Black Lingam. The name, Nymoria felt, was an apt description of the small village that she had made her way towards. There wasn't much to it, and what little there was, well, seemed uninteresting to say the least. Still, she had been told that something here had been prowling about, harassing locals. Supposedly, a reward had been put out for anyone who was willing to assist with the problem - something that Nymoria had jumped on. After the fact, she had been told that the reward was measly, which explained why no one else had taken it - but she was new, and anything was good to her.

Now just to figure out where this Aelia is...and get this whole thing started...

She'd spent the better part of fifteen minutes asking around, before someone had been kind enough to point her in the general direction. Once she had found the woman, all she'd been told was that some sort of giant bird-like-creature had been harassing any explorers that had left the camp, and tearing into the few caravans that had managed to make their way to the village recently.

Bird-like-thing. Great descriptor. At least it's not like...a giant rock golem or something. That would be annoying. Bird, I can handle. I think. So long as it lands...

She'd been told to wait by the gates, informed that someone else might be joining her. Not that she had felt like she needed the help, but...But it never hurts to have some back-up, just in case...remember the wolf. She shivered in response to that thought - something that she'd prefer not to encounter again, until she was more prepared. Still, it irked her slightly that she had to rely on other people.

Finally. Finally the AG had given her a real job. This wasn't grunt work but an actual hunt of some kind. With luck, it would be something big and nasty. Imoogi had some new poisons she was eager to try...

But of course, it wouldn't be an AG quest if it didn't involve being assigned a teammate of some kind. They could go on and on about how it was 'for her own safety' and all, but it still felt like they were treating her like a baby and forcing her to split the pay...

Ugh. Hopefully it'd at least be someone who knew what they were doing.

It didn't take long for her to spot the adventurer by the gate, with her fancy armor and flashy weapons. She hadn't noticed her yet, and with a bit of shadow magic to muffle her steps she made an effort to keep it that way until she was behind her. She grinned, fangs showing, as she raised a hand.

"Yo. You from the AG?"

Nymoria's head snapped around as she raised her javelin in response to the shock of someone sneaking up behind her, pulling it backwards in a ready stance that bespoke violent intention.

As her eyes fell upon the individual, grin and all, Nymoria felt herself settle slightly. Lowering the javelin, she gave the woman a confused look, her head tilting slightly to the right as her brows furrowed inwards slightly.

The...AG? No idea what that is. I was told to wait here for someone before we go hunting. Wouldn't happen to be you, that I'm waiting for, would it?

She eyed the woman up and down. Clearly dangerous, likely someone who knew what they were doing. That, and they didn't have the appearance of a local - the almost scholarly like swagger that most of them carried seemed to contrast the way this one moved and held themselves. Not to mention they snuck up on you...which, I mean is saying at least something.

If so...you're late. I've been waiting here a while now. If you're ready, we can get going.

She took a few steps forwards, turning to see what the other player would do. She knew it was brazen, but figured that if she presented the image of leadership, maybe the other would simply fall into step. Never hurts to try...

"The Adventurer's Guild? Don't tell me you're doing this kind of work for free." Not that it actually bothered Imoogi. If she wasn't in the guild, it just meant more money for her. "You should check them out, they pay way better than other NPCs. Anyway, I'd say you're early. I can't move faster than the horse."

Imoogi could tell the other person was trying to... what. Intimidate her? But Imoogi was taller than her, and it took some of the bite out of the attempt. Sure, the other player had better armor and fancy weapons, but that didn't mean anything in the long run. Still, it wasn't like she cared enough to try and fight her on it, so she just shrugged. "Sure, lets go."

She would let her lead the way for now. It meant she had more time to prepare her own weapons, like making sure all her darts were ready to go.

"So... big bird thing, huh? Can't be that tough. Not like we're fighting a bear or anything..."

Nymoria paused in her movements at the mention of more payment. She'd heard about the Adventurer's Guild before - a few people stating about how it was a group all about going out and getting paid for...well, doing this. She'd considered it - would've signed up immediately if she'd found somewhere to do so, but luck had not been on her side yet.

