Chrys was already on his way back down from the fourth floor when he heard the ringing in his ears, the words that barely made sense in his head, and the haunting scream from deep within the windmill. Clenching his jaw, he resisted the pain and the fear that crept up on him, focusing his mind instead on his friends' whereabouts, hoping they were all right and not in any immediate danger.

"Ayna? Kamala? Are you all right?"

When Chrys began to descend the same set of stairs from before, something suddenly jumped on his back, screaming in his ear. It felt warm and then cold but at the same time very chaotic, hard to control, definitely something with sentience. Or a semblance of which. Its flailing hands found their way on Chrys' eyes, but before it could do anything else, the Stalwart Defender managed to grab the Leaper, and in a fit of panic, threw it down the bottom of the windmill. The creature screeched and screamed and yelped and howled until its body made contact with the ground, and everything else became silent once more.

"What in the holy fuck was that? Did I... Oh, no."

Chrys doubled his speed down the stairs to check on the creature, hoping it was still conscious if it was in fact a living body and not some sort of monstrosity, but was soon met by a loud coughing from...everywhere. He looked around him but found no one. Chrys paused, swallowed air, and with wide eyes, stared further into the darkness. Nothing stared back. Nothing else stirred.

Deciding to ignore whatever that coughing was, he finally arrived on solid ground. Chrys heaved a sigh of relief, calming his racing heartbeat down. Slowly, however, he noticed something odd on the walls, as if some sort of red liquid had began to seep through it. Warily, Chrys made his approach. He reached out for the liquid on the walls. When it trickled down on a finger, he brought it closer to his eyes for a more thorough inspection. Is this...blood?

Another piercing scream, more like agonizing wailing this time, pierced throughout the interior of the windmill, and Chrys found himself taking a few steps back as the walls started to slowly crack and crumble. From a safe distance, he watched as something broke out of it. Well, more than a some thing. Two skeletons crawled out of the cramped space, fixing their jaws and parts as they rose on either side of a more formidable creature, an armored corpse of a man, the armor blatantly sinister and paired with a demon skull helmet, both having endured centuries of rust. As the corpse grunted and patted dust off of him, he turned to Chrys with a withered old grin. "Well, hello, Marcus. I see you're much better off, still alive and all." The skeletons did a pretty good impression of Jimmy Carr's laugh at that remark.

"Marcus? I'm not..."

Before the only living person in the room could explain himself, however, the skeletons both charged at him. Chrys screamed expletives at being caught off-guard. Manifesting the Claymore of the First Loyalist (Greatsword), he instinctively took a step back, and utilizing the stance to its fullest potential, performed a powerful downward smash that crushed the ground beneath the skeletons, sending shards of stone hurtling toward them.

❰ Sword of No Skill: Rumbling Descent! ❱

Aside from stopping their charge, the attack managed to destroy both minions just like that. Chrys really is a damn thicc motherfucker. Unfortunately for him, the head honcho was still standing, and it did not look that impressed. "You killed my sisters, Marcus. Prepare to die." The revenant readied its equally rusty sword before charging toward Chrys, who was too slow to react.

If only there was a really fast member of this party who can intercept the attack like a crazed animal... Oh, wait...

There was no time to lose. Ayna wasn't quite sure why or what even was going on, but she felt the need for speed. After an exchange of glances with @Kamala Graham and a brief nod, Ayna found herself rushing to where Chrys was. They found him just in time. Or at least that's what she thought, chose to believe. The Ravenous Revenant was already charging at their third wheel, but Ayna was goddamn faster.

"Oh, no, you <basseal honks> don't!"

Charging her Spear of Stormy Night (Polearm) with the very lightning coursing through her veins, she tried to intercept the revenant's charge, all while allowing the same lightning to consume her physical body as well. Trying to meet a charge head-on with another charge seemed like the appropriate course of action in the heat of the moment, but it only served to render the lancer vulnerable. Mostly because while the revenant's charge was directed appropriately, hers was a spur-of-the-moment reaction, a desperate attempt to save another by risking herself.

