Yu wrapped the white cloth around his hands, cinching the knot at his wrists, and flexed his fingers, opening and closing his fists, confirming that he still had the range of movement he desired. "So, best of three?" Yu called over to Toko, his sparring partner of the evening who looked perhaps even more eager than he did for them to duke it out on the mat.

After all, beating the piss out of each other was what friends did, right?

Having been invited to the Adventurer's Guild specifically to train by Toko had been...strange to say the least. Primarily because that entailed actually going into the guildhall for the first time when he'd only been in the League's headquarters once before himself. One might say he got around that way. That still left the question as to why Toko actually wanted to train with him in the first place. He didn't have the martial arts mastery like she did, so it felt like she kinda just wanted a punching bag...or maybe she thought he couldn't fight after Fiora had decked him back in Providence. Either way, he was excited to trade blows with someone else after so many years.

Combat Guidelines

  • Both combatants will have 3 Life Points (LP) available per round.
  • The only action allowed is Normal Attack, but passives can be enabled on the character sheet.
  • Everyone has 3 Life Points (LP) for the sake of combat.
  • All rolls must be made in the #rolls channel.
  • To deplete your opponent's Life Points you would roll a Normal Attack.
  • The person being attacked can parry by rolling a Normal Attack. The DC equals the attacker's final amount
  • On a successful attack, deduct 1 LP.
  • On a critical success attack, or a critical fail parry, deduct 2 LP.
  • On a critical failure attack the opponent will not have to roll a parry, the attack will automatically fail.
  • On a critical success parry the attacker automatically deducts 1 LP. It is assumed your opponent read your move well enough to capitalize on the situation.
  • The first person to reduce their opponent to 0 LP is the winner of the match.

It was still a bit of a mystery how Yugam had managed to rile up Fiora to the point the blonde had felt the need to sock him right in his face on first sight, and that was before the unexpected entanglement most of them went through against a particular demon grub a couple of weeks ago. Needless to say the Lepus was a bit concerned over her new friend, and so she had reached out with a proposal to Yugam—one he actually accepted, to Toko’s surprise.

"Mhmm, best of three~" She confirmed his call, the rabbit finishing some last minute warm ups before getting ready. "And remember, no blood magic etcetera—cool as it is."

After all magic took time to cast, but at times that was a luxury one simply couldn’t afford, so the Lepus figured working on Yugam’s reflexes would be a better idea overall. She wasn’t sure about his build or skill either, so the first few seconds of this round would go into assessing the man better too. A keirei bow was given in Yugam’s direction, before Toko took a defensive stance.

"Oss! Ready when you are, Yu-chan~"

Returning Toko's bow, Yu took up a fairly standard boxer's stance, his hand up in a high guard, feet spread and knees slightly bent, bouncing slightly on the balls of his feet. The man inched slowly closer towards Toko, staying just outside of her reach as they slowly began to circle each other. Foot for foot, he matched her.

Right up until the point he launched a quick left jab, his fist rushing towards the right side of her face. Just before it could impact, only a hair's breadth from contacting flesh, Yu pulled his fist back, his front foot pivoting as he rotated into a round house kick coming from his back leg. Putting all his momentum, into the strike, his foot collided with Toko's side, the satisfying sound of flesh on flesh reverberating in the air.

She’d watched his movements with every step, the Lepus blinking in mild surprise as she realized his pose was pretty solid… not something that Toko had expected from the Hemomancer if she was honest. Yugam wasn’t rushing in either like most people new to close combat, he was being cautious instead, and for the first time since knowing him the rabbit wondered if perhaps he wasn’t as new to this form of fighting as Toko had initially thought…

WHAM!

And then he feinted her with a left jab, turning it into a roundhouse kick that collided against Toko’s side before the hare could react. "I see… so you know how to feint, huh?" There was a surprised look to her eyes before a smirk pulled the corners of the fighter’s lips, Toko shaking off any initial discomfort from the hit before turning to look at Yugam.

"Good, that means I don’t have to go through that material then~"

With that the Lepus rushed forwards, pretending her goal was a right hook to Yugam’s chin before switching her stance at the last second—the momentum instead used to land a kick right into the man’s chest instead.

