Mizuki was quite happy to have come across another person who'd be willing to go adventuring with her from time to time. Of course, both of them also had their own lives, so it wasn't like they were constantly on the road together, but at least MAI was curious enough about the world of Terrasphere that the two of them could plan expeditions together when their schedules gave them the opportunity.

The decision to head for the Hylands was sensible to Mizuki: she'd already gone there before, but she would rarely turn down the opportunity to visit the homeland of the caenis race, especially since the journey itself was exhilarating. And after MAI had professed an interest in astronomy the luna wolf had suggested that from the Hylands you could get a clearer view of the heavens than any other place that she knew of. With the two of them both getting something out of the trip it didn't take long for them to set off.

Of course, one of the things that differentiated Terrasphere from most standard MMORPGs was that there was no such thing as fast travel. If you wanted to go somewhere you had to get there with whatever means of locomotion were available to you. And the Hylands were on the other side of Astorea, which meant that they had some ways to walk. By the time they reached the foot of the massive plateau that rose high above the clouds autumn had already made way for winter, with a thick layer of snow covering the land. The trees had lost what leafs had remained, many-fingered figures of various colours giving the environment an almost ominous look.

The Hylands, however, dwarfed all of that. The steep slopes stood out like a dark grey wall against the white land and the pale sky, with the snow only claiming limited footholds: near the base of the plateau, there was still plenty of snow, as roads and cliffs zigzagged their way up the mountainside. The higher the eye went, the fewer of these horizontal spots remained, until the horizon-defying wall disappeared into the clouds that were heavy-laden with snow that had yet to fall.

Mizuki looked up at the task that lay before them, her mismatched eyes searching for the usual paths that were taken by those brave enough to challenge the Ascent. Now more than ever such a challenge could have lethal consequences, as the slipperiness of the slow made the climb more treacherous than usual, while the chill of winter would eat away at the fortitude of anyone who ventured outside of the towns and the villages.

It's a good thing neither of us is sensitive to the cold, or this would be a fool's errand.

She looked over to MAI as she said this. Thanks to her nature as a caenis Mizuki had a distinct advantage when it came to surviving cold climates. After all, her kin couldn't have made their home on top of the Hylands if a single harsh winter was enough to wipe them out. Meanwhile, MAI... well, she wasn't made of flesh and blood, was she?

I imagine you still need to keep your core warm or something?

While MAI's race might not make her as sensitive to temperatures it wasn't like mechanical devices were completely immune. Many a machine had broken down thanks to father winter's cruel touch. Oil could freeze, metal could crack, and engines could fall silent. This journey might be a good opportunity for both of them to find out just how resilient magia truly were.

Mizuki, meanwhile, was dressed as always: her standard outfit was already suited for colder climates. However, her hair and tail would look thicker and fluffier than usual, and a layer of pale fur adorned her hands and feet, with her feet even having taken on a digitigrade form to minimise her contact with the cold ground.

It has been quite a while since MAI and Mizuki met for the first time, but only now were they finally meeting up for their planned little adventure. Or perhaps 'little' was the wrong word to use here, given how the mountain in front of them towered far into the skies, imposing and unmoving. Apparently the beastfolk was already familiar with this place? That was both impressive and somewhat to be expected, given the fact that she was very clearly a veteran from well before the game's shutdown.

Even with her body, light as a feather under the influence of astramancy's control over gravity, the snow blanket still crunched and heaved with each step forward. The landscape in this world was just as whitened as the one outside of it, which was a bit of a shame. It wasn't a big deal, but the girl wasn't all that fond of winter for some years now, finding the gloomy dark skies only dampening her mood. This place, too, lacked sunshine, Sun blocked not only by the mountain, but the clouds that enveloped it as well.

Her own body was mostly covered just like the first time the two girls had met. Only today she was wrapped up in a long black cloak that danced behind her as the wind press up against her small body. Tattered at its edges, it was clear that the cloth had already seen many years of use. The magia did buy it from a store that was selling used items, after all. But, thankfully, it was still holding up as if it was completely new - warding off the snow and cold that came from it. Mizuki must have been even more resistant to the chill.

"Correction - Magia experience cold and heat the same as non-synthetic races and are not immune to its effects. This unit has no additional resistance to the cold."

Sure, there might have been no fear of things like frostbite, but if it weren't for her getup, the Magia would have probably been already dead due to exposure. The process was different from other races, but she would eventually screech down to a halt and perish all the same.

