Operation: Siren Silence
Cycle 5 - Maelstrom

The tide came.

And she came to meet it.

Cepheid (@Jester) charged forth, the gravity of a dying star building up within her staff, spewing ectoplasm from the injuries she inflicted upon herself to call forth the sheer bounty of Dark Magic that laid within her. Only in absence of all, only in desperation and madness, could such taboo magics truly flourish. And beyond that, the Photoprophet could feel it. Another frenetic energy building up in her legs. Legs that she hadn't used the entire day, legs now bursting at the seams from the death-sprint she pushed herself towards! Through opulence she ran, a black hole as her bludgeon!

One step, airborne.

One swing, all-consuming.

A speck of black warped the form of the God-Searing Light. An all-encompassing effort. An incremental result. For black holes were not so mighty in the face of weapon meant to extinguish the immortal. And as Cepheid defied a force that surpassed sensation, she could see it all. Every bit of her bodied buried in light, consumed by light, extinguished by light. Hers was the candle, tossed into the Sun.

She was vapour before she was flame.

The tide remained unabated. The all-extinguishing force, reducing stonework to dust, erasing the opulence that had remained untouched up until now. Memorabilia and finery became shadows against the ground, and the roar of the maelstrom rang above all, destruction triumphing over civilization as it sought to sweep away the meteors fleeing from it!

A sacrifice had to be made to stall it. A sacrifice had to be made to protect all others.

A sacrifice? Nay. An effort.

Only fools offered their lives so cheaply. Heroes struggled to the end, up to the last iota of their consciousness, and @Nyancy was undoubtedly such a hero! Ocean waves converged upon the finely-honed edge of her sword, drawn from the very clouds in the sky. She was the Beastlord Champion, heir to the primordial might of that ancient berserker, and that might burned as fuel for her magic, water compressing to physics-defying levels. And when the tide came, the ocean answered, that lion-faced valiant driving a waterfall into that godless light.

Instantly, it vaporized, an explosion of steam scalding the skin off her body. She buckled against the agony, exposed nerves screaming out, but before the pain overrode her will, a squall pushed her back from behind, driving a tunnel through the steam. @Aerial, lacking all the capabilities of a warrior but possessing all the qualities of a hero, had answered with a spear blessed by storm, whipping up the ocean into ever-greater frenzy. The tides, the light, descended upon them despite all their efforts, and yet, their combined efforts stalled its advance, their souls unbreakable even as their bodies failed them.

For even as they turned into shadows, they became bulwarks, parting the tides so that those behind them felt only the kiss of heat against their flesh as the separated around them. Robbing them of air. Robbing them of sight.

But not robbing them of their lives.

The tide washed over all, even as those who chose to escape escaped beyond the limits of speed itself. Machines that they were, Magisteeds were nevertheless susceptible to the limitations that all things of the world were. When duress became too much to withstand, when they pushed on despite that, they were liable to break.

In @Madison Freebird's ears, it was the snapping of a twig, a forward lurch.

King Halo's body broke down, the aftershock of that all-effacing light toppling over the delicate house of cards they had maintained to keep every part of their body in running shape. Joints snapped, gears splintered, magitech sparked, and before their Core turned critical, they hurled their rider off. Shadows coalesced around the Sheriff, the last shreds of magic in her steed sending her ever forward.

Forward to @Schilva Flasch, to Twin Turbo Kai Ni.

There was no time for emotions, not even as the solitary explosion of King Halo reached her ears. She was without hesitation. She was possessed by only the desire to survive. And she grasped the blade-sharp frame of her ally's steed. Felt it slice into her bones, held on despite that. Held on because of that. For pain kept her awake, and pain reminded her that she lived still, even as all other senses were consumed by light!

Consumed for an eternity.

Consumed for an instant.

The light faded, and what remained of the squadron leapt off the Dragonshear, finally breaking line of sight with that mechanical sunflower. Riders without steeds. Steeds without riders. All exhausted, fatigued. Unbroken but bruised, driven to the brink but not off the edge. In the shadows of the Dragonship's wing, with Camp Hope so close, they caught their breath, tended to what wounds they could. @Cynna, healthy despite all else, scouted upwards, her Shadow Arts aiding her in the mission, and confirmed, at least, that while the cannon above the Ruined Palace was still there, still facing southwards, it remained inert as well, no longer gathering any more energy. The weapon had a range after all. This far away, it could neither draw energy from them, nor retaliate against them!

