Dark. Light. Dark. She fell aside, powerless to power down. Light. Life came back to her polyester lungs and inorganic core. She could feel magic run through her veins like a shot of espresso that she'd taken in too big of a glass. Cidney shot up onto her rear, stains of grass marring her beginner's crafting overalls that she had made. She could taste the dirt she'd eaten, albeit in metaphor alone. She had yet to truly taste ever since she'd entered this dream-held world.

"B...last fuel," Cidney Cometfall mutters, correcting her crude plastic tongue. She'd made a point to herself that she wouldn't curse inside of her own headspace-not this headspace, at least. "This is messed up."

What could she even remember? Her name was Sydney... Cidney here, a voice in the skull reminded. She was twenty...something. She'd gone traveling into the no-man's land between four great sections of the world. She had been looking for materials for... Something that she couldn't remember. A sigh escaped her burdened chest. She'd failed to find any sign of a recharging station, and now she ate dirt and memory for supper as a result. She'd probably just lost all of her play-time in one go, and needed to log right back out soon enough.

So she thought. Contrary to her belief, fresh sunbeams began to trickle past the treetops which illuminated the mountainside as clouds above parted ways. That didn't make sense at all--it had been just about noon when she'd fallen. Had she been out even longer than expected?
A check of the HUD told her that no, she had been out for less. She'd only taken four hours since her dirt nap to wake up.

The reason as to why was obvious after she stopped squinting in the sudden light. Mountainsides didn't crackle or spark. This one did. It was hard to tell where stone began and crystal ended, but this place was clear enough to her, a plain message-this rock had magic in it. The rock had a lot of magic in it.

She'd found a place to rest safely, and it had only been by accident. That was a straw that broke her current mission and gave her one anew.

She took polearm in hand and began to hack away at that which the canopy covered from the sun. Trees fell over the span of hours. More were spent working with them. It was irritating at first to scroll through the menu just to find out what shapes Cidney could shape the logs into, but she did still persist. She didn't have work tomorrow-the middle of the week was for night-shifts. She could handle to let loose a bit of dedication to the cause.

She wouldn't stop until the barest of bones lie sturdy within the mountain's earth. She made extra care not to go pushing wood into the dangerously unstable crystal, merely building a wall around the thing. A door and beds would come after. Cidney was tired of blacking out on her journeys. It had only happened twice so far and she was already sick of it. It was time to do something about this-and a good rode was paved by one lathering at a time. Time adds up when you spend it many times.

After this work was done, she sat upon the fruits of her labor. It was naught more than shaped wood. Not yet, it wasn't. Cidney roared to the sky, as if her mere progress had been a triumph. She had done most of it in free-form mode, aside from the carving itself. She felt it something to be proud of, if nothing else that had gone through her life.

Her roar echoed throughout the mountainside, through the forest that lined the way up.

Neridan... that's where she was supposed to go according to the delivery mission the League had entrusted upon Lúthien, their small numbers meaning some unusual tasks had been falling into the hands of their newer members as a result. It was supposed to be simple, go to the small town and deliver a parcel, explore around for a bit and then head back to HQ in Finweald... except that Lúthien had no idea of where she was currently at as her steps carried her through the woods.

An unexpected roar had caused birds to flutter from nearby treetops, not to mention a particular blonde jump off her skin as she yelped in surprise, before offended eyes turned into the direction the sound had come. "Was that... that wasn't a monster, right...?" It certainly hadn't sounded as primal and aggressive as a monster, not that Lúthien had an insane amount of experience with those currently, and soon enough curiosity overrode caution as the elven girl began to make her way in that direction.

From the treeline she emerged, her eyes finally able to catch sight of a vague structure composed of many felled logs pulled together into a wall of sorts, before her eyes zeroed in on the figure who she assumed was responsible for the earlier roar. "Uhm, permiso...?" Given the lack of humanoids in the area, a blessing considering Lúthien hadn't come across any enemies so far but also a curse since it had meant the blonde couldn't ask for directions, the ranger decided to take a gamble as her voice carefully carried over to the other being.

"... do you know where Neridan is?"

Human voice brought a few realizations to the forefront of Cidney's mind-most notably of all that she wasn't alone in the woods. This was more of an embarrassment than it was a relief-she had only shouted on the assumption that nobody would be around to hear a tree falling in the woods. A hand runs over her face as she calms down for the sake of the girl who'd come into the clearing.

