Mizuki's first desire upon returning to Terrasphere was to once again experience the freedom of running around in the wilds, hunting down prey in a manner similar to a beast rather than a human hunter with a bow or a gun. However, once the first wave of excitement had subsided and she began to think beyond her basic instincts she realized that, while she had been on Earth trying to forget about Terrasphere and return to a pleasant and secure lifestyle, some of her friends had been trapped in Terrasphere for all those years. It wasn't like she could have done anything about that, or contacted them, but she still felt like now that she had the opportunity she should try to find them and see how they were doing.

After all, while a UI-lock was considered death on Earth, it wasn't like Terrasphere was a prison. Depending on one's mindset, one might be able to stop longing for Earth and become comfortable in this different world. Mizuki sincerely hoped that her friends at least had managed to accept their situation: she couldn't think of any way to bring them back to Earth, now that their bodies had long since stopped functioning, and while it might be a form of denial to pretend everything was fine it was better than spending the rest of your life lamenting misfortune that could no longer be undone.

One of the people she was trying to find was Seigi. With how upbeat and enthusiastic the girl had been odds were good that she'd managed to adapt to this world, especially since it allowed her to be a hero. On the other hand... sometimes the most cheerful ones took misfortune the hardest.

Finding Seigi had been more difficult than Mizuki had expected. She'd have thought that the heroine would have built up a reputation during those four years, and she had: she just didn't have an address the huntress could visit. She'd been forced to ask a lot of people about Seigi's whereabouts, and most of them hadn't been able to help her. It was only when someone mentioned that someone matching Seigi's description had been seen close to the Hylands, the area that Mizuki had been dying to explore before the break.

Heading over to that area, the lupine Traveler spent well over a day looking for a trail, anything which looked like it could belong to a headstrong, indomitable, boisterous heroine. It had been four years since she'd done something like this, so her skills were rustier than she would have liked. However, what had remained after four years combined with Seigi not being the stealthiest of individuals finally allowed her to find what she was looking for: remnants of a camp, mostly cleared out but with remnants of a campfire. She couldn't be completely certain that they belonged to Seigi, but it was as good a track as any, especially as the scent that lingered (aside from that of burning wood and charcoal) was vaguely familiar and nostalgic.

Now Mizuki was following the scent trails on all fours, having transformed into a wolf to speed up her movements as she quickly got closer to the slopes of the plateau which broke through the clouds, atop which the caenis tribes lived. Mizuki hoped that Seigi hadn't climbed all the way to the top: she hadn't really prepared for the full climb, and while she might be able to manage it she would like to refamiliarize herself with this world before she attempted it.

It was a strange hate-love relationship. Really. On one hand, Seigi loved to be around people. Socialize. Be loud. Have fun. An extrovert, simply.

Yet, on the other hand, with the years, Seigi had found herself to be at odds... with herself. It seemed like a switch, she couldn't control, that simply flipped. There were times it was simply exhausting to be the Hero of Justice that everyone expected her to be. The Guts and Effort Girl who had looked down the Abyss and unlocked a new path. She would have loved to be the head-strong girl that had simply accepted things to be the way they are and move forward. And in a way, it actually was.

Seigi was not a liar.
But she was also never truly alone.
And even the most social butterfly needed time for herself.
And when was the last time that was? A death or two ago, probably.

Nonetheless, there were a few things that did not change. Like being a thrill-seeker and having a love for punching things. Not to mention a need for getting even stronger, for herself and those she wished to protect.

Should she have sought out the new, and potential old, players upon hearing the news of Terrasphere opening up again? Maybe. Did she? No. And, ultimately, being more of a do-er than a think-er, she simply continued on her hike.

The path upward was dangerous, but also fun. And considering she could quite literally feast on harpy meat, her baggage was also quite light. The fact she was wearing a modern hoodie didn't make her look like a hiker at all. Though the bandages around her arms certainly helped climbing. But then again, what had ever been the norm with her?

Having had enough rest just hours prior, Seigi was currently on her way on a relatively stable path. But for what it was lacking in having to climb walls and natural hazards, it made up for the occasional monster encounter or, in her case, monster corpse.

As she got closer to her quarry tracking her became significantly easier. Seigi wasn't trying to be subtle or stealthy, and even if the heroine had tried to remain unnoticed Mizuki would still have been able to follow the trail of bodies, courtesy of the monsters that made the monumentally terrible decision of trying to get in Seigi's way. While the huntress remembered the girl as being quite reckless and a bit impulsive, these monsters certainly learned the lesson that this didn't mean she was easy prey.