It was a cold comfort.

At this range, they had no hope of striking at it either. They had fought so hard to slay the trio of Emergency Response, and at the end of that, the Magia of the Dragonship simply revealed that they had yet another ace in their hand.

But it was better, perhaps, that they found out now, rather than when they marched to Vintergard en masse.

Slowly, they gathered themselves, for their return home. There was much to be reported. Of their losses. Impermanent for some. Permanent for others. @Jin knew this the most. Knew that Jester had been UI-locked. Knew that she had been converted once already, that it was on the whims of an incomprehensible machine-deity that she was remade rather than erased. Knew too, that one could not revive an individual if there was nothing left of them. Would he bear the message for Zelrius, or would he keep quiet? Was it better for a beautiful memory to persist, or a tragic end to be relayed?

Such thoughts were interrupted, however, by Event Horizon flinging him off.

The cosmic steed, space made substantial, trotted up to Aes and kicked that steed too, knocking @Valmont off. The bespectacled Magia tumbled upon the ground, and when he pushed himself up, he could see the galactic eyes of Event Horizon staring into his own.

Eyes, stars, blinking out. One by one by one, as that cosmic brilliance sloughed off the Magisteed's frame, exposing the Magicore Engine beneath. It pulsated with an unshaking dignity, a deathless resolve, and it...shone with an astral light. Space folded upon itself, amethyst light sparking as entropy invaded the universe that was Event Horizon.

A portal was made. A portal inside the Core.

And inside that laid the last mark of Cepheid's existence: a droplet of blue. Ectoplasm, viscous.

They had ran so far, so fast. But ten minutes had yet to elapse.

Cycle 5 Damage

  • The God-Searing Light has gathered the life force of all applicable targets. With 7 Magisteeds and 8 Starcalled fueling its core, it releases a global 150 Damage attack.
  • Cepheid (@Jester) Faces the Storm. With an Average Mastery Check (Dynamicism 74), she reduces the God-Searing Light's base damage by 30, to 120 Damage, before receiving 480 HP damage. Naught but memories remain.

  • At Zone 10, 60 HP Damage is zonally applied, due to Damage Mitigation by Distance. However...
  • @Nyancy and @Aerial Cleave the Tides for a combined result of 340. Under normal circumstances, 420 HP Damage would be split equally between Thunderstruck, Aes, Rice Shower, Mayano Top Gun, Cynna, Jin and Valmont, but 340 has been cleaved off of it, leaving only 80 HP Damage to be split between the 7 eligible targets. As such....
  • @Cynna, @Jin, Thunderstruck, Aes, Rice Shower, and Mayano Top Gun receive 12 HP Damage.
  • @Valmont, Protected by Aes, receives 5 HP Damage.

  • @Nyancy, who does not receive any damage reduction benefits (Zonal Protection, Protected, Ultra Counter Damage Reduction), receives 90 HP Damage after her 30 HP Overshield is consumed. Rain falls, but will rise once more.
  • @Aerial, who does not receive any damage reduction benefits (Zonal Protection, Protected), receives 120 HP Damage. She has become as the wind.

  • At Zone 16, 24 HP Damage is zonally applied, due to Damage Mitigation by Distance. @Madison Freebird, protected by King Halo, receives 12 HP Damage, while King Halo shelters her from the Self-Destruct Sequence after receiving 24 HP Damage.
  • At Zone 18, 12 HP Damage is zonally applied, due to Damage Mitigation by Distance. @Schilva Flasch receives 6 HP damage, protected by Twin Turbo Kai Ni, who receives 12 HP Damage.

Magi-Steed Details

These Magi-steeds were based off of the personalities of six legendary horses, enabling them to act upon their rider's instructions with little need for monitoring. However, these same personalities cause particular habits to form when moving, which may either positively or negatively affect the rider and the steed.

When selecting a Magi-steed, choose one of the below Personalities to apply to them and note it down in your Magi-steed Sheet. Note that you may name your Magi-steed whatever you wish.