Her palm lowered down to her side, revealing her gaze that looked down the wall. She had adopted a neutral expression for the sake of normalcy as she responds, "Neridan..? I'm unfamiliar. I don't think I can... Oh, hang on," Cidney requested. Right, she had forgotten that she had been given a map in the last town she'd passed through. It had been thanks from an amateur cartographer for making him a set of replacement tools. Thinking back on the memory, she only first recalled how enjoyable it was to finally be able to use her old hobby for a profit-she hardly remembered the map itself.

The paper crinkled open as she looked closer at it. It was just a map of Falderen, while strange past it surrounded other names such as 'Zalra' and 'Astorea'. She could only assume that this cartographer had an interest in mapping the Tangleweaves, as it was the only place with discernable features on it besides the country of civil folk that had likely already been mapped many times before. She'd also heard recently how a large expedition had dove into the forest, so it would only make sense that a few mapmakers would take interest.

The map is pulled a little way's away from her face as realization, along with a smile, dawns on her. There it... "...is! So that's it? I've found your spot. Out that-a-ways," She begins, gesturing towards where the length of the mountain range ran, "A day's or more worth of climbing. You could also go around to the end of Divinus and walk the full length down the other side-that side's where the town is. Shame, but you passed it up quite a ways' back. It's near the middle of the range, and we're near one end of it."

A notable pause took over Cydney's directions. She remembered something about that place, and the map only reinforced what she remembered.
"This place is bordering Zalra, you know. You have business out there? I heard there's some kind of fierce disease out that-a-ways. I don't know if you want to go there if you can help it, miss.

Oh thank the gods, this player had a map!

There was a delight in the blonde's eyes as she watched the Magia unfold the paper that contained some information about this region, the elf having been too hasty in leaving the League for her current delivery job to actually remember grabbing a basic one from the HQ for her personal use. "A-Ah, I s-see... fuck." Delight had turned to deception as the woman had pointed right into the range, mentioning the town was probably about a day's hike (perhaps a little bit more) away from where they currently stood.

Of course there was also the option of walking all around the range, but that would take even longer, and Lúthien gave a defeated sigh as she was made aware that she had missed her goal quite a while back... so much for reaching the town by sunset and finding a place to stay for the night.

"Yeah, I'm supposed to deliver a League's parcel over to a man living there, a Marko Bilov... whoever that is." There was a pause as Lúthien considered the next piece of information offered by the woman, her head tilted slightly in confusion. "Zalra...? What kind of disease are they having?"

Man, she should've really asked some questions back in the League before heading out...

Wracking her mind for things she didn't cat more of than a few words was hard-usually because there was nothing to remember, or because one would remember something incorrectly. It was hard for Cidney to admit that she just... didn't know, the heels of her boots kicking against the side of the wall she sat on with gentle thumps.

"You know, I couldn't tell you. Sorry, but I haven't heard much aside from how people turn into stone out there. For all I know, it might not be a disease at all-there's, what, three mythical beasts that can turn people into paperweights?" A click of the tongue. "I just don't want to go there. Guild of Leagues or what you called 'em can count me out... Oh, but the town's not there, though. It's only bordering the place. I think you're good to go."

Cidney lie onto her back on the wall, taking no heed to the wise words of Humpty Dumpty or the person who she assumed was about to go have a terrible hike of a day out that-a-way. Her work was done, and she really just wanted to sleep near this place she'd built enough to get her charge back.

"I s-see..."

Translation: she had zero clue about what mythical beasts the woman was even referring to, but not wanting to look like even more of a clueless bimbo Lúthien decided to keep that information to herself for the time being.

"Sounds like the people in that town might have a rough time once in a while... then again, maybe they're fine depending on the town's location within the mountain range?"

She'd make a mental note to ensure her path stayed as far away as possible from the direction Cidney had motioned that Zalra's border was at... but then that meant she'd have to take the one to two day mountain hike in order to reach her destination. Already the sun was setting, her UI helpfully reminding Lúthien that evening was already here... and she was pretty certain she wouldn't like traversing the mountain range in the middle of the night.

"Sooo..." There was an awkward pause as the elf considered her words, the tip of a boot tapping against the ground behind her unconsciously. "It's getting kind of late and all, would you mind if I stuck around just for the night...?"

Safety in numbers and all that...

It took a time before the question registered on the thirds-asleep woman. That was all it took for her to sit right back up on her rear atop the wall, however. A question was leveled down Luthien's way, "You sure you'd want to stick out here? I don't have much of the place done. It's just some walls and the earth in here."

She firmly patted down the wall. Cidney was sure enough that it would be safe, though comfortable was another question entirely. She questioned to herself why this Luthien wouldn't just log out for the night if it was so bad. She herself wasn't going to, but that was just because of her timezone. Cidney had a lot of time to kill out in this box...

