After spending a night in Lala's Lakelodge, the group had to escort a carpenteer that had been contacted to fix the caravan. Getting there, the sight of a man tucked into layers and layers of blankets inside of the vehicle was something mildly comical for Magnolia, but she remained solemn during the whole process of taking the caravan out of the snow so the carpenter could start their work.

It was an easy task to do, and even if the driver, Magnolia or Yume didn't have the strength necessary to help, Zera, the carpenter and the horses seemed to compensate the brute force necessary for the task, all while Trevor tried to guide the horses and the group.

In no time, the caravan was fixed and ready to go, with Trevor paying the carpenter handsomely before ordering the driver to take off.

Even with a larger group, the caravan still looked fairly spatious, allowing the maid to move around (somehow despite the vehicle shaking) to try and serve them.

"Would you like anything, master?" She asked, then facing the guests. "Madam Yume? Sir Zera?" Magnolia bent near a chest that was by the back of the caravan.

Yume glanced out over the open, snow-covered fields. A scene that she didn't see often in the real world, at least not since her younger days. It reminded her of her mother's home, and the winters they would get that could chill a person in seconds.

She had felt a moment of pity towards the driver, whom had been tasked to stay the night with the caravan - all while the others had remained within the lodge, or exited the game itself like Yume had. Thankfully, she'd had the day off today and was able to return to complete her end of the agreement - a fact she hadn't considered when she first agreed to help the caravan out.

Oh...uhm, no, thank you Magnolia-san. I'm alright for now.

She didn't think she could even consume something with the swaying of the caravan, if she had wanted to. It moved in ways that she wasn't used to - far different from her bike back in the real world. It wasn't discomforting, but it certainly had a sway that was causing her to grip the sides lightly just to keep from sliding around every so often.

You've been awfully quiet this morning, Zera-san...everything okay?

She glanced at the larger man with a questioning look, unsure if he was deep in thought or simply tired. She'd come to learn that not everyone was used to staying up late, and getting up early in the morning - something she had been surprised at, when she'd originally left Japan.

The man wept among a sea of bodies. An ocean of lost souls, friend and foe alike. An incomprehensible loss of life. He hung his head over the remains of a person who hated him, why could he only feel pity? The man stood at a table, looking down at his patient, sensing the ebb and flow of life pulsing like a ruby red flame. The man walked through a cavern, reaching out to the lime green spirits that gently brushed against his fingers. The man tried to smile from his heart. But he could only grieve. The man stood at a crypt, his features sunken and worn. He placed his hand on the stone and brushed the leaves away. A ruby red flame appeared in his right hand, a lime green in his left. He crushed them both in his palm. Blue-white light erupted from his eyes and same-such flames erupted on his body. His lips parted as he reached toward the crypt in desperation.

W͗̆͢i̪̼͐͒l̦̓͡l̲ͨ y̫̜ͨ̍̎͞ő̢̫͕u̍ ẅ̔ͧ͑a̸͎͌̆̐l͈̥ͅk̖̭̳ͣͦ̆̉ w̧͇͉iͯt̹̫̣͛̐ͫh͖̝̙̅ me͛_̘̩̎̓ a͉g̙̯̿a̧̙̋̄i͍ͥͯ͘͜ͅn̓́̋̋?̢̭̣̙̍̾

The dream had sent Zera tumbling out of his bed in the dead of night, a cold sweat sticking to his skin. He dragged himself, pale faced, outside and into the whipping winds and unforgiving snow to retch. It was the same dream as the last time. Those horrible images. Every day they plagued his mind and weighed on his thoughts. What did it mean?

The next day he sat in the spacious interior of the carriage, his eyes a bit sunken from lack of sleep and his hair a bit of a mess. Even so, he kept his posture straight and his white-blue eyes ahead in a show of strength. He wasn't going to let a few missed hours get to him. He'd done a full residency at a hospital for goodness sakes! Lack of sleep was nothing.

Idiot. These symptoms... lack of sleep isn't the problem and you know it, he chastised himself. He forced himself not to look in the direction of the others, for fear of showing how nervous he was. Something was wrong with his mental state. What if he lashed out at them on accident? It would crush him. He forced back the sigh and leaned back against the wall behind him, wondering how Brisko and his pack were doing. They obviously couldn't fit in the carriage and had opted to follow at a distance, playing rear-guard for the caravan.

