Vina nodded and patted Luna on the shoulder, the vixen giving her friend a wide smile.

Climbing it is then~ But I might be able to make it at least a little bit easier for us~

The druidess's plan didn't exactly allow them to skip the climbing either, but...

Stepping forward she began to hum another song, her attention this time aimed at the rootway above them. At first nothing happened, but slowly new branches began to sprout from the humongous root, interweaving as they slowly extended down towards the two Starcalled. Being the offshoots of a giant root there were no leafs or twigs to be found, the new appendages more like wooden tendrils which loosely formed a braid until they reached all the way to the path Luna and Vina were on.

Once her work was finished Vina stopped humming and inspected her work, voicing her approval with a satisfied hum before turning back towards Luna.

That build of yours also makes you very strong and tough, so maybe I could bother you to carry me up as well Luna~?

She gave the tigress a teasing wink, half-expecting Luna to turn down the offer. Between the two of them Luna was definitely better-suited for climbing, and the braid of roots would offer an overabundance of handholds for any aspiring climber.

Luna blinked, but watched through her washed out point of view as Vina began to hum, allowing branches to sprout from the root in front of them and extending down, wrapping around each other until they formed a braid that reached the two women. Luna blinked again, taking in the sight, before sighing and rolling her eyes. It was too late to be frustrated at how lacking her abilities were outside of tanking in a direct fight. The only thing she could really do was move forward with it.

Well that's impressive. Just don't waste too much energy.

She hummed, though when Vina asked if she could carry her, Luna hummed in thought. It wasn't impossible, Vina didn't look particularly heavy, though it wasn't as if the woman had hollow bones either so she wasn't going to be light. Still, this body was strong enough to carry a person, or even two people, plus any equipment they wore pretty easily. Carrying only really presented one problem, here.

As long as you don't need me to hold onto you. I need both hands to climb. Or maybe I don't but I'd prefer two instead of one.

She clambered onto the braid of roots, before gesturing for Vina to grab onto her. If the Vixen could attach herself without obstructing Luna's hands, that would be ideal.

Vina laughed softly, her tail swishing behind her as she took the praise without missing a beat. She did like it when people showing their approval of her work, even if she didn't angle for compliments.

Don't worry Luna~ The Tangleweaves are filled with energy, so shaping new plants here is quite easy!

The ecosystem of the Tangleweaves was quite interesting, with the Allfather Tree that formed the basis of the entire jungle serving as a font of life for the rest of the jungle to thrive on. Granted, forming something as simple as a root braid wasn't exactly the most taxing ordeal in the first place... but it was good to know that druids were at their most potent in this place.

With a slight tilt of her head Vina awaited Luna's response, a mischievous light in her eyes as the tigress was clearly considering the suggestion. Truth be told Vina could probably climb that braid quite easily if need be, but an opportunity to let Luna show off her physical might was one Vina would take if possible. Fortunately for her then that her friend eventually accepted the idea, as long as Vina could find a way to hold on without getting in the way.

Sure thing Luna~! Just give me a moment and we'll be good to go.

Stepping forward Vina would quickly climb onto Luna's back, once again showing herself to be surprisingly light: for somebody as strong as Luna it would probably make little difference, and while the mushrooms had messed with her perception they hadn't diminished her physical abilities in the least. With her arms wrapped around Luna's neck and her feet hooked together around the tigress's waist the vixen rested her chin on her friend's shoulder.

Just think of me as a knapsack and we'll be up there in no time~

Was this place that full of energy? Luna couldn't really feel that kind of thing, though she wasn't a druid, so maybe it was just related to that? It made her feel like nature magic was really important and useful, especially in a world that wasn't overrun with cities and giant skyscrapers and the like. Granted, it was a little late for that. Even before the server outage, she hadn't really put any effort or focus into learning the nature magic she'd once taken up.

Granted, for now it was time to focus on climbing. Vina clambered onto her back, light enough that it didn't weigh her down too much. The vixen managed to wrap her arms around Luna's neck and hook her feet together with her legs around Luna's waist. It was the best and most secure they were going to get without a rope to attach them to each other.

Okay, just hang on then.

With a grunt, she lurched upwards, starting the slow but steady process of climbing upwards, hands gripping at bark, wood and moss, each time hoping that the ambient moisture or her own sweat wouldn't make her hands slip and cause the two of them to plummet, as they ascended.

