Sunny looked melancholic as Astrid accurately delved into the depths of her psyche. Poor, pathetic little thing. She had no idea why Sunny was in such a pitiable state, but she could imagine that a sequence of self-esteem robbing events in her life had lead her to this point. Perhaps with enough prying, she might get to find out the rest with time. How delicious. Fodder for eventually breaking Sunny was a treat Astrid would always accept.

Like the good little pet that Sunny was slowly turning into, she promised to work on her conversational skills. The happy yet reserved smile that spread across Astrid's face was like the twinkling of the sun on freshly fallen snow. Sunny confessed to feeling worried about the way she sounded and the anxiety that plagued her every attempt at speaking. Astrid inclined her head slightly as Sunny trailed off, understanding immediately what she meant. Someone so regal, so composed, so frankly superior as Astrid... Was that what Sunny had in mind? It would be easy to laugh and reassure her, but once again, true manipulation was about taking things a step further.

"...So airheaded that she allows herself to be injured by an early quest mob? So clumsy that she almost scares away her new friend by casting the wrong spell? Darling, whatever you may think of me, I assure you I am far from perfect. Elegant and beautiful perhaps, but nowhere near perfection." She laughed softly into the back of her free hand. "You can't live your life being afraid, or you will always be alone. Make your mistakes. Allow yourself to sound 'dumb.' I can promise you that you will be neither as foolish nor as wrong as you think you will."

As they moved to the tavern, Sunny suddenly pulled her hand away, and Astrid felt a lightning bolt of anger light up her chest. How dare she presume to do such a thing? Astrid wasn't done with her yet, not by a long shot. By the time Astrid finished with her, she would beg for permission in the most flowery of tones before even daring to act against Astrid in this way. For now, she closed her eyes for a brief second and forced her calm to resurface. It wasn't as if she found Astrid's touch repulsive if her desperate clambering for Astrid's friendship was any indication. No, it must have been more anxiety, perhaps even concern that Astrid would be angry, that drove this. For the first time, Astrid properly exerted her will on the stoic woman as she promptly recaptured Sunny's hand. She gently laced their fingers together and waited until Sunny made eye contact before slowly shaking her head and smiling playfully.

The tavern was as loud and boorish as a so-called place for "peasants" was expected to be. Astrid could practically see the fantasy tropes as if they'd been painted on the wall. Boring. Yet, for all that, the crowds almost magically parted ways to allow them to pass. NPCs giving way to player characters as it should be. They found a table and Astrid finally released Sunny's hand on her own terms, giggling primly over Sunny's bit of shared information.
"I think you might be rather optimistic. There's no way a mere video game can match the nostalgia or taste of a finely grilled steak prepared by one's father. Still, I shall hope right along with you that it even comes close."

It wasn't long before a simple meal of steak and potatoes presented itself to the two women, and Astrid daintily cut herself a bite and sampled it. For an augmented reality experience, it was surprisingly good though its quality was certainly of a plebeian sort. When Astrid tended to dine at restaurants a pay grade or two above the average person, it was hard for anything to match her refined palate. Still, she looked surprised nonetheless. "Consider me surprised. Better than I thought," she noted out loud, dabbing at her lips lightly with a napkin before turning her attention to Sunny once again.

"Weekly barbecues with your father... It sounds lovely. I never really knew my own father, so I'm a bit envious. Tell me more about him. I'd love to hear stories of your childhood."

Sunny smiled tightly behind her mask, relieved a little bit by the woman's brand of self-deprecation. She had a charming way of making her feel better and alleviating her anxiety, even if it was hard to truly let it go fully. In a similar way, when she pulled back from Astrid, the woman made a point to recapture her hand, and she blushed deeply.

Was she really interested in her like that after such a short time? Why? What was Astrid seeing in her? Whatever the case, she had to admit it felt good. As their fingers interlaced, her heart skipped a beat, feeling guilty for pulling away and feeling small under that knowing, yet playful smile. She didn't keep eye contact for long, swallowing hard before turning her attention to where they were going, Astrid leading them.

"That's probably right. Here's to hoping." She tried to be a little light-hearted, hoping to offset her stoic and mysterious appearance and alleged personality a little bit. The part where they ordered was quick, and somehow even faster was the delivery of the food. She'd barely had time to reveal her face once more, wetting her lips with ale.

