The request sounded simple enough. A young widow had received dark omens hinting towards her husband's (Jorge) untimely death and wished to find his remains to give him a proper burial. The hiccup? He had allegedly died in a collapsed mining shaft on the Doron estates; however, his body was no where to be found once the tunnel was reopened. On record, the Jorge had been reported as trapped deeper within an unrecoverable side branch during the natural disaster.

Their mission objectives were easy enough. Explore the abandoned mines and give her husband a proper burial. They had also been tasked with bringing back proof they had found Jorge. Widow Maria mentioned a silver amulet in the shape of a gondola backed by a crescent moon as proof, claiming it was her husband's family heirloom that he always kept on person. She had also reminded them to keep their excursions short as the mines one held large quantities of bloodstone, though it shouldn't be too big of an concern considering the mine had long since run dry.

Armed with this knowledge, Ru stood at the base of the quarry, just outside the mine's entrance. An awkward line of reassurance was given to his companion(s) as he'd take a deep breath. Shiver running down his spine, the Lepus turned away from the large mass off in the distance behind a what was known as Shield of Axiolus.

"We go in, bury Jorge, maybe say a little prayer, snag his amulet and get the heck out. Bada-bing, bada-boom! Nothing to it… ahah… Shall we?"

Despite the many dangers that the region openly displayed, not unlike a mad man brandishing a bloodied dagger in both hands with zero concern about getting apprehended, Ayna Nietzsche has taken to Lyrwick as her in-game home. Thus, when she received the request from a young widow involving the remains of her dearly departed husband, Ayna ignored the ominous darkness hinted by the wife and the underlying threat of collapsing mining shafts. The Doron Mines, mostly the family behind the business, piqued her interest. Maybe if Ayna proved herself, and displayed enough of her competence, she'd get their attention. Should be a great first step toward my own enterprise.

Ayna nodded, her lips curling into a confident smile. She brandished her polearm, the preferred weapon she usually charged with lightning in battle, Calamity's Light.

"Sounds like a great plan! I'm in!"

She did wonder, though, if anyone else in this hodge-podge group of like-minded individuals have already been in the mines. Ayna had not. This would be her first appearance in this new place. She wanted to be as prepared as possible, even though she wasn't too into the idea of being responsible for anyone other than herself.

"Has anyone else already been inside, though? Any info on what we could face in there? Kinds of monsters, maybe?"

Ayna at least knew about the claustrophobic surprise of random cave-ins. That much, she was aware of. What else could be lurking inside, she was concerned. Not out of fear. But out of not wanting to waste this opportunity. If they failed, it wouldn't look good on her resume, especially if the Doron family only heard about her through that failure. First impressions tend to last.

Tristaria stood aside her two companions, having more-or-less met them mere minutes ago at the quest public request board. She hadn't bothered to learn names, nor did she feel the need to. All she knew was, there were two more people ready and willing to make things easier. Buff Bunnyboy, and Pointy Fox Lady (more so that fancy pole-arm than the tail, which looked delightfully fluffy). They looked competent at least.

In truth, she'd taken this quest for one main reason: test out the limits of revival in Terrasphere. Supposedly, he'd been dead for quite a while now. She'd heard people suggest anywhere from a few days to weeks, depending on the conditions of the collapsed tunnel: oxygen amounts, whether he got crushed in the cave-in, etc. Could she revive someone so far gone? Tris had no idea, but she was going to find out.

I know we'll be encountering a lot of rocks.

Given her perpetually unamused face, Tristaria had slowly taken on a deadpan flavor of snark, figuring it was one of the few ways to really express any kind of personality.

If the mine shaft was opened recently, I would hope nothing dangerous made its way in yet. Lead the way, Bunnyboy.

Ru nerves eased a bit as he let out a nervous chuckle. It appeared as though the dead pan humor was working wonders for him. The Lepus winked while giving his enthusiastic companion a thumbs up.

"Hmm… can't say I have. Ahaha, well she's not wrong. I think shorty's onto something though. Doubt much managed to survive inside, and we ought to be the first batch sneaking in."

