There were no carriages going to Hovelis. The trio had learned that travelling from Astorea here. It was just too small a village, to justify the cost of a wagon, unless they were carrying supplies. There were, however, carriages going to and from nearby Honeyhome all the time. The more established town there was frequented by Landers and Travelers alike, especially new players, who often stumbled across the town after touching down out in the forests of Eastern Brisshal.

Thus, Yugam, Unmei, and Luthien were all left to travel on foot from Hovelis to Honeyhome, where they would catch a ride back to Finweald and the Explorer's League. And Beleg would most likely have another package delivery disguised as an expedition waiting for them. Oh, what a wonderful life...

At least for now that meant they were getting further and further away from Fiora. Yu already had to deal with her constantly in real life, he'd hoped to minimize contact in-game, but alas, things rarely turned out the way he wanted them to. "Sorry about Fiora," the man said as they walked along, Hovelis slowly disappearing into the distance. "She can be a bit much, I know."

Uncomfortable as the wagons could be if given the choice Lúthien would’ve certainly preferred them to walking, unless she was getting to explore a new trail. Unfortunately the shortest path between Honeyhome and Hovelis was the same they’d traversed before, so usually she would’ve dreaded doing this walk back and no doubt would’ve given Beleg an earful about it on her return… that’s if Yugam hadn’t been around.

Suddenly she didn’t mind walking back the same path she’d already explored and discovered but a day before, happy to spend the time with the hunter as they walked instead. A light chuckle had been the elf’s response when Yugam apologized for Fiora’s behavior, the blonde softly shaking her head from side to side in return.

"It’s alright, if anything it was quite the interesting evening." Unconsciously she’d stepped closer to the man as she spoke, their shoulders brushing against one another. "She’s quite the character, huh?"

Lúthien had certainly enjoyed watching the pair interact with one another, and while she couldn’t speak from experience the elf assumed their antics were not too different from how siblings would often banter with one another in a family.

She shook off his apology and brushed against his shoulder as she spoke. Thankfully, Fiora had somehow not made herself out to be a complete asshole, at least not towards Luthien. Actually, the way Fiora had acted reminded him of how Nico had treated Nao as well. Which was probably a good sign. Or a very, very bad one, meaning that Nico would be even more interested in their relationship.

'Note to self, buy a deadbolt for my bedroom door.'

"A character, yeah," Unmei scowled as she leaned forward to look at Luthien. "Did he ever tell you what she did the first time they met?" the sword-spirit asked as they walked along, earning herself a groan from her master.
"N-no?"
"Unmei, please-"
"That bitch fucking decked him!"

There was a strange delight in Unmei's eyes as she recounted this story, as if even the memory of his physical pain brought her joy. "He was in a party looking for uhhhhh-"
"A sheep."
"Yeah, a sheep! And they found the sheep, but it was this weird nightmare monster or something, but anyways, they nearly got their asses kicked by it-"
"We one shot it."
"Uh huh, yeah, sure ya did honey. They got their asses kicked, almost, and wound up finding her passed out in a cave. First thing she does when she wakes up? WHAM! Right on the nose."
"I hate you."

The elf was surprised when Unmei suddenly spoke up, the scowl on the woman’s face evident even as she leaned forward to look at the ranger directly in the eyes. SHe was taken aback by the tone in the sword-spirit’s voice, her own answer a very short and stuttered word even as Lúthien’s eyes turned to look questioningly at the hunter. He groaned, attempting to interject and stop the dark-haired woman, before the words tumbled right out of the sword-spirit’s mouth.

"That bitch fucking decked him!"
"W-Wait… Fiora decked you?"

A confused frown settled on her elven features as Lúthien slowly assimilated the new piece of information, the odd delight in the other woman’s eyes not entirely missed—though at the moment the blonde decided to not explore it further. "... you mean the one with the creepy doll that stole your face? That nightmarish sheep?" She listened as Unmei regaled most of the story with surprising detail, the occasional quip given by the man here and there, though in a way Lúthien supposed that shouldn’t be odd.