❰ True Teachings of Enlightningment: Abyssal Traversal ❱

Fortunately for Ayna, her gamble paid off. And then some. With thunderous fury, she managed to do what she had planned to, preventing Chrys' untimely demise and forcing their antagonist back and away from where they stood. Unfortunately for Ayna, her gamble took a lot out of her, sapping her strength and allowing the revenant's sword to pierce her arm. It was a cut deeper than a graze and much more painful, especially considering that the said sword was goddamned rusty.

"Ugh, son of a bitch! What the fuck is going on here, Chrys? Who, or what, are you even fighting?"

There were so many questions floating around in her head and so few answers. She wasn't even sure Chrys could help her with half of those. What she was sure of was that they had to focus on taking out the creature before him. Catching a glimpse of the bones near it only served to reinforce Ayna's belief. Is this monster the cause of all this?

Arriving at the scene right after @Ayna Nietzsche, Kamala's eyes grew wide in terror at the sight before her: a bunch of bones on the floor and a terrifying undead creature snarling at them all. Well, mostly at @Chrys and Ayna, mostly at Chrys, but a threat to one of them is definitely a threat to the entire party. Acting on instinct, she immediately went into her stance, which wasn't unlike a ballerina's pose, or what she would describe as holding an imaginary watermelon right in front of her, though her elbows were wide and arched, definitely not like holding an actual watermelon in front of you. Focus, Kamala. Take deep breaths.

"It's going to be all right, guys! I'm here now!"

First focusing on manifesting her magic weapon of choice, the Yladian's Hopeful Lamp (Focus), she then channeled through the very practical tool her illusory flora spell, manifesting a throbbing mushroom illusion, a bit larger and much darker than what one would imagine, drawing the revenant's attention away from her friends while also damaging its psyche. If it even had one.

❰ Illusory Flora: Diversity of Foliage ❱

Thankfully, it seemed to have one, as the revenant screamed in anguish. At the same time, green wisps of light from the mushroom illusion wafted around Chrys and Ayna, surrounding them both with a barely noticeable protective barrier and even healing them for a little bit.

❰ Present Manifested ❱

As if on cue, the mending spirit of nature activated Kamala's self-healing, which was as per usual accompanied by a visual of a mushroom spirit popping over her head and disappearing in a puff of mending spores, only this time, Ayna received the same blessing for even more healing! Mushrooms popping over cute girls' heads and it isn't even raining! But the revenant was a born party pooper, and as soon as it noticed both ladies looking much better than before, or at least it thought so, it unleashed a terrifying scream at Kamala that almost took her off her feet. Gah! My head!

Chrys heaved a sigh of relief at the sight of both his friends joining him for this fight, with @Ayna Nietzsche actually saving his butt by taking the revenant off of him with that crazed collision and @Kamala Graham healing him from his altercation with the revenant's...bony sisters, he guessed. In retrospect, perhaps splitting up was the worst idea ever, but to be fair, none of them knew this was a horror story. All they had to do was chase crows away. What the hell is all this business with skeletons and a revenant?

"No idea, to be honest, but we're here now. Best take this guy out as soon as possible and then we can talk amongst ourselves regarding what the hell's going on."

With that out of the way, Chrys held out the Claymore of the First Loyalist (Greatsword) in front of them, its length facing the snarling undead fury of the revenant. He watched the thing as it slowly regained its bearing, dusting itself off from Ayna's assault, and appearing rejuvenated if not refreshed despite the combined efforts of the girls. Is it healing itself? Chrys groaned. That's going to be annoying. Who comes up with these things?!

When their predator started to move toward them again, Chrys manifested his Thousand Sparkling Gold through his Auric Geomancy, not unlike what a spooked peacock would instinctively do, and willed jagged shards of the earth summoned from the dust and debris of the windmill's interior to rise in the air, float in front of him, and immediately rain on their aggressor the hardest they could. In his head, the sheer crushing and slashing impact would cripple the beast and perhaps even blind it with the grains of darker sand and dust that the shards always end up as.

