The Frontline
Season 4 Finale - Part 1

The past few weeks have seen a grueling fight between Szofrit and the Starcalled. As the holidays approached, the defenders' numbers dwindled and it became increasingly challenging to fend off the relentless Dragonship enemies. With players constantly logging in and out and the number of them burnt out while defending nearly around the clock, it was difficult for the Chief Strategist, Accelerator, to make the most of the Starcalled's power. The best they could hope for was a stalemate.

To break the deadlock, Accelerator devised a plan. He assembled a team led by Childress and the Whistles, who had knowledge of the former capital. Their goal was to advance stealthily while the palace defenders increased their aggression, pushing into Szofrit's territory before falling back with the intention of taking the enemy's focus off of the stealthy pushers. For the Forward team, progress had to be slow and deliberate, as they were entering the enemy's stronghold. The team planned to utilize any available advantage, such as assassinating enemies and securing strategic locations, all the while occupying abandoned buildings. Everything was for the explicit purpose of establishing a safer route to the heart of Dragonhead. The closer they could get, the better their chances of success.

- ✦ -

When the first leyline shot up into the winter sky, the UI Noise caused a complete shutdown of communication between the starcalled, making it difficult for them to relay information back to Accelerator. This, combined with the debilitating effects of keeping their UI enabled, resulted in communication being cut off between the frontline, Camp Hope, and beyond.

To maintain some semblance of order, Accelerator utilized the services of speedy players as messengers, who served as his eyes, ears, and mouth, all to coordinate the efforts of the frontline despite the immense challenges.

Upon receiving news that Szofrit was launching an attack on both Camp Hope and Finweald, Accelerator seized the opportunity presented by the enemy's divided attention and pushed the Forward team further towards the heart of Dragonhead. Once they were close enough, he planned to launch a full-scale counter-attack against the leader of the Dragonship.

Season 4 Finale - Part 2

You are the shield of the frontline, stopping the machines' advances on the Ruined Palace. You and your allies have mounted every possible defenses on the wall and worked to whittle down the endless metallic bodies being thrown at you. Occasionally when the enemy retreated, you would push forward, wading through the battlefield littered with metal and flesh to punish their transgression, but immediately retreat to safety when they retaliate.

Their steeled bodies may be sharp, but your fang is sharper. Show them the starcalled's exceptionalism. Do not let them overtake the Ruined Palace.

Know that once you are at the frontline, there is no coming back. Hold the line and when the opportunity presents itself, defeat the enemy or you will be assimilated.

Chaos reigned even as the hare had arrived with the missive, the latest message from Accelerator delivered promptly before Toko headed towards the battlefield. This was where her skills excelled the most, being up close and personal with their enemies, and she dove right into the thickest part of the conflict without hesitation.

A burst of astral energy pushed countless of mechanical bodies in all directions as Toko cleared a place where she could stand on, palms pressing against the rough surface before the fighter manipulated it to her desires. The earth around a fifteen foot radius from the hare flattened into firm and stable ground, while bark and stone became natural guards that adhered themselves to her hands and legs .

A hand extended forwards, the palm facing upwards and fingers held together, as crimson eyes swept over the endless sea of metallic bodies of all shapes and sizes that faced the fighter—a wide smirk stretching her lips. "Kakatte koi!!!" Her voice was loud and firm, fingers waving towards the rabbit as she challenged her enemies to come closer so they could taste the ass whooping she would specially prepare for each and every single one of them.

Taunting (768)

The first one to fall for her bait ate a fist right to their face, the hardened stone causing the scrapped metal parts to cave under the force of the blow, before the hare pivoted in place to deliver a reverse roundhouse kick at the second that approached her from behind. Adrenaline pumped into her veins, the thrill of combat spurring the fighter on just as she tapped into that dormant power that inhabited the depths of her mind. A pale golden aura surrounded the lepus as the spirit awakened, a pair of antelope horns with silver inlay slowly sprouted upon her forehead.

"Gomen Tsukito Seereeh-sama," She could feel the energy spreading across her limbs as the aura grew in potency, a quiet acknowledgement echoing in the back of her mind. "I’ll be borrowing some of your strength for now!"

"You picked the worst time to log in, Ilusa," Astor chuckled as he pulled @Ilusa Nakhalee up onto the horse and made sure she was nicely tucked in before he gestured a farewell to Cessia.

"Hyah!" he spurred the horse forward, fighting the oppressive winter winds to rush toward Vintergard where his Chief Strategist was working on clearing a direct path to Szofrit.

While they were on their way to the frontline, Astor grabbed onto Ilusa's arm and had her wrap more tightly around his waist. The winds were colder than he thought.

