They had returned back to the League after the somewhat failed mission in Aurora. While the pair had been able to map some of the areas once they had reached the stormy lands of the village it had been nearly impossible to properly document the surroundings. Still, between Yu's spatial awareness and Lúthien's drawing skills, they had managed a decent result on the map areas the pair had been able to figure out... only to be sent out again, and this time in the opposite direction.

"How do they not have maps of this area...? It's Eastern Brisshal!"

A part of her was convinced at this point that her mentor just liked to fuck around with the elf, and now it seemed that Yugam had started getting roped into these shenanigans too. Another parcel, a common occurrence by this point, was safely hidden away in her UI inventory—meant for a woman that lived in a little outpost-turned-to-village known as Hovelis.

"Oh...! Yu, look at that!" Little by little the landscape around them had begun to shift as they got closer to Hovelis, the trees around this area not only larger but also containing a myriad of colors and shades rarely found in other parts of Eastern Brisshal. "That's a cool looking watchtower~"

Something about elven aesthetics was just irresistible for the blonde, and it had also been a large reason as to why Valeria had chosen the Yladian race for her avatar in the first place. Perhaps coming all the way out here to Hovelis wouldn't be as much of a drag as the elf had initially suspected...

"How do they not have maps of this area...? It's Eastern Brisshal!" Luthien complained as the pair walked side by side down the earthen path.

"Bruh, I dunno," the man responded, clearly not any happier about their task than she was. He could still remember the moment that their League supervisor had told them where they were going, and how they'd both given him the same look indignation. "General incompetence, stupidity, hell, maybe they got lost in a fucking fire or something." The man shrugged slightly, adjusting the rifle on his shoulder into a more comfortable position.

"I'm sure it has more to do with that package he asked us to deliver than it does with map-making," Unmei said, the sword-spirit walking alongside them.

"Yeah, could be," Yu replied flatly. Whatever the case, they were here now. And as long as they were getting paid at the end of it all, Yu figured he couldn't complain to much.

The man's gaze was drawn to a not too distance wooden structure, seemingly built out of one of the region's massive trees itself. "We must be gettin' closer to civilization," Yu said before, as the crested the hill they'd been walking over, the village came into view.

A small, sprawling community, the village proper shielded by the thick copse of trees that surrounded it. "That must be it," the man said as he caught sight of what he could only assume to be Hovelis. Looking back, the man made a quick mental gauge of where they were to the watch tower, and then from themselves to the village. "Bit more than a mile between the two," the man reported the largest of the two story buildings within the town serving as his point of reference.

"My bet's on incompetence... with stupidity nipping at its heels."

A sigh escaped her lips before the voice of Unmei carried over, the blonde turning to look at the weapon-turned-woman as she delivered a valid point. "Honestly that's probably the right guess... he's always doing this too." One of her earlier assignments had been delivering a parcel all the way to Neridan in Providence.

"It's like he thinks I'm a carrier pigeon..."

There was pout crossed her face as elven cheeks puffed out just slightly in indignation, before the voice of Ari caught the ranger's attention as he pointed the village through the thick trees that surrounded it. "Oh, that's super close~" There was zero hesitation from the elf when Yugam estimated how far away they were from Hovelis, by now she had witnessed first hand how accurate his measurements always were.

"Come on, let's hurry up and get there already~"

Without thinking twice about it Lúthien's hand reached for Yugam's, the girl happily pulling the man down the road in the direction of the village while also waving to Unmei so she would follow.

"Honestly, you should just start a postal service," the man joked before the girl suddenly grabbed his hand and started pulling him in the direction of the village. "Alright, alright, we're goin'" the man chuckled, eyes fixed on the sunny girl, missing the narrowed eyes that Unmei cast in their direction, before picking up her own pace to follow them.

Entering the village, the main throughways were oddly devoid of life, save for the birds and occasional dog or cat that they came across. "Uh, are we sure this is the right place?" Yu asked aloud, his hand slipping into his coat to wrap cautious fingers around the grip of one of his revolvers. It was strangely quiet. But despite that, nothing he saw gave any indication of the village being abandoned. It wasn't until the loud cheering of a crowd came around the corner that any sign of the village's occupants appeared. "Is there some Lander holiday?" the man asked, raising an eyebrow in surprise.