Magnolia spoke to him but he didn't notice at first, lost in his thoughts. When it finally hit him that she was looking at him he blinked a few times and sat forward, rubbing the back of his neck and letting out a hearty laugh.

"Oh! Ah ha! Sorry! A coffee please, if that's possible!" he grinned sheepishly and glanced at Yume who was giving him a questioning look. He relaxed and offered her a gentle smile. "I'm fine, just missed a few winks! WA HA HA! Nothing I can't handle!"

For emphasis he stretched his arms and gave a big flex, a sparkle coming off his face as he did his best to show off his "impeccable" health.

"Alright, madam Yume."

Magnolia nodded at Yume excusing herself from having anything for now, while glancing at Zera as soon as Yume had pointed out the quietness of the man. The maid wasn't one to meddle too much, but considering someone else already had done the job, she kept her ears and attention up for the answer of the man, while starting to work on his request.

Impressively enough, the caravan did have the tools necessary to get some coffee, and Magnolia was quick regarding it, soon having a coffee pot ready to pour some on a cup so she could hand it to Zera.

"All yours, sir Zera..." She said, continuing to listen and seeing the man's situation, with a hint of doubt crossing her mind as she saw the rather 'forced' show off that he was pretty well, when everything else indicated otherwise.

She, however, remained quiet, leaving such a work to Yume to tackle.

Yume couldn't help but wonder if Zera was overcompensating on his commentary, trying to reassure her that it was simply a lack of sleep that caused his entrance and behaviour to be...different. Something about the man seemed off, although Yume couldn't quite say for certain whether she was simply imagining things or not.

Her thoughts were pulled away from her as the caravan slammed over a rather large bump, causing Yume to wince in response. She was far from accustomed to riding in such older methods, the ride nothing like her Subaru back in the real world.

It's quite Odorokubeki that you can manage to handle coffee during a ride like...this.

She waved a hand at the wood around them, as if trying to point out the general vehicle they rode in. She shook her head slightly at the same time, a small smile spreading across her face. She figured she would have to get used to this, and likely more, if she were to remain engaged in this world.

I completely forgot to ask...where is it we are going?

Zera brightened when Magnolia approached with the coffee, eagerly taking it with a smile and a nod of his head. He took a sip and savored the feeling of caffiene purging the tiredness from his system. He knew that feeling all too well from working late nights and even sleepless streaks of time while studying in the real world. He had been careful to rest as much as possible here in this world, but some things escaped him now and then.

"Ahh... thank you Magnolia, this is great!"

He gripped the cup in his hand steadily as they hit the bump, tilting it to avoid it sloshing onto his hand and glanced in Yume's direction. She had brought up a good point that he was wondering as well. He didn't mind traveling with them, since it helped expand his horizons and get a better grasp of where he was. He also figured they'd probably be asked to help defend the caravan if it was necessary.

His expression stilled a little at that, he didn't like fighting to cause harm. A good spar was exhilarating, but hurting someone was wrong. He dismissed the thought, praying that it wouldn't come to that, and sipped at his coffee.

"It'll be an adventure no matter where we're off to, I'd say!"

He leaned back a bit and relaxed, no need to get tense. Just enjoy the ride.

Magnolia looked at Yume, nodding briefly before bowing her head. "It is part of my training, madam Yume. It fills me with joy to know you are impressed by it." Albeit the words mentioned joy, not a single muscle of Magnolia's face moved, remaining emotionless as usual. A similar bow was then given to Zera, and she lifted her head while adding: "I am glad to know, sir Zera. Try to not let it spill on you, however, it is way too hot." She adviced.

With those who requested something having their orders set, Magnolia finally afforded to take a break and sit down, letting out a brief sigh in between her teeth, hidden behind a thin opening of her lips.

"For now, we are heading to Finweald. My master desires to do a bit of business, and-"

Before she could elaborate, the caravan suddenly stopped, interrupting their conversation.

"Hm? What's wrong, driver?" Trevor finally stood from his seat, ceasing his silence to look at the man. "Don't you tell me you ruined our caravan again." His tone was severe.

"N-no sir! It... It is just that there is a fallen tree on the path..." The rider said, worried about any retaliation.

The sudden jerk of the caravan coming to a stop had caught Yume off guard, and she found herself sliding ever so slightly towards the front as the momentum that had been carrying them suddenly shifted. She managed to catch herself, thankfully, before colliding with anything or anyone - but it was a good reminder to her that even if this was slower than her normal transportation, it still carried a modicum of momentum to it.

