Stepping closer to the hole Vina peered into it, trying in vain to see something with her night vision. Unfortunately, even night vision still requires there to be some kind of light, and beyond the first couple of meters the tunnel they were about to enter was devoid of any.

Light magic... Not exactly, but...~

Reaching into a pouch Vina pulled out a flute, the playful vixen spinning it between her fingers before extending it. Humming softly a green glow enveloped the musical instrument, the wood shimmering before it grew and changed, quickly becoming as tall as Vina herself. Within moments the druidess was holding a staff rather than a flute, and as she whistled blue sparks danced between the branches forming the head. The blue sparks combined into an electric orb, and as Vina stepped forward into the cave a sharp blue light painted the walls.

It's not perfect, but it'll do~

Compared to what a Light Mage or a Pyromancer could achieve this was far from ideal, but it wasn't like they had a lot of alternatives: Vina didn't exactly carry torches, and given Luna's question she assumed that her friend hadn't prepared for spelunking either.

Don't worry, I've got plenty of energy to spare Luna~ Now let's see where those mushrooms are.

Giving her friend an inviting wink Vina led the way into the cave, leaving the outside world behind for the moment as the two of them descended into the ground. Fortunately the tunnel was large enough that they could walk properly: it would've been difficult for Vina to hold her staff if she had to crawl at the same time.

At first there didn't appear to be anything extraordinary about the tunnel, with walls of dirt and the occasional root, but as they got deeper the air would also become damp, and in the distance there was the sound of waterdrops. The walls became darker as dirt became mud, and eventually the ground would have a groove through which water rolled further down into the depths, accompanying the two of them.

So, glowing music was a thing? Well, really it was the music forming a staff that contained an electric orb which gave off some light. Luna looked at it for a moment, before shrugging and nodding. This was better than anything she could produce, she was pretty sure. She was far from a light mage and even the pyromancy she'd been forced to pick up wasn't exactly the most controlled thing in the world. Setting the place on fire when she was in there sounded like a bad idea.

Well, say something if you are running low on energy and I'll, I dunno, make a torch or something. Pretty sure I can wrap some rags around a stick and strike some rocks together or something.

Still, Vina knew her limits best, so she'd trust the druidess to keep them in mind as they descended into the cave. The deeper they got, the more damp and sodden with moisture everything got. It left Luna not exactly comfortable in her footing or her ability to stay upright, but she slowly followed after Vina, bathed in the flickering light of her electrical orb.

Aside from the dark and the dampness, there was also an almost oppressive silence: aside from their own footsteps, their breathing, and the dripping of water, there were almost no sounds down here. Combined with the dark, it was like they were cut off from the rest of the world, travelling into the depths of the earth while far above, life carried on without them.

Vina frowned a little bit as she led the way onwards, holding her staff forward to help light the way, careful not to trip or slip on anything. The muddy ground meant they had to be more careful with where they put their feet, as it would take only a single misstep for one of them to end up flat on their face. A saving grace was the fact that there weren't any rocks for them to crack their skull on... although the hardened roots probably wouldn't offer a pleasant landing either.

How are you feeling Luna?

It wasn't the first time Vina had ended up underground, but she had to admit that this place was a little bit unnerving. Her ears were pointing forward in an attempt to hear something other than dripping and her own breathing, but if there were other sounds present they didn't reach the druidess.

What did reach her, however, was a faint glow in the distance: far ahead of them something was shining, and as they got closer it turned out to be multiple things. She couldn't make out any details, but the idea that they were getting closer to their destination did lighten Vina's heart a bit.

It was quiet, enough so to be offputting in a way, or oppressive in another way. She felt odd, like there was nothing around them. It was a far from companionable silence, about as far as it possibly could be. She didn't really feel confident about any of this, Vina was the expert and the guide and she was just kind of following around, not really offering much aside from the fact that this entire quest was for her own benefit.

When Vina asked her how she was feeling, she wasn't quite sure how to answer it. She didn't really know how she felt.

I don't know. I'd like to get this over and done with, really. It feels like every time I get close to making progress, nothing actually happens.

She sighed and shook her head, noticing the faing glow just a little bit after Vina did. She turned to Vina, looking at her.

