This was a bad idea. Xu Huifang's thoughts spiraled out of control. As she calmly went through the character creation process, a hundred warnings were made to herself by her creeping fears, the doubting abyss that hid within her. You know a lot of people have died from this game... She decided to make her decisions on her avatar's appearance as close to her own as possible. The cold, emotionless Huifang was used to being in spacious and empty rooms, with light gray walls and floors, and soft and easy lighting. She had been spending more time in her office than at home since her first day at work. ...this isn't going to end well, Huifang.

As a shooting star announced her presence in the game world, Ayna Nietzsche slowly opened her eyes. The first thing she noticed, rather immediately tinkered with, was the User Interface, which she was very interested in. Although she had expected to see the same as soon as she logged in, she continued playing with it post-character creation. Even though she would never say it out loud, especially in the presence of the game developers, Ayna thought it was a brilliant system. The Investigation Mode in particular piqued her curiosity, her mind already wandering through thoughts of its potential applications if used outside of the hobby. How could this impact my field, I wonder? Would it make work easier? Or would it make me no longer necessary?

That last thought saddened her for a bit. Her entire life revolved around her work. To be replaced by a machine, even if the system was brilliant, no less genius, still made her feel a little bit depressed. But all of that was immediately replaced by her appreciation through cold logic of a more practical and most likely more efficient way of doing things. If it means that my field will develop, and progress, then even without me, it should be made to endure.

She was soon interrupted in her reverie by a sound coming from behind her. Slowly, she turned around, not even bothering to defend herself. It was all just a game, right? There was no need to be so wary of things to be discovered.

"Wha-? What is all this this?" Unlike the calmer and more collective Xu Huifang, Meera Sharma struggled with all the options presented to her. She wasn't as tech savvy as most people, having spent more of her life working with her hands and people. Meera wasn't that bad when it came to technology, though, as all that new stuff had been useful to her volunteer work, so she tried to learn as much of them as she could. She's always been, actually, one of the more tech savvy people in her field, though that meant little when the technology necessary to them were never that complicated.

Games, however, were another matter. Not a lot of them have been remotely required in her line of work, helpful, so she was a little bit slower than the common man. Or in this case, woman. Meera herself hasn't played much augmented reality or even kept herself updated on the newer games. The last thing she played was a farm simulator, and it wasn't as complicated as something like Terrasphere. "I need to find out what happened to my friend, though, and maybe keep the rest of my friends safe from this game, if it's even the culprit in the first place!"

With a hands balled into fists, she did her best to make into augmented reality her perfect version of herself. Or as perfect as she could make her. With a curvier body than she had, one that she had always wanted but never got, something that she will ever deny has been bothering her whenever it popped up randomly in her head. Once she was done, she found herself in a strange but peaceful field, a random rabbit turning to her before scurrying away. "Wow, this game looks so good!"

It didn't take long for Meera, now the beastfolk Kamala Graham, to start reaching out for random things, trying to feel this version of augmented nature. Between every ooh and ahh, her feet was taking her to places she didn't even know. At least places still within this point of origin. Pushing through some undergrowth, she made a loud ack! as she rolled into another area, another clearing, and realized someone else was nearby.

"O-Oh, hey! Hello there," she tried her best to appear friendly, waving at a possible friend. Was she real, though? Or just something created by the game. "Are you...from around here?" Please don't attack me, please don't attack me, please don't attack me!

Ayna just stared at the other person, looking them over from head to toe, as if memorizing their appearance. She wasn't quite sure yet whether they were an NPC or an actual Player but then she had a thought. Would it be more likely for an NPC to be around a place where new Players spawned? Most probably not. The earliest NPC would probably be somewhere a bit farther than where they were, most likely in the first town, the closest town, they'd come across.

Heaving a sigh, she contemplated their current predicament. This other Player... They were most likely another newbie as well. Just like her. Would they be useful to her? Or would they just be dead weight? Ayna did not intend to be burdened by a stranger who wouldn't know her place. She's had enough of those people at work.