"Not that I know of," Unmei replied, having caught up to the two long ago. "Could be some other kind of celebration though," she suggested.

"Well, let's go."

She had almost missed the look that Unmei shot towards the back of Yugam's head... almost. Lúthien wasn't sure why, but she had the distinct feeling that Ari's jikdo wasn't exactly fond of her in the slightest. Though, aside from the accidental dream sharing, the elf couldn't really figure out why that was.

* * * * *

Her hand remained nestled in his own as the trip walked through the main entrance of the village, her eyes scanning the nearby houses and structures as the elf took in the subtle Yladian details that adorned them. It wasn't until Yugam spoke up that the blonde realized the village was oddly empty, her brows furrowing slightly in thought as a result before she closed her eyes. Carefully she tried to focus on the nearby sounds around them, her hand gripping Yugam's own softly to ground herself, before the faint sound of multiple voices drifted towards her ears from the far right corner of the village.

"I hear voices from that direction, uuuhm, north-west...?" Her hand pointed in the direction, which was actually just straight east, before a questioning glance was given to Yugam and Unmei. "Should we check it out...?"

"I hear voices from that direction, uuuhm, north-west...?"

"Luth," Yu said flatly, looking at the girl and waiting until her eyes locked on his. "That's east," he said, pointing to the morning sun hanging overhead. And that was probably one of the reasons that the League had decided to start sending him out on expeditions with her.

Making a mental note to get Luthien a compass while they were in town, the man gently tugged on the elf's hand as he started to move in the direction of the sounds. It wasn't long before the came upon the crowd either. It was as if the entire village had gathered, cheering as the sound of arrows sinking into targets one after the other filled the air.

"A contest?" Unmei said inquisitively, looking over at the two Travelers before looking back at the crowd.

"Beats me," the man said with a shrug. "Wanna go find out?"

"Luth, that's east."
"I k-knew that...! I was just testing you..."

Alright, yes, that was a goddamn lie—though a very poor one considering the rosy color that quickly crossed the elf's cheeks and brightened the tip of her elongated ears. Her sense of direction was absolutely abysmal, something her League mentor had learned after the very first delivery, and probably why the man now continued to pair the two traveler's together for these little expeditions. After all if they could return in a week instead of three that meant they could get more parcels delivered maps made for the League in a shorter amount of time.

"A contest?"
"Maybe...? It sounds like they're cheering..."
"Wanna go find out?"

"Mhmm~!" Her response was instant, a nod given to Yugam as she assented to his question while giving his hand a soft squeeze. "It sounds like something exciting is going on~"

"I k-knew that...! I was just testing you..."

Yu couldn't help but roll his eyes as they started to walk again, a humming a quiet "Mhmm," of skepticism as he did so.

Slowly making their way through the crowd, bodies pressing against them as they went, the cheering got louder the closer they got to the center of the crowd. Finally breaking through to a point where the trio could actually see what was going on, they'd made it just in time to watch what looked like one of the villagers take aim with his bow and begin to fire at a series of targets scattered around a shooting area. One set up against a building wall, another on a roof, one in a window, and three more hanging at various heights from what looked like the blacksmith's awning.

The boy fired slowly, hitting the first five with great precision. The one on the roof, however, arced and fell just short, thunking against the wood panel of the building. The boy's hands fell to his side as he looked on in disappointment before a man, wearing an olive green tunic, brown leather pants of boots, and most peculiar of all, the dark, worn tricorn cap, with a red feather stuck to the side, walked up and clapped the boy on the shoulder before gesturing for the boy to step aside. Lifting a bow of his own, the man took a deep breath before suddenly unleashing a volley of arrows, all six striking their targets in such quick succession, they sounded like the beat of a drum.

"Damn, that guy's a crazy good shot," Yu commented, Unmei nodding her agreement.

"Would anyone else like to test their skills against mine!?" the man asked the crowd, lifting his arms as they cheered for him.

Thunk...! Thunk thunk! Thunk... thunk!

Elven ears picked up the sound of various arrows as they met their targets, crimson eyes catching the last three as they each met their targets under the blacksmith's awning with relative ease. "Oh, it's an archery contest~!" Excitement quickly flooded her features as the elf looked, her hand gripping Yugam's excitedly in response once they found a decent spot to watch from.

