Having made his way into Honeyhome after starting Terrasphere, Emerath wanted to figure out a good way to make money. He wanted to learn how to make the music system work, and it looked like the game had a friendly auto assist system. So with the little bit of change that Emerath had managed to scrounge up, he bought a basic starter lute from the shop, thankful that they at least had that. It had appeared to be mostly weapons and armors, but he had found the lute leaned up against a barrel, covered in dust. As old as it probably was, it was no wonder the shopkeep had given it to him for basically a pittance, almost free.

With lute in hand, Emerath stood in the center of the village, threw a hat on the ground, and did what he had seen so many people do in real life in populated areas. He turned on the game's music playing auto assist, and started to play. The sweet music carried itself throughout the town, and if nothing else Emerath was thankful that none of the people in the town complained. In fact, a couple of them would come by and tap their foot to the song he played, before wandering off to complete their daily chores. It would certainly be easy for Emerath to lose himself in playing like this, and he hoped that once the game played enough auto assist for him, he would learn to play the notes and chords himself. Though that would take a bit more doing, and should probably be done out in the forest, in private. For now, he just wanted to earn a little extra cash, and hoped that maybe with any other new players wandering around in the area, that maybe he could do just that.

"Thanks for all your help." The elderly woman said as she handed over a pouch of coins.

It had only been a few weeks since Creature had started playing, but he had felt like he was finally getting the hang of things. Why he had even managed to obtain silver rank in the adventurer's guild in such a short span of time. As such he was able to take on requests that brought him to various kingdoms.

Honeyhome was a place he hadn't stayed in for too long, but not much changed since the last time the man was here. Today's request was fairly simple. There wasn't much excitement in helping an old lady with her gardening, but it was a good deed and quick way of making some gold so he didn't complain. Every bit helps when it comes to wanting to upgrade his armor.

Before leaving town Creature would do some window shopping in town. But when he went to pat his new coin pouch, it felt noticeably… Airy. It was gone. His eyes darted among the people around and a grunt escaped his lips as Hyper Sense took effect. Soon, his now red eyes would settle on that of a child who was currently dumping all their ill-gotten gains into the hat of a nearby performer.

Seeing him approach, the child would take off. Now he was at a crossroads. Before him was this stranger and between them his coins. He had worked the better part of the day for that coin and yet he hadn't known how long this man had been here, waiting for an opportunity to be rewarded for his effort. While he helped a single person, his playing might have helped many more.

"…You're quite good." Creature said while his eyes shifted back to normal.

Emerath was tapping his foot to the sounds coming from the lute, wondering if maybe he should start singing. Though, as he thought about it, he figured that maybe he shouldn't try to subject the world to that. There was probably no auto assist that could make him sound better if he found himself singing completely off key, ruining the sound of the music. Another thing to try in the forest alone, later, perhaps.

One song finished, and another started as he watched a young child run up and dump a bag of coins into his hat on the ground. What a strange thing. On one hand, Emerath was happy to have made some money, but that was not a small amount of change for a child to have, nor to give a simple busker playing music. Sure enough, there was a man walking towards him as the child ran off as quickly as he came. A game, perhaps? Seemed possible, but still odd.

The man didn't come up and ask for the money though, so Emerath was rather unsure that it was his. Perhaps just a coincidence? So many odd things happening in such a short span of time. The auto assist continued to move his fingers along the lute strings as he played, and he smiled at the man's compliment.

"Ah, thank you. Honestly, this is just..."

But then Emerath remembered that NPCs were crazy intelligent in this game, and telling them about game features just made them confused. Unsure if the man was an NPC involved in a quest with that boy or another player, he figured it best to choose his words wisely.

"I'm still learning, so honestly that sort of compliment really does mean a lot, thank you."

"No problem. Besides, it seems I'm not the only one who thinks so." He'd say, referring to the coin filled hat.

Any anger he felt toward the pickpocket had subsided. Rather than dwell on it he figured it might be nice to sit and talk for a bit. Plopping down into a cross legged position he'd size up the man before him.

