Kamala almost vomited at the sight of the bone mounds that they passed by, knowing at the back of her head that some of them could've been human. That's what cults do, isn't it? She managed to steel herself, however, rein all that vomit in, and continue on without any accident. As they ascended the stairs to the upper levels, she couldn't help but refocus on a curious bit of revelation she had witnessed earlier, so she asked @Chrys under her breath.

"Chrystopheles Stonecastle? That's your full name? Isn't that a bit...on the nose?"

Her mild disappointment didn't end there. When the armored adventurer started gawking at the two wooden chests that greeted them upon their ascent, Kamala couldn't help but heave a sigh, scratching her forehead with concern. She was already well-versed in Chrys' greed, but the sight of him delighting in his find, not unlike a vulture gorging on the remains of humans and animals alike, was not inspiring. In fact, it was the exact opposite.

"You know those valuables might have been looted from the prisoners we just rescued, right?"

She expressed her disbelief under her breath, like a whisper in the wind, though she wasn't quite sure Chrys would hear or even care. Some men just want to own everything, even things they shouldn't, things they don't deserve. Annoyed, she left him be and crawled quietly to the north, where she found a secret door! What she couldn't find, however, was a way to open said secret door. Despite her hardest and best effort, Kamala could not find the section of the sliding wall that would open the door and reveal the passage it was hiding behind it. Fortunately for her, she had a human battering ram with her. A battering human?

"Chrys! Over here! There's a secret door, but I can't find a way to open it. Didn't you say keys aren't needed when you're around?"

She tried to play to the man's ego with a playful smirk, whispering to his ears a sweet challenge, an opportunity to show off. If she had learned anything from Chrys, it was that he loved to play the big strong boi stereotype. He was probably going to just kick the damned thing open with all that unnecessary brute strength. Would it be effective? Of course! Would it alert whoever was on the other side of the door? Of course! Did they have another option? नहीं.

Chrys smirked when @Kamala Graham asked him about his name. It was stupid, yes, but as evident by their conversation, it was getting traction. That's all that Chrys ever wanted, ever since he fucked up and forgot to give himself a last name. Or a better gamer name. Everything's going according to plan!

"Well, to be fair, I'm still working on it. How does Chrystopheles Hardcastle sound?"

Chrys stopped when Kamala pointed out the possible nature of the loot he was pocketing. Then he shrugged and continued pocketing them. Once his pockets were stuff, he rose to his feet and went to her with a smile. Sounds like a job for Chrystopheles Hardcastle! Cue theme music!

"Don't worry, I got this."

Chrys warmed himself up by cracking his knuckles and, in a way, his neck. Then he breathed in deeply before kicking the damned door wide open. His kick had so much force, it sent the door flying...straight into Lord Faerl and his goons, well, near them at least. Chrys squinted at the foursome that squinted back at him. They seemed to be in the middle of something, as evident by the bloodstained knife in the pompous asshole's hand. The two adult human corpses on the altar in front of a huge, purple stone statue of a monstrous, otherworldly creature with a large, bulbous head, long arms, tentacles for legs, and multifaceted eyes glowing with aquamarine light...didn't help.

"Ah... Are we interrupting something? Is this an orgy?"

While Lord Faerl seemed too busy mumbling in some sort of weird-ass language, the three cultists that were standing beside him broke off from the weird ritual to approach the adventurers, drawn weapons in hand. Chrys smirked, knowing he could take all on without much effort...until three cult fanatics that were apparently lurking behind the statue joined the fray. One of them even addressed the pair, "You fools! You're interrupting the Burnt Tongue Cult! The Master Gaernoo shall have your head!"

Chrys heaved a sigh, turning to Kamala right behind him.

"Definitely not an orgy then."

Chrys held out his hand, manifesting his Thousand Sparkling Gold through his Auric Geomancy, and commanded the very power of earth to create a Stone Stele that burst from the ground in front of two cultists, taking them out. Upon that impact, the Stone Stele immediately crumbled and all that remained of it swirled around Kamala, boosting her defense with a transparent shield of golden light.

❰ Thousand Sparkling Gold: Power over the Stone ❱

❰ War Pose ❱

Pieces of rocks and stones were also hurled at the nearby cultists due to the shifting earth, but most of them were able to dodge and block them, much to the geomancer's dismay. Huh. These ones are smarter... That or the remnants of his attack were just weaker than he expected. After all, he meant to protect his companion. The secondary wave of pummeling earth was just an afterthought.

