Somewhere in the depths of the jungle...

Ugh. You can definitely tell those myconids were here. This place reeks.

Ash covered his mouth and nose with a grimace. There were plenty of unpleasant smells in the jungle, ones that would have bothered him even without the enhanced sense of a caenis. But the fungal smell seemed to overwhelm them all, like opening a container of food that had gone horribly moldy... or the myconid arm he'd been forced to eat after he'd lost his duel.

Ugh.

The job to drive them back seemed like it wouldn't be too bad, at least. Especially with @Hanno Futaba and @Harveste taking the same bounty. He'd seen Hanno in action, at least, and while he didn't really know Harveste, it seemed like the two of them knew each other. That was enough for him. And it wasn't like they hadn't fought myconids before. They at least had a good idea of what they were capable of...

The MIT seemed really interested in these myconids. Something about them being "scientifically significant", whatever that means...

He had barely opened his mouth when the sound of squawking birds filled the air. The snaping of breaking branches and rapid thumping of heavy footsteps grew louder as something charged their way.

Something's com-!

A enormous mass erupted from the shadows, charging Ash's way. He drew his sword and put up his guard, but it didn't stop him from being knocked back by the creature's charge. He backed off as the Myconid Caval drew itself to its full height - a hulking mass of barely-humanoid mushroom, staring at them with an assortment of disturbingly humanoid eyes.

Shkaaaaaaa...

The smell of rot grew stronger as it stomped fowards, eyes rolling independently to watch everyone in the party. It had found its quarry, and it wouldn't give up until they were all food for the mushrooms themselves!

"Hya!" The small Faerin shouted, throwing the strongest punch she could muster at the peculiar mushroom creature. She'd joined forces unexpectedly with someone she knew and someone she didn't- but two allies didn't mean she should have been as reckless to attack as she was. Still, she had rushed straight into the danger zone, getting up close and personal with their enemy.

When it hit her shortly after her harsh impact, she was flung back to the ground with great force. Harveste couldn't help wincing as she struggled back to her feet, legs shaking slightly as she'd gotten a bit timid from the impact. Maybe she shouldn't have put her all into that one attack? She was a little dizzy- but she blamed that on the intense smell of rot clogging up her nose.

"I think this is a sign I really, really need a scarf of my own..." She muttered, glancing to her allies with a toothy grin. "I think we've got this in the bag, don't you? It was a lot easier than I thought though... Almost too easy..."

"Hella you sure do." He scowled, trying to tug his scarf closer to his nose, holding back a cough while he marched along with Ash and Harveste.

"Couldn't they be interested on something slightly more appealing?" Hanno asked to Ash, mostly playfully before an enemy suddenly appeared in an ambush, attacking the three of them without restraint.

Ash and Harveste acted first, and Hanno quickly forced his protective aura to give the three of them more stability, then shifting to hold Harveste that was knocked toward the ground, trying to hold her before she fell with her head on the ground and helping her to stand on her feet while shielding her with his aegis.

"I will get one for you-" Hanno muttered to Harveste, raising his shield and focusing on creating wide divine protection for Ash and Harveste, surrounding them with a shimmering holy shield while Hanno forced and trampled his way toward the myconid aberration.

Gritting his teeth, he tried to endure pain and smell, both of them being nearly unbearable, but hopefully, that would open more space for the two of them to attack the creature.

For all it's menace, the Myconid fell quickly before the group's combined attack. The creature fell with a final hiss, spores settling around it and eyes growing glassy.

Still, they seemed to follow the others as they moved. Unsettling...

Ash panted a few times, covering his nose as he slowly approached the Myconid lying still on the ground. It twitched slightly as he poked it with the tip of his sword, resulting him him jumping back a foot as his fur bristled.

It's... it's dead, right?

There was, of course, no answer from the myconid. Ash took a deep breath and flattened down his hair. The air still reeked - if there was anything else around them, there was no way he'd smell it past the one in front of them.

Thanks for the protection, Hanno. I probably should have been prepared for it to jump me like that...

That went down way faster than I expected... you two certainly know how to work together. I kind of thought these would be stronger. I guess they're just scouts after all.

He sheathed his sword, eyes fixed on the twitching corpse. The idea of dragging it back to the camp wasn't a pleasant one.

...should we keep going? If they're this easy to take down, it might be worth thinning the herd...

Harveste watched it twitch with a wince. She had a hunch it was dead by the lack of vitality in its throes. Dead nature never sat well with her really, even when it was a monstrous piece of it- but it was still necessary for things to die, and she knew that. She let out a deep sigh, struggling to contain the reality of it all. At least the three were safe, for now.

