Ruby didn't look behind her back, giving all her trust to Kyra as she tried to dart off from the danger of what could come next... And that was the enemy's fall.

Upon hitting the lake, the massive and overwhelmingly heavy body of the minotaur created a powerful wave, shaking the whole lake and creating an enormous wave- And the trick was that Ruby needed to somehow avoid it while not losing her speed, so she wouldn't sink as well, knowing that her low energy wouldn't allow her to have the energy to swim properly.

[ 24/100 ]

Keeping up her pace, she firstly and foremost focused on avoiding the immediate side effects of the creature's fall, dodging the falling stalactites from the ceiling, which was caused by the tremor the creature created.

Her speed made dodging both easy and difficult at the same time, having to trust mostly on the fact she was being too fast to get hit by coincidence, but also too fast to have better control of where she was going... And with the last stalactites falling, the giant wave remained.

[ 18/100 ]

This was the trickiest part, with the giant wave crashing and bringing down structures like an unstoppable tsunami. The structures being destroyed meant more projectiles to dodge, except this time there was the wall of water charging toward her relentlessly... And with the rock wall becoming closer, soon she would need to face the clash of the wave, unless-

Taking a deep breath, Ruby braced herself for another explosion of speed, keeping her run toward the cave's wall and then erupting in another sonic boom, except this time she lifted herself off by running on the walls, maintaining speed enough for her to defy the gravity while she began reaching the highest spot of the wall, eventually finding herself running on the ceiling.

The wave crashed against the wall, eventually dying off while the lake became agitated due to all of the impacts it had received.

[ 6/100 ]

With her legs burning and her energy bar nearing its end, Ruby found herself reaching a dead end. The ceiling itself had a hole to the outside, which meant there was a point she would have no more 'ground' to run through.

The fall was enormous, but Ruby still had one last plan that would need the last few remains of energy she had after two strong sonic booms.

Slipping her feet that no longer could step anywhere, Ruby began falling from the highest spot of the cave, with her body being roughly brushed by the air resistance as she was falling toward the water, doing her best to try to get as near the land as possible.

Struggling, she managed to stay about sixty feet away from the land, using one last bit of energy to make her dynamism shoot herself upwards a bit more, negating the deadly impact with the water after such a long fall.

However...

[ 2/100 ]

With her energy bar flickering and the adrenaline of the dynamism fading, Ruby found herself struggling to keep her head above water after finally diving into the agitated water.

She tried to breathe every moment her face managed to slip out, but soon a consequential (but much weaker) wave splashed on her face, getting water in her mouth and nostrils as she tried to get back to control of the situation, hoping she would reach safety soon enough... Though the water kept dragging her away, taking advantage of her weakened body.

Kyra

What happened next, Kyra could barely begin to comprehend. The minotaur had slammed into the water, causing a rippling of waves that cascaded into something far more dangerous. Suddenly, it appeared as if the entire cavern itself was collapsing inwards. Kyra took three steps backwards from the water's edge, her eyes darting for any sign of Ruby, searching desperately for the small beastfolk that had led her here - finally spotting something racing across the ceiling.

"Ruby! Ruby watch-"

Her call was cut off as the individual suddenly dove for the water, the small body clearly going limp from its exhaustion. Kyra watched as the form submerged, disappearing beneath the still rough waters. She bounced from foot to foot, waiting for the other to surface. Seconds passed, slowly turning into moments, but there was no sign of Ruby.

"Ooohhh....I'm going to kill her if she died!"

Rushing to the edge, Kyra launched herself into the water, closing her eyes as her body impacted with a solid splash upon the surface. Forcing herself downwards, she pried her eyes open, looking for any sign of the other. The darkness seemed to evelope her, small rays of light piercing momentarily as the waves above began to calm.

She pushed herself deeper into the depths, searching. Her eyes caught sight of something in the dimmed light, and she rushed towards it. The shift, the motion of movement, gave her hope against the darkness and worry.