We're the same race, I think? Her eyes were quick to realize the similarities in their respective appearances, even though they had more differences. For one, the colors of their hair were not the same. Their bodies were also somewhat different. But maybe that's where the similarities end.

"Hello," she finally acknowledged her verbally, taking a few steps to approach the stranger. Her movement was rigid, though, as if her joints were made of metal like an unpolished robot just activated. "I'm not. I just..." Ayna cut herself off, but only to whisper the next pair of words that came out of her mouth. "...logged in."

That should be an introduction friendly enough, right? She should pick up on that hint if she wasn't an NPC.

At first, Kamala shuddered as the strange but very intimidating woman approached her. She didn't even notice they were the same race, already forgetting that she had chosen for her avatar to be Beastfolk. The sight of a wolf woman walking towards her made her gulp. She started to brace herself for an attack, repeating a mantra meant to calm herself, steel herself, at the impending hurt. It's just a game, it's just a game, it's just a game!

But nothing happened. The other woman didn't strike her. There wasn't even anything remotely violent that had come from the stranger. Her movements were very, well, rigid, and the way she spoke seemed less threatening and more...simplistic if that is even the proper way to describe it. Overall, Kamala just felt herself speaking to a robot, or more appropriately in the context of this world, an NPC.

Except she said something about logging in, and right then and there, Kamala realized that this woman was no NPC. With eyes wide in amazement, Kamala began to understand that the person in front of her was another Player. She was immediately filled with excitement from head to her little toesies, suddenly making small claps with her previously shaken hands. "Oh, I knew it!" She did not. Not before that point. "You're a Player, too, right? Just like me!"

Kamala then extended her hand for a shake, eager to make a new friend in this new world. "I'm Kamala Graham! I come in peace!"

Kamala Graham. Ayna mouthed the other Player's name without actually saying it. She wondered if it was her real name or just her in-game name. Doesn't sound like a real name, but maybe it's just from a place I've never been to. Ayna has been to many places but they were mostly around her home nation of Singapore. She hasn't really needed to reach out and meet people from other communities, instead only ever needing to interact with her own people. A people person, Ayna was not.

"Ayna," she took Kamala's hand and shook it firmly not unlike what she usually does when meeting a business associate. To be fair, though, it was the only kind of handshake Ayna knew, and she tended to use the same with everyone else and for every purpose that required a handshake. "Ayna Nietzsche."

Her introduction was a little stiff, perhaps stiffer than most, but this was the first time they were meeting and she wasn't exactly a business associate. If anything, Ayna wasn't quite sure how useful this pretty woman was going to be to her own journey in this world. At least she thought she was cute. "So... What now?

"What now?" Kamala repeated her question, not entirely sure what else to say. Or answer. Like Ayna, she was new to the game as well and may even have the same knowledge of it as her. Probably even less. Kamala wasn't that much of a gamer. This was the first game she's played in years. "I don't know, to be honest. Maybe we should go somewhere else?"

She looked around them, hoping to see something, anything, that indicated where to go next. Unfortunately, even with her seemingly heightened Awareness, definitely better than she had originally in the real world, she still couldn't make out anything worth of note. Just some trees, bushes, and critters hopping away.

Her mind wandered back to the other beast woman's name. Ayna Nietzsche. It didn't sound real. Her last name was definitely real but no one with that last name would be walking around in this game using their real last name. Who even uses their real name in this game? "What would you like to do...now?"

"Where would we go?" Ayna asked further. She was trying to gauge the usefulness of the otherwise attractive character, but so far, she was disappointed. What did she expect, anyway? They were both new to the game. That much was obvious. She just thought she'd be more aware of these things. Or maybe I should be the one to know more. I did my research, after all. Did she? What kind of person jumps into a dangerous game without doing some research?

