The time has come, for the greatest race of them all. A mad dash for many adults and children alike, through what is definitely not a haunted corn maze. Those are just rumors, okay?

The corn field is large, and though all the corn itself has been harvested and sent to the festival, the stalks still stand bunched as an eerie reminder in the darkness of what once stood here. The maze has been carefully carved out, and the farmers have put their heart and soul into the event to ensure everyone has a good time. For those not participating, a nearby set of bleachers on a hill provides a bird's eye view of the entire maze from the top down, set up only an hour before the race to prevent any cheating of participants.

Plenty of people are milling about in the starting area, only the moon shining on everyone's pale faces. There are no other lights in the darkness save for a table nearby with countless candles. As each pair steps up, a young man in overalls ties you and your partner together, one by the right wrist, and the other by the left wrist. The knot he uses is a farmer special, incredibly impossible to undo without cutting the rope off you. Once tied together, a little girl will come up to you and hand you a candle, your only provided light in the darkness. Should you be curious if there is a way to relight it, should your candle go out, you will be told that the answer is a definitive no. Protect your precious light.

Once all participants have been tied together and given their candles, they will be informed that the starting time will be shortly and told to take their positions at the very narrow entrance to the maze. Players will have to enter single-file just to get inside, and then, it's a mad dash to the finish. There is no time limit, but some say that we're still waiting for some participants to exit the maze to this day. Perhaps... you will meet them, or even join them. Good luck...

Cycle 0

Edit2_IMG_9130-1024x683-1.jpeg

Rules
  • This is a challenge and is private to only the players signed up for the event. If you wish to RP watching the corn maze race, please make your own separate thread and invite others to join you!
  • Both players, despite being tied together, act independently. Action will not be taken by your party until both players have acted on each given cycle.
  • During Cycle 0, there is no max word count. During the race max word count is 250 words excluding BBcodes.
  • There will be no comms between you and your partner. You are running a race, and any communication must take place within your limited word count.
  • Roughly every 24 hours I will post the new cycle, regardless of whether your party has taken action, updating the maze position for those who have taken action.
Setup
  • You and your partner are entering a dark maze with only a candle to guide you.
  • While your candle is lit, you can see in a one-square radius around you. Use the information while you can because...
  • Your candle can be snuffed out by fear. Each party has a sanity meter, and once it reaches zero, your candle goes out ramping up the terror and meaning that you can no longer see around you.
  • There are random events that will take place every Cycle for your party. The corn maze is haunted, and what may happen to you, may not happen to another, despite standing in the same spot...
Objective: Seek the exit. RUN.

Mechanics
Each Cycle you must make a short number of decisions. Based on the information you have, you and your partner must each make the independent decision to pick a direction, and how fast you will run. You may attempt to communicate these decisions IC, bearing in mind the word limit. I strongly urge players not to communicate these decisions OOC for fairness and for fun. Being tied together is a part of the challenge.

If at any point you and your partner do not agree on the same actions (direction and how fast to run), you must (as a party) pass a basic 50 DC check on a d100 roll. Either party member can roll this check on the next Cycle, pick whoever you feel is most lucky. If the check is not passed, you and your partner will tangle up with each other, and instead go in a random direction and move a random amount of squares.

For the turn when you do not agree, the actions taken will be picked randomly from between the two participants.

During your turn, you will pick a direction to go in the maze: Up, Down, Left, Right. This correlates to the way the map is given to you on the last cycle. The map position will be given to each set of players individually in a spoiler tag in the cycle.

During your turn, you will pick how many squares to move. You and your partner are capable of running up to five squares in a Cycle, and you will each independently also decide how fast to run choosing 1-5 squares along with your direction. Keep in mind that you can't see in front of you, so running with reckless abandon will have consequences. If you run into a maze wall by running too far, you must pass a 25 DC basic check on a d100 that stacks for each square you would have run past the wall. For example, if you choose to run 5 squares, and you move 2 squares and hit a wall, you would have moved 3 more squares, meaning you must pass a 75 DC check.