❰ Heart of the Mountains ❱

"YOU'LL PAY FOR THAT, YOU MASSIVE MORON!" The remaining cult members were none too pleased with Chrys taking out two of them right out of the gate. They'll learn soon enough how much of a walking disaster this armored adventurer truly is. If he survives the coming fire, that is. Burn, baby, burn!

Kamala didn't think it was possible, but @Chrys managed to outdo himself with an alternative name that was just, if not more, awkward than the first one. Chrystopheles sounded like a demon's name, which seemed to work against his hero-for-hire gimmick, and both Stonecastle and Hardcastle just sounded weird. If Kamala didn't know any better, and she didn't, the two last names seemed like they were innuendos or something. Still, she tried her best to sound supportive to her friend. That's what friends are for.

"It sounds... I mean, if you like it, then that's all that matters, right?"

Her eyes grew wide when a bunch of cultists, including Lord Faerl, waited for them in the room that Chrys had kicked the secret door into. She audibly groaned when the massive adventurer made his quips, not really comfortable with that kind of humor, but she had no time to dwell on that tiny concern. Catching a glimpse of the statue and the corpses as the cultists tried to intimidate them, Kamala was filled with negative feelings. A lot of them. Those poor innocent people...

Guarded and protected by Chrys, Kamala was left untouched by the cult fanatic's fiery spell. In return, she frowned as she manifested an illusory field of protection around Chrys that first struck the same cult fanatic as a gracefully swirling beam of white and green, which was accompanied by illusory flora. The blast knocked the murderer out, sending them hurtling backward while they screamed in futility until they lost inevitably consciousness. The illusory field itself was based on the "Garden of Gwyndolainn" and should prevent enemies from getting too close to Chrys, boosting his defense as well as replenishing his health for a bit with Kamala's infused regenerative healing.

❰ Field of Fetters ❱

❰ Gift of Nature ❱

❰ Present Manifested ❱

❰ Jade Moonlight ❱

With a scowl, the elf addressed the cultists, anger in her eyes. If she wasn't kind, she would've hurled expletives at them or even just taken them all out with the option of surrendering. Alas, Kamala was neither Chrys nor Ayna Nietzsche. She wasn't as strong or as potent as them on the battlefield. She was a healer, and healers should always consider the humanity hidden deep beneath these monsters.

"Y-You... Monsters! You hurt the innocent people of this town! You should be in jail! Yield, or suffer your own karma!"

Kamala readied her palms in an offensive stance to try and make the cultists see reason, even though deep down, she knew people like them would have long abandoned the practicality of reason, of truth, of logic. These people have already sold their souls to the devil and its ilk. They were long gone. Still, she had to try to compromise, and bring out a peaceful resolution, though she was more than prepared to pursue violence if it meant that future townsfolk wouldn't have to suffer their evil.

Chrys gave @Kamala Graham a thumbs up after receiving her healing. Unfortunately for them, even though they had diminished the cultists' numbers for a bit, another one joined the fray, and the fanatics started chanting ominously. Fortunately for Chrys, he was able to dodge out of the way of their summoned fire. Whoa! What the fuck was that?!

Almost instinctively, Chrys punched the ground before him, sending jagged pieces of rock hurtling at the cultists. The earthen projectiles took out both remaining cultists as well as one of the fanatics. Talking about hitting three birds with one stone, right? Well, three birds with three stones after one ground punch at least. Speaking of least, the armored adventurer then took a moment to turn to his companion, wondering if she was all right. That flame spell was completely unexpected. It was definitely something new to him.

"Kamala, you all right?"

As he waited for her response, he manifested his Thousand Sparkling Gold through his Auric Geomancy to shield his friend. It may have been already too late this time, but the battle was far from over. At least that was what he thought. From the corner of his eye, however, he caught a glimpse of the dastardly Lord Faerl retrieving what appeared like a scroll from within his robe. "The Master gifted us with great insight. The knowledge from beyond the veil has opened our eyes. We are superior. Those lesser than us do not deserve our attention."

His stupid fucking robe then started to glow in a myriad of scintillating colors...and then he was gone, leaving only a single fanatic still chanting something unintelligible as the bodies on the altar in front of the gross statue were consumed by aquamarine fire and reduced to bone and ash. What. The actual. Fuck.

