Time: Break of Dawn

Darkness.

The sounds of battle that scorched miles of earth had come to an end. Time had passed since the struggle at Camp Hope and now another battle loomed. This was it, for the first time since their return. It was time for the Starcalled to rattle the world again. Not on the defensive, but on the offensive against machines that ravaged their home and shall not be tolerated any longer. Not even crickets dared break this silence as if the world watched in wait for what was to come.

A glint of light.

The sun peaked its head, spreading its rays ever so slowly across the land. Over the distant northern heights, over the forests all around, and over the statue of the Immortal Heroine. Soon, a weapon of war will be placed here and moved into battle once again as the sun inches it's way to the peak of day.

"...Sorry. Apologizing for things now. Look at me."

A metal hand rested upon the great kneeling statue of a lost Starcalled. The hand belonged to an averagely-sized figure. Cloaked with hood pulled back and long ponytail swaying gently in the brisk morning air. The arm exposed was lean and unnaturally smooth for human flesh, more a blur that resembled what could be seen through a badly focused lens than actual skin.

The sunlight reached her and lit her aglow. Her other hand rose to her face and her eyes glanced at what lay in it.

"Vintergard. I don't know much about it, but I know that what happened was uncalled for and..."

Her mouth stopped moving as she spoke to the statue as if it were able to talk back. The look on her face showed that she knew it could not. Upon her steel palm was shriveling strings of light. The threads twisted almost as if trying to escape like entangled worms of ether or sentient bowl of ghostly spaghetti. Her gauntlet closed over them and the light went out in her fist. Fragments of that light scattered into the morning like pollen from an ethereal flower.

"Tossing a stone into a lake. What happened to just going for a swim? At least got him to play his hand. I just... everyone and their dog is gathering here. That one's design is so... yeah... you too."

Her eyes shifted slightly and she spoke in a hardened tone.

"I know you're lurking there. Strange to be eavesdropping somewhere like this.."

"I prefer cats myself and, hey, I'm not the one talking to a statue. She's long gone, kinda like... ya know. You must be really lonely."

The voice carried on the wind seemed to come from behind the statue.

"I like to clear my head sometimes, less thinking once it comes out of your mouth. What are you..."

"I dunno, what are you? I'm surprised you aren't going ham just from me being here."

"..."

"Aww, I sorta was looking forward to a good time while I wait. Tsk tsk, look, I was just hanging around for a rendezvous and thought I'd come to check out the nutjob talking to the immortal stiffy here this early in the morning, kehe."

The long-haired pinkette's body ceased its shimmering and became semi-transparent as she turned away from the statue now.

"You sure like to interrupt people when they talk. Not that I'm surprised with who you involved yourself with."

"Hey, I'm being nice here for once. I can see you've been through some shit. I have an eye for it see? Your meddling is just going to lead to more disap-"

"Too late! Already did."

Pulling up her hood, a smirk crossed her face as she faded away.

"Pfft... Welp. So much for charity."

Time: Morning

The ground rumbled as a huge pieced-together machine rolled up to the assembled Starcalled. Smoke came out of it in areas and it made many concerning noises but it was intimidating indeed... in a certain double-edged way.

"Mecha Goose!"

Nin shouted the name over her mouth speaker to the people calling it a robot duck. Which felt completely inaccurate to the scientist. The machine had been a carefully labored-on design of Nin's for about a year now. Even with arguments against it, she had stubbornly refused to make it any shape besides a goose. The reasoning was something she refused to say. Using the tinkering and gadgetry of pre-Dragonfall with whatever scraps and information she could gather from Adventurer's Guild members (such as @Moonsong @Zelrius @Kamala Graham @Ayna Nietzsche) collecting around the Magia dystopia. After recruiting @Tetsunosuke the final preparations moved forward much more quickly.

The goose was nearly the size of the Immortal Heroine, but of course... shaped like a legless goose. It had a multitude of wheels attached to its sides and a buzzsaw attached to the front below the neck. Allowing easy traversal of the western woodland. The saw had to be run by 2 different crew members that swapped responsibilities to lessen energy consumption. The wheels each were powered by magitech and had one person conducting maintenance there as well.

This was all besides the actual attack team. The goal was to ensure they could go in firing on all cylinders. So this time extra manpower was supplied. Protecting Camp Hope was highly beneficial in making that possible.

The beak of the goose would act as the bridge to get the Starcalled onto the walls once they had arrived. With them exiting from the tightly closed steel "eyelids"

As everyone was preparing to board the cramped war machine. Nin would take note of each of them and check their name on her clipboard.

"Mhm... mhm... ah yes... good. Everyone onboard? If you want to do any sort of preparation during the ride, go ahead. The Mecha Goose is built for stability but not acceleration. There are ports that you may use to attack things or whatnot. "

She adjusted her glasses and frowned.

"Just please, don't miscalculate your problems. For every multiple division from the required total, I will be tasked with reporting that subtraction and salvaging the remainder of the quotient. Sigh... what I mean is, don't cause damage to the Mecha Goose."

The boarding plank was pulled up and the latch closed. The Mecha Goose's saw went to work chopping its way through the forest and moved along the walls of the capital. Sentries alerted and several Magia defense squads emerged from the tops of the wall and hidden in the foliage...

