Understood. Give me a minute longer and I'll be done cleaning myself.

True to her word, Mizuki would only take another minute before she stepped out of the water, this time not bothering to try and shake herself dry since Cleo would be helping her with that anyway. Of course, that did mean that she didn't want to put her clothes on just yet... The huntress looked at her underwear, clean and safely placed on top of a rock so it wouldn't get muddy again, then shook her head and turned towards Cleo.

My clothes are on that rock. Go ahead and cast your spell on me and the clothes.

When Cleo turned around she'd find that Mizuki was facing her, the wolfess's face red as her tail was curled up between her legs to hide her private parts while one of her arms was wrapped around her chest so Cleo wouldn't see anything she couldn't see on a beach. It was an embarrassing situation, but Mizuki wanted to get dry as soon as possible.

And maybe she didn't dislike the idea of Cleo looking at her quite as much as she was telling herself.

That was fair enough. Cleo nodded, though then she felt stupid when she realized that Mizuki wouldn't be able to see it and settled for grunting an affirmative and waiting for the beastkin woman to get out of the water. That was when she heard Mizuki tell her that her clothes were on a rock and, true enough, she spotted them sat there, slowly losing the moisture as they dried out. She focused on Mizuki's clothes, casting her spell on them and feeling another drain on her energy as the spell took hold, the clothes drying out faster now.

And then it came time for the part that she was dreading and excited for all at the same time. She slowly turned around until she was looking at Mizuki, who was facing her with her tail curled up between her legs and an arm wrapped aruond her chest. Her mouth felt dry again and the red haired human had to swallow and lick her lips, before suddenly her common sense kicked in again.

With monumental focus, she cast the spell on Mizuki, who would experience the rest of the world slowing down as her own time was sped up, water dripping off of her way faster.

Okay, it should only be a couple of minutes before we're both bone dry.

She swallowed, still staring at Mizuki with her face completely red, before she coughed and looked away.

You're...really gorgeous, by the way...

It was interesting to watch Cleo's magic at work, so far as it was visible. The clothes, and the rock Mizuki had placed them on to keep them clean, didn't immediately seem to change much, but after several seconds it was like watching a video which had been sped up, the rock and clothes visibly turning paler as all the moisture evaporated and dissipated into the air. It probably would have been quite the awe-inspiring sight for Landers, who wouldn't be familiar with how modern technology worked. As it was, Mizuki found it intriguing to think that Cleo could make something like this happen in reality rather than on a screen.

However, that was nothing compared to the embarrassment and awkwardness she felt when Cleo's eyes fell on her own body. The wolfess didn't move, but her red face and the way she kept her arm and tail firmly in place made it clear that she wasn't unaffected by the way the lancer gazed at her, taking in the sight of her nude form and the way droplets of water dripped from her hair and slid down her skin. When the redhead's magic took effect the experience was like the reverse of observing it from the outside: instead of watching something speed up, the rest of the world slowed down. Cleo's movements looked like the female human was underwater, and the stream the two of them had been bathing in but minutes ago was now blatantly defying physics with how leisurely the waters travelled onwards.

Her ears perked up in startlement as Cleo spoke up, Mizuki's heterochromatic eyes quickly seeking out Cleo's crimson gaze before flickering to the side again.

Th-that's good to know, thank you.

She didn't make any moves, standing there silently waiting for all the water to evaporate like what had happened with her clothes. This did, of course, mean she was still almost fully exposed to Cleo's gaze, even if the lancer was clearly also feeling the embarrassment and not looking straight at the huntress.

Cleo's words made Mizuki blush even harder as she grabbed the tip of her tail to keep it from wagging involuntarily.

...Look who's talking.

The words came out without much thought behind them, Mizuki's eyes widening in shock as she realized what she'd said instead of the more socially acceptable words of gratitude she should have used. She nearly stumbled over herself trying to correct the mistake.

I-I mean, you're very beautiful yourself, and I think I'm quite blessed right now... Sorry, I shouldn't be acting so forward...

She coughed and turned her gaze towards the ground.

But thank you for the compliment.