"So you found her in a random cave passed out…" Her head tilted sideways, trying to make heads and tails of the new information provided by this unexpected tale—and completely forgetting to keep an eye on their surroundings in the process as they traveled. "... maybe she was disoriented?"

The gentle swaying of the brush and the golden leaves of autumn accompanied the pair - or rather, the trio - along this lonely, quaint path. Dirt and rocks crunching with each step of the feet of @Luthien and @Yugam where Unmei's own steps made no such call to her presence. A mile, then another. Enclosed by the trees, as their wide, brown trunks and small critter residents got more sparse. Starting out as an additional foot between the intertwining roots, to further and further out. These towering structures of nature becoming more hermetic the further along the two went. This thin road twisting and turning throughout the surrounding forest, leading them deeper.

There was more than just the hooting of owls, and chattering of squirrels, lurking beneath the foliage, however. There was a stiff rustle, and then leaves and shrub branches snapping as a figure stepped into view, blocking their path. A massive man, shirtless and scarred, with a belt holding up a pair of brown pants. That and his loose, illfitting shoes were all that protected him from the cold breeze of the mid-Fall air. "Ey, that's about far enough." He more uttered than spoke, his accent a gutteral reconstruction of rural-Welsh from your world.

To accentuate the point, his arms raised, drawing attention to the dirt and dust covered, though still menacingly large warhammer in his hand. Black at the end, with a perforated set of points opposing a more flat, round end. The marks on the metal, visible by Luthien's hypersense would speak of a previous battle. There was a rustle to a set of shrubs to that man's right - left from the point of view of those journeying up the road, followed by a similar shake of the bushes that this man had just come from. Producing another man, smaller, his back arched in pain. Middle aged, his tanned, wrinkled face expressing every emotion and thought that went through his mind unconsciously. "Yuh, they're Travelers! Get them, Horis."

The one referred to as Horis pushed an open palm out, confidently grinning. "Your heard him. Travelers got a toll to pass this road. You're outnumbahed. Your money, or your life."

A classic tale of highway-banditry, sticking up those who come by for their money. Those who were desperate, those who saw a way to make easy money. Pushed here by external factors, pushed to thievery and robbery. What would a hero do in this situation?
  • [*] Yugam and Luthien are both inflicted by AMBUSHED - a Debuff Status effect that catches them by surprise, giving the first attacks made against them increased crit chance - 25%.

AMBUSH

Your party has been ambushed by a group of bandits, oh no! It can be as easy as giving them the Vesuvyan Gold that you have on hand, and walking away without a scuffle. If you truly trusted they'd just let you go after that. Or, you can pull at the power inside of you, the Fantasy hidden inside every character, and fight them off! The choice is yours. You two had specifically requested this spice to test out the FANTASY LIMIT system, complete with your self designed action load out. Below, is a battle map. For the purposes of Fantasy Limit, movement is doubled (for now). Use that movement to move around the battle map, and use your kits and positioning to handle this situation as you best determine.

You two know most of the rules for FL. Attacks have ranges, most can only be made Adjacent. Below, the bushes count as difficult terrain, and take 2x the movement to move through, or a creative action to do so. Be sure to record your Energy, along with your Health.

Any further questions can be asked to me directly on the discord.

"W-Wait… Fiora decked you?"
"Yyyyup," Yu responded dryly. "Walked up to her, and bam, sucker punch, right in the nose." The man rubbed his neck where his collar had choked him as Toko had tried to pull him out of the way. All in all, not a fun experience.

"Ey, that's about far enough," an unfamiliar voice said with an almost indecipherable accent.

Yu's attention was drawn up ahead on the road where two brigands were standing boldly in the middle of the road. Yu looked over at Luth with an eyebrow raised, as if to ask who these two jokers were.

"Yuh, they're Travelers! Get them, Horis," the second said to the first.
"Your heard him. Travelers got a toll to pass this road. You're outnumbahed. Your money, or your life."

