Sai glanced left and right a few times, waiting for some sort of cue that Tenshi was done comparing. Receiving nothing, he slowly retracted the arm back to his side. Tenshi's idea that girls had to adhere to table manners... was not an ideal Angel shared at all. Sure, she always displayed some sort of manners, but she was a pop star, not an aristocrat; and one who was used to rather tight schedules.

And so, Sai was content to stuff food in the quick way. Granted, that was probably what Tenshi expected of him, so the detail went unnoticed by both. He was, however, polite enough to wipe his hand with the cloth when he was finished with the pretzel (which wasn't all the messy anyway).

"Well, that was pretty uhh... cool stuff," he nodded, placing a couple gold pieces on the table. "I'll pay for the food. I just finished a few delivery quests, and it's surprising what people will pay just to move random stuff... if you're fast anyway." And he was pretty fast! Faster than he was used to on the outside, anyway.

"Lemme know when you're done, and we can start on the gun hunt. If I have to, I can try using a bow for now."

Whatever she thought about his table manners was quickly forgotten as he offered to pay before she could even finish eating. Her eyes widened just a bit as he placed the money on the table, and she looked out the window and took another bite of her fries to divert her attention momentarily. Rather, to divert her face. He was saying something about how making money was easy, but all she could really hear was the voice in her own head freaking out because some admittedly pretty attractive guy was buying her lunch.

At the very least, she supposed she deserved it in a totally platonic way for saving Sai's life earlier, but it was far more exhilarating to live in the fantasy she was aiming for from the start anyways.

She swallowed and wiped off her mouth before replying. "Thanks. I'll catch dinner, then."

She finally got to bite into her burger, and she could only swear that something about being part-tiger made it taste a million times better as her first bite was accompanied by a hum of delight. "Mmm~! Mhm!"

Obviously she swallowed and wiped her mouth again before speaking. She wouldn't not do that at this point. "Yeah, sorry for eating a little slow. I'm just... getting used to all the new sensations still." She chuckled. "I haven't really had the chance to be alone and experiment with it yet, you know?" Halfway through another chuckle, her face began to redden as she really regretted her choice of wording. "Er, what I mean is- I haven't- It'd be... weird! You know? Like, people were staring at me funny when I was trying to see how sensitive my ears were!"

It only got worse.

"I MEAN- I was clapping next to them at different volumes to see how well I could hear certain sounds, a-and-"

She took another bite of cheeseburger, bowing out of the conversation all of a sudden as she became too anxious to risk saying another half of a sentence right now.

Catch dinner… Sai gulped. He’d heard this game was really big on roleplaying, which was part of the draw really, but if he had to eat raw meat like a real animal, he was gonna be out in a heartbeat. Hopefully, she intended to cook it like a civilized huma— err… well… beastkin? Hm.

He waited patiently for her to finish, now watching her movements more intently as he had to food of his own to distract him. It seemed that extra attention was having an effect as well: she quickly melted into a giant landslide of awkwardness.

"Hahaha! Don’t worry about it, I get what you mean," Sai chuckled. "I thought the tail was going to be the weirdest part, but the ears are just as strange. If you angle them just right, the hearing is so sharp, you can hear a pin drop! Although…" Sai smirked, finishing in a whisper so quiet only she could hear, "have you tried scratching them? It’s just as comfy as our pets make it look."

She took the man's mercy and stealing of the spotlight both in tandem to cleanse herself of perpetual cringe as she just enjoyed the food in front of her. She didn't want to keep him waiting all day for her to finish eating, after all. As he whispered, her ears pointed out and forward a bit in reflex as they automatically tried to listen to what he was saying.

His question made her smile, despite her efforts not to, and she whispered back just as quietly. "It's so addicting. I'll never look at animal ears the same way again."

Tenshi looked down at her half-finished food. "Man, I don't think I'll be able to finish this, but it's so good... And I do hate wasting food..." She took another bite of burger, though she had slowed at this point, as she measured her will to finish the meal Sai bought for her against how full she was. While still chewing she put the sandwich back down and pushed the plate away from her a bit.

She swallowed and brought her hand up in front of her mouth as she looked down. "Sorry, I can't do it."