Fortunately, wolves were decent at handling mountainous region, even if it wasn't their preferred terrain, so Mizuki could continue to cover ground at a good pace. Seigi's monster slaying also meant that she didn't have to waste time dealing with any nuisances that would try to get in her way, as even those that survived Seigi would stay away from that path for a while. As such, it didn't take too long before the huntress spotted a figure in the distance, steadily making her way upwards along this relatively safe route.

She was still too far away to call out, however, so Mizuki would keep doggedly closing the distance, deftly making her way across rocky terrain as she got closer and closer. Since Seigi wasn't in a hurry, catching up to her wasn't too difficult. It took several minutes, but eventually Mizuki was close enough that she decided to return to her humanoid form, continuing the rest of the way on two legs until she was close enough that she didn't think she needed to yell and risk an avalanche. The Ascent was supposed to be relatively safe, but the word "relatively" was given a real workout so far as Mizuki understood it.

Seigi?

The figure that Mizuki had been approaching had only been seen from behind so far, so confirmation that it was indeed who Mizuki was looking for was wisest. That, and it was a good way to catch the girl's attention if it was her.

As Seigi continued on her way, her natural instinct kept her mostly safe from any potential skulduggery. That was, of course, only true for most non-professional and as the naturally stealthy half-wolf called out Seigi's name, it was to no surprise that the hooded girl whirled around in surprise. Fists up, combat-ready.

...

For a moment, Seigi looked the opposite of the upbeat Genki girl she used to be, instead deep in thought. That, however, quickly changed as she murmured a quick 'Shut up' (that Mizuki likely wouldn't have heard if not for her traits) followed by a now brighter. "Mizuki!?"

Wide eyes, and a mix of surprise, joy, but also concern, were plastered on Seigi's face. Mizuki had always kind of 'stuck around,' though Seigi only really got to appreciate the Woof more after their Titanius battle. In there, she had revived Seigi. Something she came to really appreciate.

"Mizuki! You... you exist!" Whatever not-so-positive emotions had lingered for a short while, were now fully replaced by pure joy. In one swift motion, Seigi was suddenly right next to Mizuki. Though seeming to struggle what the next course of action was supposed to be, Seigi embraced her in a short, tight, hug.

Close up, the slight distortions in Seigi's hair (and eye) were a lot easier to recognize. Taking a step back, however, she asked straight. "But why?" Likely more rhetorical, however, as the answer seemed somewhat obvious.

Mizuki blinked as Seigi whirled around as if she was expecting an attack, the huntress bringing her own hands up with her fingers beginning to curl into claws as a reflexive reaction to the sudden movement. However, she quickly dropped her hands again once it became clear Seigi wasn't planning to jump at her, although the wolf couldn't help but notice that her friend wasn't quite the same as before. Well, four years had passed, so that wasn't a surprise, but still.

Her ears twitched as she heard Seigi mutter something which didn't seem to have anything to do with Mizuki. However, before she could remark on that Seigi had already called her name in return, and the bestial huntress nodded and tilted her head.

That's me, yes. It's been a while, hasn't it?

Something of an understatement, given the circumstances. She tilted her head in mild puzzlement at Seigi's next proclamation. Why wouldn't she exist? However, Seigi had already closed the distance at a speed that startled Mizuki, as she didn't remember Seigi being that fast. That didn't mean she didn't return the hug, however: she was happy to see that in some ways Seigi was just as friendly as always.

Did the four-year break make you think I wasn't real? If you're asking why I'm back, well...

The Ascent wasn't the nicest place in the world. The paths were often narrow and treacherous, the beast aggressive, and the weather dangerous, with bursts of wind that could suddenly disturb your footing and send you falling down. This path was one of the safest, but even then it was clear that this place tested all living things that came here. Mizuki looked around, then back at Seigi.

Terrasphere can be accessed from Earth again, and even knowing the dangers I can't really resist coming here. That, and I wanted to see how you and the others trapped here were faring, since we couldn't really do anything to contact you for four years.

Her sharp eyes had allowed her to pick up on the strange features in Seigi's eyes, and the lupine brawler leaned forward to study them more closely.

Are you doing all right Seigi? You looked distracted by something for a moment there.