"Uh huh..."

The sound of a drop of blood splashing onto the ground somehow cut through the air before the sound of shattering glass broke the silence, red spikes erupting from the ground beneath the first bandit's feet.

"You guys wanna rethink that?"

Her lips formed an ‘o’ shape of surprise as the man recounted the moment he’d been sucker punched in the face by Fiora, though the elf was unaware of the true reason that his hand had reached up to rub his neck lightly as his mind briefly relived the memory. "Wait, but if she seemed to hate you enough to punch you on sight how did you end up being roommates—" However her words would be interrupted as two figures further down the dirt road vied for their attention, causing the elf to frown in response as her eyes glared towards the man holding the hammer and the companion off to his side.

"Excuse you, did no one teach you that it’s impolite to interrupt someone else’s conversation for nonsense?"

She wasn’t the only one seemingly annoyed by their presence as the two figures proceeded to try and threaten them, the sound of dripping blood instantly causing Lúthien to step to the side just as the hunter beside her moved forwards. "You guys wanna rethink that?" His warning was followed by the sound of shattering crystals just as crimson red spikes erupted from the soil beneath the leader’s feet, giving the archer enough time to fetch her violin from the UI inventory as the spotlight was currently on Yugam.

The instrument was quietly infused with magic before the elf picked the bow stored on her quiver, allowing the hairs to gently caress the strings of the instrument as an enchanted melody was sprung forth. The invigorating tune continued to play even after the ranger had placed the bow away, snapping the violin into its combat configuration before nocking an arrow into the bowstring. By the time the man holding a blade had finally noticed the ranger had already taken aim, releasing the arrow before watching it strike the man right in the neck.

A gurgling cry was silenced when a lightning discharge pulsed from the arrow in question, the scent of burnt blood and flesh soon filling the air where they stood before the body slumped onto the ground—unmoving. ”Bastards, you killed Kendrick!” The agonized cry came from the bushes to their left just as another figure popped into view, the man unleashing an arrow in Yugam’s direction while Horis also gave a battle cry of his own. The stockier man ignored the pain as the blood spikes pierced through his worn boots, swinging his hammer widely before trying to bring it down on the man.

A soft melody from Luthien's violin was followed by the sharp twang of her bow, and the thud of a body as the man behind the hammer-wielding ape hit the floor, convulsing as electricity surged through his body, only stopping until after his flesh was smoldering and charred.

"Bastards, you killed Kendrick!"

"You'll join 'im if you don't - oof!"
Yu's words were cut short as an arrow struck his shoulder, the shaft sprouting from his coat, as the hammer dude swung at the Hunter's head. A blur of red as Unmei swept in front of Yu, she kicked away the hammer as she drew one of Yu's revolver's from it's holster, turned, and pulled the trigger right next to the bushjumper's ear.

The man let out an agonized cry of pain as he suddenly found his left ear ringing loud enough that he couldn't hear the heavy thud of a crimson shield slam the ground, or the second shot go off as Unmei took cover behind Yu's barrier and took a potshot at the Archer.

"Luth!" Yugam called to his companion. "Fuck 'em up!"

There was a moment of hesitation as the blonde had watched her arrow zap the last of the man’s life away, the realism of it all catching the archer off-guard before the cry of the hidden archer in the bushes caught Lúthien’s attention. He fired an arrow towards Yugam, catching the man unaware as the tip embedded itself into the man’s coat, and providing the trigger the ranger needed to snap out of her momentary stupor.

"H-Hey, just fuck outta here already!"

She’d moved towards the hunter’s left to line a proper shot while he’d been busy avoiding Unmei’s fire, a new arrow already nocked into her bowstring even as the weapon continued to play out the invigorating tune. The tip found its mark on the man’s own shoulder, a shock of electricity pulsating out of the arrow seconds after it struck and earning a loud yelp from the bushjumper. Yeow! Bitch, when did yah—I ain’t going down like Kendrick tahday!” The recognizable twang of a bowstring being released caught her elven ears, the ranger’s feet shuffling the dead leaves and twigs underneath her boots as she tried to dodge out of the way of an arrow she couldn’t see due to the cover of the bushes.