The previous check is independent for you and your partner. If one of you passes, you successfully stop your partner from running into the wall. If both party members fail, you get stuck in the wall, and lose sanity (if your candle is still lit). You will also be spending the next Cycle climbing back into the maze, essentially meaning you lose a turn, so make sure to move with purpose or understand the risks.

Once you have successfully moved, your party will be given their new map position. Bear in mind that you will only be given your final move position and not anything in between. It is dark, and you are running, and the faster you run the less information you retain in each given moment. Slower movements gather information, but faster movements get you closer to winning the race.

Cycle 0 is all about communication while you can, and setup. Talk to your partner, pick your first direction and speed based on what you can see at the start, and have fun! Or don't, I'm not your mom.

With a hand tied and another holding a handle, Hanno idly waited for the time of the challenge to start. It was sure a curious competition, and he couldn't lie, most of the faces over there were familiar, and the only one that wasn't quite familiar had a behavior that felt somewhat familiar- Something that picked Hanno's curiosity, but he didn't really try to think that much.

"Mizuki and Cleo on the same team..." Hanno looked at @Ueno Mizuki and @Cleo Looker, and then turned to look at @Rael with a soft smile. "... Rael on another."

He nodded sagely. "Yeah, that is so unfair it almost sounds like I'm diggin' my grave wishing you guys good luck!" He laughed, almost playfully shrugging

"But-- Good luck anyway! And make sure you guys won't get lost-"

His eyes then shifted to @Toko.

"Yeah buddy, our competitors are kinda tough this time! So what'cha wanna do? That left route looks promising, about as promising as the right one. So maybe left, we do a peek-a-boo with and sneak in, and see what's up?"

Suggesting Left with 3 Squares of movement.

Agrees with Hanno's suggestion of going left with 3 squares of movement.

It had been a while since she came across the familiar teal-haired faerin, though the grin she’d afforded him had been wide and bright regardless of it. Rumors of a race happening within a haunted corn maze from the Landers had brought Toko here, and to her delight Hanno had also been missing a partner for the event.

Her free hand flashed a thumbs up to their competitors as Hanno wished them good luck, while winning was always a treat it wasn’t required for the lepus to still have a good time with other players. "No kiddin’, they’re gonna give us a run for the prize~" Her attention turned back to the faerin her wrist had been tied with now, free hand resting under her chin as Toko gave his suggestion some thought.

"Ii yo," It wasn’t like they had much to go on given the limited visibility, and even the hare’s sensitive ears couldn’t pick out anything unusual from either choice available to them. "That sounds good to me, aiboo!"

Mizuki looked up at the bright moon that shone from up high, her own moon-eyes glowing as they reflected the light. Her gaze then moved down to the surprisingly intricate knot that tied her left wrist to @Cleo Looker's right wrist: She figured that Cleo might be able to undo it given enough time, but for Mizuki the only way to get free would be to cheat.

Not that they had the time, and even if they did it'd go against the rules of the competition they'd entered. To make their way through a corn maze and reach the finish before all the other contestants, with some very vague assurances that the maze wasn't haunted. Or rather, very insistent denial that the maze was haunted, which only brought attention to the possibility that it was haunted.

Hrmmm... What do you think Cleo?

Mizuki had been the one to suggest they join the competition, thinking it'd be a fun way to spend some time together while partaking in the festivities. It was hardly the first time that the wildling saw how the natives of Astorea and Falderen celebrated a successful harvest, but she hoped that Cleo would find it an interesting experience.

Cleo's answer would have to wait as the two of them were called out by @Hanno Futaba, who was apparently entering this competition together with that leporine beastfolk Mizuki had seen showing off during a tough fight more than once (@Toko). The faerin's humble comment was answered with a light smile and a nod.

The same for you on both accounts.

Given how mobile Toko was Mizuki didn't think Hanno was as at much of a disadvantage as he might believe, but she'd leave it up to the faerin and the beastfolk to figure out how to best work together.

The other team that stood out consisted of that pink elf who'd been very insistent during the Vintergard incident (@Rael) and one of the magia, who Mizuki couldn't even begin to place a name for but whose eccentric personality did linger in the mind.

Given how insistent the organisers are that this maze isn't haunted I'd prioritise not getting lost over getting to the finish as quickly as possible.