  • Twin Turbo:Reckless and possessing tremendous energy, Twin Turbo releases everything immediately, and will always seek to reach the front of the pack, regardless of consequences.
    • All Out, Always: When making a Speed Check, gain a +5 bonus, which is reduced by 1 for every Cycle that passes. A bonus action can be used to cancel the reduction.
  • King Halo: Granted a soul that would not be overcome regardless of loss, King Halo runs with their head held proudly, resilient in the face of tribulation.
    • Noblesse Oblige: Speed Checks are unaffected by melee attacks received from the prior cycle. When Magi-steed HP is reduced to 0, does not damage the rider upon explosion.
  • Shinko Windy:A steed with a teasing sense of humor and an explosive fighting spirit, Shinko Windy bares their teeth with the ferocity of a lion, always happy to charge into the fray.
    • Habitual Biter: Rider's melee damage increases by +20, as the Magi-steed supports them. If not in melee range, will drop Speed in order to enter the next non-empty Zone.
  • Seeking the Pearl: Star-studded and glamorous, Seeking the Pearl is most at home in the unknown, leaping into dangers without fear and possessing an unmatched self-confidence.
    • Quixotic Wanderings: Magi-steed receives half-damage from environmental effects, and if their natural save modifier is lower than 25, roll saves with advantage instead.
  • Rice Shower: An assassin, a pursuer, Rice Shower possesses the dogged determination to follow behind her target, no matter where they may go, whether it be front, back, or center.
    • Heel or Hero?: At the Start of Combat, choose a target, whether enemy or ally. When making Speed Checks, roll three times. The one closest to the Target is selected. A bonus action must be used to set a new Target for the next cycle.
  • Mayano Top Gun:The miraculous all-rounder genius of running, Mayano Top Gun has all the faults and merits of a prodigy, capable of absolute domination...but only when they feel like it.
    • Kaleidoscopic Prodigy: Rather than making a Speed Check, roll a 1d3 instead. On a 1, their Speed is 1 above the highest Speed Check. On a 2, their Speed is 2 below the highest Speed Check. On a 3, their Speed is 3.

These Magi-steeds must intake the biometrics of their rider before they accept them upon their back. With a drop of blood (or whatever Magia bleed out), the forms of the Magi-steeds are contorted further, activating various attributes and abilities, as well as gaining a 'form that best matches the aesthetics of their rider.'

When inputting your biometrics into your chosen Magi-steed, select one Mastery to be input. In return, the Magi-steed gains...

  • HP: Matches the HP of the rider, excluding passives that give HP bonuses.
  • As One: Passive. Rider and steed are treated as one when making saves or when taking damage.
  • Guardianship: Passive. While the steed's HP is above zero, the rider is Protected.
  • Self Destruct: Passive. When the steed's HP reaches zero, the steed explodes, dealing 75 flat damage to the rider and 150 flat damage to every enemy target in the zone after a Speed Check is made.
  • Steering: Free Action. The rider can adjust the steed's Speed Check by a value of Base Movement/2, rounding up. This value takes to account passives, but not buffs or bonus actions.
  • Drafting: Bonus Action. All allies behind the steed move one Zone further.
  • ???: To be determined after a Mastery is input.

@Aerial - Shinko Windy – Aeromancy
FALLSTREAK HOLE – Action. Perform Steering, but apply to all individuals within the Zone, moving them a number of Zones equal to Base Movement/2, including passives but excluding bonus actions and buffs. Shinko Windy can choose which ones are moved forwards and which are moved backwards.

@Jin – Famine – Hemomancy
BLOOD IS FUEL – Famine does not Protect Jin, but their HP bars are fused together. Every time 25% of Max HP is lost, can choose to deal 100 flat damage to all enemies within the current zone as a Bonus Action. If done so, reduce Max HP by 25%. When HP hits zero, Jin is ejected at 1 HP and spared the subsequent Self-Destruction.

@Nyancy – Mayano Top Gun – Weapon Arts
PERFECT CONDITION – Once Per Challenge. Mayano Top Gun gets serious. Instead of rolling a Speed Check, choose which Zone to be in. If this is Zone 10, your Speed for determining the fastest horse is considered to be Infinite. Double your MR and WR and gain an Overshield of 30 for this cycle and the next.

@Madison Freebird – King Halo – Shadow Arts
MIDNIGHT WATCH – Bonus action. King Halo summons shadowy sceptres behind it, granting boons to allies or rider. The number of sceptres equals the Speed Check made at the start of the cycle, and each sceptre can grant either a stackable +5 damage modifier, a stackable +5 Overshield, or a stackable +1 range to any ally behind King Halo.