The Mecha Goose shall embark.
The Mecha Goose shall run amok.
The Mecha Goose shall persevere.

Soon you will have to do the same.

  • Mecha Goose

    1000 / 1000

It's time to breach the Vintergard walls and lay siege to the Magia menace! Your job is to help Mecha Goose reach its destination and clear out any approaching enemy forces. Choose your options from the ones below!

    Maintenance: Decrease Damage

    50 / 500
Use expertise or mastery checks to help the goose reach its destination with as little damage as possible. In the damage phase the goose will receive damage based on both of these bars' progress (Maintenance and Reave Steel). The more damage the goose takes, the more damage that will be dealt to your party in the damage phase.

The MIT's supplied maintenance crew has added 50 to the progress.

    Reave The Steel

    0 / 500
Using exit ports on both sides of the Mecha Goose and the front of its neck. You may launch an offensive against the machine's defense force. Use any standard attack action (special and bonus actions are not available, however, passive and armor abilities are ok). The more you defeat this cycle the less damage the goose and thus your party will take in the damage phase.

If you are brave (or crazy) you may exit unto one of the goose's wings and fight outside while the siege weapon plows through the region. You will take additional damage in the damage phase but gain +30 on all your Reave The Steel rolls this cycle.

    Prepare for War

Behind the Mecha Goose's metal walls, you have an opportunity to ready yourself for what's to come. Use any standard support action (special and bonus actions are not available, however, passive and armor abilities are ok) in your player sheet to be ready the moment the walls are breached. You may use support actions on anyone you'd like (excluding Nin). Support actions used besides inspire cannot be used for the other options this cycle.

  • NPC Guide

    • NPC armor type only affects their armor ability (Surge, Twice, Immortal), not their HP.
    • NPC actions are limited. This limit is set for the entire thread unless a player sheet revision and armor ability reset occurs. NPC should be considered still active in story but mechanically only assist with these actions. By using the comms thread, you may make a request for an NPC (@Pandora*) to take action or to conserve their action for a later cycle.
    • NPC Combat Style is not a strict factor but a guideline.
    • NPCs take their turn at the end of every cycle unless a unique passive or ability is in play.
    • Morale affects how NPCs approach many things including how fast their health drops.
    • NPC are not obligated to remain in an event until the end and may exit a thread due to morale or plot reasons.

    Nin
    Magical Institute of Theory

    <Mathematician>
    Healthy
    3/3 Actions
[Armor Type: Light] [Combat Style: Supportive] [Morale: Average]

Calculated Assist: (Passive) Nin rolls a 2d5 at the start of every cycle. All Allies (including self) receive +25 to all rolls (before modifiers) whenever they land a total that is a multiple of the result.

Alchemic Formula: (Passive) All Alchemy actions are rolled with an advantage within 1 ring of zones around Nin.

Preparing for Battle

Unknownly, Hanno rested his hand, perhaps on the same spot another one similarly had done way before the group and the Metal Goose were there, ready for a combat. The Faerin looked up at the Heroine, which he had been visiting ever since he found out about who exactly she was.

"... It is our turn to attack, Corvella... We will take back what you sacrificed so much to protect." He said, pressing his hand against the statue as he looked up at her head, far up in the sky. Soon, his hand squeezed tight into a clenched fist, taking a deep breath as he turned around to hurry near the Metal Goose, tugging his scarf up almost nearly tucking his chin into it.

His eyes noticed a figure, one that wasn't familiar, but he knew her from the Lions Pride list, one couldn't miss that eccentric appearance and 'Tick Tock' as alias.

Nearing her, he spoke- "Hey buddy. Thanks for coming to help us, it means a lot. But remember, if things go too dire, retreat cautiously. We don't need to lose anyone." He mustered a small smile, glancing to the side to see. "You as well, Rael. Granted... You aren't any newbie at this point, right?" He rose an eyebrow, crossing his arms. "Even helping to turn a whole fight around, you guys grow way too fast." Hanno chuckled, giving both of them an encouraging tap on their backs before continuing his march.

"Moonsong!" He called. "Time to put that training into practice, gotcha? We can't fail, not in front of our friend, right?" Hanno smirked, casting a fond glance to the statue before turning to face her. "I got your back though, and I will be counting on you too." He said, confident of her capabilities.

"You as well, buddy." He said, nudging the Shield, that rumbled and opened her central eye, blinking at the faerin that paused, focused his energies and muttered a plea for Rhiannon's strength, wishing to empower his allies with a warm protection, that soon engulfed them along with an inspiring aura.

❰ Goddess Call - Divine Protection ❱

With spirits and body reinforced, from both allies and himself, Hanno pushed through, finally reaching the huge construct, and the MIT Lady that supervised it.

"How long do you think it can handle, considering the strength of the enemy we found so far?" He asked to Nin (@Pandora*), curious about the capabilities of the giant construct they had as ally.

If she was coming here for the purpose of a simple fight, she would've thrown jokes and bantered with her comrades (and most likely commented on how funny the design of the siege machine was). Unfortunately for all her enemies, she set foot near the Immortal Heroine for one simple revenge; total annihilation of the magia.