She had yet to make a door for the place, but she did have a rope ladder in her inventory. She hoped it would be enough for the other player as she tossed the thing down both sides. A secure weight at the bottom of each side would ensure that climbing alone wouldn't cause trouble with the ladder.

Sure, as a player she could definitely log out whenever... but that also meant when she'd eventually return to play Lúthien would reappear in that same spot, though there was no way for the Elf to guarantee that her surroundings would be as safe as when she'd left them. That's where the Magia and her place, rustic as it was, came into play—with another player around, not to mention an actual structure, it meant the chances of Lúthien login in later to mayhem were abysmally low as a result.

"Sure, beats login off out god knows where in this wilderness~" A shrug of her shoulders accompanied the ranger's words, though the smile remained in her lips. "Besides, maybe I can help a bit? Though I'm not really made for heavy physical labor..."

It was the least Lúthien could do, offer a hand back to the Magia in return for a safe place to log off for the night. Besides she was curious to see how the woman planned to transform this place, and she still had a few hours in her before the blonde felt compelled to log out for the night.

"Sorry, sweetheart, but working hours are past. If you want to help out the work, I'll be more than happy to keep you aboard for tomorrow for a few hours. We keep work out into the dark for safety reasons." The answer had come reflexively, as if she were answering a question to one of her actual workers. Frankly, she might have been, depending on how Luthien felt about that thought.

"-You're still free to stay, though. I've got a few hours to kill before I need to log off for the day, so I could use some company."

The ladder took them inside of the walls. They were neat and built, albeit the structure had yet to be covered with the inside's walling. The roof was naught but the treetops that covered a canopy for now, and the only scenery was the glowing stone that made up the entirety of the mountainside's wall. Such a majestic home of natural power it was...

Taking a seat on the mountain ground, Cidney took a time to stretch and relax herself. She'd been working all day, and it showed in her virtual body that had yet to get used to such work. As a Magia, she didn't really feel the pleasant ache of exhaustion as much as she would have in real life, but the way that she heard her joints creak was more than enough to show that she had put in good work for the day.

She let Luthien adjust herself to the empty home for a time. The elven woman would probably think of a way to kill the time before Cidney, anyway.

"Oh... yeah, that'd be fine! I can spare a little while longer tomorrow before heading off to help out." After all the League had never said this delivery was actually urgent, and given Lúthien's own blunder Mr. Birlov would be forced to wait regardless... another day or two wouldn't make much of a difference. "Sure! I also have a few hours to kick before it's time for sleep~"

She followed the Magia up the ladder, looking around at the work she had already managed with a look of awe and surprise on the elf's face. "You've done all of this yourself...?" It was pretty well thought out and constructed, as far as Lúthien could tell at least, and the blonde was quite impressed... the ranger was sure she wouldn't be able to pull off something like this on her own.

"Ah right, should probably start by introducing myself huh? I go by Lúthien in this game, thanks for having me in your home~"

A bright smile was offered to the white haired woman as the elf made herself comfortable.

A nod affirmed her questions both. She offered a handshake at the introduction, not taking no for an answer.

"Working name's Cometfall. Spit and sweat, sunshine, that's all it takes to build up a few walls. This is just the support, though, and the outer side of the wall. Also helps that I've got experience in the field... and a trait for looking at it from the UI, to boot." Cidney ran a hand through pepper-wave hair, hoping that she had sounded humble enough about it. She also felt like she could have afforded to brag more about it. The former won out, it seemed.

"Found this brick here," She explains, tapping the crystal in the mountainside that towered over the walls, "And thought I'd make a home around it. I'm sick and tired of walking out here for material gathering just to power off on my way back. Going to make this place into a tower of power, you catch my drift?" Perhaps it would grow more noticeable as she spoke that she was Magia. There were only little signs, like how the color in her mouth looked just barely metallic or how her neck was missing the colorful veins of an artery.

The handshake was well received as the elf returned it, nodding in response as she filed the name Commetfall inside her mind... hopefully she wouldn't forget it, Lúthien had always been terrible at names.

"I see... that's pretty cool. Not gonna lie, if I tried doing any of this I doubt it'd be anywhere as stable or neat as what you've done so far—so don't sell yourself short, this is all really impressive."

For a moment the elf seemed confused as to why this particular crystal was of importance, before the woman's words shed light on the matter as Lúthien finally connected the dots. "Right, that's actually pretty convenient. Randomly powering off while out and about is probably inconvenient... not to mention pretty unsafe?" The way Magia worked was quite interesting, although the ranger couldn't say she had too much experience with them... Luthien was still on the fence if Jefferbee even counted as one, or something else entirely.

