"AAAAAAAAAARRRRRRGHHH!"

Eva quickly turned as an ear-piercing scream filled the air, alerting them to the position of at least one of the adventurers. Quickly dashing into a sprint, the woman gestured Kyanna to follow her to rush into the source of that sound.

"The screaming means he's still alive, it's our immediate priority."

With how long since they found the two adventurers, it's possible that the rest have been killed off, depending on how many Gnolls were there in the hunting party. But now at least they know somebody survived, their best chance was to regroup with them if they want to have any chance of pushing back the hunters.

Her hands went into her pockets, holding two balls of flash grenade in her left hand and one smoke grenade in her right, Eva crossed her arms, ready to throw them as they neared the source of the screaming.

Kyanna pursed her lips, nodding eagerly at Eva, agreeing with her entirely and rushing ahead. She would never want to leave someone behind, and it warmed her, even in this terrifying moment, that the other woman felt the same. Even if it was probably just an optimal choice.

As both of them approached the screams, Kyanna and Eva would notice, tied and upside down by a branch, a struggling bandit, that looked at both of them with a horrified stare, while the screams continued.

Kyanna didn't waste a second, rushing ahead--

But Eva knew something was off. Where the screaming was coming from..? After all, the tied bandit's mouth was shut, and even if it wasn't, the screams were way too deep to fit that feminine body. The truth came with a sudden, blunt hit, smashing against Kyanna's body and head, before throwing her aside as she rolled on the ground, struggling and coughing as she felt a throbbing pain.

The scream continued, but this time, much closer, before a body was thrown in front of the witch, that was still recovering.

It was a man, eyes rolled behind his back and with dried tears on his cheek, having a fatal wound crossing his throat. He was limp, devoid of life. Kyanna's eyes grew wide and in horror, not really understanding what she was looking at before she looked up, noticing a giant, canine monstrosity.

It screamed, a scream that mimicked the horrified screams of the dead bandit, before it slowly mixed into a maniac laughter, feeling joy at the girl's suffering as it rose its three-headed flail once again, each of the head being a skull of a dead humanoid, beastfolk, elf and human. It was ready to kill the pathetic witch that had just fallen into its ambush.

Bloodfang's Actions

Bloodfang is a deadly gnoll, having not a single glimpse of mercy. Upon being in his sight, the only freedom that awaits you is death.

Introduction Action - Ambusher. Bloodfang dealt 24 damage on those that failed the Knowledge Check (@Kyanna Wynne), rendering her Stunned (Cannot act this cycle).

In the following Cycles (Its turn will always be at the start of Kyanna's post), it will do one of these three actions:

Meatshield. Bloodfang thrust its clawed hands forward, dealing 2d20 damage and forcing the target to make a DC 60 Reflex or Fortitude Save. Upon failure, the target is grappled (Movement is considered zero, and can only use either one action or one bonus action, never both). On top of that, damage dealt on the Bloodfang from anyone but him and the grappled target will have half of it divided between them. If this action is rolled again while Bloodfang has someone grappled, he will bash someone using the grappled target as a weapon, dealing 2d20 damage at both.

Bite of Insanity. Bloodfang charges in, sinking its dire fangs deep into a target's flesh. The target must pass a DC 60 Will Save, to avoid feeling sudden dizziness and lack of control of its own consciousness. If they fail, they will spend their Cycle attacking an ally, making a Standard Attack that will have its total roll divided by 4 (for PvP balancing).

Flail of the Tri Fallen. Bloodfang swing its three-headed flail, dealing 1d20 damage thrice, targeting each of the three heads against random targets.

Reaching 0 SP will make Bloodfang Vulnerable for one cycle, before it is all filled up once again.

As soon as Eva noticed the hanged bandit, she knew something was wrong. There was no way the screaming came from her, so who produced that voice?

Suddenly, Kyanna was struck heavily with a blow from the side, catching both of them off guard. A dead body was tossed in the girl's direction, before the hunter revealed itself, mockingly screaming, perfectly mimicking a human male's scream. It showed off its trophy; a three-headed flail made of skulls.

