This man was dead.

Ash smelled it immediately. No matter how lively he looked or how energetic his frantic pleas were, there was no hiding the smell of death fouling the air around him.

The information the village had given him about the situation was sparse. A group of prospectors had delved into an old mine, hoping to find things that the previous miners had missed. They'd trusted aging beams and trusses to hold, and that had been their final mistake.

That was when the wailing started, and the man had appeared. The leader of that band, and the one who had come up with the idea in the first place. Stories had begun to spread about him luring people into the canyon to help his comrades, only for those well meaning souls to be buried alive themselves.

The villagers had caught him before he could get the cart back to Finweald. Somehow, his ability to 'handle' ghosts had gotten out, and they'd practically begged him for his help.

Not your problem, of course. But you've always had problems turning people down.

"Please, help me" the man begged, mere inches from actually grabbing his hands. "I know they're still alive down there, but I don't know how much longer..."

Ash could, of course, just exorcise this spirit. He knew the way to cut the ties that held a spirit to mortality, to return it to whatever Terrasphere considered the 'afterlife'. But there was always something that felt... off about doing that. It was the spiritual equivalent of bodyslamming someone into the next world, and it didn't feel right.

...I'll do my best. But I can't make any promises.

He would have to send some messages, though. He definitely wasn't going to do this alone...

Another curse as she slipped on the rocks that made up what could barely be called roads, her desire to be here slipping further and further away. How she had been convinced to go to a mine of all places was beyond Nymoria. She hated everything underground - especially tight, enclosed spaces that could trap someone away forever without any oxygen, slowly leaving them to-Stop that. Thinking about it is doing no good. You're here now. Go take a look, and then...oh, hello.

She came to a complete stop as the mine entrance appeared before her, a man already standing at the entrance, apparently lost in thought. Or, well, there were two men, but only one caught Nymoria's attention. He had an almost regal look to him, like someone from wealth - an appearance that Nymoria had to admit did him a lot of good.

She straightened herself, plucking a few hairs back behind her raccoon ears before stepping forwards. A soft cough, in an attempt to draw attention towards herself as she came closer, and she plastered a smile on her face that likely looked far from welcoming.

Hi...this wouldn't happen to be the local mine, where people have gone missing would it? I've been...requested, sort of, to help out with it. You're not here for the same reason, are you? I mean it's cool if you are, but...you know, I got this.

She twirled the javelin in her left hand hand, leaning slightly to her right as she did so. A small glint in her eye, speaking to an almost playfulness would've hinted towards the fact that she was trying to jest the other individual, in an attempt to bait them in. Maybe this quest thing won't be so bad...

Ash twisted an ear backwards as the other woman approached. Quiet cursing... he wasn't being snuck up on. He turned, expression carefully neutral as he gave the newcomer a glance.

Heavy armor, spear. Fighter. If they're here, they're probably a player. He nodded as she approached and raised a hand in greeting.

Hi. You're in the right place-

The old man rushed forward before he could say any more, grasping for the woman's clothes with deathly cold hands and a wild expression. "You! You have to help me! My friends, they were in the mine when it collapsed!" It was the same greeting the spirit had given Ash, word for word. He stepped forward and put a hand on the old ghost's shoulder with a polite smile, tugging him away before he could cause too many problems.

We understand. Will you lead the way?

The man stared up at him for a moment, and then lurched towards the mine's entrance and beckoning energetically. "This way, this way! We have to hurry, I can no longer hear their voices..."

Ash sighed before turning to the newcomer with a helpless shrug.

Ghosts... anyway. I'm Ash. Did the villagers tell you what we were getting into?

Nymoria stumbled back a step as the man came at her, something about his appearance seeming off to her, almost like he wasn't natural. Her ears twitched as she tried to figure out what was going on, listening as the other individual stepped forward and pulled the man away like it was nothing.

Oh...uh...Nymoria...did you say ghosts? Like actual ghosts? The villagers never mentioned shit all about ghosts! What...what do we do about ghosts? Like, what if they're not friendly? Do we just like...run and hope they can't catch us? Is there some sort of like, ghostbuster thing?

The javelin twirled in her hand, a nervous twitch as she stepped after the man - Ash. Her first instinct was to run, to get far away from the cave, as far away as she could. If he's going in though...I need to go in...

