A dangerous situation; dealing with the berserkers!

95 / 125

He had been ambushed, and now he was on the back foot.

Dew glistened on the now vacant grass patch where the first of the two strange bandits had stood not a second before. As Canen's fist carved through nothing but air, the wily NPC sprung his trap.

A biting wind stirred; the freezing chill gripping Osris's senses. A sudden blue light emerged in the trodden grass below that was as bright as the sky, casting its blinding glare upon him. Canen tried to react, his heart skipping a beat as three jagged spikes of ice suddenly roared out of the ground.

Shit! The fighter seethed through clenched teeth as he shattered the icy stalagmites free with a powerful kick. These aren't ordinary bandits; they've got you pegged. Watch their magic. Buy some time.

The clearing in front of him was already starting to feel the effects of the magic from these oddly souped up NPC's. Thin veins of freezing ice seemed to want to choke the landscape. Beneath Canen's feet, snakelike tendrils of that same ice suddenly started to coil around his feet. Wrenching shards of the icicles from the ground and discarding them, confusion reigned. These enemies were more akin to an oppressive, higher levelled version not usually found in these parts. None of it made sense, but Canen's thought process was soon interfered with by the angry white cacophony from the first bandit.

There was only one way to deal with this.

A nebula cloud of black, electrified particles rose from the shrivelled ground beneath Canen's feet as he raised his hand right, blood spattering the blue frost as his left arm ran in red rivulets. He wove zephyrs of marbled black into his fist; a swirling cocoon of the arcane. His mind settled into the calm of an empty room, the tranquillity of a full moon. Words of power slipped past his lips, contained in a single breath.

Enpera Kurohitsugi.

The air itself momentarily shimmered as a dark lance of purple and black magic burst forth from his hand. Amongst the cacophony of electrical hissing, it tore straight towards the Cryomancer bandit, striking him hard in the shoulder.

He wasn't necessarily worried about burning through them when he saw them; rather, what stood out about the situation to Erick was that this man was outnumbered. Normally, he might have called out and asked to be certain that they needed the help. It was abundantly clear in this situation that was not the case. When he built the character, his priority was not offense. He wanted to ensure that others survived, and from the back line, bolster their defenses and enrich their fighting ability.

With a gilded aura radiating from his outstretched hands, Erick wove a protective cocoon around the young man who braved Eastern Brisshal all alone. "You look like you could use a hand or two," the blue haired youth called out to the man as he focused on erecting a proper barrier, seeking to reduce incoming damage to the not!Telgradian (because what even is that?).

For the moment, the enemies ignored his existence, but only because he seemed insignificant. How long that remained the case was up for debate. "Now you've got a shield up," he explained, in case the implications of his magic were lost on the man, "go ahead and take them out!"

With his Chronomantic aura settling in around the other Player, he might start to recognize faint overlays of the augmented soldiers that were dissonant, apart from their current reality. He could see, if he strained, a possible future play out seconds before the enemy acted.

Solaria could see two strangers fighting off interesting enemies. She'd never seen these peculiar looking bandits in this neck of the woods before! Drawing her sword, she was hell bent on joining this fight- even if it was two on two right now. Now, there were more players than NPCs. Solaria liked their odds.

As Erick was already taking care of the rear, Solaria rushed in to strike at the already damaged ice user. She cut through her enemy like butter, thanks to having just sharpened her holy sword a little while earlier. The ice user fell to the ground powerless and bleeding, Solaria grinning ear to ear as she turned to the two men.

"Sorry, I wanted to help too. These guys looked kind of tough, you know? Perfect for battle practice." She gripped her sword and stayed in a fighting position as she glanced towards the fire user. There were three of them, and one of him. "I think with us three, we've got this in the bag."

A dangerous opponent approaches!

85 / 125

(-10 retaliation damage due to protect.)

Buoyed by the assistance of the blue haired youth and, most recently, the green haired woman, Osiris silently steeled himself for the next assault. Talking, after all, could come later. The first buffed guard with cryomancer powers had fallen to her sword, and now the martial artist determined to himself that he would take on the pyromancer "the old fashioned way".