There was never a hunting party. This gnoll was the lone, ultimate hunter, using its cunning and intelligence to pick off each member of the adventurers easily.

Eva quickly threw both of the smoke bombs towards the hunter, designed to impair both the sense of sight and smell as she rushed to Kyanna's side while swiftly donning a combat mask that's designed to block the effects of her own gadgets. "Your head okay? I'm going to give you some painkillers in the meantime." The woman knelt, brought out multiple syringe vials, and injected those into the fungimancer's arm. "Antidote hasn't fully synthesized yet, but I'm administering it to you, just in case."

The surprise attack came as a shock, and both of them had never encountered an enemy this strong. But pain relief and reassurance was the only thing she could give to Kyanna right now.

"Only one enemy, we can do this." The smoke slowly dispersed, as Eva aimed both of her wrist crossbows toward the Gnoll.

Kyanna groaned, feeling her head dizzy and her vision blur until she felt a prickle on her arm, making her wince momentarily before blinking and opening her eyes widely. Eva's words began making sense again, and her face was suddenly focused, with the throbbing on her bruises fading out as she reached to hold on the white-haired woman.

"Th-Thank you, thank you--" She winced, trying to get back on her feet before noticing the alchemical cloud that was before them.

For a moment, a silence occurred, but a pair of brimming scarlet eyes appeared through it, with the large silhouette shaking as a laugher faded in, increasing its volume before the monstrosity charged in, aiming directly at Eva.

Kyanna's eyes grew wide, letting go of the woman while somewhat trying to get in the way of the creature while summoning a large Myconid from the ground.

The creature clashed against the gnoll, but despite the fact it successfully held it back for a moment, the brutality of the monstrosity was stronger, and it pushed through to try and reach Eva.

Kyanna's summoned Myconid stood between them and the Gnoll before it was pushed away after holding it back for some time, buying time for Eva to reload her wrist crossbows with special kinds of penetrating bolts. Firing the bolts towards its torso, the Gnoll moved quickly to avoid getting hit in the vital places, and so the bolts made their mark on the right shoulder.

The frenzied laughter soon turned into menacing laughter as the hunter dashed towards the woman with one arm extended, its clawed hands trying to get a hold of her. As it managed to grab Eva's jacket, the white-haired woman instinctively spun to escape from it, quickly abandoning the jacket and getting a claw wound on her back in the process.

She jumped back, assessing the stinging pain in her upper back. "The claw doesn't seem covered in poison or venom," Eva deduced, before reloading her wrist crossbows as the Gnoll was readying itself for another attack. This time, it set its gaze upon Kyanna.

With Eva back to 'safety', albeit with a wide wound on her back, Kyanna could slip a relieved breath, though soon she noticed the maniac gaze of the monstruosity locked on her. There would be no room for a rest, and as she took a step away, she mused outloud-

"Maybe it is the fangs?!"
She exclaimed, pursing her lips as she held her totally-not-a-broomstick staff tightly, trying to avert her position before the gnoll roared another laughter, rumbling something in its unknown, wicked language, before swinging all of its flails and crushing them against Kyanna's sides, even though she managed to partially protect herself, with the summoned Myconid parrying the attack partially.

Gritting her teeth, Kyanna suppressed the pain for a moment, "Now!" She ordered, and the Myconid sank its shape into the ground, wrapping its appendages on Bloodfang, hoping to pin him down and keep him vulnerable for Eva to strike.

"Maybe it is the fangs?!"

Most likely. Can't let herself or Kyanna between its teeth with the minimal amount of cure available. They really have to cut the battle short or both of them will end up like the others; slowly succumbing to its venom until the Gnoll overpowers them.

Eva swiftly reached into her pouch, bringing out two green-tipped small crossbow bolts on her palm; high-explosive incendiary/armor-piercing ammunition. Those things haven't seen too much action, and such are going to be dangerous. But it might be the ace in the hole they needed.