@Cynna – Rice Shower – Shadow Arts
LET'S ELOPE – Once Per Challenge, at any time, Rice Shower can choose any of her unselected Speed Checks and transport her target and herself to the Zone in question. If the target is an enemy, increase all damage dealt to them on this turn by 20. If the target is an ally, reduce all damage dealt to them in the following damage cycle by 20.

@Schilva Flasch – Twin Turbo Kai Ni – Dynamism
SCHILVA, GO! – Once per Challenge. Must be declared before any rolls. Twin Turbo is set to Zone 1, and Schilva is flung off the Magisteed, shooting through Zone 1 to Zone 1d10. Damage dealt by Schilva this cycle is dealt to all valid targets within the range of his flight. At the end of his turn, Schilva takes Zones Traveled x 10 HP damage and is considered unmounted.

@Jester – Event Horizon – Astramancy
FUTURE BRIDGE – Action. Event Horizon folds space around it, creating a two-way warp hole between the Zone in front of it and the Zone behind it. When allies and enemies enter one of the warped Zones, they may choose to be immediately transported into the other warped Zone. When certain enemy attacks enter one of the warped Zones, there is a 40% chance that they will be sucked up and transported into the other warped Zone, thus avoiding the Zone in between.

@Valmont - Aes - Arcanamancy
STAINLESS HEART - Action. Aes, composed of Arcanamantic clockwork, swaps out its internal workings with another Magisteed within range, subsequently swapping Magisteed HP values. When this is done, recover 1d20 of Aes's HP afterwards, up to its Max HP. If the HP swapped is greater than Aes's MAX HP, gain the excess HP as Overshield.

In this Challenge, mounted movement is the only way one can hope to catch up with Emergency Response. The temperamental nature of the Magi-steeds, as well as the Starcalleds' own limited experience with mounted combat, means that it's not possible to move with the same accuracy that one would with their own two feet.

As such, a Speed Check is made at the start of every cycle to determine which Zone your Magi-steed brings you to, before you are able to modulate that positioning with your bonus action. After positioning is settled, one may use remaining actions as they please to target enemies or allies within their range.

  • The dice to roll for a Speed Check is a 1d10.
  • Each melee attack you receive will reduce your next Speed Check by 1.
  • If your Magi-steed makes the highest Speed Check after applying all Magi-steed abilities, you gain infinite range for your actions on the next cycle. For the purposes of Hyper Awareness's damage buff, this means you gain a +60 damage buff. Alternatively, you can have infinite range attacks count as melee.
  • For the purposes of Momentum damage, treat your Speed Check before applying Magi-steed abilities as your Movement.
  • If your Magi-steed is destroyed, you must make a DC 80 Reflex Save to jump onto the back of someone else's Magi-steed. That individual must be within two Zones of youon the cycle before your Magi-steed was destroyed. You will no longer be Protected.
    • Failing that, someone else on the next Cycle, if they arrive within two Zones of you, can use their Action to pick you up.
    • Failing that, one of two things can happen. If you have the Speed passive, roll a 1d4 for your Speed Check and continue your turn as normal. If you do not have the Speed passive, or your Speed Check has been reduced to negatives due to melee attacks received, you are considered to be out of this challenge, but not dead.

That fool of a girl!
Rage billowed inside of Valmont. Head bowed he gripped the reins of Aes like a vice, knuckles white against the dark leather. His shoulders shook with anger, and sorrow, each fighting to gain purchase. All of his focus was dedicated to a section of his HUD, where three red names tracked time. Three personal failures, almost four. He lifted his head to the sky, ready to rail against the world that put him in this situation. Until a hoof caught him in the side.

He hit the ground in a spray of mud, hand snapped to his hip and he drew his sidearm to blast away that damned horse. To take out his rage on the first thing to piss him off. But something stayed his hand. He saw the spatial construct, saw its intent, saw that it knew something that he didn’t. He saw that single mote of essence floating there, waiting, and he had a thought. This world is a game. A game was built on systems, mechanics, concepts. Really, what was the limit of Resurrection? There was time, everyone knew that. It was right in the skill description. But that was it… Right?