I'll have to look into them...the reward offered for the quest by the locals was...well, about what you'd expect. Not great, but I guess that's why no big player veterans have snagged it up either. Perfect for us newer, lesser folk.

She didn't bother excluding the other woman from her assessment. Even with the casually attitude, the carefree behaviour, none of it was working on Nymoria though. She knew that if either one of them were worth anything in this world, they wouldn't be hunting down a creature in the middle of nowhere for a few scraps of coin.

Yeah. A bird thing. I'm told it looks like a giant hawk. And uh...yeah, it's been terrorizing the area...

She shrugged, turning to look out the front of the village and towards the wilds beyond, before taking a couple steps forward.

Anything else here you need to do before we head out?

Imoogi's face twisted, but it was only a second before it settled back into neutrality. She really didn't need the reminder that she wasn't considered particularly special in this game. "Well, gotta start sssomewhere."

Still, there was a bit of a hiss to her words as she finished envenoming her darts. "I'm good. Got most of my prep done ahead of time." She let a couple of vials drop from her inventory into her hand - healing potions, buffing potions, a few paralytics. It was a bird, which mean flying.

"So, how good are you at flinging that spear? If it's a bird it's gonna be fucking obnoxious, I bet." She clasped her hands behind her head as she followed after @Nymoria. "I mean, I've got a plan, but it doesn't mean shit if you can't follow up, y'know?"

There was a little venom in those words as well. Another probing strike into the kind of person Nymoria was. The last thing she needed was her trying to think she was better than Imoogi was.

Nymoria glanced down at the javelin in her hand, giving it a soft spin before she considered answering. The piece was light, and she had more than enough experience using it.

Well...the javelin is designed to be thrown, so I doubt it'll be an issue. The biggest issue will be getting it back...but, the thing has to land eventually. Especially if it's hurt...or has a javelin sticking out of its chest. I'm not too worried.

She didn't bother mentioning the other weapons, or her tactics when it came to dealing with less than willing creatures. They were here to hunt the thing down, and Nymoria wouldn't have taken the job if she wasn't at least somewhat confident that she could at least be a danger to the thing.

Besides, once you hit it with whatever toxins you're playing with there...it probably won't want to fly away. I think we can handle this, no worries at all. So long as you hit it, that is...

She didn't change her tone at all, didn't add any condescending attitude to her comments. She had no doubts that the two of them were capable of dealing with this, even if the other woman wanted to be a bit snarky about their arrangements. Nymoria wasn't here to make friends, or help someone's ego. She was here to hunt, and she was going to do just that - hopefully with the help of the other player.

"Right. Sure." And she had toxins aplenty. Hopefully it wasn't something that resisted them. "I might even have a few you can toss onto your throwing spear.

Was Imoogi asking for it? Oh, definitely. Did she care? Not really. It was just a game. It didn't really matter how she acted, right? She could just go somewhere else, or log off.

Her investigation mode wasn't particularly enhanced by Beast Mastery, which was... frustrating. It seemed like something that would let her detect animals better, but no. It just let her tame them, which was... cool and all, but it was hard to tame an animal when you couldn't find it in the first place.

"So... what do you think? Any good at tracking, or do we just keep walking and look tasty?" She turned her attention skyward. It was a bird, which meant looking up was the important part, right? "Hopefully it's not gonna decide to shit on us from above or something..."

Nymoria side glanced at the woman, the tone discernibly less than welcoming. She wondered what she had done to get on the bad side of the other player - Maybe they just like playing the asshole? That's fine... - before deciding that the best thing to focus on was the giant death bird they were looking for. Not that she expected to simply come upon it by chance.

Guess the locals didn't like you as much...they told me where the nest is.

She couldn't help the smugness in her voice as she shared the piece of information. A local had spotted the nest, not far from the area itself. She'd been told it would be about an hour's walk, at most. And supposedly a good chance that we'll encounter it on the way out...She hadn't enjoyed that information anywhere near as much. Not that she was able to argue it, it simply was.

The first twenty minutes of their travels had been relatively quiet, but as Nymoria rounded the corner of their path, her eyes caught something in the distance. Looking upwards, she saw a flash of black against the soft clouds, diving directly towards them.

Goods news...I don't think we have to walk much further. Bad news, it found us.