With that piece of advice out of the way the final question was how they could best approach this task. Even Mizuki's enhanced senses didn't tell her much about the maze's interior, which made her even more nervous than the insistence that there was no haunting going on. Eventually the beastfolk shook her head and sighed before looking at her human partner.

I'd say we play it safe: let's go to the right and stick to the wall to our right. As long as we pay attention to whether we've been somewhere before we should get through the maze eventually that way.

Certainly enough, this was not exactly what she'd had in mind when @Ueno Mizuki had talked about them getting tied together. A corn maze, the likes of which the organizers were promising wasn't haunted, under any kinds of circumstance. Cleo wasn't entirely sure she believed that, though looking at the rope that connected her to her girlfriend, then at the knots that secured the two of them together, there was only really one thing she could think about at that time.

What kind of knot obsessed freak had tied them together? Seriously, it'd take her ages to unravel this, if she didn't just cut it off.

Of course, such would be cheating, so she quickly abandoned that like of thought, instead looking around. Only one other familiar face, that one being @Hanno Futaba amongst the crowd, stood out to her, tied together with a woman that honestly looked like she could break him with intentions alone. Truly, she tipped her hat to the little guy, shaking her head.

I'm thinking that a haunted corn maze is a pretty mundane thing for a game that involves giant demonic bugs and robot hijacking women.

She glanced around again, looking at the entrance to the maze with an inquisitive frown. She could barely make anything out past the opening. Haunted or not, getting lost would really be an issue. She turned to Mizuki and nodded, rolling a shoulder.

Agreed, we stick to the right wall and prioritize wayfinding over speed.

Direction: Left to Tick and Tock's choosing.

Rael's Seamstress hummed happily as she relished over the farmer's knot that had been tied around both of the Summoner's wrists, tying her to each half of the consciousness that made Tick Tock a whole - her self-proclaimed little sisters. How they had ended up in a situation where such a dynamic would seep into their daily life as this, she had no idea, but it wasn't an unwelcome situation.

If anything, the twins made things more lively, and that, she could appreciate. The pink-haired elf put both of her hands over the heads of the twins, petting them affectionately in spite of the lack of emotion shown on her face.

"You overestimate us, I would say," Rael countered the Faerin's compliment in regards to her, at the very least, being considered tough competition, her tone as monotonous as ever. The elf, and the children to either side of her, having seemingly manifested out of nowhere.

"Do look out for one another, regardless of who wins. Taking a tumble in the dark is bound to leave a bruise, or worse. Good luck, everyone," her lips curled at the corners, the slightest pull of a smile as she inclined her head to those present, then turned to her own partners.

"Now, which way would you have us go? And, ah... Which one of you is the tallest? I would hold the candle, but surely you understand... My hands are quite literally tied."

Tick was the first to test the bindings that linked her with @Rael, like inseparable twins inside their mama's belly! Moving this arm meant Big Sis's would do the same. It's only luck that the girl of blue pigtails wasn't participating, if only binding them to their fates within the corn maze... That would be too many arms even for The trio.

"Thanksies Seamstress! Tick will take -knot- of how you did these for the future."

She winked back at Tock, who couldn't reciprocate the laughter from her sister as she glanced around in a fit of panic. No matter where she gazes within this dark and spooky maze...

"Corn..."

Her yellow & green weakness. The banana pretender who could choke her should she dare to try and eat it- A poisoned apple en masse, Tock felt like that snoring princess right now, in pure woe of the dreadful apparatus of doom that awaited with a bright entrance announcing it's territory: The CORN maze.

"Don't worry big sis, just look at him! He don't even know how to open his eyes! Hehe..."

The competition was FIERCE regardless. Between Alpha Hound & Redhead, and Rabbit & Man, she couldn't tell which would make it to the end... On second place of course, as Tick has no intent to lose!

"Both of us are the tallest and smallest! But that's easy to solve, big sis. We'll just put the candle on Tock's head!"

"Corn..."

The blue twin had no way to fight back, her mind spaced with the ad infinitum Corn presented to her. It was easier said than done however, as to keep the candle from falling, some wax was poured on the puppet's hairs to give it some sense of stability. With a pinch of luck it should stay lit, so long as they don't send Tock falling head-first to the floor...

