Common Cold:
Suffering from viral illness.

A cold. A damn cold was keeping him from logging out.

Ash frowned as he stared at his status screen. It was one of those colds on the worse end of the spectrum, the sort that could have been mistaken for a flu if it weren't for the status effect saying otherwise. Not that it mattered in the end. It still meant he was stuck in game, wrapped in a blanket as he sat too close to the furnace in his rented room.

He glanced at his friends list. There were a few people online, and he was divided between taking the opportunity to bitch and suffering in silence. In the end, he ended on the side of "informing" people about his situation. It'd make him feel a little better, at least.

Fun fact: turns out you can catch a cold in this game, and it counts as a damaging DoT. Guess who's spending the night sick in game!
Stay safe out there.

Achoo!

Well, at least he had tea, and someone in Astorea had invented disposable tissues. God forbid he deal with this using cloth handkerchiefs.

She had just finished scheduling the arrival of some last minute ingredients for the little culinary workshop the blonde had gotten herself involved with, a spur of the moment idea—subsequently pitched to Zeus and Childress—having grown into something unexpectedly exciting. "Alright with that almost everything is ready, just need to wait for that coconut shipment to arrive—" A sudden ding! interrupted her outloud train of thought, eyes shifting to the corner of her screen where an alert now blinked. Quick taps soon opened up the messaging system, surprised to see the name of the sender, before a frown quickly overtook her features as she read on.

"Wait, you can get a cold in-game—" Something the elf had never even thought about, and yet not the most surprising thing in the message. "—hold up, they have DoT mechanics?!"

What kind of sick-o coded that into a game, especially one like TerraSphere?! "Hmm... I know he was renting a room here in Finweald, but which inn? Maybe Rael knows…?" It was a shot in the dark, but probably better than barging into every inn around the city and asking if they’d seen a sick looking awoo around the place.

Mail

Hey Rael~

Guessing you’ve read Vargold’s message by now, I was thinking of dropping by and checking in on him… but I can’t remember what inn he said his room was at.

Any chance you remember which one it was…?

Already the pinkett had proven to be the most detail oriented of their small group, so the blonde hoped that she’d perhaps wrote down the location or something. A quick detour was made as Lúthien added a new stop on her way, figuring she might as well get something for the sick Vargold to stomach if he hadn’t eaten already.

When it came to in-game routines, Rael had a schedule that she rarely deviated from unless she was participating in the more intensive activities that Terrasphere had to offer. Conversing with Landers or other players to hear what they knew consisted most of it, with questing as a distant third option to deal with in their absence.

"Thank you for coming by!" Rael shook another's hand, waving them off after a lengthy conversation just as the notification pop-up appeared in the corner of her vision, its characteristic sound drawing attention to it.

Mail

To: Team Time EX

Do you have enough liquids? Blankets? Some Landers have tried to sell garments that "should" protect from the cold, but trust me, they do not... At all. You haven't worn those, have you?

Ah, have you eaten anything yet?

A tender smile found its way onto her face, devoid of concern as it struck her not as a cause for concern, but rather as an amusing discovery of the many ways Terrasphere found to mess with its reality-mimicking effects.

Just then, Luth's message also appeared.

Mail

Oh, hmm...

I vaguely recall that he once mentioned this one establishment that didn't serve "half-bad" food. We could meet up there and go asking around? We shouldn't have much trouble finding the place before long.

Making good on her word, she packed everything from the interview into her inventory and left for the tavern in search of the green-haired beastfolk. Once there, the storyteller attached, as she usually did, her coordinates to the messages for both the group mail and her personal exchange with Luthien, as if asking anyone to confirm her guess.

Oh, I didn't realize we still had this group.

I got an inn room with a furnace and extra blankets. And regular warm clothing, not what they like to peddle here in Finweald. Plenty of tea, too. It's only a few hitpoints a tick and it mostly regenerates so long as I don't push myself.

In the end, it's just normal cold, thankfully. Shouldn't be hard to rough out.