Is that glow what we're looking for?

Vina halted for a moment to pat Luna on the shoulder, trying to offer some comfort to her friend.

Don't worry Luna, I think we'll be done quite soon~ We've already got the blood, so now we just need the fungal boon~

There was also the green wood, but that was the easiest part of the ingredients to acquire: almost every single part of the Tangleweaves would qualify, so as soon as they got the Shimmerspot Caps Trelumne had asked for they'd practically be done already.

Her hand slid down from Luna's shoulder to her hand, the vixen interweaving her fingers with her friend's even as both of them noticed the faint glow in the distance. Tilting her head Vina hummed briefly before smiling

Only one way to find out~ Let's go!
\

With their objective possibly in sight Vina pulled Luna with her as she resumed her path, stepping over the little waterway as it crossed the tunnel. Her steps were lighter than before, and as they got closer the tunnel around them grew wider and taller as well, until Vina's electric light no longer reached the ceiling or the walls... but at the same time they were met by different lights.

The floor was adorned with many pale, silver lights coming from the mushrooms growing everywhere, with some even sticking out of the walls. Blue, tendril-like vines formed strange patterns on the high ceiling as well, emitting their own otherworldly glow even if their height meant they failed to illuminate much.

But beyond the mushrooms and the vines there was a more ethereal light, drifting through the air without explanation for its source: multiple, in fact, each moving independently and sometimes crossing through each other without rhyme or reason. There was a chill in the air, not the chill of frost or winter but the chill of a place where the sun didn't reach...

The light from the mushrooms did indicate that there were other tunnels leading to this place as well, some upwards and some even further downward. Almost all of the tunnels leading upwards also had water leaking into the pool in the middle of the cavern, the smooth surface regularly disturbed by droplets falling down from the ceiling, the ripples making the silver light from the mushrooms dance across the walls.

...I think this is what we're looking for, see~?

Vina was the expert here. At the very least, knowing that it was nearly over was a pretty nice thing. Granted, the journey back was probably going to be just as difficult, if not harder, than the journey they'd taken to get down into these caves. She wasn't looking forward to that particular endeavor, given that she wasn't exactly an experienced outdoorsman, by any means. She was looking forward to finally having an unfused body that she could actually be comfortable with.

She allowed Vina to pull her along, the two of them bathed in the light the girl's staff was projecting. It was immediately apparent that Vina was lighter than her, floatier and moving much more easily. The further they moved, the more the limitations of that light source showed, until they were standing in a chamber of glowing mushrooms.

How mushrooms evolved to glow, she'd never know, but she was glad they were finally here, finding what needed to be found.

Okay! So, what do we need to do? Just take the mushrooms themselves?

At first Vina was impressed by the sight, the mushrooms with the glowing silver spots combining with the bioluminescent blue vines on the ceiling. However, the longer she stared the more the ethereal lights drifting through the cavern bothered her, to the extent that when Luna asked her what they had to do next she didn't immediately answer, instead peering at the strange intangible shapes.

I think... Yes, we should take the mushrooms. (She blinked.) And we probably shouldn't stick around for too long either~

One of those floating shapes was drifting towards them, and with it came a chill which made a shiver run down Vina's spine. The druidess pulled Luna along and away from the drifting light, the chill weakening as they created some distance.

...Remember how Trelumne said that Shimmerspot Caps can weaken the barriers between the living and the dead?

The drifting light they had just evaded kept moving until it threatened to enter the tunnel the two of them had arrived from, but then stopped and floated back towards the ceiling. However, the other ethereal figures were drifting about as well, and Vina's voice grew more concerned as she tried to keep the two of them as far away from the chilling lights as possible.

You wouldn't happen to know soul magic Luna?

Well, at least she wasn't going to be squeezing the juice out of mushrooms or something, since that would probably make her puke or something. Still, more worryingly, Vina was noticing something. Some kind of floating shape or light that Vina pulled her away from, one that seemed to sap the warmth from her bones even from just a small proximity. Luna shuddered, shaking her head to clear it and giving the shape a weary look.

And then Vina mentioned that the person who had sent them here had said that the mushrooms weakened the barrier between life and death. She wasn't entirely sure what to do about that information, really, a cold sweat pouring down the back of her neck.