There were faces she had acquainted with, particularly the faerin defender who she had been trained under.
"Of course,"
Moonsong nodded to Hanno. Their training the past few days was to prepare for this moment. She glanced at the face of the statue, keeping a straight face. "Watch me."

The Mecha Goose moved steadily, chopping through the woods like it was nothing. The magia was quickly alerted to their presence and sent several flying bots to stop them. "This time, I'm the invader." Not bothering to move, Moonsong observed them from the safety of the siege engine, summoning and sending her arcane blades outside to tear the machines apart.

Zelrius pushed off from his leaned down position, done inspecting the statue that was before the party. This was prestige, and honor in its highest form. This woman, - Corvella, some of the landers and other starcalled had called her by - was the essence of a hero, and had the likeness of a stone statue to show for it. The very presence of her, even in this form, drove the Magia away. What were her final thoughts, in that golden moment? What was she like? His blue eyes had drifted up, and then down her form. Then, slowly glided to the side, in a blur of hair colors and outfits, and landing on @Moonsong .

Those pupils were whipped away, the approaching 'Magia' stopping short of them. There was a moment of tension, where Zelrius was ready to draw his volcanic blades, just before Nin's voice declared the contraption over the buzzing microphone. This was... our Mecha Goose? A final look at those present, some of which he recognized. There was the Pink-haired elf from the Labyrinth, @Cain Darlite who had unmistakable attire and posture, his fellow Platinum-Ranked adventurer @Moonsong. Then, there were those he didn't. @Seigi Ling Ling was talked about, and hard to miss, even if he didn't know her personally. But he didn't know anything about the two puppy girls, or the blonde... man(?) that was there as well. Leaving only @Chrys - whom was recognizable from the Parlor. Though the two had never spoken more than a few rods to each other.

And a girl with spider legs protruding from her head. He had seen players with their bottom halves turned into spider bodies through the usage of Metamorph or Evoke, but nothing quite like that before. Assisted by the shining Elf-Knight beside her.

Stealth wasn't the goal this time, was the most the pyromancer could ascertain. There were too many of them, too flashy, and there was a giant, ugly as sin goose that was going to chauffer them into Vintergard. It was fire and war. That, was something Zelrius could get behind, as he ascended the the plank, boarding the Machine, and unable to find any particular spot he was welcomed or needed at the moment.

Come now, Kamala. She tried to compose herself with eyes closed, the memory of her past brush with the Magia at Camp Hope an embarrassment and disappointment to her. Just take deep breaths. You can redeem herself here and now. Kamala described, in her head, what she was doing as sort of like holding a giant egg between her hands, an invisible one, with each hand on either side. That or maintaining a ballerina's starting stance as she focused her magic, having channeled the mending spirit of nature, on herself and two long-time friends in the game.

❰ Heart's Illusion ❱

As the healing light, in the shade of light green, from her magic slowly dissipated at her spell's end, she watched as @Chrys and @Ayna Nietzsche opened their eyes to the real world, the effects of the illusory sanctuary that came with the spell dwindling down as well. She's heard an elf friend from Isulus that she had healed with the same spell refer to it as the "Garden of Gwyndolainn," though Kamala was not sure she knew what that meant or if the same elf was sober when she said all that. Finding yourself at death's door often tested the limits of your rationality. Most people cling tight to religiosity when they realize it could already be the end of their life's journey. Kamala could only wonder if the landers did the same.

"There. All healed up. You guys are going to be careful, right?"

Her main concern was the two members of her friend group, which was a natural instinct. In a crowd of a hundred, you always look for the faces you know first before you start helping strangers. Or you still look for the familiar souls to aid while you're already helping people you don't know. Either way, your priority will be those whose lives were always intimately intertwined with yours. Strangers won't yell at you when you fail to heal them after a battle. You might not even get to see them again right away.

Still, Kamala looked around them and watched everyone else, the new faces and the old, trying her best to remember them so she could offer aid where and when possible. The nagging anxiety of her past failures continue to gnaw at her, though, and while she tried her best to downplay the heat under her skin, she had to gulp at the thought of potentially witnessing another death or two for their side of this encounter. Just take deep breaths. We'll be fine. All of us. I hope.

As the Metal Goose was being shown to everyone who was onlooking around the area, Tetsunosuke felt wistful, as he would not see their creation like those people, but instead, he would be needed to do maintenance work on the contraption. Although he knew that he himself was to be blamed. Although he knew about the project beforehand and was one of those who designed the mechanisms of this siege engine, he had already started on his own megaproject that would replace his former mech "Takeda Shingen", which was then on its final legs of operation after the siege of Camp Hope. And so he had little input on the construction of this siege engine until halfway through which was after he had made his own mech, and now it had come to this: this one focused more on aesthetics than sturdiness, which, of course he was to be blamed on because he prioritized his own project rather than the project of the whole MIT.

And so he was here within the siege engine, slaving himself on the much needed structural integrity of the contraption. He was directing everything within the site related to its operations: from its movement down to the smithing of the much needed supports within the engine so that it could withstand the attacks from the magia that was at their front right now. He was hoping that this one would withstand just enough for them to breach the walls.