Laughing, the Gnoll rushed, slamming the flails against Kyanna's side. As the woman was reloading, the witch ordered the myconid to sink underground while holding the hunter in place. Unable to move, the creature was an easy target even for the experimental ammunition. The white-haired woman pointed both of her wrists toward its direction.

"Take a step back."

The bolts made their way, planting themselves inside Bloodfang's chest and right shoulder before they produced beeping sounds. Without having any time to react, the bolts exploded, kicking up so much dust and smoke with the resulting shockwave. The payload was certainly enough to blast a hole in any big game animals, but would it be enough even to put down the alpha hunter?

Eva's blast was powerful enough to make Bloodfang, the mighty gnoll, to stumble and half fall on his knee, gritting its bloodied fangs as it took steps away from the duo of preys that were far more complicated than he expected.

He was indeed a ferocious hunter, one that wished to taste their bloods, but he wasn't unwise. He couldn't just let his life fade away, especially with such a grave wound.

Coughing blood, the gnoll held the whole on its chest, feeling pain at every breath before whimpering, using the remains of strength he had to flee.

Kyanna frowned at the sight of the creature running away, with the sight with an investigation mode revealing the creature was under a strange condition called 'Immortal'. It was one Kyanna hadn't seen or heard of yet, but her curiosity didn't last long.

Holding her own wounded sides, Kyanna approached Eva. "A-Are you alright, Eva?" She asked, breathing heavily, then glancing at one of the victims of Bloodfang, hanging upside down and watching the scene with a horrified gaze.

Eva panted, the feeling of the recoil of the bolts she just shot made her arms tremble. The gnoll did not fall, even with the grave injuries that it sustained after two exploding bolts created holes in its body. Unlike Kyanna, she was too tired to use the investigation mode, and thus was unaware of the Immortal condition their enemy had.

"That... doesn't make any sense," the woman muttered under her breath, watching the creature flee after deciding that they were too much for it to handle. "It was a fatal shot, my calculations were correct."

"A-Are you alright, Eva?"

Her still-trembling left hand slowly reached for her belt, took another vial containing red liquid, and promptly injected it into her right arm. It was the painkiller she administered to Kyanna earlier. "Better now," she exhaled, before remembering about the other person who was still hanged upside down. The woman slowly made her way under the victim while instructing Kyanna. "We should get her down now."

The inventor just reloaded her arm crossbow and shot the rope that was binding her to the tree branch, before quickly positioning herself under the person, the same way she caught Kyanna when they first met.

The reveal that Eva was fine made Kyanna slip a long, relieved sigh before giving her a quick and weak hug. "Thank God, that was way, way too scary." Kyanna admitted, pursing her lips as she slipped the hug away, looking at the direction the gnoll had fled.

"Something... Was strange on it. There was something like... 'Immortal' written on it." Kyanna frowned, casting a glance at Eva and frowning. "It is a bit obvious what that means, but to think creatures can become immortal, it is just insane!"

Especially when talking about such a brute and evil monster. Imagine how a high level boss would be, and what it would be capable of.

Kyanna then paused, taking a step back and looking up at the bandit, waiting for Eva to proceed on freeing her from the hanging state.

As she fell, a muffled yelp escaped, but thanks to Eva, she landed safely.

Approaching, Kyanna was quick to try and melt the ropes with a magical fungi. "We are lucky to find at least one of them alive..."

If they had taken any longer...

"It is a bit obvious what that means, but to think creatures can become immortal, it is just insane!"

Perhaps it was something akin to video game passive abilities. But imagine if the creature didn't think of itself and just attacked them while being immortal. They could've been defeated for sure.

The gnoll might be smarter than both of them thought.

Putting the person they saved on the ground, Kyanna helped with melting her bindings.

"Can you walk? Your friends were already with us, treated and resting."

Still shocked, the woman fell to her knees, unable to speak a thing while her eyes locked on her dead companion. Judging by the complexion of the body, it was way too late to try any of the resuscitation skills, and by her reaction, it was probably his last or only life. They never found out whether any of them were players or landers. "Well, except that one."