At his team mate's ushering, the Lepus dove forth into the abyss with only a small oil lantern in hand and faith in their abilities. Nothing seemed too unusual upon entering as the trio came across a fairly linear tunnel system lined with scattered bits of abandoned mining equipment. Aside from signs of reclamation, nothing new could be found, as their predecessors had already cleared the path for them. Descending further and further, they'd eventually come across a large cavern branching several ways. It appeared as though the mining team had halted here as clearing any further would compromise the stability of the foundation.

"If I was a panicking miner in the middle of a collapse… which way would I go?..."

He'd take a few steps forward to inspect the remains of the dig site, pacing back and forth while humming gently to himself. Considering the hardy nature of their surroundings, following old tracks would be neigh impossible, assuming they even existed in the first place. Of the options presented, only the remained open, while the others had presumably long since caved in.

"Assuming he knew the tunnel system… he'd probably want to aim up and away from the bloodstone, right? But none of these options seem to do that… I got nothing. My vote's middle unless you two feel strongly about a particular direction."

Ru waited patiently for a response from his companions while continuing to tilt his ears in confusion. Perhaps it was a lost cause trying to predict someone with a confused mental state. Whatever his companions suggested, he'd be more than happy to follow. Considering the diverse nature of their skill sets, perhaps someone else would have an answer?

OOC: Please feel free to pull out whatever ideas you might have or to progress the plot along accordingly! I have a rough idea for the conclusion but getting there is up in the air.

Ayna heaved a sigh of relief at that confirmation. She had expected as much. Lyrwick was supposed to be a different beast back then, before that meteor crash or whatever. Things changed, and maybe, just maybe, that included the monsters that could have been in the mines once upon a time. And by them changing, she was thinking of them changing to nonexistence.

"That's good to hear then. Haven't fought monsters yet, but I'm always up for a challenge!"

Following the others inside, Ayna made sure to keep her wits about her, eyes quick to search for anything that might become a threat. At one point, she thought she saw something move, but upon a second look, nothing seemed to point to that fact if it were even a fact. Might just be my imagination. She decided to keep it to herself and just learn from her companions. They seemed the more capable, more experienced adventurers.

"The other way from the exit, I guess? I'll follow your lead. Don't feel especially drawn towards a specific direction but..."

She wasn't quite sure if she should ask the question, to satiate her curiosity. Ayna didn't want to seem useless or stupid to these new folks, but in the end, she remembered that there was no point in remaining stupid. She would if she didn't ask the question.

"...what are bloodstones?"

Tris followed along dutifully. As they entered the darkness, it slowly became clear that her eyes had a faint glow to them, which produced a somewhat uncanny feeling of light blue eyes watching from from the darkness. However, this was sadly lost on her, as she had no real way of knowing her eyes glowed apart from maybe a mirror which was the last thing she expected to see here.

As one of her companions made a confession, Tris suddenly felt just a tad but less safe, turning to Foxy with a slightly concerned look.

You haven’t fought anything? Not even a wolf? I hope you at least practiced using that thing…

She’d just have to hope Foxy would be able to handle herself if something nasty did end up in here.

Not sure. Things with blood in the name are never good though.

She then turned her focus to the task at hand, joining Bunnyboy in investigating the dig site. Whatever Foxy might’ve thought of her, "more capable," Tris was not.

I agree, the middle path looks like the closest path to escape to. Best just pick one.

Judging from the looks of it, their entire party was rather ignorant with regards to bloodstone, including Ru himself. Though not reassured by this fact, he'd continue to delve further in, proceeding down the middle path as they had agreed upon. It shouldn't be too big of a concern as long as they escaped at the first sign of experiencing abnormalities, right? One could only hope.

"To be honest? This was kind of a last minute gig. I'm assuming that honking rock in the sky we saw outside was the bloodstone… but I have no idea what it does. We need to hurry if we see some of that stuff though. None of the miners that returned from here seem to have survived when I asked around for a guide. Said it made em sick or something…"

The further their party descended, the more cool and damp it became. The air had grown still as well, indicating that the flow from the outside no longer reached their current location. Though the group had passed several abandoned mining carts, only small bits of debris remained. A fine coating of red powdering dust lingered on the equipment, perhaps best left untouched. Eventually they'd stumble across yet another intersecting chamber. What awaited them this time however was much more eerie a sight than before.