A white-hot fireball was next from the bandit. Normally such a spell would have taken time to cast, let alone project, but the augmented soldier made a mockery of this and sent the sphere thundering through the air at Canen with such blistering pace that Osiris was almost caught off guard. He stumbled slightly as it careened off of the barrier surrounding him and watched as it imploded into a cloud of smouldering ash. Clearly, this one had no intention on giving any ground, but if he was expecting Osiris to be intimidated he was going to be sorely disappointed.

The adrenaline coursing through his veins felt like magma and a breakneck run carried Osiris straight to his vulnerable foe. Planting his right foot and bringing his centreline into a perfect position, the martial artist struck with a venomous flurry of precision strikes. The first, an open palm strike, crashed into the exposed ribcage of the lumbering bandit, sending him reeling and gasping for breath. A lightning quick left punch to the temple almost caved his temple in as it connected sickeningly, and this the combination was finished with a devastating double punch to the man's heart. There was a thunderous cracckkkk as the breastbone shattered completely, sending shards of fractured bone straight into the chest cavity and puncturing the bandit's aorta.

The enemy crumpled to the floor like paper, motionless and silent.

And, is if the trigger for some apocalyptic event, the ground started to shake. The two dead bodies of the augmented soldiers levitated for a moment, before amalgamating into an undead, two headed monstrosity.

Uh-oh.

"Almoooost! Hang in there please!" LITTLE BIRB cried out. The battle wasn't over yet, Thankfuly unfortunately, but that meant she still had a chance to be useful. She still couldn't get used to all the auto systems that running around practically felt impossible and tripping about four times on her way to the source of clashes and slashes of steel and magic alike.

She underestimated how far they actually were from her location, given how her big ears picked it up from a distance hers wouldn't at all!

When she arrived, the first her eyes got greet with were the sight of a fierce warrior beating someone to a pulp like in one of these martial arts movies she's seen on the TV, only these blows carried weight this time around. It would have been a really really horrifying sight for her, but this was a game, right? Canen didn't just murder an actual person in cold blood, so that's fine.

Well, little that mattered when the actual spook came on an amalgama of bodies, a two-headed terror that froze her on spot and made her knees tremble, at least until she broke onto a sprint right behind @Solaria, waving her staff from side to side as she picked on the closest big sister figure the group had to protect her, like instincts demanded.

No time to think it twice, as LITTLE BIRB aimed the crescent top of her catalyst towards the monstrous double-bandit and sent a jolt of frost through the ground, the blades of ice exploding under it's feet and coating them on a thin layer of cold to slow down it's movement and motor skills alike.

"D-did it work? Did I help?" Third time's a charm. It worked, for once a spell did as she wanted!

The group was growing steadily, Erick observed, and burning through the Candle of Life just as quickly. Though he could accelerate the process by dealing damage on his own, Erick knew the risks that came with combat, and the dangers of death. Even if it were considered by some to be "playing too conservatively" or "safety gaming," he preferred the idea of keeping allies topped off rather than allowing their health to dip too low and chance one of them taking a wholly preventable plunge.

His fingers dug out in front of him and pierced the veil. With careful, practiced motions he stretched out his influence and interlaced his own, more pronounced Aura with theirs, incorporating them into his sphere of control. Inside of that infinitely vast, yet exceptionally small space, he was able to completely take wrest control from fate itself.

Because inside of that pocket, he commanded causality.

Gilded light washed over the other Travelers as he turned back time around them, erasing many mentions of wound or pain from the annuls of their history. "That thing looks ugly," he murmured. They would need every ounce of support he could offer, when two strange enemies contorted and became something much more horrific. And in Eastern Brisshal, at that!

Was the game really so eager to end lives that the very first area would spawn such a horror?

"Be careful," he called to the others. "I don't know what that thing is, but I'll keep watch over you."

She could sense as @Little Birb followed behind her, then watched as the cold frost exploded under the enemy. When the little girl asked if she'd been helpful, Solaria turned to her and gave a thumbs up. "You did great! And now, it's my turn!"