Uh, sorry. Soul stuff isn't exactly something I'm capable of.

She looked at Vina, before looking around again and swallowing, sweating nervously.

So, what should we do? Do you wanna grab the mushrooms whilst I hold these things off, or should I grab them whilst you handle things?

With neither of them capable of dealing with souls the presence of these ethereal lights was far from pleasant. Vina held Luna by the arm as she guided her friend, trying to put as much distance between them and the lights as possible without leaving the cavern entirely.

Fortunately the spirits didn't appear to be very focused: while they would occasionally flow in their direction their assault was lackluster, and every time they missed they'd drift around for a while before trying again. Nevertheless, the fact that there were multiple ethereal lights in the cavern meant that there wasn't a moment's rest, the two of them constantly in danger of getting approached by those chilling intangible shapes, their presence threatening to drain warmth and life from their flesh.

We don't know exactly what happens if we touch them, but...~

Vina considered Luna's suggestion: they did still need the mushrooms, but if they weren't careful the spirits would get them. After several seconds she nodded.

I think I can distract them: you get the mushrooms~!

Letting go of her friend she gave Luna a gentle push and a smile before stepping away. Walking closer to the nearest light she waited for it to start moving towards her before she slowly backed away, and as she moved her feet her lips began to move as well, a soft song slipping out with a haunting melody behind it.

Anar'alah~
Anar'alah belore~
Sin'dorei~

Shindu fallah na~
Sin'dorei~
Anar'alah~
Shindu Sin'dorei~

Given that she was a songstress one thing she could do was cause a distraction, and if the ethereal beings could react to them maybe they could hear her as well.

At first it didn't seem like the song was doing much, but eventually the lights began to move more predictably, trailing behind Vina as she slowly made her way around the cavern, ducking to avoid getting too close to one of the spirits while also watching her feet so she didn't stumble on any roots or rocks. Her haunting song seemed to fill the cavern, and now she had a whole entourage of spirits coming after her even as she threw a glance towards Luna to see how her friend was doing.

Now that the ethereal lights were all moving towards Vina the mushrooms were there for the taking, their silver spots glimmering in the blue light of the ceiling. The mushrooms formed a circle around the pool of water in the middle of the cavern, and as Luna got close she might be filled with an ominous feeling... as if there was still something else in the air.

And if she looked too closely at the pool she might see things in there other than her reflection, the smooth surface seemingly reflecting the visage of things which were nowhere to be seen in the cavern, the unexplained sights shifting every time a droplet of water disturbed the surface.

She really wasn't sure what to do about the whole situation, but given that Vina typically knew more, it was probably a good idea to follow her lead. She continued to dip and duck out of the way of the floating spirits whenever she could, but it was going to be a losing battle if they continued to be swarmed. There wasn't much that she could do, though. So when Vina recommended that she go to pick the mushrooms, she nodded and lurched forward into a sprint.

And tried to ignore her friend's song. She shook her head and forced it from her attention, focusing instead on sprintintg towards the mushrooms that circled a pool of water. She had no real interest in really examining them properly, she just wanted to leave before they were eaten by spirits or whatever these things wanted to do.

Once she reached them, she wasted no time gripping them by their stems and, quite violently, ripping them from the ground without a second thought. Strange visions in the pool and the strange feeling in the air be damned, she wanted nothing more than to not be here and to get this over and done with.

Vina wasn't sure how long she could keep the... spirits(?) busy like this. So far they seemed to be drawn in by her song, ignoring Luna completely as they drifted after the vulpine siren, but she wasn't so confident in her ability to appeal to ghosts. Keeping ahead of them wasn't very difficult, as they didn't move very swiftly or intelligently, but if she just stayed outside of their reach they might start spreading out again... or she might trip over some of the thick roots that adorned the cave's edges.

Fortunately Luna was having little to no difficulty acquiring the mushrooms: the ominous feeling rose sharply whenever she grabbed one of the mushrooms, but as long as she didn't get distracted by the ephemeral shapes in the water's surface the ominous feeling would stay just that, a feeling. The mushrooms themselves had no capacity for defending themselves, and their otherworldly guardians had yet to react.