Several partially decayed corpses were strewn about their perimeter in the distance. Some disemboweled, others disembodied with limbs strewn about, and others crushed beneath rock and fallen debris… but one thing in common remained. Their faces were all plastered with looks of horror in their final moments. A hand raised from Ru, indicating for the group to pause as he heaved with disgust, trying to prevent the retching from his gut. The Lepus quickly rummaged his satchel for a cloth mask after accidentally wafting in a breath filled with weeks' worth of accumulated stench.

"Good graphics… but a little too real… I think I'm going to be sick. Let's hurry and find Jorge. Hopefully he's in this… mess… somewhere."

(Awareness, success!)

Having scrounged around for a bit, Ru continued to sift through the bodies despite his aversion. Muttering short prayers under his breath, he'd squint curiously at the wounds presented. His previous life as a pathologist kicked in, identifying several things off with the victim's cell morphology. Their skin was splotched with small, tiny dots across their surface, a common sign of petechiae, or rupturing of their capillaries. Their pupils dilated though not from the darkness considering their ample equipment… perhaps a fight or flight response? Though unsure of what happened here, something had prompted their unusual condition. Was this the effect of the rumored bloodstone?

Ayna felt a bit of clarification was in order, so she whispered the next bit to her party mates. It was one thing to cut out bits and pieces of the whole truth for them but it was another to lie entirely. Ayna felt they only needed to know what they had to know, and since they needed to trust each other to survive in this mostly unknown place, she was going to tell them the entire truth of the matter. Neither of them looked like they were with the Ynglar Brotherhood anyway.

"I mean, I have fought bandits, a lot of them, here in Lywick, but I haven't exactly fought a wolf or any beastly monsters, so..."

The bandits were, of course, not related to the Brotherhood, and Ayna has in fact not actually gotten that close to those folks, but they were the biggest thing in the region and she didn't really want to cross them, not right now, not while she was still struggling to learn all she could from this world, so she thought it best to tiptoe around anyone who could even remotely be doing business with the group. Her two companions didn't seem like they'd be involved with them but she'd rather not take the risk.

Nodding at the bunny guy's initiative, Ayna followed them without any hesitation. When they came upon the corpses, Ayna took a step back, not sure whether any of them would just jump at them from out of nowhere. That and they looked hazardous to their virtual health. Noticing what the bunny guy was doing, Ayna followed suit, putting on a mask to keep herself safe. Was this because of those bloodstones? The thought immediately came to mind.

As she tried to find their quarry, Jorge or something, she became too occupied with the mystery of the bloodstones in relation to these corpses, so much so that she found herself too distracted to find anything of worth. She mumbled to the others absentmindedly, being absolutely useless at this point.

"Anyone find anything interesting?"

Tris stared blankly at Ayna as she clarified, much to her satisfaction.

Oh. Good to know you've at least fought something before.

The next room was truly repulsive. One of those moments where Terrasphere might've been better with some less realism. It was so easy to believe, looking at these corpses, that real people had really died here. She used the opportunity to carry the bloodstone topic forward.

If bloodstone has anything to do with this, then I want nothing to do with bloodstone.

(She turns to Ru.)

Yes, I'd rather not stay longer than we have to.

Suddenly, Tris closed her eyes, and her antennae began vibrating slightly. An ultrasonic beeping noise, imperceptible to most, echoed back and presented her with a detailed, 360 vision of every surface in the small(ish) enclosure.

Where the lantern light could only focus on pieces of the picture at a time, this sort of echolocation made one thing obvious to Tris...

It looks like most of them were crawling the same way. Deeper, I mean. Look at the way they're all positioned. I'm not seeing a silver amulet on any of them, though.

"Bandits huh? Well, best bit of advice I can give you is monsters mostly have the same weak points, at least the fleshy ones do. Aim for the head or groin. Honorable mentions to neck and armpits."

Once their investigations had completed, the group reformed to share their discoveries. From the looks of it, two things could be concluded. One, the miners were suffering from a horrific ailment that caused them to bleed out internally. Hopefully it wasn't contagious. Two, the afflicted were trying to delve further inside for whatever purpose. Perhaps a cure was deeper within?

"Agreed. Let's keep this trip as short as possible…"

His eyes lingered over the dead.

"Lest we share their fate."