❰ Thousand Sparkling Gold: Grand Scattering of Heavenly Splinter ❱

The revenant roared as it tried to protect itself with its arms while Chrys' rocks chipped away at his rusty armor. The barrage wasn't enough to fend off the creature, however, as it only served to fuel its anger. Glaring at Chrys, the damned thing actually just lunged at him after the armored adventurer's attack came to a halt. The revenant's outstretched fist rendered another stray rock to dust before colliding with Chrys' chin. Thank the gods for Kamala's protection. Just goes to show you: When you have a helm for your armor, wear it.

Heaving a sigh of relief thanks to @Kamala Graham's healing, Ayna gave her a wide, toothy grin, before all that was immediately replaced by a look of disbelief. Not just disbelief at @Chrys' explanation, or lack thereof, but at the audacity of the armored undead dude for interrupting their conversation. Well, to be fair, Chrys was throwing rocks at him, which would be very annoying for anyone who was getting rocks thrown at them, but still.

"Watch out!"

Time seemed to move ever slowly when the revenant just flat-out punched Chrys in the face. Ayna was right there, close enough to see the point of impact for herself, close enough to watch with eyes wide in horror and amusement the way Chrys' face snapped back as the rusty glove of the enraged undead struck his sculpted chin and muscular jaw without mercy. For a moment or two, she could have even laughed. If anyone of them deserved a straight punch to the face, it was Chrys and his terrible business advice. But she digressed.

With deft hands, she discreetly charged her Spear of Stormy Night (Polearm) as fast as she could and without the revenant knowing, pumping it with the very lightning coursing through her veins, before thrusting at the creature to keep it at bay. Her blade was sharp, her attack was refined, and it all came together quite smoothly.

❰ Dogma of the Dream ❱

The revenant was caught surprised by the quick move, forced to take a few steps back out of confusion, while Ayna just stood there, having switched to a stance of a trained and disciplined martial artist, one who seemed more than adept to take a few more men out with just her very flexible, very sharp, and very shocking weapon of choice.

"Ease up there, ya shamblin' undead scarecrow! Why the rush? Eternal damnation suits you. Wanna chat before I return you to hell permanently?"

The cheerful attitude she put on, a mask clearly, did not amuse the revenant. It tried to slash at her, too, but Ayna managed to duck most of the attack. Kamala's protection was still in effect, which made it easier than without. Does he have anything to do with the spirit board, the planchette, and those weird portraits on the second floor? What the hell were the people here doing back then?

Kamala could heal. Kamala always heals! Yet in the moment, when both her friends found themselves in the thick of battle, Kamala felt like she had to do more than just heal. Kamala had to fight, and on her terms, that simply meant protecting those that were fighting with her. Come on, come on! Focus, Kamala!

While the Yladian's Hopeful Lamp (Focus) floated in front of her, Kamala channeled her illusory flora spell, manifesting a throbbing mushroom illusion to draw the revenant's attention away from @Ayna Nietzsche as it damaged its psyche or spirit. Whichever worked best. Under the circumstances, she thought it best not to question the things she did not know. Or need to know. Not while they were fighting for their lives.

❰ Floral Mimesis ❱

Again, the revenant screamed in anguish at Kamala's metaphysical assault, but unlike before, only Ayna was surrounded by the green wisps of light from the mushroom illusion, a barely noticeable protective barrier that also healed her for a little bit. Truth be told, she could have repeated her stronger spell from earlier, but @Chrys didn't seem like he needed the support. He was a big burly man with big burly armor. He didn't need her doting plants and spores to make him appear less cool than he already did.

❰ Present Manifested ❱

Still, that did not stop her from including her friend, even if just for a little bit as well. As the mending spirit of nature activated her self-healing through a visual of a mushroom spirit popping over her head and then disappearing in a puff of mending spores, Kamala intentionally shared the blessing with Chrys. He would have probably balked at seeing it for himself on himself. Fortunately for her, he couldn't turn his head to look at his head. Or extend his eyeballs just to take a peak of what's going on over his head.

"Hurry! That thing might be prepping for some major power-up or something."

She even tried to distract his insecurities with an immediate call to action, hoping that the urgency of their battle would prevent Chrys from checking his own head. There was still the matter of what the thing was. Or what it wanted with them. But there was a time and place for everything. Maybe when it was gone, they could finally put their heads together, sans the illusory mushrooms, and come to know what was actually going on with this windmill.