Aboard the Metal Goose, Chrys heaved a sigh of relief as @Kamala Graham finished her early preparations, over-healing him and @Ayna Nietzsche. He had barely understood what the cute nerd girl was saying as they boarded the vessel, distracted by how familiar she looked. Might've been just one of those faces... He turned to Ayna, not knowing what to tell Kamala but knowing full well that Ayna was too crazy to remain not reckless. The last time they fought together, in defense of Camp Hope, she literally sacrificed herself even though there was no need to, all to one-up her favorite friend.

"Yes... Of course... No one in here's going to be so reckless."

As far as he could tell, the only other people he knew, or at least remembered, inside of the Goose were @Zelrius and @Moonsong, the latter he knew better than the man from the Parlor. The rest did seem familiar, though to be fair, there were a lot of people during the defense of Camp Hope, and not all of them were paying him to remember their faces and names. The only reason he remembered Zelrius was because the money he got from that Parlor helped his finances while Moonsong was hot. Gotta remember the hot girls, even though something about her looked quite different. Probably just got a haircut or something.

"Anyway, let me help with the ship's maintenance..."

Chrys moved closer to the sputtering engine. Or was it something else? Chrys was not a mechanic or an engineer and had barely any basic knowledge of machines. But aren't all machines the same? Nodding at @Tetsunosuke with a solemn expression, he then kicked the damned thing like his old man used to do to the telly when it was fucking up. Chrys doesn't even own a tv anymore. Streaming was where it was at these days. Nailed it.

Tock The Twin gave one sharp look up and down to the monstrosity of a goose they had for siege machinery, right before rising one dollish hand to Tick.
"People gonna ThInCK we are sabotaging the big goose!"
"You ThInCKs so? But look at how ugly this goose is. Isn't science an art of some sorts? Well this goose ain't artistically sound whatsoever! Unless 'Practical Problems' were the name of it- Very accurate if so!"

Tick finally concluded with a swipe from her jointed hands, criss-crossing the last sparkles of magic across the head of their weapon of mass destruction that would lead them to war with fellow robo-people and bots alike. The head of it warping thanks to pure Illusionism alone, but since swapping the entirety of the Goose could be troublesome let alone costly, only the head of it would ressemble an actual goose, with a pretty pink hat and quacking noises to match... And a cold metallic body that didn't got affected whatsoever.

❰ Illusion n°1: GOOSE HEAD! ❱

With their side quest of prettyfing their transport done, and after one loud quacking sound to test it out, Tick's attention finally turned to @Hanno Futaba , the shining knight in teal who had been talking to her the whole time, mecha spider senses not missing a word as the fae worried over them, which earned a pose from the copypasted duo, carefully practiced with their backs against eachother, arthropod limbs puppeteering the magias's arms and legs to better match their MENACING pose.

"Don't worry my pointy eared knight, Tick will be careful! She has her umbrella ready for rain." Tick pointed out to the Metal contraption that was the party's Goose, spider legs moving in unison as the strings attached glowed in a dark scarlet tone, sparks coming from her hands just then.

Tock then approached, with all the clanking each step from her form brought compared to Tick's, leaning over to whisper on Hanno's ears. "She hates rain. Wet joints are the worst Tock tells you, we got a spare if you want even!" Leaning back, Tock gave a pair of nods, before both waltzed right into the machine with the rest of the group.

Tick fidgeted with her thumbs, albeit with difficulty given her own janky movements, moving all the rest of her fingers in the process. "Alright, I set up the laser eyes. The runes will fire as soon as something gets on ran-" Before that explanation could dig into the puppet's head, a loud BRRZZT came from outside, blending with the background noises of war and magi-tech alike. "Hear that? It's like fishing with a plugged toaster!"

+24 HP OVERHEALED by @Kamala Graham

Ayna felt a wave of relief during @Kamala Graham's spell as if all the weight of the world were taken off of her shoulders, only for @Chrys to dump them all back on her. How dare he make a mockery of her battle tactics?! It's not her fault she deals tons of damage in the thick of war than his thick head. What a giant piece of <basseal honk>!

"Yeah, you better run!"

Squinting as he strayed far from her reach, she caught glimpses of familiar faces in @Moonsong and @Tetsunosuke. The guy was of course very useful in her construction of the Mizar while the girl was someone she encountered during that whole fishing thing. Man, I loved that fishing thing! Alas, this was no fishing thing, and while Ayna was a captain of her own vessel, this one didn't need that from her. What the Goose needed from her was for her to kick the Magia's steel caboose.

"Anyway, I'll try not to die, Kamala, but no promises! I have full faith in your healing!"

She tried to use flattery on her friend to ease her worries as she made her way toward the exit port on the Goose's neck. It would've been much cooler to have exited through its mouth, its bill, but we use what we've got. Like a flash of lightning, Ayna zoomed out of the neck exit, more than excited to take out as many of their adversaries as she could, and with the Spear of Stormy Night (Polearm) fully charged with her lightning, she pierced through any and every thing that was in her way. They didn't even see her coming, and she was back before anyone could notice anything.

From Hanno Futaba. Overhealed.