Sai chuckled as his little head-receivers picked up Tenshi’s quiet signal. A shared secret which, as they spent time in this game, they would both someday find was no secret at all, and actually very well-known. To experience it though… that was special, and it was a pleasure only some knew.

"Oh… well, in that case… I’ll maybe just…" He sucked it up like a vacuum. There was something real nice about being able to eat tons of food without getting instantly full, but if he needed this much consistently, the cost of food might be troublesome pretty quick.

"I’m sorry for you! But hey, maybe it’s better you don’t go fighting up close through a bloated stomach or anything. That sounds really unpleasant." Standing up, Sai finally pocketed the cloth form his forehead, figuring it might be kinda rude to hand such a thing back to Tenshi before washing it. "Anyway, that’s two meters filled, and the rest look… uhh… a-okay, so I think we’re good to go, daddio!"

"Let’s keep an eye out for other gun users!" Sai headed for the door.

She watched with bent lips trying not to laugh as Sai devoured half of her own lunch as well. Maybe it was a good thing he paid for it after all.

She got hung up a little bit on standing up by the utterance of an ancient word of power, but eventually shook her head and snapped out of it. "R-Right!" She quickly got up and followed her companion along, out the door to the great outdoors.

Tenshi took a deep breath and crossed her arms as she looked around for a high-level player, when lo and behold she found the perfect target after a while. Perhaps not a user of firearms, but it was a male wearing heavy armor with cool designs on it. She looked to Sai with a grin. "Give me just a moment!" She jogged off down the way to approach the player with more hours. Now was her chance to commit an online gaming sin. Just once wouldn't hurt anything, right?

The tigress approached and put her hands together behind her back as she curled her tail to the right. "Excuse me."

The man looked down at Tenshi with a pretty neutral expression. "Hm? Yeah? What's up?" He began to make a few lazy and practiced hand gestures, obviously looking at his UI.

Meanwhile, Tenshi began to feel a bit too awkward trying to go for the cutesy approach and instead ended up crossing her arms and looking down, and sometimes to the side. Playing to her shy side was a lot easier. "Um, I was wondering- I'm having a lot of trouble finding a firearm for my friend." She couldn't even properly ask for the weapon before the interjection came.

"Five E's, you and your friend both. Hm." The man tilted his head this way and that in thought before actually responding. "So I don't actually remember where to get a gun this early on, but they probably sell them with the magic accessories, since they're magitech."

Tenshi blinked a couple times. Jeez, this guy made the whole endeavor so boring, but he did have a point actually. "That... makes a lot of sense, actually."

"If not, you might have to hike out northwest a bit or find a crafter."

"Second zone and player econ. That's what I was afraid of, haha!"

"Yeah." He tapped a few more buttons on his UI. "Anyways, good luck." And he marched off.

Not only was the interaction disappointing, but he was a perfect mix of average and helpful. How could Tenshi be disappointed at that? It wasn't fair!

She walked back over to Sai with a defeated Sai sigh. "Did you check the magic accessory shop yet?" Her voice was devoid of the eagerness it had before, like a vampire had drained it all out of her.

And so, Sai and Tenshi took to scanning the streets for a good target. There were quite a few players around, but most of them seemed pretty new as well. Not completely fresh like the two beastkin were, but definitely not as totally familiar with the game as the one Tenshi ended up pointing out.

Around the same time, Sai noticed a less impressive looking player: simple leather tunic, ruffled hair, laid-back walk. But the most important thing about him: he proudly displayed a fancy magitech pistol on his belt.

"Hey, think we should—" he cut the question off as Tenshi gave him a wide grin, having set her sights on the flashiest target. She sure seemed excited, so he didn’t really wanna interrupt her opportunity to… flirt? Huh. Maybe she was ugly in the real world or something… didn’t get the chance much? Sai always felt bad for ugly people.

He continued to watch from a distance as the guy with the gun slowly sauntered closer, pausing to browse a fruit stand nearby. It was kinda awkward being so close, so Sai figured he should say something. "Hi. Hey, uhh… that fancy pistol gun‘s kinda neat."