The two of them stood there, after Mizuki had spoken, the words tumbling out of her mouth seeming to take even the beastkin woman by surprise, for some reasion. Still, the response had Cleo blushing as she looked to the side and away from the wolf woman, before she glanced back to catch that Mizuki's eyes were pointed solely at the ground. She focused, trying to speed up the rate at which Mizuki dripped dry and the water that clinged to her evaporated off of her body.

And to Mizuki, the world would slow almost to a stop as Cleo rushed to make the girl dry again, until the spell cut off and Mizuki was bone dry, standing there. Cleo blushed more, rubbing the back of her neck, before beginning to pull her clothes on.

Uh well, you can get dressed now. I'm really sorry about the fact that you had to stand there and be looked at by me.

She blushed and focused on pulling her clothes on, until she was standing there, fully dressed, waiting for Mizuki to be completely dressed herself.

And um, well, thank you, for the compliment and for being so sweet and respectful and stuff...

Mizuki could tell that Cleo's magic was becoming stronger as everything around her slowed down even further until it looked like the world was frozen in time. The river was no longer running, the lancer's chest no longer rose and fell from a steady breathing pattern, and the clouds above were motionless. It was like she was in a movie which had been paused, but she knew that the world around her was more tangible than that.

Of course, Mizuki herself didn't slow down, and the water that clung to her curvy figure would, from her perspective, take just as long to evaporate. It was only from the outside that it would look like she'd dried up instantly. As she waited for nature to do its job Mizuki looked around, wondering what it'd look like for Cleo: most likely it'd be like the wolfess's body was blurring from the sheer speed as she breathed and turned her head.

As the minutes passed from her perspective the huntress would also study Cleo more closely, her blush slowly fading as she regained control over herself. Bathing with another female, and being seen naked by another female, really wasn't that awkward: it was that kiss which had unbalanced her, and the fact that Cleo made a stronger impression on her than she'd thought. But she wasn't a teenager, and now that she had several minutes to herself she regained some of her cool.

In fact, she became so calm that she briefly forgot that Cleo was still looking at her, her tail uncurling and returning to its normal position. At the same time, she raised both hands and studied them, noting that it looked like nearly all the water was gone. It was in this pose that Cleo's spell came to an end and Mizuki's time realigned itself with the rest of the world, the wolfess blinking as her cheeks reddened again.

Reflexively she tried to cover herself, but she stopped herself and took a deep breath. She really had to stop acting like a teenager, no matter how much the sight of Cleo's nude form made her imagination conjure up lurid fantasies.

Thank you very much for your assistance. And you don't have to apologize: I'll admit to having done some looking myself...

She'd grab her underwear and put them on at the same time as Cleo dressed herself, not directly looking at Cleo but not explicitly looking away either. As Cleo voiced appreciation for Mizuki's attitude the wolfess smiled even though she also blushed.

I rarely get called sweet, but I'm glad that I haven't offended you. I know that our first meeting wasn't smooth, but I'd like to think of you as a friend.

Once she was once again in her underwear Mizuki looked at the bundle of muddy clothes that she'd normally put on over her underwear. Cleaning all of that was going to take a while, so the wolfess shook her head and sighed.

I didn't bring any spares with me either... Well, that's a concern for another time. Shall we go back to town?

She wasn't in the habit of walking around half-naked, but it wasn't like she was showing anything truly offensive or provocative. She'd just have to put up with the stares until she could clean her clothes or find a suitable replacement.

Mizuki had stopped covering herself sometime during her drying session, though luckily, for most of it she had been too blurred to be able to be seen, as her breathing and slightest adjustments happened so quickly that her body blurred to the naked eye.

However, once the spell ended, Mizuki no longer had that defense and Cleo was treated to one last, unhindered view of the woman's body, making the redhead gawk and stare, before her face filled bright red and she looked away, flustered. Unlike Mizuki, she'd not had the equivalent of taking a few minutes to be able to calm herself down and regain control over her thoughts and feelings.

W-Well of course! I think of us as friends too! It wasn't a smooth first meeting but I can say with confidence that I've had far worse ones.

She paused, before blushing again.

Though I am really sorry for throwing a spear at you whilst you were transformed. I really did think you were just a regular wolf.

Though with that and with Mizuki's suggestion that they had back to town, Cleo nodded.