At the same time @Chrys jumped out of the way of the Sacred Flame spell, Kamala also threw herself to safety, barely dodging the fiery hot magical fire summoned by the misguided cultists. Her fall was hard, and the thud that followed was loud and ugly. Kamala winced in pain from the impact, but she knew the worst wasn't over. Perhaps it was just beginning.

"I'm fine, Chrys. Thank you for saving me."

Kamala felt very fortunate that Chrys had cushioned her fall and kept the flames from licking her toes with his earthen shield. She felt the exact opposite when she saw Lord Faerl teleport to safety and even worse when the remaining cultist burned the innocents' remains at the altar. The elf immediately rose to her feet and screamed her protest at the desecration before taking out her magic lamp and blasting the surprised cultist unconscious with concentrated nature magic that took the form of a seed that exploded upon impact.

"NO!!! What have you done?!"

Kamala dragged herself toward the altar but dropped to her knees, sobbing, when she realized it was all too late. Perhaps they had never even been on time. Those corpses, those bodies, those innocent people have already been dead, long gone, way before they even heard of this devilish business. Kamala wept on the ground, mourning the unfair losses and cursing the disappeared mastermind. One day, Faerl, I will find you...and you will receive these souls' vengeance!

Upper Level, Lord Varus' Strange Tower → The Swelling Pot, Providence

With the battle surprisingly over, Chrys rushed to @Kamala Graham's side and held her, keeping her companion a much-needed shoulder to cry on. He waited for something horrible to rise from those ashes, to get down from the altar, but nothing ever did. All that followed was a dreary silence that blanketed the travesties committed in that dark corner of the earth. This was now a tomb, abandoned by its creator, haunted by the victims of the vile rituals that once called this crypt home. Chrys quietly and patiently waited for Kamala to let it all out, though in his mind, he was cursing Lord Faerl for masterminding such an evil plot.

The next few days weren't easy. Chrys took it upon himself to care for Kamala, and once she was somewhat all right, they both had the heavy task of informing the townsfolk about the cult that had been operating under their noses, which understandably shocked them. Even neighboring communities soon heard about the rituals, ominous words traveling fast. Yet the townsfolk, well, some of them, helped Chrys clear out the site, even going as far as making what restitution they could to Faerl's victims. In the end, with their permission, Chrys used his masterful control of the earth to collapse the tower and seal off the entrance to the underground temple.

"That should send a message to Faerl, wherever the fuck that monster is."

With the tower and the temple gone, Faerl should lose the fruits of all his demented labor. In the back of his head, though, Chrys knew that that wouldn't weaken his connection to whatever imagined dark deity he worshipped. Most religious zealots were too faithful in their beliefs that a physical place would not be where they'd bury their dark desires. Such evil always finds a way to survive.

Upon Chrys' return to the Fargos' Swelling Pot, the tavern where he had been staying with Kamala while she recovered from all that had happened, father and son greeted him with open arms. "I cannot thank you enough for saving my son from that vile man's influence. I can only hope the hospitality of the Pot, free of charge, whenever you pass through town, would be well appreciated by the heroes who reunited us."

"Even though I was but a new initiate, even though I had not yet been exposed to the worst of the cult's depravities, I committed atrocious things, and when I didn't, I just stood there, watching, as people were murdered, their lives wasted for the fancy of an unseen master,"
Young Fargo appeared distraught, unable to even maintain eye contact with Chrys. "I'm still trying to come to terms with what I have done, but in time, I hope I can make amends to the families who've lost their loved ones."

Chrys just heaved a sigh as he took his final swig of ale. He gave both men a determined look and nodded in the end.

"They say time heals all wounds. I, myself, cannot attest to that. We can only do what we can. Thank you for letting us stay while my friend daughter recovers. I hope you, and the rest of the town, can find a way to live better, live past the unspeakable acts Faerl had done within your lands. Everyone deserves a second chance, except for that man."

Chrys wanted to end by promising them that he will find him and make him pay, but the armored adventurer knew that it may not come to fruition. Chrys could die before he could find Faerl. Chrys could get bored with this questline and forget who the fuck Faerl was. A lot can happen in the next few days, weeks, months. He decided to just wish them luck, let them know that he believed in them without resorting to sappy words. It was probably for the best.

