CYCLE 1
It's-a-me! It's-a-Myconid!

《⋯《 ⋯ ❖ ⋯ 》⋯》

205 / 240
-35 from Mushroom Revenge

The job was simple: Take out the evil mushrooms and bring back some of them, corpses or twitching, so the scientists can do their thing or whatever. Chrys had heard about the mushroom activity from the Lions, having been somewhat acquainted with them on a lesser level. Emphasis on the lesser, as none of them probably remembered who he was, even though he helped that one guy with that sheep thing. He was quick to round up his usual crew, more or less, and the rest was history. Or they would be if they screw this up and get murdered by walking [fungi]. That wouldn't be fun, guy.

❰ Thousand Sparkling Gold: Demolishing Splinter ❱

As soon as Chrys' floating gems threw themselves at the Mushroom Caval, exploding as dust and dirt in its eyes, he quickly gestured for the rest of the crew to move back while covering his mouth with the nook (or is it the cranny?) of his elbow. While he was all right with making the creature eat his shit, he wasn't down with the idea of doing the same. His was figurative, but he wasn't sure if the Caval was more interested in the literal. Chrys was no botanist. He was just in this for the money.

"Blech!"

"Move back! Don't inhale the spores!"

Ayna knew better. But Ayna also knew they needed this. The last time they tried to work together, as a trio, was during the Red Fever, where they ended up losing @Kamala Graham. Ayna had taken that loss deeply. That was, until Kamala returned to them, seemingly unchanged. Ayna, after all, was not known to be the most aware in their friend group. She was debatably the most oblivious.

"Stay behind us, Kamala! We need you to make sure we don't fall!"

It wasn't a complete lie per se. Kamala was their resident healer. It was her job to keep them, especially her, alive and well. It was also a good way for them to keep her alive as well. The farther Kamala was from the creature, the safer they could make her, the fewer chances she'll get of dying again. Ayna didn't want a second round of all that stuff. Not for her or her friends.

❰ Supreme Body: Aspiration ❱

Ayna felt the lightning course through her veins as she became one with her magic and its element of choice. Without missing a beat, she charged at the Caval's weak point with Calamity's Light, stabbing it with all the speed and lightning she could muster, amplifying her attack with her momentum. Despite her speed, however, the creature still managed to harm her, wildly swinging and unexpectedly making contact with the Lightning of Lyrwick. It didn't help that she found herself vulnerable after making contact with its aforementioned weak point. Tch.

❰ Ghost Scourge of Evil Destruction ❱

Before she could do or say anything else, however, she heard @Chrys mention something about inhaling spores. Ayna didn't like listening to that man but she didn't like having spores inside her more. Jumping back, she used her speed and agility to build distance between her and the Caval. So far, so good. She tried to be as positive as she could, but she knew if she did the same move again, the next time could be her last.

"Kamala! I need healing!"

Kamala was less than thrilled when she heard Ayna telling her to stay back. Sure, she died during her brief stint with the Explorers League in her first expedition, but that doesn't mean they had to baby her, right? Regardless, she knew it wasn't the time or place to argue, so instead, she just took a deep, calming breath and focused on the task at hand: Keeping everyone alive. Let's see if I don't botch this, too.

"I got you both!"

❰ Viridian Labyrinth ❱

Kamala took another deep breath as she made a makeshift oval with her arms, her elbows slightly bent, and her fingers curved just below the navel. Closing her eyes, she imagined herself sprouting wings while holding a watermelon in front of her belly button. I know, I know, I know... It's weird, but it's my whole thing now. When she opened her eyes, light and delicate green light flowed through her and towards her other companions, specifically the man with the rocks and the purple-haired Beastfolk with all the lightning crackling around her. All three of them would feel a soothing relief from within, as their wounds and fatigue were washed away by Kamala's nature magic.

Unfortunately for Kamala, the Caval saw her and took a swipe at her, hitting her in the shoulder as a school bully would. Fortunately for Kamala, her better understanding of her own healing has made her somewhat of a better survivor. The Seed of the Sapling Sprites has not only greatly empowered her supportive abilities, boosting them to levels she had then only imagined, but also now granted her the ability to heal herself without much effort. Death changes people, apparently.

Chrys simply nodded at @Kamala Graham's assistance. He wasn't as, well, in need of healing as @Ayna Nietzsche was, but he appreciated the effort nonetheless. In the thick of combat, everything counts. One wrong move could secure your defeat, as he will himself find out in a bit. Ooh, foreshadowing!