While the revenant refused to reply to @Ayna Nietzsche, seemingly only having eyes for Chrys due to some sort of mistaken identity, Chrys himself was wishing the opposite. All that attention from an undead warrior didn't suit the armored adventurer. Unless the revenant was a beautiful woman or a wealthy client, Chrys did not care for its obsession. But Chrys @Kamala Graham's concern and believed the same. If it wanted his full attention, he'd have it all now in the form of a swing from Chrys' unnecessarily heavy claymore.

"Don't worry, I got it!"

Manifesting his Thousand Sparkling Gold through his Auric Geomancy, Chrys willed jagged shards of the earth beneath his very feet to rise in the air and float in front of him before hurling them all at the revenant at the same time he struck him with the Claymore of the First Loyalist (Greatsword), the embedded Excelled Crystal of Loyalty (Focus) glowing its trademark bright golden shade. The impact sent the revenant back and off his feet, the shards themselves exploding into grains of sand that immediately float around Ayna, boosting her defense.

❰ Thousand Sparkling Gold: Armillary Sphere Screen ❱

Warily, Chrys stood over the revenant's body, eyeing it all over to see if it was truly beaten. He even took a moment to poke the corpse with his massive blade, and once satisfied, when the body did not move, the armored adventurer turned to his friends to celebrate. Finally, they had taken the monster down. Finally, they had won the battle. Finally...

Chrys gulped at the sound of otherworldly groaning. Behind him, a thud. And another. And a third followed by the same groaning. The revenant rose back to its feet, pushing itself off of the ground. Chrys didn't even need to turn around to confirm it all. God fucking damn it. Why won't this thing die?! When he did, however, the revenant screamed right at his face, its rotting saliva an unpleasant slap to Chrys' face. Fortunately for him, his mouth and eyes were all closed. I fucking hate this place.

And then the revenant punched him in the face. Again. What a fucking asshole. "Marcus... Your end is nigh. I will drag you to the pits of hell myself. You will suffer for all eternity."

With both her friends protecting her, Ayna felt a sudden rush of adrenaline, as if she could do anything and everything she wanted at the moment. She soon felt aggravated by the revenant punching Chrys in the face, and although it was something she would have wanted to do herself, it wasn't the time or place to celebrate such a scene. She could still hear the panic in Kamala's voice, urging her to take her opportunity and finish this battle once and for all. So she did. Without any hesitation.

"Move, Chrys!"

It was bad enough that the undead motherfucker ignored her completely, but to not be its top priority in this fight? Was it all machismo? Some sort of male chauvinist pride bullshit? He thinks Chrys is the biggest threat to him because he's a man and I'm not! Well, I'll show him. I'll show all of them!

Roaring, Ayna lunged straight at the revenant with her lightning-charged polearm, getting as close as she could, perhaps too close for anyone's comfort. As soon as she was in range, she feigned a slash with her trademark weapon, only to drop it at the last minute and instead stab the damned asshole with the battle axe that Kamala had earlier found within the gutter, the same battle axe that Ayna had picked up prior to rushing to Chrys' aid. And yes, she stabbed the revenant with it, not cleave, not slash, not crush, but stab. Straight in his neck. Decapitating the annoying bastard from out of nowhere.

❰ Imperial Ritual ❱

With the revenant's head plopping to the ground in all its morbid glory, the body soon followed, dropping first to its knees with a loud thud before falling backward and spilling more of its rotten blood, spurting all over Ayna and perhaps even Chrys if he was close enough. Dunnstads' Duelist Debonair scowled in triumphant rage as she panted and panted and panted. She let the moment sink in for a few more seconds before wiping the disgusting liquid off her face and dropping the battle axe embossed with excessively salivating demonic toads. Was it over? It had to be, right?

"We're done here... Now can someone explain what the hell was that guy? Why was he calling you 'Marcus,' Chrys? Is there something you're not telling us?"

