Personality
Avery seems to get along with anyone, willing to compromise to make sure everybody's having a good time. Despite this, he prefers more sentimental company, perhaps because he ends up having a lot less of it as a result of his general outgoingness. This is why he made sure to hold onto his best friend ever since the two were young, and a lot of the way Avery acts is usually in that person's interest.
He can be a bit of a normie sometimes, and his flaws come mostly from a lack of understanding, where at times he tends to generalize people a bit too much. For most of his life, he was convinced that he knew exactly what sort of person he was, but ever since a few years ago he began to question if he ever was the person he thought he was.
In-game, Verya is symbolic of Avery's dedication to his depressed friend Samson mixed with a bit of her own dreams that were sacrificed in the name of keeping her family happy. With the cloak of anonymity combined with the company of her most trusted friend, Verya most often exemplifies the exact same personality traits as Avery but tuned to an extreme. Her free-spiritedness may cause her to act callous towards others' requests. Her tendency to generalize things she doesn't understand that well may creep into the territory of being discriminatory. But also, her lack of self-importance might manifest as golden generosity.

Background
Avery was always the sort of guy to fit in easily and socialize easily. Despite having a large selection of friends to stick to though, he always chose his childhood friend Samson over the masses. Outwardly a very casual and agreeable guy, Avery preferred the sentimental company of someone close and trusted. Someone to fall asleep playing Halo with while sitting back to back on the weekends, someone he could talk to about anything.
Unlike his artistic best friend, Avery always wanted to see the world and go traveling, so he decided very early on that his dream job was to be a tour guide and pilot. Sometimes dreams are just dreams though, and when it came to light that he was colorblind, both his university and family pressured him to take a different career path with the credits he had earned in his first two years rather than risk failing the tests he would have to pass in order to achieve his dream.
The next two years after that were spent with doubts and depression spells that he had no choice but to find a way to bury. His family only wanted him to be successful–not happy–and his drive to complete university had plummeted. Worst of all though was that his best friend didn't really ever message him, and when the two did text it was brief. All these years, was Samson annoyed by him? Surely not…
As school became more difficult, Avery eventually found something that allowed him to escape his stresses, and by the time he had graduated, he was regularly indulging in illegal drugs. It was fine for him, after all he did graduate without any issues, but his return to his home town with a degree was muddied by his distress and withdrawals. He didn't have dealers or sources anymore, and everything he sought to repress came back all at once. That was why he took a shot in the dark and messaged his old best friend, to whom he eventually confessed about his addiction and his lack of motivation. Thus Samson dragged him into a totally different kind of illegal drug to replace the others: Terrasphere.