No plaque. No visible contraptions to explain why was it that the magitech were unwilling to near the area under the statue's protection, only the knowledge that it was due to some miracle bestowed upon them by the Saint of Vintergard, and that they should be grateful for it.

It wasn't lost on her how some leaned onto it with a manner that separated itself from all others, careless touches here and there from some of the assembled Starcalled now replaced by hesitant, attentive touches and glances that spoke of stories she wasn't privy to, but that clearly held a great deal of emotion behind them all.

Color took to her cheeks as one such individual, @Hanno Futaba, suddenly called out to her, pulling her away from her early contemplations. "[ Ah... You speak too highly of me, Hanno. I assure you there is much yet to be learned, yet that shouldn't be an excuse to sit idly by. ]" What followed was a set of muffled giggles, possibly more for the sake of letting some merriment out on the eve of the siege.

The magitech had knocked on their front door and called to the Starcalled's attention.

It was simple manners to return the same attentions which they had been given, no?

And while their robot duck did not account for the dead.naught's colossal size, it was still a sight in and of itself, though feelings on it were still mixed from her perspective.

Rael found herself drawn to the task of aiding others in maintenance tasks, quickly finding that her help was more of a detriment based on sheer lack of experience with the machinery handled by MIT engineers, who warned her to keep her grabby hands off of everything she deemed as "curious". Well, that wasn't fair, considering she hadn't broken down how this thing had managed to function just yet...

What they were doing was beyond dangerous. Brazen, eager, hasty... It all spoke of how Astorea no longer wished to remain idly by as more of its land and people were lost to the invaders. And people had every right to fear the outcome of what was to come, even the storyteller herself had a hard time willing calm into her heart.

Her quill turned to a paintbrush and with the paintbrush she wove a story told through pictures and verses, retelling their hard-earned victory at Camp Hope, putting a special emphasis on its charred battlefields, how everything that had been thought lost to the Magia could be reclaimed. How, amidst flames and charred metal, it all converged into the embodiment of hope for the future of Astorea.

The future began with them.

Judging Nin

Cars were great.

That, indeed, was what she took away from the experience of riding in Nin's mecha goose. It waddled about, for one, and it was much too tall for the other. Every slip and sway of its treads over the countless bumps and potholes of the ruined former-capital caused its neck to groan as its head swung back and forth like a metronome. There was a reason while siege towers were not designed like giraffes. As an attraction at an amusement park, Cain would expect it to be a hit with the kids. They'd love how unstable it was, after all.

But as a weapon of war, and a reflection of Nin's design principles? The Flagbearer of Miracles, the Councillor of MIT folded his arms, looking up at the narrow tunnel that led up to an equally cramped head, which they would be expected to come out of. He rapped his knuckles against the side and from the noise alone, could tell just how thin the material was. A single, well-placed strike would be enough to destroy its structural integrity, and the neck itself was a literal bottleneck for any wall-breachers to climb up.

Yes.

It reflected poorly on everything of Nin's except, perhaps, for her sense of aesthetics, but regardless of how it would reflect on her performance review in the future, for now, Cain was here to do his other job. While Tetsu suffocated within the engine, perhaps the safest place from true harm, the Flagbearer himself commanded the reinforcement of the Mecha Goose's neck, calling on magitech technicians to reinforce the neck with all the extra materials that had been extracted by the Goose's saws. Slash to create planks, Nature to fortify wood, and Arcanamancy to hammer it down. It groaned still under the duress of extra mass, but so long as the head and neck could survive impacts long enough for everyone to ascend and enter safely, then that was fine.

It would be another write-off on the MIT's assets, but Cain had grown accustomed to it. Materials were temporary, after all. Consumable by nature, as was the nature of 'gold' in this world. Immortal lives, though, were not. He offered a nod or two to the supports who had woven their magic to safeguard the wall-breachers, but did not partake himself.

His was a task to ensure the siege machine itself did its job.

So that it wouldn't collapse and spark off the suicidal heroism within his friend's heart. So she wouldn't launch herself alone into the depths of Vintergard, possessed by the sickly disease that had rooted itself into her eye and holding a fallible determination in her fist.

Thus, the Flagbearer continued to command, building up the foundations of Babel so it did not collapse before it could reach the Heavens.

Too slow.

"QUACK!" Seigi couldn't help but make that noise, followed by a quick giggle. At first, she was just amazed, after all. It was a gigantic MECHA DUCK. What wasn't there to love about it!?

... Yet, it turned out to be a classic tale of form over function... wasn't it supposed to be the other way around!?Being outside the duck and fawning over its form was just, amazing. But gosh darn it was it sloooow. So, painfully, slow.

At the very least, Seigi was surrounded by people she could recognize. Most of them, anyway. She didn't try to think too hard about what would happen if they failed. Because they wouldn't. And, really, she was long past telling everybody and more 'Don't worry, I'll protect you.', 'I gotchu back', and so on.

Or maybe all this time alone made her afraid to even approach a known face like @Hanno Futaba? Maybe, deep down, she still couldn't shake this edgy bit off herself that was afraid to end up getting hurt by bonding with too many people. Just to see them dying after.

