"Awwww, but I wanted to win a donut!"

Gumi pouted, but made her way into line with Harvest anyway. Her tail lashed the whole way, but she perked up immediately once a proper, non-squished donut was in her hands.

Ash nodded towards Lúthien, as he rejoined her near the donut line. It was only after the last kid left had their treat that he pulled the two drinks he'd picked up for the both of them.

"I couldn't remember your order, so I ended up getting some fruit tea. Strawberry okay with you?."

He sipped his own drink, still keeping an eye on Finn. There was definitely something about him, and it felt like it was watching back. The stalemate was starting to make him anxious. "...so, what's his story, anyway? I know there aren't many happy stories in an orphanage, but this seems a little extreme.

Ash hesitated, then continued. "...I'm worried its something worse than a ghost."

Gumi’s protests were expected, but even those couldn’t prevail once a sugary treat of her own choosing was in the vixen’s tiny hands. Silence, or what passed for that here at least, reigned for a while as tiny mouths were busy with the donuts Vargold had brought.

"You could pick any drink in Dough Re Mi and not be wrong." While the elf herself wasn’t known for being picky she still had preferences, so a compliment like that spoke volumes of the attention and care that particular establishment invested into all of its products. "Besides, almost everyone likes strawberries, right~?"

The box of donuts was gently nudged in his direction, two regularly glazed ones being all that was left inside, before the elf accepted her drink and picked one to munch on. She watched the children as they ate, fiery curls bouncing in excitement—and always shadowed by the larger felis girl—as Peppy and Milah sat beside a quiet Finn.

"We first came across his village while updating the League’s maps of High March, right as a nasty storm was about to hit." Ash wasn’t wrong in his guess, none of the kids here had happy backstories they could look back to—and that’s if they could remember them in the first place. "The inhabitants of Aurora weren’t exactly warm to outsiders, but he led Yu and me back to his little home and gave us shelter."

Despite the time that had elapsed since that memory still felt fresh inside her mind. "He was a scrawny little thing back then, his hair matted and unkempt… we learned that his mom had passed away a long time ago, and his father was often gone doing who knows what kind of jobs as he tried to make ends meet." The Finn in those memories was a far cry from the little boy now quietly enjoying his donut while the redheaded faerin happily talked his ear off.

"He was so small and skinny, Ash. I wanted to stay longer, make sure his dad came back and help them out however we could…" The little pup had stolen her heart when they’d found him curled up between them the morning after. "But the villagers, well… let’s just say they were a very superstitious lot, and us staying longer would’ve put him in danger."

Unsurprisingly she’d been unable to get little Finn out of her mind, neither of them could really, and they had finally returned to the remote village weeks later. "Everyone was gone." The echoes of a panic that flooded her then lingered as she recounted the tale, and she had feared the outcome that might've befallen the caenis child.

"The place was like a ghost town by the time we returned, and we rushed to his home expecting the worse..." They'd found the little bundle of skin and bones curled up on that same bed, barely clinging to life still and breathing. "We brought him back to Finweald and, once he got better, Beleg helped pull some favors to get him a spot here in the Cubs Den."

After all, @Yugam and Lúthien couldn’t look over a young pup 24/7 in TerraSphere, and the Embertorch wasn't exactly a place to raise young children—plus this way Finn would also have peers of his own age he could play and grow up with. "We became his sponsors."

Ash took the offered donut and proceeded to devour it a little too quickly. The drink went more slowly as Ash listened to Lúthien's tale, his face going dark at the mention of High Reach. Lately it seemed like everything went back to there.

"Sounds about right for a High Reach village... with so much Dissonance out there, you have to be suspicious. He could clearly imagine what the village might have looked like, ramshackle and all but abandoned to the wind and the dust.

(A little too clearly, in fact. What the hell...?)

"You know, if it were a traditional story, I'd be suspicious of the one survivor. But that's not really your style, huh?" Ash smiled alongside the lighthearted ribbing, but it didn't last too long as he turned his gaze back towards Finn. "Going by ghost rules, I'd guess 'parent with unfinished business', but..."

But the mental image of that child, withering and alone and far too vivid in his mind to be from Lúthien's storytelling alone, told a different kind of story. "...was there anything... off about him when you met him?"

A faint chuckle escaped between sips through her straw, the light bounce of her shoulders something Ash was probably accustomed to seeing whenever the blonde didn’t have a proper excuse available. "You’re probably right… but how could I be suspicious of a lil’cutie patootie like Finn~?" Thankfully the children were too busy loudly chatting among themselves about their new sugary treats to be paying close attention to whatever boring convos the adults were having.

"Yeah, I thought something similar… we never met his dada face to face, but he was still around technically when we first found him." She’d try asking Finn once or twice about it, but the pup had always been silent or simply shook his head. "Don’t think he’s lying about not knowing what happened… though I’m sure his own guess isn’t far from Yu’s and mine."

It hurt to know the little caenis had already experienced so much in this life, and perhaps that’s why Lúthien had found it so hard to forget Finn since their first meeting—birds of a feather and whatnot.

"I’m sure you’ve noticed, but he doesn’t exactly act his age." At first she had simply assumed it was a survival response from the little caenis given his upbringing, though that still didn’t fully explain some of the things that seemed to happen around him… or the experience that night in his village.