The response had come pretty quickly. If he couldn't go out and do things, then at least knowing there were people worried about his health was nice. From a randomly assigned group to some actual friends in this game. Definitely better friends than the... "companion" lurking just under his sweater. Sure, it meant that his heart wasn't rattling anymore, but he almost preferred that to this current alternative. Ugh, everything always seemed to come back to that mess.

Ash closed the UI and sighed, burrowing deeper into his blanket nest. Hopefully it would only be one night. His body in real life was probably fine, but he didn't want to imagine what he'd have to do if this lasted longer than that.

Bless Rael and her organized ways, the elf even attaching necessary coordinates to her messages as she responded to them. The revival of the chat, dormant since the events of its inception had technically been completed, brought a bitter smile to the blonde’s lips. There were still no news of Meri, no matter how much the ranger had moved and asked around about the little faerin she’d been met with silence and zero answers to her questions… but now wasn’t the time to think about that, not when a friend was sick and in need.

Mail

To: Team Time EX

Oh you’re right, this thing is still around. Man, this group chat sure brings back memories… what a wild autumn camp, huh?

Anyways plenty of tea is certainly not food, though it’s good you’re staying hydrated. I got some congee at a nearby restaurant, they make it very similar to the one my nonna did for me so I think you’ll like it.

Hey Rael, you’re already close to the place right? Mind checking what they have on the menu this evening?

After all, if the plan was to stick around with Vargold until he felt better—whether that was a couple of hours or all night—then sooner or later they would also need nourishment for their in-game avatars too. "Geesh, what were the game devs even thinking?" A mental note was made to let the hunter and her other friends know later about this new discovery, before they found out through an inconvenience.

Soon enough her steps brought her to particular inn, crimson gaze sweeping over the lobby to see if a familiar pinkett was already there…

Her finger hovered over the input keys as both of her former teammates called out the usage of the group chat, her efficiency-focused mind unaware of the heavier emotional implications behind it. Yet, though none could witness it, the color quickly took to her cheeks, a pink shade spreading over the bridge of her nose and the tips of her pointed ears as she was compelled to expose the reason behind it.

I-It's the only group I have...

It would seem that the lack of mentioned meals didn't go unnoticed by either of the elves, already the task of relaying what was on the tavern's menu falling onto her lap. Not that she minded. Rather than go through the pains of typing a lengthy response once again, Rael walked up to the innkeeper and held down her voicemail button, recording the variety of dishes they had at their disposal.

And as the group would soon find out, because of the arrival of the so-called Wintersday festivities, most of the menu had been redesigned around the theme of the holidays, discounted prices for larger orders meant to entice customers wishing to share with groups, and the like.

Mail

Oh, how is your sense of taste faring, Ash? Do you think you could handle something sweet, or would you prefer something warm and cozy?

Do you have any dietary restrictions?

What about you, Lu-...

The elf's message got cut off rather abruptly as her eyes fell onto the blonde, waving her over. "I'm here!"

Well, to be honest, it was the only chat group he had too. He'd never been particularly social until after Titanius-

...wait. What was all of this about getting him food? Ash blinked at the message a few times until the implications got through his clouded thoughts. Still coughing, he hammered in a message.

Mail

why are you guys getting food
ill be fine i promise

It wasn't until after he sent it that he realized that sending a message without any formatting was probably sending the opposite message. He shook his head, then took a little extra care with the next message.

Mail

If you've already got it I won't say no. I guess you can just drop it outside and knock. Don't want you to catch whatever this is.

There. That was probably less alarming, and more reasonable. Still, there was something... nice about knowing that people cared enough to get him food. It'd been a while since he'd had that experience in real life.

...wait. How did they know where he was staying...?

"I'm here!"

The familiar voice caught her attention first, crimson eyes shifting in its direction to finally spot the pink-haired elf waving at the ranger. "Hey Rael, it’s been a while~" A wide grin was given to the story teller as Lúthien approached her, waving back before she noticed the slight huff from the innkeeper as they pointedly stared at the pair.