It sounded like in the time that they hadn't seen each other quite a lot had happened to MAI. Mizuki had been vaguely aware that the magia had been part of the fight at Camp Hope, although admittedly at the time she'd been in a state of mind where she didn't pay much attention to anything other than what she perceived as prey or packmates.

However, the two of them had also been part of the expedition that investigated the anomaly close to Vintergard, which meant that the caenis wasn't completely surprised when her companion spoke in a manner that could only be described as robotic. She'd done that during the simulated fight as well, although Mizuki hadn't had the opportunity to ask her what that was about back then. Maybe she'd just gotten into the idea of being a synthetic person?

Huh. I would've thought that the lack of biological parts would help with that. (She studied MAI's outfit more closely, now that she'd been informed that it might actually be important.) Will you be all right then? That cloak looks like it has seen better days.

It was strange to imagine that between the two of them, a robot and a wolf, the wolf would be better suited for this cold climate. Mizuki shook her head as she pointed at the wall that rose up before them, supposedly a mountain but large enough that it blocked the sky.

There's several paths that lead up, although none of them are easy. (Her finger went to where a streak of ice drew a thick line along the mountainside.) That waterfall feeds Lake Hotario. Now that it's frozen we could also try to climb that, but since it's made of ice it'd be risky, and if we got beset by flying monsters we'd be exposed.

For Mizuki the climb was doable, as her skillset was ideally suited for such a task, but that didn't mean she wasn't aware of the risks involved. She also never took her packmates with her on the climb: quadruped wolves were terrible climbers.

A strong gust of wind made her raise her hand to guard her eyes, grimacing slightly.

I'll be taking the lead, but if you've got any suggestions to make our journey easier I'm listening. We might be able to skip a lot of hardships if you reduce our gravity enough that we can climb straight up in places where the paths aren't as reliable.

"Observation - This game and its developers are doing their best not to create a vast divide between Magia and the other races that players can choose. Notable differences exist, but no obvious 'gameplay' advantages are present."

Or at least there were no such advantages without some sacrifices. One could even argue that Magia had it a bit worse, as they still had to eat and drink to maintain their functionality but, by default, could not taste anything. Thankfully, MAI was able to fix that with a new trait her body acquired, but it was certainly a new and rather unpleasant experience until that point.

"Reassurance - These clothes may look bad, but their functionality is at 100%, just like bikini armor which provides a great deal of actual protection. Not a problem."

It might have been a bit of a strange comparison, and the game might have been quite realistic in many aspects, but the equipment still had certain stats and abilities associated with it. Her cloak was no different and as long as it remained in one piece, it was good enough to cover her body and keep her warm for the most part.

"Explanation - This unit is capable of entirely negating effects of gravity and pushing objects or individuals with Aeromancy. There is, therefore, no reason to worry about this unit's ability to climb. Miss Ueno's gravity can be altered when necessary as well."

With that confirmation, they could probably take an even harsher route. As long as MAI didn't run out of energy completely, there was little that could completely stop them.

MAI's input did make sense, leading to Mizuki nodding in agreement. Since she was often treating Terrasphere as an alternate world rather than a game she didn't consider the balance perspective until it was pointed out to her.

You're probably correct, especially since in this world environmental hazards are also part of life.

As MAI compared the functionality of her cloak to the effectiveness of bikini armour, however, Mizuki scratched the back of her head.

Well... that's certainly true in games, but anyone who tries to rely on bikini armour in this world is in for a rude surprise. (She shrugged.) That said, I'll trust your judgement. Just make sure to tell me if you're starting to have trouble.

From Mizuki's experience, the effectiveness of equipment was directly linked to the state it was in. She herself fought using her own body, but she'd heard stories of people swinging around weapons that were about to fall apart and finding that maintenance was actually important.

I think the Ascent is too tall for us to rely on your magic the entire way, but there are some points where it could speed up our journey a lot. (She frowned.) As long as the harpies don't get in the way. Let's get moving.

With those words, she resumed walking, heading straight for the dark grey wall rising up in front of them. Curiously, despite the steep incline at which the ground rose up the forest didn't immediately come to an end: rather, the trees themselves began to stick out at an angle, thick roots burrowing into the ground to anchor them.

Also, I haven't had the opportunity to ask before, but why did your manner of speaking change?