"Let's finish the song from earlier Tock, that will calm you down. You join us too, Sis!"

Tick didn't waste a second to explain, as the words forced a wide smile onto Tock's lips, miracles happening in the span of a second as Tick pointed with her free hand to the left, before pulling out her sunglasses from her pocket, as the duo begun to fist pump up in the air.

Obviously that means Rael's included on the fist pumping, given their wrist-knot predicament.

"Gold jewelry shinin' so bright..."

"Strawberry champagne on ice..."

"Lucky for you, that's what Tick likes, that's what Tock likes"

"Lucky for you, that's what Tock likes, that's what Tick likes"

"Se-"

"SKIP THAT PART!"

"-By the fire at night..."

"Silk sheets and diamonds all white..."

"Lucky for you, that's what Tick likes, that's what Tock likes"

"Lucky for you, that's what Tock likes, that's what Tick likes"

The teams began to enter the maze, single file. There was only room for one person line to squeeze between the thick walls of the remaining husks and what people may or may not have noticed is that a thick fog began to overtake the maze as they did so. The fog seemed to make every other team in the maze vanish, leaving them in what seemed to be a maze all by themselves.

Onlookers from outside the maze on the nearby hill would see nothing out of the ordinary, as the teams milled about, ran around, and experienced the corn maze. Participants, however, were suddenly engulfed by the strange aura that seemed to overtake everyone. One might be led to believe that the only reason you could even still see your partner, is because you were tied together...

Objective: Seek the exit. RUN.

Mechanics

**NEW MECHANIC**
Moving around corners: This works much the same as choosing a straight line direction, however, you must note the direction and number of squares in the order you are moving. For example, if you wished to move 1 Square Left, and 2 Squares Up, you would list your actions as:
- Direction: Left, Squares: 1
- Direction: Up, Squares: 2

Otherwise, normal movement rules apply, max of 5 squares total. If you run into a wall, the penalty check applies based on the total remaining squares across all movements.

Please only read your team's spoilers. We can all enjoy OOC each team's journey after the race is over!

Hanno & Toko
8038f788-40c5-41c0-9e8e-6ad6dd4ca79b.png
As Toko and Hanno move through the maze at a brisk pace, the candle suddenly illuminates a figure in the fog. An old man stands curiously still in the clearing, potentially startling the two as they stumble upon him. He is as motionless as a statue, but if approached he will suddenly open his eyes and look at the pair as if this is the most natural place for him to be.

"Greetings Children," he will say, before continuing, "I have a riddle for you. My rivers are dry, my forests have no trees, my towns are flat and empty, and my roads cannot be walked on. What am I?"

You are unsure of what benefit, if any, there is to answer this man's riddle. You may choose to do so, or ignore him and continue on through the maze as normal.

Ueno & Cleo
82c196d3-b3ec-475f-8589-4cb9cd013147.png
A soothing melody begins to play throughout the maze. You are unsure if anyone else is able to hear it, or if only you can. It seems to soothe any fatigue and weariness that you may be feeling, almost as if you are being lulled to sleep by a lullaby.

Your team has started to become tired after hearing the song, and loses 1 square of movement this round, leaving you with a maximum of 4 squares.

Rael & Tick Tock
50da9cb8-b1f3-4092-9380-ee5890cdf74b.png
As your team moves through the maze, you suddenly hear a nearby rustling inside of the corn maze wall. Then, completely unprompted, a giant dung beetle rolls a giant ball of, presumably, dung, right through the clearing in front of you, as if the wall wasn't even there. The beetle is the size of an average humanoid, and upon spotting you stops and stares at your team.

Nobody moves, and you are unsure of what will happen next if you choose to try to move past the beetle, but you best move quickly, as the smell of whatever it is rolling around is absolutely rancid.

That's one way of looking at things.

Cleo certainly had a point that in a world with magic, monsters, and misadventures, a maze wasn't the strangest of things, even if it was potentially haunted. The wildling still frowned, however, glaring at the labyrinth that stretched out before them as it continued to be annoyingly effective at leaving her in the dark.