"Cain..." She spoke to @Cain Darlite. Her most trusted companion. Her very own moon. "I..." She shook her head, bumping her fists together before tightening the laces on her hoodie and pulling it a bit more down. "Take care of the others, yeah?" With these words, Seigi made for one of the exits. "And keep the duck running, too!" She added somewhat louder.

... Once outside on top of a duck wing, Seigi could feel the freedom of being very high up in the air. A sort of unique freedom she had last felt when climbing together with Mizuki. Luckily for her, most enemy Magia had already been dealt with, and whatever was left was a simple matter of rushing from one end of the goose to the other, crushing and ripping metal from metal while keeping a lookout for any additional danger.

Though she couldn't help but be in awe for just a second as she witnessed the ducks head having shifted form to something more biological. "Woah...!"

After making sure everyone was on board and every name was checked off in a OCD-like manner. Nin put away her clipboard and tried her best to not bump into anyone. It was difficult. She had not designed the goose to hold so many. Of course, Nin was often tossed a pile of tasks and expected to supply results. Nin had gone from a nobody to a major instrument in MIT but now... it was certainly becoming an exhausting affair. Even when she did indeed like the scholarly aspects ts of her job.

Nin was built for labs, not warfronts!

When a member of the Lions, @Hanno Futaba inquired about the goose's capabilities, Nin would raise her brows.

"The body is fortified twice over and tested under multiples of explosives. The neck and head are less so (she glances at @Cain Darlite) it is, however, highly flexible and will extend to easily dispatch your unit onto the city walls."

Her eyes fell upon his shield and she adjusted her glasses.

"Hm? That is an interesting addition. Would you be interested in donating it to science?"

As the Mecha Goose advanced, it rocked under the attacks of the enemy. Seeing she was needed elsewhere the mathematician moved on from Hanno and supervised the maintenance.

"Everyone, stay on target! The equation is less complex than it appears. 234x43=1062! We are right on schedule! No need to match velocities with those Magi-steeds. Slow and steady arithmetic shall prevail!"

Each of the Starcalled did their part and with a carefully calculated pace. The Mecha Goose reached its destination.

The Mecha Goose's lengthy neck extended and the crew set for maintenance now swapped to operating a magitech weapon stored in the rear of the great steel bird. Clearing out enemies that approached the now motionless machine. Thankfully, the efforts of the party had been more than enough. The rear had been thoroughly cleared of opposition, for now.

The team exited with Nin following but staying close to her precious goose. What lay before the raid team was a grand view of their once capital city. Now piles of rubble and mangled steel. A city once championed as the prize of the Starcalled for many trials and tribulations, destroyed in a single night.

Those who came here to scout, to escort, or perhaps even those who came here that one lonely summers night... now it was time to take it back. Restore the order that was lost and the status quo of the Traveler's reign over this land. The question of whether it was rightfully theirs is up to historians to decide.

"This is the end of my responsibilities. I will stay here and offer support by the Mecha Goose (she stared hard at @Seigi Ling Ling. Then rubbing her head a moment Nin sighed and looked at her notes. Yes there was something she had to add). ...the mission statement says to take as much of this area back as possible. However, I have been informed that an additional variable is in play. Within the Vintergard palace is a Magia Forge unlike any other. You are also to destroy that machine at all costs. Unfortunately, details are scarce but it would be greatly beneficial for us to end its operations. King Astor also would be very appreciative to have the palace reclaimed."

Nin made a frown as she mentioned his name. Shaking her head at what she had just said, bureaucrats just weren't her thing either. Why Cain Darlite was not given this information, was also beyond her.

They gathered...
The sound of clanking metal and piercing sirens as the Sentries emerged along with an infamous Overseer. They looked to have been distracted by something and only now arrived on the scene. Just as was reported. The Overseer had strange fluid on its limbs, Showing that it had collected recently. It would not be long before the Regulators arrived, and...

Blasts of pure energy suddenly sprayed against the walls in an attempt to prevent your team's advance. The enemy had actual gunners in their ranks! Magitech soldiers in the purest sense. The soldiers at this point had only been seen at a distance during the raid of Camp Hope. They used the terrain to their advantage hoping to flank you and deliver deadly headshots. Now they personally take to the field to defend their territory.

First Dragonshear, then the Astorean Palace itself and its mysterious forge await you...
It's time Starcalled, face the Magia stronghold, and reclaim your land!

Astor.

That catfucker.

Cain could understand now, why Gwyn always had a chip on her shoulder regarding the Golden King. For all the power he held, Astor lacked the communication skills that great leaders had, seemingly having fumbled into his position through cosmic coincidence. Who of his court persisted now? Roland had tried to usurp him. Alonso and Gwyn wanted nothing to do with him. Seto had been missing for days now, and even Levi, the man who willingly burdened himself with the defense of an entire nation, appeared heavily at odds with him. An unpopular King, and now one that was foisting on further responsibilities on an already volatile situation.

And really.

"At all cost?" Cain smiled. "Fuck that. If the star turn calamitous, I trust you to prioritize your own retreat. Someone needs to deliver the news, and if we don't return, don't try to finish what we left behind."