Have...have you ever done anything like this before? I mean, I guess the better question is what are we doing? I mean the villagers said something about the mine being dangerous, and needing 'clearing out', whatever that means...

She glanced around the closing in walls that surrounded them, feeling pressured as it became more and more enclosed. She felt herself tensing up, a shiver running down her back as she tried to force away the growing fear inside herself. Just don't...just don't think about it...it's fine...we're going to get out of here...it'll be fine...just need to...follow a ghost, and maybe meet more ghosts...and it's fine...

You could say I have some ghost experience, yeah...

Ash took a moment to pull a lamp and match from his inventory before they went in. The light the metal lantern cast wasn't particularly bright, but it was certainly better than walking around in darkness. It reflected off abandoned tools and cast strange shadows across the rough walls of the abandoned mineshaft.

I surprised they didn't tell you more. Apparently there was a collapse here a few weeks back. Since then, there's been stories of someone asking for help... and the people who try to actually help not coming back.

The air of the shaft was stale, warm, and unpleasantly damp - like walking into the mouth of some sleeping beast. Their footsteps echoed briefly before being swallowed up into the silence. Notably, the man they were following seemed to make no noise at all beyond his fervent muttering.

"Just a little further, just a little further... hold on! Help is on its way!"

He kept moving, just outside the circle of light the lantern cast. He glanced down at Nymoria, a perfect picture of tension, and tilted his head.

You know, if this is too much for you, you can turn back. No judgement if you're claustro-

Shfff...

Without warning, the lantern went out, plunging the tunnel into darkness.

He'd begun to offer her an out, a way to escape this without any judgement or any second guessing. Then, the light went out - and with it, any consideration of escaping. The slight squeal that escaped her lips was entirely encompassing of her current expression of the situation.

Nine hells...nine hells...nine hells...we're going to get out...we'll be fine...

She whispered to herself, trying to steady her breathing and her heartbeat - both coming rapidly in response to the situation she found herself in now. At least I have cute boy here who seems capable...

I'm...good...or at least I will be...let's just keep going. Can we like...relight the candle-thingy? That might help a bit. Not sure about you, but my night vision is...

She paused as she realised that her vision actually wasn't that bad. She could see the outlines of things around them, barely visible, but there nonetheless. Enough that she could likely limp her way along, without running into anything. Maybe.

...huh, guess raccoon's actually have decent night vision...That's...helpful. Oh! Can you see at all? You can rest up against me if you need to, I don't mind.

Her voice carried an odd tone to it, a slight hint of purring that seemed to lie underneath the words themselves. A slight cough followed, as she tried to cover it up, somewhat surprised by the sound herself. Alright...note to self, not everything can be consciously controlled. That's...realistic...

Ash raised a hand in front of his face, turning his head from side to side in an attempt to see it. The difference between black and grey were so vague that he couldn't be sure if he was just imagining it. Only the silhouette of the spirit ahead was discernible to him through the senses afforded by his magic. That was new.

Just barely. I can see the ghost just fine, but I'm not trusting him to lead us true. Hold on, I should have some more matches...

It took a little shuffling to get out a match without putting down the lantern, ignoring Nymoira's offer to provide a physical guide. He struck the match, which flickered feebly in the darkness as he dropped it in the lantern. It's light barely lit the space around them, let alone the path ahead.

There's plenty of oil... something's weird here.

The man's desperate cries grew distorted as he walked further into the tunnel. Something was wrong, and it set Ash's nerves on end. People had disappeared following this ghost, after all - but it didn't seem to be violent. Just the desperate echo of a foolish man.

Ash drew his sword.

How experienced are you with that spear? There might be a fight ahead.

The smile that spread across Nymoria's face was wicked in nature, an excitement at the mention of conflict that would be concerning to most who could see it - if they could see it, at all. In the darkness, she realised that it likely wouldn't be much of an answer, considering how little they could see.

Capable...I can handle myself in a fight. So long as I can actually hit whatever it is we're facing.

She gave the javelin a half-twirl in her hand, righting the balance on it before making sure that the daggers on her left thigh, and right arm were secured in place. A final check of her gauntlet confirmed her final weapons were ready, should she need them.