The gunner glanced up from the apple he was about to buy, dropping it and flashing a toothy grin. "Hehey! A man of fine taste! Yeah, I just picked up this bad boy from Lost Arcadia… that-a-way. Pretty cool, yeah? Check it out~"

Finger on the trigger, he twirled the thing like a baton then whipped it toward the sky, firing a blue energy blast at the poor, unsuspecting sun.

"Woah! That‘s definitely pretty cool!" Sai grinned, suddenly feeling a lot better about his mastery choices. "I’ve been trying to find a gun of my own, but the smith looks like he only does traditional weapons."

"Whaaat, no kiddin’? Another gunner, huh? That’s awesome!" Sai suddenly felt an arm around his shoulder, and lips to his ear. "The ways of a gunner are sacred and true. Do you swear to uphold the great responsibility that comes with wielding the mighty boomstick~?"

"Uhm... yeah, definitely! … Yes?" An awkward moment went by as the strange gunner stared Sai in the eyes before chuckling and letting him go.

"Hahahaa, so awkward, I just wanted to see you squirm a bit. Don’t sweat it, bro. Just take my old one. It’s not great, but it’ll do the job ’til ya find a cooler one." Summoning a more basic pistol, the man thrust it in Sai’s hand, and offered a high-five with the other one. "See ya around, bro! Duel me later when ya git gud."

Just as he was leaving, Tenshi returned with some advice, and Sai flashed an excited grin her way, holding up the magitech pistol. "Mmm no, I haven’t had the chance yet. But look! A fellow bro just handed me a spare! He was a such a chill guy too; I’d love to take a page from— hey, why do you look so down? Why that guy rude or something?"

The tigress's tail seemed to curl down sharply about a quarter up the tail from the tip, and she crossed her arms. "No, just... sad I couldn't be more of a help." She lied straight to his face. All in all, it wasn't the sort of thing she had on her bucket list or anything, but it was still disappointing for some reason that things didn't go according to the usual tale. Perhaps she wasn't actually pretty, and such a thought brought Tenshi some much needed humility. After all, it was a bit difficult not to over-indulge on the dream literally at her fingertips right now, but she was a fairly disciplined sort.

She looked the gun over, and her mood slowly shifted back from negative to at least neutral. That is to say, her ears stopped drooping, her eyes were actually open all the way, and that bend in her tail had disappeared.

"But I'm glad you got a weapon so easily. At least now we can get in a bit of combat." She tilted her head to the left and glanced up, then stood and put her left fist on her hip with the other in front of her chin. "Speaking of which..." She didn't really notice herself at first, but this wasn't a usual thinking pose for her outside of the game.

"... Huh? Wait-" The revelation eventually came that she might have developed a new habit already, which made her forget what she was thinking about for a few seconds.

"Er... Anyways, I-" She scratched the back of her head and looked off to the side, feeling like an awkward mess again. She was supposed to be on top of the world right now! What happened to all that?

She cleared her throat. "I need to test my own weapons out before we actually fight something though." She gave Sai a momentary glance. "So, you wanna go back out towards the start? I think there's supposed to be enemies out that way."

Sai's head and hand were about to repeat Tenshi's exact same gesture, but he caught himself in time and went with a simple, inquisitive droop of his ears instead. Tenshi was acting... weird. Granted, Tenshi had been a bit awkward from the beginning, so it wasn't super out of character, but this was an especially flustered look for her. Even so, he struggled to understand what the cause was.

When she finally got around to getting the words out, Sai pointed his fingers forward and winked, "Yeah bro!" That other guy was an excellent inspiration! To be honest, Sai almost wanted to follow him around with a pair of binoculars and a notepad, but that would be... obviously creepy, and also a pretty major distraction from their plans.

"Let's get a move on, yeah~?" Oh, he was feelin' it gooood! Some day, he would have to find that guy again, and thank him for bestowing his powerful dudebro chill upon him.

Trying to emulate the move the other guy had made earlier, Sai put his pointer finger in the trigger... hole... thing, and awkwardly spun the gun around it a few times, whipping it forward and firing... straight down. It struck the ground by his boot, causing him to recoil with a quick "EEP!"

Cough...

"Yeah... I uhh... whooooeeeeeep, bro! These things are powerful! Yeah; I love it." He returned to holding the gun more normally. Time to deflect... "Are you okay, by the way? You seemed kinda out of it back there?"