”Sure you got time to worry about that pretty lil’ blonde—whoa! What in Urukhan’s name is that?!”

Even with his left ear ringing the man found it within himself to throw a verbal jab towards the man as he swung his hammer once more, only to be surprised by the sudden sight of the crimson cover that suddenly stood between them. Even in its solid state it wasn’t hard to recognize the substance it was made of, the unnaturalness of it all managing to trip Horis enough that the bushjumper’s swing went wider than intended before striking the blood shield.

The thud of metal striking Yu's shield sent reverberations up the man's arm as he reached up to his shoulder and snapped the arrow shaft off, hissing in pain as the two bandits shouted whatever the hell it was they were saying. Yu didn't care. Couple of low level goons, the quicker that he and Luth carved their way through them, the better.

The shuffling of leaves drew the man's eyes towards Luth as she rolled out of the way of an arrow, kicking up the fallen leaves where she'd just been standing moments earlier. "Hey!" Yu suddenly shoved his shield forward, slamming it into the hammer-wielder before rising and grabbing the man's throat tightly. "Eyes on me assholes."

Violet vapor seeped between Yu's fingers, slowly absorbing the man's life essence. In Luthien's UI she could see the man's HP bar begin to tick up before Yu tossed the man to the ground. A wide-eyed stare as the hammerman scrambled back to his feet. "What the hell are you people?"

"Fuck!"

The tip of the arrow had managed to whizz by her left side, cutting the exposed skin just below her shoulder and earning a pained expletive from the blonde in response. Hah, gotcha you little—!” Whatever words the archer had been about to utter next were lost to the wind as Lúthien had fired another arrow just when the man’s head had come to sight, nailing the presumably bandit right in his mouth before the figure slumped backwards and onto the ground.

”Reeves?!” Surprise collared Horis’ voice as the man turned away from his opponent to spot the upper half of his companion’s body peeking out from the bushes, blood slowly pooling around the man’s head and staining the fallen leaves around the floor before eventually seeping into the soil. ”Oh ho ho hooo… you’re gonna pay for that, missy.”

His gaze quickly zeroed in on the blonde elf that had managed to kill two of his men, inwardly lamenting that he’d thought of her as a lesser threat until now. The burly man ignored the pain as his boots traversed the bloody spikes that the hunter had exploded around him, having already made peace with the fact that he was undoubtedly next to follow his comrades soon—determined to take one of these damned players with him before his time came.

Elven ears picked up the sound of approaching footsteps, quickly discerning that they were not the familiar one of Yugam’s, before the girl turned to see the fierce look of Horis as he closed the distance between them. Her bow was quickly raised with haste in a vain attempt to shield herself, before one of the man’s hands grasped the weapon and yanked it right out of Lúthien’s hands—discarding it towards the side—and quickly swinging his hammer before bringing it down on the girl. The sickening crunch it produced as it struck Lúthien’s left shoulder was quickly muffled out by the loud scream of pain that escaped the girl.

The sound of a gun's hammer being cocked back halted whatever the highwayman had been planning on doing next as he froze in place, a cold chill of fear crawling up his spine. Or was that death? It didn't matter either way, his time was up, and he hadn't even managed to take one of the Starcalled with him. What a shame.

There was no ceremony or flair as Yugam finished off the last of the bandits. Just a squeeze of the trigger, the hammer slamming down on the firing cap, the gun kicked in his hand as the blood-formed bullet zipped out of the barrel and buried itself in the base of the man's skull. The body fell to the side, thudding as it struck the ground. And that was that.

"Are you ok?" Yugam asked the elf as Unmei brought over her bow. "That sounded like it hurt," she said as she held the weapon out to the elf.