As the two of them got closer to the mountain they were determined to climb the world around them remained mostly silent aside from the whistling of the winds between the branches. Winter had driven many creatures into shelter, some hibernating and others waiting for a good opportunity to scavenge for scraps. Nevertheless, some life was still present, with birds balancing on the branches of the barren trees before flying away when the two Travelers got close.

Mizuki walked in front of MAI, her body acting as a barrier to keep the cold winds that travelled down the sides of the mountain to meet them from the front from reaching her companion. This also meant that MAI could walk in the path that Mizuki left behind in the snow, her footprints almost identical to those of her quadruped kin.

Given Mizuki's response to the idea of bikini armor, MAI simply blinked twice before she looked straight at the wolf girl and spoke.

"Query - You have tested it yourself..?"

But that whole thing aside, MAI never intended to try and just fly the whole way. As Mizuki scaled the rocks, the Magia just sort of... hopped from one to the other. Each time her feet parted from the ground, she would gracefully float until she landed again, her body almost appearing weightless. While her 'flight' required her to de-attach herself from gravity completely, just lessening its effects was far more cost-effective and still allowed her to perform tricks like that. It was as if she was on the Moon rather than on Earth.

But whenever they could walk on more level ground, she would take the chance to shelter herself behind the wolf, who was clearly dealing with the weather far more easily. MAI did have a failsafe of sorts as a last resort, but using it right now would have been antithetical to its purpose. Then the inevitable question about her speech came. Everyone asked. At least everyone that wanted to speak with her at length.

"...explanation - This unit had interfaced with the remains of DEAD.Naught after the fight near Camp Hope in hopes of gathering additional information."

"Result - This unit was able to download a new learning module which has boosted its ability to memorize and recall to near-perfect levels. Partial corruption of speech patterns was a side effect."

"Statement - This unit is trying to speak normally, but words come out the way that they do. Abnormal speech patterns can be overcome in states of elevated emotions or by burning additional energy - not cost-efficient."

Mizuki snorted and shook her head in response to MAI's question, quickly dismissing the idea which had popped up in the magia's head.

Of course not. But others have, and even with limited methods of long-distance communication news still travels fast if enough people are interested. (She shook her head.) Of course, even if it's not very effective some people still like to show off skin.

From the very beginning, Mizuki had dressed in a manner that she believed practical, with tough leather and sturdy fabrics that would protect her even as she threw herself into dangerous situations. Her current outfit was the culmination of that practice, even though her personal development had reached a level where her own body was more resilient than the clothes she wore.

It was interesting to watch MAI jump as if she was weightless, although Mizuki did think that it was a bit early to start expending energy like that.

This is the easiest part of the journey, so make sure to conserve your stamina. Once we clear the treeline the troubles begin, and near the very end, we might be reliant on your abilities.

MAI's explanation of what had happened to her made Mizuki stop walking, turning around to face her companion with incredulity. Once the magia was finished speaking the caenis was silent for several seconds before speaking with a voice that was both concerned and less than pleased.

I understand that we need more information about what's going on with the magia in Vintergard, but didn't you consider the possibility that interfacing with that thing would corrupt you as well? (She folded her arms.) Travelers aren't immune to effects that mess with your mind, and that monstrosity had already assimilated a human Traveler.

Even if she didn't know MAI that well yet that didn't mean Mizuki wouldn't care about her well-being as she did for most people. The idea that MAI would have risked her sanity like that made her frown, her blue eye particularly cold before she sighed and shook her head.

Well, it's no business of mine in the end. I do hope you aren't reckless like that habitually though!

Given the circumstances, it was perfectly natural that the thing that appeared in MAI's mind was an image of Mizuki wearing the aforementioned bikini armor, showing herself off to all the denizens of TerraSphere. Alas, the demeanor of the real deal made that visage all but a simple delusion indeed.

"Opinion - This unit can understand the desire to stand out and show off. In a world where individuals can sculpt themselves a perfect body with consequence not carried over into reality."

Well, the Magia was still far too self-conscious to do something like that. She still noticed herself being far more outgoing than in real life, but there were still limits to what this new persona of hers could be and accomplish.

That said, when Mizuki stopped and effectively blocked the girl's path only so that she could hand down a scolding, even if well-intentioned, MAI would not have it. Her eyes went to the side briefly before she would hop on, easily getting by the wolf beastgirl and getting ahead a bit before turning around, the wind picking up and blowing wind into her back and past the flowing coat in Mizuki's direction.