Kyra reeled back at the last second, realising that she had not found Ruby, but had rather come across the dying form of the minotaur itself - struggling to raise itself from the bottom and return to the world above water. Dodging, as best as she could beneath the surface, she moved past the gargantuan being, looking for her friend.

She wasn't sure how long she'd been beneath the surface - certainly long enough to cause her lungs to begin to burn. She forced herself further, determined to rescue Ruby, determined not to fail the other. She was just giving herself a quick reminder when a glint of red caught her attention.

She dove forwards, aiming for the glint. There! Oh, please still be alive! Please be alive!

She grasped the form, dragging it upwards, struggling against the weight that seemed to try and pull her further downwards, struggling against the burning in her lungs, the signs that she herself was near her end. She fought for the surface, fought for survival.

A large gasp of air as she broke the surface, before dragging the other up with her. She pulled them both to the edge, half-tossing Ruby upon the hard rock, before collapsing herself beside the girl.

By the end of everything, everything was way too fuzzy and blurry to be understandable.

Ruby's lungs were burning, with any attempt of grasping any air being in vain. She did the effort of not allowing water to get in, but for how much longer...

Death was already an expected outcome, but soon her half-open eyes, and all her enhanced senses could spot the girl approaching. Ruby watched her, with her ear twitching weakly while she sank further... And further...

She tried to reach her hand out, but not even that her body allowed her to do, with the energy hanging on the lowest it could ever be.

Thankfully, she could feel herself being pulled above, and after another numbing moment, she felt something rough. Was... Was she on land again? The surface was hard, and she could feel her body throbbing in pain and exertion, just as she turned to look at Kyra, mostly doubled and blurry due to everything.

"... Ky...ra..?"

Her body continued to refuse to move.

Kyra

A softly spoken question, barely audible. Her own vision flitted between reality, and darkness. Kyra struggled to maintain a grasp on consciousness, struggling against the harsh pull of exhaustion, pain and a desire to simply sleep, even if it was the last thing she ever did.

"Ruby...you're...safe now...mostly..."

She blacked out for a few moments. Darkness surrounded her, as she finally gave in, allowing her consciousness to be sucked up by whatever was pulling her away. When she awoke, she found herself still sprawled out beside Ruby, the other breathing normally, but still not entirely recovered.

"Not...the best...adventure I've ever been...on..."

She muttered the words, not expecting anyone to hear. Her eyes glanced around as her ears twitched, confirming what she already had guessed - they were still alone, so safe for the moment. Although Kyra had no way if that would last. She knew that she needed to get Ruby out of here, as quickly as possible.

Rolling over, she laid a single hand on Ruby, focusing her energy. She formed in her mind the imagery that was required, transferring her own energy into a healing connection, forcing the ailments in Ruby's body to dissolve, to form away, anything to get the girl back on her feet.

There was a flicker of energy bathing Ruby, with her energy recovering unnaturally quick. She took a deeper breath, widening her eyes for a moment and having a twitch of reaction, blinking and feeling the dizziness and heaviness of her body disappearing, allowing her to sit and breath in relief, slowly shifting to cast a glance at Kyra.

"... I... I thought I was the one that had... To protect you..." She said, looking at her before showing a faint smile. "... But there you are... Saving my life for the second time today." Ruby stretched her tail, closing her eyes for a moment and trying to recompose herself.

"... This is... All being more dangerous than I expected." She muttered. "I shouldn't have brought you in here."

Even if Ruby decided to take on the most dangerous parts of the encounters, nearly dying and having to get the underleveled girl to save her twice wasn't ideal. She needed to do much better than that.

Kyra

She sat back as Ruby began speaking, her words weak but significant nonetheless. Kyra sat back on the ground, letting herself rest for a brief moment as she revelled in the fact that they had survived. She let out a sigh of relief, before poking the other in the arm.

"You know...you'd survive longer if you didn't try to go the speed out sound so much."

She let out a slight giggle, trying to oppress it before letting the fit take over her entirely. For a few moments, her giggling filled the air, before she finally got herself under control.

