Background
Alan Mercer was a pretty typical student, perhaps spending a little too much time playing games after school when he should have been studying, but he did well in school so his parents never gave him much flak for it. However, in middle school, he had use of his legs taken from him in a bus accident on his way home from school the last day before summer break. When he didn't return to school the following semester most assumed he'd died, but in reality he'd lost himself in his hobbies, almost entirely.
He spent much of his time in MMO games, perhaps replacing the adventures he wasn't able to have in reality anymore with those in the games. However, many of them struggled to hold his attention. When he was 16, however, he'd seen some stuff online about a new Virtual Reality MMO that was bypassing government restrictions, and delivering a totally real and immersive experience. He became rather obsessed with it. He'd not found a way to download the game to try for himself, but he saw stories of people who had, and regardless of if they had positive or negative experiences with it, he grew more and more excited.
However, access was restricted, and he didn't really have a way to go about playing it without someone randomly gifting him with a copy of the client. He searched tirelessly for years, looking for any lead to find a way to play, but perhaps he was looking in the wrong places, because he always came up empty handed.
Spirits were high, although many failed attempts and dead end leads were wearing his patience thin. He began to think of the game as a myth, or maybe some ARG a bunch of people were feeding into. The idea of actually connecting to Terrasphere became more of a joke than a goal. Maybe it was that change that aligned the stars so perfectly for him to finally have a copy of the files land on his computer.
He'd made a forum post online, mocking the idea that such a game existed, commending the community of people holding up the charade for so long. He was sure that whoever was behind it all must feel pretty proud of themselves, after all there were even government warnings not to download the game. A few days after the post, Alan checked his email and he had something strange, a notification for a Draft he didn't remember writing up.
The subject line was a bit eerily just a question mark, and there was no body, simply an attachment for a launcher. He looked puzzled for a moment, thinking whether or not this was an elaborate prank. He clicked the file, had a few prompts about the files being missing and having to download them from their servers. A few clicks later, and it was downloading. The only question was, was it real? Did he dare get his hopes up again, only for them to be dashed?
Needless to say, he was too curious to leave it alone. He braced himself for disappointment, but he got himself set up to play.