"Rebuttal - This unit had weighted the risks against the benefits of avoiding a scenario of more Starcalled being assimilated or defeated. This unit made a choice based on this calculation."

With that, she turned around again and continued on the path.

Mizuki had been out of line to scold MAI like that, but at the same time, she hadn't expected the magia to blow her off so flippantly. Turning her head she watched the smaller female first jump over her head, then turn around to explain that she'd considered the risk worth the potential benefits. Narrowing her eyes the luna wolf glared at MAI, opening her mouth before closing it again and letting out a short growl.

Whatever.

She would have said something more constructive, but clearly MAI wasn't in the mood to listen. Instead she'd just follow after the magia, letting her take the lead for now as she looked at their surroundings. The barren trees were becoming more sparse as they slowly went higher than higher, and as she looked behind them she could see they were already a dozen meters above ground level. That was good progress, but from here on out every meter would take more effort than the last.

It wouldn't take much longer before the trees were left behind, giving them a better view of their surroundings. This also meant that they'd reached the point where they couldn't just head straight for the mountain, instead having to pick one of the many level paths that crawled up the steep mountainside. The wind now practically came from straight above, occasionally carrying a wave of snowflakes with it.

Mizuki remained silent for a while, but once they'd left the trees behind and were properly scaling the mountain she spoke up again, although her tone wasn't quite as amiable as before.

Since we're not in a hurry we'll have to take breaks every so often, and stop for the day at the halfway point. If we rushed we could probably do it within a day, but there's earth elementals near the top we'll need to be ready for.

At some point, a small drone would squirm its way from beneath MAI's coat and start floating right by her side as they moved up the mountain. And while she did not say anything about its purpose, it was probably connected to the harsher environment. Indeed, the Magia was monitoring her own vitals at all times, which was made much easier by both her mastery and race.

"Understood - This unit will rely on Ueno Mizuki to determine appropriate times for rest or pause."

Since the beastfolk seemed to be the expert in this, MAI didn't think it even a question as to which one of them should actually lead the entire expedition. Sure, she might have gotten physically ahead during her few hops, but that wasn't about to last. Hell, she had no idea where to even go so as soon as there was more than one possible path to follow, she would step and step aside, allowing Mizuki to get ahead again.

Once MAI stepped aside to let Mizuki take the lead again the luna wolf would do so, walking past the smaller magia as she looked out ahead. The wind was only getting stronger as they got higher up, the cold skies smashing against the mountainside and flowing downwards as if a fall made of air. If it wasn't for her wolf-like fortitude Mizuki would be quite uncomfortable by this point, and given that MAI apparently wasn't more resilient to this weather than non-magia the huntress would have to make sure her companion didn't suffer too much.

Of course, that also means you must be quick to inform me if you're struggling. I don't know much about magia, so I'll be reliant on you to keep an eye on yourself.

With biological companions Mizuki could spot the signs that the cold was getting to them. With MAI, she wasn't certain that she'd be able to tell until the magia's body parts began to shut down, at which point it'd most likely already be too late.

Measuring the different paths available to them in her mind Mizuki took several seconds to decide, at which point she headed for one which looked relatively safe. The trail went up at a relatively slow incline and was wide enough that even if one slipped there was plenty of opportunity to recover. Of course, further up the path would narrow, but it was still one of the safer options.

We'll be saving any tricks for tomorrow. For now, just focus on not wasting any energy.

She pointed at the path they'd be taking in case MAI wasn't entirely clear on that, then resumed walking. However, once they reached the first turn she'd signal for MAI to stop, turning around to take in the view.

...It might start snowing soon. Better get a good look at the scenery before the weather gets in the way.

"Affirmative - This unit is actively monitoring its internal temperature and vital functions. All parameters within acceptable levels."

For now, at least. Whether that would change at all was the big question since MAI didn't really have any experience in this kind of terrain. It was Mizuki who suggested this trip in the first place, so it would be somewhat unfortunate if she froze to death here, though. Perhaps there was more riding on that coat of hers than was initially assumed.

As for the path, the Magia quietly followed after her new grumpy wolf friend, her step still light with the effects of her gravity control. In fact, she realized that the beastfolk maybe didn't quite realize how the Magia operated when it came down to energy.

"Statement - It is imperative to take into account that the Magia do not recover energy in the same manner as other species. Energy is absorbed from other nearby sources of mana, primarily stones of power that exists across Falderen and a few other places."