It was one thing to be interrogated by an angry Ayna. It was a totally different thing to be interrogated by a bloodied magia that appeared so perfectly calm and terrifying in all that red. Purple might be Ayna's favorite color but red didn't look that bad on her as well. Well, not unless you were the focus of all her ire, which was Chrys at the moment. Chrys might not enjoy seeing Ayna in red ever again.

Kamala's eyes grew wide in horror as she watched @Ayna Nietzsche decapitate the revenant with such skill and precision that it all seemed like it was second nature for her friend. Sure, she's seen her friend take out other monsters, but never this...clean. Or this violent. She stared at the head for a few more seconds, completely taken out of it, but after reassuring herself in her head that it was all just a game, just a bunch of pixels, she immediately resolved to do her thing and help in her own way. Don't freeze now, Kamala!

Channeling the mending spirit of nature, Kamala manifested a shielding barrier over their trio that would heal them over time, though she herself remained rooted where she stood. All of them were greeted with an illusory sanctuary, what her fellow Yladians have dubbed the "Garden of Gwyndolainn." The god, of course, never appeared, no trace of the horned stag or his wreathe in their physical form, but the warmth was ever present, the refreshing and soothing calmness of nature itself.

❰ Supplicant Spell of Support: Leaves of Ignorance-Breaking Truth ❱

When her spell had done its job, Kamala heaved a sigh of relief. She stole a quick glimpse of the revenant's corpse and saw that it remained unmoving, the head still separated from its shoulders. From the corner of her eyes, she saw the windows brighten, as the treachery of ravens they were sent to chase off slowly dwindled in number until it was no more. Quote the raven.

"I think I might know who Marcus is..."

Kamala fidgeted with her inventory before showing the others what she had found on the second floor, from the makeshift office where she had heard a strange coughing. Before @Chrys and Ayna, she laid out her hoard: the deed to the windmill, a key of sorts, the 4-foot-long silver chain necklace, a stick, and a pistol with a box of bullets. The deed included the rights to the surrounding land, information on the land's features, the non-noteworthy name of the windmill, and several other names that seemed to be of its prior owners, including one "Marcus Damara."

"I found these on the second floor, in an office, with a merchant's scale, several blunt writing tools, and a tiny, framed portrait of a woman sitting on the same desk they were on. There were also other documents, business and personal papers, though they too old not to get destroyed by a simple touch."

Kamala shrugged, not sure what to make of all that information. As far as she could gather, the windmill seemed to have been abandoned by its previous owners with no care as to what they left behind. Did they leave in a rush? All of them? But what about the revenant and the skeletons with him? Who was Marcus Damara? She turned to the unmoving corpse on the floor and shook her head, making her guess out loud.

"I'm starting to think, whoever that guy was, he was trapped here by Marcus Damara? He seemed to be really agitated by that... Chrys, where did you get that armor? That's not yours, is it?"

She had primarily focused on the idea that Chrys resembled Marcus Damara, but now that she had caught a glimpse of what their third wheel was wearing, perhaps it was a more simple answer that they had not noticed until then. Perhaps it wasn't that Chrys resembled the man that had trapped the revenant in the windmill. Perhaps it was that he was wearing armor that could have belonged to Marcus? Either way, the ravens had all flown away. They had done their job. The nightmare was finally over...wasn't it?

Before Chrys could come up with a proper response to the revenant, which would have probably taken hours if not days, @Ayna Nietzsche took its head off clean. He was at a loss for words when he realized what she had done, and even after @Kamala Graham brought him back to top health, he just stood there, jaw dropped, eyes wide in a combination of terror and surprise. What did he expect, though? That they would end this with a song and dance number? With everyone hugging each other after solving their differences through the power of friendship?

No... It kept coming back... Its head had to be chopped off... That was rule number one in most zombie movies, and all three of them were at least genre-savvy enough to know that very useful information. Maybe he was just dumb. Maybe he thought he could continue speaking some sense into it. Maybe he thought wasting more of their time was the best course of action to take. Hm? He simply shook his head at Ayna's questioning, not sure what else to add.