Once she'd latched onto Luna there was little Vina could do but hang on while her friend did all of the heavy lifting. Even for someone as strong as Luna climbing could be dangerous, so if Vina suddenly created an upward gust it could end up doing more harm than good. Fortunately then that Vina herself was so light, allowing the brave tigress to focus on the task at hand, heaving the two of them higher and higher, back towards the rootway from which they'd originally descended.

The root braid Vina had created had been designed to be easy to climb, so even with Luna worrying about her sweat causing her to slip up she at least didn't have to worry about searching for good handholds: the roots were a lot sturdier than they looked, thin enough for Luna to latch onto with her hands but still holding her weight fairly easily, safe for some weak bending which was distributed across the braid.

Over the hill of flannel covered trees~
I wag my tail until the rooftops disappear~
Under the sound of stars that fish for dreams that never come~
But like the rain they start to heal~

I don't want to wait~
I don't want to miss you~
I don't want to wait~
I don't want to go~

Vina sang softly, her Harmonic Magic allowing her to motivate Luna beyond mere words as her melodious voice turned into strength and stamina for her friend.

Another stroke of luck was that, without Vina using her Aeromancy, there weren't any winds to worry about as they ascended back towards the path. There was the occasional whistling which would ruffle their hairs, but nothing strong enough to challenge Luna's strong grip, allowing her to complete her task without any further incident.

In a way the effects of the mushrooms might actually help in this specific scenario: being pulled into the gap between the living and the dead did make the world of the living feel more distant than usual, but that also made it easier to ignore the startling depths below them.

Regardless of whether Luna appreciated that fact or not, as long as she kept going eventually the two of them would reach the original rootway, and once they were back on solid ground Vina would give her friend a hug before letting go and sliding onto said ground, stretching her arms and legs after holding onto Luna all that time.

So! That went well, didn't it Luna~?

With Vina on board, Luna started the slow but steady process of heaving herself upwards, using raw grip strength and physical power to haul the two of them upwards. It was not going to be a fast process by any means and it wasn't the first time that Luna had found herself lamenting the lack of utility she had available to her in her capabilities, but for now relying on raw physicality would, at least, not be the worst possible thing she could do.

Especially not as Vina began to sing, the druidess' song filling her with energy and vitality. It wouldn't be a perfect solution, eventually energy would run out across the board for both of them, but it did allow for her to climb without needing to pause to recouperate. That access to constant progress did manage to, quite blessedly, eat away at a lot of the time the climb would have taken or not.

Combined with the numbing coldness and slight apathy that came packaged with carrying these strange spiritual mushrooms, it meant that Luna was, for the most part, able to dissociate and allow her body to simply ascend as it wanted to, until they eventually were back on the original rootway, before reaching the ground itself, where Vina could first disembark.

Mmm. That wasn't too bad. A little tedious, though.

She paused to take in a deep breath, frowning at how stale and dull the air tasted and felt. It was official, being trapped in this weird state between life and death sucked ass.

All that's left is to return, right? We can just scrape some bark from the big tree once we're back?

Vina laughed softly in response to Luna's statement, the druidess patting her friend on the shoulder with a friendly smile on her face.

It's a good thing we don't have to do more of that then, right? We just have to get back now~

As cheerful as Vina was, she could tell that the tigress was on edge: the effects of the mushrooms must be quite uncomfortable, so the druidess wouldn't waste any more of Luna's time than necessary. Turning around she invited her friend to follow as she led the way back the way they came from, her tail swishing behind her as she looked up at the skies.

It looks like we weren't down there that long: the sun's still up, see~?

Time had clearly passed while they were down in the bowels of the earth, the sunlight now passing through the canopy at an angle and casting longer shadows everywhere. However, the warmth of day was still present even if Luna's affliction made it difficult for her to feel it, the sounds of birds in the distance also sounding faint.

We might need a bit more than some bark, but basically yes~! Trelumne said we should gather as much green wood as we could carry, so it's a good thing we've got an inventory. (She pointed at a distant tree.) Two armfuls should do it: better to have too much than too little, I'd say~

As the two of them walked they'd eventually return to solid land, the rootways disappearing behind them as the terrain levelled out. All they had to do to leave the Weaves was keep walking south at this point, and the sun's angle made it easy for them to tell which way south was. The druidess hummed a cheerful tune as she walked ahead, her ears turning this way and that way to take in the sounds of their surroundings. The jungle was remarkably peaceful... or maybe the predators just knew better than to bother two Travelers? That big tiger from which they'd extracted some blood was the only real threat they'd come across, not counting the spectres underground.

