There were many wonders and mysteries regarding Terrasphere. Like the existence of Schrödinger's ice cream, the UI lock, how Kit and Kat could tell each other apart, and so on. Of course, each fantasy wonderland also had its fair share of unique monstrosities. Thus, it was only common sense that when Kat suggested going look for a (petting) Zoo, that they would find one.

"See, Kit!" Kat pointed at the archway that marked the entrance into a walled-off area full of trees, greenery, and other things that looked anything but pathway:

FINWEALD ANIMAL SANCTUARY
Natural Reserve — treat with care

"This is just like a zoo! With all the wonderful and special animals in one place for us to look at." And also touch! While the name did not quite spell 'Zoo', Kat at least didn't seem to mind. Maybe it was a cultural difference? Different states and all such. "Do you have a favorite animal, Kit?" Kat asked her as she, overly excited, dragged her along closer to the entrance. Chuckling, she added. "Of course you do! The same as mine, right, Kit?"

She gave Kit that look, the one where they both said whatever their favorite thing of shenanigan was, and proceeded then to squeal about twinship and all!

Was this, potentially, Kit's last chance to stop Kat?!

No. No! NO!

Kit had insisted time and time again that there was no way a petting zoo, of all things, existed in this game! And she'd turned out to be 100% right. This "Animal Sanctuary" hadn't changed that fact; if anything, it only legitimized her claim! In fact, right up to the moment Kat had dragged her straight to the entrance, Kit was certain she'd soon realize the difference and back away for the lair of deadly fantasy creatures.

... Clearly, she did not.

And yet, she couldn't deny her sister! They had to be the best twins possible! If Kat liked animals, then Kit had to learn to like animals too, or they would soon grow apart, and their twinship would die! And then Kit would die! She wasn't sure how yet, but it would definitely happen! And so, with this in mind, she swallowed her terror, smiled along with Kat, and giggled as she gave the only answer that seemed to make sense...

"Only all of them~!" ... Roasted on a skewer!

"But don't you think some of the ones in this game might be a little... dangerous?" she continued to protest as Kat pulled her forward by the hand.

"Of course!" Kat answered Kit's question about the creatures in this game being dangerous with 100% assurance and no hesitation!

"But, we're in the middle of a big city AND can protect ourselves now!" It seemed like whatever dangers Kat thought could happen, she was willing to take. "And, besides, if you're genuine and show an animal how you truly feel-" Which, by her standards could be nothing but joy. "-it'll open up to you in no time! I'm sure it'll be fun." With these words, Kat dragged Kit further inside the greenery...

"Hmm..." The two would find themselves in a half-overgrown jungle, having to push away twigs and leaves left and right to get anywhere as Kat was the one taking the lead. Of course, being two foreign (metallic) objects in a relatively peaceful green space meant that most animals that heard them would quickly run away!

Except...

Oink oink

"Ohmahgosh Kit, do you see that? Do you see that!?" Kit eyes sparkled as she pointed at three little baby... piglets? No... they were more like puppies, with rugged skin, making baby-boar noises. One was stripped like a zebra. The other had the skin texture of a giraffe, and the third was barely visible as its green fur made it somewhat blend in with its surrounding.

Oink oink

"Are they looking for their mommy? They're so cute!" And dirty. "And fluffy!"

"I-I guess…" Kit echoed the sentiment. Sure, they had their giant hammers, and most importantly each other, but that didn’t make them invincible, especially where video game beasties were concerned. Video games took things to a whole different level.

By far the worst part of traversing this disgusting, nature-y jungle, besides her many more obvious disgusts for it, was the fact that the thick brush made it difficult to travel side by side. Instead, they kinda had to travel single file, which was objectively less twin-friendly! Naturally, Kat was first, while Kit was left to smack the trees away, even hissing back at them a few times.

She hated nature so much.

And thinking of, there were even more things to hate! Stupid, muddy beasts that were just asking to become bacon. No way Kat actually intended to touch them, was sh— oh. Nope, she absolutely was. Why…!?