"Of course..." Seigi gave a small sigh as she closed her eyes for a moment. "I'll save you the lecture about playing again, it's not like it'll stop any of you nutjobs." Seigi smiled, now opening her eyes again and taking a step back as Mizuki was suddenly quite in her face.

"I never doubted you're real! Why?"
Tilting her head in slight confusion. "And I am fine." Seigi had always been a terrible liar, courtesy of not being a liar in the first place. "Just a bunch on my mind, you know!" She gave a nod. "It's way easier to just punch things." Trying to change the topic?

"But, really! As you can see I'm still alive after four years!... AND-" Seigi put on quite the smug smile. "-haven't died a single time since then! And it's not like I've just been hiding either!" Though why did she feel like not dying would change soon?

"I'd totally add you to my friend list and all! But no such thing. You gonna keep playing, yes?" Taking a quick glance around the Ascent to ensure they were still safe. "Well, it's not like I don't understand. This is pretty awesome. You wanna go for a climb?"

Mizuki grinned. She couldn't blame Seigi for being concerned, but the heroine was correct that any lecture about the threat of death was going to be pointless.

If being able to think about it for four years didn't convince us to stop playing I don't think a single lecture is going to change anything.

With the hug finished Mizuki planted her hands on her hips, her tail slowly wagging from side to side behind her. She could tell that Seigi wasn't telling the whole truth, but she didn't want her friend to feel pressured after meeting up for the first time in four years.

If you say you're fine I won't pry. I'm just glad you're doing all right: not dying for all that time must have been pretty challenging with how enthusiastic you've always been about heading for where the trouble is.

Maybe Seigi had become a little bit reckless over the years? She had four years of isolation within Terrasphere, after all: to presume she was exactly the same as before would be unrealistic. Her grin returned as Seigi asked whether she was planning to keep playing, the wolf girl displaying her enthusiasm and determination with little restraint.

I thought about it many times over the last four years, but I can't leave this world alone. You'll have to put up with me for a while longer Seigi. And a climb sounds good to me! Were you planning to head all the way to the top, or are we just working up a sweat?

She turned her gaze towards the steep mountainside that reached far into the sky, far enough that the top wasn't visible from down here due to the clouds that got in the way. To make it all the way up there... wasn't something you just did on a whim. But Mizuki wasn't about to back down if Seigi wanted to go on an adventure.

"Heh..." Seigi mused for a moment, closing her eyes, before responding with a slightly sad undertone.

"We're only dead if there's nobody to revive you." Her explanation turned a little bit 'cold'. "Mountain climbing is dangerous too...in the rea- other world. But people carry safety gear, just in case. It's the same here. At least, before the UI lock was known. But I am already past that. So of course, I'll do what I think is best. Which is ensuring nobody else has to meet the same fate. How many times did you die, yet?"

Rolling her shoulders a bit, she punched her fist together. "But you're right! At the end of the day, it's just about punching things. I totally get it. It helps to take your mind off things..." She looked at the mountain above her. "Just like climbing this mountain. I... didn't particularly have a destination in mind. Not for anything, really..."

Mizuki frowned as Seigi explained that just because she was still alive didn't mean she hadn't died. Which might sound like madness back on Earth, but here in Terrasphere...

...You do have a point. (She looked up at the sheer mountainside that extended all the way past the clouds.) On Earth it'd be considered suicidal to climb this without a lot of preparations. We'll have to be careful, although at least I can try flying if I were to fall.

The question directed at her caught the huntress off guard, but she quickly shook her head.

I haven't died yet. I sometimes thought I was going to die, but so far I've managed to avoid that... or other people were there to help me out. I think you've saved my life at least once already. (Seigi was clearly having a lot on her mind, so Mizuki patted the brunette on the shoulder.) Let's not think too much about it then. Just climb until we're tired of it, and then we can go back down. At least on the descent, I should be able to get us both down pretty quickly.

She was so used to Seigi being a bundle of energy that this more thoughtful hero standing in front of her was taking some getting used to, but Mizuki figured that it would be better to try and help Seigi have something else to focus on.

As the two of them were talking it looked like they'd drawn some unwanted attention. Mizuki's ear twitched before she looked into the distance and upwards, where she heard the faint sound of beating wings. Those wings wounded pretty large... large enough that whatever creature they belonged to could be an issue. And it was getting closer.

...We might have another activity to deal with before we can resume climbing.

