Scythe Mastery ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ Spirit Magic ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ Aeromancy ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ Corrupt

The sounds, the flashes of light, even the touch of the air upon her as a sudden breeze picked up slightly all overwhelmed Kyra. She almost didn't hear the question posed by Moonsong, trying to figure out what was coming towards them. Need to focus, but holy shit this hurts.

She gritted her teeth against the pain, squinting into the darkness in an attempt to find anything that could be considered a threat. Against the constant flash of lights from the braziers, her eyes caught sight of a form, hovering on the edge of the dais on the opposite side.

"Moonie...there's someone on the other side of the room. I think...they're staring at us..."

The whisper came out as more of a shout as she tried to speak just above the noise - having to overdo it a bit just to be heard. Whoever was watching them didn't seem to react to her words, either unable to hear them or not caring at having been spotted. As hard as she tried to peer through the overwhelming lights and darkness, she couldn't make out anything beyond a figure in a robe, defining details lost to her.

"Should we...try talking to them? They don't seem to be aggressive, at least not yet!"

The constant flashing light from the braziers seemed to disorient Kyra so much. If they stayed here, they'll be sitting ducks to an incoming attack. When the braziers light up, it was too bright to see anything, but when those dim, it's too dark.

"Moonie...there's someone on the other side of the room. I think...they're staring at us..."

Where?

The songstress quickly turned, being able to recognize someone amidst the club rave party lighting inside an underground tomb. A person wearing a dark robe. Okay, that's not ominous in the slightest bit at all.

"Should we...try talking to them? They don't seem to be aggressive, at least not yet!"

"Yes, `yet` is the keyword, Kyra. I'm not taking chances."

With a single hum of her voice, her weapons spun around and converged, surrounding and pointing at the mysterious person. "Who are you?" Moonsong shouted, to which no response was given. The person did not even move a single finger.

"The silent type, huh? Then let's see what your face looks like."
The brunette controlled a dagger, trying to flick the hood off so both of the girls could take a good look at the face. Something briefly flashed under the darkness of the hood as the dagger tried to move toward it.

A shape of a skull.

A purplish spherical shield suddenly manifested around the mysterious person, sending all the blades Moonsong trained on them flying. "What... the fuck was that? DId you see that?" The figure in the robe just stood there, watching them menacingly.

Kyra had seen it. The flash, there for an instant and gone the next. A face that she had more familiarity with than she liked to admit. A face that she had imagined herself after, in a way. The robes, the skull, the only thing that was missing was the scythe.

Moonie...I don't think the Reaper is a person...I think this is an actual Reaper...

Her voice was hushed, subdued as her mind raced. Facing such a thing was impossible, if you were to believe the legends, myths and stories that surrounded the creatures. The best you could hope for, was that it wasn't coming for you - there was no fighting Death, once it decided it was your time to pass on.

If that really is a Reaper, an actual Reaper...well, the good news is that it's not after us. I think. So we should be safe...but...

Her voice drifted away as she considered the implications. Reapers were usually only visible to those who were being claimed, or to those who had the Death Sight. Her brow furrowed as she considered it. Did the game, or the designers get something wrong...? Or is this actually a creature we can fight? She didn't like that thought. It had already turned away Moonsong's attack like it was nothing.

You have interrupted the ceremony. I will let you leave, alive, if only you can answer three questions. Are you afeared?

The words were cold, somehow. Cold enough that it made Kyra shiver in response to hearing them, something unnatural in their very tone, the way they were muttered. Muttered, not shouted, not spoken, but muttered - as if there was no concern about them being heard, regardless of any noise. And so does Death come...A mere whisper on the wind, heard only by those it has chosen...

"An actual reaper?" Moonsong let out what sounded like a nervous laugh. "Kyra, I already said if we meet the actual Reaper...." The grip on her hands tightened, shaking uncontrollably. Not of fear; but of fury. "... I will punch it in the face."

Looking at it the investigation yields no result, as whatever it was shrouded with scrambled the identification system. Even its aura felt like nothing; cold, silent, and dark like the end of all things. "I don't fear anything." The songstress summoned a magical greatsword and quickly sent it towards the robed figure at full speed. "I don't even fear death!" But as the arcane weapon made contact with the shield, it shattered without causing any visible damage.