As Vina's song came to an end the druidess switched to her flute, vocals replaced by prolonged notes that lingered in the air, telling a wordless story of love and loss, of the living and the dead, the former of which having to accept the presence of the latter. Like her song it did a good enough job to keep the spectres occupied that Luna could finish harvesting the mushrooms without getting harassed by them... although that ominous feeling did remain with her even when she stepped away from the waters and the supernatural fungi.

Around her the world felt... frail, in a sense. As if she was seeing it clearly for the first time, revealing the layers usually shrouded from her eyes. Those ghostly lights following Vina now looked more distinctly like figures to Luna's eyes, shimmering and shifting yet somehow showing humanoid features like hands that reached towards the songstress as she did her best to stay ahead of the crowd.

It was a frantic, mad flurry of effort to pluck mushrooms. In any other situation it would have felt ridiculous, grasping them by the stems and plucking them as quickly as was physically possible for her. Hell, she was actually bodily tossing herself between patches of mushrooms as if she was ducking and rolling underneath hails of gunfire and massive explosions. Anything to cut down on the amount of time that the task took. It truly felt ridiculous.

But then she felt the way the air seemed alive, or different. There was an almost rancid taste on the tongue that she associated now with spirits, undeath and necromancy. There could be no guarantee that a spirit was kind, malicious or anything in-between and neither of them were really equipped to deal with spirits or anything of the like.

Finally, she plucked a few more mushrooms from the ground, stuffing them quickly and seamlessly into her inventory with a wordless snarl of desperation, before clambering to her feet and turning to Vina, who was now shrouded by spirits that reached out for her.

I think I have enough, so let's get the hell out of here!

She dashed back towards Vina, before grasping the songstress by the arm and making a break for the exit to this place.

There still were plenty of mushrooms left around the water surface once Luna stuffed the last handfuls away: it would have taken too long for her to take all of them, at least while she was under the pressure of finishing her task before Vina ran out of space to evade the spectres.

Still, by now Luna had enough of the magical mushrooms with her that the otherworldly sensation was impossible to ignore: the air wasn't so much freezing as just lacking warmth, her surroundings were slightly faded as if shrouded by the faintest of fogs, and if she strained her hearing she could hear a wind which had no place here far underneath the surface.

Fortunately this awareness of reality beyond the mundane also allowed her to easily evade the spectres even as she dashed to grab Vina and lead her to safety: their ethereal arms were clearly visible to her, and her fast movements far surpassed their almost lethargic reflexes.

Vina barely had time to acknowledge Luna's cry before her friend made the decision for her by grabbing her arm and yanking her away from the chilling lights, leading her back towards the entrance from which they'd arrived into this strange buried chamber. In the process one of the lights almost touched her, the songstress shivering as even such proximity already gave her a feeling of... wrongness. Like it would be really bad if she did actually come into contact with the spectres.

However, the spectres were quickly left behind by the two of them, the lights all collectively floating after the adventurers in vain. Luna's enhanced perception allowed her to see some of their expressions: remorse, regret, bitterness, longing. Whatever these spectres were, they clearly were not happy spirits, and for a moment it seemed they'd follow the tigress and the vixen out of the hole. However, once the two of them had gotten far enough that the light of the chamber began to disappear the spectres stopped, slowly flowing back down into their eternal resting place.

For Luna the strange awareness remained, and while the world around her had a faded quality to it the dark didn't blind her either: as long as she focused on what lay ahead she could make out the path, guiding her vulpine friend through the dark back to the world of the living, even as the world of the dead seemed to cling to her.

That was... interesting~ (Vina smiled as she held Luna's hand.) Trelumne did say that these Shimmerspot Caps can weaken the barrier between our world and the afterlife, but I didn't think there'd be actual ghosts~ Are you all right Luna?

Vina had experienced enough adventures that she wasn't so easily frightened any more, especially since they hadn't actually been attacked: the spectres had been ominous, but thankfully slow enough that the druidess had been able to dance out of their reach for long enough that the tigress could do her work.

With neither of them intending to stick around soon the path ahead would slowly become lit by daylight, flowing down into the earth through the exit as if they'd never left. The air began to grow warmer as well, even if for Luna that warmth felt distant, as if she was aware of it but couldn't actually feel it for herself.