Since we can put it in our inventory anyway, maybe it'd be better to gather the green wood now so we don't forget later? Trelumne will be annoyed if we forgot that part and had to go back~

After all, the elven shaman had made it clear any tree inside the Tangleweaves would do, and they were passing many of those. Reaching out with her staff Vina tapped the nearest wooden giant, the sound of wood softly hitting wood filling the air for a moment before getting drowned out by the chirping of birds.

It was unnerving beyond belief for the world to be so devoid of heat and vibrancy. She had no real desire to keep this feeling and it practically murdered any burgeoning interest that she may have been developing in such matters as spirit magic and shamanism, or anything of the sort. This one experience had basically proven that those kinds of things were certainly not her jam, even if she'd spent a lot of time around undeath.

That was neither here nor there, though. It wasn't something that she was particularly keen to dwell upon, for now.

Alright then. If we just need some of this wood, let's get gathering then. Might as well snag some whilst we walk back.

Whilst Vina might use her magic to retrieve it, Luna had to rely on far more mundane, and brutal, methods. Her hands gripped bark and ripped it from the trunks they moved past. They snagged branches that hung low enough to grasp and tore them from the boughs they hung from. With the ability to manipulate nature, Vina was undoubtedly far better suited to gathering this wood, but Luna still attempted to get as much as she could, stashing it away into her inventory.

With Luna quickly agreeing to the plan the two of them got to work gathering the final ingredient, the green wood that all trees of the Tangleweaves were made out of. With her impressive strength the tigress could quite easily tear the bark from the trees and break off branches which reached low enough for her to grab, making it an easy task for her to collect a sizeable amount of wood in a short amount of time.

Vina, on her end, was much slower: the druidess was taking her time healing the injuries left behind by Luna's efficient but relentless approach, leaving the trees with less bark and branch but at least hale and whole otherwise. She didn't say anything about Luna's methods, only smiling encouragingly as the strong tigress kept putting more green wood into her inventory. Unlike the mushrooms the green wood didn't really seem to have any effect on her... or perhaps the mushrooms' effects were too strong.

The two of them would keep walking as they collected the last reagent, Vina guiding the way back to the southern edge of the forest, past the ridge they'd traversed before encountering the large tiger. The beast was no longer anywhere to be seen, presumably having left to hunt food after the two of them had departed for the rootways. While the journey was largely uneventful the sun kept moving across the sky, itself hidden but its rays of light continuing to shine through the leafs at an increasing angle, the subtle change eventually indicating that they were approaching the end of the afternoon.

By the time that they reached the edge of the jungle and Oflainn was revealed in the distance the sky's blue hues were slowly turning orange, the sun's rays reflecting off the clouds as fresh air met them head on. Vina stepped forward with a wide smile, her floor-length silver-white hair dancing around her as it was picked up by the wind.

What a pleasant breeze...~ Think that Trelumne still has time today to perform the ritual if we hurry, Luna?

There was the possibility that the bejewelled elf would want to wait until tomorrow, but the possibility gave Vina enough motivation to motion for her friend to follow as she resumed walking, heading straight towards the large Druid Tree which was now alight with many illuminated windows, the Yladian inhabitants having largely retreated for the evening. As the wind continued to swirl around them the chill of night also began to set in, even if for Luna it currently made little difference: the in-between state didn't really care if it was windy or not.

The travel took time, more so with the slower pace they were moving at in order to retrieve all that they needed, even if it was something that they could grab from just about anywhere in their vicinity. Even just reaching up to snap a twig off of a branch slowed them down at least a little bit. More so did Vina actively spellcasting to heal the trees from the damage being done to them. Perhaps if she weren't currently feeling the effects of the mushrooms, Luna would have felt bad about it.

It was hard to, though. She wasn't a druid, had no real talent or inclination towards such things. Trees were made of wood and wood was a very useful resource. More so when it had some kind of mystical or magical property. Inevitably more than a few trees would be lost in the pursuit of such things.

Watching the sky dyeing itself a vibrant orange, Luna hummed as she was asked if there'd still be time. Whilst she didn't want to impose on somebody, she couldn't deny how much she wanted to get this procedure done.