Still, ghosts and spirits would be difficult to deal with, given that neither of us uses Spirit Magic.

With the signal to enter the maze given Mizuki would give Cleo the candle to hold before leading the way, stepping forward to be swallowed by the green stalks left behind by the harvest. The rising mist made her move cautiously, grasping Cleo's hand to make sure the redhead was still with her.

I knew it. Something is intentionally interfering with our senses.

With the other participants having disappeared there was little to do but move onwards. At first there was nothing but more stalks as Mizuki kept track of the wall to their right, but then a mysterious song began to slither past her ears and into her mind, making the caenis blink with equal wariness and weariness.

Do you hear that as well Cleo?

Her beastfolk hearing was sharper, but it was loud enough that her partner should also be able to hear it. Shaking her head Mizuki kept moving, trying to dismiss the strange melody and keep track of their route.

Lacking Spirit Magic would be a little bit of an issue, though Cleo placed a finger on her chin and hummed, accepting the candle as it was handed over to her. She wasn't sure they'd be able to fight something in this maze anyway. Or, at least, it hadn't seemed like they were signing up for some gladiator fight against ghosts and such when they'd been signing up for it.

Were they even allowed to use their magics and different masteries?

She wrapped a hand hand around Mizuki's when they entered and began to be surrounded by mists, stroking the back of her girlfriend's hand with a thumb to try and soothe just a little bit. Both for herself and for Mizuki.

You have the stronger senses between the two of us, so I'll let you take the lead.

She whispered to her partner as they moved along, until faint sounds began to pick up, getting louder and louder. It grew, until Cleo could vaguely recognize it as music. A song of some kind. Listening to it, it felt like it was sapping her energy. Curling up with Mizuki and taking a nap sounded like a possible good idea.

It was, just not now.

I hear it too. Just do your best to ignore it and we should be okay.

Intrigued by the riddle, willing to forgo movement to answer it if Hanno’s in agreement.

A look back confirmed one of the pairs (a trio by the looks of it) had also chosen to go left like they had, but before the lepus could point out the company to her faerin companion a thick fog seeped in...

"Eh? Sore wa nan’ desuka?" It didn’t take long before the vision around them was covered by the mysterious mist, cutting off not just the visibility of others but their sounds too… almost as if they were the only two present in the maze now.

The sudden appearance of the elderly man was disconcerting at first, before the spoken riddle seemed to catch Toko’s attention. After all, the point of this maze was for players to celebrate the autumn harvest and have a good time, so the chances of there being something dangerous within the corn fields were practically zero… right?

"Eetoh... Dried rivers, and treeless forests…" A look was given towards her partner, she’d never been the best at riddles but she still wished to try and answer it. "I can think of one thing that fits but…"

It felt a bit too on the nose as some would say… could it actually be the right answer?

The old man that seemed to interrupt their path at first was an intriguing sight. Hanno slowed down along with his bunny buddy, tilting his head at the riddle that surely had a very contrasting context. A river that was dry sounded kinda silly, and a road one couldn't walk on sounded worse, because at least the former was a phenomenon that could actually happen.

His friend seemed to had already caught it, and it apparently it was more obvious to her than it was to him, but that didn't stop him from making a guess...

"... The only thing that has a 'flat city' is a map, as far as I know." Hanno turned to Toko, pondering about it and turning to the man. "... I'd say it is a map! Which, talking about it, would you happen to have one for us, buddy?"

Hanno grinned to the man.

Guessing the answer is 'Map', unless @Toko has another suggestion

Intending on moving forward, past the funny-looking obstacle.

Song accompanied the trio's every footstep, with the elf dutifully providing background vocals as necessary for the two of them, much more resembling a leisurely walk than anything remotely frightful. Light conversation could even happen!

"You can only be calmed through music? I guess that does stand to reason, considering... Well, everything. Alright, Bruno Mars - what's next? What else is it that you like?"

Her career of choice in the outside world often saw her pretending to be scared. Her brand, her content, was built upon a wide array of falsehoods, none complicated enough so as to later make it impossible for her to traverse through the weave - but small things. Heightening one's joy, eliciting a scream out of fear when faced with a jumpscare, downplaying annoyances... Things like those.