❰ Thousand Sparkling Gold: Demolishing Splinter ❱

Chrys sent his Thousand Sparkling Gold crashing at the Mushroom Caval once again, the floating gems exploding into more dust and dirt in its eyes. Unfortunately for him, for all of them, really, the creature was getting used to his tactics and walloped him away with a hard punch right in his abs before intentionally dispersing its Spore Cloud at the rest of their party. No! Chrys' eyes widened in horror as he was sent flying away, the pain of the creature's attack second only to the fear of losing one or even two of his friends. Again.

❰ Excellent Jade Outshining Eclipses ❱

In a last ditch effort to protect the girls, Chrys sent his floating gems toward them to protect them, though they only managed to reach Ayna. Kamala was at least farther from the creature's range, so he hoped she wouldn't get affected as much. Chrys never liked the idea of taking the father role, as his own was a terrible man, or the brother role, as he didn't have one, but at this point in time, as his life flashed before his eyes, he just wanted to make sure the babies he was sitting wouldn't die on his watch. Not again.

Unbeknownst to Chrys and his penchant for the melodramatic, he did not in fact screw that up. The Caval merely pushed him away, off of it, and the Spore Cloud was only the result of Chrys' floating gems striking it in its sensitive tummy. All in all, he had nothing to fear, as he was able to use his great strength and stuff to keep the Caval away from the rest of the party. Whew. The fancy border is too cool, though, so we're keeping it.

Watching @Chrys get smacked by the Caval, Kamala instinctively decided to heal him. However, when she noticed he was focusing more on protecting @Ayna Nietzsche, she realized she may have to change her mind. After all, he did look like he wasn't worse for wear. Unlike Ayna who definitely looked like she needed all the help she could get. Typical of a pure damage dealer, of course!

Besides, Chrys was able to land all his attacks on the Caval's face. Or at least that's where she thought the creature's face was. It was hard to tell from all the weird poisonous fog it was dispersing. Fortunately, Kamala was nowhere near whatever that was. Both her allies were adamant she be far from the creature, and that was probably the reason why.

"Ayna! Give it your all!"

❰ Viridian Labyrinth ❱

Taking a deep breath, Kamala went into her usual position, making her trademark oval with her arms, with elbows slightly bent and fingers curved just below her navel. Closing her eyes, she imagined herself sprouting the wings of a fairy while holding a delicious watermelon in front of her belly button. Kamala likes her watermelon. As soon as she opened her eyes, the same light and delicate green light from before flowed through her and towards Ayna, refreshing her and taking care of every wound and bruise she might have. It was the same soothing relief that Kamala felt herself, thanks to her own regenerative ability.

Ayna didn't pay much attention to what was going on with @Chrys, as she was trying to focus on her own survival and tactics, only realizing he was trying to protect her when his floating gems began surrounding her body. In her head, she gave him a shrug, believing that she did not need it, even though she needed all the help she could get. Ayna was debatably the strongest of the three when it came to power and damage but she was also the weakest in defense. She was a cannon but she was also one made of glass. A fair trade, isn't it?

She turned to @Kamala Graham when she healed her again, inspiring her to do her best to finally end the Caval. It was up to her, as it should be. With a nod, she flashed the other Beastfolk a confident grin, believing the end was night. It should be. They were working as a well-oiled machine, finally the party that she had long yearned for.

"Ya got it, babe!"

❰ Supreme Body: Aspiration ❱

Allowing her own lightning magic to course through her veins, becoming one with her, she launched herself at the Caval's weak point with Calamity's Light once more. With her momentum, her attack was bolstered, lightning crackling all over her. Ayna screamed as she made contact, and the Caval staggered back, still managing to hit her as it wildly flailed with its massive arm. Careful, Ayna was not known to be. The creature let out a cloud of spores as it began to wilt and die, but Ayna was at least known for something else...

❰ Ghost Scourge of Evil Destruction ❱

...gotta go fast! Ayna disappeared in a flash of lightning, launching herself backward to avoid the creature's poisonous cloud. With another flash of lightning, she reappeared at a safer distance, body closer to the ground, mimicking the usual stance of a spider-heroine but with a lightning-charged spear and less spandex. With a playful grin, she watched the final moments of the Caval, proud of their work, especially hers. She turned to Chrys and then Kamala, giving them each a final nod of approval.

"Great work, gang! Bounty taken out!"

Relieved.

Chrys heaved a sigh of relief when he realized that they had easily taken down the Mushroom Caval, with @Ayna Nietzsche dealing the final as well as most of the critical blows and @Kamala Graham still alive and well after providing all the healing that they required. Well, most of it. Chrys couldn't help that this was all a bit easier because they weren't fighting something that required their full potential. It's all right. It's a great first team-up since, well, ever.