"I am called Creature. Are you a new player too?" It was a casual question as it was common knowledge Honeyhome was the first place a lot of people stumbled into after starting the game. Most moved on pretty quickly though.

"Anyway, I'm part of the Adventurer's Guild, and word on the street is that the Explorer's League is gearing up for a big mission soon. I was doing some jobs to get a little extra cash before then, but I kinda got robbed…" He'd fidget for a moment.

Still unsure of what to say next, the man paused. In the back of his mind the conversation with Triss echoed. Death was a real possibility in this world. Perhaps the musician had heard the news somehow and was also making preparations to join. If that was the case his gold could make a difference between someone else being able to survive out there. Was it right to take it back then?

"What's your name?"

Bright Kat
Honeyhome

Kat sat behind a nearby house, cloaked in shadows. She had used shadow arts to make herself harder to spot in the shadow of the house, and had been watching the busker for a while now. She had honestly been waiting at Honeyhome for Ryou to show up, but when she didn't Kat got bored and started watching this busker who had been standing there all day playing music. The man was okay, clearly still learning, but what had been interesting was the money hat he had in front of him. Occasionally, you'd get someone throwing a coin or two in, whether out of politeness or actually enjoying the music didn't matter.

But then some kid came by and dumped a whole bag of money into the hat. And that was when Kat knew she had to get that money. It was probably stolen anyway, given the way the kid acted. So what would be the issue of her stealing it again? She wasn't even sure why the kid did it. Maybe the kid expected someone else to grab it for him. If that was the case, Kat had to get it first!

She watched and waited for just the right moment as the sun moved across the sky, until the busker's shadow covered the hat on the ground, and that was the moment where she struck. She cast another shadow art, using the man's shadow to sink the hat full of money into the ground, and then it popped out in the shadow of the house next to her.

With a giggle of delight that she couldn't help, she grabbed the hat full of money and threw it into a bag of her own, before activating her dynamism and dashing off towards the nearby forest.

Emerath smiled at the man who decided to sit and enjoy his show. He had introduced himself, and he seemed to be another player, and Emerath was delighted that he seemed to be a rather polite one at that. Sure enough, though, he had mentioned being robbed. Emerath was not about to keep this man's money from him, they were all trying to make their way in the world. The only sad part was that Emerath was unsure what money had been stolen from the man, and what had been given to him during the course of busking. Emerath knew he hadn't made a lot, but he did make some money, and he'd hate to lose that.

"Well, I'll start off with an introduction. My name is Emerath, and it is a pleasure to meet another player. I'm not affiliated with any guilds yet and haven't actually heard about the preparations being made. I just logged in to start playing music and see how it worked!

Emerath was about to offer the man his money back, perhaps asking him how much he had lost or had before, even knowing that this could still result in Emerath losing all his money when suddenly the hat and the money both sank into the ground like it had just fallen into a pool of water. Emerath stared at the ground dumbfounded before he heard a light giggle off nearby. Did the kid who dumped the money have an accomplice?

"I was going to ask if you wanted your money back, but I suppose now we have to get it back first. Did you happen to see where it went? Or know where that giggle came from?"

Emerath slung his lute onto his back, and offered to help Creature up, should he wish it, so that they could chase after the thief.

Creature was at a loss as he rose to his feet with Emerath's help. One minute they were having a nice conversation and the next the hat full of money had disappeared. Shadows had consumed it; an act that should have been outside the realm of possibility.

"I only saw it sink into the ground! As for a giggle…"

He trailed off while bringing a hand to his chin in thought.

"Gods, there sure have been some strange folks around here ever since the Travelers returned."

A woman lamented to her friend as the pair were passing by the two men.

"They're the worst! Why, that girl almost ran me over just now! Saw my whole life flash before my eyes, I did!"

"Wonder what had her in such a hurry toward the woods?"

Though he had no proof, it wasn't like there was much else to go off. All he knew was that thievery could not be forgiven. Not when it was his hard earned gold getting pinched! Creature began to head in the direction the women had come from.

"Speedster chick sounds worth checking out to me. You coming?"