If we hurry, she might. I think we probably have enough of the wood.

Her inventory was full of it, so that'd probably suffice. She set off at more of a pace, following after Vina. She was so close to fixing everything.

With a nod and a smile Vina set the pace back to the Druid Tree, a lively step which had her hair dancing around her almost as much as the wind. In the distance Lake Oratio glittered in the light of the setting sun, a thousand small stars flickering on the surface disturbed only by the same winds that greeted the two adventurers as they returned from their journey into the deep woods.

As they got closer the sounds of civilization would also be carried upon the winds: people gathering inside of the homes built into the Druid Tree, the inhabitants of Oflainn spending the late afternoon and evening together. The smell of food was also present, making Vina's nose twitch even if it didn't persuade her to stop moving.

Maybe she'll let us stay for dinner as well~ I'm starving!

While Vina did tend to act as if nothing she did really weighed her down, journeying through the Tangleweaves was still a draining affair. Not enough to be really troublesome, but now that she'd mentioned the idea of food her stomach responded by growling loudly, perhaps loudly enough that even Luna would pick up on it. The druidess laughed shamelessly, stroking her exposed belly with her free hand.

Hahaha, that sounds like a yes~! What about you Luna~?

Before long the two of them would find themselves at the bottom of the large tree which wouldn't have been out of place amongst the giants of the Weaves, barring the homes which had been grown into the trunk and the larger branches.

Let's see, it was... this way~!

The chipper songstress took Luna by the hand before beginning the ascent, leading her friend up the stairs and bridges into the heart of the treeborn village. After the journey through the Weaves this place felt a lot safer and calmer, even if the upwards climb still taxed their legs to the point that one might wonder how the villagers dealt with it, or if all of them had legs like olympic runners. Fortunately they didn't have to travel all the way to the top, even if they had to go far enough that even the playful vixen ended up slowing down a little, even if her tail was still swishing as fitfully as before.

Like the other houses Trelumne's house was now marked by windows emitting warm light, which at least answered the question of whether Trelumne was home and awake. Rather than immediately walking up to the door Vina took a moment to take a deep breath, closing her eyes and listening to the winds before turning to Luna.

Ready, Luna~?

She imagined that, no matter whether Trelumne would perform the ritual today or tomorrow, her friend could at least dump the mushrooms and no longer have to deal with that affliction which clearly had her on edge.

The more they rejoined the society that had gathered around this giant tree, the more Luna wondered if they would be able to feel the effect that the mushrooms were having on her. Just how spiritually aware and knowledgeable were the people here? Was this Trelumne what she should expect, or just an outlier when it came to these affairs? Surely in such a large gathering of people, only a few would have that kind of knowledge or capability? It would have been superfluous for so many of them to study in these kinds of things.

Though, the sound of Vina's stomach growling almost added some levity to things. Almost. That core of coldness felt like it was a wall between things that she wanted to feel and what she was capable of feeling.

Well, in theory I'd like to get this ritual thing over and done with immediately. Not entirely sure I'd really want to stay for dinner.

Though either way, taken by the hand by Vina, they did eventually reach the house that Trelumne inhabited, illuminated by some kind of glow from the inside, though whether it was the simple light of a candle or something else wasn't anything that Luna could know. She took a deep breath in, retrieving the mushrooms from her inventory and holding them in her arms. The effect didn't fade. It wouldn't until she was rid of them.

As ready as I'll ever be, I guess. You can do the talking.

With almost all the villagers having turned in for the evening they encountered very few people on the bridges and platforms. Those few Yladians still out and about acknowledged them with polite nods and smiles, but none of them seemed interested enough to engage them in conversation, no doubt drawn towards a filling meal and a warm bed for the night. Vina answered their non-verbal greetings with her own friendly smiles, her tail wagging behind her right until they reached the platform which served as Trelumne's porch.

Maybe the dinner could be celebration for Natiri's return~? (She nodded.) I'll go first then.

Patting Luna on the shoulder she gave her friend a supportive smile before knocking on the door, already opening the door as a voice within bid them to enter. Holding the door open she invited for Luna to follow before stepping further inside, the warmth of the hearth a welcome greeting after autumn's chill had wrapped itself around them.