This meant that traditional rest would not exactly be all that helpful in restoring much energy for the girl.

Mizuki's mismatched eyes glanced towards the small drone that was now following MAI around. She didn't know what it did, but the magia's words gave her enough of a hint that she suspected it to be some kind of monitoring device. She considered asking, but after several seconds of internal debate shrugged to herself. Maybe later.

Good. There'll be caves along the way we can rest in, and there'll be some tough plants we can use to start a fire.

Truthfully it would be optimal to gather some branches and twigs down below before heading up, but Mizuki wasn't feeling like lugging all that along, even if MAI probably could have made it all weightless. Worst came to worst she could use her own body heat to help MAI stay on temperature, and it wasn't like they were planning to take days for this trip.

As the two of them walked further more and more snow covered the path, making it harder to find spots of solid rock and soil to step on. Eventually, the two of them would just have to accept the transition, occasionally walking across patches of snow where Mizuki's footsteps crunched down on the white cold while MAI's lightened feet barely left a mark.

The wolfess came to a halt, however, when MAI explained that magia didn't recover energy through rest, but rather through absorbing ambient magical energies. That... could pose a problem.

...I see. How long can you last without recharging? What counts as a source of energy?

She continued walking, but now she was thinking about how to deal with this. If MAI could recharge from the magic of allies there wasn't any problem, but otherwise, she hoped MAI had covered her own needs and brought along some of those rocks she mentioned. As for the Hylands... Mizuki had never really been interested in magic rocks, but the valley was blessed with many things so she had no doubt MAI would find something up there that would help her.

It seemed that even with supernatural abilities on their side, this really would be quite the trip. MAI had never hiked in a weather this hostile, but she was not unfamiliar with mountains and touring paths leading all over them. Of course, she never had to get some extra rest in a cave or risk freezing to death. As for the concerns brought forward by Mizuki, they were easily addressed.

"Answer - This unit can absorb magical energy from any source of mana, including air. However, the recharging speed depends on mana saturation, therefore absorbing from air is not advised."

After a few more steps, the girl tried to get a bit closer to Mizuki before she added one last bit.

"Ammendum - This unit was hoping to get a chance to hug Ueno Mizuki's tail and recharge from her mana."

Was that weird? It was probably weird. Alas, Kyra had awakened something in the Magia. Now, MAI would take any chance to interact with the flufiness of certain beastfolk. And unfortunately for her, Mizuki was a wolf well equipped for the winter and that meant her fur must have been extra nice.

The fact that MAI could recover her energy from any magical source was a huge relief, since it meant that Mizuki wouldn't have to worry about her companion reaching critical levels due to an absence of magical rocks. It also meant that Mizuki herself could serve as an energy source, so truthfully the only thing the two of them needed to do to keep both of them up and running was to keep Mizuki fed and rested.

That does make things a lot easier. For a moment I was worried that we'd have to delay our journey to collect enough rocks to act as batteries.

It also meant that if MAI needed recharging it could be combined with Mizuki making sure the female magia didn't freeze to death. Given that she was already thinking of this MAI's next words were somehow simultaneously baffling and not surprising at all, which was why it took several steps for Mizuki to blink, come to a halt, and turn to look at MAI with a stunned gaze.

You want... to hug my tail?

The tail in question twitched as she said that. The luna wolf went silent for several seconds, then started to chuckle, forgetting that she'd been annoyed at MAI before that point.

That's... not a request I expected, but it would be the easiest way to recharge you. (She smiled before shaking her head.) I don't mind, but let's wait until we take a break. Even if you've decreased your weight walking while clinging to my tail must be difficult.

It wasn't like Mizuki's tail was at ideal hugging height, after all.

That said, do you know how much energy you've got remaining? I'd prefer it if we kept our breaks to a little under half an hour at a time, so it'd be best if we timed our breaks so you can fully refill within that time.

The reaction was probably warranted. Springing up such a request out of nowhere was bound to sound either insensitive, rude, or outright silly. It was probably good that Mizuki perceived it as the last one. And even if the wolf couldn't see it, being ahead and all, MAI nodded a few times toward everything she had said.

"Correction - This unit cannot efficiently absorb mana when active. Environment of the cave and a resting state would be optimal for recharging."

In other words, they basically had to cuddle up for a bit, and that would recharge the girl instead of sleeping. Some would probably see that advantage, others as the direct opposite. That said, things weren't exactly dire in any way.