She didn't like their current placement - a high cropping of rock, with a small path. Their two choices forwards and backwards, the cliff edge to their right, a high wall of rock to their left. Nothing but open air around them. Worst possible battleground against a bird...ah well. She raised her javelin, waiting for the thing to come closer, to see what it would do.

"Well, if I'd gone around asking people about the bird, I'd be late, y'know?"

Imoogi shrugged as she fell into step behind Nymoria. Let her be smug: it just meant that she had to put less effort into all this herself.

The walk was long, but at least it was quiet. Imoogi found herself fiddling with a dart, tossing it into the air and catching it. Practice, or at least that's what she told herself. There was no way she was nervous, not at all.

It was during a particularly high toss that she looked up and saw the bird descending. A grin spread across her face - now was her chance to actually fight something worth fighting! She caught her dart - neurotoxic, paralytic, hopefully enough to slow it down enough for another hit. She took aim and chucked the dart towards it.

To her credit, she did hit her mark. Unfortunately, it wasn't enough to pierce the raveness' feathers. It did, however, draw its attention towards her. Imoogi only had a second before it swooped into her, claws raking hard enough to rip into her robes and pick her up. She had a moment of being airborne before she was dropped onto the jagged stones.

Pain overwhelmed Imoogi's thoughts. What had just happened? Her head was throbbing, and she could hardly think straight.

Beside her, Imoogi moved first to strike the creature, pulling back her dart and launching the piece into the air. Nymoria felt her excitement as the dart impacted with the creature, before watching it spiral off into the ground far below them, unable to penetrate beneath the feathers of the beast's body.

Get do-

Her words were cut off as she rolled off to the side, avoiding the outstretched talons of the creature that was attempting to grab them. She rolled to her feet, turning just in time to see the thing slam Imoogi into the distant ground, before landing on the ground in front of her.

Silently, carefully, Nymoria rushed forward, driving outwards with the javelin in an attempt to stab the creature from behind. She felt the resistance of the feathers for the briefest of seconds, before the blade slid through and connected with something underneath.

She didn't have time to celebrate, however, as the creature shrieked and took to the sky again, a flutter of wings and feathers as it left the two on the pathway, circling above them. Keeping an eye on it, Nymoria shuffled over to Imoogi, keeping the javelin's point skyward in a defensive manner.

You okay...? You took quite a hit there-

She was cut off as the giant bird slammed into Nymoria, forcing her back against the wall before taking off again. She felt the burning heat as something within herself seemed to crack ever so slightly, the pain familiar to other encounters. Gods that pain limiter being off really makes a difference...come on you fluttering, flying jackass, let's do this!

"I... I'm fine!"

And she was fine, in a way. Sure, she was in tremendous pain, but the adrenaline surging through her veins took the edge off of it. She got to her feet, a wide and fanged grin on her face. "Having the time of my life!"

She pulled another vial off her belt - this one had an angry looking red goop in it. She held it out to Nymoria. "Here, slather this on your spear. It's Fever-venom, courtesy of some very angry bugs in the jungle. Should mess with it's head pretty bad!"

She hadn't brought any healing potions - at least, not any strong enough to bother with right now. But she could take a moment to catch her breath, to get her senses back in order - and to slide down the rocks as the raveness swooped again, this time narrowly missing Imoogi with its claws. She landed on a solid surface, and turned her eyes upwards.

She raised her hands, and flipped the fucking bird two "birds" of her own.

Nymoria glanced at the bottle that the snake-woman was offering, before accepting it. Carefully applying it to the tip of the javelin, she turned her attention towards the sky again, looking for the giant bird creature. She handed the bottle back as she finished applying the liquid-like substance, unsure if the woman would want to reuse it or not.

The whisper of wind above her made Nymoria turn, just catching sight of the talons as they picked her up from above, trying to drag her back skywards. Snarling, she lashed out, trying to slam the tip of the javelin into the creature from below, desperately attempting to free herself from the grasp.

The bird seemed to scream slightly as the tip of the spear sliced it open, dropping her from its hold and letting her free fall the few metres it had risen upwards. She felt her body slam into the ground, the impact driving the wind out of her, and a moment of severe pain before everything suddenly went dark, leaving her blind.