Crossing her arms across her chest, she watched her scramble with answers. She did seem like she was trying her best, looking around them, as if hunting for clues or directions. That at least inspired Ayna to try the same. So far, nothing. It quickly dawned on her that she wasn't that great with looking for things in this game. Maybe just not yet. Everything just felt strange and distant and foreign to her. Maybe it was just her, having spent more time trapped in an office than basking in the glory of Mother Nature. No, it's the trees' fault.

What would I like to do now?
Ayna considered that question for a time, not paying that much attention to ignoring @Kamala Graham for a time, for longer than what would be considered socially acceptable. But then she started walking towards her, a neutral expression on her face, before raising an arm in the air, but instead of striking her, placed it carefully on her head. Pat, pat, pat. This feels nice.

"East? West?" Kamala wasn't quite sure why @Ayna Nietzsche was interrogating her this hard. She was new to the game, too! Or was she actually thinking that someone like Kamala was an NPC? That would explain a lot. No, it didn't, but Kamala wanted so bad to have something quick and easy round her confusion and concerns up. As if they were sheep made to be herded. She continued scrambling through her brain for answers that did not come. "North? South? Anywhere you'd like, really. I think there should be a town close by...right?"

Do these games just drop you in the middle of nowhere without much help? Of course, not! Kamala might not have vast experience in playing games, but she knew people. Whoever made this game, they wouldn't be so bad as to just drop Players in random places with no trace of civilization, or more accurately no camp or station, to stay safe while they regain their bearings. Or maybe this was it, this is the place, just this small clearing.

But then Ayna suddenly walked towards her, arms raised in the air. For a split second, Kamala's eyes grew wide, fearing the most. Was she going to strike her? Right then and there? For not knowing what comes next? No, no, no! Please no! She closed her eyes at the same time Ayna's hand came down, but a few seconds later, pain did not follow. Kamala opened her right eye, curious as to why she couldn't feel the slap. Can I not feel pain in this world?

What she actually felt next was Ayna patting her. On the head. Like she was a pet. What...is happening?! She just stood there, awkwardly receiving the pats, like a scared little doggie, which she was, to be fair, until she felt it had gone too long, her curiosity unsatiated. "Uhm, Ayna? What are you doing?"

"Oh, uhm," Ayna wasn't quite sure what she was doing. For once in her life, she was free to just do whatever she felt like doing. This was the first time in a long while she had this good of a feeling. Freedom was a distraction back where she came from. In this world, it seemed it was anything but. "Just feeling things out."

She took a good long look at @Kamala Graham to gauge whether she was enjoying their...whatever this was. I wonder what it feels like? There was an innocent curiosity within Ayna. People might find getting pats offensive, but if pets loved it, then surely humans would as well? What was so wrong about getting pats? Especially if it comes from a place of love or wonder or awe? Nothing. It was just an innocent gesture. People just love complicating things, overthinking, as if something that, in the grander scheme of things, would not matter matters the most.

"Do you want to fight?" She readied her weapon, already expecting the other Player to say yes.

Confused but game.

Just feeling things out? To say that Kamala was confused by that answer would be quite an understatement. To be fair to @Ayna Nietzsche, however, they were both new to the game, and Kamala supposed this was just her attempt to try and see if she could feel her beyond the pixels and the aesthetics. When their eyes met, she couldn't help but give her new friend a warm smile. She could interpret that as her enjoying getting the pats, but more than that, Kamala was just happy they were getting along fine. At least that was until she asked if she wanted to fight. "Fight? You? What for?"

An ice bucket of confusion was dropped over Kamala's head. As she took a step back, pulling away from Ayna, she watched her with curious eyes. What was she up to? But then she immediately recalled the same excuse she gave out a while back and that confusion slowly turned to her understanding. Kamala has always been slow, especially when it came to rationalizing things, so she was used to taking a second or two to rationalize what she could. Ayna had been nothing but friendly towards her. Perhaps she just wanted to play. "I mean, if you'd like to test out our skills, I suppose I can do that with you."