"That night we—Yugam and I—stayed at his place? We had an odd dream of sorts." She began before the words halted, brows furrowed together as Lúthien tried to find the right words. "Eventually I figured it was just that elven dreamwalking fuckery manifesting, but…"

Her gaze finally left the children to look at the taller caenis by her side, her face serious as her voice quietly echoed within his mind. { It was eerily similar to that time...}

"An odd dream..." The tea was gone too fast, leaving Ash with nothing to occupy his hands or his thoughts. He briefly gnawed at the edge of the cup before sending it back to his inventory to be dealt with Later. "High Reach seems lousy with them."

The fact Lúthien had experienced it alone was both a relief and a worry. A relief because it meant he wasn't uniquely haunted. A worry because it meant that something was out there stalking through dreams, and they'd potentially brought said stalker back here.

He looked at Finn. Really looked at him. And finally, something clicked about why the small, white-haired caenis looked so familiar.

"...did he ever say anything about having a brother?"

One game had ended. It wasn't entirely satisfying, but not all games could be won. Besides, there were other games to play, and this game had been long in the making.

”And so the next game begins...”

The voice in Finn's ear nearly had an emotion in it. Interest, or perhaps excitement

”Soon, the Keeper will approach, at behest of the Dreamer. This one wishes to speak to both of them.”

”Show him the gift, and then lead them both to your lair. This one will be waiting there.”

A whisper of wind, and the sound of fading footsteps traced their way towards the backrooms of the orphanage, leaving Finn alone..

A pair of bright amber eyes had kept vigil over the two adults—specifically the cups in their hands—though the little faerin had been a smidge too slow with her move. A gasp had escaped her as she watched the drink in Vargold’s hands disappear, quickly replaced by a pout as Peppy rushed over.

"Miss Luuuthy…!"

"Alright, alright… no need for those Sad Sam eyes, Peppy." A quiet chuckle accompanied her words as the elf finished her own drink, a slight shake of the container rattling the ice cubes left inside and making the faerin’s eyes sparkle in excitement.

The lid and straw were removed and discarded to the confines of her own UI inventory before she handed the cup over to Peppy, the young girl quickly making her way back to the others with her “won” prize. "I swear that one’s addicted to ice cubes now." Sure enough Peppy was already crunching away, happy as could be as she found her seat besides Finn once more.

"A brother…?" With the tiny redheaded distraction gone they could return to their conversation, the blonde frowning slightly as she thought long and hard… before she finally shook her head. "No, not that I can remember at least. The few times he’s mentioned family it’s always been his dad."

His mother had come up once or twice too, but from what Lúthien had been able to piece together they were things Finn’s father had talked about in the past—Finn had apparently been too young when she had passed, and the little caenis barely remembered her as a result.

Peppy was blissfully unaware as Finn’s ears perked up just slightly, too busy munching and crunching on ice cubes to notice or care, though the subtle shift hadn’t gone unnoticed by the older felis. Milah said nothing however as she quietly watched the boy, his blue eyes focused on something that made no sense for the girl when she tried to follow his gaze.

". . ."

Silence reigned, though the acknowledgement finally arrived in the form of a small nod before Finn busied himself on licking the remaining sugary glaze from his fingers.

Ash couldn't help but flinch and bristle when Peppy rushed him. Thankfully, the child was quickly dismissed with a cup of ice cubes.

"...phew. You know, chewing ice is bad for your teeth." Ash's fur remained on end as he traced Peppy's path towards Finn. He was quick to snap his attention back to Lúthien, though he kept an ear pointed his direction.

"It's just... that incident back in High Reach wasn't the first time that kind of thing happened to me." He picked nervously at his pants leg as he said that, gaze sliding off into the middle distance. "Less of a dream, but the same kind of... topic."

He lowered his voice somewhat, though if the boy's hearing was anything like his, he probably could hear him nonetheless. But it was going to come up either way.

"And before that all happened, there was... a kid. A white caenis, just like Finn."

"By the time everything was... 'done', the kid had vanished on us. I can't help but think it's related."

"Maybe…" She smiled softly, Vargold’s quiet concern over the little one winning over the clear unease he felt around them. "Though, if the game lore is to be believed, that’s probably the least offensive thing faerins have munched on."

Delicate eyebrows furrowed as Ash shared his own experiences, the gears slowly ticking as Lúthien wondered how many others might’ve stumbled upon the unexplainable phenomenon. "I guess it shouldn’t be surprising considering how remote that place is… and that canyon won’t be doing anyone favors, either." Their voices had lowered to quiet whispers now and, if the young caenis pup could hear them, Finn gave no signs of listening.

"M-Maybe it was something else…?" She fought against the silent cold that slowly crawled up her spine, reminded of the shadowed figure that had lingered over Vargold’s shoulder at the time. "Another player p-perhaps?"

The skeptical tones gave up how little she believed in her own words. Strange things always seemed to happen in the orphanage around Finn, and the quiet feeling of being watched by someone else had become increasingly harder to ignore as of late.

"Ah yes, the Lore." Ash grimaced as those fragments came back to him. The fact that would apply to the ice-crunching child in the room with them unpleasant. "...hopefully this place has a way to manage that."

But not as unpleasant as the subject of the entity that little Finn reminded him of. "Too young to be a player. The devs have at least one standard." Ash shook his head, ears still folded back by concern. "But the thing that keeps coming to mind..."

He looked towards Finn, whose eyes were fixed on... something. And it seemed that another one of the children was watching him too. Perhaps she was keen enough to notice something off about the boy?

"...they had the same eyes. I've seen a lot of odd colors, but nothing with that same mix. I don't think that's a coincidence."