The girl soon laughed, however, ever so slightly. "I don't know if it was teamwork as much as me making more work for him in the long run, though." She did know she tended to act a bit recklessly at times. She didn't think she needed to say any examples out loud, luckily.

"That said, everyone did a great job. It really is a lot easier with three people... So, I think it'd be fine to thin the herd a bit more if everyone's feeling up to it." Besides, if it did get dangerous, she could use the vitality of the local flora to help heal them. She had the energy for it. "What do you think, Hanno?"

Breathing a sigh, Hanno blinked twice and squinted at the body of the creature, seemingly completely still, perhaps it was actually dead, but one could never be sure with those things. "I... Guess..?" He rose his eyebrow, deciding to poke the dead creature with his shield before nodding. "Yep. Dead." He glanced back at Ash with a grin.

"Can't blame you, buddy. The Myconids we fought back then were weaker than this one. If anything, these are tough as hell in comparison, though they are still just mushrooms and fungi, so getting them dead is pretty quick." He said, then averting his eyes while his wings fluttered, noticing some alternation in the local mana. There were plenty more of those things around.

"Sounds like a plan to me. We can kick another one, but you gotta be more careful, Harveste." Hanno said, looking at the other faerin with a concerned expression. "That thing is fragile, but it hits very hard." He crossed his arms.

Ash nodded, letting his attention drift away from the myconid and back to the two faerin. It was... a little odd, being the tallest in the group, especially by such a great gulf. He knew they weren't children, but it didn't stop some part of his brain from trying to parse them that way.

That, and it made his neck sore to look down all the time. But god forbid he make the mistake of kneeling down to talk to them like a child.

Well, sometimes the best defense is a good offense... but it does feel a bit like we overdid it, that time. Then again, I'd rather overdo it than under-do it.

Ash briefly considered undoing the tie that was part of his standard outfit to wrap around his face. But then he'd have to re-tie it, and he still hadn't figured that out. Tolerating the mushroom stink it was, he supposed. He kept his hand over his nose as he turned to Hanno, then tilted his head as he finally noticed the shimmering wings on his back. How had he missed those...?

By the way, Hanno... when did you get the...

Uh...

Behind Hanno, the corpse of the Myconid began to ripple. It rose - or really, it grew, a mass rising from the body like a mushroom stalk growing in fast-forward. Eyes began to open in the surface as it thickened and grew, arms growing in haphazard locations, mouths ripping open with spore-laden groans...

Behind you!

Ash reacted without thinking, dashing forward and drawing his sword in one motion. His sword sliced through one half-formed arm that was swinging towards Hanno, sending it flying over his head and slamming into the ground. The myconid had plenty of arms to spare, though, and a second one bashed into Ash and knocked him several feet into a nearby tree.

As if unphased by the attack, the myconid continued to grow, a thick cloud of spores began to pour from its many mouths...

The slash from Ash was sudden, and Hanno nearly stumbled to the side in surprise, soon noticing the much bigger and stronger myconid that appeared from its hidings.

"W-Woah, thanks buddy-" He said, feeling grateful for Ash's quick reaction that saved him from being caught by the amorphous creature.

It, however, didn't hesitate to charge forward, clearly going all out to try and devour his friends. The deadly spores escaped from its skin, and Hanno charged forth, holding his shield forward and bashing it against the creature, frowning and coughing at the noxious cloud that engulfed him.

He clenched his feet firmly on the ground, yelling- "Ghast! Eat all of it!" He called, and the shield, now awakened from the combat, opened several small mouths on its surface, sucking the cloud into it before closing and leaving most of the air safe for the others.

The creature forced its way toward Hanno's shield, managing to push the faerin knight a foot from where he stood, but he wasn't going to allow it-

❰ Heroic Desire ❱

Hanno gritted his teeth, roaring and forcing his mighty aura and strength against the creature and trying to hold most of it back, hoping to open more room for his allies to attack the creature without fearing its retaliation.

While he held the creature back, his shield closed its huge central eye, rumbling menacingly before the eyelid opened once again, with a wide and fierce mouth taking its place. The tentacles of the shield wrapped around the monster Hanno struggled against, starting to bite pieces of it, devouring the creature and giving it a crushing squeeze.

While @Ash Vargold, @Hanno Futaba and @Harveste were engaged in battle, a drawn-out cry came from the sky. Had any of the names above look up, they would have seen the green hedgehog blitzed downward out of nowhere as though he had been retroactively placed in the right thread at the right time by an ever-omnipotent hand.