Impossible.

Shallow words, full of resentment towards the concept of Death itself.

It was a shame what happened to you, but Death is fair, as is Life.

Why the fuck would an actual Reaper take old people back here for whatever this ceremony was, anyway? Shouldn't they just literally reap their souls back to where they came from? If anything, this dungeon just made their credibility lower.

For now, let's just entertain them.

"Look who's talking, a pale imitation." The songstress taunted. "Next question, skullface."

No reaction. If this was a person, their tone would've shifted a little bit. But the way it muttered its questions didn't even have the slightest bit of mockery in it.

Little girls, there is a soul in every being.

Where is yours located?

The flashing, the siren. Both didn't stop at all and continued to wreck their senses.

Kyra didn't like this. Moonsong was furious - not the battle fury that one would expect when facing danger. This grew from something deeper, some pain that was within her very core. Kyra's eyes shifted between the woman beside her, and the creature on the other side of the ritual. An actual Reaper...may the gods help us if this is true...

Moonie...if that thing is an actual Reaper...if that thing is really what I think it is...you're not punching it in the face. That is Death Incarnate. Not a thing of this world, nor the next ones...something in between, something meant to guide...and I think we walked into that guidance...Look at the lines connecting the braziers to the soul of this person...they're strong...so strong...

Kyra could see them, hovering in the air before her like they were actual ropes. Stronger than any connection her spirit magic had made with anyone else. Stronger than anything she could've imagined. Whatever was happening here, whatever this was...it was overwhelming.

And then it spoke. The question was simple enough, but it jarred Kyra nonetheless. Where was her soul? What did that mean? Her eyes scanned the figure, pointlessly looking for an answer in its form, in its existence. Not that she would find anything there...

My soul...is in the connection I make with those around me. The very...essence, of what I give to them. So that they may face you, head held high, without hindrance. So that I can face you, with no regrets in my life...

The words were out of her mouth before she knew what she was saying - a shocked look on her face as she spoke. Where did that come from?

One carries with it the essence of healing, of helping those around them. The other, an essence of tragedy, of corruption, and of violence.

And yet, one is of kind with the other, and so not the twin of that which stands beside it. I ask again; Where is your soul?

It's funny in situations like this, it's Kyra who had the better common sense, while the brunette was currently gazing the death in the eyes if this person was the real deal by relentlessly taunting it. "Yeah, he can guide me to the fucking hell, see if I care."

Where is her soul located?

The question took Moonsong out of her rage, a question she never really had an answer for. "I..." She trailed off for a while before her eyes lit back again with wrath. "Why do you even care?!" A dark greatsword, Gramr, manifested on her back. She's serious.

One carries with it the essence of healing, of helping those around them. The other, an essence of tragedy, of corruption, and of violence.

And yet, one is of kind with the other, and so not the twin of that which stands beside it. I ask again; Where is your soul?

The third question. Their chance to walk away.

Yet Moonsong walked towards the figure with her greatsword dragged along the floor, not heeding any of the warnings Kyra gave her. "My soul..." The brunette choked, like she was truly searching for an answer; the answer she doesn't have, yet. Her aura suddenly burns bright like the explosion of a star as she dashed towards the mysterious figure, swinging her main weapon with all her might. "... wherever it is, you'll never get it!"

The purple fire on the braziers suddenly turned off, along with the haunting siren. The place became pitch-black, save for the glowing hair of Moonsong. An emotional response came back echoing through the chamber, almost like a father disappointed with his children.

I gave you choice.

You chose the rage. So be it.

Moonsong was escalating, the fury within her become visible in ways that Kyra couldn't help but be amazed with. It seemed like her very essence burned with the fury, as if her very core being was rage. She stepped after Moonsong as the girl slowly crossed the room, trying to make her way closer to the Reaper, ignoring Kyra's warnings about the danger of the thing.