A slight smirk pulled a corner of Yu's lip upwards to match Toko's, enjoying his small victory in landing the first blow of the match against an opponent who's capabilities Yu had seen first hand. Now he got to experience it. The counter attack came quickly, a blindingly fast uppercut tore through the air like a fist sized bullet. Raising his arm and twisting, Yu covered his head, except the blow never connected. Instead, the man felt Toko's foot slam into his guard with enough force to set him off-balance, stumbling backwards.

Barely keeping his footing, Yu shook his left arm, freeing it from the pins and needles sensation that had begun to creep through. "Damn, okay. Not pulling any punches, huh?" the man said with a gleeful look on his face. All the more fun for the two of them.

Raising his guard again, the dark haired man walked back into the fight. No pretenses this time. As soon as he was in range, he shot out another left jab, his right fist already chambering for follow-up.

"Kick for a kick~" The Lepus called back with a merry tone in her voice, she was definitely having fun sparring with the Hemomancer. "I promise to keep the claws in check though."

After all this was meant to be good practice for the both of them, not an actual blood bath, and Toko herself wasn’t into the whole “make your friends suffer” thing either. She’d pull back more if it looked like Yugam couldn’t handle it… but so far the human wasn’t doing a terrible job.

"Ikimass!"

Figuring she’d granted Yu enough of a breather the Lepus shot forth once more, used to taking an aggressive role when in combat as she quickly closed the distance between themselves. He was quick to try and counter Toko with a left jab, but the rabbit managed to deflect it with an open hand before she leaned out of the way of an incoming right hook.

"That’s good, but you gotta keep the pressure up Yu-chan!"

Her words were accompanied by actions, an open palm slamming against the chest guard in similar fashion to Toko’s earlier kick.

'Bunnies have claws?' was Yu's first thought. The second was 'oh shit!' as Toko flawless parried aside his blow, slamming her palm into his sternum. The blow forced Yu back, his back foot grinding into the ground stabilizing him.

And Toko let her hand linger for just a moment too long. Grasping the outstretched arm, Yu sprang forward, planting what was once his rear leg behind Toko's foreleg, pulling her into his elbow as he twisted, returning her blow with one of his own. Probably not enough to actually sweep her leg out from beneath her, if she was quick enough to recover, but another solid blow was another solid blow.

Alright, okay, cool… either Yugam was a very quick learner, or the man had some precious combat experience Toko had been entirely unaware of. They were entangled now, a war going on to see who would be the first to sweep the leg from under the other, and he’d even managed to sneak in an elbowed jab too in the process.

"Say, Yu-chan… you aren’t knew to this, are you?"

No way the Hemomancer was a newbie to these sort of spars, not when he was actually doing a good job at keeping his foot in the right place so that Toko couldn’t sweep him down to the ground. It definitely came as a surprise considering the Lepus had never seen him get physical before with opponents, but it certainly wasn’t news that Toko was about to regret any time soon.

She always did enjoy a good challenge after all…

"Nope," Yu said, as he was forced to back up from Toko, his attempt to take her down to the ground leaving him open for the same move to be used on him if he'd stayed any longer. "Did karate when I was younger," he explained, firing off a couple short quick jabs and a front kick, aiming to gauge his distance as opposed to actually landing a strike.

"Surprised?" he asked, moving in closer. Lifting his front leg, he feinted with another front kick, setting the foot down before releasing the attack fully, then leaning in for a quick jab aimed right at Toko's face. Fast, but lacking any real power it, his whole body weight lurched forward to help compensate.

"Eeeh, maji deh?!"

Her eyes almost lit up at that sudden revelation, the Lepus placing some distance between herself and Yugam once he has disengaged—a smart move for sure by the man. "That’s amazing! I studied karate too when I was little." The next flurry of blows was easy to read and tap away, the Hemomancer using them more to gauge their distance and reach than actual attacks.

He was testing the waters to see if something would stick, something Toko could applaud him for.

"Hai! I’m very surprised, never would’ve guessed before today even~"

His next feint almost worked, the rabbit only catching on at the last moment as she leaned back and to the side—just enough for Yu’s jab to miss—before striking with a jab of her own as Toko managed to poke the man in the chest with her index and middle finger.

"Watashi no kachi~"

In a rather impressive display of speed and control, Toko bobbed her head to the side, just enough for Yu's fist to slide on by. His hair grazed his skin, and before he knew it, Yu felt Toko tap his chest with two fingers.

