sword slash, the crystalized blade sunk deep into the wounds @Imoogi's alchemicals had already made, allowing it to cut through its carapace as if it was knife on butter.

However, it came with a grave consequence, with the claws of the dying creature thrusting into Max's ribs, making the boy cough and struggle before swinging his blade upwards to finish off the beast, and fall on his knees, breathing erratically.

Imoogi panted as the monster fell, the pain of her burns still raging through her burns. It wasn't enough to keep her from grinning widely as the UI confirmed it was dead.

"YEAH! TAKE THAT, ASSHOLE!"

It was lucky her yell didn't set off another landslide, or exhaust what little energy she had left. She turned her attention away from the bear and to the others, all in various states of maimed and... possibly dead? She wasn't sure, but she knew what to do about it.

"If that guy wants to be pissed at us when we come back dragging a whole... bird-bear-monster thing and two fallen adventurers, then he can be as pissed as he pleases," she said cheerfully as she pulled out some thin bone needles. She went to the fallen adventurers and jabbed each of them with a needle each, delivering healing serum to the both of them.

The third she poked unceremoniously into Max's upper arm. "Now that's what I call a hunt! This this has to be worth a lot of gold."