They raced away, quickly abandoning the spirits to their rest. Neither woman was equipped to do anything about it and neither really knew if anybody was even supposed to do anything about it in the first place. They had to race fast, but the spirits didn't really stand much of a chance of catching them and largely just remained behind, waiting in place until the light of the chamber faded in the distance. There was very little else to do other than leave and return to wherever they had come from.

There was a strange sensation, though. As if a filter had been forced over her point of view, shading everything and giving it a faded quality, like staring at an old photograph or movie. There was very little need to consider it, though. It was clearly an effect of having the mushrooms in her inventory.

Hopefully it was only temporary.

I'm okay. It's making my eyesight a little strange, but otherwise I'm fine. How about you? Those things nearly made some actual contact with you back there.

Still, the warmth of the sunlight felt faded and distant. Immediately, Luna came to a conclusion. She very much didn't want to keep ahold of these mushrooms for longer than she needed to.

Vina hadn't thought much about what having so many Shimmerspot Caps in your inventory would do to you, so Luna noting that her vision was kind of strange did make the vixen worry as she came to a halt to stand in front of Luna, studying her friend more closely.

It's messing with your eyes? You seemed to be fine leading the way out~

Placing her hands on the sides of Luna's head the druidess channelled some of her magic, trying to figure out if there was some way for her to mitigate the effects. From Luna's perspective Vina's touch was as distant as the sun's warmth: from Vina's perspective it was like a chill clinging to Luna's skin, not cold enough to be bothersome but still noticeable.

Don't worry about me Luna~ They did get close, but they didn't touch me. I think they enjoyed my performance~ (She frowned.) It's a good thing we got out when we did though: if they really were ghosts they might've tried to steal our warmth for themselves.

She wasn't an expert on the undead, corporeal or ethereal, but it was common folklore that some spirits would seek the warmth of the living even if they couldn't experience it for themselves any longer, only serving to hasten those they haunted towards an early grave. Thankfully these spirits chose to haunt that place instead, where the mushrooms allowed them to interact with the world of the living even if there were no people to bother.

You seem to be healthy, but I think the mushrooms are affecting you somehow. I might be able to counteract that a little if you'd let me?

It might be that her idea would work, or it could do nothing at all. Still, if those mushrooms truly were allowing the world of the dead to cling to Luna Vina would rather try to put a stop to that, or minimise the effects it had on her friend if at al possible.

She blinked, examining her sight once more, before she shook her head in response to Vina's question. They came to a stop with Vina in front of her, though Luna did have to blink. The effect on her eyes was getting irritating quite quickly.

Well, it's not like a massively debilitating effect. It's more like my vision has all been turned into like, a washed out or faded film from the 60's or 70's, you know what I mean?

Granted, it certainly wouldn't have made sharpshooting easier, if she was the type to sharpshoot in the first place. Though she'd been separated from ranged combat ever since this glitch had fused her with her old pet and Arcanamancy had lost any ability to shoot massive laser beams.

Well, they can steal the warmth if they want to. I'd rather that than them stealing our souls or lifeforce or something like that. I'm not exactly thrilled about the idea of dealing with spirits in general.

Still, if Vina wanted to help her with this mushroom effect, she wasn't going to stop her friend. As long as it didn't slow them down too much, that was. She was eager to get this potion, or spell, or whatever it was that would fix her, and get the whole ordeal over with.

You know I trust you. Do whatever you want to.

Like one of those really old movies? All washed out?

It did somewhat fit the idea of getting into contact with the afterlife: from the perspective of the living it probably was quite dreary. Or perhaps the living mind just couldn't parse what it was perceiving properly. Vina wouldn't waste too much time on those kinds of questions when she was focusing on helping her friend. Even if the effect wasn't debilitating she could tell that Luna was on edge, which was enough reason for Vina to try her best.

Some spirits can be quite friendly, but I agree that with these types it's better to keep your distance. Not much we can do to help them, sadly~

Vina being Vina she'd happily spend time with those spirits if it would actually do something, but whatever curse or memories caused them to gather inside that cave wasn't something she could fix with good intent alone. To try might be altruistic but ultimately stupid.