Kamala's enlightening revelations, however, proved to be just enough inspiration to jog his memory and spur his brain into realizing a few things that he earlier had not. Marcus Damara? He was not familiar with the name, though to be fair, he was not familiar with this place prior to being lured here by the elf. With the treachery of ravens finally gone from this windmill, at least that was what it seemed to him, could another treachery have taken place, rooted itself in the darkness of this long abandoned ruin? God, I hate creepy towers.

"No, it's not. I found it in the attic, laid out on the floor, in the center of a faded chalk drawing..."

There it is. When the words spilled out of his mouth, he realized something strange. A crimson ring mail left alone in the center of a faded chalk drawing? Was it a summoned item? Where then was its summoner? He immediately took off the armor and let it fall on the ground with a loud, disgusting thud. Catching a glimpse of the revenant's headless corpse, its head still inches from it, Chrys swallowed air and warily stowed his massive claymore around his back.

"I also found a witch's stone on a ledge off the roof of this place. You guys think me lighting that up had anything to do with...that guy coming back to life?"

It made no sense to him. A witch's stone was only meant to provide a makeshift place for witches to rest during their nightly travels. Even then, it was just another one of those mundane architectural superstitions, one that he was familiar with in real life because of where he lived as a kid and in this world because of his Geomancy. Surely, it had nothing to do with whatever the revenant was, whatever it wanted to do, which at this point seemed to him was murder whoever wore the damned armor.

Or maybe he was brought back by the armor? Doesn't explain the ravens, though... Unless they were just trying to keep people away from this cursed place?

Ayna put a hand on @Kamala Graham's head as she browsed the items the elf had revealed to them. Nothing from that roster really stood out to her, though Kamala's mention of a woman's portrait struck her from out of nowhere. Back in that room that Ayna had investigated were a myriad of faded portraits. Could the same woman be in one of those forgotten photos? Wouldn't surprise me if she was.

"Chalk drawing, huh?"

Ayna was starting to realize this windmill might have been more than just your run-of-the-mill windmill. Between the faded chalk drawings, upon which some strange red armor was abandoned, and the creepy room with the portraits and the spirit board, all signs pointed to the occult, a dark hobby having taken place within these walls. Was someone trying to summon a demon? Or was Kamala right and someone was in fact trying to keep someone else trapped here? Ravens would know more about this than us, and that's just messed up.

"Nah... Me returning that planchette to the spirit board I found would make more sense than you lighting up some random stone on the roof."

She then turned to Kamala, heaving a sigh, remembering a question from her that she had not answered due to the interruption of the revenant's awakening.

"You asked me how I knew about that axe in the gutter? That same spirit board. Planchette moved on its own and told me where to find it."

Ayna shuddered at the thought of something eerie, a spiritual puppeteer, pulling their strings. She was more comfortable with more physical adversaries, monsters she could stab and punch and electrocute. Facing something without a physical body, that was supernatural in nature and being, now that's just something she'd be at a loss for what to do. How do you even stab a ghost? Hopefully, her lightning could hurt ghosts.

"We should probably leave now. Maybe cover this place's entrance in the meantime and inform the village owners, or whoever wanted the ravens gone, about the stuff we found. I'd rather not spend the night in this creepy hellhole."

She stole another glimpse at the revenant's corpse, its head inches from the rest of it, and scowled. The place could burn for all she cared. Ayna wasn't comfortable with supernatural, dark crap. At least not now. She was a woman of science in the real world, and here, she was more comfortable with her lightning and her polearm. Whoever Marcus Damara was, he should be glad they solved his problem for him. If he was still alive. Not my problem, though.

With everything on the table, Kamala started to realize what had been going on in this windmill and maybe even why it was abandoned. The planchette and the spirit board that @Ayna Nietzsche had encountered pointed out that something occult had been at play maybe all those years ago. Marcus Damara might have been the one to own the windmill, or maybe he was someone else's grandfather. Regardless, the armor that @Chrys found was most likely his, considering the revenant mistook him for Marcus while he was wearing it. The way Chrys found the armor, left abandoned on some chalk drawing, suggested it was part of an occult ceremony as well.