It was always about safety. Always about prioritizing lives over virtualized property. Perhaps he didn't have enough emotional bandwidth to care that much about the lives of those who weren't UI-locked, but so what? For those who weren't trapped in this game, Terrasphere was a game. If they lost, they weren't obligated to give their lives up to the cause. Falderen stood tall still. Tertoria had true powerhouses at their beck and call. Astorea was just a place. Vintergard was just a memory.

And a life lost to save a life was still a net loss, composed of the survivor's guilt.

The Magia gathered…

…and the Flagbearer raised his hand.

Shadow in shadow, fates severed and rebound. Twas the substance of spatial darkness, enough to snuff out the light of stars. Twas the substance of celestial cosmos, enough to glorify even moonless nights. Twas the Battle-Banner of the Fated Fall, whether it be upon his foes or his allies. Let the machines do what they could, to hold onto the blighted land they stole.

If they keep it, they earned it. But if they lose it?

A whisper, wrathful, and the reverie of apocalypse reciprocated resounded as Cain swung his flagstaff, the astral banner unfurling with a supernovaeic crack! Golden light, the stuff of shattered stars, spilled into the armaments of the blessed, their emotions heightened even as their thoughts crystallized!

"@Seigi Ling Ling, @Ayna Nietzsche! The Regulators are the greatest threats present! Tear them asunder before they can release even a single bolt of energy, one a piece! @Hanno Futaba, show me what that Dissonant shield of yours can do! Pin down the Overseer so that others can rip it apart as we did the last!"

The Flagbearer took one step forward, the first to press into the scorched, drained earth, his voice brimming with a savageness unlike his eloquent garb.

"We'll annihilate them all in one fell swoop!"

The city mattered little. Restoration or pride or fond memories, Tick had none for the ruined pinnacle of the Starcalled. Mere rubble and broken memories for some. No, what did get her ears to perk and amber eyes (Did the ones that looked more like gems on her hair and forehead just move? Yes the did, barely so at that) all locked on Nin with the mention of a Magia Forge.

'Well well well!' That does sound promising, far more than the prospect of reclaiming some dull, dead ol' soil!

Past these walls, Tick rushed over behind one of the many ruined structures of the city, climbing through debris to reach a better position for her to call the shots, the duo running in all their janky glory, these legs on her head certainly working overtime, or the spider that was hiding in her hairs? Hard to tell at plain view, with not a single hint of metal on the organic surface of these legs. Despite the clumsy lack of mobility they had, the pair moved in complete sync past fallen walls and debris to take advantage of a broken down house, an advantageous point.

"So what are we playing?" Tock asked, a hand supporting her head as she leaned against cracked stone and bricks.
"Tag, it's been a while since we did that one!" Tick quickly replied, couping her hands over her face, mimicking a pair of binoculars while mechanical eyes flickered, zooming in like surveillance cameras to get a better view of the defensive measures they've taken to hinder the group. "Ah, I know! Tock, I'll borrow this for a second!" Her hand quickly stretched out towards her twin, energy pulling out from within the core inside her torso as life begun to pour out of the only source available right now given nature's absence. A black mass, void in colour and light alike escaped from the corrupted orb within Tock, and Tick suddently let it drop across the floor.

Vantablack lifeforce took the shape of flames as it begun to crawl across the terrain at incredible speed, alike a serpent chasing after prey instead of waiting for it. It sought after a target, and a target it found past the lines of sentry bots and straight into the Overseer, engulfing it. Consuming it.

Rotting it away as if flesh it were, or the erosion of the ocean sped up a million times against rock, it fastened itself around it's prey, before spreading like chains formed out of a blaze across the air, connecting each sentry with it.

"Tag!" Tick sealed her hand into a fist, crushing a rune like it were glass, and every sentry begun to wither away, the metal eaten like acid until nothing but embers of her deed remained within the fallen husks.

And the pair shared a high five to celebrate it!

"No matter how long you fight on, there is still a lot to learn." He nodded in agreement to @Rael's words, raising an eyebrow at @Tick Tock's goose, certainly something that outclassed the shape of their own gigantic construct, ready for the battle.

At Nin's question, he paused and gave it a thought. "Ghast as a whole, I can't. But I could donate a tentacle or two, they regenerate, after all." Hanno smirked at Nin (@Pandora*), and Ghast squinted at him, slapping his face with a top tentacle before looking away. "Ow, come on, you can grow these things all the time." He protested, moving on to the battle that was soon to come.

Rushing into the combat, Hanno glared up at the Overseer, watching the disruptive attack of @Tick Tock, already making it tilt to the side while @Cain Darlite reinforced the team, giving a firm nod to the flagbearer. "Alright buddy. Hey, Ghast! Cain wants you to show what you are off-" He hitted the shield, and she rumbled before a small faerin girl, with a tentacle as a 'tail' merged out of it, making the shield go back to its mundane shape.

Grabbing her, Hanno took a deep breath before tossing her up toward the Overseer, and her arms soon morphed into tentacles that stretched to glue on its surface, making her attach to its head.

"Thank you for the help, big bro, big sis!" She smiled at @Cain Darlite and @Tick Tock, trying to hold on tight at the Overseer, turning to face its glowing blue lens that were the 'eyes', licking her lips with her scaly tongue. "I don't like the taste of Magia, but Hanno told me I need more iron in my diet!"