"I’ll trust your judgment for today’s meal," A pat was given to the pinkett’s shoulder as Lúthien spoke, having just heard the contents of the voicemail that Rael had prematurely sent, before her attention turned to the new flashing alerts from their group chat. ’I’ll be fine’ he says while typing like that... She barely managed to contain a chuckle when Vargold’s next message arrived, the man back to using proper punctuation in his messages, almost as if he’d read the ranger’s mind.

Mail

To: Team Time EX

Yeah sure, we’ll send it up with the innkeeper. Be sure to open up quickly when they knock though, it seems they’re pretty busy today...

A wink was given in Rael’s direction as the blonde sent the message into the group chat, allowing their minds to connect before a quiet message was slipped through. { Play along, otherwise I bet he'll never open the door 'cause we 'might get sick' too. }

Her attention turned to the innkeeper once the story teller had finished making their food order, a sweet smile on her lips that also translated into Lúthien's voice as she spoke. "We’re supposed to meet a sick friend of ours, but he forgot to give us the room number he’s staying at. Could you be so kind as to give us that info instead? He’s a green haired awoo—beastfolk, about this tall or so?" A hand rose up high to show the estimated height of Vargold, while the other quietly slid a couple of golden coins in the innkeeper’s direction for their troubles.

Allowing Rael to order the food for the three of them was a mistake.

Why?

Because in the span of time that Luthien had taken to turn around, her attention diverted with replying to their friend in common, the pink-haired elf had made her way over to the counter where the innkeeper impatiently awaited for the two to become customers and not just loud pests in his hall.

She asked about the specials, and ordered every single one of them with a deadpan expression set upon her face.

She asked about desserts, and ordered every single one of them.

She asked about drinks, and ordered every single one of the non-alcoholic kind.

The more she ordered, the more intimidated the man grew, especially as the elf didn't seem to understand how much lighter her purse would grow as a result.

Luthien's arrival was a gentle reprieve from the tension, a small bead of sweat rolling down his temple as he begrudgingly took out a piece of paper and wrote down a number on it. Not a lot of green haired awoos, after all. "H-Here... Just make sure not to bother any paying customers on your way."

"Thank you,"
Rael responded, her voice muffled behind the mountain of containers of food which now kept her obscured from sight. At Luthien's behest, however, she sent yet another email to confirm their story.

Mail

To: Team Time EX

The innkeeper says he cannot disclose personal information about clients without their express authorization, so he'll be bringing up the food in but a minute.

A pudding tumbled from its place at the top of the pile and fell to the floor as payment for that email.

Okay. Thanks again.

Was that a thing the innkeeper did here? That was... weirdly modern. Then again, he'd never gotten food delivered directly to his inn room. He'd never needed to.

Still, there was something... a little strange about this. Something prickled at the back of his mind about this situation, but it was hard to sort out his gut feelings when said gut was busy trying to digest itself. Ash stood up, wobbling slightly as the sudden motion made him dizzy. It took some self-control to not automatically balance himself on the steaming furnace, and instead he wobbled his way to the door. He took a moment to unlock it and leaned against the wall next to it, waiting for the knock on the door.

He closed his eyes, already dozing off slightly - and if that meant he didn't catch on to the sound of footsteps approaching the door, or even the rattling of the doorknob... well, he no one could blame him for that. Being sick was awful like that.

Certainly made Luthien and Rael's schemes easier to enact, though...

She’d been so absorbed into making sure Vargold didn’t catch up to what the girls were planning that the blonde had actually missed the exchange of words between Rael and the innkeeper as the fellow dream elf proceeded to order every single one of the food and drinks (minus any alcoholic ones) available in the menu. The number he’d provided them had been taken and stored away once Lúthien had memorized it, before finally noticing the rather pale look on the NPC’s face as he stared at them.

"Hey, are you alright…?" While before the ranger wouldn’t have thought much about it now she couldn’t help but worry slightly, could it be possible that whatever bug Vargold had caught came from one of the Landers? Actually, could NPCs even get sick in the first place when they were just a bunch of ones and zeroes?