Sure thing. I think we've done everything we came out here to do for the day, plus a little bit more...

Cleo might be solely focused on the fact that she got to see Mizuki's exposed form, but the wolfess was receiving the same honours from the lancer. If that really was the same body that the detective had on Earth then Mizuki was rather envious, as she'd imagine most females would be. Now that she'd had several minutes to cool her head watching Cleo get rather embarrassed was also kind of cute, even if the wolfess's own cheeks were still burning despite her regained composure.

She raised an eyebrow as the lancer stated that she'd endured worse meetings than the one she'd had with Mizuki. Given how the two had almost come to blows, that was saying something.

Really? I'm sorry to hear that. (She paused as Cleo apologized, then shrugged.) Please don't worry too much about it. Rather, I'm flattered that my transformation was complete enough that you couldn't distinguish between me and a normal wolf.

It wasn't like Mizuki wanted to be a wolf: she liked her current form, a bipedal and fully sapient wolf person. But it still meant that her Metamorph abilities were the real deal.

She rubbed the back of her head as Cleo pointed out that this little outing had developed into a bit more than just training, looking a tad embarrassed before grinning awkwardly.

I guess so, but I don't think it's a bad thing. Maybe we could do this more frequently if you're up for it? With how quickly you're developing your skills I could use all the training I can get to not fall behind, and we can get to know each other better in the process.

Picking up her ball of muddy clothes she tucked them under one arm as she motioned for Cleo to walk with her as she turned away from the forest. They could easily talk while they walked as they started on the journey back to civilization, where hopefully they could get some food and a drink. Usually, Mizuki would hunt her own meals, but she imagined that Cleo would appreciate something prepared by a professional cook.

Ah don't worry about it too much. I've mostly patched things up with that person, so things aren't so hostile between us. And yeah, your transformation really was so similar to the real deal. It also helps that I'd never even had an encounter with Metamorph before, so you were my first time.

And boy, it had been quite the shock, to see a wolf change shape into a fit and attractive woman with wolf ears and a tail. Cleo grinned, though she blushed a little more when Mizuki mentioned that they would do it more frequently, wondering how much of 'it' Mizuki meant. Surely the wolf woman wasn't thinking of the kiss and the bathing when she had said that, so why was Cleo thinking of it.

She'd have to soak her head in some cool water to cool off...

I'd love to make it a more regular thing, yeah. I know you'll probably roll your eyes at it, but I won't ever turn down an opportunity to get some training in and grow my powers some more.

She followed after Mizuki as the woman began walking away from the forest. They had a chance to do some talking whilst they made their way back to town.

And she wouldn't mind getting to know Mizuki better...

That's good. I'm glad the two of you managed to work things out. (Mizuki blinked at Cleo's phrasing, then cleared her throat and moved on.) Uh, yeah, it doesn't seem to be something a lot of people are interested in. Weapons and external magic were more popular before the shutdown, there were only a handful of us who were interested in changing our shape.

She could tell that Cleo's thoughts went to the latter part of their time together rather than the training and the goblin extermination, which made the wolfess blush as well before she coughed again to get the both of them back on track.

Although she couldn't help but smile as Cleo pointed out how she'd never turn down an opportunity to get stronger.

I'll admit that I was pretty confident you wouldn't turn down the offer of more training. I think that our training will mostly refine your skills rather than boost your raw power, but I'll do my best to help you out, and I hope you'll do your best to help me out.

She still thought that Cleo was overdoing it, but that argument had been done to death by this point, and at least if the two of them were working together she could be there in case the lancer ever injured herself in her drive to become stronger.

Add the fact that it would also mean she could spend more time with this female human she was becoming increasingly fond of, and it was a win-win situation, really.

Cleo nodded. She could see Mizuki's point. It was almost unthinkable for Cleo, the idea of her body changing its structure so drastically. It was hard enough to cope with her Evoke form even when she'd essentially taken to merely flashing in and out of it, to prevent it from being able to have a lingering effect on her by maintaining it.

Also she'd kind've gotten the idea from a shonen battle manga that she'd picked up in an attempt to figure out more ways to grow in power and technique, the idea of flicking a transformation on and off for sudden, explosive bursts of power, without experiencing any side effects of drain from the transformation.