She scratched behind her ear nervously. "Yeah! I'm totally fi-iiiiiiiiii-" She trailed off as she closed her eyes and scratched behind her ear for a few seconds. Finally she snapped out of it and swatted at the air in frustration. "Gaahhh!! Why is my own body trolling meeeeeeee?!" As people stared on at her abject irritation and the scene it had caused, she turned on a heel and started marching off back towards the entrance to town. "Let's just go kill something already!"

She was pacing away from Sai quickly, trying harder than she ever had before to hide her embarrassment. She couldn't help that everything felt so different. Even the way her emotions gave her chills or made her face hot, or even stung at her eyes all of a sudden was so different from anything she had ever experienced before. Was she okay? Was there something about Terrasphere's neural interface she didn't understand? Was she sick?

And why was she trying so hard to stay ahead of Sai? She asked him to party up for this, and now she was storming forth not even looking at him. She couldn't help it, though! Like, how could he have such an easy time adjusting to everything here? Sure, she might have had an extra step in terms of gender, but the both of them were newly created beastfolk characters. Furthermore, why did she even care that he was handling it better?

She couldn't place it, no matter how much she rattled it around violently in the confines of her brain as the duo headed towards their first fight.

Sai leapt back several feet as Tenshi practically roared, much like the lioness she represented. It was so crazy and loud and out of nowhere! 'Her own body trolling her?' What did that even mean!? Did female beastkin need regular head scratches or something? If all those anime tropes were anything to go by, that was a very real possibility. He certainly didn't feel the pressing need, though... not that he'd be opposed to it, either.

"Wow, I'm really glad I didn't go with a girl..." Sai whispered extra quietly, not wanting to chance it with those pointy ears. He knew full well the challenges normal human ladies faced, but if beastkin added more on top of that, then sheesh, no thanks!

Sai picked up the pace, finding it difficult to keep up, despite having a few inches on his new friend. She was tearing forward through the street ferociously, almost making him feel sorry for any animal that would be so unlucky to get in her sight. "H-hey, wait up!" Sai called after her, breaking into a run until he was there again.

"Is there something weird going on I should know about? We're both kinda getting used to these new sensations, right?" He wiggled his ears a couple of times to illustrate exactly what he meant. "Maybe later we could find someone who's been a beastkin for a while to give us some tips?"

She inhaled sharply, then held her breath as she struggled to think of a reply. She didn't stop marching forward, but after a while of just not saying anything, she slowed down just a bit so that Sai looked less like he was going to trip over his own shoelaces. He probably didn't, but that's all she could think based on her peripheral vision catching his movements. Plus he was kind of awkward, not that she had any room to talk anymore.

"I don't want tips, alright? I just want-" As the two finally left town, she looked down and rested her hands at the sides of her hips with her thumbs hanging through the belt loops on her admittedly pocket-less shorts. Still kept fast-walking, though. "I'm just going through... a lot. In and out of game." The tigress sighed, slowing her pace to just a bit faster than a regular walking speed. "I just wanted to log on and focus on playing my shiny new RPG game while trying to make friends, but all I've been doing is making an ass out of myself at every turn, and it's... Well, you know." She turned her head away from Sai, pretending to look around the environment for a combat practice target.

"Oh, I see…" Sai nodded slowly, understanding at least in principle what having a lot on one’s plate felt like. She kept going with the explanation, and Sai was suddenly overcome with an overwhelming urge to…

"Oh, come here, you~" Hug her. Thus was, of course, very typical behavior for him in the real world. Angel had quite a lot of friends (though it was always questionable whether they were friends or just moochers), and her default for consoling them was typically to offer a soft hug. However, as his body wrapped around the smaller frame, his eyes snapped open like he’d seen a ghost and he frowned.

Luckily, this sudden reaction was covered by Tenshi’s shoulder. However, it made it pretty darn obvious that he was a guy hugging a girl, and a pretty attractive one at that. It felt weird. Then again, for her, maybe it would just seem like a friendly gesture! Yeah. Chill, Sai! Chill! Play it cool and casual!

He broke off after a (very) short time, scratching the back of his head. "Just… you know, that’s not how I see you at all. You didn’t give me that impression anyway. So… yeah…! Anyway, shiny RPG, let’s go shoot something!"