And then it spoke the words that froze Kyra's core. You have chosen rage. So be it. She'd heard that before, somewhere. Her mind raced as she tried to remember, tried to pinpoint why that phrase stuck out in her mind. There was something about it...

Moonie! Moonsong! Stop! Wait stop!

She didn't stop, and Kyra found herself racing after the other, desperation in her voice as she tried to figure out a way to stop the girl, tried to find a way to halt the fury that was emanating from her. She could see the hatred, the anger, the emotions that were essentially leaking from Moonsong, some sort of underlying pain that pushed her forwards, forced her towards the Reaper.

Dayeong! STOP! It's a trap!

The words escaped her lips without thought, without consideration, the warning coming with a pleading, a desperate tone that bespoke Kyra's own emotional state. She knew what would happen if Moonsong reached the Reaper, and she was running out of options.

The purple shield around the mysterious person disappeared, as if the person was confident that the strike wouldn't harm them at all. Moonsong's greatblade accelerated into a downwards swing, with a power strong enough to cut a vehicle open.

It's a trap!

The brunette heard Kyra calling by her real name, but showed no signs of slowing down. She did not stop, in fact, that very attack destroyed the ground near her. Her swing deliberately missed an inch from their shoulder, cutting deep straight into the stone floor. "That would be what you wanted, wouldn't it?" Moonsong's wrathful aura shooting from her back slowly subsided.

Control, impressive.

She grinned, looking more like a maniac rather than a cheerful person, looking straight at the face shrouded by darkness. "Looks like the death does not fear death." The visage beyond the veil flashed once again, showing its emotionless gaze. "Explain, what is all this?" They wouldn't be able to get here without an invitation. There must be a purpose here.

She'd taken three steps forward, her hand slowly raising in response to Moonsong's continued drive towards the Reaper. She'd called out, tried to breakthrough, but she wasn't sure if Moonsong had heard her or not. That was...until the blade slammed into the ground beside the Reaper, an almost wild smile on Moonsong's face as she spoke to the thing.

This is the final journey. This soul leaves this world for the next stage of life.

Kyra waited for more, for the Reaper to continue talking, to explain something. She had no idea why they had been drawn here, why so many from this specific village had been taken, not even the reasoning as to what purpose their presence would bring to being here.

Why...why did you bring us here, then?

There was a pause, as if the thing was considering the question - or considering the fact that it had been questioned. When it did answer, it did so with the same passive voice, the lack of emotion, lack of care, as if everything around it was menial.

Starcalled, Traveller, Player. You are known by many names, but there is one by which you are truly revered for; Deathless. The mortals of this world consider you infallible, as you do not die. Or so they think. I am here, to remind you of what awaits you, should you meddle too much in this world.

A sudden flare of light, so bright that Kyra had to cover her eyes in order to avoid going blind. When she looked again, the fire in the pillars had disappeared - gone as if they had never existed. With it, the body that had hovered in the air, and the robed figure that had stood on the other side of the dais. Her eyes shifted to Moonsong, trying to figure out what had just happened.

Were...were we just brought her to...remind us that we can die?

None of it made sense, and Kyra found her mind grasping for answers, for anything logical. Anything that would make this entire experience...make sense.

Yup, skeletor did not explain anything at all. The fucking Reaper didn't even tell them about the disappearances. The only thing the otherworldly being explained was his purpose, which every sane person knows; to guide.

Wait, maybe the Reaper wasn't involved after all? Or did they just stumble into the real fucking Reaper while searching for an impostor?

"Maybe," Moonsong commented, as the lights went out. Creating a miniature star that illuminated the room, the brunette inspected the pillars, looking for more clues. "We travelers tend to fight fate, to escape from death. But it was only a part of our life." Yeah. If she was the Reaper, she would be pretty upset if some group of people kept defying death.

There's this weird calmness as the armored adventurer explained her views, a complete 180 degrees from her earlier attitude, as if the lashing out moment was only to test if the Reaper was the real deal or not.

"Or maybe, it was just telling us to live life, and enjoy what we have while it lasts. The Reaper is not malevolent, after all." She finished inspecting and nothing worth mentioning was found. Snuffing the star out, she pointed to the wooden door that was open. "Anyway, we still don't have the answer to the disappearance. All that skullface did was help whoever that person was into the next world, right? We still have the case of kidnapping."