W-woaaaaaaaah! W-where am I? When did I get here? Why am I falling? Who are you guys? And what in the bloody baguette is that thing with the eye and the many mouths?! I guess I don't have a choice, do I? Zahaad, it's time to go!!!

Quinn shouted as the retrieved a golden lamp hanging from his hip and furiously rubbed a genie out of the lamp spout.

Within seconds, a blue-skinned hunk of musculature appeared in the air, following the downward momentum of the lamp and its holder. When the seemingly sleeping djinn opened his eyes and trailed his eyes from Quinn to the rampaging myconid, he instantly poofed into thin air and reappeared at Ash's side where he slapped another stray limb coming for the caenis.

Your vulgar form offends me. BEGONE RETCH!

His coordinated attack temporarily repelled the myconid long enough for Hanno to jump in with his shield.

Quinn meanwhile divebombed the grotesque fungus with his knee before somersaulting out of the range of the deadly cloud.

Hey, this is a pretty weird situation, but cavalry has arrived. I'm going to get you guys outa murky water, we can talk after about why I'm here, yeah? (He readied a fighting stance).

She gasped as Ash called out to be careful, turning to see the Myconid coming back to life with a vengeance. Her eyes widened slightly, a grimace on her face. What was with all these messed up fungi anyway!?

Then, in the heat of the moment, she found herself being protected again- but at what cost? Hanno was clearly going to tire himself out at this rate. She could see that easily enough, with or without access to his health status. Taking a deep breath, she tried to calm herself enough to sing.

And sing she did.

A surprisingly pleasant melody left her lips, as she harnessed the nature around her. The smell of flora and fungi alike invaded her nose more strongly than the rotting and decay. With her song, a greenish tint surrounded and imbued itself in Hanno's body. His health would rise at least a bit. It was all she could really do at the time.

As she was finishing her song, she noticed a stranger in their midst. She couldn't remember if he was familiar or not, but an extra ally wouldn't hurt against a foe this large. But, while paying heed to the new hero in their midst, Harveste was attacked by the peculiar mushroom monster. Hanno's protection was the only thing keeping it from hitting hard.

"Something tells me I won't be wanting to eat mushrooms for a while."

Gkh... hrh... intruders...

The Caval's stalk swayed as mouths chattered and limbs swung about. More than a few of them seemed occupied with trying to pry the hungry Ghast away. Others battered against Hanno's protective aura, intent on finding a weak point.

Ash stumbled back as Quinn suddenly dropped next to him. It was fortunate the man was there to keep the myconid from taking advantage of his distraction, but... where had he come from?

Explanations could wait. For now, he wasn't going to look a gift horse in the mouth.

Thanks for the assist! That thing was a myconid scout, before. We killed it, but then it grew back even worse.

Ash opened his UI, checking the party information. Hanno was low, even with Harveste's heal. Trying to outpace damage would only go so far. They had backup now, but it would only take a moment of bad luck to fall behind. Which meant that killing it before it killed them was the best route to take.

He glanced at his own health bar. It was still fine, especially with Hanno's efforts to protect him. He could afford a few hits, if he was doing the math right. He'd played enough games to know one important truth: health was a resource. And if he was going to make any headway in his new "job", he was going to have to make use of that resource.

I'm going to regret this.

Spirits, heed my call!

The world went fuzzy as the spirits around him drew from his EN and faded into view. Hands grasped at his as he attacked, giving each swing of his flurry of slashes extra force. Choking spores spewed from each wound and new limbs struck took advantage of the openings he left. Soon he had to retreat, hacking in an attempt to clear his lungs.

*kaff, kaff* Damnit, it just keeps spewing more of those spores...

"I am not- Grrh!" Hanno tried to force his way against the monster. "Gonna complain- Aaarh!" He kneeled the creature, but it kept fighting back, with what seemed to be Hanno's successful grapple turning into a wrestling between him and the myconid.

"- About reinforcement-!" He finished his sentence to @Quinn, breathing a sigh and feeling his energy recovering thanks to Harveste.

He managed to fight back a bit further, but after the strong blow from @Ash Vargold, the creature wanted revenge, and it eas ruthless about it, sending spores and all of its weight on Hanno, making the faerin stumble.

"That's gettin' hella tough, not gonna lie!" Hanno gritted his teeth, throwing a punch after another on the creature that now had a firm grip on him. Every punch was met with a relentless surface, not exactly feeling like a proper hit.