Kat seriously hadn't meant to run into the two women that were walking through town. She had managed to narrowly avoid them at the speed of Dynamism that she was running at, only thanks to her doing a quick shadow step through them using her Shadow Arts. She huffed, she could see the running taking a toll on her meters, but she had to get away or else the money she had stolen would be taken back by those two men. She hadn't expected the other man to care, it was just the busker's money after all!

Running and not paying attention, Kat managed to run herself headlong into someone. She grunted and stumbled backward, wobbly after headbutting the chest of whoever it was pretty fiercely. Despite that though, the man she ran into seemed to be completely unfazed by the hit, simply giving a bellyful laugh at the comparatively tiny Magia. Kat looked up, he was built like a brick house and hefted a pretty weighty-looking hammer on his shoulder. Kat whimpered and held her head, trying to stop the world from spinning from running directly into this man.

"Oy, look what the cat dragged in. You know, we was gonna beat up that busker for 'is money the kid so cleanly stole for us, but 'ere comes a little canary to 'and it right over. Ah, you will be 'anding it over, right sweetheart?"

Kat held the bag of money clutched to her chest, and backed away from the man. Looks like she had gotten herself too far in over her head again, and Ryou wasn't here to save her. But she knew those two would be coming, the busker and the man he was with. She'd give them the money back if she just got to live. It wasn't worth her life.

"No? Awright then, we do this the 'ard way. Wasn't plannin' on killin' a girl today, but you 'ad to make it difficult. Come on out boys!"

As Kat backed away further, men seemed to come out of the woodworks in the trees. Kat was completely surrounded. She fought the urge to cry and hoped the two men would get there in time to save her.

Into the Honeyhome Woods

Emerath listened to the women talk and then Creature's ideas, and he figured the plan was as good as any.

"Yeah, I'm in, let's track her down. Hopefully, this is a lead and not a waste of time, I'd hate to let her get even farther away with your money."

He nodded to Creature and began running in the direction the women had come from, hopping over the road debris out of town and dashing into the woods. As he got farther into the trees, he heard what sounded like voices, and diverted his running a bit to head in that direction. As they seemed to get closer, Emerath actually slowed down, and crouched, hoping that Creature would do the same. He snuck forward to a nearby tree, and carefully peered around it to see what appeared to be a girl holding a bag, presumably the stolen money, and an actual host of bandits. He wasn't close enough to clearly make out what the leader was saying, but it was clear that the girl was in danger.

But... she was a thief, wasn't she? Perhaps this was a part of the trap, luring these unsuspecting "heroes" into helping a poor defenseless little girl so that they can take out any witnesses to the crime. He looked to Creature, assuming that he was nearby at this point, and whispered.

"What do you think? Seems shifty to me, could go either way. Help her or wait and see what happens? If we pick wrong, she might die, provided this isn't a trap."

Even if it was a trap, Creature wasn’t about to let that little squirt (or anyone else) get away with their money. The bandits were merely an obstacle to the satisfaction the man would get from being able to beat her up himself. He gave Emerath a nod and a couple of gestures saying “follow my lead” before materializing his bat. With the casting of an aeromancy spell, a gust of wind was summoned to propel Creature forward out of cover. Mustering all the strength he could, the weapon made a sickening crack as it connected with the back of the nearest goon’s skull.

Listen up bastards; I won’t let you harm a single hair on her head… CAUSE IF ANYONE IS KILLING THIS GIRL TODAY, IT’S GONNA BE ME!

Placing a foot atop of their fallen comrade’s body, he’d wave the bloody bat between the remaining bandits in the hopes that they’d get the message and go quietly. Yet these things rarely went over so smoothly. Thankfully they hadn’t seemed to notice Emerath yet.

Shade fell upon the otherwise sun-kissed forest, beams of light fading away from the holed forest canopy as a few clouds covered up the sun. Like the shadow of a looming flag, it was a signal for other bandits to emerge. Two carried swords, intent on guarding their leader. Two carried crossbows, ready to fire as soon as they had aim.

These bandits were clearly built to ambush, perhaps to attack a carriage before defenses could be risen. Even still, they casually strolled out as if expecting the money to fall into their laps.

They were either confident or foolish today. The result of this bloody battle would determine which they had been.