Imoogi turned Nymoria's way as she fell. She'd survived her own fall, so obviously Nymoria would too, right...?

...and yet, she wasn't moving. There was no party HUD to look at, but from the way she lay there, she didn't think she'd be getting up again anytime soon.

"This fucking bird...!" Imoogi drew out several more darts, and threw them at the swooping raveness. This time they found purchase past the feathers, causing the bird to briefly falter in its flight. "Get down here, you dumb chicken!"

It didn't understand, but it certainly complied. Imoogi dove out of the way, letting the bird scrape against the ground. As it spiraled back into the air, she pulled out another potion, and knocked it back. The world began to swim, but...

The raven returned. It dove, and this time it's claws found purchase on Imoogi. She couldn't free her arms, but she was ready this time. She opened her mouth and sunk her teeth into the bird's talons, drawing a painful screech from the raveness.

In the end, it was the final drop that knocked her unconscious.

Chrrk. Chrrk. Chrrk.

The smell of rot was an acrid perfume. The nest was a wall of branches and brambles tangled with cloth and rotting remains.

Chrrk. Chrrk. Chrrk.

Somewhere above, the raveness watched, eyes glinting in the waning sunlight. Still weak, still oozing from inflicted wounds, but alive and well out of the way.

Chrrk. Chrrk. Chrrk.

The nest is not empty. Cracked shells litter the ground, but a few still remain. One among them was larger than the rest. Something about it didn't seem right - the color, the shape, the patterns. It rocked gently.

Chk! Chk! Chk!

Cracks spiderwebbed across the surface, accompanying the constant tapping. Within, something was moving, and ready to escape.

"Urrrgh..."

Nymoria twitched, barely conscious. She was sure that she had just had the worst possible moment of her entire gaming life. Everything hurt, and as Nymoria tested her limbs, she had a sudden thought. Wait...if I died, shouldn't I have like, respawned and not be sore anymore?

The realisation caused her to jerk awake, sitting up suddenly and groaning in response. The pain overwhelmed her for a moment, and she reached out with her arm in order to stabilise herself, swaying as she sat in place with her eyes blinking wildly.

Where in the fuc-

She blinked again, looking at her outstretched hand as she realised what it was touching. Is that...an egg? That's huge. What the hell kind of egg is...oh...oh no... She glanced around as the realisation settled into her mind, looking for any confirmation of her fears.

It was then that the smell hit her, and Nymoria found herself recoiling in disgust. Covering her mouth with her hand, which did little in the end.

Ugh...that is the most disgusting, horrible smell...absolutely disgust-

She stopped as she realised she wasn't alone, suddenly spotting the snake-woman in the nest alongside her. She crawled across to the girl, shaking her slightly before realising that it was probably causing as much pain as Nymoria was feeling.

Hey...hey, you alive?

Imoogi groaned as Nymoria shook her. "Ugh... yeah, yeah, I'm alive. Barely."

She sat up and held her pounding head with both hands. The taste in the air clung to her tongue, mixing rot with the bitter aftertaste of poison into an absolutely horrible concoction. "Almost wish I wasn't... why does it smell so bad..."

She finally looked up, staring past Nymoria at the filthy nest, and the slowly cracking egg within it. "...oh."

Chk. Chk. Chk.

She looked up at the raveness - injured, and perched just out of range of her darts. It was smart enough to understand that, it seemed. Its eyes were focused on the rocking egg, its feathers puffed as it croaked in its direction.

Imoogi shook her head. For some reason, it seemed... nervous? That wasn't right. She ignored that, and stood up shakily. "Of course it would drag us back to its nest to make us bird food... we gotta get out of here."

She staggered towards the edge of the nest, looking for a place where she could possibly climb. But what seemed like a safe handhold turned out to hide thorns, and she pulled back with a serpentine hiss, favoring a freshly scratched up hand. "Ow, damnit-!"

The Briar Nest

The Raveness has trapped you in its nest, with an ominously hatching egg. Escape won't be easy...

Each turn, roll a 1d100 and add the result to the hatching progress. When this progress reaches 500, the egg will hatch, which will start an encounter with whatever hatches from it.