9

The difference between those at the top, and those at the bottom isn’t experience. It isn’t equipment. It’s power. Here, the world has given me more power than I could ever hope for. It’s time to stop playing the game. Time to start abusing it.
”When did I become such a coward?” He whispered to the sky.
He got up, dusting himself off. Raising his right hand he flicked through a few sub-menus. He looked at his inventory, a cavernous warehouse of materials and prototypes. From within its depths he produced a new Octahedron. Instead of being like the small pool-ball sized constructs he’d been using until now, this one was the size of a man’s torso. It hovered silently next to him, a sentinel of magitech. Plates of bronze dazzling in the sunlight, bathing the area in a warm glow. ”Congratulations, 6, you’ve been called to a higher purpose, eh?” He patted its side, leaving a hand print on the mirror-finish surface. Of course the soulless construct didn’t respond, it didn’t even have a single thought rattling around in that cavernous space it used for memory. A perfect shell.

He reached out towards Event Horizon, and created a small diamond-like structure around the mote of Cepheid. Crystalline blue faceted panels alternating between cold cobalt and spectral amethyst. ”Sorry I don’t have a better catalyst, but you can’t regrow a machine.” He said to it before slotting it into the core of ‘6’. Once it was secured in a spot that was meant for something else he stepped back. With a thought he powered on the mechanisms that generated the healing lights, overcharging them in the special way necessary for resurrection. Then he pulled his mind out of the construct, letting his threads of Arcanamantic anchors dissolve and handed the resurrection process off to The System. It would screw him, or it wouldn’t. For now, the clock was ticking.

7

The other two were actually far more simple of a puzzle. MIT and The System had given him the tools he needed, Event Horizon had given him the keys. Aes. Specifically, Aes’ ability to swap internals with the other mounts. A being blended of his own Arcanamancy, Valmont had complete control over the internal mechanism of his mount. Last time he’d used the Stainless Heart function he had specifically avoided taking the core of the other mount. Now he wanted the opposite, to target only the mote of biomass within Thunderstruck and Mayano.

6

With excruciating care he worked with Aes. Time was ticking down but he wasn’t going to rush it. One by one he swapped internals with each of the other horses, then took his time to work the blood out of Aes’ internal mechanisms, saving as much as he could in the process. When he was finished he shelled them in crystal containers like he had for Cepheid.

1

At the last he activated the healing routines on his last Octahedron, beginning the revival process for the other two. At last he handed the reins off to The System, letting it deal with the repercussions of his decisions. Let the damn computer figure out all of the hard parts. His knees gave out as the stress began to leave his body and he dropped to sit on the ground. Waves of exhaustion washed over him from the long day. He was spent. He didn’t even have adrenaline left in the tank to run with.

"Well, aren't we a sorry bunch."

Cynna dryly laughed out a sigh as she looked the group over with a quick eye before turning back to watch the t-shirt cannon responsible for a handful of her squad wearing 'dead' on their status. Cynna was the opposite of that "I'm a healer, but" meme, she could handle first aid to keep others swinging, but deep down she was a fighter, so the tricky stuff... well... she was just more than a little happy @Valmont was here.

As the good doctor worked, Cynna continued to scout, peeking over the ridge while watching for anymore 'fast but not as fast as those other guys responders'. Rice Shower continued to support her in this mission as a stepping stool this time.

"Mt. Asskicker over there seems quiet, so it looks like we're fine. For now, anyway. Shame we can't return the favor..."

Another sigh. All the winding up had left Cynna a little tired. Satisfied, but tired.

"Guess I'll play mapmaker for now, if MIT ever decides to get off their butts and build a bigger cannon with more range than that one, they'll be thanking me for the fresh topography and coords..."

Cynna didn't expect much to come of that, but she was feeling antsy and she knew that when she got antsy, if she didn't do SOMETHING then she'd often do something stupid instead...

At the end of her resurrection, Cepheid's body existed once more, and her eyes began to glow a bright yellow now with added sparks of bright, neon blue here and there. They looked down to take note of her new form, happy she didn't need that gaudy disguise to be revived as well. She could find some new rags once they all got back to camp. More important to her was taking note of the new addition of bronze cracks spanning her whole body.

Speaking of they, the robot now looked to the healer. At least he seemed to be the one reviving people with those floating contraptions. Yeah, he was helping her protect those horsies earlier.