A tree? I wonder if a storm passed through here recently...we could try moving it out of the way?

No sooner had she jumped from the wagon and swung around its side to face the tree, that she realised her hope of simply moving it was destroyed. The piece was easily half a metre in diameter, and weighed far more than Yume could likely lift - even with the help of the others.

Does...anyone have a Te nokogiri?

She glanced at the back of the wagon, hoping to spot something of use, before glancing up at Magnolia and the others, waiting to see if any of them had any better ideas for how to clear their path.

Zera felt the lurch in the carriage and steadied himself, but unfortunately it wasn't enough to stop the splash of a little coffee onto his hand. He grit his teeth against the heat and coughed, setting the cup down. He turned his attention instead towards the front where word came back that a log had fallen in the middle of the road. Before he even had a chance to speak Yume had already bounded out of the carriage. His expression firmed, something wasn't sitting right.

He stepped out next to her and looked at the large log. His eyes casting over the length of it. None of the other trees nearby looked old enough to fall similarly and the bark looked fresh. A nagging feeling rose up his spine in a thrill. That was it, his luck had been too good recently. It was bound to rebound eventually. He whipped his head around, trying to spot what was coming before reaching into his inventory and grabbing his axe.

"Stay close to the caravan, Yume."

His words were firm as he rolled his massive shoulder and popped his neck, stepping towards the fallen wood. He steadied his posture and raised the hatchet over his head, tensing his muscles and straightening his back. He took one step back and then forward as he threw momentum into the swing. He didn't quite understand how masteries worked, he didn't have any special powers that he knew of. But he did have the body the glitched system had given him.

BOOM!

In a swing he cleaved through half of the heavy trunk. He yanked the axe back and examined the head, it was cracked in several places. He frowned and tossed it aside before reaching into his inventory and grabbing another...

Magnolia adjusted herself, recovering from the sudden brake of the caravan and casting a brief glance at the driver, then at Trevor.

"Please wait here as well, master... I will analyze the obstacle with sir Zera..." She said, stepping out of the caravan, and similarly looking at Yume, giving her a reassuring nod before hurrying right behind the large man, peering from behind his back to analyze the tree.

Something was definitely off, and it was easy to figure out as soon as they got near enough, with footprints laying near the edges of the path, even if they were slightly 'erased'.

The strong hit on the wood made Magnolia shift her gaze to Zera, before slowly approaching him as he was about to take another axe. "Sir Zera, something isn't..." But before she could finish her sentence, bolts whistled through the air, slashing on the maid's cheek while some deflected on her pauldron, while others went straight to Zera as well, distracting them as a figure suddenly leaped above the tree, throwing a wide slash that would either send them stumbling backwards or would be one more addition to their wounds.

Magnolia gritted her teeth, wincing as she looked above.

A beautiful woman, slanky, with shimmering silvery hair, and a sharp gaze towered over them from the fallen wood that continued to serve as an obstacle for them, wielding a sword in which she handled dexterously and with expertise.

"... Surround all the exits..."

The leader's order was immediate, and the bandits took their arms up, aiming for the travelers from the treelines that were at each side of the road, while other bandits took the rearguard in a quick and calculated movement, almost as if it was a choreography that has been rehearsed countless times.

A moment of silence remained as the bandit leader stared down her targets with a cold gaze, as freezing and shivering as the snow their feet were sunk on.

"... Bring them down."

Her order was firm, and despite that, only a handful of bandits charged in, while others remained with their crossbows risen.

Yume, Trevor and the Driver would soon be approached by scouts, that were quick to surround and attack them.

????, THE BANDIT LEADER

❰ 500 / 500 ❱
❰ 1600 / 1600 ❱

Enemies

The Bandit Leader does the following actions every cycle (that starts at the end of Magnolia's post, and ends at the start of Magnolia's post):
  1. Counter. Your attack is countered, roll a DC 60 Reflex Save. If you fail, you take a damage equal to 30% of your last attack on her, if you succeed, you take 10% instead. If no one has attacked her in the cycle, she deflects the attack on a random ally, applying the same effect on their attacker.

  2. Dirty Blow. You are kicked on your knees, is sweeped, or is thrown snow on your eyes before being hit. Roll a DC 60 Fortitude Save. If you fail, you take 60 damage and becomes Immobile for a cycle, if you succeed, you take 20 damage.