"Even in cold of winter, our country burns. No matter how hard I grasp onto the future of a safe and prosperous Astorea, it keeps slipping through my fingers," Astor spoke as he looked down at his fist. "Maybe one day we can have our rest, but that won't be today."

Without turning back to look at Ilusa he held her arms with his own. "It may be selfish of me to say, especially when he might be riding toward our death, but don't leave my side."

When they arrived at the Ruined Palace and had received a quick debriefing of the ongoing battle, Astor climbed atop his horse with Ilusa once more and rushed into the battlefield to back up the fighting starcalled.

"Charge! Take down the cannon setting up on the hill!" he issued his command on horseback.

How did she even get into this situation? It seemed that the girl simply had a talent for finding trouble wherever it might have laid. Although Vintergard and the Dragonhead were hardly a secret, the place certainly did seem important these days. And after living through the assault on Camp Hope, Fina found herself unable to resist the call of this place.

So here she was, her dance as lethal as ever. Countless violet weapons dotted the battlefield, forged of light and magic, waiting to be grabbed by the feline as she moved past. With almost every attack, she would grab a new weapon of hers, then quickly create more in the sky and let gravity embed them in the ground down below. It was a reckless style of fighting, but it worked just fine for her.

But perhaps it was time to leave that aimless slaughter of steel behind as she heard the rallying cry of Astor approaching. Her golden eyes swiftly snapped to the cannon he spoke of, the path to it littered with more than just a few dissonant magia. At least until a bunch of them were sent flying by @Toko. "Thanks, miss rabbit!" Even if the assist wasn't intentional, it was nonetheless appreciated.

Sprinting up the incline and taking down any stragglers along the way, the forge master did not hesitate to make even more use of her Arcanamancy to bring forth a barrage of spears, sending them straight into the cannon only to make herself a hammer with which she would drive those spears even deeper into the structure.

Vulnerable.

Admittedly, this wasn't where she had been planning to spend her day. But the lights in the sky made her worry and the plumes of smoke, the screams, and the clash of swords as she approached the Ruined Palace didn't help matters. Perhaps she didn't really consider herself to be Astor's citizen (her time was spent in the wilds more than civilization), but that didn't mean that she could allow others to perish.

Twisting the magic around her hands, Prim is careful and slow as she makes her way onto the battlefield. She doesn't recognize any friends, any people that she knows intimately enough to immediately come to their aid, but that doesn't matter in the grand scheme of things, did it? They were all fighting for something, be it peace or power, and Prim could only hope that she was supporting the right side.

Hm. Maybe she should take more interest in what happened in the civilized communities that dotted the world.

Her power coalesced into spectral animals that she sent forward to help her allies, massive tigers that mimicked their attacks, or great tortoises that attempted to block damage. Upon her shoulder, a small finch settled and cried out, making Prim smile.

Season 4 Finale - Part 2 - Cycle 2

"Shit, shit, shit!" Astor shouted as the a sea of enemies came in like a tidal wave, smashing hard steel against hard stones. He barely made it through the gate when the opening was filled with squirming swords ready to mow down anything in their way.

As Astor's horse worked double time to get him and @Ilusa Nakhalee to safety, Accelerator gave the signal for a group of spellcaster to blast the opening. Had Astor not drifted with his steed, he would have been vaporized by the blast.

The near-hit earned Accelerator a seething scowl from Astor. Accelerator shouted toward Astor, "Great baiting, your majesty! Fine drifting you've got there," he smiled.

Meanwhile, Stephanie frantically shuffled her deck of card, clearly out of breath as her gacha summons blasted the enemies below. Should you pass by her, she will ask if you would like to pull a card from her Deck of Not-many Cards. It appeared that the deck drains energy, which limited her ability to draw a lot of cards.

"Whew... sorry, I burned through so much energy to draw that flying fire-blasting blastard that I emptied my reserve, could you maybe pull out a card in my place? It's only the bad and buff cards left," she spitted words out between ragged breathing.

Behind Steph was a large flying alligator vomiting smoldering lava onto the wave of machines.

Regardless of what you choose to do, make sure that your side does not get flushed out from the most strategically important location in all of Vintergard. You must hold until the Forward team finish clearing the path where the counter-attack would be launched from.

-50 HP from The Maw

No rest for the wicked, or for the people trying to hold back the wicked, apparently. As things in Finnweald seemed to be drawing to a close, Langley departed for the Ruined Palace to shore up the defenses there. He paced through the area trying to see if there was anything in particular he could help with, and his attention caught on a frantic-looking redheaded girl asking for people to draw a card from a near-depleted deck she was holding onto. From the look of things, there was a small collection of people (@Shadow @Ash Vargold @Toko) who were about to oblige. Langley figured he had nothing to lose by joining in.

Oh, how wrong he was.