The failure had a price, and that was the excruciating pain the faerin felt when his arms and sides were caught by the mouths of the fungal aberration.

A long groan of pain slipped, and while Hanno struggled, a familiar divine warmth began overtaking him.

Hanno's eyes widened, with the central ring of his iris glowing intensely while his wounds began regenerating rapidly, outpacing the wounds that the mincing fangs of the myconid were causing. His stomach throbbed in exchange, but for now he managed to stand fighting.

-65 -130 HP from Retal (Vulnerable)

When Quinn overheard @Harveste, he replied.

You should try my cooking, nothing beats the umami of a myconid!

When the green hedgehog saw @Hanno Futaba struggled against the vicious fungus and the fact that the faerin's HP bar dipped below zero for a second, he turned to the hulking Zahaad.

Z, let's do the pincer attack we've been practicing. Just get in, pow-pow, and then get out before the cloud choke us to death.

BWAHAHA! Quinn, must I remind you that being choked to death by a deadly spore cloud is a human problem? Such things do not affect djinns!

You don't have to be annoying about it, you know?

The djinn let out another laugh before he was blasted with a spore cloud from Hanno's struggle, which soured the bemused expression on his face.

Hideous cretin, you dare to distract the great Zahaad from his entertainment? Your insolence will not go unpunished!!!

Immediately after @Ash Vargold attacked and dashed away, Quinn and the blue hulk appeared from behind Hanno, sandwiching the myconid in a flurry of fists.

ORA-ORA-ORA-ORA-ORA

ORA-ORA-ORA-ORA-ORA

As if they were in-sync, both the ninja and his genie threw a punch that connected at the same time, producing enough impact to throw Quinn into a rocky hill 30-feet away, which took him out of the zone of danger as the myconid exploded like a piñata full of toxic spores.

Zahaad winced in disgust as he produced an ornate handkerchief out of thin air, which he used to wipe the spore off of his uncovered upper-half.

Do you need a hand from the greatest of djinns, Zahaadragan?

He asked the faerin who had been detonated on while leaving Quinn buried in the rocks.

Spore Cloud EX. After attacking this enemy, make a Expertise Check (Fitness or Knack - 55) to physically build some distance between your team and the Caval to avoid the myconid dispersing a cloud of spores upon being hit, which will hinder your team. The person posting after a failed spore cloud check takes an extra 30 damage and reduce their main action roll result by 30.

"Is it actually dead this time?" The smaller Faerin asked, walking towards the corpse and picking up a stick. Kneeling down near it, she hummed a song while poking it with the stick she'd picked up, then let out a sigh of relief. It hadn't reacted to her song. It had no vitality left. And, most of all, it didn't wriggle when poked.

A sigh left her lips. "It's all good. It's dead now..." Wandering towards the rocky hill a bit, she let herself punch one of the rocks with a fair amount of strength to unbury Quinn. When she broke the rocks enough to see him, she smiled a bit brighter. "Are you alright? That looked like quite the flight."

With everyone in view of her and in range, Harveste sang a soothing song, which called upon vines that wrapped around the three men and melted into energy that entered their bodies. "That should help everyone feel a little more energetic. So now, I just have one question... What do we do with the big guy? Drag it? Put it in the inventory dimension?"

There was nothing for Ash to do in the end but watch as Quinn summoned his djinn and went to down on the myconid, punching it into oblivion in a flashy and very familiar manner. He coughed as the smell of rot increased, but these spores seemed harmless compared to the stinging ones of before.

If it survived that, then the whole camp is doomed.

Harveste seemed to have Quinn handled, and Hanno was being helped by the other man's spirit, so he approached the remaining pile of mushroom. With a few hand motions he turned on Investigation mode. His attention flicked between each bit of information it offered.

...yeah, it's definitely dead. Fungal piece of shit...

Ash kicked the mushroom with a little more force that he needed to. A cloud of spores puffed into the air in response.

I think I can make some space in my inventory to carry this back... let me check, though. I haven't really cleaned it up since I started playing the first time...

He stepped away from the mushroom and began to go through his menu. He had... quite a bit of garbage, actually. He began to mutter as he swiped through, looking for things to dispose of.

Why do I have so many grimoires in here...?

With the overwhelming blows of the reinforcement guy, Hanno could feel the weight on top of him finally easing, allowing him to have some breathing room despite all the pain that was making his muscles throb.