In her head, Kamala rationalized that Marcus Damara had killed or maybe just trapped the revenant and hid its battleaxe in the gutter. Maybe Marcus was the one trying to use the planchette to contact someone from beyond the veil but the revenant answered. Maybe someone else tried to use the planchette to contact Marcus Damara, who had already passed after securing the revenant's imprisonment, and would later secure the armor as well as a sort of contingency should the revenant awaken as it did. But who was the revenant? Some questions might never be answered.

Agreeing with Ayna's sentiment, Kamala joined the others outside, where they used their respective abilities to seal the door and windows of the abandoned windmill. With the ravens gone, it seemed like a good contingency on their end to prevent any tragedy from happening to anyone curious about this place. Once they were done, they met with the village elders, with Kamala, of course, having to deliver the news of their exploit.

"Greetings! I am Kamala Graham of Viridian Fields, and these are my friends, Chrys and Ayna Nietzsche. We came here as per the request of one of your farmers to fend off the treachery of ravens that had been plaguing the windmill. We were successful in doing that, but does anyone know the name... Marcus Damara?"

No one responded. Only silence met Kamala's curiosity. Heaving a sigh, she proceeded to change the topic, but before she could do so, an aged hand was raised in the air. "The ones who owned the windmill are descendants of Marcus Damara. He was one of the founders of this village, but over time, he mysteriously disappeared." The old woman called out, struggling to make her voice heard, though the elf and her friends managed to piece it all together.

"Heard he was an occultist?" Someone else chimed in. "Heard he made a deal with a demon and they betrayed each other!" Soon, the room was filled with a cacophony of theories, all with a basic premise of what could be truth lying underneath: Marcus Damara, for one reason or another, tried to make a pact with perhaps the revenant, which failed. Whatever went wrong, Marcus ended up trapping the revenant in his windmill before leaving in the attic the same armor he used to fight the revenant, and in the gutter, the same battleaxe he used to fight the revenant.

Or maybe the battleaxe was the revenant's own, and Marcus tried to hide it. Then his descendants tried to contact him using the planchette but it was the revenant who answered, so they tried to abandon the cursed place. Or something along those lines. Either way, their job there was done. It was time to leave for greener, much more peaceful pastures.

"Thank you for coming with me, friends! Are you both ready to go home with me? There could be a feast waiting for us at the Fields!"

There definitely would be. Colleen had promised her great food when she returned, and she was returning with friends! Even if the feast would not be that massive, they could add to it, helping prepare more food and drinks and having fun along the way. The more, the merrier, they always say. In this case, it would be a welcomed respite from the darkness, the treachery, that they had just survived.

Finally... It was over... Chrys heaved a deep sigh of relief after helping the others seal the windmill temporarily. His proficiency in Geomancy allowed him to literally close the doors and windows with rock and stone, boulders even, pieces of earth that would be hard to force undone by normal means. With @Kamala Graham's Nature Magic and @Ayna Nietzsche's Aeromancy, no one would find themselves unintentionally awakening the revenant ever again. No one without magic anyway, and if the revenant could even be reawakened, though that last part was tricky to confirm with their jumbled-up collection of facts and theories.

At the makeshift town hall meeting, however, things began to grow clearer for him, and with the villagers' own theories and facts, he was able to paint a pretty logical picture in his head, not unlike the one Kamala had. The bottom line was to never dabble in the occult, in dark magic, especially if you don't have contingencies planned ahead for what could go wrong. And there will always be a million things that could go wrong when dealing with such creatures... Whatever the Damara family's reason for getting caught up with supernatural bullshit time and time again, that's their problem. He wasn't getting paid to delve deeper into that mystery.

"You know I'm always up for a free meal!"

Chrys grinned as he and the others left Vikform and its now-sealed windmill to their devices, the treachery of ravens now gone, though the mystery of the windmill's own treachery still remains. Was Marcus Damara the treacherous one, having summoned the revenant and then taking it down for whatever reason? Or was the revenant the treacherous one, perhaps having betrayed its summoner, only to fall to the latter's trap? Maybe neither was, and Damara's descendants were the ones who treacherously awakened old wounds when they could have been healed by time? Whatever the case was, Chrys got the job done, got paid for getting the job done, and was now getting fed for free. In the end, I always win.