And it's not a spear...it's a javelin. Shorter length, more centralised balance. Provides better handling in tighter spaces, and easier to toss if required-

She stopped talking as she noticed the man seemed to not be listening to her, a fact that agitated her more than she would've liked. The growl that escaped her lips in turn caused her a moment of surprise, and another reminder that in this world, she was more beastlike than human in some aspects. Really need to learn to control those...ohgods can you read emotions from like the ears and tails?!

As Nymoria considered the ability to read emotions from beastfolk features, it was all too obvious how Ash was feeling as his ears lay flat. He was distracted, not to be cruel, but because something was here, something that had him on edge...

Javelin, sorry. Hard for me to tell one pointed stick from the other...

-zzzt-

Ash blinked. Something was off with his vision. His UI was... flickering, like static on a television. A raw sense of familiarity writhed in his stomach as his heart beat a dissonant staccato.

"Help, help...!"

In the distance the man stood - or dangled, now. Behind him, mismatched red eyes opened in the darkness, one by one. Something scraped forward, dragging itself towards them with stumpy limbs. A great fanged maw parted, letting out a breath that seemed to sap the energy from them both.

Ash stepped back, tail between his legs as he held the sword with a shaking hand. It felt heavy and awkward without autoassist to guide his actions, and the pain of his nails pressing into his palms was sharp and real.

That's... that's Dissonance.

Fuck.

He almost sounded apologetic, so much so that Nymoria found herself feeling bad for correcting the man. Here he was, just making sure that she was okay, and that she could handle herself, and she'd gone and been...well, that. She had just opened her mouth to try and make things right, when the mine suddenly illuminated slightly.

Her entire body turned to face the new thing, her eyes taking in what looked like a giant fish of some sort, with legs. She felt her mouth drop open slightly, and the tail on her back droop ever so slightly as she tried to figure out what she was staring at.

What in the fuck is that...

The more she stared at the thing, the more she wanted to stab it. It looked dangerous, the teeth, the light that hung from its head like some sort of beacon to draw things in...everything about it looked like something that should be stabbed. Repeatedly.

She moved almost instinctively, pulling the javelin up in her left hand and stabbing forward with it, putting as much effort into it as she could. The tip slammed into the jaw of the creature, causing a small tear in the lip as the tip of the javelin slashed, and then retreated.

Ha! You're not so tough, now are you, you stupid giant land fish with legs...ugly, but not tough! Let's do this!

Where Ash retreated, Nymoria attacked. The Angler made no noise, but the voice of the man dangling from its lure grew loud and distorted as it waved it back and forth. A strange light emanated from the man as it continued dragging itself forward and whipped it towards him.

"H-help..." The man latched onto him, digging ragged nails into his skin before the angler dragged them both towards him. Ash growled before swinging his sword crudely towards the stalk of the lure. The Angler thrashed, causing the tunnel to groan as stone shifted somewhere above.

Ash pulled back, gasping with pain. He relied hard on the game's auto-features. He'd forgotten in the passing years that there was something out there that could strip that safety net from him. It was fortunate that a sword was, ultimately, a pretty simple weapon.

You doing alright there?

It was hard to keep the fear out of his voice. The smell was getting to him, that familiar sea-salt smell from back then...

Nymroia's growl had transitioned into something that reminded her of a feral animal - not quite an angry sound, but something that bespoke the enjoyment of the back and forth fighting that she was currently locked in. She found the constant flow of battle, the way that she would duck around the other man in order to stab at the creature, before sliding off to the side to present him with an opening - or dodge out of the way of a retaliatory slap from the thing - to be the most thrilling thing to happen today.

Am I okay? I'm having the time of my life here! Come on, let's finish this bastard!

She giggled as she rushed forward, giving care to the wind as she leapt to strike the thing from above. As she sailed through the air, her eyes were drawn to the hanging light on its head, her battle lust subdued for a moment as she felt drawn towards it, before she remembered that she was falling.

Almost instinctively she thrust out the javelin in her hand, managing to catch the thing before she fell past it, scrapping the blade along its side in a weak attempt to slow herself before hitting the ground and rolling out of the way.

Wow...okay don't look at the pretty light...there's something weird about that thing...wow...

She shook her head, before teetering to her feet, feeling a bit off somehow - only to feel something slam into her, pushing her backwards into the wall, before letting her slide to her butt on the ground. A soft groan escaping her lips as she felt something snap, although she wasn't sure what.

