Madison stood there, entirely unsure how she even got there.

She was enjoying a few pulls from her flask (and not one of the fruity-ass drinks only available for a limited time that could be purchased with the clout from helping to kill Titanius that was collecting dust in her account; proper fuckin' spirits that served the dual purpose of inebriation and disinfectant if needs must) when word was getting around camp that one of their little expedition's greatest was looking for a little sparring match.

And when Madison's boots hit the dusty earth, what she saw instead was... A gremlin. For a lack of better word.

(Actually, the better word would have been Legend-With-A-Capital-L; but hey; it's a big world, and she hadn't been around much these past four years.)

The gunslinger drew her revolvers. "I don't have time for this. It's time for a nap, kid." It wasn't until after she pulled the triggers that she remembered--Oh--! It's a good thing I never took the non-lethal rounds out after sparring with Cleo!

One moment, Alpha was enjoying her pixy stix. The next, some scary-looking lady shot her! Look, as much as Alpha loved her country and the second amendment, this was going a bit too far. Honestly, who shoots at a person because you wanted to tuck them into bed?! Alpha froze.

Could this be...her mom? In game form? Is she coming here to make her go to bed on time?!

Alpha snarled, her teeth gnashing as she twisted her fingertips, slowing the bullets down to a near stop (a few inches away from her face for dramatic tension). "Never!" Alpha roared, raising her blade up at the stranger. "You will never get me go to bed. I don't want to go to bed! You can't make me!"

With a stomp of her feet, she tossed the dagger through the air, her face contorted into indignation and, in her opinion, the face of a revolutionary. A person who would deny the monarchy power over the innocent people. A face of viva la resistance. She would be glorified, memorized, a martyr in the history books. "You'll never catch me alive, mother!"

Matricide is on the table tonight, folks.

"Mother?!" Such indignation! Such fury! Did this little creature imply that she was old? That she was stupid enough to have children? Oh boy, the knuckles were white now. Blood: boiling. All hell: coming with her to put this little shit to BED and TUCK HER IN without a BEDTIME STORY.

And then, she caught sight of the knife being flung at her.

"Motherfu--!!" She panicked, calling on the shadows to pull her to safety. Her magics were not quick enough--the dagger connected with her shoulder just as she fell backwards, and instead of dropping into the inky blackness the gunslinger awkwardly landed on the ground, half-submerged in shadow, flailing around like... well... the drunk hag that she was after tripping and falling into a kiddie pool.

She regained enough composure to fire off two shots. The first, verbal.

"Grounded or in the ground, take your pick young lady!"

The second, of course, was from her other revolver.

"Ow, ow, ow! Wow, mom, I don't know which hurt more: the bullet or your sheer edginess!" Alpha coughed, her breathing a bit winded from, you know, getting shot by a freaking gun. Still, Alpha could quip back. Her sharp little dagger isn't the only edgy thing about her! And, apparently, she inherited a lot of it from her mom. Which explains a lot, actually.

"Seriously though, young lady?!" Her voice was a bit strained as she gazed down on her trusty dagger, a chip of metal falling off from the blade after her attempted deflection. Unfortunately, her Genji cosplaying skills were a bit lacking. With a sigh, Alpha chucked the dagger behind her and, reaching into her pocket, grabbed another identical dagger.

"Guess what, mom?" She tilted her head to the side, a grin spreading across her face. "I'm not gonna go to sleep! You're gonna have to ground all of us!" Alpha flicked her finger, the shadows coalescing into replicas of Alpha. One had a mustache, another had a piece of toast in their mouth, and another one was a buff, 7'3" fully grown man with cat ears.

Alpha lifted her hand above her head, bent at the elbow and, with a quick motion, slash her dagger down to point straight at her mother. From this angle, a glint would reflect in her eyes as she and her illusions charged.

Somewhere, deep, deep down, Alpha felt a tinge of happiness at this mother-daughter bonding experience they're sharing.

"Well--uhh--I mean, yes, young lady. That's what you are, aren't you?" Banter was never her strong suit. Madison was very much a gunslinger in a duel; she had one, maybe two good verbal shots in her. Fire fast, fire true--and hope like hell that it was enough to make the music swell and the credits roll.

In this fight, she was outmatched.

While she was scrambling to reload (and not just fall back on Ol' Reliable, the F-bomb), Alphabet waved into existence several clones ranging from "oh, is this a meme?" to "abomination in the eyes of God" (for Madison's money, that one was the one carrying toast in her mouth). And while the whole lot of them charged her position, a pair of inky arms attached to a body made of pure abyss reached up, wrapped themselves tight around her chest, and nope'd her forward into the shadows underfoot.

It was a couple seconds of reprieve. Time to catch her breath. Maybe think of a new insult to sling! Load some more non-lethals into her guns!

Only two of those got accomplished before the shadows spat her back out and she began firing indiscriminately at the various flavors of Chocolate.

"Calling people young lady was so 2022, mom! Get with the times!" she blew a raspberry. She paused for a minute, her clones stopping as well. One had a finger on her chin, Alpha Cena, the 7'3" cat god, chewed on his bottom lip like the main love interest of a Japanese anime show. She gave a noticeable look towards the gun. "Are those actual bullets? I think I saw a guy firing energy bullets or something earlier, it looked a bit more convenient. Is this one of those things that old people do like print out copies of papers and use highlighters when they could've just filled it out online and sent it through email?"

Alpha couldn't help but grow increasingly enamoured by this concept. "That's actually kinda cool in a vintage and retro kinda way, except you're not cool cause you're a parent and parents aren---ow!" Alpha yelped, jumping back a little. She quickly ducked for cover and looked around her, only to see the madwoman sprayng bullets all over the place. One went straight through Alpha Cena's muscular pecs.

"Holy fudge, ma!" her mouth was gaped open, face slack at the sheer destruction. Inside Alpha rose a new feeling of horror and a slight bit of respect. Despite her new image of her mother, however, Alpha had plans to win this duel.

"Alrighty then, try this!" Alpha leaped up into the sky, dagger raised high above her head, ready to gently stab through her mother's flesh.

"Use your fuckin' big girl words," Madison growled as she emptied her revolvers. "Maybe instead of fighting, I should be teaching you how to swear!"

The raven dipped behind a couple crates, her fingers moving like blurs as she frantically reloaded. She barely heard Alphabet take to the air; and definitely didn't see her crashing towards her until it was too late. Well, really she felt her first--the dagger sinking into her, pushing her, pushing her screaming into the dirt.

Madison grit her teeth, despite the pain. "This is my favorite shirt!" As much as she struggled, Alphabet had a strength inside her that betrayed her tiny size. "What the fuck is it with everyone using real sharp shit during these practice bouts?" Her free arm snaps up, grabbing the girl by the wrist. "At least I'm using rubber bullets. At least I'm the only one with the common courtesy not to waste everyone else's healing potions and spells!"

Of course, it wasn't the four or five inches of steel rudely intruding in her torso that cut her the deepest; it was the implication that Madison Freebird wasn't cool. That's what truly set her off. That's what lit the fires of anger in her eyes. That's what guided her revolver's barrel an inch away from this child's leg; what made her finger pull the trigger.

"Heed this lesson well, daughter; In a world filled with Crunchyroll Originals, strive to be a Trigun!"