Solaria pressed down on her front foot and jumped into the air, slicing through the peculiar enemy with a devastating war cry. It shirked back after lashing out at her for injuring it. With the wounds that were just healed reopened, Solaria winced and took a few steps back.

"Damn... That smarts..." She grumbled. Looking behind her towards @Erick Styker, she smiled. "Thanks for the heal!" Glancing back at the enemy, she grimaced. "This fight's just getting started. Turning towards @Canen Osiris, she called out, "Any more tricks up your sleeve?"

She panted softly, starting to feel the pain take a toll. She gripped tighter on the hilt of her sword. "Okay, Hawnell... We've got this, right?" The sword seemed to respond to her knowingly, though no one else could hear. Still, she smirked at its response. "Yeah... We've got this, guys!"

"Any more tricks up your sleeve?" Called out the swordswoman who had bravely attacked the disgusting amalgamate. She unfortunately had taken some punishment as a result of the attack, and Canen grimaced for her as he saw her wounds. He flicked his eyes back to the blue haired member of their party momentarily, who was working his ass off to keep everyone protected, but there was only so much he could do in the time that he had.

One or two, yeah.

The warrior-scholar nodded, and then he stepped forth; two echoing footfalls disguising an esoteric incantation in a foreign tongue. His hands flashed to his sides, palms downwards.

In the midst of it all, he ground out a single word through grit teeth.

"Solus."

A flash of light washed through the darkness, dazzling and disorienting, disappearing almost as soon as he had conjured it. He took care to avoid it harming the swordswoman and the others, but still the wave of hazy heat bathed them in shimmering mirage. The spell wrought havoc on Cerbero's senses, casting a bright flash that assaulted its retinas and temporarily blinded it.

And then, for a handful of heartbeats, he became the wind.

At the touch of his thoughts, Canen's legs carried him straight to the amalgamate, who clumsily tried and failed to club the martial artist with an elongated, mutated arm. But the monk chose that exact moment to slide under the counterattack, rising up on the other side and striking the creature with a fierce, dark matter augmented kick. The force of the blow cracked the ground at their feet, sending splintered shards of earth and rock fizzing through the shadows. The heat generated from the vicious attack partially melted the beast's flesh from his ribcage, exposing an area of bone and sinew.

Never once did the smile leave his face as Canen hopped back to recuperate, putting enough distance between him and Cerbero that others could follow up.

LITTLE BIRB returned the nice thumbs up Solaria gave her with two of her own, letting her staff drop on the floor, euphoric as she was right now. "Be careful!" She warned as she watched her go to tackle the threat head on, a delayed yelp reminding her that, yes, she dropped her staff in the middle of a battle, and she quickly crouched to pick it back up and act as if nobody saw anything...

Luminosity washed over all of them like they were descendants of stars, and that included her apparently, eyes turning back to Erick, giving him a little wave to show her silent appreciation. To know these three had her back certainly made it more bearable to look at danger straight on. That, and the amount of distance between herself and the monstrosity.

And how she only tried to stare as little as possible...

"Ugly monster, back to the pit with you!" She shouted like a scaredy cat who tasted bravery for once and got used to it, or perhaps it was just Cain's Solus which emboldened her for a second?

To that end, she slammed the back of her staff against the ground, a cold mist extending itself towards the whole party, but ending strictly on Cain himself as crystal-like snowflakes begun to form around him, connected by a thin thread that barely could be noticed by the naked eye. Ethereal, almost like a phantom, and just as unaffected by Cain's movements as if it allowed him to pass by. The monster's attempt to retaliate, however, would be met by strong opposition as the frost would react back and strike it's warmed up body with subzero temperatures, freezing it's claws the further it tried to fight back, leaving the flesh brittle as both opposite elements assaulted it's body separately.

Whatever this thing was, it remained a persistent threat. Most enemies in this area did not force a Support to keep constant eyes on the party's health totals and status, which marked this as one of the most intense encounters yet for Erick. He dipped yet again into the timeline, thankful that his healing had been enough for at least one of the Travelers. Still, he knew that he if it became necessary to continue healing at this rate, he would not be able to do it alone.