"Is this what it's like travelling with you? Cause if so, I may have to stick around just to keep you bandaged up all the time!"

She gave another sigh, before laying back on the ground. She was tired, so very tired. Her adrenaline had finally left her system, leaving her feeling drained - as if she hadn't slept for weeks. She felt her eyes becoming heavy, and although she tried to fight against it, she couldn't help but let them slide closed entirely.

"I think...I'll just rest here...a bit..."

Ruby opened one of her eyes when she was poked, looking up at Kyra and breathing a quiet laugh before tapping her tail weakly on her. "It is just my speed, I can't keep it inside of me all the time." She said, pursing her lips and looking at Kyra. "I was worried that thing would catch the two of us, so it was better to at least ensure your safety." She paused, then smiled.

"You did great back there." Even if she was lower level, she had a lot of potentials, and she did everything with confidence that was hard to find even in veterans.

She chuckled lowly, averting her eyes. "Yeah... I mean, if you would rather not travel with me because of it, it is fine too." Her eyes closed again as she continued to lay there, with her ears twitching when listening to Kyra laying back down again.

Ruby rolled to face her, tapping her tail on the ground to activate an Harmonic charm in it.

"I think I will too... If any enemy approaches, their steps on the ground will make loud notes." She said, exhaling some air through her nostrils. "... A rest will be really... Good..." Ruby muttered quietly.

Rest. Rest had been a good idea. She'd been so tired, so sore. Laying back to rest had seemed the only positive thing that Kyra had done all day, aside from meeting Ruby. Although that meeting had brought with it far more injuries - both physical, and mental - than Kyra could've imagined when she'd first seen the small beastfolk playing with the puzzle in the woods.

"Shi...shit! I fell asleep!"

She awoke with a start, sitting upright in a movement that caused her head to pound for a few, brief seconds. She glanced over, finding Ruby still laying beside her, the cave around them otherwise empty. Her eyes took a moment to adjust to the dim light around them, Kyra realising with a delayed start that they had managed to rest their way into what appeared to be late evening, based on the hole in the ceiling.

"Uhm...Ruby? Did...did we plan on being here all night? Because...it's getting dark...and...well, we should probably find a way back to some safe place, right?"

She leaned over slightly, giving the other girl a soft shake with her hand, her head mere centimetres from the other as she softly called to her.

"Hey...Ruby. Ruby...Ruuubbbyyyy....wake up! Ruby!"

Ruby's ears twitched at the initially surprised yelp from Kyra, though it wasn't really enough to make her wake up. She blinked, sighing for a moment and casting a glance up to Kyra. "Nnnhm... Kyra?" She rubbed her eyes, swaying her tail and looking at the girl's eyes and then shifting to look up at the sky.

"Ah-! Oh no-" She did her best to not suddenly stand, not wishing to hit her head on Kyra by accident and get to sit.

"OH- Oh wait, tomorrow is Saturday..." Ruby sighed in relief. Chances were that none of her customers were going to request anything anyway. She peeked at Kyra, pausing and shaking her head. "No... I didn't plan to stay here all night." She said, letting out a quiet chuckle until some warnings of real life necessity popped up in front of her.

"Actually... I think I need to log off for a bit, can you wait in here? We've been playing for hours now, after all." Ruby said, wanting to be a bit subtle before she opened her UI and...

"Huh-" She blinked, then widened her eyes.

"Wh-What?!" Ruby's eyes widened, seeing the logout button grey and blocked. "Why? We aren't in combat!"

Ruby had finally awoken fully, enough that she seemed to remember where they were, and what was going on. That was good. Kyra nodded as the other girl spoke about needing to log out for a little while, realising that she too likely had some things that needed to be handled in the real world.

"Yeah, sure. I can hang here for a few-"

She was cut off as the other girl suddenly turned franctic, her voice taking on a surprised tone, and her eyes going wide. Kyra watched her for a second, before realising that Ruby wasn't going to willingly explain the issue without a bit of prompting. Bringing up her own menu, she began asking her question, before coming to a sudden halt herself.