Smiling despite the disappointed exhale, Yu let his arms fall to his sides saying, "Damn, alright. Good one." Moving towards the edge of the mat, he leaned down and picked up the canteens the pair had brought with them and tossed Toko's to her. "Next one, I'm taking the win though," he said with a smile.

Taking a deep gulp of water and wiping his mouth with the back of his hand, the man asked, "So what style did you study? You're pretty good. Been a long time since I've actually had the chance to spar anyone."

"You can certainly try~"

There was a soft chuckle before Toko caught the canteen tossed her way, the rabbit also taking a few long gulps of the water within before exhaling happily. "Water always hits different after a workout, ne?" She allowed herself to plop down on the mat, feeling like a nice and small break was in order—after all that first match had lasted longer than Toko had originally expected, though the Lepus now felt she had a better grasp on Yugam’s abilities.

"My senseeh focused on the goojuu-ryuu style, although he also knew wadoo-ryuu. In the end he taught me both, figuring they were pretty complementing styles."

She had been too small back then to make a pick of style anyways, and if Nao was honest she felt both styles definitely suited her preference in combat… then again that could’ve also just been a result of learning them.

"What about you, Yu-chan?"

Taking a seat down besides the bunny, Yu crossed his legs beneath him, leaning back slightly and propping himself up on one arm. "Okinawan-kenpo," the man answered, "among other things. Judo. Some kendo. Did it pretty much since I could walk up until high school." The man paused just long enough to take another swig of water. "Probably the only 'sport' I was ever any good at," he said with a chuckle. He'd loved it back then. The only method he had for relieving stress. Working out problems. Or at least taking his mind off them for a time.

"How long did you study? Or are you still practicing?" he then asked curiously. The woman definitely knew how to move, that was for sure. He was lucky his body still remembered as much as it did, fighting her. Any sloppier and he probably would've been knocked on his ass right out of the gate.

"Eeh, Okinawan kenpo…?" That was quite the interesting variation that Yugam had practice, but what caught Toko’s attention the most was the name of her prefecture. "Yu-chan… have you ever been to Okinawa Island, perhaps?"

Nah, probably not… after all, what would be the odds of that? The world was insanely big after all, and as far as Toko was aware she was pretty sure Yugam wasn’t from Japan like she was… and yet the Lepus couldn’t help but ask regardless.

"Ah, I practiced until a few months after my high school graduation…" They had certainly been very memorable times, and if Nao was ever asked about who she viewed as a fatherly figure it would’ve no doubt been her sensei. "Unfortunately senseeh passed away shortly after that."

It was the first loss that Nao had come to face, the first time she was reminded that many of the people she loved back in Ōgimi, including her grandmother, were on borrowed time.

"I didn’t practice for a few years after that, couldn’t help but feel sad whenever I tried to go through the motions and he wasn’t there to correct me." She sighed at the memory, taking another gulp from her canteen as she leaned back in one arm similarly to Yu. "Obaachan was the one that eventually convinced me to practice again a couple of years ago… and I guess muscle memory never fully faded away, not after all the times I got my ass kicked across the mat by him~"

Yu shook his head at the question. "I've never had the pleasure. I'd love to one day though, its on my bucket list." He'd always wanted to visit Japan, but had never really had the time or money. School, work, school, work. The man hardly took time for himself, except for the hours he played Terrasphere, which was a struggle in and of itself. "You're from Japan, right?" the man asked, figuring the accent and mixed Japanese usage were pretty good indicators.

"Oh, I'm sorry to hear that," Yu said, offering his condolences. "It's good that you're getting back into it though. I'm sure that makes your sensei happy. Plus, I bet they'd be glad to see you haven't gotten rusty. You got one hell of a front kick," the man said, rubbing his arm, still tender from being sacrificed to the Bunny Goddess.

There was a faint feeling of disappointment as Yugam confirmed what Toko had figured, he was nowhere near Japan... just like all of her online friends. "Ah, h-hai, from Oogimi village in Okinawa Island actually." Maybe one day she'd get a plane ticket and visit them in the states... figure out which one would be the most central point between all of her friends to actually physically meet them and hang out.

"Hey you're pretty good too... especially since it sounds like you hadn't kept up with it much after high school right?" She was flattered by the praised from the raven haired boy, but Toko was nothing if not honest. "Your feints are really good, you should teach Brutus one day more about them."

Lord knew the Felis was too blatantly obvious for those when they brawled...