Prior to following the direction indicated by the corpses, Ru grimaced from behind his mask while kneeling closer to a body of an unaffected miner. The beads around his wrist began to spin rhythmically as mana pulsed towards the deceased. Given a moment or two, a disembodied spirit taking on the silhouette of the miner's head appeared. Its eyes blinked slowly as he blankly stared at the lepus. Though not audible to the others it would shortly become clear that this was a form of séance, allowing him to speak with the dead.

"Good news, he said Jorge chased after the infected to save them. We're on the right track. Bad news, the tunnel up ahead is unstable. Something about the support pillars rotting from moisture, an underground lake or something? He said the other paths loop around… but the main shaft has the least amount of bloodstone, the sides weren't mined out as well. Oh, what's that buddy? You gotta to go?"

A hand waved through the spirit body, blowing it away as if a spray of mist.

"May the daughter see you cross to shore."

He'd then turn back to the group to decide on a course of action. Though neither choice reflected his ideal, nobody said adventuring would be easy. Worst case scenario perhaps he could simply eat a death since his tally was clean thus far?

"Pick your poison…potential cave ins, or…"

He'd point at the remaining, disfigured corpses.

"That?"

"Huh."

...was Ayna's only contribution to their information-gathering. She took in as much as what the other two had shared, squinting at the mentioned direction the bodies seemed to have been trying to get to. She watched as the bunny man did something with one of the corpses, arms crossed over her chest. What's he up to? It didn't cross her mind that perhaps he was talking to the dead, even though it should have. No other rational explanations she can come up with at this point.

"You can talk to the dead? Must be very useful in this line of work."

She assumed that by pointing at the corpses, the bunny man meant they'd be fighting the dead forced to a semblance of living, not quite there yet but there enough to move and attack. Literally the undead. Zombies. Ayna brandished her polearm, a wide grin on her face. She could take on zombies. She had watched enough zombie fiction to think she could survive an apocalypse of them. Could be fun.

"So cave-ins or corpses? Can do either, to be honest. Not that picky when it comes to these things. But... Head, groin, neck, or armpits, right?"

Tris watched with her echolocation as Bunnyboy knelt by one of the corpses, the sound waves traveling right on through the ghost. It wasn't until she opened her eyes that she noticed the silent, ghostly figure. Yikes! She stepped back abruptly.

A little warning would be nice, next time you plan on calling ghosts

She heard nothing, but there seemed to be some sort of cohesive conversation going on between them. Must be Ghostspeak. Tris fully agreed with Foxy: that was crazy helpful, especially here, where there were a ton of dead people.

I'm less worried about the bloodstone, myself. If I'm lucky, it won't even affect me as a magia.

She had some doubts about that, but with any luck she had some sort of synthetic immunity. …Then again, she also still had to eat and drink, so maybe she could also get sick like a normal person as well. What would that even feel like? Would she start leaking oil out of her nose?

"It's more for helping folks move on but… it can come in handy like this."

With the group having decided on taking the long way around, he'd sigh before wearily proceeding forth at a hastened pace. Considering the still remaining bloodstone present in the side shafts, their merry band would want to traverse it as swiftly as possible. One thing left the lepus at a loss however. What drove the sick miners deeper inside?

As the group proceeded, artificial light was no longer needed as a faint, red hue began to glow from the walls. Small clusters of crimson red stone shimmered eerily within the tunnel. Though their quantities were small, the pockets lining the call walls were numerous, shimmering like stars in the night sky.

"Alright, let's pick up the pace. Not trying to be a second Marie Curie with all this radiation. Might give us super powers, or it might cause us to bleed from the inside out… Rather not find out."

Ru's steps quickened as he pushed forward, careful to avoid direct contact with the minerals lining the wall. What was originally a casual jog had picked up into a well-paced run, his breathing rhythmic as he'd periodically check behind for the others.

"I'll call out if I see something ahead. Here's to hoping the miners got a big enough head start that we make it through this tunnel unhindered…"

Despite his streamlined, agile physique, the lepis lived true to his heritage, moving quickly but running out of steam equally so. His breathing labored and heart rate elevated, his pace slowed to a trot while stepping to the side to allow another to take point. Thankfully he hadn't touched any of the stone out of carelessness.