"Two more corridors to investigate, let's go."

Kyra hesitated, her eyes locked on the pillars as Moonsong spoke. Thoughts racing through her mind as she tried to piece together the things that the creature had said. Unlike Moonsong, Kyra had no doubts about what they had just encountered. It was too close in description. She managed to shake herself as Moonsong called her onwards, mentioning that there was more to explore. Missing old folks...right.

Let's just hope we find something...or someone.

She turned back to the corridor, making her way further down the way they had gone, bypassing an empty room that was covered in dust and debris, clearly something that had not been entered in a long time. She was still lost in thought when she realised that she had come to a stop, facing a dead-end wall, and inscription on it in what appeared to be dark coloured paint. Or blood.

Lost in the Dark, One Finds the Key

She glanced back at Moonsong, left eyebrow raised in an unspoken question. This is one weird crypt...next thing a clown is going to jump out at us or something...

Never anything easy, is it? Couldn't just walk in and find them all playing like...go fish, or something? Having a party? Just lost in the woods like typical dementia patients?

Moonsong touched the writing, which was somehow still wet. "What the fuck." She quickly wiped her fingers on the wall.

It would actually be nice if all the old people were hanging around playing bingo or something. Sadly, the appearance of the Reaper indicated that something strange was indeed conducted inside this underground tomb. "I do not appreciate this horror." She said straight-faced, as if she was getting tired of the scary things here.

"Let's see. Lost in the Dark, One Finds the Key"

No matter how long the brunette spent pondering, the cipher didn't make any sense to the woman. The dark? "Any bright ideas?"

Wait, brightness. Darkness?

"Huh, let's try this," Moonsong muttered without explaining. Using her magic, she snuffed out every lit torch around the corridor, before turning off the light emitted from her own magic. The place was then pitch-black for a while, before a reddish light sparkled on the floor a few feet from them.

Bingo?

"We are already this far, Kyra. Better assume that everything is a trap," The songstress knelt down, touching the red light. "And spring it, anyway."

Darkness. It was so sudden, that Kyra's eyes almost didn't have time to adjust, and just when they had started to do so, the faint red glow had begun from the floor. She had already started towards it when Moonsong intercepted her, speaking about assuming and activating traps, all in the same sentence. She'd shrugged in response, before remembering that in the dark Moonsong likely couldn't see her.

No way around it...let's do this.

Something about this whole thing was making Kyra uneasy. Between the encounter with the Reaper, and now this...what had seemed like a simple search and rescue, was turning into something far more complex. In ways that she wasn't enjoying. Just be ready for anything...Moonie's life may depend on it...

The wall grated at Moonsong did something with the light on the floor, before opening to...another hallway, this one as empty as the one they were currently in - the only difference were the torches still lit upon the walls along it, seemingly unaffected by whatever Moonsong had done to extinguish the ones on this side.

Anti-climatic...no complaints here, though. No old folks, either. Guess that means we keep pushing inwards and onwards, at least for now...

Kyra gave a shrug before stepping into the new area, hearing a slight clicking sound beneath her step as she did so. Almost immediately, the entire hallway before them was filled with arrows tinkering into the far wall - one close enough to Kyra's face to cause her hair to shift slightly from the force of wind that had expelled when it fired.

Ohhhkay...do not like that...uhm....

She stepped back, lifting her foot to find the stone she had stepped on marked, a red circle on it. She could see a few others ahead with similar red circles, and some that had blue crosses. Lastly, the remainder of the tiles were marked with green skulls.

Well, that's not foreboding at all...thoughts? Normally I'd say green is good, but...skull....

Behind the wall was another corridor. No surprises there, this place was certainly made to hide things, but why leave behind clues? Slowly, the feeling of horror was gone and replaced by a scooby-doo fantasy. "Yeah, let's push on."