He barely saw a hint of printed text spelling out THE MAW and what seemed to be a scribble of black printed on the face of the card before the card vanished, swallowed up by a writhing black mass. And so did the rest of his hand, and wrist, and his entire arm up to the elbow.

"What the hell is--" And this was when he felt the teeth tear into his arm. "Agh!!"

He shook his arm, trying to dislodge the black-- slime? Moss? Whatever it was that felt like it was chewing his arm to ribbons. Little black flakes fluttered like snow to the ground, but the mass didn't budge an inch.

The pain in his arm was now excruciating. Frantically, Langley turned towards trying to scrape the thing off by dragging it across some nearby rubble. This appeared to work, as slowly the mass sloughed off his arm, revealing strands of tattered clothing and deep wounds left by dragging teeth. The entire thing tumbled to the ground after one last desperate shake, where it bounced off a rock and rolled to a patch of dirt shaded by Langley's shadow...

...and disappeared. Uhhh, what...?

Pressing his injured arm to his torso, Langley scuffed at the dirt where that thing was supposed to be with his shoe. Nothing substantial emerged, but his ears caught a very faint high-pitched scream coming from the dirt as his shoe dragged a black smear across the ground. Concerning. He took a few steps back to see if maybe a different viewing angle would reveal it. Still nothing. Very concerning.

'Out of sight, out of mind' didn't seem like the greatest mantra to live by at the moment considering there was a ravenous flesh-eating monstrosity lost somewhere, but there were other important things to worry about. Like a small group of mechanical attackers advancing on their position. Langley gave up his search for the thing and made his way down to the ground to assist in the defense.

He traveled from shadow to shadow, staying out of sight of the group, his attention focused on one lagging in the back. He crouched behind some rubble, waiting for his target to step right up to one particular shadow, before teleporting in with a high kick aimed right for the attacker's head.

Black energy flared around his foot as the impact connected, sending the would-be assailant down into the dirt. As the steel body hit the ground by Langley's feet, however, something lashed out from his shadow. It extended like a tentacle, topped with a lamprey-like mouth that latched onto the fallen magia's body. Langley could hear a distinctly metallic crunch.

...Did his shadow just try to eat something? Was the Maw now stuck in his shadow? Feeling the beginning of a freakout coming on, Langley kicked the body away from him. The shadow-Maw released the metal--just before it flew away Langley spotted a jagged hole where the lamprey-mouth had latched on--and snaked back into his own.

'NOPE. NOPE NOPE NOPE.'

It seemed that the defense was holding pretty well. And with the king here, it seemed that the morale would only improve for everyone. All in all, Fina had a pretty good feeling about all of this... which usually meant that something horrible was on the horizon. Oh well, tomorrow's problems were a problem for tomorrow's Fina, so the girl took the chance to retreat back to the wall for now. Even she needed a bit of a breather here and there amidst all of the fighting. She grew pretty strong, but she was far from invincible.

Other allies seemed to be gathering up there as well, including Steph. Though their encounter during the Summer shenanigans against a pirate crew was relatively brief, she had already witnessed the girl's... strange powers. But given the gathering around her, the feline figured that she might as well try. 'Urukkhan's Scorn...?' As she read the card's name, Fina felt... strange. Little bad, as if she had just received a massive scolding or something. But at the same time, the anger that came from that, as unwarranted as it was, made her feel like she could smash an entire DEAD.Naught into a pulp. Yeah, maybe it was a mistake to meddle with those cards.

Regardless, what was done was done. Nodding to Steph, the forge master took a deep breath and walked over to the edge of the wall. It seemed that even more dissonant magia were arriving... were they truly endless? It didn't matter. If their goal was to defend this position, then defend this position she would! "Actually, from up here..." It was a pretty good vantage point. And there were a lot of enemies down below, doing their best to get through the defenses right in front of them... rather than paying attention to what might have been coming at them from up above.

Whether it was a moment of recklessness or something brought about by the magic of the card, Fina leaped over the protective railing as she conjured a great-warhammer in her hands. She didn't need to worry about it being unwieldy in this position, merely that the weapon, much larger than her entire body, was below her as she let gravity do the work. Sure enough, she slammed into the crowd of mechanical opponents like a meteor.

The crash was powerful enough to shatter the land, creating a fairly sizable crater that sent even those not directly hit flying into the air. She wasn't quite done with just that, however. Connected to the ground now, she forged countless spears just beneath the surface so they could burst upward after the impact, creating a landing zone that was nothing short of lethal. Those still on the ground would be impaled right there, while those falling down from the impact would find themselves skewered as well soon enough. This was... awfully brutal for Fina...