A figure stepped forth, clasping the younger boy on the shoulder before he turned to look at all six targets. She heard the deep breath taken by the archer, his eyes closed for just a moment, before a volley of arrows was released in such a quick succession that it seemed almost impossible to be true.

Thunk, thunk thunk, thunk, thunk thunk!!!

"That's amazing...! Yu, did you see how fast he shot all of them?!" She almost squealed into his ear, an excited grin on her lips that quickly developed into a toothy grin once the man turned towards the crowd and asked for a new challenger. "Oh, me me me~!"

A hand was raised in the air as the blonde waved it happily, hoping to catch the attention of the archer.

"We have another contestant!" the archer shouted to the crowd before waving Luthien towards him with a hitherto motion. "Ah, and what a lovely young contestant she is!" the man shouted, working up the crowd who cheered in response.

"Ma'am, I saw you enter the crowd, so I will apprise you of the rules, and more importantly, the reward!" the archer said with a boisterous voice, before turning towards the shooting area with arms spread. "Here we have a series of target, six in total! One there," he said pointing at the standing target, and then to the other five in turn. "Three hanging from the smithy, one in yon window, and above that, one more roosting upon that poor man's roof! Now, the object of the game is simple, hit each target, each of which has a point value. Increments of ten, for ease of memory, going up the further away. But!" The man suddenly turned, looking at Luthien once more. "It is not enough to merely hit the targets. You must match my speed, or exceed it! If you succeed, you will earn yourself a hefty sum of gold, but more importantly! My eternal friendship. Do you believe yourself to be up to the challenge, lovely lady?"

The man acknowledged her, and the elf squealed in response before looking towards Ari—an excited smile on her lips as she gave his hand a final squeeze before letting go. "Wish me luck~" A few hand motions had a violin pop out from her storage, before her hands quickly unclasped the restrains and allowed it to unfurl into the custom made bow the blonde had acquired not too long ago. The riser clicked into place, causing the bow string to be taught and sturdy, before the elf listened as the man carefully laid out the rules for her.

"Okay... so the standing target first, then the smithy, over to the window and finally the roof." She carefully pointed at each one in turn as Lúthien mentioned them, ensuring the man nodded in agreement, before a nod of her own was given in return. "Alright then, I get to go first right?"

It was then he added another caveat into the mix, speed would play as much of a role into this contest as he accuracy, and Lúthien couldn't help but smirk in response as she assented with her head. "Hope you're ready for a show then~" Crimson eyes trailed over back to where Unmei and Yugam stood, lingering just a few moments longer on the hemomancer's face before the elf gave him a playful wink.

A hand reached back to her quiver, carefully feeling each arrowtip and counting out six from the bunch. Her eyes closed for a few moments, a long exhale released as the elf focused on drowning out all the noise from spectators, before taking one deep breath in preparation...

Thunk! Thunk thunk thunk! ... Crash! Thunk!

Her first show was almost a bullseye against the standing target, her hand quickly reaching back for the next arrow and knocking it back almost as soon as the one before it was gone. Three more flew in quick succession, easily hitting the targets on the blacksmith's awning, but it was then her overconfidence caused Lúthien's next arrow to fly higher than intended.

The sound of shattering glass caused the elf to flinch for a hot second, though her hand never stopped as she reached for the last arrow—choosing to worry over the property she'd damaged after the contest was over. The last arrow was nocked back and swiftly released, meeting its mark as it barely missed the bullseye much like her first. "Yes!" She couldn't help the excited shout as Lúthien confirmed five of the six arrows had hit their mark, the elf feeling pretty confident at the speed she'd displayed before her eyes turned to the man.

"Your turn, then~"

"Kick his ass!" Yu called to the elf as she stepped forward, grabbing her violin, quickly snapping it into it's bow configuration. The archer then gave his speech, explaining the rules of the game, the reward, all whilst hyping up the crowd who were eager for more, despite most certainly having had listened to the same spiel ten times over by now. This was likely the most excitement they'd had in years.

The crowd watched as Luthien readied herself, carefully fingering the feathers of her bow. Her chest rose and fell. Arrows flew, all in such quick succession, one after the other, fluids movements nocking and drawing the next arrow, releasing before the first had even hit it's target.