The force of the blow had caused the elf to stagger backwards before her rump landed on the ground, her right hand lifting to quickly press against the quickly bruising skin to try and minimize the pain that was currently flooding her senses. The bandit had towered over her, his shadow easily encompassing the smaller elf, but before he could properly grasp his hammer for another swing the clear sound of a gun being cocked cut through the air.

Yugam’s bullet found little resistance as it extinguished the life of Horis, the hulking mass of muscles sinking to its knees before flopping onto the side with a heavy thud just as a relieved sigh escaped the archer. His voice called out to her, and Lúthien quickly shifted her gaze away from the now glazed over eyes of the bandit to look at the hunter and the sword spirit.

"Are you ok?"
"Y-Yeah…!"
"That sounded like it hurt."
"Just a little—oww!"

A faint smile had been offered to Yugam even as the blonde’s voice cracked just slightly, not wishing to worry the man or Unmei, but what little façade Lúthien had barely managed to build had quickly crumbled as the elf had reached for her bow with her left hand. The movement had quickly caused a jolt of pain to travel from her shoulder, immediately withdrawing her hand back in response as a pained wince crossed her elven features.

Yu had knelt down so that he was at eye level with Luthien as Unmei had gone to retrieve her bow. If he had to guess by the vicious cracking sound from before, that hammer blow had, at the very least, fractured something. As Unmei had gone to hand the bow back to Luthien, Yu had stowed his revolver back in it's holster before Luthien winced in pain.

"Let's make camp and I'll patch you up," the Hunter suggested. With Luthien's agreement, the man took a brief look around, first at the three bodies they'd left along the road, then at the two large tents pitched off to the side. "C'mon, let's settle down there."

Yugam offered the elf a hand, hoisting her up by her non-injured side, and walking alongside her towards the tents, keeping a careful eye on her until he bade her sit down on a log, and he knelt down in front of her. "Alright, so, I admit, my brand of healing. Not as pleasant as yours. It's gonna hurt," the man warned her. "You ready for this?"

His suggestion found no argument from the girl, though she couldn’t help the faint sigh that had escaped her lips. While they had planned to stop and rest at some point, the trip back to Honeyhome on foot taking longer than the daylight they’d have available, it wasn’t supposed to be until at least an hour or two later. "Sorry, I kinda forgot to keep my eyes on the big guy." The corner of her lips were pulled into an apologetic smile as she spoke, finally receiving her bow from Unmei with her right hand before soft motions in the air caused it to disappear into her UI inventory for the time being.

Yugam pointed out the pitched tents not too far from their skirmish area, no doubt belonging to the three men they had properly dealt with, and the girl nodded in agreement as the man helped hoist her back onto her feet. The distance wasn’t long, but each step the elf took caused her left shoulder to throb and cause the occasional wince or sharp inhale of breath in response. "Fucking hammer…" Given the weapon and the impact Lúthien couldn’t say she was surprised that it hurt like a bitch… but damn, the devs of this game had really gone all out on everything.

"Your healing hurts…?" She couldn’t help the puzzled look on her face as the elf sat down on the log, her confusion filtering into her voice before she nodded—though it lacked the usual confidence of the ranger. "I g-guess?"

"Don't worry about it, it happens," the man had replied, more focused on making sure that Luthien was okay as opposed to reminding her to be more careful.

With Luthien confirming she was ready, the man placed a hand on her shoulder, gentle enough so as to not hurt her anymore than he was about to. Violet energy enveloped his hand as he closed his eyes and began his work. Beneath Luthien's flesh, bone mended itself, ligaments drawing back together causing a dull aching sensation as the fractured bones came back together. Though it was not nearly as painful as if Yugam had had to set the bone, it was not doubt unpleasant for Luthien to experience months of natural healing within a few moments.

It lasted no more than a few seconds, and when it was over, and the pain subsided, Luthien would've found her shoulder to be as good as new. "There, all done," the man said as he stood and dusted his pant legs free of dirt.