With that, Kamala jumped back, and for the first time, summoned the sapling sprite Greenleaf the Bold, a Sprout wielding a sharp blade made out of a tiny magical leaf, to make the first attack albeit less intense than normal. She just wanted to show Ayna that she's not as weak as others often took to her. She could put up a fight. They'll be fine, right?

Popping off! Hehehe!

"For science," was the first thing that came to Ayna's head, so it was also the first thing she said. In the real world, she would often go over the things that push past her lips, but in this world, she was starting to feel that it would be just a waste of time to second guess things. After all, they would not know each other in the real world. They would just be acquainted in here, and in here, they could be someone else, someone they've always wanted to be but never could. "Just to...feel more things out, test stuff."

Ayna just stood there as @Kamala Graham prepared to attack, gripping the hilt of Calamity's Light tightly. She had already planned something in mind, not a counterattack but something more along the lines of an evasive maneuver. After all, she wasn't sure what kind of magic the other Beastfolk had. But whatever it was going to be, she needed to time her reaction accordingly. And she did: As soon as Kamala's magic seemed to fire off, Ayna dodged whatever it was supposed to be, disappearing in a flash of lightning before reappearing right behind the other Beastfolk.

❰ Crowfeather Thunderbolt Callspell ❱

"What was that?" She calmly asked before bringing her lightning-charged polearm to thrust into Kamala. Ayna made sure she wasn't aiming for anything that could critically injure her new acquaintance, even if they were just playing the game. She only wanted to test her kit out. Anything more would be unnecessary.

As gentle as she could, Ayna tried to pierce Kamala's side. It would heal. Eventually. If need be, she could always bring her to someone who could heal her faster. If there even was one nearby. But it was all just a game. It was not a serious battle, not a fight to the death. They should both be fine. "You should be fine."

Got tased, bro.

Kamala was caught surprised when @Ayna Nietzsche just disappeared in a flash of lightning, only to reappear somewhere else. She did not intend to hurt them, and a part of her was relieved that her attack did not make any contact, but she was still in awe that the other girl seemed to have such cool-looking abilities. She wasn't envious, though. Not by any means or definition. Kamala was perfectly fine where she was, with what she had, but it was still very cool to see someone teleport in front of her.

"What was THAT?"

Unfortunately for Kamala, her awe left her vulnerable to Ayna's shock, with the blade of her new friend's polearm finding its mark against her side. Wincing, Kamala stepped back, taking a moment to check on herself. She was bleeding. I'm bleeding? If only she knew how to change the settings.

Although hearing Ayna's reassurance was strange, they were in a middle of a fight, after all, she composed herself and used her words as a figurative cane with which to balance her gait. Doubt and fear tried to creep up on her but she staved them off, not wanting to lose so quickly. They still needed to "test" things out, right? I can't just quit after the first round! And so Kamala pushed forward, pushing herself beyond her perceived limit.

❰ Greenleaf the Bold ❱

"Ready or not, here I come!"

Maybe telling her supposed opponent that, warning her, was not such a smart idea, but Kamala felt like doing so still. She did not want to win in an underhanded manner. If she ever gets to win. Greenleaf the Bold resurfaced once more, still invisible to those with low Awareness and Spirit Magic, charging at Ayna as green spiritual light, wispy and vague. If they were lucky, he'd make contact.

Oof, these low rolls.

"Just a quick movement spell."

Ayna just watched @Kamala Graham as she tried to regain her bearings. She wanted to ask if she was all right but didn't want to offend her by assuming the worst. They were in a fight. You don't ask another fighter if they're fine right in the middle of it. Besides, she believed Kamala was strong enough to take care of herself. She did not need anyone to baby her.