Trelumne's living room looked almost exactly the same as it had when they'd left, save for some markings in the middle of the floor. The elf herself appeared to not have left her position, either: she clearly must've been doing something whilst the two of them were away, but she looked as if she might have been sitting there all day, just waiting for them. No matter the case, she tilted her head at Vina, then shifted her golden eyes towards Luna and the mushrooms in her arms.

You're always too eager Vina. (She clacked her tongue.) For you to return already you must've practically ran through the woods. Well, no matter: if you're that eager to get your condition fixed I'll applaud your assertiveness. That said... (She sighed.) I guess I didn't tell you about the side effects of the Shimmerspot Caps, did I? You best hand those over quickly.

Luna's been feeling off ever since she harvested them... Will that go away once she gives them to you?

The shaman nodded, pushing her chair back to motion towards the desk. There wasn't exactly a lot of space, the edges decorated with many small objects and parchments, but there was enough space for the tigress to dumb her taxing load.

Not immediately, but it'll fade for sure. (She eyed the mushrooms again.) You found a lot more than I expected you to, as well. But yes, since the Shimmerspot Cap weakens the barrier between worlds if you're holding that many of them your grasp on our world will begin to weaken. Without proper protection that is.

While she was frowning, her voice didn't sound accusing or scolding: if anything she sounded more concerned than anything, even if she also didn't look like she was about to fawn over Luna's well-being.

As you can see I made some preparations in case you decided to surprise me. It'll take some time to finish the setup, but we can perform the ritual tonight if you want.

The reminder should have made her smile. Maybe it was the effects of the mushrooms, but instead, Luna winced and frowned at the thought. The return of Natiri? If only things were that simple, but she was starting to really get the feeling that they weren't. Though, again, it was possible that was simply the influence of the Shimmerspots. There wasn't any way to know for sure, it wasn't as if she had a bright and sunny personality all the time, after all.

Maybe. Here's hoping, I guess. So long as nothing goes wrong and the ritual works that way.

Still, she followed after Vina. The girl knew these people, knew this place. And Luna had always really been a follower, especially in unfamiliar territory. It'd take some time, but all the same, it helped her to remain back and just let Vina take the lead.

Once inside, she dumped the mushrooms in her arms down onto the desk that had been gestured to by the shaman, almost sighing in relief when that strange muted effect faded from her and the indicator for an active status vanished from her HUD. At the very least, there didn't seem to be any lingering effects.

Well, aside from the fact that it now felt very warm, since she'd just started to get used to that sense of cloying coldness.

Yes, we discovered the side-effect. Anyway, can we get this ritual going as soon as possible? I'm really anxious to see the result.

Luna's eagerness to be done with this whole business was obvious to everyone, so Trelumne wasted no more time as she finally stood up, her movements slow and deliberate in an attempt to spare her own frail health.

Of course. That said, better to make sure it goes well than that it goes fast: messing with such magics that alter the body and the soul is not something that should be done in haste. (She paused.) But I will try to waste as little of your time as possible, don't you worry. In the meantime, perhaps you could prepare my dinner?

Vina raised an eyebrow at that, the druidess somewhat bemused at the suggestion even if she wasn't necessarily opposed. Stepping forward she moved to help Trelumne get up, but the elf waved her away, standing on her own feet.

I don't mind, but will it take that long to prepare Trelumne?

The elf nodded, pointing at the markings on the floor as she answered the vixen's curiosity.

I prepared what I could, but there are limits to what one can do without reagents, no? And given that I've yet to ask for any compensation... preparing the food while I work is a small thing, I would say. (She paused again.) I assume that the two of you know how to cook. If not, then forget I said anything.

Vina reflexively sniffed the air, but the scent of the many herbs and other materials in the room made it difficult to make out where the kitchen might be. She nodded at the elf, then looked towards Luna.

I know how to cook, yes. How about you Luna? Up for preparing a meal while she gets ready to bring Natiri back~?

Luna paused. The question of making the woman dinner was an innocent one. No disrespect was meant by it. Still, she had to take a deep breath, in and then out, through her nose, exhaling her frustration alongside the air she'd been holding. Of course, no amount of impatience could ever actually accelerate something like this, but it felt so frustrating to be so close, then to have such a menial task asked of her.

No disrespect had been meant by it, but damn it all if it hadn't felt a little condescending. Again, in through the nose and out of the mouth. Inhaling patience and exhaling her frustration, before it threatened to bubble up and over. And if there was a slight jump in her lower eyelids, she tried her best not to show it, plastering a neutral expression over her face instead and shaking her head.