As Sai pulled Tenshi into the hug, she blinked a few times in confusion as her expression didn't really change from before until a few seconds had passed. Usually, hugs felt weird. Past her childhood, hugs were a scarce thing, and since guys don't really hug other guys she was just straight up not used to them at all.

This hug was different. It was warm. Warm enough to envelope the cold blood of her entire body in only a few seconds. Nostalgic somehow as well. She closed her eyes to try and search for that pleasant memory in the confines of her head, but her chance was taken from her as the wolf released her. Oh well...

She looked up at him and tried to let the calm that the warmth had caused her to persist even as it all too quickly cooled away in the light breeze rolling through. Her face was a bit red, but she tried to just ignore it as she bit at the corner of her lower lip thoughtfully for a few moments and glanced down and to the left a bit.

"You're too nice, but... Thank you... Sai." She nodded almost like she was giving him a quick bow as she took a step back from the wolf boy, then held her hands up for her own eyes to scan over with seeming interest. "I suppose it's a good thing we stopped, anyways." She tried to get straight back to the game itself as Sai encouraged. She just needed to remember that she was here to play a game and worry about all that other stuff later.

"I need to test out my weapons, after all." She curled a couple of her fingers, then unfurled them again, as her left hand brought up the UI and began to flip through it. She spent the better part of a minute reading instructions and made sure Auto-Assist was on so she could be sure that she didn't mess anything up. After all, just the thought of this sort of thing and how it could feel in just a moment made the tigress a little bit squeamish.

At long last, the time came to reveal her weapons. "O...kay... Here goes nothing!" She flexed her fingers, and hand, then wrist and arm. The Auto-Assist took over, and in a couple waves, her hand morphed quite quickly into what seemed like a more what would be a tiger's hand with sharp claws.

"Waa~! Hah, this..." She slowly began to wriggle her fingers. "This feels so weird, ahahaha!" She looked at Sai to gauge his reaction, unsure if this was the world's best build idea. She would have asked what he thought, but she was somehow expecting him to be open about it from the get-go.

Sai was quite happy to hear Tenshi hadn't taken the hug the wrong way. Really, he was just being paranoid. Most likely. It seemed she'd taken it exactly as he'd hoped: which was just a simple gesture of friendship. "You're welcome, my gal," Sai nodded. "Anyway... Auto-Assist..."

As Tenshi spent some time in her menu reading through things, Sai took the time to do the same, figuring it would be better to do it now than in the middle of combat. "Uhm..." Unfortunately, he didn't actually play too many video games before, and navigating the menus was... new. Particularly VR games.

If not for his ability to watch Tenshi's gesture, he might've also forgotten how to open the palm menu. He'd just managed to find the auto-assist button she was talking about when suddenly the tiger claw appeared in his peripheral vision, causing Sai to jump. "Waa~!" Sai shrieked in unison, quickly trying to save it... "Woah, what!? So that's what you meant..."

Scratching his head, he imagined tearing something apart with a giant claw like that and shuddered. Absolutely, positively, no possible chance in this one or the next was he going to be doing anything so disgusting! Then again, "Different strokes for different folks," wasn't it? This girl must've had a lot of frustrations to let out if she wanted to fight like that!

"I can imagine..." he nodded, scratching the back of his head. After a few moments, he hesitantly stepped forward and poked the tiger hand a few times. "How does it feel? Is it tougher? It must be, right? Otherwise, what would the point be?"

As he poked at her hand, she watched intently with an excited grin and wriggled her fingers again. "It just feels weird! Like, it's a little thicker, it feels like, but it's still... Like, soft enough to feel with?" The slightly-more-tigress-than-before chuckled. "Looks like I'm gonna have a lot to get used to."

Tenshi looked over her shoulder off to the wilderness. "I wonder if our noses are more sensitive, now that I think about it. You think we could track animals to grind on?" She closed her eyes and sniffed at the air for a moment, then looked to Sai again finally as she carefully placed her new claw on her hip. "Actually, I'm pretty sure I'll be really good at that once I level up Beast Arts a little bit." She laughed at a sudden realization. "We're kind of like a hunter and his hound. You stand back with the gun, and I jump into the bushes and chase the ducks out, haha!"