And Ayna was right. No sooner than she expected, her fellow Beastfolk was already raring to go. Ayna tried to pull the same trick again, disappearing and reappearing in flashes of lightning, but this time, it seemed Kamala was more than ready for the move. Ayna did not expect her wispy green magic projectile of sorts would actually follow her right behind Kamala. Serves her for pulling the same move twice in a row.

"I can't see your attack spell. Is that intentional or is my game lagging?"

She recomposed herself after taking the attack, wiping her mouth just in case she was bleeding. She wasn't, of course, but she just had to check. Despite failing after repeating a spell, she did the same next, choosing to use her lightning magic to thwart Kamala's reprisal, blasting her right on her knees. It would sting, sure, but it would not be as painful as most expect. Or at least she believed the same. If anything, the impact of her hitting the ground would be much worse albeit a quicker way to take her out.

Shield's up!

"Huh? Lagging?"

Kamala wasn't quite sure what @Ayna Nietzsche meant by that. She was no gamer, after all, so the terms were a little slow to come to her. When it did, she was even more confused. On her end, the game was working fine. Was she glitching? Should they stop?

"It's fine for me!"

Taking a breather would have been good for the both of them, but Ayna did not look like she was letting up. Especially after Kamala managed to hit her. She was probably pissed, her ego bruised. That or she was just really into the game. Kamala didn't want to get knocked out that easy to find out.

Fortunately for Kamala, Ayna's lightning blast was low enough for her nature magic to defend against. Thick roots from the undergrowth unexpectedly sprouted up with just enough height to eat her attack and protect Kamala's knees. Without even thinking about it, Kamala jumped back from the point of impact, and once more, implored Greenleaf the Bold to attack in her stead. It was fast becoming second nature now. Or maybe Kamala just wanted to survive the fight.

Oof, these low rolls, part 2

"I see."

The match was fairly even, though Ayna kept her eyes on @Kamala Graham just in case she decided to surprise her, which she did when she blocked her sweeping lightning blast to the knee with tree roots. It was the first time Ayna had seen anything like that, anything creative, though to be fair, this was her first fight inside the game. Ayna had played other games before, though, and that kind of magic, she hasn't seen from other PVPers. Maybe this one is a practiced PVPer. Maybe she's even a professional.

Using her own magic, she manage to thwart the attempted attack on her, though she could only see wisps of green energy get blown away by her charged breeze. She wasn't quite sure what kind of magic Kamala actually had, but she surmised it had something to do with nature. Green and roots... Not a hard puzzle to solve. But why can't she see anything past the vague wisps? Did it have anything to do with the other Beastfolk's magic? She squinted at Kamala, suspicions arising.

"Who are you talking to?"

As she waited for her answer, she decide to just end the fight right then and there. Calm and collected, Ayna charged Calamity's Light and tried to poke Kamala's side with it. A light tasing to render her unconscious, to put a stop to the match with her hands raised in victory. To Ayna, the finish might allow Kamala to answer her questions more correctly with nary a distraction. Should be easy then.

Oh, no!

"A friend! They're a nature spirit. I call them Sprouts but they're actually more like sapling sprites!"

Despite being in the thick of battle, Kamala still responded to @Ayna Nietzsche's
query with as much sunshine and love as she possibly could. Anything less would have been rude for her, in her own honest to goodness opinion. Kamala often tends to prioritize others before herself, which those same others tend to view as a weakness. To her, however, it was strength. After all, wouldn't it be much easier to succumb to hatred and anger when faced with your imminent fall?

Kamala let out a yelp when Ayna shocked her system. She tried to put up a shield to defend herself, one made with nature magic in the form of leaves and twigs, but she wasn't fast enough, or coordinated enough, to use it against Ayna's attack. Instead, she found herself weakening in the knees, having fallen prey to her adversary's lightning magic. Gah! That smarts!