"Information - This unit's energy levels deplete faster with the use of complex actions and mastery abilities. Currently maintaining normal operational levels, energy will last a while."

It would probably even last all the way up to the top if she really tried to conserve what she had right now, but Mizuki did say that they would be making at least one stop, so there was no need to do anything of the sort.

"Ammendum - 30 minutes will not be enough to recharge energy fully. Energy recharge rate is roughly equal to the recharge of sleeping humans. 8 hours will net a full recharge. No need to stay in a cave for that long. Energy is still depleting slowly."

Your charging speed is affected by whether you're active or passive? (She sounded a bit surprised by that, and didn't really think before speaking again.) Most appliances only take longer to charge while active because they're expending energy at the same time that they're receiving it.

Only after those words had left her mouth did it occur to her that comparing a magia to something like a kitchen appliance or a phone might be considered a tad rude. However, the words were already out there, so she could only blush and quickly look forward again.

A-ahem... what could be considered a while?

It was promising that MAI wasn't about to fall over, but her answer wasn't quite as specific as Mizuki had hoped. But she wasn't about to be pushy about that when she'd just ran her mouth without thinking.

8 hours to fully recharge... the luna wolf ran the numbers in her head as she resumed walking.

That's 6-something per cent each half an hour then. Depending on how long it takes for you to expend that much energy while running on minimal usage that might work out, but most likely we'll need to use the midway stop to recharge you fully. Do you suffer any side effects from a low charge?

MAI had already explained that she suffered from the cold and other environmental effects in a manner similar to biological lifeforms, but did she also get tired and sleepy? Mizuki didn't know.

As the two of them discussed the finer points of magia physiology and how to plan around them the path ahead of them became narrower as they headed higher and higher up the mountainside. By this point the lands were stretching out below them, the forest surrounding the Ascent now small enough that one could easily forget that each tree was several meters tall. While they were making good progress that also meant they were now reaching the part of the journey where they might get spotted by the natural inhabitants of the cliffs...

Mizuki's ears flicked as she heard the sound of wingbeats in the distance, which immediately put her on edge. What might have been a harmless sound down below was a warning on the cliffsides. If you were lucky it was some smaller bird that was sturdy enough to endure the environment, but more often than not if you heard wingbeats it meant something had noticed your presence and wanted a piece of you, often literally.

...Something's heading our way. Flying, so most likely either a Reaper or a Harpy.

She'd already come to a halt, moving closer to the stone wall formed by the mountain they were seeking to climb. She motioned for MAI to move closer to the wall as well, away from the edge where they would be more vulnerable to aerial attacks and were also in greater danger of falling off. If nothing else, falling would set back their progression significantly.

Indeed, talking about common appliances when the topic of Magia was on the table wasn't exactly what MAI would consider accurate. She was, at the very least, a very decent tabletop computer! But putting that aside, more explanation was clearly necessary.

"Explanation - This unit is uncertain as to why the creators of this game force the Magia to remain largely inactive to recharge. Additionally, when fully charged, energy reserves are comparable to how long players of other races can remain active. Low charge is not accompanied by any negative effects. However, if energy falls to zero, I will shut down until my body very slowly accumulates at least 10% of my total energy reserve."

That was quite a lot of talking in one short burst. Mizuki probably gathered most of it, though. Despite her more... brutish appearance, she was proving herself to be quite smart and understanding. The main takeover might have also been that the developers of this game clearly wanted the Magia to be comparable to other races without any obvious major advantages or even disadvantages.

That said, when the world suddenly stopped again, MAI nearly bumped into the other girl's back. If something was approaching, and Mizuki was acting the way she was, that probably meant that this something was hostile. The drone that hovered by the Magia's head made some distance as well, quickly scanning the snow-covered surroundings. Both it and MAI caught it nearly at the same time - a heat signature of a humanoid creature headed for them.

"Warning - small humanoid approaching via aerial means. This unit does not know what a Reaper is, but the heat signature is comparable to typical depictions of a harpy. Initiating Cyberangel protocol."

With that, the girl actually hopped a step back. Instead of falling down onto the stones and snow, however, she remained in the air as several holographic circles appeared around her, forming a sphere with a bunch of text and various images floating about. It was all almost reminiscent of some control station, only created directly around the Magia girl.

A moment later, the holographic sphere shrunk briefly before it expanded again, sending out a wave of energy that washed over Mizuki. Strange, she would feel a bit stronger afterward as if the energy of the wave seeped into her body and was now joining in on the fun.