I think shape changing is really interesting, to be honest. It wouldn't really have worked well with the stuff I picked, but my own Evoke changes my shape a little bit too, though those changes are way less drastic.

And at least her clothes changed with her. With how much bustier and curvy Evoke made her, her ordinary bodysuit would have torn or exploded outwards.

Well either way, I certainly won't ever say no to training. And I hope I can help you out just like you hope you can help me out.

Four years ago shapeshifting was limited to animal forms to my knowledge. That might be part of why most people didn't find it very appealing... (She frowned as she thought about this.) When you can become an avatar of the sun, I guess turning into a wolf looks tame in comparison. (Opening her menu with a swipe of her hand as she walked she went to the mastery menu and skimmed through the Metamorph description) Now Metamorph allows you to transform into anything as long as you've got another mastery related to what you're transforming into. It's why I have Beast Arts now.

With another swipe of her hand, Mizuki moved to the Evoke mastery in her menu. Since players couldn't share their menus Cleo wouldn't be able to see what the wolfess was doing, although Mizuki hoped that context would fill in those blanks and the detective wouldn't end up asking why she was seemingly swiping empty air.

Evoke didn't really exist back then, but I think Pyromancy and Aeromancy had a similar effect in their Awakened form. Overall, it seems like the developers have made things more versatile and adaptable. (She frowned, then dismissed her menu.) It's a bit disturbing to think about how you're in a world where the rules of physics could change. (A quick shake of her head, and she turned her full attention to Cleo with a smile.) I hope you'll show me your Evoke form at some point. I imagine it's quite impressive.

Evoke, unlike Metamorph, turned the user into an embodiment, representative, avatar, or manifestation of their magic. It wasn't as versatile as Metamorph, but it should be a sight to behold.

With the rain having stopped and the skies breaking up the two of them were greeted by a blue sky as the forest disappeared in the distance behind them. The sun shone down upon them, warming their skin, and making the plains glisten as the droplets that were clinging to the blades of grass reflected and refracted the light. A faint rainbow formed in the skies above as well, and Mizuki inhaled deeply through her nose as her sensitive organ caught that refreshing scent that always filled the air after the rain.

Let's both do our best then. That aside, while the tavern can provide us with a warm meal, but I assume you won't want to drink in this world?

That kind of explanation did kind of make sense, when it was put that way. Surely enough, if back in the day, transformations had been limited to simply animal forms, then it was bound to be less popular, especially now when transformations were far more varied and nearly everybody could have a different form of transformation and be completely unique from one another. And so Cleo could only nod along with Mizuki's explanation, finding nothing there that she really felt the need to comment on or argue against.

Mizuki would understand the player mindset a lot better than the agent herself did, after all...

Though it was clear that Mizuki was flicking through her menu, reading through the descriptions of things and comparing them to what she could recall. It was interesting to know how things had changed, though Mizuki did raise a point that was a little disturbing. Things could be changed so easily that she wondered how anybody got used to anything.

What had the changes been like for those UI-locked people?

Would you like to see my Evoke form now, before we reach the town? Also actually, I wouldn't mind having a drink or two, I suppose. My drink need meter is running low.

Mizuki hadn't really thought about what it must have been like to be in this world during the changes. The fact that the UI-locked Travelers were still around and kicking, and appeared to have experienced those four years just like how everyone else had experienced them on Earth, suggested that there hadn't been anything like a maintenance shutdown. Although that in turn suggested that changes could be implemented in real-time and that they didn't have to worry about glitches?

Those were thoughts Mizuki wasn't having currently, as she was more occupied by Cleo's offer of showing her Evoke form. The wolfess looked surprised before nodding eagerly at the suggestion, her tail swishing from side to side quickly before settling down again.

I'd really like to see it if you're willing to show me. It's not something that existed back then, so it'd be my first time. (She was even more surprised as Cleo admitted that she could go for a drink or two, although she then rubbed the back of her head.) Sorry, I meant an alcoholic drink. If you want to fill up your thirst meter any drink would do, like the water from the stream.

As the two of them made their way back towards civilization they followed the stream. Whether it was Earth or Terrasphere, freshwater meant settlements. Mizuki blinked as she realized she might have just suggested that Cleo just drink from the river.