I mean, I could try? I've got literally no experience in a kitchen though, so I'm pretty much as liable to set things on fire as I am to cook them.

She nearly always ordered food in the real world. It was just easier and more convenient. Either that or she only ate stuff that could be eaten cold. Store bought sandwiches, a pack of freeze dried strawberries. Those kinds of things.

I don't really know what I can do to help out, to be honest. I'm not exactly a household chores kind of person.

It wasn't difficult to see that Luna was struggling with the idea that she'd have to wait any longer than she already had, so Vina stepped closer and placed a (hopefully) soothing hand on her friend's shoulder and gently guided her towards the kitchen, leaving Trelumne alone in the living room for the moment.

Don't worry Luna, I'll handle the stove. With the two of us it should be easy: cooking is mostly about cutting and mixing ingredients~ (She closed the curtain behind them.) And time will pass faster if you've got something to busy yourself with~

It's not like standing there waiting for the shaman to finish her work would make the work go faster. The playful vixen winked at her friend before making her way to what was presumably the countertop inside this magical treehouse. Crouching down she started rummaging through the urns and large pots in which Trelumne stored her food, her tail swishing behind her.

No shortage of ingredients either, so this should be a breeze~ (She began to fish mushrooms and vegetables out of the containers.) Might be easiest to just make a soup, and that should last us however long it'll take Trelumne to finish her preparations~[/color]

If Luna had no further objections the druidess would put her to work assisting her in the cooking. The recipe thankfully involved no complicated steps: as Vina had said before, it was mostly just cleaning and cutting up the ingredients, then adding them to the soup at the correct time while Vina stirred it. Barring accidents, the kitchen would soon be filled with a pleasant and earthly aroma, which conveniently also drowned out the decidedly less delicious scents that were slowly drifting in from the living room.

When most of the work had been done and they just needed to let it simmer for a while Trelumne's voice came through the curtain as well.

My preparations are done, so you can come here whenever you're ready.

Vina nodded and yelled back.

Just a minute!

Turning back towards the soup she checked to make sure that they could leave it unattended for a bit before turning to Luna, smiling brightly.

There we go then! It shouldn't take too long, so we can just leave the soup as it is~

There was little point in delaying things any longer: opening the curtain Vina beckoned for Luna to follow her back to the living room, where the markings on the floor had turned into a full circle with candles and bowls meticulously placed about. The candles were burning with a ghostly blue flame, and instead of warming the place up it seemed a tad colder than before. A familiar sensation for Luna by this point, even if a lot weaker than before: the Shimmerspot Caps were doing their thing.

Trelumne was seated at one end of the circle, and as Luna entered she beckoned towards the centre of the circle, where two smaller circles were drawn, forming the focus of the entire layout.

Take place in the larger circle: your friend will appear in the other. (She held a bowl of red-purple liquid towards Luna.) Drink this when I tell you to.

Vina grabbed Luna's hand and gave it a reassuring squeeze before stepping to the side, making sure she wouldn't somehow get involved in the process.

Don't worry, Trelumne won't mess up.

Well, she could probably handle cutting stuff up for the meal preparation, unless the game was about to blindside her with some kind of random chance or dice roll mechanic for these kinds of things. She'd yet to experience any kind of 'skill check' yet though, so as long as she didn't actually screw things up then things would probably go fine. So she allowed herself to move over with Vina, shrugging her shoulders lightly.

It's at least good that this isn't forcing me to roll dice to see if I can do it correctly. The random chance of just being unlucky can't screw this up.

Plus it seemed that the meal they'd be preparing would be quite simple. Making soups or stews was just about the easiest type of cooking that could exist, given that it usually amounted to just tossing things into a pot with a liquid base and cooking them down. It was a very vegetarian meal, though that was to be expected given that they were in some kind of druidic grove or something.

Granted, there was no law that said druids had to be vegetarians, or even vegans. Carnivorous behaviour was as natural as herbivorous behaviour was, after all.

Still, eventually Trelumne spoke up, her preparations complete. There was a circle drawn, with Trelumne sitting at one end of it. As directed, Luna moved to lay down in the larger circle, whilst Vina stepped to the side.

I'm ready.