Not even two steps were taken deep into the second corridor, arrows fired from the wall towards them. It was fortunate enough that they were not in the target area. "Okay, now that's new. Let's be careful from now on." Traps mean there was something really important here to hide, after all. Moonsong examined the stone Kyra stepped on, finding a glowing red circle on it. Other stones have blue crosses and green skulls.

"Huh, at least now we know the red circle is bad."

The first room was lit in blue. Then purple. This one has blue, red and green. "Is this secretly an underground night club? Gamer's man cave?" Moonsong asked genuinely. "What's with these RGB lights?"

Green Skull or Blue Cross? There's a fifty-fifty chance that there might be another trap.

"Let's go."

Two floating greatswords manifested, floating a foot above the ground supported by her astramancy's gravity force. "Hop on," Moonsong ordered, while stepping on one. After they both got on the swords, the makeshift hoverboard slowly glided across the corridor, bringing them safely to the other side. "What?" The brunette looked at Kyra while chuckling. "I don't plan to entertain whoever built those contraptions."

Her questioning gaze shifted into a shrug. She wasn't going to argue skipping over traps, if it meant safety. The hovering transports had brought them to the far side of the corridor that had ended in a T-intersection, placing back on unmarked tiles, theoretically safe zones. A quick glance around, and Kyra was heading to the left, turning to look back at Moonsong as she began walking.

When in doubt...go the dominant direction, right?

What she didn't mention aloud, was the soul line that had appeared in her vision - thin, barely visible, but definitely leading in this direction. It wasn't much to go on, but it meant that something was this direction. For Kyra, that was enough of a guide, when they were in a place that was supposedly devoid of anything living.

Still...best to be safe, right? Wouldn't want to walk into another of those Reap-

Her words stopped short as the soul line in her vision suddenly strengthened intensely, leading directly into a room on her right, a room that was engulfed in darkness. She stopped her forward movement at the edge of the doorway, glancing back at Moonsong with a nervous look. She was just about to mention the line that she had been following, when the room began to glow, a soft blue light reaching towards the hallway.

Kyra ducked her head into the doorway, looking for the source of the light. It didn't take long to find what she was looking for, the thing seemingly floating in the middle of the room. She pulled herself back out, looking at Moonsong with a wide, devilish grin.

So...how do you feel about ghosts?

"Dominant direction is left?" She asked. Don't blame her, she dropped out of high school, remember? "You're sure it's not to the right?" Moonsong followed Kyra from behind. It seems that the purple-haired fox was pretty confident that there was something at the end of this path.

They walked, soon approaching a doorway. "Why not? It's not like the Reapers are bad. They have jobs, you know." Even funnier coming from the brunette, who apparently was unfazed that they previously brushed with the guide of the dead. Maybe because she had stared Death right into her eyes that one time. "Kyra?" She called out, as the vixen stopped her speech and looked into the doorway.

Uneasy, the songstress waited for a while before Kyra finally pulled her head out of the doorway. Upon hearing the fox teasing her once again, Moonsong exhaled deeply while closing her eyes, probably asking God to forgive her for what she would do. "Kyra, I told you—"

Bam.

"—don't pull that thing on me again. And I don't fear ghosts." She delivered a punch straight into the woman's stomach. Not with a powerful, serious force, but it would at the very least make her flinch, serving as a warning. "Why are you asking me about ghosts—Ok, that's new." Moonsong decided to peek around and surprise, the glowing thing in the middle.

"Ok, we don't have any plan for this, right?" She thought for a while, before nonchalantly walking into the room. "Fuck it, let's just go try to ask that thing."

Owwww...I should...probably warn her when I'm being...serious... She whimpered slightly as the fist slammed into her - not overly powerful, but strong enough that it made Kyra react, her stomach muscles tensing in response. Moonsong had already begun to pass through and into the room, suddenly realising that the question hadn't been made in jest.

Slowly, carefully so as not to instigate more pain with her movements, Kyra turned and followed, stopping a few steps short of the hovering ghost-like thing. The wince on her face as much from the pain still lingering, as the bright light that the spectre was giving off against the otherwise dark area.