"Oh, hell no." Vashti lifted her hand and jerked it downward in a vigorous motion as a lone Magia managed to slip through the cracks. She'd taken up a position along the ruined ramparts, where she could get a good vantage point and pick off targets as they broke against the walls. This one almost managed to take her by surprise.

Almost.

The gun populated in her hand and cocked in a single, fluid motion. Her mastery thus far allowed her several variable loadouts, including a shotgun for close range and an MMR setting for more skilled shots. The former was more appropriate for her current situation.

She splattered the machine's oil and driver materials across the fractured wall behind it with a thunderous report.

"They're breaching the wall up here, too!"

She wasn't sure who was reporting what, but an open line of communication was important in situations like these. The difference between life and death was knowing where the threat was, and what it was capable of. She glanced back out at the enemy for a moment and took stock of her allies, reaching into her kit to produce two small drones, each kitted with a healing salve that promptly began to cycle and sputter to life.

That card she'd drawn from the deck before coming up to the rampart... the Visage of Death was unnerving to say the least, but from what she knew of real world Tarot, Death wasn't about dying so much as it was a symbol of change. If the same rules followed, hopefully this, too, was a net positive.

Vashti was due for some positivity.

"Alright you two," she said, explicitly directing the drones, "get down there and start tending to any wounded. We need everyone we can get in Tip Top shape so we can hold this... uh... position." She was loathe to call it a fortification. It really wasn't.

"Assess people with bio-scans to determine who has the most need. We'll go from there."

The units whirred to life and sped quickly down to the base level, floating around and checking each person they could see for anything that needed immediate attention. One of them sped out through the breach as it detected a person that appeared falling from above, and registered Fina as "in need of immediate care" as it administered the salve... without asking permission first.

Err... that was a failure to communicate on the part of the operator.

The other droid found a man who appeared to be in a great deal of pain, though the machine remained blissfully ignorant of the eldritch powers that seemed to be causing the problem. "Target acquired," the drone beeped, and it began to unload a torrential deluge of healing salve on the poor and unsuspecting Langley.

Meanwhile, Vashti continued to take her potshots from on high into the Magia onslaught.

"Be careful to not fall..." She said, swaying her tails and tracing the enemies with her eyes, until a familiar frame was met in the middle of the horde of magia.

"... That girl..." Ruby frowned, glancing at Vina and gesturing toward the silvery haired cat. "Sorry, Vina. I will rush ahead." She said, shifting to gaze to the warzone before leaping down recklessly and unsheathing her blade with a ferocious roar.

After a feline war cry, Ruby threw herself in completely reckless abandon, slashing and crashing against enemy after enemy, sinking her blande into the gaps of their metallic and construct bodies, building her way toward her friend after crushing yet another Magia with a powerful blow that grew up its strength with momentum.

Her gaze set on @Fina Drago.

"What are you doing in here all by yourself?" Ruby hissed the question with a scowl crossing her expressions, with her blade ready to pierce through any other magia that would be on their way.

No rest for the wicked, as they say. Especially when they serve the crown of Astorea.

@Nyx and I arrived at the Ruined Palace a little late for the party, it seemed. As we pulled to a stop on our steeds, there were already bodies of magia and defenders piled high all around. Blood and oil filled my nostrils; enough to turn my guts and make me wretch.

It was like the horrors of fighting inside Titanius all over again.

A frantic mage was begging everyone to take cards. Apparently, my Poker luck didn't mean shit here--the moment my fingers touched one of them, a giant fucking maw stitched together by pure shadows took a nasty bite out of my shoulder.

Look. That's all the description you're going to get. That's all I have time for. Do you see the waves of enemy forces homing in on our position? Do you think I have time to go into great detail about that sort of thing? I can't even spare you a moment to tell you all the horrible, nasty things I called the woman handing out the cards in the first place!

I ignored the pain. Easy to do, with my settings set the way they are. Tearing my two revolvers from their holsters, I flash Nyx a wicked grin. "I'll meet you down there. Loser buys dinner, what do you say?" And before the assassin could answer, I leaped from the safety of the walls and landed in a crouch on the field below.

Yeah, almost immediately regretted that. I'm ranged. I should be on top. But what's the point of building out as a gunslinger if you're not going to go full YEEHAW sometimes? I blink on Deadeye. The world slows to a crawl around me. One by one, I line up my shots on approaching magia. With each pull of the trigger, another one hits the ground. Hammers fall upon empty chambers, and time snaps back into place. I quickly dip into the shadows cast by the corpses littering the battlefield and refill my guns before I drift over to a more advantageous spot and blink once again.