There was little for Vina to do but watch now. She didn't have the skillset to assist Trelumne, and the ritual did not call for her involvement either. With Luna laying down in the circle the druidess kept a safe distance so she wouldn't disturb anything, her azure gaze remaining on her friend with a look that was equally supportive and confident: Trelumne would successfully perform the ritual, so Luna had no reason to be worried.

Once Luna was in position Trelumne closed her eyes and visibly focused, tuning out the world around her as she began to slowly chant. The chant sounded a bit like a song, but a slow and deliberate song, something connected to the ancient world before the time of civilization, when all stories were remembered in song rather than scrolls.

The candles had clearly been made from the Shimmerspot Caps somehow, as indicated by the ghostly blue flames they produced which bathed the entire room in an eerie light. With the entire room closed off it was almost like they were isolated from the rest of the world, and about to enter another world entirely. The green wood they'd gathered appeared to serve multiple purposes: most of it had been placed in the bowls that helped complete the ritual circle, whilst others formed a ring around the whole setup to distinctly divide the inside from the outside. If Vina looked closely she thought she could see how the smoke of the candles never actually left that boundary, but she couldn't be certain due to the lighting and how little smoke there was.

As Trelumne kept chanting her voice began to echo, the strange sounds becoming even stranger until there was the question whether they were truly being formed by an elven tongue. The ghastly light made her visage look otherworldly, which matched her voice in a very disturbing fashion.

Luna had already experienced what it was like to be on the border between the world of the living and the world of the dead, but this was different. That same sensation was there, building up and becoming stronger... but at the same time she felt her own body more acutely than ever. Like she could count every single hair on her skin, feel how her blood flowed through every part of her body. But at the same time this also made her more keenly aware of how her body was not her own: there was something in there mixed with her, the other presence that had turned her into this feline chimaera. This other presence stirred as well, responding to the ritual as it slowly approached its crescendo.

The blue flames from the candles grew longer, reached into the air and towards each other. They wavered in an unseen and unfelt wind, but still reached further and further, fingers of ghostblaze that sought to connect. Trelumne's voice was soft yet filled the room, each syllable echoing inside the ears. There was sweat beading on her forehead and her arms trembled as she held them at her sides. Somebody with sharp eyes would have noticed that her entire body was covered in goosebumps.

There was a brief pause in the chanting, a pause in which the flames froze as well, waiting for what came next.

Drink!

It was the only recognisable word Trelumne had spoken so far, and it was a clear command. There was a strong urgency in her voice, the shaman knowing that if this pause held for too long there could be severe consequences.

The moment Luna emptied the bowl she'd find that, while it tasted awful, it didn't bother her: it wasn't part of her, so just like the rest of the room it felt far away, removed. That is, until it reached her core and spread throughout her body, at which point it felt like snakes of mist were slithering through her body, seeking to escape. The bowls of green wood began to produce mist as well, a low fog that spread across the circle and clung to Luna's skin.

Trelumne frowned as she kept chanting, but her expression became more intense, more focused, more worried. Vina was still confident, but seeing that the elven shaman was clearly not having an easy time did give her some pause. However, there was no opportunity to ask: Trelumne couldn't interrupt her work, and Luna wouldn't understand what was going on. Instead she closed her eyes and hummed softly, so softly that it was barely perceptible. However, that steady rhythm would still reach Trelumne, providing a sense of stability and certainty which helped the elf steel herself as she tackled a complication she'd neglected to take into consideration.

She'd told the two adventurers to retrieve the blood of a living alpha predator, and they'd done exactly as she'd bidden. However, what she hadn't said was that, if possible, the alpha predator wasn't the same as the creature Luna found herself merged with. The lifeblood of the alpha predator combined with the aetheric properties of the Shimmerspot Cap was supposed to serve as a bridge through which the creature could be extracted from Luna's body, but now it was in danger of being dragged straight into the world of the dead.

Raising her trembling arms Trelumne chanted with more force, her expression now firm as the cold flowing through Luna's body finally found its exit, flowing out of her mouth and nose to join the mist produced by the bowls. She could feel the other presence inside of her departing along with it, but... it felt like she herself was also beginning to get pulled along, not her body but the part of her that could feel her body. Something was holding her there, inside of herself, but the pull was growing stronger, and stronger, and stronger...