A magia? Ayna couldn't help herself but stare at @Tristaria when she revealed what she was. She had a little bit of an idea of what they were, mostly from a quick glimpse during character creation and bits and pieces of unsolicited conversation she'd had with other Players, even NPCs. Or at least she thought that barman was an NPC. It was hard to tell. Some Players actually seemed to enjoy playing this game as an NPC. Sorry, Kamala, but why would you spend more time as a farmer when you can be hunting down bandits for money?

"Do magias still eat and drink? When you sleep, do you dream of electric sheep?"

Ayna was sincerely curious. Her priorities have shifted since involving herself with the game, realizing that what she was in the real world need not be what she is in this one. She wondered if both her companions felt the same. She could ask but she felt like it would distract them from the task at hand, so instead, she followed the bunny man's lead, picking the pace as carefully as she could. Easy peasy.

"You all right?"

She asked the bunny man, @Ru Ning, as she zipped past him, noticing that he wasn't quite feeling right. Was it the bloodstones thing? Maybe he'd expended too much energy talking to ghosts? Either way, they could take it down a notch. No use in trying to speed run to their deaths.

"Should we take a breather or...?"

Yes, we ingest food and water. That might be the best thing to call it: it tastes like nothing. But it is necessary. Unlike sleep. We don't do that. We just snuggle with magic items.

Turning to Bunnyboy, Tris nodded and slowly sped up. As the others ran ahead, she didn't join them. Instead, she'd just casually move along, eventually catching up as one of the two grew tired. Foxy sure wasn't tired, though. She looked like an unstoppable bundle of energy...

That's why you don't run. You get more tired long-term.

Despite the suggestions of her two party members, Tris didn't seem terribly concerned with the red rocks. Quite the opposite, she calmly stepped up to one and placed her hand on it, running a finger of the smooth, red surface.

Code:
MagicSource bloodstone = new BloodstoneCluster(1);
double distance = distance(tristaria, bloodstone);

if (distance <= 10) {
    tristaria.regainEnergy(bloodstone.power);
    tristaria.applyComfort(10 - distance);
    if(tristaria.isMagia) {
        ignoreCorruption(tristaria);
    }
}

Speaking of snuggling with magic items, these feel nice. They're comforting. Not that comforting, but a little.

"Yeaaa—I'm fineeeee... Just need a minute…"

His wheezing voice mustered a response.

"Do Magia get tired?..."

Embarrassed at how sorely he lagged behind, Ru enviously stared at their backs, wondering if maybe the game had transferred over some of their physical aptitudes (or his lack thereof). Though it took a lot longer than he had estimated the trio eventually managed their way to the other side. What waited on the other side however was not a pleasant rest stop with cold beverages and snacks.

Rather, what lie before the group could be best described as a nest of horrors. Crystalline web like threads lie scattered throughout the cavern from wall to wall, forming an intricate ruby red mesh. Off in the distance, several networks trembled periodically. As their eyes followed the tremors, they'd spot what appeared to be miners trapped within the web, their condition far, far worse than what they had seen previously. Blood leaked out from every pore and orifice visible, trickling down their trappings as they struggled to break free, eyes still endlessly fixated deeper within the mining shaft. Periodic screams belted forth from their lungs as they struggled in vain, unaware of the danger quickly approaching.

The threat? A skittering hoard of what appeared to be giant, mutated spiders, blood stone absorbed and jutting from their flesh as integrated into one. They continued to spin a crimson web across the cavern periodically harvesting one or two of their prey for sustenance while continuing their duty, at least until they noticed the arrival of three travelers.

As if previously agreed upon, several sets of eight, beady glowing red eyes turned towards the party as a hostile cacophony of chittering reverberated softly through the room.

"What the hell?… Spiders?… "

He whispered to the others as softly as possible, hoping to not garner any attention.

"Shh… Shit, nevermind. Get ready – head's still good, maybe abdomens."

Beads spinning rapidly about his wrist, mana surged from the lepus as he quickly cast battle magic to prepare for the onslaught. Spirits began to materialize from the void, warmly coalescing around his allies as additional energy began to coarse through their bodies. Though too nervous to notice, several spiders' eyes responded ever so slightly as the spell was initiated.

"Huh."

Ayna wasn't sure what to make of the information about the Magia she just managed to collect right then and there, but any new information was appreciated. The more she got to know about this world, its Players, and its many facets, the more she felt she would be able to finally understand why her brother picked up the game in the first place. Maybe I can figure out why he disappeared, where he went... It was a long shot, but it was also the only shot she had.