"Y-yeah…" Kit nodded, visibly uncomfortable as she slowly inched forward after Kat. "So… so cute…" she forced a… well, it was mostly a grimace, really. A beat of sweat formed on the side of her head. "Good uhm… pig thing. Anyway! We saw them now, so…"

"Yes, we saw them!" Kat, who was completely absorbed by the possibility of fluffing cute animals, didn't really notice her sister's struggles. Or maybe Kit was just such a good actor! "So now..." Without a word, Kat got closer to three puppies... piglets? Puplets? Pigpies?

Grabbing the giraffe-textured one, she lifted it up and brushed and started brushing her cheek against it. Cuddling it and all. "Kit! It just feels... so real! This is, like, wow! Amazing. I can't believe that a game can be like... like this!" The three Puplets didn't seem to really understand the danger of human, or in this case Magia, presence.

Instead, curiosity seemed to be the bigger drive, as Kit suddenly noticed something on her leg tugging. The Cammopigpie was brushing its body against her small frame! Pig? Dog? Now cat? It was likely that not even the creator of this place knew!

"Awwwwhhhh, he likes you!" Kat reacted to this display. "You see, unlike humans, animals don't hide their emotions and intentions. That's why they're so wonderful!" Kat gave Kit an encouraging nod. "Do you wanna lift it up, or want to take mine?"

No, Kat, no! Whyyyyy!?

"Ahahahahaha~! Yes!" Kit laughed, her eye twitching slightly. "It certainly is… realistic…" including the pain when these vicious little wads of meat made their attack!

"Yeep!"

One touched her leg! The first attack! Soon enough it was be chewing her to bits and gnawing on her bones! Instinctively, Kit raised her hammer, ready to smash down. You see, unlike humans, Kit didn’t hide her emotions either! But then Kat‘s voice cut in, explaining the situation. Or rather, what she thought of the situation. So naive. Still, Kit lowered the hammer slightly, gulping.

"R-right! He’s s-so affectionate~!" Kit’s fake smile continued, and she found herself shaking as she slowly bent down to awkwardly pick up the creature. Unlike Kat, Kit held it at a distance, "appreciating it" from arm’s length.

"These are… so cute… and… uhm… animal-y." There was a slightly pleasing visual component to the creature’s round little eyes she suppos— ACK, IT SQUEALED!! Kit‘s arms sprang away from it like loaded springs, letting the little creature fall back onto the soft ground. Thankfully, it wasn’t too hurt, given how short the carrier were.

"!!!"

Kit let the puplet fall.
Kit, absolutely, totally, dropped the pigpie to the ground.
Kit was completely flabbergasted, and cast the cute little animal to its doom.

For just a split second, Kat's eyes were full of judgment, and betrayal. How could she dare? How DID she dare? For a moment, Kat's love for animals was stronger than her desire for twinship.

And then, Kat felt devastated. How did SHE dare? To have such thoughts? Such doubts? Such... bad feelings!? Animals were temporary, but Magia forever! Their twinship was to be in all eternity! And, for just a moment, Kat had it all thrown away? For what? Some super cute fluffy little animal that was just sooo c- no. Stop! Kat had still time to save her soul. To make it better. Kit clearly wasn't too accustomed to handling animals, yet. But that was why Kat was here. To have her back. To support her twin in times of need.

The mid-twin crisis (that would just be one of many) Kat just went through had maybe felt like minutes for her, but ultimately, just a few seconds passed.

Yes. Kat's desire for twinship was stronger than the well-being of some dumb pig...dogs! It had to be! Thus...

Much like Kit, Kat's arms suddenly sprang away from her, for no apparent reason at all. Oink! Dropping the piglet on the ground just a little bit more forceful than what Kit had done. "Ooops! Tehehe..." A simple move. But it had meant so much more.

"They're quite wild. Right, Kit?"

Their eternal twinship was saved.
The animals were fine, probably.