"I'm surprise though, never seen you get physical in a fight despite you clearly knowing how to fight in close quarters... Martial Arts wasn't a mastery that caught your attention?"

Ah, so not only was Yu correct that Toko was from Japan, but she even lived on the island of Okinawa. "Well, I guess I got no reason not to come visit you then, huh?" he said with a soft smile. What a better way to check something off his bucket list? Going to visit his friend, who was also a native and could show him around to all the cool local spots? And the good local food, not that tourist trap garbage. Man...this might have to happen sooner rather than later...

Yu laughed at the idea of teaching Brutus feints. "I'm not really sure that's his style," the man said, still chuckling. Trying to imagine the guy using anything but his sheer strength in a head on fight was...comical to say the least. Honestly, Yu doubted that the man would ever need them. He could just pummel his way through obstacles anyways.

"Eh, I thought about it," Yu then answered Toko. "But, I figured, cool magic, guns, and swords? If I get to the point where I'm relying on hand to hand, I've probably fucked up pretty bad at that point," he explained with a laugh. "I'm thinking about picking it up a little later though, just to have that ace up my sleeve, ya know? Anyways, what about you, I know you have MA, and...astramancy? Is that the one? What else you got?"

"Hah, I'll believe it when I see it. Jokes aside though, don't feel like you have to come here... there's other parts in Japan that are probably more interesting than Oogimi."

Not many enjoyed the slow rural life after all, though it wasn't something that Toko could blame others for not appreciating... maybe if she hadn't grown here with her grandmother and neighbors Nao too would've found the village dull and boring.

"Where do you live, Yu-chan? I'm guessing Amerika, but are you close to Texas or somewhere else?"

She couldn't help but chuckle along as Yugam shared his thoughts of Brutus and feints in the same sentence, he wasn't wrong after all. "To his credit he did try them... he's just too obvious about what he's about to do for them to work." Not that Toko thought he'd ever need them, the man could hit like an isekai truck even with those new knuckle dusters of his... once he had his new cannon he'd be nearly unstoppable.

"That's fair, can't fault you for that logic." She nodded in return when Yu listed the masteries he knew Toko possessed. "Mhmm, there's Nature magic too—it was quite useful for spooking you with it back on the sheep quest~" A mischievous grin was given as Toko raised the third finger in her hand, listing her skills off. "Then there's also Geomancy, an finally Battle Spirits... though I'm terribly new at that last one still."

A pause was given before she continued.

"What about you, though? I know you're a Hemomancer... but I'm not sure I know much aside from that."

"Nah, we'll make it a road trip," Yu said taking another drink of water. "Boat trip? Whatever. Either way, I could really use some peace and quiet." Fat chance of that happening though. Voices in your head didn't really shut up when you wanted them to.

"God, do I sound like a hick to you?" Yu asked with a chuckle. "I'm from Pennsylvania," he answered. Not that there was much to say about where he lived. Big city with a whole lotta nothing to do.

"Wait, the vines and shit were you?" Yu asked with a look of both shock and betrayal on his face. "Oh, I'm getting back at you now when we get back to sparring," the man said devilishly (plot twist: the roller hates me so Toko's probably gonna mop the floor with him). "Battle spirits, though? Are those like...I dunno, JoJo stands?" Yu asked, trying to figure out just what a 'battle spirit' might entail.

"Eh, like I said, swords and guns and shit. So slashing and ranged weaponry. That's it actually. Figured I should get my shit together before I start trying to branch out."

"Oh if you want peace and quiet then Oogimi is definitely the place for you."

The village was certainly a very quiet place, time certainly moved different there than anywhere else—not to mention that it's night skies were also astounding, a real treat for anyone's eyes. A chuckle escaped the Lepus to Yu's reaction about perhaps being nearby Texas, before it broke into a full laugh as Toko watched the look of realization come over the human's face as to the source of his laments back in the weird forest.

"Ahahahaaa, gomen Yu-chan gomen!" Was she sorry though? No, not really, it had been too good of an opportunity to pass up back then. "I just couldn't resist the temptation."

She listened as he explained his picks in masteries so far, before an index finger tapped the bottom of her lip as Toko considered a way to explain her latest alter mastery.

"Mmm, kinda? I'm not super sure myself yet, only time I've actually managed to activate it was during that Kurungaar fight... and I almost went unconscious since I kept leaking out a lot of magic, I don't have the best control when it comes to that yet."