Though Yu winced at the sound of the breaking glass, knowing that that'd meant she'd missed one of her targets, the other five arrows all smacked with a satisfying 'thud' into the other targets, all damn near the center. "Hell yeah! Good shots, Luth!" Yu cheered his companion, clapping alongside Unmei and the rest of the crowd.

The archer's smile faltered for a moment as he watched the elf fire off shot after shot, missing only once. Even he would struggle to match her speed. And with such accuracy! But, there was still a show to put on. "Well done!" he congratulated the elf, the broad smile returning to his face as he turned to face the crowd. "I must admit, even I may prove to be little match for this young woman, but nonetheless! My time has come, and I must put my best foot forward!"

The man stepped up to the firing line again, lifting his bow just as before. An arrow was nocked, the string drawn back. By all rights, it was perfect form. But as the man prepared to achieve a speed he had never even attempted before, he faltered. The first arrow went, high arc over the standing target. The second landed squarely in the center, another landed into the smithy's forge, disappearing into building as the fourth flew into the window to join Luthien's arrow. The fifth arrow at least struck home, but the last, having not been drawn far back enough fell woefully short, speed not equating to power.

With a gracious frown, the archer turned to the crowd. "Alas, I, at last, met my better," he announced before turning to Luthien, producing a pouch, heavy with gold. "And to you, the victor, go the spoils, and just as I promised, you shall have my eternal companionship from this day forward!"

The crowd soon began to cheer, and Yu flashed a proud smile at the elf, clapping enthusiastically for her as he waited for her to step away from the firing line.

"My dear friends and patrons, I fear it is now time to bring this show to an end," the archer said to the crowd. "If it most pleases you, I would gratefully accept any patronage you'd care to impart upon me," he said as he bowed deeply. "But until next time, I bid you all 'Adieu!'"

"Kick his ass!"

Out of all the cheering his was the one that instantly stuck out the most for the young elf, earning a chuckle as she'd fiddled with the feathers at the end of her arrows shortly before the competition had began. Perhaps it had just been pure luck, or perhaps her sharpened senses had played a part, but for whatever reason Lúthien couldn't deny she felt in perfect form today—a fact that was soon proven as the blonde had nocked arrow after arrow with impressive speed and accuracy through her performance.

"I almost got all of them...?"
"Hell yeah! Good shots, Luth!"
"Well done!"

It felt like her heart would jump out of her throat at any minute then, adrenaline coursing through her veins as Lúthien had taken in the results of her shots. Aside from the broken window (something she'd have to see to after her match was done) the remaining arrows had all landed fairly close to the center of their targets—with only two missing the bullseye by a hair's breadth.

A hand rose to rub the back of her neck a bit awkwardly then, before crimson eyes turned to look at the older male elf as he continued on with the show. He was quite the theatrical man indeed, the crowd clearly waiting on bated breath for him, and as he got ready to fire the blonde carefully stepped back to give the man space... O-Oh... oh dear. The sudden display of archery wasn't one Lúthien, or most of those watching really, had expected to come forth—especially when he'd just done a marvelous display against the young opponent before herself.

She couldn't help but wince slightly when four of the arrows missed their intended targets, especially the third as it flew right into the smithy before generating a series of sounds that couldn't be related to anything good. Competitive as Luthien might be even she couldn't help but feel sympathy for the fellow elf, though to his credit the man accepted his defeat with grace.

"Alas, I, at last, met my better, and to you, the victor, go the spoils, and just as I promised, you shall have my eternal companionship from this day forward!"
"Thanks~ We should definitely have a rematch again some day!"

Lúthien didn't think much about the eternal companionship being mentioned by the fellow archer, giving a polite bow in return after she'd accepted the heavy pouch of gold and yeeted it into her UI inventory, before the blonde had turned and rushed towards Yugam with the biggest and brightest smile she'd probably held since he'd known her. Excitement still coursed through her veins, and before the elf knew it she'd leaped towards the hemomancer to close the distance. Her arms loosely wrapped around his neck, a light and airy laugh echoing from the elf as she spoke.

"I did it, Yu! I won~!"