At least someone's having fun...

Ash backed off, still biting back the urge to whimper with pain. His coat had born the brunt of the dead man's clawing, but that did nothing for blunt force trauma and the pounding pain that came with it. He wasn't in the worst shape, at least going by pure numbers - but without the pain limiter, it felt that much worse.

"Finish it off - right." He took a deep breath, trying to push the pain away. The Angler's lure blinked distractedly - was that the light of a soul, or just a trick of Dissonance? Either way, he couldn't help but track its motion, almost forgetting the threat in front of him.

He squeezed his eyes shut against the light and charged forward, lunging blindly towards the Angler. He felt the impact of his sword and felt the stinging spray of acid as his blade sunk deep into the monster's head.

The Angler screeched, it's lure flickering wildly as it thrashed, stubby limbs pounding and clawing at the walls and ripping out support beams and hunks of earth. The subtle groan of stone became a crackling cacophony as the tunnel began to strain.

Shit... let's get out of here!

He pulled his sword out of the Angler, covering his head as stone began to shower from above. He sheathed it roughly, and then just as roughly reached for Nymoria's arm to pull her along with him. She'd shown signs of claustrophobia - the last thing he wanted was for her to freeze up as the tunnel collapsed around them!

Run. The single word in her mind, as the cave began collapsing around them. She didn't even have time to enjoy the fact that they had taken down the...well, whatever the hell that was. Their entire world was collapsing around them, and if there was one thing that Nymoria was sure of - she wasn't going to be buried alive if she could help it.

The initial pull from Ash turned into a mad dash as she quickly gained speed, propelled by the claustrophobia as much as by the adrenaline in her body. Reaching back, she grabbed the man's hand, tugging him behind her in their race to escape the underground death trap.

She sucked in fresh air the moment they exploded from the entrance, realising how much she loved the open air. It took a few steps to slow, before eventually coming to a stop a good number of metres away from the cave itself. She turned to look back at the once-mine, a devilish grin on her face.

Holy...shit. I don't know what the fuck that thing was, but damn nice job killing it! Although not bringing the whole tunnel down on top of us would've been nice too. Damn! What a thrill!

She hopped on the balls of her feet a bit, the excitement seeming to reverberate from within her core. She glanced over at Ash again, trying to read the other player as she slowly forced herself to calm. He seemed...off, somehow.

Hey...you all good there? You look a little...I don't know, shaken? Something got you bothered? I mean we just avoided death, and killed a...thing...you should be celebrating!

The smell of fresh air was a relief, but not as much a relief as watching as his UI stabilized. With it came the return of the pain limiter, numbing the throbbing pain of battle into tingling numbness and system-enforced stiffness.

For the first time, that almost annoyed him.

Ash shook his head, pushing the thought aside. "Sorry, it's just... been a while since I've fought Dissonance. Not particularly fond of it." He gave Nymoria a shaky smile. "You're right, though - any fight you survive is something to celebrate."

He still had to put a hand to his chest, though, feeling the dissonant beat settle. There was nothing there, he told himself. "The first time I died was to a boss fight version of those. Mass of eyes and tentacles as big as an airplane hanger. Absolute nightmare of a fight."

He shook off the memories of sea-salt and acid, and turned towards the mine entrance. It would take a geomancer or a whole team of diggers to get into there now. The man, his friends, the Dissonant creatures within - they were all sealed away now, along with any answers as to what happened. He had a pretty good idea after that fight, though.

"We should get back, let the village know what happened. If there's Dissonance this close, they'll need to prepare." He looked himself over, then Nymoria. "You up for the hike back? Or do you need a moment to rest? You took a beating back there."

A search for wealth - a common outcome for such greed. Though not one met by our two travelers, rather, a precursor to their events here. When a Spirit wails and cries, it can be difficult to answer the call, especially for someone like Ash Vargold. A curious trait, one that might get taken advantage of in the future. Not here, no. Instead, our adventurers learned that the shadow of Titanius still looms over this length of Astorea, his presence felt even years after his death. Altering the very landscape, and the enemies held within.

As well as the minds and spirits of those who have gotten too close. Is it madness, or simple influence by spirits, and the dreams of those who have died here?

Loved the twist that the man was already dead, and was a sort of tormented spirit. Bravo.