"Request - This unit asks for the thread to be dispatched in a timely manner, thank you."

MAI's explanation really did make it sound like the developers had put serious effort into keeping the magia from diverging too far from the other races. That bugged Mizuki, as she preferred to treat this world as real and didn't like to think too much about the fact that technically it was a game, no matter how advanced, with developers who might include things which didn't make sense from a world perspective but existed for the sake of game balance.

She hoped that there was another explanation which didn't break her immersion as much.

It does sound like it's all very similar to the other races, yes. I think that last part is also like how we faint if we become too exhausted, although overall it sounds like a less unpleasant experience for you.

The way MAI talked about it she didn't have to deal with feeling tired or drowsy, or waking up with a headache. Maybe not too big of a difference, but Mizuki could still think of some people who'd become a magia in a heartbeat for the few advantages it did have.

MAI's frail figure combined with her decreasing her own weight meant that Mizuki barely noticed the magia walking into her, especially now that she was focusing on the wingbeats that were getting louder as the owner approached them. Now that she was actively looking for it the luna wolf quickly spotted the flying figure in the distance, although it was too far away for her to make out many details. Fortunately MAI had her own sensory abilities, which allowed her to conclude that it was a harpy.

I'll explain what a Reaper is another time. Also, Cyberangel?

That was a rather fancy term for a technique, which made Mizuki tear her eyes away from the distant target to instead watch MAI float in mid-air with holographic symbols taking shape around her. Given that MAI was on her side she wasn't concerned with the expanding wave, instead just blinking as she felt the energy flowing into her body.

Understood. I'll see what I can do.

Harpies weren't particularly strong, especially when alone, but they could be very annoying due to their aerial skills. Mizuki stepped forward to position herself between MAI and the approaching harpy, designating herself as the frontline in this fight as MAI had seemingly taken on a supportive role.

The harpy wasn't hindered by any of their actions, of course, quickly approaching as she entered a dive, wings folded close to her body. Her green feathers stood out amidst the grey and white of the winter sky, her pretty face a stark contrast to the playful malice in her eyes as she closed in.

Once the harpy was mere seconds from contact Mizuki crouched, tensed her muscles, and jumped up to meet their feathered foe, jumping quite a bit higher than one might expect. The harpy was certainly surprised by it, squawking as she spread her wings to slow herself down and react to the sudden counterattack. The wolf struck quickly, once she was in range kicking the green-feathered menace with both feet and launching herself back towards the cliffside at the same time, clinging to the stone with hands and feet as her claws managed to pierce even that sturdy surface.

The harpy let out a louder screech as Mizuki's kick sent her hurtling through the air, frantically flapping her wings before regaining control of her flight. Her movements weren't as graceful as before, however, and her expression had gone from playfully malicious to murderous. Whatever drove her to attack the two of them in the first place had her shake off the aftereffects of the kick and zip straight towards MAI, spinning around so she could bring her sharp talons to bear to try and tear open the magia's exterior and spill her synthetic organs.

There wasn't exactly much time to explain things in great detail during active combat, even if there was just one opponent at the moment. Still, Mizuki obviously wanted to know the answer so MAI would provide it as she prepared another ability of hers.

"Answer - Cyberangel protocol is responsible for all supportive actions this unit can perform. This is currently the only available protocol during active combat."

In other words, she was only able to support at the moment. Unlike herself, Mizuki did not return the favor of explaining what a reaper was right away, instead focusing on taking down the opponent. Although the Harpy managed to withstand the attack, showcasing that it was tougher than the small and frail-looking frame suggested. The wolf girl seemed to have suffered some small damage as well.

MAI had already prepared her next ability when the enemy suddenly tried to move around and strike at the support, someone who was obviously not as well equipped in handling direct confrontation. That said, the Magia was not defenseless. She moved backward a few meters when her core heated up, a holographic image of something akin to a clockface appearing behind her.

Almost the moment those talons made contact with her, MAI would vanish in a quick burst of blue light. All that remained was a sound of ticking clock, until a few seconds later, the girl reappeared in her original position before she moved. This left the Harpy behind her, making it impossible for the feathered woman to make another attack due to her momentum. At the same time, another wave pulsed.

This one left several glowing markings on Mizuki, quickly regenerating her energy and even closing what wounds she might have had, perhaps even leaving her in a slightly better shape than she was in at the start of the encounter.