  3. Feint. You are about to receive an attack, but at the last moment, it turns out to be just a trick to distract from the true blow. Roll a Will Save. Subtract the result of your save by 100, and the difference is the damage you will take.

  4. Precise Strike. You are attacked with a fierce and undodging attack. Take 50 damage.
On top of these attacks, the Leader has the following passives:
  • Reinforcements. Each cycle the Leader remains undefeated, roll 1d2. On a 1, a new Scout joins the fight. On a 2, a new Arbalist joins the fight. Instead of the usual 'Retal' mechanic, however, each of the Scouts or Arbalists attack a random target, dealing damage equal to its 'Retal'. Currently, the Leader has 2 Scouts and 1 Arbalist.

  • Leadership. The Reinforcements that attack on the same zone as her, deal extra 5 damage.
If the Leader's SP reaches to zero, her Passives stop working. She will always attack the target that generates the highest threat in the cycle, and she will move to the zone they are in currently.

Cycle 0 Actions

Leader engages the combat in 'Fallen Tree' Zone. She deals 20 damage on @Zera Leigh and @Magnolia.

2x Scouts joins the fray at 'Caravan' Zone. They deal 10 damage on @MayoYume.

Arbalist joins the fray at 'Treelines' Zone. They don't have anyone to attack.

When the Leader, or one of the character's HP reaches 0 (zero), a special event will be triggered.

Zones

  • Fallen Tree. The area where a tree has fallen. You can make a DC 60 Fitness Check as a Free Action to climb the tree, using it as a high ground. While on top of the tree, you roll your attacks with advantage, but if you are hit, you must make a DC 60 Reflex Save to not fall and take 10 extra damage. (Bandit Leader, Zera and Magnolia are in this Zone)

  • Treelines. This area is covered by dense vegetation. Attacks in it are made with disadvantage, but you receive less 10 damage. (1x Arbalist is in this zone)

  • Caravan. This area has a vehicle and horses. You may try to use the Caravan to cover yourself, receiving 5 less damage. And you may unleash one of the horses to let them go wild against the enemies, which will remove up to two enemies from the field. This can only be used twice. (Yume, Trevor and the Driver are in this zone)

  • Path. This area is plain and has no major obstacles. No advantages or disadvantages are gained here.
You may move from Zone to Zone using 2 Movements, and may only target people in the zone you are in. If you have Extension, you may target anyone from any zone with any action. If you have Sharpshooter, you may attack anyone from any zone.

The booming sound of the axe was followed by an unnatural quiet, broken suddenly by the sound of a new voice. The woman it belonged to - appealing in imagery, but giving off a dangerous feeling - ordered those alongside her to assault the caravan and its occupants.

What more passed Yume wasn't able to pay attention to, reacting as one of the brigands rushed forwards and slashed out at her suddenly. She gasped as she scrambled backwards, trying to avoid the assault of the individual as best as she could while keeping herself between the individual and the other occupants of the caravan.

We're just travellers, heading to a destination ahead...there's really no need to do anything Bakagete, right? So why don't we just-Oi!

Her words were cut short as the scout lashed out towards her again, the blade swinging just short of her face as the individual tried to cut her words short. Something that he was somewhat successful with, at least. Yume knew that she needed to at least push the man backwards, and give herself some space before she was driven off the side of the caravan.

Yoshi...you were warned. Sutāfīrudobēru!

A burst of starlight erupted from her raised left hand, the energy coursing outwards and slamming into the scout as Yume tried to drive her attack backwards, all while keeping her own balance by placing her hand on the side of the caravan's short wall.

Koko no hitobito wa totemo shitsureidesu...Magnolia-san! Zera-san! Are you two okay?

She called out without looking from the men in front of her, the two seemingly adjusting their own centre of balance as they righted themselves for another attack. She steadied herself, waiting for the two to rush her again as she knew they would do, shortly.

Almost as a secondary considered, Yume spoke another command word, causing a shimmering shield to erupt around herself in anticipation of the coming assault.

Zera raised the second axe over his head, ready to split the large tree in two when his senses went on high alert. He whipped his head to the left just in time to see a crossbow bolt whizz through the air and slash Magnolia's cheek. His eyes widened in surprise, what on earth? A second bolt followed it before he had an instant to think or react. The air was knocked out of him as the bolt drove across his shoulder, leaving a long, deep scrape.