I did ask you...oh nevermind. Anyways...what do you think we should, you know, ask it? I mean, it seems pretty rude to say, 'hi ghost why are you here, are you looking-

Her sarcastic questioning was interrupted as another, softer voice filled the air, causing Kyra to spin and look at the spectre.

You talk a lot for one who wanders into another's domain...perhaps you should consider listening, more than speaking.

Kyra snarled in response - partially a reaction of fear, partially a reaction of dislike at being scolded, yet again. She glanced over at Moonsong, before deciding that she was likely the better communicator anyways.

Alright...my bad, sorry for that. We're-I'm not used to spectres like yourself speaking up out of nowhere. Sorry, that was rude of us.

The thing nodded in response to her words, but appeared to wait to hear more. Oh look it can listen, maybe you should learn from it... She snarled internally at herself, as much annoyed at the voice as to the fact that it was likely correct, at least somewhat.

So...why are you here? Why haven't you made the next steps?

The thing seemed to consider her question, the head turning to look at the room around them before it answered, as if taking its time to formulate a proper response.

I...have not been summoned yet. I await the guidance to the next life, but have not seen the guide itself. Although, I have heard...that he is busy, as of late.

Busy? The guide, busy with other things other than guiding? As of late?

Ok, something is definitely off. Was he preoccupied with something even he couldn't handle easily?

"Yeah, it'll be a problem if you're just stuck here." She muttered, before turning to Kyra. "Looks like we gotta figure it out. If we left things like this, the balance of life and death might tip. Or something like that."

The Reaper probably wanted some things to be taken care of. Who else left those clues for them?

"Uh, so, do you see any suspicious person lately? How long have you been in here, actually?" Moonsong quickly faced the specter, who was patiently waiting for its turn to be guided into the afterlife. The ghost pondered for a while, before answering.

I have seen no one. I... also don't know how much time has passed here. A week?

The brunette nodded, as if questioning a ghost was not a weird thing to do at all. "Alright, we'll try to find whatever was wrong." She casually waved goodbye to the spirit, before motioning to Kyra to return to the previous corridor. "Let's check that one, then?"

She stepped out into the hallway, taking a few steps away from the room in order to ensure that they wouldn't be overheard, before turning and looking at Moonsong. Her expression carried a concerned look, and she glanced back towards the room even as she spoke to Moonsong.

I don't like the idea that a Reaper is somehow...failing to help people to the other side. Nothing should inhibit that, theoretically...

She turned back to look at Moonsong fully, her words taking on an extremely serious tone as she spoke them out carefully, making sure to pause between each statement.

The only thing that I can think of, is that they're being hidden away. Hidden, so that a Reaper could not locate them and guide them to the afterlife. Which means that something powerful is doing this.

She glanced back towards the room suddenly, a thought popping into her head as she considered the possibilities. She tried to trace the image back through her mind, to place the two side by side, but she couldn't be entirely sure.

That one said that they'd been here for about a week...which would correspond almost perfectly with a disappearance of an older woman from the area - this same time, seven days ago. Could...it be one of the people who went missing?

Her brow furrowed as she considered the implications. Why would someone be stealing away the elderly...and what did they gain by not having them pass on to the afterlife? What good are ghosts- She gasped suddenly, exclaiming aloud the idea that had just come to her mind.

Soul magic! They plan on taking the life force of the ghosts, to extend their own life!

"Hiding from the reaper?" Someone couldn't be that powerful, being able to hide from death itself. "Maybe a magical artifact is at play here." Moonsong theorized.

Her eyes scanned the report of missing individuals, confirming Kyra's deduction.

"Yeah, Lavender, missing from a week ago." The implication of imprisoning near-dead and dead people didn't sit well with her, especially if their lifeforce is being drained. "We need to move fast then!"

They quickly made their way back to the three-way corridor junction, but this time they went for the corridor where the fox didn't sense any life from. If the perpetrator could hide from the Reaper, there's no way any magic could detect them. "That's why the Reaper sounded so pissed."

This time, the hallway ended with a massive metallic door, sealed with multiple chains. "This might be it." The brunette looked at the beastfolk, both of them preparing to breach the door. "You ready?"