Sighing, she offered a hand to help the female bandit up. "Come on, let's go." Eva motioned for Kyanna to go back too.

Kyanna's gaze followed the bandit's, pursing her lips as she once again saw the corpse of one of the victims. If it was his last life or if he was UI-Locked by now was unknown by Kyanna, but it didn't make the sight feels any less gruesome or tragic.

The girl could feel tears forming in her eyes, now that the adrenaline softened and she noticed the condition of the one bandit they saved.

Shocked, the bandit barely reacted to the duo, until Eva offered her a hand.

Kyanna, wiping her pre-tears, stood up and similarly offered a hand.

The bandit looked at both of them, with a foggy and shocked expression, barely managing to stand as she took their hands and struggled to keep her feet.

Giving some support, Kyanna made sure she wouldn't fall, casting a glance at Eva and pursing her lips as she spoke with a broken voice- "L-Let's go... Yeah..." She slipped a sigh, one that felt hard to release with the lump that was formed in her throat.

"Sorry. I am so sorry..."

She couldn't cry, she wasn't the one that lost anything.

Nearly 'dragging' the bandit, the two of them could reach the wagon eventually, with the driver finally jumping off the wagon to help the three of them up as soon as they neared it.

"Sorry. I am so sorry..."

Eva just glanced at Kyanna, not saying anything. As they reached the wagon, the driver came to help the third person up the wagon. "So, we bring them to Vintergard?" The woman nodded, before adding. "Yes, I'll pay the excess fee."

Soon, they all hopped aboard the wagon, and they were back on track to their destination. "Only one gnoll?" The veteran guard looked puzzled, as if in disbelief of what happened once both of them told him. Whatever they fought though, was definitely not an ordinary gnoll. Eva made sure to record whatever they found out, and sketched its likeness onto her notebook.

Venom, Tactical, Voice modulation, Immortal. Those are the keywords she associated with this beast that the UI called 'Bloodfang'.

Eva broke the silence of the wagon journey by asking the witch, "Why do you decide to help them, Kyanna?" Letting the other three hear her on purpose, knowing that they tried to do something funny with her a week ago when they were just a newbie.

"It was a lot of risks. And you have a more important mission."

Kyanna looked apologetically when Eva said she would pay for the excess. Even if it was for a good cause, she was the reason they went to try and rescue the other bandit.

Averting her gaze and face, Kyanna remained quiet for most of the trip, with the encounter with the gnoll making her rather pensive... This world... It was a very brutal world, something Kyanna had somewhat noticed when she had to kill her first monster back then. The blood actually leaving the creature, the realism of the impact, the pain of every damage she took...

But this Gnoll, it showed her how overwhelmingly dangerous the journey would be.

Eva's question caught Kyanna's attention, and the girl, that was already hugging her knees while sitting, curled even more.

"Who... Who would decide otherwise, knowing you die in this game for real?" Kyanna asked, averting her gaze, looking at her knees and focusing on them intently. "... N-Now I understand how my mother got stuck in this game..." Her vision blurred for a moment, making her squeeze her embrace on her own legs as she burried her face in between them.

"If... If there was someone there to save my mother whenever she died for real, I wouldn't need to be here to try to find her." The words came out muffled, and the trio, at least the ones that were remotely awake, mostly didn't look at them.

But the one woman they saved, after a heavy breath, mustered the courage to speak.

"Th-This world is deadly... Little girl." She pursed her lips, glancing at Eva, knowing she rightfully didn't have the same empathy for them. "I... Honestly should've left this game before it was too late... But I can't leave anymore." She said bitterly, lowering her gaze to the others.

"... A-And now... He won't be able to, either..."

"If... If there was someone there to save my mother whenever she died for real, I wouldn't need to be here to try to find her."

If only she could feel emotions, the white-haired woman would've said something more reassuring. Instead, she didn't know what to do and just muttered to Kyanna. "We'll find her."