Lemon Day my ass...

She kept her proud smile to herself. A job was just a job, and while she was proud of it too it was far too late in the evening to care any more.

"About as unsafe as you'd imagine," She responds with remembrance and a shudder, "Woke up once with something nasty in my face. That had gotten violent real quick. I still feel... unsafe from that." It was a way to phrase that, one that was an understatement. Worries about something sinking teeth into you while you slept became a lot more real after almost happening.

If she felt anything else poke at her in the night, somebody would be getting a polearm run through them.

She almost swore underneath her breath at the thoughts passing through. Almost. She wasn't about to drop that promise to herself anytime soon, so it was time to do something else instead of thinking about it. Cidney got to working on removing helpful implements from her inventory. A few small boxes with dinners inside of them for one, and a large, soft quilt to lie on and rest for another. Cidney partook in the first as she lie on the second, offering both up to share with the other girl in the building.

"Oh, that... yeah, that doesn't sound fun or pleasant at all." She couldn't imagine suddenly passing out in the middle of the wilderness, only to wake up with a beast about to formally send her to meet whatever deities this game possessed. "I'm glad you woke up in time to defend yourself, though."

Soon enough the Magia materialized a comfy quilt and a few small boxes with dinner in them, her attempt perhaps to change the conversation, and Lúthien quickly followed the lead as she joined the woman on the much comfier option. "I have something that will go well with these, I think..." Her attention turned for a moment to her own UI inventory, two honey cakes materializing before the elf offered one to Cidney.

"Can't have dinner without dessert, after all~"

Granted, she wasn't entirely sure if her new friend would be able to appreciate the flavors of the Honeyhome treat... but at the very least she hoped the texture was interesting enough?

Surprisingly, 'Cometfall' seemed to be pleasantly surprised by the thought. She gave words of gratitude to @Luthien as she took the cake, happy to have something to go with the food. It was cake, it looked fresh and fresh cake was warm. She had no taste, but could still feel warm food just as acutely, and she had missed the feeling.

This pleasant look was replaced by one of surprise, disappointment and betrayal towards the simple hexagon cake. Why had she expected a pastry in the middle of nowhere to still be warm. How cruel.

At least her cooking wasn't tasteless without a tongue. Luthien's face was a giveaway to that much. She idly noted that she had made the little lunchboxes on her way out when the subject came up, and the two had quite a lot before and beyond to speak about. Terrasphere was a big world. Everyone always seemed to have something new to talk about.

When Cidney's 'exhaustion' reached far enough into her bones, she decided to cut whatever she was talking about short to just... lie down upon the quilt and stay there. Maybe that lass would get the hint and find some shut-eye, too, because by the time of morning's arrival Cidney knew that she wouldn't let the prospect of free work pass by.

Cidney lie there, watching the stars that sometimes could be seen through the leaves of the mountain tree's canopy above. Maybe soon sleep would come for her.

The dinner was nice, and Lúthien had been surprised by the flavors in the lunch box that the Magia had offered her. The time had been spent in simple talk as they got to know one another better, sharing thoughts about the game and their own experiences, and before the blonde had realized it a considerable amount of time had passed.

"The skies here are all so pretty..."

She had been surprised by the night view the world offered them, so vastly different from anything Lúthien had experienced before in the real world. Their conversation had died down, the two players just quietly lying down on the quilt as they waited for sleep to eventually overcome them.

Tomorrow would be a busy day, the elf could feel it already, but even then she couldn't help but feel a bit excited about what was to come. She only hoped Cometfall found a way to retain this view... it really would be a shame to lose it.

It seems that, to the shame of Luthien, the first thing that they were working on was some kind of roof. According to Cometfall it was needed to start on that before any progress on the final structure of the walls. It was a sad notion, one that Cidney herself caught onto.

"You know, I'm not walling the sights of the night sky away. If anything, I've got a better spot I'd like to use. Past that, the roof's going to be there to watch the view better than down where we were last night. I can tell it's better-I was on that there wall all day, get me?"

She hoped that would be enough to settle the lass down. It was rough enough that they were busting their bones all day on this wall and little else. The progress was much slower than what Cidney had done, or it seemed that way at least-this was the most intensive process of the walls. Cometfall assured her that this was a progress almost twice as good as what she had been doing yesterday.

A time came where Luthien noted it was ideal to begin travel. Cidney pointed it out to her, too. Handing the elf another lunchbox for the way out, she wished Luthien well wishes and an open invitation to sleep over at the castle should she ever wish it.

She would always be welcome here.

End