So, in order to force the necessary outcome, he activated one of his special abilities to empower his next spell. "Resplendence," he intoned. The latent energies began to coalesce around his outstretched hands, drawing light previously outside of the visible spectrum into full view. An intense, golden warmth suffused the threads of fate that connected Erick to the other two, rendering it visible for the duration of the buff.

This time, when the tendrils of time coiled around the other two and began to walk them backward, diminishing the amount of damage they had received near to the point of trivializing the events that caused it at all, he cautioned. "Be careful, I can't keep this pace up forever," his warning would, ideally, provoke a sense of urgency from the group.

After all, they were the sword, and he the shield.

A small part of Solaria felt bad that she kept getting healed by Erick. She was, after all, a healer herself- but right now, she was in fight mode. Nothing would stop her from attacking the enemy- nothing unless an ally was in the midst of dying, at least.

Carefully, she thanked the others for their support, before rushing in for another attack. Getting in close range, she sliced open the unusual entity's forehead. Jumping back, she managed to escape a dark pulse of magic that was aimed at her from up close. "He's almost down for the count, guys!"

With a smile, she looked at her teammates. Sure, she had blood on her clothing, but she didn't care. These people were safe so far, and she was helping to keep it that way. What was more joyous than the ability to protect innocent lives from the likes of vile creatures, whether human or beast? Nothing, that's what.

Glancing to the others, she asked with a smile, "Who wants the last hit?"

The woman he would come to know as Solaria had asked for a finishing blow. The best way to kill a spider in the house was to burn the house to the ground, and Canen's prowess afforded such assurances. Without a look, a smirk, or a clever quip, the monk stepped quickly and clapped his hands, sending a blast of dark energy hurtling towards Cerbero.

Frustratingly, the amalgamate had slithered nearly as quickly as its original half seemed to, planting a seed of doubt that this foe may yet possess the ability to hasten as well. The dark matter should have torn him in half; perhaps the rush to execute the beast led to a sloppy casting by the monk. Suddenly, it had vanished, but its sinister laughter whispered behind Canen just as quickly. In a flash, down came a poison steeped arm - some blue-hued long limb made of a material that was decidedly NOT flesh - and it was caught in the crossblock of Canen's arms, which burnished a smile from the lithe warrior.

"Enough of this bullshit. You're no boss. You're not that fast." The taunt was followed by another lunging blow by Cerbero, which struck Canen in the left shoulder. The assault had knocked him back a full yard, but for damage had only managed to further infuriate Osiris, who immediately summoned two kris daggers to his palms from his supply of dark matter.

Yet another lumbering punch came at his right shoulder, but Canen was ready now. He moved with the speed of a predatory cat, spinning effortlessly about his own right foot in a low crouch. His left arm struck out violently, feeling the blade of his freshly-manifested kris dagger slice through the inner thigh of the oddity with a feeling of merely slight tension. This was a deep wound; if he had managed to catch the artery on the inner leg, it would likely prove fatal.

Without stopping his spin, Canen fired his left leg upwards, striking Cerbero in its exposed chest and knocking him from his feet. The heel hit the bone of the breast with a satisfying Smack sound, and the pressure from the chet helped him retain his balance. He spun to his feet, both daggers in his hands, poised as the viper to strike the deathblow. Placing his hand on the floor, the monk muttered an incantation and a pillar of dark energy suddenly washed upwards around Cerbero through the darkness. The spell wrought havoc on the being, casting a bright flash into the high trees and recessed parts of the clearing. Everything now blazed in molten pyres, alight with remnant white as a faint aroma akin to smouldering rubber persisted, and Cerbero was finally naught but ash.

Standing for a moment to catch his breath, Canen ignored both his companions at his side and the flaming wreckage of death and despair about him. The aches in his body slowly quieted as he slowly stretched his hips, knees, and back. His power was growing here. The orange fire lit his face warmly as night started to settle about the gathering once again, an odd quiet in the wake of devastation. He finally spoke to the others, who appeared to be stirring in the warmth.

"Thanks, all of you. No way I would have defeated that...thing...without your help."