During that ill-advised expedition, their goal was to work together as a team, as a family, with the rest of their friend group, which also included Leyna, Elias Stryker, and Samantha Yurei. Unfortunately, those three couldn't make it in time, and so only himself, Kamala, and Ayna were able to join. The plan was to take on the entire thing together, but in the end, they all decided to go their separate ways, to try out the separate factions for themselves. Only Ayna and Chrys returned, with Kamala becoming one of the Explorers' dead. Until her return, distance grew among the rest.

Basking in Ayna's smile of victory, Chrys felt himself warming up from within, as if all the ice around him thawed out in the presence of his friends. He looked towards the sky as he wiped the sweat off his brow, a comely smile finding its way around his face. Turning to them again, he began to move towards the remains of the creatures, intending to finish their bounty as a collective, a family.

"Now comes the hard part: Bringing it home."

Lest they forget, the MIT wanted these creatures, dead or alive. The Lions might have noticed the activity first and the Guild the ones to post the bounty, but at the end of the day, the MIT were to receive these things after they bring them back. Chrys' entire plan was to carry their quarry on his own shoulders, but maybe the girls could assist him with their magic? Ayna's aeromancy could very well come in handy at this point in time. Still, he began grabbing its legs like a macho man (read as: an idiot).

Pooped.

As soon as she saw the Caval go down, Kamala immediately rushed towards @Ayna Nietzsche to give her a tight hug, squealing as her legs tried their best to get her from point A to point B. To say that she was very happy that their threesome managed to succeed would be an understatement. Kamala was ecstatic that they were working together like a very good party. If they had done this in the first place, maybe she wouldn't have died. Maybe.

"Oh, right!"

She had almost forgotten that they had to bring back the creature's remains. Kamala let Ayna go and shifted her attention to the lifeless body within their vicinity and then to @Chrys. Is he trying to drag it on his own? She wasn't quite sure that would work, but then a light bulb appeared on top of her head. Figuratively, of course.

"Here, let me help you, Chrys!"

Kamala formed a circle with her arms, as if she was holding an invisible but massive watermelon between them and her chest, as the Seed of Serenity (Accessory) around her neck danced with the sudden breeze that came out of nowhere. Delicate green wisps of magic soon surrounded Chrys, and he would feel a soothing and calming energy wrap around him. Like some sort of minty fresh vapor, the same feeling one gets from chewing mint gum. With that inspiring magic, Chrys would find himself and his muscles and bones buffed to the point of being able to carry or drag their quarry with relative ease. Or at least she hoped that would be the case.

My brain is soup.

And just like that, it was all over. Was their bounty easy? Probably. Should they have tracked down a stronger quarry? Definitely. But was it worth it? There was no doubt about that. Staring at @Chrys and @Kamala Graham, even as she lunged at her with that hug, Ayna realized there was nowhere else she'd rather be, no one else she'd rather be with. This was her party, her team, her crew, and maybe even her family. Don't get sappy on me, girl.

"Right."

Memories of her past encounter with the MIT during the events of the Red Fever, when they all thought Kamala was lost, came flooding back into her mind. Ayna thought the world of the brilliant minds within that faction, but she found herself somewhat out of place. She was a genius in the real world, one of the more infamous brains in her home nation of Singapore, but she couldn't find the same version of her in this one. Maybe it's for the best. After all, Xu Huifang is a workaholic who puts everything else in last place. Ayna Nietzsche, on the other hand, is free.

"Well then, if you're both ready: Let's get the hell out of here, lady and gentleman."

With a bright smile, Ayna began channeling her lightning magic to surge through her and the others, including the remains of the creature. If Kamala's thing was to buff Chrys to the point of being able to carry the damned thing on his own without much effort, Ayna's thing was to hasten everyone, so that speed could alleviate some of that heaviness in terms of weight. Teamwork makes the dream work. Or in this case, carrying our bounty quick and easy.

This is the end. Hopefully.

With a nod to both @Ayna Nietzsche and @Kamala Graham, Chrys thanked them for their assistance without parting with any word. He was set on the task at hand, which was to bring back the Caval to the Guild, to the MIT, and finally get paid. It wasn't an easy task, taking on such a magnificent creature, but it wasn't that hard either. It was just the perfect starting point for their renewed chemistry. Team ACK!!! or maybe something much better.

Buffed and hastened, Chrys started to make his way out of there with the girls and their quarry. They were stronger, faster, and better than the last time they had fought together, and he felt refreshed at the thought, renewed at the idea that they had progressed in the game, separately and together. It gave him hope that maybe this wasn't such a bad step for him, that maybe playing the game was something he needed to do to better himself. Chrys had not died yet, so he had the luxury of that thinking. The future may still hold some terrible changes, though he hoped it would be otherwise.