Kit gulped as she caught sight of a FLAMING SUN in her twin sister’s eyes. It burnt a hole in her retinas and made her instinctively die inside, overwhelmed by the righteous flame directed at her careless act. And yet, as quickly as it had come, it vanished, for… some reason. And what followed was not only unexpected, but incredible!

Kat dropped it too! There was no way that was a normal accident right? She’d done it for them? Either that or they‘d come that far as twins! Whichever turned out to be the truth, it was incredibly good news!

Happy tears welled up in Kit’s eyes as she nodded, "Right Kat~!!" She leapt forward, embracing Kat in a tight hug. "So hard to keep hold of…!"

That pained squealing was normal, right? Animals always made those sorts of noises, so it had to be. Definitely. Though, now Kat smelled of animal. Eww… She’d have to insist on some sort of bath right away.

"I-I'm sure they'll be fine." Kat hugged Kit tightly back, the warmth of the other Magia soothing the stinging pain of possibly having crippled one, or two, cute little animals for the rest of their life. It... really hurt actually! But it was just a game... right?

What the two twins did not anticipate, however, was a reply to the slightly upset squealing of the small critters, they weren't made out of paper!

Oink Oink
Oink.
Oink.

"Did you hear that, Kit?" Kat asked as a deeper oink joined the oinking of the little puplets.

Oink!!!

Behind the foliage and greenery of the small clearing they were standing in, another puplet appeared. Just that this one wasn't small. But big. Not a baby. But an adult. Its fur, striped like that of a tiger. "Wow! It must be the mommy or the daddy!" And it didn't seem too amused as it was pawing the ground with its paws. Clearly about to do... something?

"Do you think we can ride it, Kit?" Kat asked delightedly.

"Yes, they’ll definitely be fine… I think!" Kit nodded, saying it entirely to reassure Kat. She, of course, did not care at all. Maybe… maybe if they were real animals, but certainly not for virtual ones! All 1s and 0s, fundamentally… if very realistic ones (and zeroes).

Not late after had Kit let go of Kat, however, had a menacing sound growled out from the brushes, the deep, guttural tones clearly signaling this one was anything but cute and small as these three were.

A giant behemoth, glaring down at them as invaders and attackers. Kit raised her hammer once again, pulling back menacingly. She’d smack this filthy thing thing to the moon!

And then Kat spoke, and Kit felt a deep guilt rip through her soul. Kat was standing there, eagerly awaiting to be mauled for her innocent love of animals, and expecting her precious twin to be right beside her! How dare Kit betray that precious trust that’d been placed on her! To abandon their twinship so hastily like that, and for what!? A little self-preservation!? Despicable!

Lowering the hammer, Kit despawned it and took her place by Kat’s side, staring down death itself. "D-d-d-definitely K-Kat~!" Never had a smile looked more fake.

The behemoth charged up some more as Kat herself got ready. "I think it's a little bit feisty, so prepare yourself!" She assured Kit. "Together, I am sure we can succeed!" Giving her a nod, Kat crouched down slightly as...

OINK OINK!!!!!

The Dogpig charged forward. "NOW!" Kat called out, jumping graciously up in the air... landing on the back of the pig. "E...eeeehhhhh???" Not having expected to do so well, Kat was actually surprised that the pig nearly shook her off again. "Aaaahhh!" Though Kat desperately clung onto it for a moment as it went wild. "Ssshhh, shhh... everything will be fine.... You're a good... pig...doooohhooogggaaaahhh! Kit, come on!" She called out to Kit, in the same moment the pig also turned to the white-haired twin. Realizing that the Magia on its back wouldn't do it any harm.

OINK!

It would charge once more.....

There were moments where the realism of the game was sincerely appreciated. This was not one of them. That pigthingy was going to hurt, she just knew it!

And yet, Kit stood there dumbfounded as Kat flipped up onto its back like a ninja acrobat... person, and proceeded to cuddle it from above! Who the heck WAS she in the real world, a lion tamer!?