He let out a whistle, a long and steady whistle as he moved and reached down into his quiver and pulled out a set of arrows, letting them rest in that spiritual hand tapping against his thigh as he moved. He had made it with enough time to get something down, which was good because if he was not going to be drinking, then he was going to work. And for that, he would need a high point, making his way to a small area with s few trees because that would be something he would need if they were going to keep up the pressure. Grabbing one of his arrows and falling into position, he nocked it and pulled back on the bow looking at the cannon far on the hill. "I don't do charging Astor, but I can cover you." And with that, he turned his ai up slightly, ensuring that his arrow would have enough drop to slam into this target. He had brought the heavy ones, the armor-punching things that were made to pin a full knight to the ground and ensure they stayed there.

And then he aimed, and he felt that thrill of being good at something, at being someone who could get a job down without the need to drown himself in the drink. He could judge the distance and see the eyes of the person or thing he was going to put his arrow into; it was one of the better things about focusing on range combat until it ran through your head like clockwork. He knew distances, wind direction, and the weight of his arrows, so he aimed, narrowing his sights on the machines. And started to call his shots; the first was one of his heavier arrows, which seemed too large to come from a longbow but too small to come from a ballista as he watched people jump from the palace. "Well, that is something." They could have fun in the middle of them. He would keep shooting from the Palace.

Having grouped up with Ruby back in Camp Hope, it didn't take long for the two of them to agree that they quickly needed to join the others at the frontline, which meant that they had to combine their efforts. With Ruby picking her up and carrying the songstress could focus on humming a tune that called forth the winds, pushing against them from behind so the red-haired feline could dash across the landscape at high speed as if her feet had grown wings.

Once they arrived Vina would smile gratefully towards her friend, planting her own feet back on the ground as the two of them gazed out over the battle that was in full swing.

Don't worry, I'll be fine~

At the same time that Ruby spotted @Fina Drago Vina heard the sounds of her other feline friend fighting, the unmistakable sound of the air dancing a chaotic waltz as weapons were conjured out of nothing in large amounts combined with the footsteps of an agile weaponmaster.

What's she doing out there without any support...? (She looked back at Ruby and nodded.) Stay safe Ruby.

The words had only just left her mouth when her friend decided to ignore them and just jump off the ledge, leaving Vina to watch as Ruby made it clear that she had no concern for her well-being.

That is the exact opposite of staying safe!

With a soft sigh Vina quickly pulled her flute from her inventory, her ears perking up as she tried to get a grip on the patterns of air that flowed throughout the battlefield. It was almost messy when so much was going on, but she'd have to get a grip on it if she wanted to help her friends.

❰ Life Lyrics ❱

As she began to play a swift and lively rhythm the chaotic winds changed, swirling around the white-haired vixen before spreading out, down the wall and towards the two felines who were now together fighting against the mechanical tide. The winds swirled around the two of them as well, carrying Vina's upbeat tune. While it might merely be emotional support for Fina Ruby would find herself the focus of Vina's attention, the rhythm flowing through her entire being and washing away the pain she might have suffered because of her own recklessness.

-25 from Lady Pain's Offer
+11 from Regen

“Nonsense. ‘Tis just the right timing.” Ilusa spoke softly, leaning into him and feeling the actual softness of the fur against her cheek. And it let her distract herself at the thought of not in fact logging on time; of missing this important moment in history, of logging in too late to do anything and be met with a result.

Worse was the fact that it could have happened. In the other world Ilusa still had responsibilities; she had the livelihood of numerous people and in some cases family on her hands (of course she had help, but the weight of it all rested mainly on her). There were times when she could not log in even though she wanted to.

The UI kept flickering and it was distracting, but also worrisome for many Players. After all, casting with help of UI was easy - Ilusa could do without but what about others?

His hand held hers, even as she pressed further into his back, it grounded her. “This world is cruel like that.” She said and then giggled, nuzzling his back. “I’m just as selfish, I want you by my side.”

And soon she heard the sounds of battle and leaned back in order to see better, past his shoulder, past his back.

The glow of her weapon signified battle readiness - the UI flickered, distracting her. Trying to lock it was useless-

A quiet eek escaped Ilusa as the ride turned even more dangerous and when an explosion of mana behind them signed the tip of of the fur of her tail. A shiver went through her and then she focused around. They left the horse and went forward onwards to the castle.

There was a woman who promised buffs - with possibility of damage. Ilusa was in the best possible form to try that gamble. So she picked a card “Lady Pain's Offer”and hissed when the card glowed and a crying and laughing lady visage appeared before it sank into her hand; the pain was sharp, like daggers digging into the flesh, welts of blood appeared, soaking through the fabric of her robe. The HUD showed nothing, but she no longer trusted it to report the truth.

But she also felt a swell of power. It bubbled beneath her skin, moving from her hand to her heart.