And then the plates began to arrive from the kitchen, one after another without pause, just as the blonde had been fetching her own purse to split the costs with the pinkette. At first she’d only raised an eyebrow in silent questioning, though that had soon given way to widened eyes as more dishes continued to arrive and be piled onto Rael’s waiting arms. By the end of it the elf couldn’t help but blink perplexedly at the mountain of food, drinks and desserts that her friend had become, snapped out of her stupor when a small pudding was dislodged from its spot and crashed onto the ground as Rael sent a message.

"H-Hold on Rael, I’ll grab some of those."

She made sure to keep her eyes clear after distributing some of the weight the pinkett was carrying onto her own arms, and although it’d been a few years since Lúthien’s waitressing days in the real world she was surprised to discover her lessons and muscle memory had been transferred into this body too. "Careful with that last step, Rael—it’s steeper than the others." She made sure to give her friend proper warnings and guidance and they searched for Vargold’s room.

One hand had been kept free of items with the express purpose of being acle to knock, but upon reaching the door Luthien had instinctively reached out towards the knob instead and twisted. To her surprise it had actually given way as the door opened and, before their green awoo Papa could stop them, the blonde had quickly snuck into the room before holding the door open for the pink-haired elf behind her.

"Housekeeping~!"

"Housekeeping~!" Rael echoed Luthien's announcement of their entry down to the singsong intonation of it, though lacking the blonde's natural enthusiasm as the storyteller gave a more muted, monotone version of it. The stark contrast between their disposition would've been enough to spark a chuckle from certain crowds, as she secretly hoped this to be the case for Ash, but she could no longer await a reaction as she felt her arms grow weaker under the weight of all the food she had ordered for the patient.

She stepped in after the other elf, and peeked over the pile she still held onto, scanning the room for the presence of a familiar beastfolk and coming completely empty-handed in her hasty investigation. Immediately did she turn toward her accomplice, a quick psst! thrown her direction so as to not call the attention of any who might be currently wandering down the halls of the inn, ready to catch them red-handed.

"I think we got the wrong room... Check the paper again, it's in..." Rael looked down at the lengthy skirt of her dress, having suddenly forgotten just where she had left the innkeeper's note. "One of my pockets. Someone must've forgotten to lock their room. In any case, let's leave before we get ourselves in trouble."

"And no, you can't nap to try and find out whose room this is."

A warning born not out of thin air, but out of past experience with the way the ranger solved most of the mysteries ever presented to her.

Rael turned on her heels, and was immediately welcomed by a flash of green hair leaning against the wall next to the door frame, their visage obstructed by the food she carried. Their sudden appearance, whoever they were, was enough to cause her to step backward out of sheer instinct, gasping loudly as all the items in her pile threatened to fall from the sequence.

"Oh no..."

Any combat instincts Ash had were suppressed by the illness clouding his thoughts, and so the sudden opening the door was met with a bleary stare rather than any jump to action. Then Rael's pile of food began to wobble, and he stepped forward in an attempt to stabilize the tower of food with one hand, while pulling his blanket over his nose and mouth with the other.

"What are-" Ash coughed into the blanket, clearing the phlegmy hoarseness from his voice. "...what are you two doing here?"

His nose was congested, which thankfully saved him from what would probably be a stomach-awakening amount of smells. He glanced between Luthien, Rael, and the door. "You guys should just drop off the stuff and go. I don't want either of you catching this."

The warmth of the furnace was flowing out of the room, letting fresh cold seep in through his blanket barrier. Even his metabolism wasn't enough to keep him from shuddering and his hair from standing on end.

She’d missed his presence entirely at first, the sickness that currently claimed their favorite awoo dad friend somehow having turned him into a wallflower as the girls entered the room. Crimson eyes scanned the space for the familiar green-haired man, the initial cheeky grin on her face soon giving place to a look of confusion just as Rael questioned if they had the right room number.

"Y-Yeah, I’m sure this is the right number… even double checked before heading up the stairs—"
”In any case, let's leave before we get ourselves in trouble. And no, you can't nap to try and find out whose room this is."
"H-Hey, that was only one time—okay, maybe twice—but we didn’t have a lot of options!"