"Right, you were the second to last when it came to introductions." She gave his shoulder a couple firm pats, probably a bit too hard--not like, King Darunia hard, but definitely still on the Richter scale of pats. "I owe thee and thy machines, and of course their revival functions." And then she went on to count heads.

Rabbit, Cat, Lightning girl... When did I get so bad at remembering people's names? I used to do this for a living, for crying out loud! And okay, that's Schilva, and-...

She saw Jin and looked down at him, and her eyes seemed to flicker a couple of times as though blinking.

"Thanks for holding onto that parting message for me." She put a hand out to him to offer him up, if he wanted. Meanwhile, her other hand made the motion of taking something from behind his ear, like some old-fashioned magician. "But Death wants not the knell soaked in sap and irony. You understand, don't you? It was the wisest thing to do!"

Her death effect had mistimed, and she wasn't about to mope about being alive. Instead, she had horsies to count. Jin's had already been a casualty of this battle even before Jester, but she would properly pay respects once the headcount was squared away properly. After all, who else would offer funeral rites for a couple of robot, or a couple of animals, much less a couple of robot animals?

It seemed they had only lost one other... but, that didn't add up. Cepheid counted again. And again. And once more, before she met the hollow eyes of a horse she had just noticed behind her, whose core was open. That connection from before, it was gone. That meant her mental link with Event Horizon had ended. But, Jin was still alive, so clearly Event Horizon had also survived. Then why was it powered down, while others were not?

Despite her practice in Dynamism, she took just as long as most anyone else in her shoes would have to put everything together. After all, she had just been recreated by Valmont's magitech. That meant her essence had to have been somewhere--she was a professional at dying by now, so she knew it wasn't a matter of just wishing someone was still around--and that a minor mental link had been the least of what she shared with her steed on this day.

"... Horizon."

"......... Hey... Horizon...!"
Cepheid paused for a moment as she both literally and figuratively processed everything. "... Must every yellow-brick road end paved in the mouth of regret?" The false prophet put her hand to her chest where she still insisted that some sort of heart was, then steeled herself into making a decision arguably just as selfish as it seemed selfless at first glance.

Her metal hand decorated with soldered cracks of bronze plunged into the magisteed's heart as she prayed it would do even half as much for it as it had done for her.

"I'm not leaving you behind again. We're not through with each other just yet."

SCHILVA FLASCH
22 / 145

TWIN TURBO KAI NI[ 24/125 ]

Combat Log:
-6HP from GOD SEARING LIGHT (Schilva)
-12HP
from GOD SEARING LIGHT (TWIN TURBO KAI NI)

Status:
Crispy | A bit overdone

The sky itself seemed to open, not so much scattering as vomiting pure light over Schilva, overwhelming all senses for but an instant. Then, rip-roaring wind in his ears and whipping of air over his skin brought him back to the world of the living, conscious again that his steed was rushing him away from the sweeping wave of destruction that even now dogged the retreat of the Starcalled.

Three figures among them, three true heroes wheeled about and raced towards the conflagration instead of away from it. Their minds were already set, there was no changing that course.

But even if there had been time to do anything, anything at all to save anyone, Schilva had scarcely the presence of mind to simply call out to them, let alone to turn and pull them back, to chide them for picking what could only be described as an unwinnable battle. It wasn't like his magisteed would just let him do that either. Lubricated, repowered and fleeing for safety with urgency that trumped all else, TWIN TURBO KAI NI barely noticed Schilva coming to and only sped away, away, further away.

So there he sat upon TWIN TURBO KAI NI's thin, knifelike back, watching dumbstruck as one...two...and three small dots sparkled and vanished away in the face of the seemingly unstoppable light.

Mouth hanging slightly open, Schilva's drying eyes squinted unseeing into the end. Sometimes it was closer, sometimes further, its distance measurable by how much ambient heat he could feel singeing his hair and scalding his skin. Almost as soon as the killing radiance ceased to menace and began to fall behind, Schilva could feel the ground disappear from beneath TWIN TURBO KAI NI's feet. The change of footing jolted him into awareness of his own falling, but too late to do much else.

-unf-

Landing heavily, both the clanking and grunting of steed and rider punctuated Schilva's status as the first to be clear of the God-Searing Light. Soon after, in short order, everyone arrived. Everyone still alive, that is. Heart sinking half the party never crested the Dragonshear threshold, Schilva tried moving his parched lips to ask what had happened, despite knowing full well the answer.

