"I can understand that."

Failure, in general, was something that almost all people struggled with. Not only because of the way that society rained people, but from a biological standpoint as well. In the distant past, failure of any kind likely meant death, thus, those who lived passed on genes that eventually mutated in a way, that encouraged not making such mistakes.

But the meaning of failure had transformed over the ages, and it no longer meant what it used to all that time ago. Especially in a place like this, a game with seemingly endless possibilities. Here, one person's failure truly could have always been another person's victory, and not only in the malicious, competitive sort of sense.

"That would be nice. Even if predatory animals usually do not approach the manastones, it is still quite a risk to leave one's body near one while logging out. I'd prefer to assume the best of people's intentions, but... well, it would be rather easy to do anything you want with an unresponsive magia you find lying around."

Well, Luna hadn't been thinking of things like that, but now that MAI had raised the possibility, she couldn't not think about it. If MAI had been logged out, rather than just resting, it would have been easy to do whatever she wanted to the girl. She could have killed her, or robbed her blind, or do any manner of evil and MAI would have been totally incapable of stopping that kind of thing.

Maybe looking into ways to make their recharging and offline time more secure was a pretty worthwhile endeavor after all? Ordinary players of other races could just log off in some kind of secure inn room or something along those lines, if they were determined to leave their body there at all.

Magia didn't really have that same luxury, did they?

With a slightly concerned face, Luna nodded.

I hadn't really thought of that. I probably should start working on ways to make it safer for Magia to log off whilst leaving their body behind to recharge. It sounds like being a Magia can be nothing but a pain, personally speaking. What made you decide to pick the robot race when you were making your character, anyway?

"Well, it's not like it's only disadvantages for us. Magia generally absorb mana from their surroundings, even if there are no large sources like this manastone. So a magia can recharge anywhere in the world, even a secured room. It will simply take longer, so doing that requires more planning around one's energy."

It almost seemed like sleeping on a bad bed. Being near a manastone was like having a good, comfy bed that helped the person fall asleep quick and get adequate sleep. Remaining elsewhere was more like sleeping on the ground, ensuring that one woke up still a bit tired and feeling slightly beat up.

"Mm, I suppose it was the most unique choice? The other races were pretty common to what you'd see in other fantasy games, but machine people?"

It was an extremely unusual choice, maybe even a bit out of place. And when she was starting, MAI wasn't even sure if she would stay in this world for long. Things did end up going in that direction, of course, but the choice of a race just didn't seem all that important at the time.

Wait, if Magia COULD rest anywhere and gain energy that way, then what really made the Magia that much different to other races? Well, MAI had said that it took longer, though not how much longer, so Luna wasn't sure about all of that. If it took, like, double the amount of time that a regular player would need to rest, then she could agree that it probably wasn't worth it to rest somewhere away from a Manastone if there weren't any sources of mana nearby.

The most unique choice was an interesting reason to pick such a race, though. Luna herself certainly hadn't been adventurous when she'd made her character, initially. Sure, she'd tried to make her human character as interesting as possible, but she'd still been a human.

Now with a felis body after the reboot or whatever had happened, she wondered if maybe she'd have had even more fun back in the day if she had played as something else? If only it were possible to choose to change a race.

I guess that makes sense. Most games either don't have machine people, or make machine people the bad guys. I haven't seen anything to suggest that they're the bad guys here, though.

Though, granted, there was something she felt like she HAD to ask, now. She couldn't stop thinking about it.

So uh, since you brought it up, has anybody ever done anything to you when you've been resting? Attacked or robbed you or anything?

"Not unless you go near Vintergard, I suppose."

MAI kinda blurred that one out as she was resting, her mind quickly drifting to that place. Naturally, she was rather drawn to it. As far as she understood, it was a place that oozed with magitech and Lander magia, but all of them were hostile to all forms of life. That made the exploration of the fallen dragonship practically impossible, even for a group of seasoned adventurers. And MAI was hardly part of one.

Still, she hoped that tensions in that region would eventually lower. She had never seen any other magia not controlled by players outside of there, yet she had so many questions she would ask one. Perhaps the chance would present itself one day.

"Not that I know of. Magitech was my very first focus, and I managed to tap into automated defenses fairly early on. In that way, I am personally safer than most, even when leaving my body out in the open. Some of my drones remain active and will defend me if the need arises."