"Hanna is biiiiig!"
She giggled, squeezing the Overseer's crab head in a hug and taking a big bite of it before her form began melting in an evergrowing amalgamation of giant tentacles and eyes-

The tentacles wrapped around the face of the Overseer, 'blinding' it while wrapping around the appendages of the giant robot, sinking them deep into the ground to try and force it down to a vulnerable state.

"Time to charge, but be careful! These Overseers like to self-destruct when they feel too cornered!" Hanno called, raising his now, mundane and newbie-looking shield, and imbuing it with a protective power before shoving it on the ground, creating a divine dome around Tick Tock, @Moonsong and @Tetsunosuke, who were all near the huge construct.

The others had made short work of attacking the approaching machines that inched ever closer to the giant steel bird now guiding them closer and closer to the wall. Blasting and attacking in all directions, reaving them to dust and particles. Nin was giving them encouragement. They had one hell of a team here, with healers, and tanks, even people he didn't recognize were more than pulling their own weight. This was beginning to seem easier and easier - really doable.

The team disembarked atop the wall, Zelrius turning to listen to Nin's small debrief. There wasn't anything to add, other than the fact that he could confirm that forge's existence. "And it is crawling with Magia. Some with these strange tendril arms." Finally able to offer some useful information about their goals here, and what lay ahead. It wasn't that long ago that he had trekked into the heart of the city and found Jester. Still, the girl didn't mention anything about what to do with this supposed Feminine-shaped Magia that the other team had seen with their vision. That would be a problem for another time, and one he wouldn't raise concern of now.

---

Tick broke the cycle of Silence, her spidery head and weird Sister thing scuttling forward to bash around the Sentries. Less Bashing, more - letting them turn to dust, to accelerate their mechanized to the very end, where they'd wither and crumble. Nothing more than dust in the wind now. That was a strangely creepy way to go, Zelrius thought to himself.

Just as in the fight with the Basilisk, @Cain Darlite was swift to begin throwing out strategy and orders. It was welcomed, the focus on the regulators and the general plan. Kept people from guessing too much, from flandering. The mage was always good at things like that, and was daring with it.

@Tick Tock 's questions about his hair, and then indication of the Overseer gave Zelrius his target before someone else had the chance. Hanno had wrapped it in a mess of tendrils, locking the bigger machine down, and holding it hostage. That was his moment.

His volcanic swords were drawn, and the plume of fire was left in his wake of each rushing step. One sword went up in an arch, and then down. "Melt, machine!" He commanded it, sending his heat through the blade, and letting its form erupt in flame. Before he pulled back and spun to dodge any retaliation, sinking the other blade down, and letting his flames course through whatever innards it had, spreading from the center. Focusing on weakening whatever it had for circuitry and parts inside of there.

@Hanno Futaba 's advice fell on deaf ears, as Zelrius charged in.

"This place always seems different no matter how often I visit it..." Seigi mumbled to herself as the duck breached the walls and she climbed from the wings to its very head, before jumping down to the rest of the group.

By now, the enemy army had assembled likewise, just for half of it to be nuked by a gadget of Tick Tock. In fact, Seigi hadn't paid too much attention to the... what was she even? A puppet? A spider? Just hair? Yet she had already taken off before Seigi could say anything... for now.

Instead, her attention was now directed at Cain and Hanno. Seeing the tentacle shield only stirred her own dissonant tendency, and for a moment she recalled the lingering anger and how she just wanted to absolutely crush Robomama to pieces. But all in due time.

Encouraged by @Cain Darlite words, Seigi carefully tapped @Ayna Nietzsche shoulder. "Cain is right! Buuuuut they also seem to be under super duper annoying cover fire!" Of course, at that moment, an energy bullet flew past the group, barely grazing their hair as if to make a point. "So I say: You take on the right one and I cover you?... And by cover, I obviously mean to absolutely turn them ready for the junkyard!" .... Not really waiting for an answer too long, Seigi started running. Past Zelrius burning flames and most certainly past @Tick Tock.

"Hey I don't know you, and this may sound crazy, but here I'm thinking you're absolutely awesome, maybe!" That was all the spider girl got to hear as Seigi moved further into the ruined city, dodging some laser shots while run-ducking to cover for some others.

"This isn't a bullet hell!" Seigi cried out, as she jumped over a bigger pile of debris that two Sentinels were hiding behind. Too slow to raise their weapons in time, Seigi already landed on one of them, making him fall down and sitting on his chest as she quite literally punched through his chassis and ripped out whatever she could get her hands on. "Just shut off or something!"

At that moment, however, the other Sentinel took a shot. And while Seigi tried to dodge by ducking under it, she ultimately got hit. "Urgh... now you've done it!" Putting all power in her legs, the girl managed a quick dash tackle, crushing the second gunner against a wall further away and ripping off both his arms, followed by the head.

... There really wasn't much finesse behind her moves, just raw strength.

*the ruling was that Seigi only takes reta from any surviving gunner. However, the flat damage fuels her berserk which was enough to kill the second one, so it was ruled she takes the damage but kills both.