Terrasphere was different, for Rael didn't so much as flinch when the creature appeared, merely regaining a step backward out of caution. Her face remained set in a blank, sapphire blues peering at the strange beetle... And then, lifting one of her hands at the detriment of one of the sisters to cover her nose.

"Ugh... Let us press forward now, please. Hurry, hurry."

"Makes you wonder if it's a magia weakness." Tick tried to finish Rael's thought, as her reasoning wasn't exactly 'wrong', a coincidence neither of the sisters could deny about. "Tock's the one who loves to sing though. Tick loves to listen." She concluded, yet before her mouth could open once again, the unholy sight of a bettle showed up within their periphericals.

And Tock screamed for but a short second, as Tick pushed her arm at an angle to make Rael's hand quiet her twin, exhaling in relief as she froze on place to watch the ball of dungus infront of them. "Aha, before we can continue our song, let's get around this bettle, least you want to hear Tock play a horror Soprano on your eardrums!" Hasty steps guided her forth, doing her best to act as the guide even when the one with the candle was her sister.

And so they moved at the pace of 'Hurry hurry' from the monotone big sister they had, comically long steps to cover greater ground in the process.

"Ice-cold, Big Sis! You are more magia than us! Perhaps you are... A magia spy?" She humoured the idea, memories of these same lines being told to their mother ringing on their ears. Perhaps that's where the family came from: Eva and Rael were like bricks in the face of the supernatural.

The fog only seems to grow thicker for the participants as they move through the maze, almost as if it is trying to strangle the light from the candle each team holds in their hands. The teams have gotten a small taste of what weirdness seems to be in the maze, and things will only continue to get weirder...

Cycle 2

RUN.

Mechanics

Moving around corners: This works much the same as choosing a straight line direction, however, you must note the direction and number of squares in the order you are moving. For example, if you wished to move 1 Square Left, and 2 Squares Up, you would list your actions as:
- Direction: Left, Squares: 1
- Direction: Up, Squares: 2

Otherwise, normal movement rules apply, max of 5 squares total. If you run into a wall, the penalty check applies based on the total remaining squares across all movements.

Please only read your team's spoilers. We can all enjoy OOC each team's journey after the race is over!

The old man smiles as he is answered by the two standing in front of him. "Why yes, my Children, that is correct. The answer is a map." He chuckles at the question asked by the young knight in front of him, "No, I do not offer a map of the maze, that would make things a bit too easy for you youngsters. But I do offer some wisdom. You are going the wrong way." The old man points back the way that the duo came, and whether they choose to look where he points, or simply blink, when they next look where he was standing the old man will have vanished.

In his place, now stands a 5-foot hole that seems to have no bottom, should the participants choose to look down into it. They may attempt to cross this hole and ignore the old man's words of advice, but they must both pass a combined DC 50 check between the two participants or fall into the hole.

Or, they can simply go back the way they came, as they were advised...

As the pair makes their way around the corner of the maze, the soothing melody fades, leaving them otherwise no worse for wear. However, in the wake of the lack of music, the maze itself seems to be coming alive to antagonize the duo.

As they move, corn stalks begin to bend and get in the way of the two, attempting to trip them, smack them, or otherwise just be a nuisance. There is nobody in the walls moving the husks and causing them to do this, they appear to just be moving on their own.

The team loses -15 Sanity as a result of the stalks moving and bending on their own and getting in the way.

As the trio makes their attempt to hurry past the large dung beetle, it doesn't budge. It simply stares at them in curious wonder. The dung pile, on the other hand, seems to have other plans, as it explodes in a vicious display of brown fog and rancid smell that almost feels bad enough to coat the inside of your brain. As the players move past the disgusting fog around them, they find that the dung beetle is gone, showing no signs of ever having existed to begin with.

As a result of attempting to move past the beetle, your team takes -11 Sanity Damage.

Once past that mess, the team continues to its current position. However, there is now a sneaking suspicion that you are being followed by something. If you attempt to look for it, it disappears, and all you hear is the sound of rustling leaves. As a part of your next turn, you may each attempt a DC 20 check while moving to try to find the source of the feeling and sounds, or you may simply ignore it and continue onwards...