An instant later, the woman appeared, her blade coming down in a wide arc that Zera narrowly avoided. Her words quickly registered and his hackles rose. He threw a hand out towards the caravan even as the scouts had begun to engage with Yume.

"Wait! NO! NO KILLING! WE CAN TAL-"

The first scout fell at Yume's hand and he felt his gut lurch. He whipped his head back towards the woman, his tiny ice-blue pupils growing hard. His jaw set and his lips formed a thin line. He turned his axe around in his hand so that the blunt end was facing outward.

"WE HAD ONLY A FEW PEOPLE! YOU COULD HAVE NEGOTIATED!"

He bellowed the words, darting toward her as his enormous muscles throbbed with growing force. He raised the weapon over his head and brought it down with terrible might. A mixture of fury and sadness in his eyes.

"NOW A MAN IS DEAD!"

He had ended a life before, the accident still grating on his conscience. How could someone bear to send their men into a situation where death was such a strong possibility? How could someone throw lives away when it was avoidable? Life was sacred, damn it!

Yume's spell was precise, sending the scout rolling backwards, knocking him out in a matter of a second, while Zera erupted in rage, striking the leader with his axe that slammed the woman aside, giving room for Magnolia to slip two needles from under her dress before leaping in and shoving them into the woman's ribs and torso, albeit both of the man and the maid's attacks were partially halted by the padded leather piece she had on her.

"... Hmph..."

She wrapped her arm around Magnolia's, and instead of trying to push her away, she pulled the maid in, trying to sink her blade into her guts in a malicious thrust, that was only barely being fatally avoided by Magnolia, though it didn't stop her from ripping part of her dress and flesh alike, bathing the blade with blood before finally pushing Magnolia aside.

Despite not being too vocal about it, Magnolia winced at the sting of her wound, gasping for air as soon as she was released, gritting her teeth and maintaining a stance.

"Put... Yourself together, sir Zera-" Magnolia warned, casting a glance behind, to look at Yume when she was questioned, just in time to notice the incoming enemy.

[ Madam, watch out! ] A mind message was sent, just a moment before the caravan was overriden by bandits, coming from all directions.

The remaining scout didn't waste time to feint with his blades, charging in and slicing and dicing with a blade after another, trying to cut Yume and attempt to halt her from doing another attack, shooting a smirk at her. "Sting, right?"

while two arbalists charged in, aiming for the driver that was rapidly trying to get the horses to move, perhaps to try and escape from where they came, but unfortunately, it was too late.

"Arrgh!"

He yelped, trying to slip into the caravan and hide, giving up on trying to get them away with the caravan. Trevor, seeing the tides of the battle going against them, turned to glare at the minions of the leader.

"This offense won't be overlooked."

Trevor snapped his fingers, with his left eye glowing with an azure flame, and spirits came forth from his grimoire, swirling around Yume, Zera and Magnolia.

The caravan had quickly become assaulted once more even as Yume had knocked one of them away. She hadn't needed the mind shout that had come from Magnolia - the voice in her head familiar to her, but distracting her for the single second it took for the driver to be overrun, before Yume could even come to his aid.

Not that she would have been able to get there, if she'd wanted to - the lone scout before her slashing at her in an attempt to drive his weapon deep into her. Her shield had held, however, turning away his blade even as she snarled at her.

I will give you one chance...to turn away now. Shindara sekinin torenai.

Not that she had any intent to kill the man, but she knew that anything less of a threat would likely be laughed away. She'd already tossed one of them like they were nothing more than a plaything - but clearly that hadn't dissuaded the second individual from thinking they could overpower her.

Yume gave the man two breaths before calling forth the power of the stars once more, her expression one of slight discomfort that may have been misread by the man before her. She detested what she was about to do - but reminded herself that the brigands were still attacking the driver behind her, and she needed to help the poor boy as soon as she could.

Sutāfīrudobēru! Ashurionbēru!

The words were whispered harshly almost as one, the power of her Astramancy lashing out towards the man in a glow of purple-tinged-blue as it slammed into him and threw him from the caravan towards a nearby tree, before leaving the body on the ground. Almost as quickly, she had spun to face the two Arborists who had bloodied the driver, snapping the shield into place around herself as she glared at them.

If you value your lives...Hashiru.