Gulping, Kit stood there, staring up at the giant beast and imagining the same motions in her head. Grip the side, hoist up, flip herself over, and land by Kat. Easy, right? Surely.

Kit ran up, grabbed the pigdog by the side, and felt her entire body tense up from the fear of touching an ANIMAL! She felt herself began to slip, and in her panic, turned up her magnetism, hoping she might be pulled up to the back with Kat.

Kit was violently pushed back and slammed into the ground, the pigdog ceasing on the opportunity to stomp on her arm with a disturbing CLANK.

"Owwwch...!!" she moaned in pain, scrambling away.

"You can do it, Kit! I believe in you!"
Kat called out to Kit as she got ready. "Urm, we can do it, yes!" She corrected herself. Yet, as the Pigthingy charged again and gave @Kit a good enough smacking that even the magnetism did not help, it was clear that Kit wouldn't tame the beast so quickly.

Oh, the sacrifices I do...

Closing her eyes for a moment, Kat fell down from the monster. Flop. Like a sack of potatoes that was simply dropped to the ground to the ground. "Eh...?" Though clearly not thinking her plan through, the adorable dog-shaped pig started to press down on Kat. "OOOOUUUCCCCHHHH!!!!!!" Why did it hurt so much?! Kat thought as she cried out in pain. The monster gnawing on her arm and legs to send sparks flying and metal crunching.

"Be a good... mom, and don't kill me, please!?" Then again, it was just a game, so eh. But the pain felt very real.

"D-Don't worry, Kit! You can do it!" She yelled under painful groans.

Kit had been all on-board with riding the thing together. Well, maybe not entirely, be she’d begrudgingly assented to it. In front of her now stood an easy opportunity to make that a reality, but at what cost? A cost she wasn’t willing to pay, that’s what!

"Kat!!" Kit cried out as the foul beast performed Kit’s one and final…

Unforgiveable Sin

"Get off my sister, you overgrown piece of bacon!!"

Rushing forward, Kit summoned her hammer, and delivered a solid thwack to the beast’s side, standing over Kat with a menacing aura. Having taken quite some time to read the rules, she’d come to learn pretty well how these masteries worked, so she’d take this opportunity to test one of the new skills she’d learned…

"Crush Aura Suppression!"

Hammer out, a golden light emanated from her, to her hammer, to the pigpie. Suddenly, the air around it grew oppressive and fought against its ability to continue, much less focus on Kat.

The monster growled in annoyance as Kit's hammer hit its side. "SQUEEEAAAKK!" Crashing against a tree or two like a ping-pong ball as the baby pigpies rushed to their hurt mommy. Quite sad, indeed.

"Urgh..." Kat slowly got up again as part of her torso and arm were exposing some of the wiring and ancient technology behind it. Just a flesh wound. For a Magia, anyway. As Kit then activated her Aura, the mommy pig felt intimidated enough to promptly flee together with her babies.

"Awwhh...." Kat seemed a bit sad about their sudden departure, but, ultimately- "Awwwh, thank you Kit!" Gave her sister a big hug. "Animals sometimes tend to play a bit too wild, right, Kit?" Before letting go of the unicorn-cake-themed Twin and taking a step back. Instead, looking at her wound. "We have to get that patched up before continuing on though! Maybe we find some cute animals that aren't protecting their children!" Did Kat mean animals without kids so they'd be less aggressive... OR kids without parents so they could just yoink them?

Both sounded equally scary.

"Uwah!" Kit shrieked swinging her hammer briefly as she was embraced, before realizing it was just her sister. "O-oh… Of course, Kat!" she nodded. It was what any good twin would do, certainly. She’d bash just about anything’s brains out to protect Kat! Or just because she felt like whacking an annoying animal… but still, this was a great moment of twin protection! A real milestone, for sure.

"K-Kat, I…!" hate animals. Just say it, Kit! You can‘t keep going on pretending like this forever! It’ll tear you apart!