In this template, your HP is your Sanity Meter.

With the two of them doing their best to ignore the music they made their way forwards, Mizuki occasionally twitching her ears and shaking her head as the sounds kept bothering her. When they began to fade away she let out a sigh of relief, glad that the lullaby was no longer trying to mess with her head.

Let's hope whatever made that noise stays away... what the?

She'd hardly finished talking before she suddenly found herself with a faceful of corn stalks. Where before there had been a clear path between the plants now the damn things were getting in the way, the wildling swatting them aside with her free hand before finding that they just kept returning.

Stupid... frigging... plants! (She growled.) Bugger off!

They weren't responsive to her Nature Magic either, so the best she could do was force a way through the stalks with Cleo staying behind her, carrying the weakened flame.

You okay Cleo?

Corn did not usually move on its own to impede the progress of young women attempting to navigate a maze filled with it. Cleo figured she would have known if that was a known phenomenon. It was still a problem though and it was quite hard to guard the flame from the assaulting vegetation. And so too was it difficult for her to make sure that the flame didn't set the corn alight either. It wasn't like she wanted to be trapped in the middle of an inferno.

At least the damn singing sound had faded away.

Blasted corn. Stupid maze...

Cleo grumbled, keeping a tight hold of Mizuki's hand as they continued onwards. Even if they were tied together, she was determined to make sure they couldn't be separated from one another. And to answer Mizuki's question, she gave the Caenis' hand a soft squeeze and chuckled lightly.

I've been through way worse than this before. There's no need to worry about me. Let's just press onwards.

Suggested backtracking full speed, so 5 squares to the right.

It seemed they had both arrived at the same answer, and to the hare’s delight the old man soon confirmed it to be the correct one. "Aww… worth a shot though." Unfortunately for them getting the riddle right hadn’t provided them with an actual map of the maze, but their efforts were rewarded as the old man shared some wisdom with them—they were going the wrong way.

"You sure, ojii-saneh?" Her words cut off upon looking back to see their mysterious riddler gone, a gaping hole now occupying the space instead. A soft whistle escaped Toko as she tried to glance downwards, unable to tell how deep it might truly be, before her attention turned to the faerin beside her.

She didn't see a reason to distrust the old man and his words, and they were already at a disadvantage considering the time already spent here. "Wanna book it back full speed?"

Hanno crossed his arms as the man didn't give them anything but a word of advice. He tapped his feet a couple times, letting out a sigh when all they were left to was a hole. They would need to make it do with what they had, which was a very blatant call that they have done the wrong call by turning left.

"Ojii-san is gone." He looked at Toko with a grin. "And by his words, we should be gone too. So it is better to start working on it." Hanno looked around, especially behind his back, until Toko took the initiative.

"Sure! Just be careful though, my legs are much shorter than yours." Hanno chuckled, hoping that the bunny woman wouldn't just dart off in her usual speed. If she did, he would just be carried away like a ragdoll, and as fun as it sounded, he would rather deal with surviving to the dangers of the maze, not to his ally.

-11 Sanity from Beetle (Yuck!)
DC 20 - Successful!

The memory of their march forward would be marred forevermore by the foul stench of the beetle, one of the twins' hands lifted in accordance to permit the elf to stifle the scent from assaulting her nostrils.

"Perhaps I am," she entertained the idea outloud once they had been given enough room to breathe in the barest minimum of fresh air, her gratitude expressed in a fleeting boop to either of their noses. It was clear to see where the overexaggerated mannerisms of her Summons came from, when contrasted to those who commanded them and the gestures she seldom used.

"Would that not be quite a twist? Though at this point, anyone would have been able to figure out and some of the mystique would have dissipated, making for a delayed revelation to have much lesser of a payoff than one given in the face of strife..."

A rustle from behind them caught by pointed ears gave her pause, relinquishing the task of guidance to the two at either side of her while she leaned her chin slightly upward. Then, without preamble, she gently bid Tock look towards the source of the noise, a fun instruction provided:

"Tock, we have an audience. Show them the full extent of your vocal range."