But I'll pay for both of our drinks once we get to the tavern. Consider it my treat because I was the one who asked you to join me out here.

No..I know what you meant. And, well, I'm saying that I'd like to go and get a drink with you. Even if water would do, that doesn't mean I can't at least try other things. I guess. I don't think it'll hurt too much to replace the water with something alcoholic for just one afternoon.

Though with that said, she had made the offer to show off her Evoke form, so she supposed she would do just that. She focused on that feeling, the feeling of her Arcanamancy, roiling inside of her. She'd always equated the feeling of her arcane magic to the feeling of cement being swirled inside of a cement mixer, ready to be pulled out of the spin cycle and allowed to harden and take form.

And she focused on the image of increasing the speed of the spin cycle, whilst climbing into the mixer and getting covered in cement. It was perhaps something of an odd mental image, but as her vision began to almost swirl, the change began to start.

First to change was her clothing, her bodysuit flaring out and off of her body, forming into a dress as the color lightened to something lilac. Her crimson hair and eyes becoming more of a magenta. Her body became softer, less athletic even though she'd lost no power, bust filling out and curves becoming thicker and more pronounced.

And then the changes stopped and she was left standing there in her Evoke form, dress being caught by the breeze and flowing gracefully.

So uh, what do you think?

Mizuki had genuinely expected Cleo to say no to the offer of alcohol, given that it would be in direct conflict with her desire to focus on doing her job while in Terrasphere. That the detective instead agreed to the suggestion made the wolfess wonder if maybe Cleo was being polite. That said if Cleo was willing to go along with Mizuki's suggestion like that she wasn't going to sabotage herself. Instead, she just nodded.

That sounds reasonable yes. And one advantage of this world is that healing magic can also help undo the effects of poisoning, so as long as you don't go overboard in one sitting you don't have to worry about destroying your liver. (She grimaced as she thought back to a particular event where things had gotten... out of hand.) Of course, as you might expect some people wanted to find out how much they could drink before it became a problem... But a drink or two is completely harmless.

But first Cleo had to show off her Evoke form. Mizuki stopped walking and took several steps to the side so Cleo would have all the space she needed to perform and show off her transformation. The wolfess looked attentively, taking note of how the first change seemed to be in the lancer's clothes rather than her body, turning the sexy bodysuit into a regal and graceful dress that wouldn't have looked out of place at a royal court. She also took note of how Cleo's body type changed a little, as if to match the dress better.

Once the transformation was over Mizuki gave Cleo a thorough look-over, even walking a slow circle around the transformed sorceress.

It's different from what I expected... Rather than turning your body into a manifestation of arcane power it's more like you let your power flow freely and change both your body and your outfit. It's definitely effective, and probably more stable than the alternative.

The two of them had talked about Evoke before, and the various types of Evoke transformations that existed. Clearly Cleo had chosen to not take any risks and ensure that she remained completely in control of herself, and didn't have to worry about any arcane spirits trying to mess with her head.

It suits you well, really. It looks very impressive, too. (She gave an approving nod as her tail wagged behind her. Her mismatched eyes went to the widened curves that Cleo was now showing off for a split second before they returned to Cleo's face) Have you tried to use it in combat yet?

Well, she supposed that if she was going to be drinking with Mizuki, she could probably reverse the damage that alcohol did to her liver or anything like that, though of course people had pushed their ability to drink in this game to the utmost limit and found out the hard way. Cleo figured that she would have been almost disappointed to learn that people hadn't done that, in that event. Not that she was much of an alcohol drinker herself, but she could share a glass or three with a friend. And Mizuki was definitely one of those.

But for now, it was time to show off her Evoke form, which she did, though she blushed at the sight of Mizuki walking around her, feeling the wolf's eyes all over her body, even noticing the adorable way that Mizuki's tail wagged behind her. Was Mizuki happy or excited to be seeing her like that?

It made her weirdly happy...

That's right. Rather than transforming my body into a full manifestation of arcane power, I treat my body more like a conduit for that power. I've never explained it before, but when I'm casting Arcanamancy, I picture cement being shovelled out of a cement mixer and molded into shape. When I use Evoke with my Arcanamancy, I picture myself being thrown into the cement mixer and the cement clinging to me.