Immediately she started casting. Glyphs of power floated around her, the orbs floated around her and @Astor - keeping away from his direct view. She looked around, ignoring the flickering HUD and looking only at the damage to the bodies. And then, pale gold flecks of magic floated gently to her targets, wrapping around them, healing and shielding them from some harm.

She trembled a little, but soon her own, by now innate, divine magic started to heal the damage to her hand, the bloodied welts slowly stopping bleeding and starting to close.

And she kept to Astor, staying by his side now instead of his back, the floating orbs swirling gently around them. “We need to hold out… The HUD is more of hindrance now. But even trying to disable it will be even more distracting. …I wonder just how they affected it.”

-50 HP from drawing The Maw

Ash was back in his right mind - mostly. Working out the balance between him and them was an ongoing process, but he'd managed to carve out the part of his mind that was unequivocally his. Which, by the way, shouldn't be a problem he was having in the first place.

Not enough in his right mind to think twice about drawing one of Steph's cards, though. He only had a moment to read the name of the card - The Maw - before the card erupted into a mass of gnashing teeth and shadows that ripped past his armor as it sank its teeth into his arm. He dropped the card with a his, the sharp pain already numbing under the influence of spectral cold.

"...why do you have so many of those," he muttered, glaring in Steph's direction before turning back to the wall.

For what was supposed to be a defensive maneuver, there was a surprising amount of offense happening on the side of the Starcalled. Not a surprise, considering the usual player strategy, but it meant his attention was split between reinforcing the walls and trying to support the fighters. He caught sight of a few familiar beastkin, who in lieu of normal things like stairs had opted to leap off the walls and directly into the fray.

"Oi, be careful!"

Some part of him (probably them, actually) wanted to follow, but instead he focused on protective enhancements. There were plenty of dead in this city, and they were more than eager for a chance to strike back at their murderers.

What the hell had she been thinking? She'd been drawn into this conflict by the idea that it would be a good way to increase her connections with others. She'd heard that something was going on, but there had been very little information at first. More and more players had rushed to the defense of this city and there were talks about powerful and influential players and npcs alike being present for what was to come. Information was tightly controlled, though, because this conflict seemed to be even more serious than she had initially estimated.

Now here she was, smack dab in the middle of it. She'd been keeping under the radar for a little while now during the initial stages of the battle. The siege of the ruined palace growing more intense by the minute as more powerful players hurried to the defensive lines and even waded out into battle like madmen. They were up against machines and god knew what else. As for her, she had taken a different tactic. The player and npc defenders were constantly being wounded and forced to fall back to recover. Some injuries more serious than others. Risk of infection was everywhere and the only thing that could stem the tide of the microbial enemy behind the frontlines was magic.

Her magic.

She stood among rows of injured men and women, gripping her spear before glancing towards the ruined walls and the mighty heroes fighting glorious battle outside. That was fine. She didn't need to draw their attention, yet. She held out her hand and closed her eyes, the strange almost incomprehensible words of [Hymn No.3: Minor Restoration] filling the air as if they were coming from her body rather than her lips. The golden flames rushed out and coated the weakened grunts and footsoldiers, closing a few wounds and burning away minor impurities.

Abruptly, the sounds of battle increased outside and a shout was called for healers to move to the wall to support the starcalled. Her lip twitched at the interruption but instead she gave an apologetic look to the desperate men and women around her and bowed. "I will return as soon as I can," she said softly, hurrying to the designated area just as her UI flickered again. Her eye twitched in annoyance and she quickly shut it down, she preferred to run without it anyway. She arrived at the edge of the battle and glanced around, trying to spot who was having the most trouble just as a woman passed by offering her a card from some manner of magic deck. She frowned at it but wasn't opposed, couldn't hurt, right?

She drew a card and felt a rush of euphoria wash over her, inspiration bounding through her body and mind in a wave. She could practically feel the suffering around her, sensing the strength of those nearby for the briefest of moments before it faded. As if under a spell, she rushed as close as she dared to the rear before throwing out a hand and resuming the third hymn. This time focusing on three targets who seemed to need it the most. She didn't know their names, or if they were even worth healing, but that didn't matter. At this moment every instinct in her mind told her that this was the right decision to make. Was the game guiding her?

The first recitation rippled out and golden flames appeared on her targets, the man with blue hair (@Ash Vargold ) the archer (@Aalam Abungu ) and a girl with white hair (@Ilusa Nakhalee ). She kept it going, even when the recitation ended she pushed into a second recitation, driven forward by the inspiration granted by the strange magic card. She kept her focus on those three targets, a surge of warmth burning through her veins and intensifying the healing hymn. It wasn't nearly as much as some of the more powerful players healing, but it was the most she could offer. As the second recitation ended she felt a backlash wash over her, her strength wilting just as the guiding force drifted away. She came back to her senses and gasped, staggering back a step.