Lúthien turned to face her fellow elven friend as she tried to defend her unorthodox approach to solving some mysteries, before the gasp that left the pinkette’s lips caused the blonde to tense in response. It was a sound that she had once been very familiar with in the real world while waiting tables, usually whenever she had carried more than she should’ve on those earlier days of work.

"Fuck, Rael—!" She was carrying a load of her own too, and as carefully balanced as it’d been placed into her arms Lúthien knew she wouldn’t be able to catch Rael’s own plates—not without a good portion, if not most of it, ending on the floor of this room as a result. It was then a flash of green caught her attention as Vargold stepped forwards, offering Rael help in balancing the absurdly tall tower of plates that Rael currently carried while also doing his best to cover his mouth as a cough escaped.

"See, I knew we had the right room, Rael!"
"What are—...what are you two doing here?"
"Watcha mean? Told ya we were on the way in the group chat, Ash."

Her gaze looked away from the beastman as she spoke, aware that her words weren’t entirely accurate but also technically not a lie as she walked deeper into the room. She spotted a small table inside, thankful for its existence, that allowed her to place her own load of plates and bowls and whatever else Rael had ordered front he kitchen down, before giving Ash the most innocent smile possible for a gremlin as she walked over to try and relieve Rael from some of the other plates she was still holding onto.

"Besides, food always tastes better with friends~"

Steady hands caught the pile before the situation could worsen beyond her awkward predicament, shoulders dropping as a sigh of relief tumbled from the elf's lips.

His first question gave her reason to pause, briefly considering each and every single one of the group's meetings under... Less joyful or casual circumstances. It was no wonder he would be surprised by the two of them turning up at his doorstep. Bless his heart for not immediately pulling a weapon on them.

"We wished to pay you a visit given your unfortunate circumstances. We thought you would be wanting for company, if at least to pass the time in something other than unbearable silence," Rael stated simply, without the added weight of her gaze upon his form as Luthien had already taken care of that part. She kept her arms extended towards the other elf, allowing for the plates to be taken off her grasp, and then arranged for the upcoming meal.

It wasn't a difficult task to notice the quivering of Ash's body beneath the protective barrier which he had so carefully wrapped around himself, head tilting from his direction and to the door that yet remained open from their intrusion. A flicker of warmth would bloom on her face then as she looked to him for the first time since their arrival, the lilt of her voice pointed less to mischief as Luthien's did, but to kindness.

"Do allow us to stay for a minute, or two."

Ash continued to stare, trying to find the energy to protest or argue. But the stifling warmth of the inn room was escaping, and the lukewarm air of the hallway sent chills through him. "...fine, but close the door behind you."

Now that the food was stable, he wobbled his way back to the fireplace and sat back down, pulling the blanket tighter around his shoulders. At this point, he'd done everything short of violence to warn them off, and he neither had the will nor the energy to escalate to that level.

Why had he even sent that message in the first place? He wasn't the sort to seek comfort when he was sick...

...well, going by the uncomfortable sensation of something shifting under his shirt, he had an idea or two.

"And maybe put on a face mask or something. This status isn't convenient enough to tell me how long I'm going to be sick." He buried his face into the blanket to cover another cough. "Seriously, logout locked by a fucking cold..."

"...fine, but close the door behind you."

A smile tugged at the corners of her lips in quiet joyfulness upon hearing the caenis cave in and accept the present company, continuing to help unload Rael’s arms of the many plates the elf had ordered for them today. The amount was such that even Lúthien found it challenging to arrange them all on the table provided in the room, but once the last plate was taken from the pinkette she nodded towards the door.

"Can you get that, Rael?"

The initial thought that crossed her mind when Vargold made his request had been to use her Aeromancy to complete the task, before a look at the shivering and bundled up man by the fireplace caused Lúthien to think of a better alternative. Crimson eyes moved through the varied options of food items that the Storyteller had ordered for them, eyebrows raised as she finally had a moment to take in the vast quantity of food and combinations were present, before Vargold’s warning caused the elf to check something in her inventory.

"They’re not exactly face masks," A pair of cotton scarves materialized in the air before she offered one to Rael. "But they kept sand outta my mouth in Redchron… man, I still can’t believe the devs actually coded the common cold into a game."