She blushed, wondering if Mizuki would find her explanation to be weird or boring, though she nodded when she was asked if she'd used it in combat.

You might not have noticed since it was a chaotic mess, but I used it in the fight against that giant bug monster after it ate the demon. I created that rain of spears that were eating and leeching away at the orb's energy.

Mizuki found Cleo's explanation of how she treated her Arcanamancy interesting. The detective treated the miraculous power of magic as something so mundane inside her head, although the wolfess had to admit that the part where Cleo imagined herself being covered in cement made the metaphor break down a bit.

It's a practical way to handle the magic without letting it control you. It's very like you. (She smiled.) I imagine that the alternative for Evoke would be to imagine yourself as the cement, being shaped by the mould you've created yourself. It's very different from how I use my Nature Magic and Metamorph.

While she'd been trying to keep an eye on Cleo during the fight against the Kurungaar Broodmother, the detective was speaking the truth when she'd described the fight as chaotic. The wolfess nodded in agreement as she thought back to that time.

I see! Seems like it worked pretty well because by the time I got to the orb it was already falling apart. That really was a frantic fight, especially near the end. (She frowned before shaking her head.) I'm glad all of us made it out alive.

Well at the very least, Mizuki approved of her little mental imaging that she used when she was employing the use of her Evoke mastery, though it wasn't as if she needed other people to be approving of the way that she did things. She was far from being a little girl that required everybody else's approval, considering where she was and what she was doing with her life.

That would be the alternative for Evoke, yeah. Though I do prefer my own method of using it, just because I like to maintain that level of ironclad control.

Though when the topic turned to the fight against the big bug thing (Cleo hadn't bothered to remember it's name), the redhead sighed, nodding along to Mizuki's words. They really were all fortunate that they had survived that whole ordeal. She closed her eyes, allowing her Evoke form to crumble apart and drift into the wind.

Yeah. It really was a pretty horrible time. I saw you take out the orb though. It was pretty awesome to see.

Understandable. Personally I'm more into embracing the changes that Metamorph brings, but I can imagine that you'd rather keep a tight grip on your magic. (She cocked her head.) Especially since your transformation contains a lot more raw power.

Evoke was an expression of the pinnacle of magical might, so compared to Mizuki's shapeshifting Cleo's transformation required her to retain control over a lot of raw arcane power. It was pretty impressive, all things considered.

The wolfess grinned as Cleo complimented how she'd taken care of the orb, her tail giving a short wag behind her.

Thank you, but I only took care of what remained after you and the others had done most of the work already. (She looked at her hands briefly.) But it was good to finally see that thing die. I just wish it had been edible, but I'm not reckless enough to try eating something demon-tainted.

The path to the nearest settlement was pretty long, and the two of them weren't hurrying either. Nevertheless, as they followed the river the forest disappeared into the distance, and with the clouds having broken up they could enjoy the sunlight.

Mizuki frowned as she considered the consequences of that expedition, then slowly spoke up.

I imagine that facing that thing didn't improve your opinion on this world.

You're not wrong. It's incredibly hard to contain as much power as Evoke affords, so much that sometimes that raw power just kind of seaps out and zaps and saps at things. Sometimes it can be useful, like if I'm making a bunch of spears that I want to sap away at something's energy or something. I can just overload a spear when I make it and the energy will spark and pulse off of it.

She'd actually done that when attacking the giant orb that the big bug monster had created, allowing the raw arcane energy of her projected spears to lick and sap at the orb, breaking it apart whilst also draining away some of the energy from it.

The idea of eating the bug monster, especially after it had been tainted by demons, made Cleo feel queasy, almost turning a nice shade of puke green at the thought, shaking her head and shuddering at the phantom sensation of whatever the flesh would feel like going down her throat.

Yeah, I can't really foresee a world in which eating the flesh of that awful thing would make sense or end well. I imagine that demons and people don't exactly mix in a graceful manner, so to speak.

As for whether it had improved her opinion of the world, Cleo shook her head. Far from it, really.

It certainly didn't do this world many favors. A lot of people died, or have been traumatized. This world definitely does have some charms though. And some charming people in it.