If anyone ever asked Yu if he'd ever seen the sun rise, he'd answer 'yes,' and then think of the image of Luthien running towards him with this bright smile on her face, like all the joy in the world was suddenly hers to cherish. What could he do except smile back and catch her as she leapt into his arms?

The man laughed as he caught the elf, briefly spinning her around and setting her back down on the ground, but not before stealing a kiss from her lips. It had been an action without thought, something that happened because either the universe willed it, or something within Yu's own soul yearned for it. He'd never been good at knowing those things, but even still, his lips lingered for a moment, relishing in the softness of hers before parting.

"Good job, Luth," the man congratulated the elf, a broad grin on his own face. "You kicked his ass."

"Ahem." A series of coughs interrupted their brief moment, and looking over, the pair would see the archer staring at them plainly, whilst Unmei stood with her arms crossed, foot tapping the ground impatiently, reminding them that they still had a package to deliver.

"I do believe we should apologize to the woman who's house that was," the archer said giving the pair a pleasant smile, before pointing at the house.

"Uh, right. Yeah," Yugam muttered, releasing Luthien from his embrace. "So, uh, window first, package after?"

He'd caught her, the elf giggling happily as the hemomancer spun her around a few times. Finally he lowered her down, the ranger's boots softly touching the ground, but before Lúthien could say anything she'd quickly been silenced as his lips pressed against her own. She instinctually pressed her body against his in response, a smile tugging at the corners of her lips even as the embrace around his neck tightened slightly.

Eventually they'd parted as Yugam congratulated her, a faint pout encroaching onto Lúthien's lips at the distance, before a series of coughs from the transformed sentient sword reminded the blonde where they actually were. Wait... had the archer been standing there this entire time? The thought caused the tip of her ears turning red in light embarrassment, Lúthien had assumed the elf would simply go and carry on with his day.

"A-Ah, r-right... the window!" She remained close to Yu even when the man released her from the embrace. "Y-Yeah, we should check that out first—after all my arrow was the one that b-broke it."

She wasn't entirely sure why the other elf was tagging along, although a part of Lúthien assumed it was perhaps because his arrow had also entered the house... or maybe just a sense of responsibility since he'd been hosting the event?

The tricorn wearing archer began to lead the way to the broken-window house, occasionally waving back at one of the village people who'd greeted him as the party walked. "Ah, but it was I that organized our little competition," he said to Luthien as he waved at yet another villager, "so it is only appropriate that I apologize along side you, miss...my apologies, but I do not believe to have caught your name."

Behind the two elves, Yugam and Unmei walked side by side silently. It was clear to the man that the sword-spirit was upset, but exactly why was a bit of a mystery to him. "What's up?" he asked, looking over at the girl.

"Nothing," she said.

"Uh huh. Nothing. That's why you look like you're gonna stab someone."

The woman rolled her eyes in response, glancing over and staring daggers at him. "I don't get why you two insist that you're not together," she said in a hushed tone.

"Wait, this is about me and Luth?"

"Yeah. I mean, you're just leading her on at this point, Yu. Or she's leading you on, either one isn't good."

"Hey, neither of us are leading the other on, okay? We're just friends."

"Yeah, 'just friends' that make out with each other in the middle of the town square."

"What's it matter to you anyways?"

The girl's eyes narrowed at him, brows furrowing in anger before she gave up trying to argue with the man, focusing on the road ahead.

The older elf began leading the trio down the road towards the house in question, turning to Lúthien as he echoed the very thoughts she had been thinking. "Mmm yeah, that makes sense... and it's also very responsible of you." Hopefully the owner of the house wouldn't be too pissed, but if worse came to be the ranger didn't mind sparing some of her newly won golden coins to get the window repaired.

"... my apologies, but I do not believe to have caught your name."
"Ah, it's Lúthien... and you are?"

Little by little the elf had seemingly gotten closer without the blonde realizing it, Yugam's footsteps having slowed down just enough for the hemomancer to catch up with Unmei as they whispered to one another. At first Lúthien hadn't even noticed, the older elf besides her continuing to engage her in idle chitchat as they walked, until a particular whisper caught the blonde's attention.

"... you're just leading her on... or she's leading you on..." If she'd been a beastfolk her ears would've immediately perked up out of instinct, as it stood elven ears had less mobility... but they certainly began to strain in hopes of catching more of the conversation. "... just friends."