"Something wrong? You just need to go to this menu, and click the...wait, what the? Does it...normally look like this?"

She knew it didn't but perhaps there was something else going on. They weren't in combat, that was true. So as far as Kyra was aware, there shouldn't be anything holding them in here. Perhaps it was a location based thing?

"Maybe it's because we're not in a safe zone? Was there any sort of...requirement for logout? Anything about needing to be in like, a civilised place? Not in the wilds? It could just be that we need to get back to town, or something..."

Which, she realised, would be a slight problem, if they didn't find a way out of this cavern system soon. Her eyes glanced around them, looking for any ideas, any way forward to safety. The only thing she found, was the exit they had been heading for before the minotaur. She wasn't sure what to do, and decided the more experience player was likely the one to follow in this instance.

Ruby was just about to panic about the situation, but as soon as her eyes met Kyra's, she halted herself. No, she wasn't the newbie in here, as the 'veteran', she couldn't just leave Kyra in a spot she would be with someone pathetic. She had already been saved by the girl twice, she had to make sure both of them would come back safely.

"I will get us out of here, I promise," Ruby said with resolve, determined to not let things go worse than they already were.

Shifting her eyes around, she held a breath and decided the next action.

"We should try to go deeper. Going out up there will be nearly impossible... Maybe I could try, but it would be extremely dangerous, and I would need to leave you here. This isn't a choice." Ruby shook her head, then gesturing forward.

"We can't go back either, the path we used to come is blocked, so our only chance is to find an exit... The good thing is that, considering the size of this labyrinth, there is probably a lot of entrances for it-- And that means, there are a lot of exits too." She said, looking at Kyra.

"As long as we remain firm, we can do it... And this time, I won't be doing anything risky. Let's be cautious, and only hurry if things..." She didn't want to think about it, but-- "Get too dire."

Her head had tilted slightly to the left, watching the other player. She could see the panic rise on her face for a brief moment, before tossing it aside. A calm, collected appearance took over. The words, carefully considered, seemed to match the attempted portrayal. Kyra knew that Ruby must be afeared to a small degree, as much as Kyra herself was.

But what mysteries are solved by giving in to your fear? We've made it this far, surely we can make it out of here...given enough time, and patience. So long as we're together...She let the thought trail off, knowing what the negativity would lead towards. It wasn't worth it; instead she needed to focus on the positive. They were still alive.

"You're right...for now we just need to keep pushing on ahead. Somewhere in here must be an exit. We'll find it, together. And then we'll be out of here. For now."

She shot a sly grin at Ruby as she added the last words, hinting that they would someday return here. She wasn't sure if that was the case, but she knew two things for sure. Ruby was an explorer, and this was an unexplored area. If there was something Kyra was willing to bet on, it was that she would return, if only for curiosity sake.

"Alright...ready to get going, then? We've likely got a long walk ahead of us, so if you need to rest a bit more, now is the time to do so. I'm ready whenever you are, so just let me know...y'know, whenever you're ready and all."

She waited patiently, rising only once Ruby was ready to go. She kept her smile plastered on her face, trying to hide the fear she was feeling down below - knowing that Ruby needed to see her strength; or at least her attempt at strength.

Ruby listened to Kyra's response, starting with an approval and ending with some hint, a hint that honestly made Ruby feel relieved in a way. "Yeah. We will still find more about this mysterious place, but for now we need to be safe." Ruby said, smiling softly at Kyra's grin.

"Just because explorers have a vow of death, it doesn't mean we are suicidal." She breathed a faint chuckle, taking a deep breath and peeking at Kyra when she mentioned being ready when she was.

"Usually it would be nice to rest, but-" Ruby got on her feet, offering a hand to help Kyra to stand before continuing. "- Considering I am even receiving some warnings of real life stuff, I think we go as early as possible... I am all by myself too, so no one will plug me out if I stay online for too long." She said, frowning and casting a glance to Kyra.