"... A-And now... He won't be able to, either..."

"How about these two?"
She pointed at the other two bandit/adventurers that they saved first. "It's the same out there. One unfortunate brake failure could cost an innocent life. Better celebrate life while you can, here or there."

There was another silence after Eva finished her speech. They have passed over the forest and the road was getting less bumpy now, indicating that they are at least approaching a settlement.

"This was your second and last chance," She sighed, closing her journal book tightly and letting it hang on her waist. The woman gazed directly at the bandit, with a half-bored face while slightly glancing at Kyanna from the corner of her eyes. "Find that guy, just settle down here. Get an honest job, I'm sure many would be willing to help..."

She would at least need to show a good example to the girl who was reminded that her mother might have suffered a painful death. That the cycle of pain and sadness doesn't have to continue.

"... Including us."

Kyanna rose her head briefly from her knees, looking at the bandit that... Was now docile toward them, after the whole ordeal. Some of them were UI-Locked, and seeing one in front of her eyes brought both hope and fear into her heart. Her mother was most likely there, but she was also in the middle of that death game.

Eva's words were comforting, with Kyanna shifting her gaze to her momentarily, nodding with a saddened smile as she focused back on the bandit.

"They..? They are still safe." She said. "You gave them... Another last chance." The bandit said, scratching the back of her head.

Kyanna felt a lump in her throat, happy that they were saved, but uncertain about how to feel at the fact they went through this. "Y-You must be a bit more careful, next time..." She warned, just bringing a faint smile from the bandit.

As they finally came to a halt, along with Eva's words, the bandits carefully hopped off the cart, some a bit more exhausted than the others. The advice was expected, but the offer was surprising.

The witch looked at Eva, and her saddened smile brightened up, shining with hope as she took her hand with a gentle squeeze, both in a silent way to say 'thank you', and in a way to emphasize the 'us' in her phrase. "You don't need to keep doing this... We are here to help, if you need to."

The bandits glanced at each other, before giving their attention to the two one last time. "We won't forget what both of you had done for us." One said, while the other was already rushing ahead, far more concerned about the well being of their friend.

"Thank you, really." Another said, still weakly and having to somewhat support himself on his friend, lagging behind the hurried one.

As they left, Kyanna sighed, looking down before gazing to Eva.

"You are really amazing."

Just outside the city walls, the wagon finally stopped.

Finweald, the capital city of the player nation.

After thanking the pair, the bandits excused themselves before setting out to find their UI-locked comrade who should respawn in a temple nearby. The two still having access to their UI exchanged their contact information with Eva before departing.

"You are really amazing."

"Am I?" The white-haired woman turned to the witch, deflecting her commendation. "You would have done the same." She told her, explaining her actions.

"You said you two came just a week ago?" The caravan guard smiled, looking at Kyanna, and praised her kindness and heroism. "This world could use more people like you." The older figure gave them a piece of paper, which looked like a Lion's Pride recruitment flyer. Eva just accepted it while nodding, having no plans to commit to law and order for now.

The older woman put her hand on the girl's shoulder, before making her way into the Finweald gate. "Come on, we have a mission. Let's find the nearby tavern."

Kyanna glanced at Eva with a small smile, shrugging slightly. "I wouldn't do in the same amazing way you did, though." She chuckled, pausing for a moment before turning to the guard, having a small flush on her cheeks when they commended them, blinking surprised when offered a flyer for something called 'Lions Pride'. She tilted her head, reminding that name being spoken off a few times back in Honeyhome, generally represented by figures wearing an azure cloak.

"Thank you, sir!" She saluted, perhaps a little playfully, pausing when Eva's hand rested on her shoulder, making the girl turn to look at her.

Her lips quirked into a wide grin and a nod. "Let's do it, I can't keep my mom waiting forever." She giggled, nudging Eva, leaning away and taking a hold on her sleeve as they moved to the nearest tavern, where they hoped to find the next clue for her lost mother.