Luna, however, she could help, and with the tigress's approval the druidess stepped forward and embraced her friend, channelling her magic as she hummed softly.

Focus on my voice for now, okay~?

Her plan was actually very simple: with her magic she could fill somebody with vitality and temporarily boost their senses as well. Hopefully giving Luna a dose of druidic invigoration would counteract the effects of the mushrooms well enough that they could make their way back to Oflainn without any incidents.

At first Vina's touch and voice remained somewhat distant for Luna, but as Vina's magic flowed through her the effects of the mushrooms lessened... somewhat. They didn't go away entirely, but some colour returned to the world around her and Vina's voice no longer sounded like it was coming from afar.

Of course, the moment that Vina stopped channelling her magic and stepped away the effects reinforced themselves, leaving Luna in an in-between state where she wasn't as removed from the world of the living from before but wasn't entirely there yet either.

I hope that helps a little Luna~ Still, better to finish this quest as quickly as possible so you can give Trelumne those mushrooms. I think we only need the green wood, don't we~?

The green wood was by far the easiest part of the quest, which was why Vina had kept it for last. Green wood from a tree grown from the Allfather Tree meant almost literally any tree from the Tangleweaves, so they could go back to the edge of the jungle and harvest wood from one of the trees there before returning to their elven friend.

Yeah, like the really old movies, or like the grainy faded old polaroid pictures. Just like a really washed out, almost greytone appearance to everything. It's like the most boring color palette out there.

Still, she wasn't quite expecting to be embraced, though she did her best to do as Vina was instructing and focus on the woman's voice. It was clear that Vina was casting some kind of magic, it was easy to guess when the vixen's magic was based off of her voice and movements after all. It was filling her with...something. She wasn't exactly sure what, but a clear notification of a buff appeared on her HUD.

It didn't exactly fix the problem. It wasn't as if everything was immediately back to normal, considering that everything was still pretty washed out and lifeless looking. Having all of the saturation sucked out of the world did make things pretty depressing.

Thanks. It's a little better, though it's not perfect.

She nodded, fixing Vina with a thankful stare before she turned away.

Let's go and get this finished. I'd like to get these mushrooms out of my inventory as soon as possible.

Whatever affliction the mushrooms bestowed upon Luna wasn't so easily cured, and even with Vina's magic Luna confirmed that the effects were still there, even if the druidess's efforts did help a little bit at least. Still, that was as good a reason as any to not waste any more time than necessary finishing the quest, the vixen nodding in agreement.

Agreed~ That said, we'll first have to get back up.

They were still on the root pathway which led into the underground area, and they'd gotten there by jumping off the path leading back towards the edge of the jungle. This time Vina stepped forward and led the way to where they'd jumped off, looking up with a hand shielding her eyes from the sun at the equally large root quite a distance above them.

Well, I do have an idea for getting back up there... but can you think of an easy way up Luna~?

Vina's method would definitely work, but if they were in a hurry she hoped that her friend could come up with an alternative which took less effort. After all, creating a pathway back up using her druidic magic would actually take some doing: jumping down had been easy in comparison, since all she'd needed to do was make sure they didn't hit the ground too hard. If this were the beginning of the journey it wouldn't be an issue, but even if Vina wouldn't immediately admit it the encounter with the spectres had an impact on her.

Well, that was going to be a problem. Getting down was easy, it was just a matter of offsetting gravity enough to not die upon impact. Getting up was going to be a lot, lot harder and as she craned her neck to look upwards, it dawned on Luna just how little she was actually could do, as she realized that she had absolutely no idea how on earth they would manage to get back up. Well, aside from one way that was, admittedly, very obvious to just about anybody and everybody.

I mean, we could climb it? That's all I'm getting, really, sorry.

They could brute force it and just climb, but that wouldn't exactly be a fast or energy-lite solution to the issue. Vina would be able to do more, she figured. This kind of locale was exactly the druid's kind of domain, surrounded by plantlife and such, so Luna figured her friend would most likely have a better method than simply brute forcing their way up by hand.

Yeah, I don't really have anything that helps with anything outside of an actual fight. I'm currently stuck with a build that only really focuses on enduring damage.