"How about you? Are you alone out of here?" Ruby asked, already marching toward the exit of that specific area, pausing in front of a wall that was covered with foreign runes, leaning in to try to understand it.

She took the offered hand, pulling herself to her feet with the help of Ruby's strength. Her eyes glanced about the cavern around them, but returned to the other beastfolk at the mention of the vow. She'd likely heard it mentioned earlier, but had overlooked it with...well, everything going on.

"Did you say vow of death? I must've misheard that..."

She glanced at the beastfolk, waiting for an answer before shaking her head in response. She wasn't sure what to make of that, but before she could even consider it Ruby had asked another question - a far more personal question.

Kyra took a few steps, remaining silent as she considered her options. Sure, it was logical to ask if she was alone in this instance - there was concern to be had. But...But nothing, she's just trying to be considerate is all. Probably worried that we'll get stuck here, and can't log out, or something silly like that. As if the game would do that to us.

She scoffed silently, before nodding to herself and deciding there was no harm in answering the question. Her voice came out a little hesitant at first, but quickly grew in confidence as she answered in earnest.

"Well...no...I mean, yes. I'm alone. There's no one who really...well, no one who lives with me. I don't think anyone would even drop by and check for a few days, either...not that it's a big deal. I'm sure we'll be out of here soon enough! It's not like we're going to get trapped in here forever!"

She hoped her false optimism would boost Ruby's own confidence. Kyra knew that it was a concerning situation, but she was sure they would make their way out of here. Hopefully.

Her attention averted from the runes, twitching her ears at Kyra's curiosity. "Yeah, vow of death. Well... It is the nickname, the name of the vow is Torchbearer's Vow, and we are known as Death's Torchbearers, so by connection--" Ruby cleared her throat, closed her eyes and held the whistle on her chest before reciting it:

"I, Crimson Ruby, am one who defies death, to beat back darkness and light the path forward. I acknowledge the dangers of the expeditions, that death walks beside me always, and that my whistle is a promise to keep my skills sharp, my will steeled, to become the source of strength for my comrades, and to never abandon my company even in the direst of times. Ad astra per aspera, our aspirations take us to the stars."

Ruby then paused, opening her eyes again to glance at Kyra with a small smile. "It is the way of the Whistle." She said.

Her focus vaguely returned to the runes, and while Kyra gave her a confidence boost, a small smile crossed her lips. "That's true. I personally like having a plan B though." Ruby said before suddenly speaking out a phone number, country code included.

It probably could catch the other girl by surprise, but Ruby elaborated. "I forgot my phone at a friend's house, just pretend to be a support from some VR Software and tell her that Yuhan is stuck in it and needs to be plugged out." She said, still focusing her eyes on the runes and suddenly perking her ears up, starting to trace her fingers on it.

She'd flinched as Ruby reached for the whistle, half expecting the girl to blow into it once more and cause the same overwhelming pain to Kyra's hearing that she'd done last time. Instead, however, the girl began reciting what appeared to be some sort of attestation; likely signifying their promise as a part of the adventuring group that Ruby had stated she was a member.

"That was...ahh...something..."

Was all she could say as Ruby finished, her explanation confirming that it was in fact some sort of attestation of what they would do. She wasn't entirely sure what to make of it, the whole thing far beyond anything Kyra had experienced before. It definitely held true to the in-depth roleplaying aspect she'd seen throughout the world of Terrasphere.

As Ruby rattled off a phone number suddenly, Kyra did her best to memorise it, repeating it in order to ensure she'd gotten it correct. She flushed as Ruby explained what it was, realising the level of personal information she was being given at the current moment. For a moment, she considered giving her own number out in return, before realising she would have no reason to - there was no one else to call; no one to reach out to. The realisation brought a pang to Kyra's heart, one that she tried to hide as she turned to look at the runes that had caught Ruby's eye.