A brief sigh escaped from his lips, and he blinked looking up at the big djinn that was offering help, genuinely surprising the faerin that widened his eyes. "Oh- Uh, sure Zahaadragan, buddy. Thanks!" He winced, reaching for the Djinn's hand if he was actually going to offer it, finally getting on his feet while limping, feeling the warmth of Harveste's song soothing his pain.

Straightening his posture, Hanno took a deep breath and looked around. "For Rhiannon... That hurt a lot. These guys are crazy-" His stomach rumbled loudly. "Grrhuh-" He held his stomach, frowning his lips.

"Th-Thank you guys for helping us out. That would've been pretty tough without extra hands to fight it off..." Hanno smirked, trying to keep a good expression but soon the stomach implored him to eat it.

Hanno cast a glance at the piece of the myconid that Ash had sliced off with his blade, averting his eyes from the others and pursing his lips before reaching for the piece.

"I... Hate this..." He scowled, imbuing some divine magic on the raw 'meat', something he knew that at least made the taste a bit more comforting. Then, he took a bite of it, frowning in disgust. Raw meat was a nice touch depending on the cuisine, but raw raw meat was something entirely different-

Had it not been for Harveste soothing song, Quinn would have passed out from being clonk on the head by a medium-sized rock that had been waiting for him to recover from crashing into the pile. With some of his health restored, the green hedgehog picked himself up from the rubbles as he shook off the dusts and pebbles clinging to him. After rolled his neck and limbs to give them a satisfying crunch, Quinn headed back to the rest of the group, throwing a hand up to express his appreciation for the faerin's song.

Thanks for the heal, stranger!

Meanwhile, Zahaad followed through with his hand pulling the heavy faerin up to his feet before he walked over to the myconid corpse, studying it alongside the caenis.

What an obscene sight. DIVIDE!

The djinn issued a vocal command and upon snapping his fingers the myconid corpse truncated itself into smaller and more manageable packages.

Quinn came a few seconds later and leaned down to inspect a piece of the shroom.

Ouch-ouch-ouch! I really shouldn't lean down like that...

When he grabbed one of the mushroom chunk, he turned his attention to the rest of the group.

I'm not sure how I got here, but am glad to be of service. I run a delivery service back in Astorea so I'm sure you guys will see me again. Until then, adios amigos!

If it were me, I would hurry out of this land as quickly as I am able. There are waves of disturbing magic here that would give even the great Zahaadragan goosebumps...

The two men waved to the rest of the group as they made their departure.

The little Faerin gave Quinn a simple smile, wrapping her arms behind her back and holding her hands out of view. She had to keep her neck upward pretty notably to see him, though. Why was she meeting so many giants? Oh, wait, no... She was just smaller than normal for anyone.

"It was my pleasure. I'm just glad you're okay... In fact, I think I'm just glad we all survived. We're lucky you showed up when you did! That was a tough fight with the four of us, so imagine if it was just us three~!"

With Quinn soon departing, Harveste walked over to the neatly sliced up Myconid. She began to take a few pieces and put them in her inventory. "Well, I guess that's the end of the bounty. I hope you don't mind, but I'm going to go on ahead. This fight gave me a great idea, so I want to turn this stuff in and log out to get some writing done."

Running ahead back the way they came, she turned and waved with a smile. "It was nice meeting you, Ash! And it was fun getting to work with you again, Hanno! Let's do something more fun next time!" And with her words spent and her mind spinning, she ran off to turn in her bounties, leaving the two remaining men alone.

Ash seemed too confused to react as Hanno grabbed the chunk of mushroom and... ate it. He couldn't help but recoil a bit - he knew exactly how it tasted, and the memory alone was enough to make his stomach twist.

I heard about some Faerin needing to eat strange things, but I wasn't sure I believed it until now...

He shook his head, then made a motion with his hand - as he did, a number of items manifested next to him and dropped to the ground. A small pile of vaguely magical books, chipped swords, and old tunics soon lay on the jungle floor, and Ash began to store chunks of myconid into his inventory.

I think this should be enough to keep the MIT happy. Especially the bits with the eyeballs and mouths.

It's lucky we had a dedicated healer and the extra help, yeesh. Looks like you're okay after all that, but...

Ash shook his head with a sigh. It just demonstrated that he was still pretty far behind... and that even if he got stronger, it didn't mean much if they got unlucky.

...well, guess we should get out of here before something else shows up.

I've got some cheap alcohol if you want something to clean your mouth out after you finish with that. It's pretty shitty, but it's still better than the taste of myconid...

Satisfied that he'd shoved enough interesting pieces into his inventory, he waited for Hanno to catch up before he followed the path of the others out of the jungle.