Stopping to accommodate the others, she watched as the Magia started checking out the red rocks, rather more up close and personal than Ayna would've liked herself. Before she could warn her about the dangers that could happen by getting that close to the damned things, the Magia was already disproving their theories. Or maybe it's just because she's a Magia, that could be the only reason she isn't getting affected by them, Ayna thought, adding how "neat" it must be to be one.

Ayna's reverie was interrupted by the bunny man mentioning spiders. She felt goosebumps climb up her arms almost immediately. Spiders? Why does it have to be spiders?! Ayna wasn't afraid of the eight-legged freaks, but she wasn't thrilled to be seeing them either.

"Don't worry! I got 'em!"

She proudly beamed before performing a combo chain that had her disappearing and reappearing in what was reminiscent of flashes of lightning, what were actually short-distance teleportations, and stabbing as many of the swarm as she could with Calamity's Light! Some would say it was overkill, but the definition wasn't in Ayna's vocabulary. It was in Huifang's. But the creatures wouldn't go down with a fight, trying their best to swat Ayna where they could. Fortunately for her, for the most part anyway, the Beastfolk was still a tad faster than most.

Well, I wouldn't call it tired, but...

She didn't have the time to finish the thought, as she heard some truly bone-chilling noises. Creeping, crawling, some sort of viscous weaving, and probably most horrifying of all, the occasional crunch. Eww.

Tris followed closely behind her two companions as they caught sight of the awful scene. Immediately, Tristaria felt herself tense up. However...

Code:
if (tristaria.fear > 5) {
   tristaria.fear = 5;
}

You know, I'm deathly afraid of spiders.

She explained it with the most calm and disinterested look imaginable: as if it was more of a fun fact than a pressing and relevant concern. Foxy didn't even hesitate, rushing in and obliterating two in no time at all. Good. A world with less spiders was truly a better world, especially considering the horrific things these spiders were doing.

Raising her hand to the sky, it began to spark with blue lightning. She surveyed the room, looking for one of the closer spiders, swinging the hand and unleashing a powerful strike of lightning. Unfortunately, the spider instantly reacted to the magic, stepping out of the way as the bolt scorched the rock beside it. It screeched and instantly retaliated, biting Tris on the side.

Oww.

She still barely even reacted as she kicked it away.

New plan: you smash them, and I'll keep you alive.

"Afraid huh? Had me fooled..."

Interesting, though the magia showed clear physiological signs of fear, something had quickly suppressed it. Was this also a perk of their race? The doctor within him was curious to find out however now was not the time. It would make sense though given the framework of this world, though it would pose a strange question regarding the game's influence on each player's brain. Sure they had pain sliders but to directly affect an emotion? That seemed a bit… dangerous.

"Oh ho? Fancy footwork!"

Inspired by Ayna's deft feat of agile maneuvering, Ru took up a more offensive stance. With a deep breath, the spirits coalescing around him were quickly inhaled, blue veins of energy channeling down to his right arm as it took on a more ethereal, charged appearance. His efforts were in vain however, as the bolt of phantasmal energy was easily side stepped by a spider, causing it to dissipate uselessly against the floor.

"I… think that's a good plan. Me too, I'll watch your back… Go team, go! Go team, go…"

"Oh, hey, twinsies!"

Ayna wasn't technically deathly afraid of spiders, but she did hate them all the same. Maybe hate's a strong word. Ayna just didn't like them around her, anywhere near her, for that matter. That's more like it. Noticing her companions miss their respective attacks, Ayna gave them a reassuring nod, complete with a thumbs-up. She actually wanted to fist bump them both, but now was not the time and both her hands were full.

"That's all right, guys! I have those days, too. Happens to the best of us!"

Turning her attention back to the swarm, Ayna made a couple of feints, luring the remaining spiders into a compromising position by disappearing in yet another flash of lightning in front of them, only to reappear behind them, immediately stabbing their weak points with her electrified polearm.

But the spiders, again, were too many, and they also had far too many legs. It seemed that every time Ayna was able to stab one of them, another or maybe even two managed to hurt her back. These spiders are relentless! And gross!

"What is up with these spiders? They don't look normal. Or is this what passes for a normal spider in this place?"
