Personality
The time skip dulled her edge somewhat; but Madison Freebird is still a relatively decent person who finds it relatively easy to do relatively horrible things to people who deserve them (relatively).
Those who've dealt with the witch can all agree on a list of not-very-nice adjectives with which to describe her; but she can be a valuable asset to those around her--if you can get past the acidic way she treats people and the violent, messy ways she gets things done. And if she likes you. And if she's in a good mood!
The few who Madison deigned worthy of her trust and companionship discovered that she does have her own code of honor. She does not think very highly of betrayal (from herself, or her associates). She can be relentlessly protective of those within her circle, and would expect the same from them. And, even though she is incredibly particular about the wording of any deal and promise she makes, she will see them through to the end.
Positive: Honorable, honest, strong-willed, inquisitive, perceptive
Negative: Acerbic, an enabler, destructive, insecure, lazy
Background
Madison didn't have a terrible upbringing. In fact, it was a lot better than you'd figure. Her parents were loving, if not a bit strict and heavy-handed with their teachings. She was quiet and stayed out of trouble, losing herself in the fabricated worlds of video games and trashy cyberpunk novels. She was a perennial B student in school, even if her parents were always hoping for A's. She took to martial arts rather well, even if sparring practice always devolved into mounted punches and harpy screeching. When it came time to cross over into adulthood, Madison did what her parents wanted and went to college for business, secretly harboring the desire to abandon everything and become a writer.
The first semester went according to everyone's plan. It was two weeks into the second where she finally realized, much to her future infinite sorrow, that she was free to do whatever she wanted. Madison began to slack off in her studies bit by bit, until she stopped showing up to class altogether to put in more hours at the bookstore where she worked at. Once her parents caught wind that their 4.0 hopeful pulled in a 0.4 instead, they were... not furious, but disappointed. The resulting spat between Madison and mom 'n' dad put a crack in their relationship that never quite healed.
Fast-forward eleven years. Madison, sans any real direction in life, continued to fester in her many failures but still refused to accept responsibility for them. She eventually worked her way up to assistant manager at the bookstore, since nobody else would hire her. She's surviving, but barely. Alone in the world, always angry and miserable, and without a way to cope besides drinking herself to sleep in her crappy studio apartment, she was at the end of her rope. Then one day, she overheard two employees talking about this neat little VR game they were hooked on.
They immediately changed the subject when they caught her listening in, but later that evening she found a mysterious e-mail pop up in her inbox...