The Swelling Pot → Hill Manor's Mausoleum, Providence

It took her days to heal and get over what had happened in that wretched tower. @Chrys was very considerate and helpful while she recovered. Her guilt constantly nagged at her for being useless, for being too late, and for being such a heavy burden to those around her. Still, her companion, as well as the Fargos, took it upon themselves to dissuade her rising doubts and fears. For those days, she had kept herself locked up in bed, with only those three people allowed to visit her in their room at the Swelling Pot.

Only through the three men did she hear about the collapse of the tower, how the entrance to the underground temple was sealed off, and how the attacks along the trade way dropped off almost immediately. Kamala felt a little better upon hearing that news, and soon, the very next morning, she woke up with renewed vigor. With Chrys by her side, the elf thanked their hosts and met up with the town's farm folk. "Thank you so much for your help, you two," one of the elder farmers held Kamala's hands in his, grateful for their assistance. "We'll be more vigilant from now on, watchful for unseen threats!"

"That's good to hear, kind sir, but be more thankful for those with you today. They are a source of inspiration for the community, perhaps even more so than us passing strangers."

They all made their vows, and Kamala felt herself bloom some more. With the townsfolk more eager to defend their own, now that they were made aware of the dangers lurking just under their noses, they should be much stronger and less vulnerable to the cult's influence. The Fargos would help ensure that. The Broken Horn, Mr. Hugh, also promised to do his part. All that was left was to meet up with the Lord and Lady Varus for their final goodbyes.

"May our dear Olivia finally be at peace," Lord Varus held a sobbing Lady Varus as they stood vindicated over the tombstones of the dearly departed, after spreading the ashes of their beloved daughter in the hallowed ground. Kamala wasn't certain if it would make any difference, only that she felt and hoped it would. To grant someone eternal rest after all those years, to have the mystery of their death finally be solved, would be a great source of relief for those left behind. It seemed to be the case for those who have passed.

From the corner of her eye, Kamala saw a spectral form lurking beside the lord and lady. In silence, it bowed its head, staring at the tombstones as well. Kamala gulped, feeling fear and panic slowly rising from within her. But then the ghost raised its head to look at her and an oblivious Chrys, offering her a warm smile as a token of gratitude. Olivia?

In silence, the ghost removed its gaze from the adventurers and hugged her parents close. It took its time, savoring its final moments, before finally vanishing, allowing itself to be scattered like flower petals on the wind. Kamala teared up at the sight, a smile forming across her lips. I'm glad you've finally found peace, dove.

Her thoughts were then interrupted by Mr. Hugh, the Broken Horn, who loudly blew his nose, his face wet with both snot and tears. Wiping his moistened face off with his white handkerchief, he offered his gratitude to the pair as they began to walk off, having already finished their duties and other concerns with their employers. "Thank you for what you've done. Both of you. You have not only offered relief to Olivia's parents, and saved Young Fargo from certain doom, but you have also earned a lifelong friend in me. Should you pass by this town again, should you need my help for whatever reason, I will be at your disposal, Kamala, Chrys. It's the least I can do."

Kamala shook her head, still smiling, as she placed a warm hand on the former adventurer's shoulder.

"No, my brave and noble knight. The least you can do is protect this town. Thank you for always thinking of Olivia. I hope you all keep each other safe from now on."

With that, goodbyes were exchanged, more promises were made, and the two adventurers went on their way. Kamala held tightly the tome they had found at that tower, in the underground temple. Given its dangerous nature, she knew they must leave it somewhere safe, where its rituals can no longer be misused. Maybe @Ayna Nietzsche would know of such a place, of such a library?

As they walked out of there, Chrys took one final look at the people they'd just left. He couldn't see any spirit, not a single ghost, but he liked to think that Olivia was standing with her parents, finally at peace. Chrys didn't exactly accept the quest to do that, to help anyone, as he only thought about the gold he'd earn for finishing it, the gold he needed to keep his businesses alive, afloat. That didn't mean he wasn't smiling, happy, when he and @Kamala Graham ended up saving an entire town from the cult under their very noses. This quest was pretty nice, save for the gruesome parts.

"You did great, Kamala. Maybe we can visit them again sometime in the future, see how they've fared after being released from that cult's influence."

Maybe. Chrys wasn't really that interested in the probable follow-up. Sure, that Faerl buffoon escaped but they had finished the quest. He himself had gotten his gold, his money, his payment. What else was there left for him to return to? This town, its people, should learn to save themselves. They can't if we keep on interfering...