Right when it felt like she might actually be forced out of her own body a new warmth flowed through her. Or rather, her own being responded to the challenge and answered it with fervour. All the mist flew out of her in one burst, a golden glow enveloping her as both the cold, the strangeness, and the other presence departed, along with all her energy, spent to keep herself whole... if not the same as she was before.

Her feline traits remained, but not as they used to be: the black stripes were gone, and the pure white had been replaced by a beautiful gold, like the sun emerging from the horizon to banish the night. It was clear that the ritual had successfully separated Natiri from her, leaving her one person once more, but it had still left its mark on her.

Meanwhile, the mists from her own body and the bowls had risen up into a swirling clump in the air, right underneath the spot where the ghostly flames met. The blueblaze reached down into the mists and began to burn them away, white nothingness dispering while a condensation of... something... drifted down into the smaller circle opposite of Luna. Like light made liquid it pooled and shimmered, gathering into a vague spherical form which condensed further and further, becoming more defined even as it shrank until it was significantly smaller than a tiger, or even a human.

Instead, once the flames had finished burning away the mists and the shape in the circle had been fully defined, there was a small lion cub curled up in the middle, its fur as golden as Luna's. It was unconscious, but a very subtle movement of its small body indicated that it was breathing, and alive.

And almost without warning the ritual ended: the ghostly flames scattered and died, the light in the room became warm and cozy once more, and the sensation of worlds threatening to collide vanished as if it had never been. The main indicators that the ritual had even happened were the smell, Luna and the cub... and Trelumne, who promptly collapsed, prompting Vina to quickly come over and check if the elven shaman hadn't overexerted herself.

Are you all right?

While she was kneeling next to the panting shaman the question was also thrown at Luna, the vixen trying to pay attention to the both of them at the same time.

The ritual was bizarre and far above Luna's head. The singing chants weren't anything she could make out, perhaps they were a language or dialect that just didn't exist in reality in any meaningful enough way for her to have ever picked up? Either way, it left her feeling much like she imagined a passenger must feel like in a runaway train or plane. Powerless to really effect anything that was happening around her, or even to her. All she could really do was shut her eyes and hope that things just worked themselves out.

That cloying sensation of death, of the border between life and un-life, returned, stronger than it had been before. Every inch of her that it touched, she became hyper-aware of, as if awakening to an itch or sensation that her mind could never again let go of. Every hair on her arms, every little goosebump that formed across her skin.

From this awareness there could be no other conclusion that could be drawn: her body was infested with something. She was the pilot, but there had always been a passenger, at least in this current iteration of herself. Somebody behind the door that separated passenger from pilot, cut off and inaccessible, but still very much there. Very much effected by anything that could effect the 'plane' itself. Shaken by turbulence, made breathless by pressure.

The voice of the shaman snapped her out of her self-analysis, commanding her to drink. So she raised the bowl to her lips and poured the contents down her throat, swallowing rapidly and trying beyond any measure to avoid having to process the taste, though even then, some managed to assail her. It was foul, there could be no mistake. But it was also inconsequential.

What did flavor matter?

What mattered was the sensation. Something crawling around beneath her skin, or perhaps slithering around, pushing against the seams as if it wanted to rip itself free. It wanted to rip free of her body through her skin, but it couldn't. The mortal body was built to contain the spirit. In the end, it found the one exit that was always available to the spirit. The experience that all mortals shared.

The final breath.

Smoke poured from her mouth and nostrils as this thing escaped her, feeling for all the world that her spirit was departing alongside the passenger. With her eyes closed, the burst of gold light was lost to Luna, as was the golden glow that clung to her. Her body tingled and ached, protesting and rejoicing at the change all at once.

And then it was over. Luna's eyes burst open, vaulting upwards as a cacophony of coughs and sputters spilled from her lips. Her throat felt raw, but also completely fine at the same time. It was an almost spiritual rawness, like her soul had been put through the wringer but her body was fine.

Ack, my throat...

She sputtered some more, faintly navigating her inventory for a waterskin and downing half of it, breaking away with a sigh. She looked at Vina, at the collapsed shaman, then to the sleeping lion cub. Then again to the lion cub. A lion cub.

What...?

I...don't remember ever fusing with one of those.

She pushed herself to her feet shakily. Her body still felt pretty powerful, though she'd lost the raw power of the tiger. Everything else felt fine. Her hands. Her arms. Her ears. Her tail.

Wait, tail?

Vina? Why am I still part animal?