"Another puzzle, perhaps? Or do you think they're guides...ways of marking locations?"

Ruby didn't mind the lack of reaction, nor at the lack or return

"Maybe, I am mostly wondering if it is just a mark, if it is a text, or... hmm?" Her ears perked up at a particular rune, averting her eyes to look at the pillars that place held. She then glanced at the rune that was right next to it, it was the same that had on the entrance door.

"W-Wait, you are right, Kyra! This is a map! A very unpractical one, but still is!" Relief and joy hinted in Ruby's voice, who softened her muscles and sighed. "I-I am so glad, we actually have a chance to escape." She peered to see another rune similar to the door's, and it was two spaces to the right and then one space up.

Ruby swallowed. "Either this rune is three areas away from us, or it is extremely far because it is in another line of runes." She clenched her fist, turning to look at Kyra's eyes.

"It is our only chance though." She muttered.

Kyra watched as Ruby bounced between the runes, the pillars, and a few other minor details. The girl seemed to come somewhat back to life as she realised there was some sort of mapping system in place. She waited patiently as Ruby seemed to work out some sort of path forward for them, unsure of how she could possibly assist - this appeared to be her companions area of expertise, far more than Kyra's own.

"So...we just use the runes to guide us out then? That seems easy enough, right? I mean, if it's a map, that means there's some sort of logic to this place...so we should be able to find an exit easily!"

She wasn't entirely sure how accurate any of her estimations were. It all sounded rather simple, once it was broken down and laid out - which made Kyra wonder if she was overlooking something. It was quite possible, given her relative recentness to the game itself.

She glanced over at Ruby, wondering if there was anything else she was missing, but more importantly waiting for the other beastfolk to take the lead. Whether she was confident in her answer or not, this was still Ruby's area, and Kyra knew better than to try and take the lead on something that someone else was more experienced in.

Her ears perked up.

"Exactly!" Ruby nodded at Kyra's words. The girl was quick to pick things up, which hopefully meant that if both of them parted ways for whatever reason, she would manage to keep herself firm.

"And if we figure out this logic, we will be able to get through this labyrinth easily if we ever decide to come here again." Ruby said. Her eyes then traced the runes again, pondering. "Some other runes repeat themselves too, so they may have clues of what exists in each area." She tilted her head, trying to see some similarities.

"The rune before the... exit? It seems like it is the same as the one we have for this area. So I guess that area will have something like that minotaur..." Ruby said, and after taking a moment to memorize the runes, she began walking toward the open path.

The path, this time, was more akin a tunnel than a corridor, with the irregular ground, walls and ceilings made it hard to have a proper moving.

Ruby could manage to balance herself on it, taking a few glances back to Kyra to see if she was okay.

She gave a side glance and a smirk towards Ruby at the mention of possibly returning in the future. Kyra had no doubts that the other would return here; their desire to explore seemed engrained in their very essence of the game itself. Kyra, however, wondered if she'd ever return here. It didn't seem entirely impossible, but there'd have to be a good reason.

"Well...I don't know if I will ever return, but I can definitely see you spending a lot of time in here. You seem to almost glow at the thought of exploring the unknown. I can't see you leaving this place alone forever!"

She watched as Ruby seemed to make connections on the runes, flinching slightly at the thought of facing another minotaur. She wasn't excited at the thought of having to face that large beast again, not so soon after the first encounter. She felt herself shiver in response, but pushed herself to follow Ruby as the other began making their way deeper into the underground tunnel.

The rough ground made following Ruby more tricky - the other clearly used to such uncommon ground. Kyra managed to straggle along behind, often times using the sidewall as support as she went, but keeping pace as best as she could.

"Are all...unexplored areas...like this? I can barely...keep my footing here...it's so wibbly...wobbly!"

She felt her breath coming in gasps as her legs burned. This was far harder than anything else she'd ever done - it definitely didn't help that her cardio appeared as effective in game as it was out of game. Something she wondered if she needed to work on. Guess who's going to get back into hiking in the real world...