In the distance six winged shapes were approaching the two Travelers, swooping down from further up the mountain. Given the distance it would still take a minute or so before these... birds (they looked like birds to Mizuki) would be in combat range, but both Mizuki and Seigi were experienced enough that they could tell they were being targeted.

Seigi tilted her head ever so slightly as Mizuki spoke of flying and taking both of them down fairly quickly. As far as Seigi knew Mizuki was... curious, the Hero stepped around Mizuki. Yup, tail. Before carefully touching Mizuki's ears next. Fluffy and... wolf-like? What bird had ears anyway!? Neither did Seigi see any feathers.

"Mizuki..." Seigi then spoke about, wanting to bring up the whole flying issue before, but suddenly, it simply made click. But, yes, of course! "You can fly, too!? It's amazing how you aren't letting your dreams be dreams and are pushing past wolf limits!" She gave Mizuki a thumbs up as approval before tilting her head towards the oncoming avian hunters.

"Urgh, more of them!?" Focusing her attention on the oncoming enemy, Seigi got closer to the wall. "They might have an advantage in this terrain but they still have to get closer to us." She stated kinda the obvious as, suddenly, a small flock of carnivorous birds flew past them, making a U-turn before they started descending upon the two girls.

This time, Seigi wasn't attacking first and instead countered their attack as two went for a nose-dive. Dodging instinctively as she grabbed each beak with each hand before pretty much breaking their neck through a swirl motion. A third bird, which went for a slower assault by flapping its wings to lose momentum and instead opt for a claw attack, managed to scratch across Seigi's torso. Though the girl quickly got a hold of its claws too, pulling it down while forcing her knee onto its body.

Despite the simple, but effective moves, something seemed off. It wasn't like Seigi had ever done much learned martial arts outside of instinctive attack patterns, but she also liked to use overly flashy things and, well, yell attack names. This time, however, there was just a hint of simple, primal, destruction.

Mizuki raised an eyebrow as Seigi's first response to the luna wolf's words was to walk around her. Turning her head to follow the heroine's movements Mizuki's tail gave a single swish as her mismatched eyes expressed her mild puzzlement, which only increased when the brunette reached out and touched her ears, which flicked in response.

Something wrong?

She was beginning to get worried that Seigi didn't believe her, but suddenly she was instead being praised for not limiting herself to using wolf traits. The luna wolf blinked and stared at Seigi for several seconds.

You didn't know I can also use Metamorph to turn into a bird? Being able to fly is very useful.

Although in Seigi's defence it wasn't like Mizuki turned into a bird very often. When possible she stuck to wolf traits, but since wolves couldn't fly she occasionally had to go outside of her established repertoire and adopt some unusual features. She could have explained this in more detail, but the two of them had a more serious matter to attend to now.

Following Seigi's example, Mizuki made sure that the sheer wall of the Ascent was at her back so the reapers had to approach her from the front. Her hands and feet quickly shifted into clawed paws, the luna wolf entering a lower stance as she kept her mismatched eyes focused on the predatory birds which were trying to turn the two of them into a meal.

Shouldn't be a problem with the two of us.

Both of them were veterans, after all, and while the ascent reapers were known for preying on those who dared to brave the challenges of the Ascent they were at the end of the day just some dumb birds. Mizuki parted her lips slightly, strong fangs visible as she waited for the birds to come close enough so she could teach them a lesson.

With Seigi taking on three of the birds Mizuki was left facing the other half of the flock, her clawed hands extended. The three attacked at the same time, their sharp spear-like beaks aiming to pierce her. The huntress timed her attack, at the last moment ducking even lower to avoid one of the reapers while lashing out to tear open the bellies of the remaining two.

Unfortunately, her timing was slightly off, and while one of her claws found its mark the other missed. Mizuki gritted her teeth as she felt sharp talons score her arm and shoulder, drawing blood as the bird passed her and flew upwards to avoid hitting the mountain. The other bird wasn't as fortunate, letting out a single, short screech as four deep wounds were carved into its torso. Losing control of its body it smashed against the sheer wall behind Mizuki, its body twitching for a mere handful of seconds as it collapsed onto the ground before it stopped moving entirely.

With three of the six birds taken care of the remaining three had regrouped, creating distance by flapping their multitude of wings before circling around. They hadn't given up the hunt yet, and with both Mizuki and Seigi injured they were aiming to finish the fight with another frontal charge.