"Hmm…" Sai grinned, petting the soft fur of the strange paw for a moment before stepping back to give Tenshi some space. "Personally, I’ve had enough new body parts to deal with, without adding transmogrification to the mix," he insisted, shaking his head firmly. "But hey! I think it suits your style. Rawr~ …and such."

As the topic of smell came up, Sai couldn’t help but take a deep breath. The simple answer was, "Uhm… no." No hesitation. "At least not me. The hearing is way more sharp, but if I can smell any better, it’s just barely. Not that I can recognize, anyway. Plus! I don’t even know what animals smell like… besides wet dog, which is awful!"

Sai tilted his head. "Hunter and hound… huh… but I’m the canine, right? That’s kind of ironic. Fun comparison though, my gal~! We’ll go with it!" Flashing a grin and another cheesy thumbs up, Sai continued, "I’m sure something will show up soon enough. Aren’t monsters everywhere in games like this?"

Tenshi did her best not to showcase her nervousness as the wolf petted her hand, though she couldn't help but to smile at how strangely cute it was. Like a cute cat video except in real life, except not actually in real life but close enough and also you're the cat. As well, she couldn't help but to laugh as he labeled her style as being "Rawr~", whatever that meant. It definitely sounded like a good thing, but her personality wasn't that spicy, was it?

The tigress gave an understanding nod. Wet dog did smell terrible, whether shampoo was applied or not. "Yeah, though I think my sense of taste is a little different. Then again it just might be the food..." She looked down at her hand again. "And... my sense of feeling might be a bit less dull? I mean, if the ears and tail are anything to go by."

"Haha, yeah, ironic!" And there he was saying 'my gal' again. She nibbled at her lower lip for a moment as she took in the squeal-worthy giddiness that welled up inside of her every time this or something in the same vein happened.

"Yeah, we should just kind of explore and let a monster find us, probably." She took a deep breath, then started walking again. Her hand transformed back into a regular human hand, prompting her to shake it out. "Waaah, that feels so weeeird!" She looked back over to her partner in crime. "Word to the wise: don't take Metamorph and play with Pain Receptors on."

Sai did notice the strange reaction to his chill-speak. Was it that charismatic? Huh. Then again, he’d made a pretty darn hot avatar, at least according to his own his player’s standards, so who knows: maybe he could spout just about anything and get that kinda reaction. He’d probably be reacting that way too if it was the other way around.

… Boy, hopefully they’d never consider a real-life meet up. Angel had never broken a girl’s heart before, and she didn’t exactly want to experience that.

"Nnnnoted," Sai nodded. No biggie: he was already set on Hypersense anyway, which seemed to have locked Metamorph out, so that wasn’t even an option. "Who knows, maybe you’ll get used to it and find it weird not being able to transform into part-tigress when you’re on the outside? Although, it might not be healthy to play that much… I couldn’t even if I wanted to. My schedule is really busy…"

He continued searching for a target as he spoke. Off to the side, there were a pair of bear tracks leading off into the woods… which Sai completely missed, as he had no outdoor survival skills whatsoever.

"Yeah, I've been doing overtime every week because we can't keep people, so I feel you there. It looks like we have similar work schedules though! Or is today your day off?" Tenshi of course spoke of the working class woes, unaware of what kind of schedule Sai actually followed.

As she looked down to mull over how the day has been and how her work schedule would line up with playing, she spotted those tracks about as soon as they came into her peripheral view. Her vision must be better now, too. "Hey, look!" She nudged the man next to her with a bit of enthusiasm. "The animals leave actual tracks to follow like MH: World, except... like, actual tracks!" She was grinning as she spoke in a loud whisper for all intents and purposes. After all, she was suddenly in 'hunt mode'. She didn't want to scare off whatever might be nearby. "This game is so cool, ahaha..."

With a quick breath to dismiss her pent up excitement, she started following the tracks with normal steps that she took as quietly as possible, rolling her feet from heel to toe to remove the loud impact of stepping. This was so thrilling! It wasn't like it was anything extraordinary, but the realism was so sensational. She began to think if only for a moment that people could just live here.