Then, @Valmont pulled out a massive construct and began to just...regenerate on the spot everyone who had died. The day had come to a...strangely satisfying end, though it was worrying that, you know, the enemy had this just sitting in their back pocket. And, like, three people died.

...but we're still kickin', aren't we, buddy?

Schilva gave the silvery hide of Twin Turbo Kai Ni a limp pat.

The steed snorts, whinnies at the sudden contact, and bucks him onto the ground.

Well, it was bound to happen eventually.

She'd always wondered what it'd feel like to evaporate. Not really but a little false curiosity didn't hurt. Well, it would hurt. A lot. But, for now, it helped relieve some of the "oh fuck a death beam from the fucking mechanical gods is going to fry me".

Aerial caught Thunderstruck's eye for a split second. "You better fucking survive." Thunderstruck snorted in frustration as he dragged her by the hair, imploring her not to be a reckless idiot. It was too late for that, though.

A scorching ray vaporized any trace of the headstrong woman. Not before an excruciating pain burned itself into her body, engraving a pain deep within she'd never forget. What in reality was a brief second felt like an eternity.

And then there was darkness.

Thunderstruck did his best to fend off @Valmont's invasive surgery. Teeth bared, he repeatedly lunged at the man who made him feel so vulnerable. A fool who dared tamper with his body and core. Suddenly, he halted - a mechanical statue. His eyes flashed with static as his body forcibly reset itself.

Meanwhile, Aerial went from being blinded by light, to being blind due to darkness, to being blinded by light once again. A hand blocked the unforgiving sun that glared down upon the "valiant hero".

Wait. Where the fuck was she? Wasn't she supposed to be at some sort of temple? Her questions were answered when she caught sight of Valmont. Ah, right, every proper support knew a resurrection spell. With her hand sheepishly playing with her hair, her cheeks burned red as smiled at her pocket support

"Heh.. You look a little mad. I'm sorrrryyy. I love you and you're the bestest support~"

Apparently, during the time she spent void of life, @Jin had managed to survive. What the fuck? She died and he didn't? What kind of absolute bullshit was that? And.. ew. His skin was slowly reforming and.. and it was just gross, okay?
"Hey, I tried out your little kink. I'mma say it's a big no for me."

Finally, she spotted Thunderstruck. He looked.. different. Like how he'd been before their souls were connected by a thread of blood. Wait... She couldn't sense him either. Teeth grabbed her shoulder and roughly pushed her to the ground when she approached. Well, that wasn't out of the norm but it was different.

"Do you not remember me?"

Her question was met with a bared-teeth answer. So, wait. She'd sacrificed herself just for this ungrateful chunk of metal to completely forget her?

"What the hell happened, you ungrateful piece of- I thought we'd really started to bond out there."

Should she be angry or sad? Or both? Yeah, both worked.

Just like it took time for bones to properly set after being shifted back into place, or for a wound to heal after opening, it would take time for Jin's body to properly reconfigure after being stripped down to ashes. His Hemomancy to its credit did a great deal of work in the field of creating new flesh and muscle tissue, but it was not a healing power by any stretch of the imagination. Like a potter forming clay, he made the vessel, but on its own it held no life.

Only through the wonders of the body itself would that vessel hold life again.

However, that was no less of a miracle. Every iota of pain that he could feel still wracked his body. There were thousands upon thousands of nerves in a human body, and in an instant his lit up brighter than the New York City skyline. Most of them had not survived the initial inferno, but his mind recalled the memory of their demise. With extreme clarity.

His crimson gaze was still glassy as he both relished and lamented the agony that was existence. In the "real" world, he would never have survived. In this world, a killing blow could be overcome through sheer force of will and the application of magic. Despite the look of him at a glance, Jin was endurance given form.

Hey, I tried out your little kink. I'mma say it's a big no for me."

Jin's gaze snapped up from concentration as he was addressed and he looked over the girl who was speaking. He recalled vaguely snapping off a comment, less invitational than snarky, but it appeared that she had gone the same way as him and yielded completely different results. First death.

Societal norms dictated he didn’t know her well enough to ask what it was like.

Tragic.

"Shame," he shrugged. "We can't all have great taste, though."