She took her bite of food just after Astrid, small bit of potato eaten along with the cut of steak. Somehow, it was better than she expected, and it did take her back to simpler times. It wasn't the best she'd ever had, by a good margin, but it left her unable to respond for several moments, savoring the juiciness and the meaty flavor.

Hiding behind her ale for another moment of respite, she finally nodded and began to talk while she ate, trying not to be rude and chewing fully between sentences, "Well, I didn't have a perfect home life, but he helped keep it consistent, at least. The weekend barbecues were kind of a family thing, so like my cousins and aunts and uncles would often visit on the weekends, or we would go to their house and they would barbecue. Sometimes we would even go to the lake and innertube behind my Uncle Kelly's boat. That was all my dad's side of the family. My mom and her side are kind of...awful, so we didn't go to their houses much." She paused, not wanting to ramble on for too long, but hoping that she'd done well enough to not be chastised for being bad at conversation again,

"What about you? What was your childhood like if you didn't know your father?" A bit of a hard question to ask, but she didn't want to pity her or anything like that. She certainly seemed refined and successful.

Once again, Sunny simply couldn't hold eye contact with Astrid. It was an irritating habit of hers, surely born of the undercurrent of low self-esteem present in Sunny's disposition. Once she belonged to Astrid, that habit would be broken, whether by carrot or by stick. Astrid would have Sunny's eyes on her and only her. That much was a promise. Still, it seemed that recapturing Sunny's hand had the desired effect. The woman was nearly beside herself with embarrassment. How adorable. She was like a dog just waiting to be beaten into shape.

Though it was obvious that she was trying much too hard, Sunny did make it effort to break through her wooden personality, much to Astrid's delight. She really could do it if she tried. The fact that she tried so hard purely for the sake of Astrid's approval was equally charming. What a good little mutt. Astrid resisted the urge to pet the girl on the head. Perhaps when she had Sunny kneeling on command, she could pat her like the inferior being she was. Ah, but now her thoughts were getting away from her. It was her own sort of bad habit to think so presumptuously when her target was all but secured.

They sat down to their meal, and Astrid ate with perfect poise, sifting the banal and useless information from Sunny's rambling story for anything that could be used against her. Family barbecues... How sickeningly wholesome. Truthfully, Astrid felt a deep loathing for such a loving interaction, which she wasn't afraid to admit was from a burning jealousy. She had never been afforded even the luxury of a family, much less something so pleasant as a family get together. In place of weekend outings, Astrid had harsh lessons about fighting for herself or starving. Instead of steaks and going out on the lake, she had meager scraps and the feeling of betrayal like a cold blade in her back.

All of this she kept locked behind her empty, ice-blue eyes as she giggled and nodded along with Sunny's stories. She noted the apparent estrangement from her mother's side of the family. Something to probe at perhaps. For now, there was a certain degree of reciprocity at play as Sunny understandably wished to know more about Astrid. The woman smiled and looked at Sunny secretively. She took her time cutting a piece of steak and carefully placing it in her mouth. As if to demonstrate her superior grace, she managed to eat and talk at the same time, deftly shuttling the morsel around so that the primitive mumblings of an uncouth eater never marred her speech.

"You cut right to the quick, don't you, my dear? Some would shy away from asking such a potentially distressing question," she chided with a gentle laugh, "But I don't mind. As they say, if you've never had something, you can never know what you're missing. My mother was a strong woman who raised me to be independent with or without the supposed influence of a father figure." Sunny could get a little tidbit of Astrid's self for the sake of luring her in, but she was nowhere near close enough to receive the full truth. If Astrid had her way, she never would be. "I'm sorry that it wasn't the same for you. What is it that is so 'awful' about your mother? It's a shame to be so estranged from the one who gave birth to you, isn't it?"

Sunny seemed a little apologetic about the idea that she'd asked the question after the fact, but retreated into her food. At least it wasn't related to trauma, and she seemed fine about it.

"Mom just wasn't a good person. We don't need to get into why, but trust me, my dad and I were better off when he divorced her and won custody of me. If you know anything about custody laws, you know she had to fuck up pretty bad not to win." She looked down at her food for most of it, then looked up to meet Astrid's eyes. This time, she did her best to maintain eye contact, hoping that it would make a better impression than what she'd made so far.

Little did she know that in those eyes, she'd find the solace she'd always looked for, and a spider-shaped demon spinning a web to catch specifically her. And to think, this was only their first meeting, and she was already captivated.