There was a faint wince upon hearing those words, a fleeting but sharp sensation suddenly flaring inside her chest, before the elf besides Lúthien was speaking again as he tried to grab her attention. She gave a soft nod, accompanied by a polite chuckle at whatever the man had just said—having caught absolutely nothing of that as her ears continued to strain trying to keep track of the conversation going on behind them.

"... 'friends' that make out with each other in the middle of..."
"What's it matter to you anyways?"

It was then that the elf had ventured to glance backwards, curiosity getting the best of her, just as Unmei's frustrated gaze turned forwards. For a moment Lúthien's crimson eyes met with the woman's own grey stare, a blush coloring her elven cheeks before Lúthien hastily turned her head around... just as the tricorn wearing elf stopped by the door of a house and rapped his knuckles loudly against the front door.

"Cooomiiing...! Ah, if it isn't Connington... finally came over to pick up your stray arrows, huh?"

A young woman had opened the door, her eyes quickly glancing over the small party assembled at her doorstep before zeroing onto the older elf. Her face was serious, an unimpressed look given to the man as she spoke, and a part of Lúthien couldn't help but wonder if there was some history between the two.

"Aha, yes, you know me too well," the elf chuckled as he bowed deeply before the woman. "I apologize that this happened again, I was certain that I had provided a large enough target to cover the window this time."

"Connie, that's the same target you use every year," the woman replied, crossing her arms and feigning annoyance, despite the amused smile on her face.

"Wait this happens every year?" Yu whispered to no one in particular as a confused eyebrow rose. If he was the woman, he would've kicked the elf's ass by now. That just went to show that some people had the patience of a saint, the man supposed.

"Uh, might we come in? This young lady needs to retrieve her arrow as well," the elf, Connie, said, gesturing towards Luthien.

"Oh, of course, come in, come in. Don't worry about your boots, I needed to sweep all the dust out of here anyways, come in," the woman replied, ushering the four into her home.

"Wait this happens every year?"
"Apparently...?"

She;d fallen back a bit when they had reached the main door of the home, allowing Connington to have the space as he'd knocked and engaged with the woman that lived in the abode. Her ears easily picked up the whispered words of Yugam, the blonde replying back with equally hushed words while she observed the interactions between the older elf and the human woman. It was hard to tell if the woman was just being passive-aggressive to the elven man, or if she actually did get along with Connie as she called him.

"You're a charming delight as usual," Yeah, Lúthien really couldn't tell what was the actual dynamic between these two, the elf giving a polite nod towards the woman as the man began ushering them in. "Come, come! Those arrows aren't going to find themselves after all."

She couldn't help but try and clean her boots slightly upon hearing the woman's comment towards Connington, before the owner of the house shook her head as she addressed the blonde. "You're alright dear, don't worry about it." Her hand waved to invite the elf and her friends inside as well, before eventually closing the door behind them as the last one stepped inside.

"Thanks for having us over... and s-sorry about your window, my arrow was the one that actually struck it first and caused it to shatter." She really should've aimed better, but Lúthien had just been too excited about the contest and focused on speed that her fingers had slipped slightly before the release of that particular arrow. "Let me know how much it'll cost to repair it and I'll cover it."

"Wait, this happens every year?"

"Apparently...?"

"Maybe it's some kind of tradition?"

"Breaking the lady's window?"

Unmei shrugged in response, "Maybe he likes her?"

As they all entered the house, Yugam looked around, taking in the living room. It was simple, but nicely adorned. A worn, but well-taken care of table, surrounded by matching chairs. Some trinkets sat atop the mantle of the fireplace, and there was even a quilting chair by the fireplace, next to it a basket full of yarn and a half finished quilt hanging over one of the arms.

"This is a nice home you have here," the man said to their host.

"Ah, why thank you. It's not much, but I'm fortunate enough to have all this to myself." Yu had to admit, the two story home was a little large for it's singular occupant, but surprisingly, many of the buildings and homes in Hovelis had seemed to be at least two stories.

Luthien apologized to the woman as she'd entered and the woman smiled kindly at the elf. "Oh, don't worry yourself about it, dear. This happens all the time, I have a stash panes stored beneath the bed. If you could help me replace it though, that'd be lovely."