On your turn, you may roll a DC 75 Expertise (Any) check to find or make a path to escape the nest. On a failure, you take 10 Retal as the thorns tear at you. At 3 successes, you successfully escape.

Alternatively, you may roll a DC 75 Attack on the giant egg. Add the resulting damage dealt to the hatching progress. The resulting amount of successes will be subtracted from HP if the egg hatches.

Nymoria watched as Imoogi began prodding around the edge of the nest, as if looking for a way out. She wasn't sure what good it would do, but as her eyes hovered over the egg, she knew that it was likely a better option compared to staying with that.

And here we thought this was going to be an easy fight...stupid bird. Now we know why no one else has picked this up yet...

She mumbled as she slid around the other side of the egg, deciding to search the opposite side of the nest from where Imoogi had been searching. Nymoria kept her eyes split between the egg, the giant Raveness in the distance, and the area she was searching on. She didn't trust the thing not to swoop in as they were busy trying to escape, but it seemed...almost hesitant to approach. That can't be a good sign...

She cursed as she slid her hand over a nearby portion of the nest, the thorns beneath cutting lightly into her hand - the pain still frustrating even though it didn't harm her too much. Keep an eye on what you're doing...

Nothing over here...anything over on that side?

Imoogi continued to pace around the nest, holding one sleeve over her mouth in attempt to keep the taste of rot from getting any worse. There were cool things about being a snake person, but right now this was not one of them.

"This nest is nothing but goddamn thorns, and I don't have fire or a machete-"

She paused. There was a place where the nest was just a bit thinner - where it looked like it had been torn away already. Considering the cloth caught on the thorns, it was all too clear just what had made the opening.

"Here! I think I found something!"

She grit her teeth and reached in, using the cloth scraps as a way to defend herself from the brambles. A few gave way, causing the nest to rustle disconcertingly. Above, the raveness squawked, wings half-raised as if it might swoop down at any moment...

...but the egg rocked and cracked, and the raveness did not move.

For the briefest of moments, she felt a pang of frustration and jealousy at the other woman having found something of use first - Shouldn't matter so long as we get out of here. - before she realised how foolish that was. It didn't matter which of them found the escape, so long as they found an escape.

She'd begun prodding around her area again, before noticing something in the centre, just beneath the egg itself. Risking a glance towards the Raveness - the giant bird clearly upset, but unwilling to come near the nest, just yet. Something about that reluctance wasn't sitting well with Nymoria, and it just pushed her towards wanting to escape faster.

I think I've got something over here...possible opening beneath the egg itself...just need...

...to move the giant egg out of the way, somehow. A task that would likely be easier than done, as she stared at the thing. Nymoria's right ear twitched as she tried to figure out how to use the newfound escape route - assuming it was even an escape route, and not simply a drop to their death...

-10 HP from briar nest

"You want to do what?"

The idea of getting closer to the egg at all was repulsive in a way that Imoogi didn't fully understand. There was something about the frantic energy of the raveness above that was almost infectious - the sense that there was something wrong with it...

She spent a little longer trying to tear out her own shortcut - but she soon found more thorns than handholds. After pricking her hands again, she gave up and joined Nymoria near the ominous egg. "God, I would have preferred the bird just killing us and letting us respawn..."

It was really far too large for an egg - even something as big as the raveness. Its surface was oddly mottled, with portions thin enough to see something shifting within. As if in response to their proximity, that something stopped tapping for a moment, rocking the egg as it turned, and pressed a pair of eyes to the thinning membrane of the shell.

Chrrrk-k-kh?

"Fuck!"

She jumped back, hissing loudly. "What was that? What the fuck is that?" Whatever that had been, it had not looked like a proper bird at all. "We need to get out of here. I hope to god this is a real exit..."

The large eyes slid away, and the egg's rocking began to intensify as the creature within thrashed. Above, the raveness began to croak in response. Excitement? Fear? It was impossible to tell. But whatever it was, the egg was starting to hatch even faster than before...

The egg has noticed you. In its excitement, it redoubles its efforts to escape.

Each turn, roll a 2d100 and add the result to the hatching progress.