He’d been careful when placing his hand upon her bruised shoulder, the elf gritting her teeth in light preparation given the warning that Yugam had given her. A violet glow formed underneath his palm as the man casted his magic, his eyes closing as Yugam focused on mending the fractured bones and torn ligaments under her skin. A short hiss of discomfort had escaped Lúthien then, though compared to the pain she’d felt when the hammer had first struck her the ranger supposed this wasn’t as terrible as she’d expected.

"O-Oh…! Okay, that wasn’t as bad as I thought it would be."

Surprise colored her words once the hunter had announced he was done patching up her injury, the remaining soreness that had lingered on her shoulder dissipating shortly after. A testing shrug was given and, when that didn’t produce any pain, it was followed by a few rolls of her shoulder. "Feels good as new, thanks Yu~" She looked up at the man, a bright smile accompanying her words, before her eyes finally turned to look around the small camp area that had presumably belonged to their attackers.

"Well, at least they won’t be bothering others anymore…"

Honestly though, had they been possessed by a death wish or something? Why would Landers willingly choose to try and fight players of all things?

"Eh, you're lucky it wasn't worse," Yu said as he also dusted his hands off. "The more damage there is, the more it hurts. I'm just accelerating the healing." The man looked back at the corpses on the road as Luthien began to test out her shoulder again. "Don't mention it," the man replied without looking back at the elf.

"Well, at least they won't be bothering others anymore…"
"Yeah,"
the man nodded. "We should probably do something about them."

The man looked at Unmei, "Wanna help me search them for loot? We can toss 'em in some shallow graves so they don't stink up the place."
Unmei's nose scrunched up in distaste. "Yeah, I guess," she assented anyways, though she didn't like the idea of handling a bunch of corpses.

The man looked at Luthien, "Wanna check the tents out and see if there's anything good in there? If we get lucky, we'll get some decent loot and a shovel." Maybe they could make some decent coin off the loot, and be spared digging their final resting places by hand.

"I s-see," Quietly the elf made a mental note to try and avoid any terrible injuries—she wasn’t exactly keen on figuring out just how painful Yugam’s animancy could become when healing grievous wounds. She stood up just as the hunter turned towards Unmei, requesting the woman’s assistance with the three bodies now lying on the road, the elf dusting her shorts as her eyes slowly trailed over the camp.

"Mmm?" Her attention shifted back to the man as he spoke again, before the blonde nodded softly. "Oh yeah, I’ll check the tents and see what’s around."

To her surprise the search was rather short, the tents mostly bare inside except for a few small things. Only a handful of coins had been present, though shortly after exiting the second tent the ranger had been delighted to find a shovel off to the side. "Bingo~" The tool was picked up before the archer inspected it, frowning upon noticing the poor state of it, but at least it still looked sturdy enough to dig a couple of holes with it… maybe.

"Slim pickings with these guys," Her voice called out to the duo as Lúthien walked over towards them, hoisting the cheap looking shovel up lightly when Yugam looked over to show the man she’d found one. "Between the two tents I found a grand total of five gold pieces."

Yugam and Unmei dragged the three very, very dead cropses of the goons from the side of the road and laid dropped each rather unceremoniously on the ground while Luthien searched the tents for anything of value. And the prized shovel the three so desperately needed.

"Slim pickings with these guys," Luthien's voice called as Yu began to pick through the highwaymen's pockets. "Between the two tents I found a grand total of five gold pieces."
"Oh, we're rich!"
the man replied sarcastically turning out every pocket he could find. Nothing of value dropped out though. Not even their weapons could be sold for very much money, barely keeping together as they were. The man sighed as he looked over at Luthien and the coins she was holding. "Yeah, got nothing here too," the man said as he stood up. "Man, these guys weren't very good at their jobs, huh? Find a shovel?" After Luthien confirmed as much, the man gestured for her to hand it over. "I'll dig, don't worry about it," he said.