❰ Greenleaf the Bold ❱

Taking a step back, Kamala once more called on Greenleaf the Bold to help her level the playing field, though it was clear that she was down for the count. All Kamala could do now was to bring Ayna to her level, drag the other Beastfolk with her to the loser's side, but even that seemed nigh impossible. Nature Magic wasn't meant to be used offensively. It was meant to heal and help and save, not fight and bruise and hurt. I guess this is it for me.

Oof, these low rolls, part 3

I spoke too soon. @Kamala Graham wasn't just going to lie down for Ayna. That much was obvious. It didn't help that the girl with the spear could not see the druid's attacks, except maybe for wisps of green energy, which made it hard to defend against. Case in point: Ayna tried to blip into a lightning flash only to eat Kamala's attack right when she reappeared behind her. Was her attack intercepting her? Or was it just a surrounding burst that Ayna could not anticipate without any more visible cues? It doesn't matter.

"Great move."

Bracing herself after taking the magical assault, Ayna heaved a sigh, exhaling deeply. Her next attack should end this skirmish. Either Kamala falls or she does. Either way, their fight would be over, and Ayna could assess her own flaws and mistakes. Maybe she just needs to be faster. Maybe she just needs to see the things that she cannot. She readied Calamity's Light, rushed to her opponent, and swiftly pivoted as she neared her, aiming to poke her on her side for a finisher.

Even worse rolls. Sigh.

Kamala made a little grunt as she managed to successfully defend against @Ayna Nietzsche and her shocking pokes, creating a temporary shield of roots from out of nowhere. Well, not precisely from out of nowhere. The sapling sprites have been all over them, and though Ayna could not see the Sprouts, they had been helping Kamala survive. It was from them that her shield of roots actually came to be. Maybe, just maybe, Ayna's inability to see them would be to her advantage.

"You're awesome, too!"

Despite the look of fiery determination on her face, Kamala was still at awe at Ayna's skills, her prowess. She didn't view her as an enemy that must be put down contrary to that look on her face, oh, no. Kamala instead viewed her as a role model, someone to be like, to aspire to be. But Kamala wasn't going to lose. Not while she still had a fighting chance.

Although surprised that she was still in the game, Kamala didn't waste any more time. She took a single step back and called forth Greenleaf the Bold who himself wasted no time and lunged immediately at Ayna. They were one and the same. She was one with the Sprouts. They will not falter.

Oof, these low rolls, part 4

But they did falter. There was much to be said for @Kamala Graham's grit and determination, but Ayna wasn't falling to such a basic attack. She's suffered the same thing throughout their little spar. She should know better by now than to let herself get caught easily. Disappearing into a lightning flash, she dodged the semi-invisible move and reappeared elsewhere.

"Sorry to burst your bubble, and I guess also your invisible friend's bubble, but I'm not that easy to beat."

Once more, she pointed the tip of Calamity's Light towards her prey, her farthest leg slowly moving back as the rest of her body took the lunging position. With a more primal yell, channeling the Beastfolk inside her, Ayna launched herself into Kamala, trying her best to deal the finishing blow. It wouldn't be that critical or reckless of a hit, but it should do the job of ending this fight. Unless she has more tricks up her druidic sleeves that is.

Better rolls this time!

Kamala did have more tricks up her druidic sleeves! As soon as @Ayna Nietzsche charged at her again, ethereal green light right behind Kamala materialized into a pair of vine-like whips that quickly latched on towards a nearby tree and pulled their magic-user out of harm's way. Oof! Kamala had not expected that kind of defensive tactics from her own magic but perhaps her subconscious was more adept at keeping her alive than she thought. Great job, magic!

Quickly thinking that her adversary wouldn't be slow to react to the momentary step back, Kamala then used the same magical vines to whip at Ayna. It wasn't a classy skill, or anything resembling a subtle spell, a fine art of magic, but it should do. The name of the game was survival, and Kamala was at least good at that. If anything, she had more will to live, and more importantly, win. That was debatable, of course, but that was how she felt at the moment.

"I'm so sorry, Ayna, but I'm winning this!"