Her own scarf was loosely wrapped around her heck for the time being, no use covering her mouth this very moment if they were gonna eat anyways, before finally sighing in defeat as she turned towards the pinkette. "Alright, since you ordered all of this, where should we start?"

When the last of the trays and plates had been taken off her charge, she dutifully circled around the blanket-clad beastfolk to close the door behind herself. A muted thank you passed through her lips as her fellow elf offered her a scarf by which to keep herself from getting afflicted with the same sickness that kept Ash locked inside the game.

"Ash never stated any dietary restrictions or allergies so I brought everything in case he didn't find something to his liking." Why she felt the need to explain herself and her bad financial choices as she settled down near the blonde, she couldn't tell. Instead, it was the blossoming pink hue that colored her cheeks and the tips of her ears that spoke volumes.

"An appetizer, I suppose." Rael's hand briefly glided over all the packaged food in search of a specific piece, coming out with a piece that she held with little regard, its interiors not fragile or in danger of spilling.

"Now, I was told to spread something over it, like caramel or butter, or even a sauce if we had any available... Which we do. Supposedly, the taste is awful but it contains all the nutrients that you need to fight off a sickness, which is most important right now."

After carefully unwrapping the package and making her way over to their sick friend, she let it down a respectable distance away from him: a rather intimidating-looking loaf of plain bread, its size larger than what one would normally expect.

"You really did buy one of everything, huh." It was hard to tell if Ash's pale face was because of his sickness or his shock at the impromptu banquet the two had brought. "I appreciate it and all, but I'm kind of stuffed up. It's all gonna taste like mush right now."

He eyed the dense loaf that Rael unwrapped. He (well, she) had baked a few loaves before. Enough to wonder about how large it was, or why the crumb was so dense. But Ash was usually the sort to scarf down food in this game for the sake of maintaining meters rather than flavor, and it wasn't like he'd be able to taste it anyway.

He reached out to grab it and pulled a knife from his inventory. His concern about the bread didn't decrease as he cut an abnormally heavy slice, but he pushed his concerns aside and took a large bite.

"...mmph."

He couldn't taste much, but it was dense and mealy and almost painfully dry. He managed to force it down, then reached for his water in an attempt to clean out the texture. "...wow. That was definitely made to be 'healthy'..."

It was impossible to miss the rosy hues that colored Rael’s cheeks and the tip of her ears as the elf explained her reasoning behind the unexpected banquet, and a soft smile unconsciously pulled Lúthien’s lips as she listened. That’s pretty thoughtful of her. At least this way she’d made sure that something here would be to Ash’s liking without risking the caenis’ life further, and it also meant they wouldn’t have to rush to get another option or worse—find out that the kitchen had already closed for the night.

"An appetizer, I suppose."
"Good idea, had one in mind?"

She watched Rael pick up a rather large and bundled up item, one eyebrow raised in curiosity as she wondered what was inside while listening to the Storyteller's explanation. Apparently something extremely nutritious, but due to those properties its flavor was allegedly awful… that itself wasn’t too surprising considering how healthy Rael described it to be, though there were options available to mask the flavor too. Crimson eyes remained glued to the item as Rael unwrapped it, dying to see just what exactly the kitchen had produced, before a moment of silence passed through them as the loaf was finally revealed.

"Pffft...!"

A hand rose to cover her mouth as the blonde turned herself to the side for a moment, just for a moment so she could compose herself, before she finally turned back to look at Ash and the largest loaf of bread that Lúthien had ever seen. "There’s probably some sugar and cinnamon in one of these… we could mix them with the butter and make a sweet spread for it?" The insides of the loaf were finally revealed once Vargold had cut out a heavy slice for himself, the rather dense texture of it almost palpable without even actually touching the bread.

"...wow. That was definitely made to be 'healthy'..."
"I wonder if it’s made with, like, all of the grain options available in this game...?"

Lúthien could only watch as the caenis did his best to get through the first bite, finally managing to force it down before reaching for his cup of water. Her hand reached for the pitcher on the table before she stood, moving closer to Ash so she could fill up his cup before settling back onto her seat.