She needed to get back to the center, this was too dangerous!

”Thanks, miss rabbit!” The voice calling in her direction caught her ears, causing Toko to look over after her punch delivered a new crater fixture to the face of her mechanical opponent to spot @Fina. "Aah, tondemonai yo!"

A thumbs up was sent in the felis’ direction as she sped past, before the unexpected wave of nature magic infusing into her frame caused the hare to look around for the source. She found it quickly as those crimson eyes landed on @Primrose, a large grin given to the faerin as she called out to them. "Arigatooh, Nee-san!" The booming voice of the @King caused her gaze to fall upon the top of the wall, spotting familiar faces huddling together as the arrival of reinforcements caused those on the battlefield to fall back and regroup.

Lithe steps quickly carried her towards the wall, a subtle purple glow wrapping her feet as the force of gravity was reversed, before her hands pressed against the stone wall as the fighter allowed her magic and will to reform parts of it. Footholds emerged from stone as a result, placed so far away that for most would be impossible to use, but the fighter had little issue jumping from one to the next as she quickly raced up the wall.

"Yo!" A carefree wave was given to those present that she quickly recognized, eyes dancing from @Madison to @Vargold , @Harper and then @Shadow, before the frantic pleas of a redhead magician grabbed Toko’s attention. "Ah, Steph-chan! Hisashiburi ne!"

Curious eyes glanced at the bag the girl held out to them and, before Steph had even finished her explanation, a hand had already reached within to draw a card. The visage of a woman with long hair stared back at the hare, a spiked iron helmet covering the top half of her face, before finally catching the title of ❰ Lady Pain’s Offer ❱ at the very top of the card. "Eeeh, kakkoii desitai!" A sharp pain lanced up her hand then, causing the lepus to quickly release the card that now shimmered before dissipating into the wind, before a soft golden glow mended most of the wound on her palm.

"Gomen, owe ya one Tsukito Seereh-sama."

As the initial surprise ebbed away Toko quickly became aware of a new boon that mingled with those given by Primrose, the fighter opening and closing her palm as she tested her reflexes before crimson eyes fell onto the cannon being set up by their opponents. Her gaze moved downwards then, taking in the distance from where she stood to the sea of murderous metal that awaited them below, the gears on her mind turning even as a smirk slowly pulled the corners of her lips.

Toko wasn’t the only one to see the advantage a leap from this distance could provide, though her mind never seemed to even consider the possible risks it also carried. A young vixen caught her attention as @Vashti sent her little drones to aid those already wounded, encouraging the girl with a "Otskare dess, Kitsune-chan~!" and a thumbs up, before her attention turned to the emo and edgy present buddy she’d met over Wintersday.

"Think you can keep up, Shadoo-chan?" A teasing grin played on her lips even as a hand reached to pat the man atop his head, a ruffling motion made against the hood of his cloak, before the same challenging stare was shifted towards @Harper next. "Lots of scrap metal to clear out today…"

Her eyes finally settled on @Vargold at last as other players began to leap from the wall in a renewed and coordinated assault. "Yoroshku, Ash-san~" A light salute and a grin were given to the caenis, before the hare backed up a few steps in preparation. She broke into a full sprint then, crouching low as her feet reached the edge of the wall for added momentum, before the warning cry of @Vargold tickled her ears and promptly faded as the hare jumped freely and without a second thought.

She spun in the air to increase her momentum as gravity pulled her downwards, a radiant comet of cosmic energy streaking towards the countless enemies huddled at the bottom of the wall, before a wave of ki and spiritual energy forcefully cleared a 30 foot radius around the fighter as her fist connected with the barren soil. A fire burned deep within those crimson eyes as Toko looked upwards, her sight quickly locking on the cannon still being set up, before a savage smirk pulled her lips apart to reveal sharp canines and pearly white teeths to her foes.

"Ora ora oraaa!" Her voice boomed through the battlefield as the hare began to carve a path forwards, and anything standing in her way was met with a reckless force that refused to stall or be redirected. Fluid motions ensured that sturdy punches and swift kicks connected without hampering her momentum, any obstacles in her way promptly removed and—in many cases—forcefully deactivated. "C’mon, is this all ya got?!"

Kamala flashed Stephanie a warm smile as she passed by her, though the sight of the flying alligator vomiting lava behind her was a little offputting. The elf had never seen anything like it before, none that she could recall, so it was...something. Still, she managed to help Stephanie with her request before focusing on the crisis before them.

"No problem!"