But wouldn’t saying such a thing tear the two of them apart!? Better just Kit than their twinship, no? "I… definitely think we need to get you healed right away! Or maybe repaired? How does that work; I’m not sure…" Well, it wasn’t a lie. Kat was leaking some sort of black fluid from that gap that probably should remain inside. "You can’t die alone like that!"

Kat looked down at herself. Her torso was partially torn and her lower arm seemed slightly misaligned with the upper part. "Ah... we have this Magitek... stuff, right, Kit?" She gave Kit a nod. "I'd really like to see more of this zoo so..." With these words, Kat took out a smaller hammer, screwdriver, and welding iron from her inventory.

Did she always have them? Or did they collect them together? Or was there something Kit didn't know!? That was for her twin sister to decide! Without missing a beat, Kat went to work. Hammering on her elbow until it was back in place. "Urgh..." Before using the screwdriver to take off part from a tree's rind... wasn't this a nature reserve? Eh.

"Can you hold this for me, Kit?" She asked Kit, pressing the tree bark towards her dear sister, pointing at the gashing leaking wound of her own Magitek torso. "Press it on here, nee-nee!" Before using the tools to make herself a Makeshift tree... protection! At least nothing seemed to leak anymore.

How did all of this work? One had to wonder. Clearly, it was magic. And science. Magitek! Though, more importantly, Kat seemed to have done all this with a certainty that one had to question if she wasn't a pro gamer (or crafter?) after all.

"Uhm.... right... Kat," Kit answered without the least amount of assurance she possibly could, to the point it almost sounded like a question. Naturally, the two had acquired their tools together, like any good twins would. Even so, there was something disturbing about whacking and screwing her twin sister's arm like it was a toy mouse.

"O-okay...!" she nodded, dutifully pushing the bark to her sister's exposed arm. Would this qualify as a splint? Pretty weird one, and likely diseased with nature germs. At least magia couldn't get sick though... probably.

"I didn't know you knew how to fix things like this..." Kit mentioned, though there was a hint of lamentation in her voice. A skill Kat had that Kit didn't!? Clearly, she needed to learn it!, or the two of them would never achieve their perfect twinship! "Also, doesn't this hurt...?" It certainly looked painful, anyway. They were basically performing surgery!

"I'm fiinnneee.... we'll be finnnee... ouch." Of course, it hurt. Too much, in fact, as Kat was still unaware of having switched her pain settings from limited to limitless. Though it was ultimately a small sacrifice if it meant they could experience more of this petting zoo together!

Though it was then that Kat realized what she had done. "...!" She stared with ever so slight panic at Kit. Knowing how to fix things like these...? No, she couldn't!... She wouldn't. Kat was supposed to be a wallflower. "Eeehhh, just beginners luck. Kit! Yes... ehehehe...." Yup. Nothing to see here. "I totally don't know my way around a workshop and have zero clue how to even put a table together! Much less how to repair and change out a broken heat sensor from an oven. That's like, the basics! And I do not know those." Kat shook her head as she mentioned those specific details. "Why would you think otherwise!?"

Quick! She had to change the topic.

"Kit, do you have a favorite animal!?" Before realizing the sin she had just done. "I-I mean, Kit, what is our favourite animal!?" Yes.

Kit stared into Kat’s eyes, lids half closed as she kept digging her herself deeper and deeper. Ovens had hear sensors? How would she know that? Kit wasn’t buyin’ it!

"Mhm…" Kit raised an eyebrow, crossing her arms as Kat insisted she was clueless. "I…" she began to shake, clenching her jaw, shutting her eyes, and releasing an irritated humming noise that grew and grew until…

"…I don’t like animals at all, Kat!" Kit burst out, shaking her head furiously. "They’re creepy, and dirty, and they hurt people… like you!" Collapsing to her knees, Kit buried her head in her hands and shivering. "I’m sorry, Kat! I’m sorry we can’t be perfect twins! I’m sorry I failed you… sorry… sorry, I’m so sorry…"

Kit finally broke down and began sobbing there on the ground. Her magia eyes weren’t producing tears, but from the look of her, she certainly would be if possible.