Once that was all done, and after feeling a strange kind of pain that was then followed by a boost of magical adrenaline or something like it, Kamala extended both arms in front of her, and like one of those conductors in a massive opera concert, began orchestrating the mending spirits of harmonious nature to help her manifest a powered-up version of the "Garden of Gwyndolainn," an illusory shielding barrier that should keep her allies alive with healing over time.

Graceful swirls of green and white light immediately flood from her, dancing in the air around her and her patients, while phantasmal green leaves waft through the air. All those visual accouterments were accompanied by a whimsical and playful tune. Her patients, targets, themselves would feel a sensation of gentle warmth and smell the scent of spring flowers.

"Don't worry, everyone! I'm here!"

It's supposed to be easier to fight when more medics are around, right? Fingers crossed.

Arriving right behind @Kamala Graham, perennial babysitter Chrystopheles Hardcastle (not his real name) lamented this very fate. After completing a mission for Guild Master Cessia, in which he easily annihilated his consistent party mate @Ayna Nietzsche to stop her nonsensical rampage throughout Finweald, he expected the Adventurers Guild to give him a holiday or a vacation for his heroic effort. Then he remembered money waits for no man—Pretty sure that's supposed to be "time" but mkayand he loved money, so here he was. Ah, the things we do for love.

Towering over Stephanie, he offered her a quick nod and an even quicker smile before squinting at her deck, almost crushing her tiny handsies when he finally made up his mind and picked the worst card of the lot. To be fair, he didn't know it was the worst card there was, so his disappointment was immeasurable and his day was ruined. Until he caught sight of the cool-looking flying alligator behind her. Damn, Cessia wasn't lying when she said there'd be dragons here. I mean... It's not like most dragons I've seen on paper but a job is a job dragon is a dragon.

"Cool dragon. How much?"

Hmm. Sounds like I'm needed over there. The sound of fighting soon caught his attention, which was odd since everyone had already been fighting shit before he arrived, but one could guess the God of Rocks wasn't that interested in the battle. Perhaps if he didn't catch sight of the Guild Master Cessia in Finweald, not to mention the King Astor himself, Chrys would've ignored the entire event altogether.

With another quick smile and nod to Stephanie, he heaved a sigh as he made his way toward the edge of the Ruined Palace. From the vantage point, he smiled. War feels the same as I remember, but where are those that share the memory? He heaved another sigh before taking a single step and dropping himself down below with neither grace nor care.

As soon as Chrys landed, however, he immediately manifested his Thousand Sparkling Gold through his Auric Geomancy, commanding the very power of earth to create a Stone Stele that burst from the ground, damaging those in front of him. The sight would be hilarious to a juvenile mind for obvious reasons. Upon impact, however, the Stone Stele immediately crumbled and all that remained of it swirled around @Kamala Graham, @Attia Patal, and @Aalam Abungu, boosting their defense as a transparent shield of golden light.

"Hey. Whose your voice actor? James Spader?"

Chrys nodded toward a nearby machine that was struggling to get back up to its feet after the armored adventurer caused a miniature earthquake upon his landing, only to get tormented by the man's sheer stupidity. How annoying it must be to witness some guy just drop down such a huge height and remain unbothered. Just God of Rocks things, I guess.

The buzzing quiets the moment [ @Madison Freebird ] leaps from the parapets of the ruined castle. Nyx is expecting fear to rise smoke-like from the Sheriff's body as she sinks and plummets closer to the clash of swords and the casting of spells. It doesn't. There is no rush that assaults the elf's senses, no tingling at the tips of her fingers and along her gum line. Madison is as unafraid to make this leap of faith as she might be staring down a newborn kitten.

A muscle in Nyx's lip twitches, the upper curling back in disappointment as the cacophony of the swarm rises in her ears. She glowers at the mid-distance, her hand reaching out to a woman asking her to draw a card. It's the flash of magic from the card that brings her back, that quiets the legion skittering and buzzing and clicking in the gray matter of her brain. She is grateful for the silence, for the ability to think, and she won't waste it.

...Well, maybe just a bit.

Her violet gaze darts to the side, to the ranger [ @Aalam Abungu ] shooting where Madison had just stood a moment prior.

You'd think, Nyx says, forcing her voice to rise as she steps up to the edge of the parapet, some latent amusement making her tone warm and almost conversational. You'd think she'd stay up here. She has pistols for crying out loud. They aren't fucking melee weapons. She clicks her tongue, winks, and free-falls into the waiting arms of oblivion, only to shadow jump from mid-air to the ground. She stands slowly, exhales, fixes her duster with a sharp tug at the lapels, and unsheathes her rapier.

Her left arm is pushed back, the hand resting at the small of her back, her weight balancing on the balls of her feet as she wades into the carnage. Pin-points of fear across the battle map lead her body and her blade, the flash of steel against constructed flesh a welcomed distraction from the hive infesting her mind.
